Grand Jury no bills judge in domestic abuse case Carlos R. Cortez, Judge of the 44th State Civil District Court in Dallas County, Texas, was vindicated on a false accusation made by his exgirlfriend on December 28, 2013, after he was no billed February 20, 2014 by a Dallas County Grand Jury.

Judge Cortez maintained his innocence since his arrest.

After the news was announced, Judge Cortez said, “I am thankful that in this instance, justice was served, however, I am aware of others in our community who have been falsely accused who have spent decades in prison for crimes that they did not commit. It is unfortunate that my political opponent in my up-coming Democratic primary election has used something so horrific in an attempt to have Democrats vote for her. It is shocking that someone running for a judicial bench would be telling

Democrats to vote based on what they read on the internet. A good judge applies the law to the facts of the case and does not judge someone based on a Google search, as my opponent has directed Democrats in Dallas County to do. My opponent, Bonnie Goldstein, owes my fellow Democrats in Dallas County an apology.”

Judge Cortez was represented in this case by Dallas defense attorneys Kevin M. Brooks and Peter A. Schulte. After the grand jury’s decision, Mr. Brooks said, “The grand jury made the proper decision in this case. This case is a perfect example of how someone can not only be falsely accused but also falsely charged with a crime based on a false allegation.”

Mr. Schulte, Judge Cortez’s other attorney, said “I hope moving forward that the Dallas Police Department will review their procedures in investigating claims of domestic violence instead of rushing to arrest. We believe that if the responding officers had conducted a simple investigation that night, he would not have been arrested based on the available evidence.”

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. ~Albert Einstein Over my career, I have written time and time again about the importance of voting.

I have quoted soldiers who fought battles to gain the right to vote and I have tried using the words and experiences of others to try to inspire, encourage, and yes, sometimes embarrass readers into voting.

I’ve told the story of Miss Jane Pittman, played by actress Cicely Tyson in the movie, “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.” I tried to recreate the excitement felt by the people who voted for the first time in the “new” South Africa and I even talked about the men and women who stood up and spoke out for the right to vote; as well as those who died because of their efforts.

I’ve written about the poll taxes and the lynchings, along with the degradation and humiliation felt by those men and women as their children watched them being denied their rights.

My pieces ran the gamut from women suffrage leaders to Tupac Shakur, who stressed the power of the vote and encouraged young voters to become involved.

At one point, over the years, I even suggested feeding people at the polls. Along with one vote/one person, we would have one meal. Having family reunions or concerts -- some gimmick to get people to get up off their butts and doing the right thing.

Now, while some may say that some elections have proven otherwise, we still have to believe that if there is one place where everyone is equal, it has to be at the ballot box.

Every time I write about the importance of voting, I say that it will be my last column -- that at some point I need to move on.

I had a talk with the Rev. Joseph Lowery, a giant in the movement who continues to be a voice for the voiceless and for all things righteous. We discussed voter turnouts in recent years and he too was frustrated.

But he said we have to keep on, because the cause is right.

So, I guess in a way some might say that according to what the Nobel Prize Winner Albert Einstein surmised, I must be certifiably insane, because I am going to try again!

Looking at the races in Dallas County, you can’t help but notice a shift.

In the Democratic Party, you see more Black faces. That’s a change.

Now there will be those who say the party is at a critical juncture and the “party” needs to circle the wagons to ensure victory in the general election in November. Others say the party has been limping along for decades and after receiving a boon in the last eight years, it needs to be shaken up.

I see the need to have a party that is unified and that doesn’t destroy one another in the primary, using up all resources leaving the victor with little to fight with in the general election. That’s a very valid point and strategy.

But, I also advocate for accountability and just like there are some challengers who might not be ready, you had better believe there are some incumbents who are not deserving of another term.

Clearly there is some work to do and too bad the discussions about what to do with the party were not held years ago, in preparation for a time like this.

Now the primary election date of March 4 is around the corner. Early voting began on February 18 and will continue through February 28.

And the Republican Party needs an overhauling as well.

It appears that insanity is the way of the world!

One of the most significant communities that has come to America over the years is the Asian-American community, specifically the ChineseAmerican community that has brought highly trained men and women, and rich cultural traditions that contribute immensely to the United States.

People of Chinese ancestry were the first Asian immigrants to arrive in Texas.

