Kirk says Home Rule can Students learn paths they can take to graduate “improve and modernize” Dallas ISD Former Mayor Ron Kirk recently endorsed the concept of Dallas ISD becoming a Home Rule district under the petition process launched by Support Our Public Schools. Mayor Kirk released the following statement: Education is the most critical issue defining our success as a city. I welcome this conversation about how we can improve and modernize Dallas ISD in an effort to better prepare our children for college and the workforce. Fears surrounding this movement are unfounded. Home Rule offers us several ways to make needed changes in our schools that will positively impact our kids and their ability to learn. Dallas has grown into an international city, and education is the new global currency. We owe it to our children, our families and our future to control our own destiny through education, and that means taking bigger, bolder steps like this toward improving our public schools. I would love for Dallas to be the pioneer in taking advantage of this important tool provided to us by the Legislature.

Dallas ISD eighth-grade students recently had the chance to peruse various booths set up by district high schools at the Exploring High School Fair for the new Pick Your Path graduation plan. The new plan will allow eighth-graders to choose an endorsement or area of study to focus on when they enter high school. The fair included high school booths, which allowed students to learn about the schools’ specific endorsement, academic clubs, special electives and more. As required by the State Legislature, Texas high school graduation plans will take on a new look starting with the 2014-2015 school year. Students will be able to select from five endorsements, which will allow them to personalize a plan to their interest. To learn more about the Pick Your Path graduation plan, visit http://www.dallasisd.org/graduationplan.

Message to the People... Is there ever a time when it is okay to hit a female?

Cheryl Smith

Twice I have watched a video on Facebook of a young lady (I use the word loosely because her behavior is anything but lady-like) standing over a male in class berating him and encouraging him to hit her. They are yelling and he tells her that he is not going to hit her as she continues to provoke him and they spew curse words at one another.

Dr. Haynes 6

There appears to be one “teacher” who gingerly tries to take hold of the female. At least two students are recording the event. Some appear to be studying while others are laughing and commenting. To say I am pissed is an understatement. The female walks away, finally, with a parting shot, calling the young man a “bitch.” He replies back with the same insult and next thing you know she has jumped on him, punching wildly. He gets her off of him as they tumble to the ground. He gets up and walks out of the classroom and she takes off after him. Now how many times has this young female-child witnessed behavior? Was it at home? And who stressed to this young man that under no circumstances should he raise his hand at a female? Here are a few elements of the video. You have the children who seemed to turn a deaf ear to what was going on, although it appeared to be a very loud, vulgar and disruptive scene.

DeMarcus Ware 12

The teacher/aide/monitor appeared to be clueless about what to do. The male student seemed unemotional in his responses while the female appeared more vested in the exchange. There were students clearly in violation of most school’s rules that prohibit use of cell phones in the classroom but never were the two admonished. The male student was at his desk, backed up against the wall and the female student stood over him, oftentimes leaning in as she emphasized her points. He continued to ask and tell her to get out of his face. Did she come at him like they were man to man, or female to female? Yes she did and evidently she thought one of two things -- she was badder than he or no matter what she did he wouldn’t hit her. Either way, her behavior was inappropriate and inexcusable! I had to share the video on my Facebook page, not to glorify the deviant behavior, but to use as a teachable moment. I also wanted to hear from folks about what they think should happen. Many agreed with me that any adult in the room should be fired. Some blamed “these children today” -- while others placed the blame on the adult influences and asked “how many times has she seen her momma act like that?”

On the lookout 20

Some are embarrassed or “saddened.” Others said security or someone should have been called. Interestingly there were many women who commented and said that the female student deserved to be hit once she became physical. Some praised the male student’s parents/adult influences because he exercised restraint, although quite a few said he was vulgar. I think those who taught him not to hit also said not to call females out of their names.

I MESSENGER

As I watched the video, I thought about the countless number of men who have been assaulted by one of the most dangerous weapons on earth -- a woman’s tongue.

Cheryl Smith, Publisher Established 2011

I also thought about the many men in the public eye who have had their names maligned. I thought of singer/actor Chris Brown who to this day I haven’t seen his arrest mugshot from his “beatdown” of Rihanna. Have you? What do you think it looks like?

I also thought about the countless women and children who have been on the receiving end of vicious beatings or murdered and I get really sad.

PAGE 4

!

Violence is not the answer. We have to teach our young girls to act a certain way and not to wait until their mouth has gotten them into trouble to play the “lady” card. Young boys must exercise restraint and learn to walk away! There are alternatives. We must teach effective communications skills that extend past your thumbs (for texting) and middle finger (for expressing displeasure). We must teach how to handle volatile situations without resorting to violence or retaliating.

JOHNSON: Don’t miss the healthcare deadline By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

The March 31st deadline to sign up for health care coverage under the historical Affordable Care Hon. Eddie Bernice Act is rapidly Johnson approaching. More than three million people have signed up for coverage since the enrollment period began in October of last year, according to officials from the Department of Health and Human Services. Now is the time to find those who have not signed up, and urge them to enroll. During the month of January, 300,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 34 selected healthcare plans. The total number in that age group that has selected health care plans since open enrollment began is 807,500, according to federal health officials. During that same period, 1.1 million Americans used the state and federal exchanges to sign up for health insurance. Total enrollment during the

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING

Pick your friends wisely! By James A. Washington

This past weekend I was supported by friends as I humbly spoke to the male members of a local church at a prayer breakfast and was reminded of how much I was impacted by Mark 2:5. The parable of the paralytic struck me in a way that has never left my consciousness. If you remember, Jesus gave us all a candid perspective on how we should select our friends. “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven.’” The operative words here are their faith. I don’t know why at this particular time all those sermons about choosing your friends wisely, became crystal clear.

