Message to the People...
My space... Or, how to get along with your roomie!
Cheryl Smith
College students, now you’re on your own. You’re probably about to experience a different lifestyle and you will definitely meet people who have totally different life experiences. Let’t try to make this an enjoyable and memorable experience! ere are many lessons or tips that you should take with you on to the college campus, along with the home training that was provided and your spiritual foundation. Lynette Wilkinson 19
While there are several issues that cause problems, respect for others and their property tops the list of disputes between roommates. I know it is hard to believe, but there are people in prison today and people who are dead because of disputes based on overstepping or disrespecting boundaries. For years you have had to put up with your parents griping about your dirty room and now it’s an issue at college? It sure is because as you show respect for yourself and others, you must keep your room clean and keep your hands off of your roommate’s “stuff” unless you ask first. Make up your bed every day, pick up your clothes, take out the garbage regularly, don’t blast the television or radio, don’t leave food all over the place and keep your stuff on your side of the room. When you have company in your room, make sure that they understand the respect factor and that they don’t infringe upon your roommate’s space. And, send your friends home; especially your “special friend.” It is an invasion of privacy and totally disrespectful to have “relations” in the room with your roommate present, or to displace your roommate so that you can do what you want to do.
Ben Jealous 20
About that bathroom -- KEEP IT CLEAN. Ladies, pick up your towels, personal hygienic items and make up. If it’s your time of the month, no one needs to know -- put that stuff up, dispose of used tampons and sanitary napkins immediate. No one, I mean, no one on this earth wants to smell a menstrual cycle. Most females dread having their own, so they don’t want to share yours.

Hunger in the Land of the Plenty By Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson
Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a study stating that nearly 49 million adults and children reside in “food insecure” homes in America. In Dallas County there are roughly 500,000 adults and children who are food insecure, lacking diets that contain the necessary nutrients designed to keep them well, and prevent them from dying prematurely. Fifty-eight percent of all students in the Dallas Independent School District live in homes that are deemed “food insecure.” In a country as wealthy as America, there are too many people that are hungry. Unfortunately, the reality of excessive large numbers of hungry
families is not new to Texas. While a member of the Texas Legislature, I sponsored legislation that resulted in children from low income homes being provided with free breakfast in public schools. Such a program was needed then, and it continues to be needed today.
As Members of Congress return to Washington to tackle major issues, I remain concerned that some of my colleagues would permit drastic cuts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) program which provides food stamps to needy families and individuals.
Last week, I Hon. Eddie Bernice Johnson hosted a Hunger Summit in This aggressive conjunction with the Dallas agenda to dismantle the SNAP Coalition of Hunger Solutions. program would deny assistance to The coalition consists of the Texas nearly four to six million lowHunger Initiative, the North Texas income people. Many families are forced to ration their meals. It is truly disheartening that parents have to skip meals in order to feed their children. Any proposed cuts to SNAP are disingenuous to the millions of Americans who are working hard to provide for their families. Some of my colleagues are genuinely out of touch with a large portion of the American population. As your representative in Congress, I will vigorously fight any attempts to weaken the SNAP program. I will continue to ensure that those who are hungry continue to receive the benefits that are necessary for their survival.