I heard someone say recently that mistakes are the price you pay for wisdom. Stated another way, wisdom is the result of the lessons learned from the mistakes we make every day. It kind of gives new meaning to that knowledge is power thing. I mean the ultimate power has to be that you know that you know and in order to know anything, life has

railroad system, working on a line that extended from Houston to Dallas. In the beginning, like most immigrant groups, they faced discrimination and hostility, but their strength of character and their collective tenacity allowed them to overcome unfair prejudices that existed in some quarters of the American environment.

Soldiers of Chinese ancestry fought valiantly during World War II, and during the Korean conflict, protecting American Democracy even while their communities faced racial hostiles from some sectors of the American public.

The Chinese community in North Texas, particularly the Taiwanese community, is economically vibrant, and its members make exceptional contributions to our community in education, health care, business, law and philanthropy.

Most recently I was honored to be a guest at a function hosted by the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce. The Chinese New year was celebrated, this being the “year of the Horse.” I was one of the recipients of the “global vision” award presented by the Chamber. They recognized me because

of my work in the areas of international business, culture, art, economics and transportation in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

During my early years as a state elected official, I felt an affinity towards the Asian community that continues to this very day. At my suggestion, a group of Asian business owners, lead by the late business and civic leader, Robert Hsueh, started an Asian business chamber to represent the interests of Asian-Americans, many of whom lived in the district that I represented. Some of the organizers of that first group were Taiwanese-Americans.

In Congress, I have been an active member of the Congressional Asian Pacific-American Caucus that I organized soon after reaching Washington. The organization is principally concerned with issues that impact the lives of Americans of Asian and Pacific Island origin.

In Dallas, as in other communities where large numbers of TaiwaneseAmericans are found, the concept of family is revered. Families often come together to celebrate their oneness and their vitality. That is simply one of the

The question rolling around in my head, then, is what kind of power does one get from their knowledge of God? I mean isn’t knowing God the absolute pinnacle of human understanding?

Now, we’ve agreed that knowledge is power. Remember knowledge usually comes with a price.

Anyone want to share with the class the pain and anguish of repeated mistakes, false optimism, idol worship, addictions, or maybe just outright don’t give a damn about this religion stuff?

Does anyone want to proclaim how the knowledge of God has made these once seemingly insurmountable obstacles but mere memories of past lives? Take it from one who knows, that’s power!

Now stay with me for one more moment. Let’s look at our shortcomings through the lens of wisdom.

Mistake after mistake just may have been a part of the course you were required to take so you might gain the wisdom necessary for you to allow God to mold you into a vessel where He can reside, or should I say where the Holy Spirit can reside?

It is my limited understanding that when pottery is put in a kiln, the temperature gets pretty hot.

But this process must be adhered to if you expect a resilient beautiful piece of pottery, lest I say art. I don’t know about you but this is a heat I have felt. If you let me I’ll testify about it at the drop of a hat.

From Rodney King to Jordan Davis...when will Black People learn?

From Rodney King, to Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and now Jordan Davis, Black communities have responded with hope while waiting for justice, only to be surprised again and again when justice did not come. The cycle never seems to change. At some point, it becomes important to examine why.

Unfortunately in my lifetime I have yet to see evidence of any fundamental change regarding the treacherous wrath of White control and racism within institutional, criminal justice, academic, media or other central contexts. In my worldview, disproportionately compromising, incarcerating or killing innocent, unarmed Black people is an American pastime that has never dissipated. The recent, cold-blooded murders of young Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, and the slap on the hand

given to their murderers, is simply more media profiled versions of this American past-time.

Most incidences do not make the national stage however. George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn, among other killers of unarmed Black people, symbolically represent a legacy of White power protection based, deadly preemptive strikes on young Black people, especially males.

Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, among other innocent Black people murdered over centuries, symbolically represent the consequences of a perceived threat to White power, racismbased control and Jordan Davis entitlement-thinking.

Any hopeful investment or belief that any of this will just change is dangerous and debilitating to actual change. Four hundred years plus of Black enslavement, dehumanization and cruelty - by Whites with delusions-ofsuperiority - still creates a dangerous dynamic and energy between Black and White people. people is defensively feared among Whites but the litany of examples - like Trayvon and Jordan - will not stop until Black people gain the capacity to actively fight for, value, respect and protect the lives of Black people.