first four months reached 3.3 million Americans. No doubt the number would be higher but for technical glitches with the federal exchange, which have been corrected. A recent poll by Gallup found that nearly 16 percent of all adults in the United States are without health insurance. The percentage has been steadily dropping since the heath care law was enacted. We must continue to work to see it go even lower. It appears that young people are not going to be deterred from participating in the program by vicious and patently false anti-health care advertising financed by ultra- conservative groups that oppose the legislation. The nation’s young are not as naïve as some think. Recently, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and I encouraged people to sign up for the coverage at a press conference held at Paul Quinn College. Rallies and events urging people to enroll have taken place throughout North Texas. The enrollment deadline of March of 31st is rapidly approaching. Even though officials in Texas refused to establish a state-run exchange, where uninsured people could purchase affordable healthcare coverage, more

than 200,000 Texans have enrolled. Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured citizens in the country. The Texas exchange is being run by the federal government. The refusal by Texas Governor Rick Perry to establish a state-run exchange, and accept Medicaid expansion is soon going to hit Texas taxpayers in our wallets. Secretary Sebelius said that it would cost Texas $18 million each day that it refused to accept Medicaid expansion. Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, which provides healthcare coverage for those who live under the poverty line and for the disabled, would be paid for entirely by the federal government for the first three years. Thereafter, the government will pay 90 percent of the costs, still a great deal for the states. It makes no sense for Texas officials to refuse the federal offer. While some Republicans argue that the Affordable Care Act is burdensome, I believe that the real reason that they continue to oppose this legislation is an acrimonious dislike for President Obama. And some of his detractors will do anything to see his presidency go down in history as a failure.

But people with sound judgment and those who support the Affordable Care Act will not allow President Obama’s opponents to be victorious. When the history of our country is written, the Affordable Care Act will be viewed as significant as Social Security and Medicare. So let’s continue to urge our friends, our neighbors, our church members and others to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. Its success is crucial to our collective well-being, and it is simply the right thing to do.

Can you imagine the strength and power behind individuals who believe in you so strongly, who love the Lord so much, that He heals you because of them? If there was ever a place in the bible that should make you realize that people who love God and you can make a difference in your life, this is it. For all you praying mothers out there, here’s proof that God through Christ is indeed listening. I know I don’t have to remind some of you about the grief we’ve put those who love us through. I won’t force any of you about the only course of action we left open for them. Putting us in the hands of the Lord (through prayer) was their only alternative because, as the old folks used to say, our heads were so hard that not only did we bruise ourselves, we also By made Marctheir Morial hearts bleed. I believe I’m here today because the Lord entertained theof pleas of Marc Morial is the CEO others on my behalf. I was too dumb, the National Urban League too young and too spiritually immature to do so for myself. Mark 2:5 lets us know that the people you associate with, the people you hang out with, the family you’re born into can save you from you, even if you don’t believe they can.

You see the friends of the paralytic might have given up on him, but they wouldn’t give up on God. These are the kind of folk you should want in your life. I know I want them in mine. I believe the message here is that while in the midst of your personal storms, you’re infinitely better off if you’ve got some of God’s storm troopers in your entourage. You need a few folk who will break down a few walls, tear up a roof or two and ignore a few rules in the name of God for you. These are the people who will tell you in a heartbeat what you already know. Don’t try to go it alone. You can start your journey by yourself but you will surely need God based help to finish it. The family of believers is just that, a family, your family. Take a look around in your own life and take inventory of your closest friends and relatives. Which ones, if any, would you want pleading your case before the Almighty? Who in your current collection of friends is willing and eager to make a personal appeal to God to save your butt from the insanity you’re currently in, are about to go through even if you don’t know better?

More importantly, what kind of friend are you? If your closest friends took the same inventory, how would you stack up? Are you likely to intercede with the Lord on their behalf? When I was younger, riding shotgun was a favored position. For example only, if you’ve got the right kind of friends, everybody knows the ultimate shotgun position is reserved for God. It has to be. At least one person in your group should be so connected to Him that He won’t forsake anybody. I guess I’m trying to point that the idea that the belief of others in the truth of the Lord is so powerful that you might be the beneficiary is mind boggling to me. I am so thankful that I know a few people, who I call friend who see this as the natural way of things. However big or small your circle of friends is, you might want to add or delete some based on their willingness to go to bat for you where your spiritual well being is concerned. After all, theirs just might be the only prayers that get through. God bless and keep you always.

Getting Covered Means I Get to Focus on What Matters: My Kids By Shellie Braggs

I work hard helping at-risk young adults in Dallas get the job training and life skills they need to make better lives for themselves and their families. I know how important that is because I’m a single mom trying to do the best by my children. My kids are great, and I want only the best for them. But one thing I wasn’t always able to do was provide health insurance for them. I don’t get insurance through my employer because I’m a contractor, and I couldn’t afford the $500 monthly premiums for my children and myself. Not having health insurance for the past seven years – my children were uninsured for about a year – has weighed heavily on my mind. I’ve had to make tough decisions. I managed to cobble together free or inexpensive health services through local clinics and my church, but it was never easy. I felt helpless being unable to provide something as basic as health care to my family. That’s why I was thrilled to find out that I could find affordable, quality health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. It was cheaper and easier than I had thought.

,

All I had to do was log onto HealthCare.gov and explore my options. I selected a Silver plan – in no more than 15 minutes! I qualified for reduced costs, so my premium is only $131 a month. And my children are covered by the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Having insurance that covers preventive services is going to help me stay healthy and catch potential problems early – a great peace of mind I’m grateful to have. I’ve had two repeat mammograms that I had to pay for out of pocket, and I need to monitor myself for possible growths. My new insurance covers mammograms at no additional cost. It’s a great relief. If you’re sick, you can’t take care of your kids. So I’m very excited to finally be covered. As a single mom, I have an obligation to take care of myself and my kids and now I can focus on that. My coverage went into effect on March 1. I urge all moms and dads to get the security that comes with a Health Insurance Marketplace plan. Get covered through the Marketplace at HealthCare.gov by March 31, the end of open enrollment for the current year. Don’t delay.