For real defense, Black people must begin to value, nurture, prepare, independently build with, invest in and affirm other Black people.

And, THIS is the biggest challenge Black people have.

This particular challenge is even bigger than direct racism.

Centuries of yet healed scar tissue and trauma, fueled by racism and instigated Black on Black violence has to be intentionally understood, contextualized and effectively addressed. Little sustainable or reliable Black progress can occur until this is done. Black people must stop believing that race-irrelevant equity and equality has occurred based on symbolic representation (i.e. the

election of a Black president) or because they acquired a decent salary or a nice home.

Black people must actively recognize appeasements that guide them toward premature states of relief, surrender and material satisfaction.

These often successfully divert Black acknowledgment of the risk and still raging problems and casualties resulting from institutionalized White supremacy.

Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, among thousands, were and are vulnerable because their people are prematurely complacent, hopeful and distracted.

Real change only comes for people under attack when conditions change, or when they stop thinking and acting in ways conducive to being attacked. The murder of innocent Black people (including by other Black people) will not change until we change.

Unwarranted elements of surprise and surrender will keep innocent Black people at risk.

HALL: Who He Lookin’At? Is Malcolm X looking for you? Is ElHajj Malik El-Shabazz looking for his enemies, or is he waiting on his friends?

The beauty of this black-and-white photograph is that there is nothing vapid or conclusive about it.

There are several theories and conjectures as to where the picture actually came from, but no one knows.

A recent article that appeared on “The Grio” website says as much.

“But what of the iconic photo itself?

When did it creep into our consciousness? Where did it come from?

Most point to articles in Life and Ebony magazines.

Life’s March 20, 1964 article “The Ominous Malcolm X Exits from the Muslims” does not include that particular image.

In the September 1964 issue of Ebony, a similar photo accompanies Hans J. Massaquoi’s “Mystery of Malcolm X: Fired Black Muslim denounces cult, vows to take part in rights revolution” story but this is not the photo.

“It was the hardest photo to track down in any official capacity,” says Professor Zaheer Ali, who served as project manager of The Malcolm X Project at Columbia University. More than likely, Ali concludes, the photo comes from the Ebony shoot.”

Is Malcolm looking at the United States Congress, who passed an almost trillion dollar Farm Bill that took billions from those who need food stamps?

It may not seem like much, but an average loss of $68 per month whether you live in the projects, the barrios or in a dilapidated trailer park, is an onerous cut.

Malcolm could be looking at the 1% of the wealthiest of Americans who are comfortable saying that their poor and middle class subjects should quit whining about income inequality.

They agree with billionaire Tom Perkins’ assertion that every dollar you have should equate to one vote.

Is he looking at the Walton or Koch families?

Justice for Jordan: What the Dunn Verdict Says About Our Culture – and the Value that We Place on Young Black Males in America To Be Equal Marc H. Morial President and CEO National Urban League Another mother’s anguish.

Another unarmed Black teenager in Florida shot dead for no good reason. Another indefensible instance of Stand Your Ground rearing its ugly head. Eight months after the stunning acquittal of George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, justice again has been compromised in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Jordan Davis.

On November 23, 2012, Michael Dunn, a 47-year-old white man, fired ten rounds into a parked SUV after arguing over loud rap music coming from the vehicle with Jordan and three other unarmed African American teenagers inside.

Jordan Davis was killed at the scene. Like George Zimmerman, Michael Dunn claimed self-defense and used Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law to bolster his justification of the killing, as his lawyer stated in his closing argument, “His honor will further tell you that if Michael Dunn was in a public place where he had a legal right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force.”

Dunn claims Jordan Davis brandished a gun so Dunn shot first. But there is one big problem with his story. Jordan Davis had no gun and neither did anyone else in the SUV. On Saturday night, a jury found Dunn guilty of four counts, including three for the attempted murders of Jordan’s three friends.

But they deadlocked on the fifth count – first-degree murder in the killing of Jordan. Dunn may spend the rest of his life in prison for the four lesser counts. But the failure to convict him of murdering Jordan Davis raises critical questions about the devaluing of the lives of young Black males in America and confirms the need for a repeal of Florida’s repugnant Stand Your PAGE 9

Ground law which sanctions the use of deadly force by anyone who merely thinks – or claims – they are in danger from a perceived assailant.

Regardless of whether Dunn or Zimmerman chose to fully exercise Stand Your Ground provisions in their defense, this law was very clearly at the center of both cases. It is even clearer that the “shoot first” laws across the country are contributing to needless bloodshed and are ripe for unequal application based on race.

A recent Urban Institute analysis found that in Stand Your Ground states, “When the shooter is white and the victim is black, the justifiable homicide rate is 34 percent. When the situation is reversed and the shooter is black and the victim is white, shootings are ruled to be justifiable in only slightly more than 3 percent of cases.” Last September, the National Urban League, in collaboration with the bipartisan Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition and VoteVets, issued a report showing that in the 22 states with “Stand Your Ground” laws, the justifiable homicide rate has risen by an average of 53 percent in the five years following their passage.

In Florida, justifiable homicides have increased by 200 percent since the law took effect in 2005.

This view and those like it are why we must commit today to action against the devaluing of our young Black lives.

Even as the Michael Dunn trial was getting underway, we learned that Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, had planned to capitalize on the death of a young Black male by participating in a “celebrity” boxing match – when his only claim to fame is killing an

unarmed Black teenager – and getting off. Such a blatant disregard for the value of a Black male’s life should be a wake-up call to all Americans.

We must intensify our fight against Stand Your Ground laws – and the underlying mentality – that justify the killing of young Black men whose only “offense” is being Black.

These statistics and their underlying racial disparities, tell us that expansive self-defense laws such as Stand Your Ground are doing more harm than good, and when coupled with implicit racial bias and unfounded preconceptions, young Black males are especially at risk. Dunn’s own bigoted words in letters from jail clearly show his disregard for their lives, as he wrote: “The jail is full of blacks and they all act like thugs.

This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these (expletive) idiots when they’re threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior.” and “The fear is that we may get a predominantly black jury and therefore, unlikely to get a favorable verdict. NAACP Statement on the Michael Dunn Verdict: There Are No Winners in this Case

Jordan Davis Adora Obi Nweze, President of the Florida State NAACP: “The State of Florida has spoken and 47-year old Michael Dunn will have to answer for some of his crimes relating to having opened fire on an SUV filled with unarmed black teenagers.

Today a jury convicted Dunn on four counts for the attempted murder of Tevin Thompson, Leland Brunson, and Tommy Storns, the three teens in the car with Jordan.

The judge declared mistrial on the count of first-degree murder that applied to the death of Jordan Davis.

While prosecutors have stated they will retry Michael Dunn for the murder of Jordan Davis, there are no winners in this case.

Two parents will forever remain without their only son; three other young men had their lives changed forever and the State of Florida PAGE 11

and the country as a whole is left to deal with yet another senseless murder of an innocent young man whose life was cut short for no other reason than the color of his skin.

Young, black men are not thugs or suspicious by definition; and this important verdict reconfirms that those who commit crimes based on those misplaced preconceptions will not go unpunished.

The NAACP will continue to push for a change in the laws that make these types of crimes more prevalent and the punishment for their commission, less likely.

Stand Your Ground laws create an environment that places far too many people, especially young African-American men, at risk of losing their lives as a result of nothing more than the perception that someone "feels" threatened.

Keep my Nephew Away from my House Dear Alma, I know this may sound mean, but I can’t stand my sister’s son. He’s three years old and he talks back and never listens to what I tell him to do. Also suggest that she goes online and check out some new mom blogs. Maybe she’s overwhelmed and unsure where to start. Don’t give up on him from the start. Give him a roadmap to becoming the best that he can be. He’ll strive to make you proud.

LBJ Presidential Library to host Civil Rights Summit to mark 50th Anniversary of Civil Rights Act of 1964 Former Presidents Carter and Clinton to Deliver Keynote Addresses AUSTIN, Texas -- The LBJ Presidential Library will host a Civil Rights Summit April 8-10, 2014, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

President Lyndon Baines Johnson drove passage of the legislation and signed it into law.

The Summit will be both a look back at the civil rights movement of the 1960s and a look forward at the civil rights issues still facing America and the world.

The Summit will feature keynote addresses from former President Jimmy Carter on April 8 and former President Bill Clinton on April 9.

An invitation has been extended to President George W. Bush to deliver a keynote address on April 10, and the Library is working with his office to finalize details.