Pastor Freddy Haynes, the world should hear this brother! By Thomas Muhammad

Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford with Thomas Muhammad

Yes there have been plenty of national speakers for our cause throughout the years, from Malcolm X, Martin King Jr., Marcus Garvey, Kwame Toure and Jesse Jackson Sr., just to name a few. The importance of these speakers was that they could call attention to an issue or cause and receive the type of PAGE 6

respect needed to correct change in the attitude of the powers that be. No one can say with great certainty that we have someone on the scene that can do that today, can you? Yeah I see you nodding your head in the affirmative so it appears that you do feel me on this. Well, in my humble opinion I believe I have found that national person in Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Senior Pastor at Friendship West Baptist Church. This brother can throw down and I don’t mean read a speech or book to an audience. This brother can step up to any mic without a single sheet of paper and you just give him the subject and it’s off to the races! And he makes the issue clear with no ambiguity, period. I’ve had the pleasure of hosting him on numerous occasions as a speaker so I speak from pure experience. Most of you who know me also know that I’m never hardly impressed by speeches, cause after all anyone can talk. For me it’s the action, for what my daddy used to say “where the rubber meets the road!” A national voice is extremely important when you are addressing national causes. You mos def want the masses to move when the times warrant it.

!

Dr. Frederick D. and Mrs. Debra Peek Haynes

Freddy can move people. He’s a motivator his words go right to the point and he does it with a poetic justice kinda strike. As a student of our history he can link up cause after cause non-stop with linguistic skills you would see in a Malcolm or Martin. Of course I’m also a champion of my national Chairman, brother Kofi Taharka of the National Black United Front (NBUF) who also does an awesome job in speaking truth to power. !

Type to enter text

But we’re talking about influence with the masses right now so we need a solution to stop the hemorrhaging. Soon enough people will hear brother Kofi I have no doubt about that and I will be there willing to go the distance with him as well. Meantime we’ve got what I call him during introductions “the master, blaster, pastor from the wild wild west! Pastor Frederick Haynes!” Yo, you gotta hear this brother! Until then the Struggle Continues… !

HALL: The Minimum Rage Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Author and Columnist

“Let them eat cake is one of the most famous quotes in history. The year is roughly 1789, and the underclass has had enough of the rich. Upon being told that her French subjects had no bread, MarieAntoinette (bride of France’s King Louis XVI) is said to have become indignant. The Queen bellowed, “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”—“Let them eat cake.” It w a s t h a t c a l l o u s a n d insensitive remark that hoisted the queen as a hated symbol of the decadent monarchy and fueled the revolution that would cause her to (literally) lose her head several years later. That was the French Revolution, but where is the American rage. Who knows if it will take the guillotine in 2014, but something has to fall. The war in America is on for paychecks. Far too many of those who work every day, 40 hours per week and more are suffering. The POTUS, the Democratic Party and most progressives are waging war. Meanwhile the Republican Party has taken on the stance of Marie Antoinette; "Let them eat cake." This they bark while never considering the rising price of butter, eggs, flour, sugar... Most Americans will attest that there is no feeling like anticipating PAGE 7

a raise on your paycheck. Imagine your paltry sum increasing from $290 to $440 per week!

There is a small risk to small businesses, but the President will enact supports to counterbalance the affect. But for now, let’s look at it from the employee’s vantage point. The graph that appeared in the Washington Post says a lot, but just in case you can’t afford the high price of America’s colleges or a statistics class, here’s what it means. “That red line is corporate profits since 1970. The blue line is labor's share of income. As you can see, corporate profits are skyrocketing while labor's share of those profits is falling. This is a big part of the reason that median wages are stagnating even as the economy grows and the wealthy become ever more fabulously rich.” One single mother of three who

Speaking through the veil of anonymity, she began by saying that it would help her to buy food on her own. She shamefully receives food assistance, but only because the father of her children is locked up. She readily admitted to me that he p r o b a b l y w o u l d n’t p a y c h i l d support if he were on the street. She ticked off a litany of other things that would be different and none of them were the lavish creature comforts that most take for granted. middle child has eczema and she just wants to be able to buy dye free soaps and Eucerin or some other salve for his obvious outbreaks. Her story may not be the next low wager earner’s story, but it is compelling and shameful to some degree. Marie Antoinette may or may not have spewed the words; “Let them eat cake.” We can let the historians fight on that one. But America is slow boiling in a simmering rage about the minimum wage. Those who are up and in should be more sensitive to those who find themselves down and out.

Meanwhile the Republican Party has taken on the stance of Marie Antoinette; "Let them eat cake." This they bark while ne ver considering the rising price of butter, eggs, flour, sugar... !

Dallas artists collaborate with area residents to turn vacant space into theater and bring their neighborhood stories alive

Rep. Johnson honored by Conference of Minority Transportation Officials

Event: “Story Corners” Outdoor Storytelling Festival & Neighborhood Fish Fry. Event date: April 12, 2014 Location: Tenth Street Historical District (intersection S. Cliff & Eleventh Sts. at Betterton Cir), Dallas Background: Many inner city neighborhoods have street corners and vacant lots that serve as gathering places for socializing and storytelling. In some of those same neighborhoods that blight and neglect have turned such corners and lots into breeding grounds for criminal activity and abandoned spaces with no activity at all. In an effort to reinvigorate such spaces in Dallas, a group of artists, in collaboration with the residents of the historic Tenth Street neighborhood, are having a storytelling festival and performance using a lot and street corners as their stage.

Congresswoman Johnson is joined by (l-r) COMTO President Julie Cunningham, Rev. Jesse Jackson, and COMTO Chairman Robert Prince Jr.

Washington, DC –Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was recently honored by the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) for her years of work to improve transportation nationwide. During this third annual “Women Who Move the Nation Awards” ceremony, she was recognized as the “United States Legislator Honoree.” The event brought hundreds of minority transportation officials together to discuss the future of the transportation industry in this country and what COMTO can do to ensure maximum participation in the transportation industry for minority individuals. “The movement of goods and services is the lifeblood of this country. It is so vital that we have all the brightest minds and

hardest workers at the table to help push the transportation industry forward,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “I am doing everything I can to make sure we America regains its innovation edge in transportation.” COMTO was founded in 1971 on the campus of Howard University to provide a forum for senior-level minority professionals in the transportation industry. The organization encompasses individuals, organizations, transportation agencies, and non-profits that represent every facet of the transportation sector with chapters all over the country. The “Women Who Move the Nation Awards” was moderated by MSNBC’s Karen Finney and featured a keynote address by Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Story Corners, the day long event, will take place on Saturday, April 12 at the intersection of S. Cliff and Eleventh Streets at Betterton Circle, the site of unused vacant space in the underserved community that will be transformed into a pop up theater where residents will perform themes of the community through storytelling, poetry, spoken word and song. Story Corners is one of several art and design events that are part of the bcWorkshop art and public interest design initiative in the Tenth Street Historic District called Activating Vacancy. The Ark on Noah Street, an installation by Ft. Worth artist Christopher Blay, opened on March 1 and will be on display in the community for 40 days and 40 nights. The Story Corners project team consists of coordinators Linda Jones and Iv Amenti who are writers and performance artists; design and artists Eddie Fortuna, Lauren Cadieux, Erika Huddleston, Abigail Kipp, and Jason Spradling, who will provide stage, design and aesthetic support. The stories for the performances will come from what the residents produced during the community writing workshops held by Jones. Some of the residents will be trained to deliver their work during the performance directed by Amenti. The residents will also participate in creating the pop up stages under the guidance of the Story Corners design team. The Story Corners Project is funded by bcWorkshop through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ware Deserved Better By Roger B. Brown

It has been really amazing to hear all of the accolades hurled Jerry Jones’ way for cutting ties with DeMarcus Ware. And if you’re not careful, the process is so skewed it appears as if Ware is just another one of those ‘greedy and selfish’ athletes who lost a battle with his ego. But such is not the case. In this instance, I think it was the Cowboys’ owner Jones who lost a battle with his ego in an effort to cool his media cynics. But why now? And why with Ware? This is not the time for Jones to find his religion. Given the fact that Ware is still considered in his prime at 31 years old, how could sending him packing be a good thing in any way for the league’s 32nd ranked defense (which is last if you’re counting) ? “I don’t understand why the Cowboys would go this route,’’ said John Wooten of the Fritz Pollard Alliance group and former Cowboys executive. “They didn’t talk about restructuring his deal

like they did with Tony Romo, Sean Lee and Orlando Scandrick, they were asking him to take a pay cut. “I think Jerry got caught up with the media about his loyalty to older players in the past. And I think Jerry really thought Ware would come back here. I don’t think Jerry thought that Ware would get the kind of money that he eventually got on the open market.’’ Ware lasted less than 24 hours on the open market after signing a 3-year, $30 million deal ($22 million guaranteed) with the Denver

the Cowboys organization the best. “But this is no time for me to look back. I’m looking forward to a bright future with my new teammates in Denver. I’ll go out there and continue to do the same things that I did in Dallas for the last nine years. I’ll give it my best and hopefully that will be a part in us winning a championship.’’ In nine years, Ware made seven pro bowls. He also became the all-time sack leader (117) in franchise history. He was everything a team leader

Broncos. Ware was scheduled to make $7.4 million with the Cowboys this season, even though his salary cap figure was supposed to count for more than $16 million. “This was not about pride,’’ Ware said. “It was about doing what was best for me and my family. It was a business decision just like the Cowboys made when they released me. I enjoyed my time in Dallas, and feel like I’ll always be a part of this community. I wish all of my old teammates and

was supposed to be on and off the field. He played with and through injuries, missing only three games in nine seasons. There were no scandals of any kind. Ware epitomized what a future Ring of Honor candidate should look like once his playing days are over. “I just think the world of him,’’ Wooten said. “It does my heart good to see these young guys stand up for what they believe in and make it mean something. For what he gave the Cowboys on and off

18, 2014, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at UNT-Dallas. This event is open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to attend, learn more about the Affordable Care Act, ask questions to qualified healthcare enrollment assistors, and representatives from the Health and Human Services Commission. Giddings explained "Many citizens continue to have questions regarding the Affordable Care Act. Governor Rick Perry decided Texas would not set up its own 'state' exchange, nor expand Medicaid funding, which has led to some confusion in the community's ability to obtain affordable health coverage. This is an opportunity to clear up any confusion or misconceptions." She continued, "the March 31, 2014 deadline is upon us and there are

possible penalties for persons who have not enrolled. Navigators will be on-site at this event and prepared to help those who attend." The organizations that will be present at the event are: The Community Council of Greater Dallas, Texas Organizing Project, and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Each of these organizations will be able to provide information, guidance, and assistance through the application and enrollment process for the ACA healthcare options, including CHIP and Medicaid. For citizens looking to enroll at this event, Giddings and the organizations in attendance recommend that you bring the following information to effectively apply or enroll for healthcare coverage: !

the field, Ware should have been a Cowboy his whole career. “He’s a high-quality guy with great character. We’re not talking about a knee injury or anything; we’re talking about an arm or shoulder. He is an outstanding young man in the community that also has a great relationship with the kids in the community. He is everything you want in your best player when you’re trying to build a championship franchise.’’ The Cowboys say they don’t retire jersey numbers, but no one has worn (No.12 , No. 8, No. 74 or No. 22 since the respective retirements of Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Bob Lilly and Emmitt Smith). Shouldn’t Michael Irvin’s No.88 be included in that group? Oh, I digress…that’s a story for another time. Those are all iconic numbers in the lore of Cowboys’ history, and rightfully so. And the way Ware played in his first nine seasons with the franchise, there was no reason to think that No. 94 couldn’t one day possibly join that illustrious group. Regardless of owner Jones’ wayward past in his handling of what some might say ‘blind loyalty’ to aging stars, Ware should have been treated with the same type of respect. Tell me something, how can one expect the Cowboys’ defense to be any better this season without its best player and leader?