"Fifty years ago, President Johnson's vision for a more just and honorable America contributed to the passing of the Civil Rights Act, the most transformational civil rights legislation since Reconstruction and a crucial step in the realization of America's promise," said Mark K. Updegrove, director of the LBJ Presidential Library. "But his vision went far beyond ending racial discrimination. He believed that education, economic opportunity, health care, clean air and water, and access to the arts and humanities, among other things,

were inherent civil rights for all Americans—and it's reflected in his legislative legacy."

The Civil Rights Summit is this year's cornerstone event of a multi-year anniversary celebration of President Johnson's prodigious legislative legacy. Throughout the course of the next several years, the LBJ Presidential Library, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, and the LBJ Foundation will partner to commemorate the anniversaries of seminal laws signed by President Johnson that continue to resonate today.

"President Johnson's legislative achievements underscore for our students how society can be transformed by the efforts of those committed to a life of leadership in public service," said Robert Hutchings, dean of the LBJ School of Public Affairs. "Now, with the Civil Rights Summit, we will have an opportunity to hear from some of today's most prominent and distinguished leaders as our students prepare themselves to be the next 'get it done' generation."

Three Ways to Stop Your Job from Ruining Your Life Dr. Tasha Eurich

He can’t be serious, Jim thought. Jim been recruited away from a Fortune 500 firm by a fast-growing start-up, and it was his first day. The president of the company had just handed him a BlackBerry and said, “Keep this with you at all times.” Really?, Jim thought.

That Saturday morning, one of the founders sent an e-mail to the senior leadership team. By 5:00 p.m., there were more than thirty replies. Jim soon learned that at this company, there was no concept of detachment from work.

He grieved the loss bitterly, and his friends would mock him for stepping out of the bar to check e-mail at10:00 p.m. while they were out for a few pints of beer. In a matter of months, Jim’s job began to seriously interfere with his relationship with his wife.

One study found that half of employees believe their current workload is unsustainable. As a result, 33 percent of people start thinking about work the moment they wake up and 75 percent think about it until they go to sleep at night.

Luckily, Jim’s story has a happy ending.

Less than a year after being handed that BlackBerry, he left the company for a job that allowed him to have a life. But for many, especially in the cold, dark days of February, the concept of a real

life outside of work is like a unicorn—it might exist, but you haven’t seen it.

So whether you’re spending too much time at the office or taking your stress out on your family, allowing your job take over your life is a slippery slope of misery. More scientifically, research shows that workers who experience such conflict are less healthy, less happy, and more likely to engage in passive coping behaviors like overeating, drinking, or drugs.

Want your job to stop ruining your life?

Here are three tips to end the madness: Stop Wasting Time at Work More hours at work don’t always make us more productive. Think about a typical day in the office. You arrive, fire up your computer, and answer e-mail.

Then maybe you wander down the hall to the coffee machine and leisurely pour a cup of coffee. You run into your friends and discuss last night’s football game. You wander back to your office, start a task, and get interrupted by a member of your team. And on it goes.

By the time you leave at 7:00 p.m., you might have had only five to six productive hours. Do you ever wonder if there’s a better way?

We live in a society where the number of hours we spend at work can be a barometer for our self-worth. Because I spend twelve hours per day at work, we think, I must be important and valuable.

This reasoning is dangerous and illogical. It is not a crime to do things efficiently; if you can get the same result in eight hours versus ten and spend two more hours with your family, do it!

To get more done in less time, use the One Less Thing Principle. For every work activity, ask yourself:

Can this activity be focused so less time is spent completing it?

Can this activity be delegated to another person or group?

Can this activity be stopped?

Harness the Power of Power Breaks Just like Jim discovered, being tethered to your e-mail 24/7 isn’t a good idea. One study examined the effect of uninterrupted work on our ability to focus. The researchers asked two groups of students to complete a forty-minute task that required concentration. One group simply completed the task. The other group was asked to stop the task and memorize a set of numbers at three points wile they completed it.

The results were striking. Even though the second group spent less time on the task, they performed better. Viewing the numbers served as a “power break”: something that let them briefly turn their attention from the task to something else.

Similarly, power breaks from work help us perform better. Certainty, it’s not easy to take a three-week vacation and lock your phone in the hotel safe. But at a minimum, carve out evenings and weekends to escape your “technology tether.” Perhaps you can’t unplug every evening—then aim for three evenings per week. If you have to work on a Saturday, don’t work on Sunday. Find what works for you.