During Brain Injury Awareness Month, Parkland trauma expert urges parents to be watchful

Anyone can suffer a brain injury at any time We’ve grown accustomed to seeing sports stars suffer concussions live on TV – from Olympic snowboarders crashing into the ice when an airborne gymnastic stunt goes awry to NFL quarterbacks sacked by a few hundred pounds of opposing linemen. But did you know that 2.4 million people, including 475,000 children, sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the U.S. each year? And that 5.3 million people in the U.S. live with life-long disabilities as a result of these injuries? During Brain Injury Awareness Month in March, trauma experts at Parkland Health & Hospital System want to help inform the public about risks, prevention and management of TBIs. According to Alex Eastman, MD, Interim Trauma Medical Director at Parkland, “Anyone can suffer a brain injury anytime, anywhere. And just as no two people are identical, no two brain injuries are exactly alike. A TBI is a blow or bump to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts normal brain function. It can be mild or life-threatening and can cause no side effects or result in long-term or permanent disability.” TBIs are caused by falls (35 percent), car crashes (17 percent), workplace accidents (16 percent), assaults (10 percent) and other causes including sports-related injuries (21 percent). About 75 percent of TBIs in the U.S. each year are concussions or other forms of mild traumatic brain injuries.

PAGE 13

!

But TBI is a contributing factor in one-third of all injury-related deaths in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). “We see a lot of serious brain injuries in the Trauma Center at Parkland every year and many of them are, sadly, preventable. People in motor vehicle or bike accidents are frequent victims of brain injury along with people who fall on ice or in their homes. “But a significant number of sports-related TBIs occur in people of all ages. Parents should know what to look for if their kids are participating in contact sports like football or activities like gymnastics or skate-boarding,” Dr. Eastman said. Even though concussions may be described as a “mild” brain injury by health care providers, their effects can be serious. “Most people with a concussion recover quickly and completely,” Dr. Eastman noted, “but for some, symptoms can last for days, weeks or even longer.” Symptoms of concussion include difficulty thinking, remembering or concentrating; physical problems including headache, blurry or fuzzy vision, nausea or vomiting (early on), dizziness, balance problems or lack of energy; emotional reactions such as irritability, sadness, nervousness or anxiety; and sleep disturbances ranging from sleeping more or less than usual to having trouble falling asleep. “These kinds of symptoms can be easily missed. A person with a concussion can look well even though they may be acting or feeling differently,” Dr. Eastman said. Young children (infant to 4 years), adolescents (15 to 19 years) and adults 65 and older are most likely to sustain a TBI, according to the CDC. In

every age group, males are more likely to have TBI than females. One of the danger signs in adults that should alert the patient to seek immediate attention is a headache that gets worse and does not go away. “Sometimes, a more severe problem, like a blood clot on the brain, can mimic the signs of a concussion. Only specialized imaging can show us the difference,” Dr. Eastman said. Other warning signs that the person should go to an Emergency Room right away: slurred speech, weakness, numbness or poor coordination, repeated vomiting or nausea, severe drowsiness or loss of consciousness, convulsions or seizures, one pupil dilated larger than the other, confusion or agitation or other unusual behavior. “Children who have had a bump, blow or jolt to the head can also exhibit these symptoms and should be taken to an ER right away,” Dr. Eastman advised. “Parents should also watch for signs like lack of appetite, failure to nurse or eat and inconsolable crying.” Severe TBIs can have devastating effects on an individual and their family. Two types of severe TBI are closed injuries, caused by movement of the brain in the skull, or penetrating injuries caused by a foreign object entering the skull, such as a bullet or sharp object. As a trauma surgeon in one of the nation’s leading Level I Trauma Centers, Dr. Eastman sees these injuries on a regular basis. “We are trained to save lives,” he said. “Rapid assessment and treatment is critical when a severe brain injury occurs. At Parkland, we are on the cutting-edge of trauma care. But we would rather see these types of injuries prevented.” For more information about trauma services at Parkland, visit http://www.parklandhospital.com/ medical_services/trauma_surgery/

Bits and Bites honors El Centro’s “Founding Father” of Food, Gus Katsigris The founding father of food at El Centro College, C. Gus Katsigris, is on the menu in March – not to be grilled in a celebrity “roast” but to be honored for his contributions to the Dallas restaurant scene and culinary education for more than 40 years. Katsigris, whose roots are in Greece and whose heart is in Dallas, has been a teacher, mentor, restauranteur, chef and even a gastronomic Greek tour guide. His advice is sought by many – and so are his successful students whose talents attract diners from across the DFW metroplex to area eateries. A chef in almost every Dallas kitchen has been trained through the El Centro College Food and Hospitality Institute. Katsigris led the way, rebuilding the program in the 1970s until he “retired” several years ago. “Retired” (as professor emeritus) means that he still has an office on campus, answers his email day and night, recreated a “Vines and Wines” course last year (and wrote a new textbook for it), checks on student-run dining services each week during any given semester, and still finds time to be involved with the institute’s Exes alumni group as well as the Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, the Texas Restaurant Association and other organizations. “Bits and Bites” of sweet and savory things are the highlight of the aptly-titled annual event at El Centro College, which will be held on Sun., March 30. Area chefs will lend their hands and their talents to raise funds for ECC’s culinary arts program as they honor Katsigris. Those funds will help the college expand its Food and Hospitality Institute kitchens and services so that faculty members can inspire and train the next generation of talented food and hospitality experts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The evening’s festivities will feature foods prepared by El Centro’s former students and friends of the college; a variety of wine, beer

and designer soft drinks will be served as well. The cost is $45 in advance and $50 at the door; the event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Student Center on the downtown Dallas campus of El Centro College, located at 801 Main St. More than 150 accomplished chefs in the Dallas area received their formal training at the Food and Hospitality Institute at El Centro College. Katsigris has helped teach and advise almost every one of them, including Chad Houser at Café Momentum; Dunia Borga of LaDuni Restaurants; Marc Cassel of 20 Feet Seafood Joint and formerly of The Green Room; the late Randall Copeland of Restaurant Ava and Boulevardier; Richard Chamberlain of Chamberlain’s Steak and Chop House and Chamberlain’s Fish Market Grill; and Shari Carlson of Dessert Dreams, among many stellar chefs who are graduates of the program, which Katsigris created with Dr. Frances Hitt in 1970. “Every year, ‘Bits and Bites’ honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the program at El Centro College and to the hospitality industry. Gus Katsigris, this year’s honoree, truly is ‘one of our own’,” said Jessie Yearwood, nutrition faculty member for El Centro’s culinary arts program. “Our alumni are accomplished -- they work in every successful kitchen, banquet hall and dining room in north Texas. They also are excited to honor the man who helped inspire them to pursue a career where they can be successful and contribute to their communities, too.” Tickets can be purchased in advance online at elcentrocollege.edu or at the cashier’s office on the second floor of the A Building on campus at 801 Main St. in Dallas. Purchase tickets by mail with checks made payable to "DCCCD Foundation" and send them to: El Centro College, Cindy Bozzelli-Duke, Business and Public Services, 801 Main St., Dallas TX

AKAs plan big gift to support foster care transition

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED ® honors Sen. Royce West, Pat and Emmitt Smith and other local leaders at 82nd South Central

– Afraid. Anxious. Confused. Ill-prepared. These are some of the feelings of more than 20,000 young people that annually age out of the foster care system. According to Childrensrights.org, without reliable adults, many of these youth will be unemployed, become homeless, incarcerated or victimized. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated seeks to turn the tide when they convene for their 82nd South Central Regional Conference in Dallas March 13-16, 2014. Citysquare Transition Resource Action Center and the University of North Texas’ PUSH program will receive this contribution in the form of gift cards for various stores and services so that these young people can get the resources that will benefit them most. “The world can be a scary place if you feel like you are facing it alone,” said Mrs. Wilson. “But with hope, love and resources from the community, these teens can make it.” Alpha Kappa Alpha’s South Central Regional Conference will welcome nearly 8,000 sorority members and guests to Big D. Search on for murderer of Texas couple found outside Fisherman's Cove store in Port Bolivar AUSTIN, TEXAS – Equality Texas urges the Department of Justice and local law enforcement in Port Bolivar, Texas to continue investigating the deaths of a young lesbian couple. The couple, Britney Cosby and Crystal Jackson, both age 24, were found early Saturday. KHOU reports that “Detectives believe the women were killed somewhere else and dumped at the store.” The motive of the shooting remains unclear. "Equality Texas is deeply saddened by this murder and our hearts and prayers are with Ms. Cosby’s and Ms. Jackson’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Equality Texas executive director Chuck Smith. “For many in the lesbian, gay,

bisexual and transgender community this is a stark reminder that nearly a third of Texas' hate crimes are motivated by bias against sexual orientation. A report issued last year my the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs found that 73.1% of all anti-LGBT homicide victims in 2012 were people of color." "I have faith that the Galveston County Sheriff 's department is working hard to bring closure to this senseless tragedy and will work with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Department of Justice to fully investigate," Smith said. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in the composite drawing and tracking down the couple’s car: a silver 2006 Kia Sorrento with paper tags. Anyone with information regarding the victims’ deaths or the stolen vehicle is asked to call the Galveston County Sheriff ’s Office tip line at 866-248-8477.

CABOT CREAMERY OFFERS TIPS FOR QUICK, DELICIOUS RECIPES TO KEEP YOUR BUSY FAMILY EATING HEALTHY Cabot, Vt. – One of the major obstacles many of us face on the path to eating a healthy diet is the same we face when it comes to goals like exercising more, taking a class, volunteering, or starting a business.

· Fill your freezer. Instead of cooking just enough to feed your family for one meal, double the recipe and freeze half. On a busy night, simply pull the leftovers out of the freezer, reheat and serve.

The modern schedule is so crammed with activities, responsibilities, and commitments that we’re often unable to set aside time for even the most important things, like our health.

· Prep food on the weekends. Spending even an hour on the weekend prepping food can make a huge difference during a busy week.

A lifestyle filled with poor food decisions will only add more stress to busy days, which can negatively affect health even further; obviously, something an individual struggling to find the time to eat healthy cannot afford. In observance of National Nutrition Month, Cabot Creamery’s Registered Dietitians have developed a list of simple meal management tips, along with a few easy to prepare and delicious recipes, to help us continue to eat better and feel great. “One of the best parts of March for many people is the beginning of daylight savings time,” says Regan Jones, Cabot Health Team Member and Registered Dietitian. “As we ‘spring forward,’ it begins to stay lighter longer in the evenings, which allows us to fill up our schedules with sports practices and other outdoor adventures. “ The downside of these longer, busier nights is that many people find themselves struggling to eat healthy. Instead of giving in to fast food runs on these longer days, Cabot’s Registered Dietitians want to show you that it’s possible to eat healthy even when you’re busy.”

To keep busy families on track, the Cabot Health Team has created a list of simple tips that are easy to incorporate in any schedule: · Make a meal plan. Take a little time to plan out your meals for the week before heading to the grocery store. This takes the guesswork out of figuring out what to make for dinner after a busy day and makes it easy to come home and prepare a quick, healthy meal. · Use your crockpot. Slow-cooker meals are about as simple as they come. Just dump everything into the pot, set the timer and dinner will be waiting for you when you get home. PAGE 22

!

Prepping foods on the weekend is one of the smartest ways to make mealtime extremely quick and easy during the week. Save time on your busiest nights by: •

Bake some chicken breasts. Slice them up and use on salads and sandwiches.

Chop some veggies and hard-boil some eggs for quick snacks.

Cook a batch of high-protein, Greek yogurt pancakes and freeze. When you need a quick breakfast, simply defrost a few, top with your favorite nut butter and eat!

Make a big pot of soup that’s loaded with beans, lean protein and veggies for easy lunches and dinners.

• Mix together some Greek yogurt, chopped fruit and nuts and freeze in ice cube trays. Pop a few out on a busy day for a quick, protein-packed snack! “On particularly busy days, you can also extend the feeling of fullness by adding protein to your meals,” says Jones. “Dairy foods like cheese and yogurt are perfect. You can stir some Greek yogurt into your favorite sauce just before serving for an added protein boost, top veggies with a little shredded cheese, or bake some quick breads or muffins with Greek yogurt for extra protein and calcium.”