Get Moving There’s a great deal of evidence that exercise reduces stress—in particular, high-intensity workouts have proven effective in reducing anxiety. And recent research suggests that exercise actually decreases work-family conflict. In a study of 476 workers, Russell Clayton

and his colleagues found that people who exercised regularly had less conflict between work and home. Why? They argue that exercise can be a powerful way to “psychologically detach from work.”

So, it will pay off to keep your New Year’s resolution to exercise more—not only will you look better in your jeans, you’ll have a more balanced life!

T-Shirt Fundraiser for Fashion Stylist Car Accident Victim Houston, TX – On December 23, 2013, Tiany Adams, a Houston resident, was headed to Lu)in, Texas for the Christmas holidays when she lost control of her car and was seriously injured in a major car accident. She was cut from her vehicle using the Jaws of Life, and then transported via helicopter to the Houston Medical Center. She has undergone several surgeries, but has made a lot of progress. Tiany Adams has been released recently from the hospital, and now recovering.

Although, released the Ms. Adams has a long road to recovery. The 30-year old freelance fashion stylist is without medical insurance coverage, and in need of financial support.

Toronto-based marketing and public relations company Ford Publicity, is a former employer of

Ms. Adams, and decided to create a T-Shirt campaign to help with fundraising eorts.

Parkland receives 2013 Excellence in Community Service Award from Texas Hospital Association DALLAS – Parkland Health & Hospital System was named the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Community Service Award from Texas Hospital Association (THA) in recognition of the system’s outstanding accomplishments in providing healthcare services for the Dallas County Jail. “Parkland Health & Hospital System has created a center of excellence in the nation’s seventh-largest county jail and consistently delivers high quality physical and behavioral health care services to the population of inmates,” said Ted Shaw, THA president and chief executive officer. “The complexity of providing care in any environment is daunting, and the leadership and staff at Parkland deserve high praise for facing off with such a challenging endeavor.”

In its annual evaluation of Dallas County Jail services, the Department of Justice reported in September 2013, “There has been continued progress in the medical program. In all areas, improved quality and process selfmonitoring has characterized the program’s operational philosophy.”

Sharon Phillips, RN, Parkland’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer for population health, stated, “We are extremely honored by this award from THA. Our entire staff is committed to providing excellent health care to all patients and we believe caring for the jail population is a vital part of Parkland’s mission of service to the community. The strong relationship Parkland has formed with the Dallas County Sheriff ’s Department and the County Commissioners Court has been vital in our efforts to create the center of excellence. This is definitely a team effort.”

In 2006, the Dallas County Commissioners asked Parkland to step in and overhaul health care in the jail that includes both adult and juvenile correction facilities serving nearly 120,000 patients each year. The Dallas County Jail System was known to have serious lapses in its medical care of inmates and had received numerous citations from the U.S. Justice Department and Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

Parkland moved quickly to improve conditions, updating electronic information systems, revising medical delivery procedures and instituting more thorough health screening processes. Approximately half of the jail’s inmates are identified at admission with either a mental health or medical diagnosis, such as diabetes, HIV or hypertension. Many have not received adequate health care prior to incarceration. Twenty-six areas were retrofitted for medical care, allowing for an on-site pharmacy, staff training and conference areas. Staff was increased from 121 to 345. New programs were created to provide medical and psychiatric assessments, OB/GYN and dental services, infectious disease management and suicide prevention.

Since Parkland took over the Dallas County Jail health program, outcomes have improved for inmates, the mortality rate has declined 80 percent, and inpatient days have decreased 30 percent. Since 2010, the number of grievances has dropped 44 percent and today 98 percent of inmates are seen and 99 percent receive critical medications within 24 hours. A new three-level, 280-bed medical and mental health infirmary is scheduled to open in 2014. !

Words cannot begin to describe the feelings I have at this moment. As I reflect back over the last two months here, the only word I can use to sum up the experience is “awesome!”

What a wonderful time we have had in this anointed place.