Ingredients: 1 clove garlic, peeled 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 3 ears fresh corn, husks removed and bases trimmed, or 2 1/2 cups frozen corn, thawed 2 California (Haas) avocados, pitted, peeled and diced 6 ounces Cabot Pepper Jack, finely diced (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 cup chopped jarred roasted red peppers 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley

HIGH PROTEIN CRUNCHY PANCAKES Makes 4 servings Ingredients: 3/4 cup “complete” buttermilk pancake mix 1/2 cup (2 scoops) Cabot Whey Protein Powder 1/4 cup walnut pieces 1 cup water Cooking spray 1 cup Cabot 2% Strawberry GreekStyle Yogurt or Cabot 2% Vanilla Bean GreekStyle Yogurt Directions: 1. In food processor, combine pancake mix, whey protein powder and walnuts; process for 30 seconds or until walnuts are finely chopped. 2. Add water and process for 5 seconds or until blended; set aside. 3. Coat large skillet or griddle with cooking spray; place over medium-high heat until very hot, about 3 minutes.

2. If using fresh corn, stand each ear up on end and cut down along cob with sharp knife, removing raw kernels in strips. Break up strips into kernels. 3. In large bowl, combine corn, avocados, cheddar, red peppers and cilantro or parsley. Pour reserved dressing on top and stir gently to combine. Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day.

APPLE-CHEDDAR CRISPS

4. Spoon 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto hot skillet or griddle (don’t overcrowd pancakes) and cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear. Turn over and cook until underside of pancake is golden. Serve topped with yogurt.

SOUTHWESTERN CORN, AVOCADO & PEPPER JACK

Ingredients: 4 Fuji, Granny Smith, Gala or other firm, dense apples 4 ounces Cabot Sharp Cheddar King Arthur All-Purpose Unbleached Flour

For a full day of time saving tastes, try Cabot’s High Protein Crunchy Pancakes for breakfast, Southwestern Corn, Avocado, & Pepper Jack Saladfor lunch, Apple-Cheddar Crisps for a power snack, and Grilled Cheesy Portabello Caps with Turkey & Sage for a savory dinner. Spring Break … Tips for Parent Survival!

Figure out what is important to your family and then tell your kids that you expect them to uphold those values when they are away from you. Remind them that everyone has camera phones, and those pictures will follow them FOREVER. If they are going to drink too much (forbidding it won’t stop it) they need to pick a buddy to watch out for them. I know what college students are like, after all, I was one back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. If your kids are still in high school, don’t let them go on a Spring Break trip without you or a chaperone that you trust—period. This is a recipe for disaster, and no amount of sweet talking by your kid will make it sound any better. If you are unsure whether the chaperone seems trustworthy, err on the side of caution. Better a mad kid than a damaged one. When all plans have been set, release the outcome: Even if you have taken all these precautions, some uncertainty may still remain. It is crucial to take very good care of yourself to quiet the worry that inevitably arises when your kids are outside your sphere of influence. Be sure to exercise, eat right and get plenty of sleep to quiet the worry; there is nothing you can do except take good care of yourself and be ready to act in case of emergency. Set up emergency contingencies before your kid leaves you. Devise a system whereby your kid communicates with you every day, or twice a day, to let you know that they are alive and well. This is not negotiable. It only takes 1 minute to send a text, and, since they love you, they need to show you by doing this one small thing. There are no guarantees that your child will be perfectly safe on Spring Break, just as there are no guarantees that your child will be perfectly safe anytime. Some things are out of your hands. But if you have raised your kid to be a good person with self-respect and respect for others, have faith that your years of effort will prevail and that your kid will make good choices. We can’t keep our kids under our wing forever. Our job as parents is to raise good citizens who better the world by being in it. Eventually, we just have to let go and have faith that our love will guide them even when they aren’t with us. With 22 years of parenting experience and a certified life coach specializing in parent and teen coaching, Terri Fedonczak wants to live in a world where girls recognize their own power and choose to use it for good. On a trip to South Africa, Fedonczak witnessed the power of lionesses as they supported each other within the pride; it was a lightning bolt of realization, leading her on a mission to bring the power of the pride to girls and their parents. Today, Fedonczak takes the girl power message into schools, talking to middle school and high school girls about how to thrive in the wilds of high school/college. MARCH 14, 2014

Life Coach, Parent Counselor and Author of Field Guide to Plugged-In Parenting, Even if You Were Raised by Wolves Website www.girlpowerforgood.com It’s March, and we are prepping for warmer weather, green beer, and the portent of parental doom (cue scary music)—Spring Break. How can such a festive idea evoke so much dread? Because we have all heard the horror stories. I talked with one mom last week who said, “When I think of Spring Break, my mind automatically jumps to Natalee Holloway”; and she’s not alone. I live in an area that is known for Spring Break visitors, as we are near bars and beaches. Every year, at least one teen is hurt or killed by making really poor choices. As parents, what can we do to protect our kids? Here are a couple of simple tips that will help calm the dread. I’m not saying they are easy, but they are simple: Vote for good choices with where you spend your money: My girls are forbidden from going to raunchy Spring Break sites, and I enforce that by not paying for travel expenses to those places. Even though my kids are adults, they are still poor college students lacking funds to sponsor their own festivities. I vote for safer alternatives with my dollars. If my kids want to go to places you see on MTV, they will have to raise the funds themselves. This eliminates most of the arguments right off the bat. I make choices based upon our family value of helping others; sometimes that means helping others make good choices. By basing my decisions on our family values, I don’t have to fight my kids; I just remain firmly rooted in what’s right for our family. Approve roommates, especially if you are paying for the room: Get cell numbers for all the roommates. This may be tricky, but if they want to stay in a room paid for by you, they will comply with your rules. Talk to the roommates to let them know that you care about all of them. Tell them to designate a driver and NEVER leave a friend alone. There are really sketchy people out there who prey upon single girls. Make sure your kids are surrounded by kids who have the same values. This will nip the majority of all problems in the bud. If your kids are paying for themselves, all you can do is trust them: You have raised your kids to act in a way that lines up with your family values. If this family values thing is new to you, this is the perfect opportunity to sit down and discuss your values with your young adult.

RETIREMENT ISSUES 2014 FELLOWSHIP

When: May 18 - 21, 2014 Where: Washington, DC Application Deadline: Monday, March 24 12:00 NOON EDT This all-expenses-paid program for US-based journalists can give you the information, tools and sources to help you develop great, must-read pieces on the critical social and economic issues of retirement. The fellowship includes airfare to Washington, DC, lodging and most meals. Boomers are moving into retirement age, but many aren’t ready to stop working. Delayed retirement and new enterprises are keeping older Americans financially afloat. But a growing percentage of Americans are beyond age 85, and their healthcare needs consume an increasing share of the nation’s wealth. Younger workers, most without traditional pensions, are being advised to step up their savings plans – but are they listening? How many Americans are financially ready to retire? What factors make the biggest difference? What’s the trend for 2014? The National Press Foundation’s 10th annual Retirement Issues program will address such questions as: · What are the implications of the growing cohort of “old-old?” · What are the most important factors affecting ability to retire? · What should retirees know about managing their money? · What are latest trends in retirement living and working? · Is a personal Social Security strategy necessary? · What is the future of long-term care insurance? · Can low-income workers plan for retirement? · How should younger workers approach retirement saving? The program includes lots of time for Q&A and journalist-only discussions. Click here to view Power Points, hear podcasts, and use resources from last year’s program. US-based business, consumer and lifestyle writers and editors, as well as editorial writers, will take away a wealth of new story ideas, sources and methods. Fifteen fellowships will be awarded to qualified journalists working on any platform. Applications must be received by noon EST March 24, 2014. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. APPLY HERE. Selected journalists will be notified within two weeks after the application deadline. Underwritten by: Prudential Financial, Inc. and the NPF Programs Fund.

For more information about Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. or Kappa Zeta Chapter, visit: www.zphib1920.org or www.kappazpb.org Local chapters and auxiliaries of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are once again supporting March for Babies by raising funds and awareness to prevent preterm birth and give more babies a healthy start in life. Zeta members in more than 850 communities across America will participate in their local March for Babies walks. Throughout the year, members host fundraising events, register for Zeta teams and serve as event volunteers. Addressing preterm birth disparities, Zeta members and auxiliaries are at the forefront of raising awareness. Specifically, prematurity affects one out of nine babies born in the U.S. today - a rate that has increased 29 percent since 1981. The numbers are even more alarming for AfricanAmerican babies who have a one-in-six chance of being born to soon. In 2013, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and auxiliaries raised more than $315,000 for March for Babies. This year, Zeta Phi Beta announced its Campaign 2014: “Joining Forces” to raise $340,000 to support the March of Dimes mission. “I am so excited about this year, and we can and will reach our goal,” states Zeta Phi Beta Sorority International President Mary Breaux Wright. “I am pleased about the interest across the sisterhood and look forward to a productive fundraising campaign.” The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes (MOD), founded in 1938, works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Additionally, the March of Dimes, a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies, funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies. For the latest resources and information, visit marchofdimes.com or its Spanish language website nacersano.org. Find MOD on Facebook and follow MOD on Twitter. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1920 on the belief that the social nature of sorority life should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. The international organization’s 125, 000+ initiated members, operating in more than 850 chapters, have given millions of voluntary hours to educate the public, provide scholarships, support organized charities, and promote legislation for social and civic change. Our Year in Review: Accomplishments in Women’s Health By Kathleen Sebelius

Women’s History Month reminds us to pay tribute to the generations of women who have contributed to the

growth of our nation, in public and private life. As we celebrate Women’s History Month and recognize the extraordinary achievements women have made throughout history, I’d also like to reflect on the accomplishments the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has made over the last year to improve the lives of women and girls. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 26.9 million women now have expanded access to health coverage and important preventive care. This means women can receive screenings like mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, and their annual well-woman visits without a co-pay, coinsurance, or a deductible. We also launched the Health Insurance Marketplace, so for the 18.6 million women who are uninsured, there’s now an easier way for them to find insurance that fits their needs at a price they can afford. All private plans within the Marketplace must cover a set of essential health benefits — including many services important to women — like maternity and newborn care. In the individual market alone, 8.7 million Americans will gain maternity coverage because of the

health care law. And perhaps most importantly, you can no longer be charged more for health insurance just because you’re a woman. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection rates in teen girls have been driven down 56 percent, thanks to vaccination. A new study shows that since the vaccine was introduced in 2006, the number of 14- to 19-year-old girls who have one of the types of HPV prevented by vaccine has dropped significantly. Why is this important? According to the CDC, HPV causes about 19,000 cancers in women each year; with cervical cancer being the most common. The U.S. teen birth rate is at an all-time low. In 2012, we found that birth rates for teenagers 15–19 dropped to 29.4 per 1,000 — the lowest ever reported. Since 1991, the rate for teens 15–17 has fallen 63 percent, and the rate for teens 18–19 has fallen 45 percent. We also saw declines across all racial and ethnic groups. We know more about intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and stalking victimization in the U.S.

MARCH 14, 2014

than ever before. For the first time, CDC’s National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey collected data on the intersection of these types of violence and sexual orientation. The survey showed that those who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, or bisexual reported intimate partner violence and sexual violence over their lifetimes at levels equal to or higher than heterosexuals. More than 12 million medically underserved women received quality, culturally competent primary care in 2012, thanks to the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Health Center Program. Cultural competence ensures that a doctor or nurse is able to provide diverse patients with care that is respectful of their cultural and health beliefs, using appropriate languages and tools. As you can see, it’s been a busy but exciting year — and these are just our top five highlights in women’s and girls’ health! I look forward to continuing our momentum as champions for the wellbeing of all Americans. Learn more about how we’re expanding access to quality care by visiting HealthCare.gov.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

In having the conversation about building within South Dallas, many issues arise with respect to GWENDOLYNand JONES education business in Ask The Advocate See ROAD, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