Serving as Pastor here is truly a humbling calling that I do not take lightly or for granted. I speak truthfully from my heart when I say that I needed Mt. Moriah more that Mt. Moriah needed me. I thank God for this wonderful opportunity that He has bestowed upon me. Serving as Pastor here has helped me in my spiritual growth through the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. * We have been witnesses to the magnificent power of Jesus Christ throughout our lives. If there are any doubters, we should be able to testify that God is alive and still in the miracle working business. I am

thrilled that we completed our Daniel Fast and I see the fruit of that labor. I strive to deliver the Word of God in plain and simple terms where we all can get an understanding of what God is trying to tell us. My greatest desire as Pastor/ Preacher/ Teacher is to see lives transformed through the hearing and doing of the Word of God. The Lord has shown me that my labor is not in vain. * The divine prescription for the church is found in the Word of God. It is my prayer that we as a church family will continue to take, eat, and drink as prescribed by the Lord. It is also my prayer that we will abide in His Word and continue to bring forth fruit, more fruit, and much fruit.

Thank you Mt. Moriah for allowing me to pastor with joy. Let us always look to Jesus and live for His return: loving one another in brotherly love and serving Him in spirit and in truth.

Lancaster ISD presents “Who Do You Think You Are?” My History Bowl In an effort to build a community with a strong knowledge of culture, heritage and history, teams of Lancaster ISD students in grades 4-12 and community members will compete in the inaugural “Who Do you Think You Are?” My History Bowl Competition at the

“There are few things as powerful and important as a people steeped in its own history. Traditionally, schools teach a survey of all cultures and history and thus, do not have the time to explore indepth the contributions of any one culture,” Lancaster ISD Professional Development Director Connie Isabell said.

Isabell, who is spearheading this district event, said that aside from the rote remembrance of history facts, she hopes this competition will also accomplish two major objectives.

“First, we aim to deepen our student’s sense of self and racial pride. Secondly, to provide opportunities to enhance their life skills like research, team work, reasoning, communication and cooperation.”

The National Assessment of Educational Progress National Report Card released in 2011 found that Fiftyfive percent of high school seniors failed to meet even the “basic” level of history knowledge, meaning that they could not interpret a short text excerpted for multiple-choice questions. It further reported that overall, American schoolchildren were found less capable in U.S. history than in any other subject which was a reflection of the consistent decline of cultural life in the country over the last few decades.

Lancaster ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael D. McFarland said that one of the district’s emphasis will focus on preparing students to learn more about their history outside of the traditional Black History or Hispanic Heritage months.

“Our challenge is to engage in the difficult work of transforming our students’ self-concept,” he said. “We

must intentionally create opportunities to expose them to current and past models of success so that they can began to see themselves differently.”

According to Isabell, the goal of this initial competition is to increase the number of youth and adults exposed to the history, culture and contributions of African Americans. However, she confirmed that future events would acquaint students with other cultures and ethnic groups.

“We will be able to give recognition and celebrate the richness and complexities of various cultures throughout the year,” she said.

America ranks 13th in the world in the education of its population, according to Isabell and the typical community education to entertainment ratio is about 1 to 200. She believes that it is time to change.

In our library Champion for the Homeless, author and artist releases Children’s Book Houston— Community Advocate Noah Rattler , Author Nekisha Pickney and Illustrator Thaddeus Lavalais teamed up to create Noah’s Walk, an inspiring children’s book that tells the story of Rattler’s journey while walking 1,800 miles from Houston, TX, to Los Angeles, CA, to raise awareness for homelessness.

Noah’s Walk tells the story of real life heroism as a young man who makes a decision to impact the life of others.

million people experience homelessness in a given year. Noah believes his walk has had a positive impact in favor of the homeless population and by writing Noah’s Walk he and Nekisha are encouraging others to make a difference.

“Noah’s story is one of self-sacrifice.

He was not homeless, yet he identified a major problem in today’s society and did something to help. I’ve witnessed the fruit of the many seeds that Noah planted because of his journey. I’m sure that the Noah’s Walk children’s book will also touch the hearts of many,” Pickney said.

Noah Rattler hails from Houston, Texas, where he graduated from John E. Codwell Elementary. When he isn’t raising awareness for homelessness, Noah spends his time coming up with plans to save the

The book also serves as a fun learning tool that highlights vocabulary, geography, and cultural cognizance.

Noah’s Walk is set to release February 12th, in an effort to continue to raise awareness of homelessness in America and to encourage youth to become civically responsible.

“I, like many before me, am doing what I can to make the world a better place. Noah’s Walk is an attempt to ignite and nurture the same fire in the hearts of future generations,” Rattler said.