For over approximately 15 years, the Dallas community has supported Southwest Center Mall (Redbird) and the Camp Wisdom Corridor. We all have shared business changes, and challenges.
To go forth, we need funds, please join us in our GrowSouth "Camp Wisdom Now" Gleaning for Progress Million Dollar Development Fund Raiser.
What you saw and heard on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Southwest Center Mall, was the summation of the many strategy reports. Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins and our community report is a response to the Dallas Plan, Forward Dallas, Mayor’s Economic Development Task Force, ULI (Urban Land Institute)
It’s simple, we need your help to rebuild, rebrand and redevelop the Camp Wisdom Corridor. We are asking you to fill out a $10.00 coin gleaner. Now you know it can happen, we did it together in stabilizing SWC Mall. Because you believed in your community and your Oak Cliff area; we kept the mall and surrounding businesses thriving.
The GrowSouth “Camp Wisdom Now” Million Dollar Fund Raiser is exciting because, everyone can participate in rebuilding Camp Wisdom and helping small business to remain open. During the July 2nd announcement with MPT Atkins and Mayor Mike Rawlings, we introduced three attainable projects; Business Incubator, Redbird Conference & Event Center (SWC Mall) and Small Shops on Camp Wisdom (vacant Office Depot and Dollar General space). From July 3rd to present, we have kept our goals, been diligent in our commitment and had many community brain storm meetings on best practices to fulfill our community commitment.
Our fundraising Initiative is “bold” yet practical. Our financial fund raiser starts September 3, 2013-October 18, 2013. The measurable outcomes goals will create more jobs, increase the tax base and create an exciting economic development. Obama Opts for Diplomacy instead of War by George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-Chief
convinced Assad gassed his own people.
WASHINGTON (NNPA) – Speaking to a war-weary nation Tuesday night, President Barack Obama asked Congress to postpone a vote authorizing him to launch an air attack against Syria while he explores a Russian diplomatic proposal that could rid Syria of its arsenal of chemical weapons. In a televised 16-minute address from the White House, Obama said: “…over the last few days, we’ve seen some encouraging signs. In part because of the credible threat of U.S. military action, as well as constructive talks that I had with President Putin, the Russian government has indicated a willingness to join with the international community in pushing Assad to give up his chemical weapons. Assad has since admitted that it has these weapons, and even said they’d join the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits their use.” In a speech originally planned to drum up support for military action against Syria, President Obama changed gears as he expressed willingness to exhaust all diplomatic initiatives before using force. “It’s too early to tell whether this offer will succeed, and any agreement must verify that the Assad regime keeps its commitments. But this initiative has the potential to remove the threat of chemical weapons without the use of force, particularly because Russia is one of Assad’s strongest allies. I have, therefore, asked the leaders of Congress to postpone a vote to authorize the use of force while we pursue this diplomatic path.” Russia, a close ally of Syria, announced that it had gotten Syria’s agreement to turn over its chemical weapons to Russia, the United Nations and other countries. However, Russia is opposing a UN resolution that would authorize military action if Syria does not follow the outlined plan. President Obama announced that Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with his Russian counterpart in Switzerland on Thursday and that he would continue to hold talks with Putin in an effort to break the stalemate with Syria. Opinion polls show that most Americans opposed taking military action against Syria although they are PAGE 8
!
The latest intervention by Russia gives Obama time to seek more support in Congress. There was little doubt that the president’s plan, at least in its present form, was headed for defeat on Capitol Hill. Postponing the vote spares President Obama public humiliation. In an uphill battle to shift public opinion, President Obama listed and answered many of the “hard questions” Americans have against being involved in yet another war: Won’t this put us on a slippery slope to another war? It is worth acting if we don’t take out Assad? What about the dangers of retaliation? Why should we get involved at all in this place that’s so complicated, and where those who come after Assad may be enemies of human rights? Why not leave this to other countries, or seek solutions short of force? Why should we be the world’s policeman?
building a nuclear weapon, or to take a more peaceful path. This is not a world we should accept. This is what’s at stake.” Obama provided graphic descriptions of the toll the turmoil in Syria has taken on its citizens. On Aug. 21, according to U.S. officials, Assad forces used chemical weapons that killed more than 1,400 people outside Damascus, many of them children. Obama said that put the death toll in Syria to at least 100,000 at the hands of Assad’s administration. The president said he understands the reluctance engage in another war. “Now, I know that after the terrible toll of Iraq and Afghanistan, the idea of any military action, no matter how limited, is not going to be popular. After all, I’ve spent four and a half years working to end wars, not to start them,” he said. “Our troops are out of Iraq. Our troops are coming
home from Afghanistan. And I know Americans want all of us in Washington – especially me – to concentrate on the task of building our nation here at home: putting people back to work, educating our kids, growing our middle class.” Still, the president said, the U.S. has a vested interest in what happens in Syria. “After careful deliberation, I
determined that it is in the national security interests of the United States to respond to the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons through a targeted military strike. The purpose of this strike would be to deter Assad from using chemical weapons, to degrade his regime’s ability to use them, and to make clear to the world that we will not tolerate their use.”
Obama offered a point-by-point rebuttal to each objection, all of which led back to the president’s primary theme: “If we fail to act, the Assad regime will see no reason to stop using chemical weapons. As the ban against these weapons erodes, other tyrants will have no reason to think twice about acquiring poison gas, and using them. Over time, our troops would again face the prospect of chemical warfare on the battlefield. And it could be easier for terrorist organizations to obtain these weapons, and to use them to attack civilians. “If fighting spills beyond Syria’s borders, these weapons could threaten allies like Turkey, Jordan, and Israel. And a failure to stand against the use of chemical weapons would weaken prohibitions against other weapons of mass destruction, and embolden Assad’s ally, Iran — which must decide whether to ignore international law by !

Health Agents warn consumers to be smart, cautious to avoid scams during rollout of ACA Austin, TX - With major parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) taking effect in the coming months, the Texas Association of Health Underwriters is warning consumers to be wary about releasing personal information in the process of purchasing health coverage to comply with the new law. Attempts to defraud consumers have already been reported as scam artists attempt to exploit confusion about the law and illegally gain access to social security numbers, credit cards, bank accounts and other personal information. While the federal government has provided millions of dollars for navigator and other consumer assistance programs to assist with the rollout of the ACA, the lack of screening, training and accountability of those efforts has raised additional concerns about the privacy and security of sensitive information. These concerns prompted 13 state attorneys general, including Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, to request in August that stronger safeguards be considered by the federal government to protect consumers. Beginning in October, consumers and small employers will have the option to purchase health insurance through Health Insurance Marketplaces, referred to as Exchanges. Many consumers will find themselves facing decisions regarding coverage, co-pays and co-insurance that they have not previously considered. The potential for fraud, combined with concerns about inadequate protections in the government’s outreach efforts, have advocacy and professional groups warning that unfamiliarity with the law and details about insurance coverage could make individuals vulnerable targets for identify theft and other scams. As part of the

enrollment in a health plan, consumers will be providing sensitive personal data on applications, putting their information at risk for potential misuse. Mark Bellman, president of the Texas Association of Health Underwriters, stated, “The rollout of the Affordable Care Act could prove to be a perilous time for consumers who fail to exercise caution and prudence in their attempts to purchase health insurance in the months ahead. If consumers purchasing coverage are not confident in their decisions, the process, or the individuals with whom they are dealing, then it is recommended that they seek the advice of a professional benefit adviser in their area.” Bellman continued, “If someone purchasing coverage suspects fraud, then it should be reported immediately to law enforcement officials or the Texas attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division.” Scams involving phone calls and letters fraudulently claiming that all Americans will need a government-issued health card have already been reported. Elderly, low-income and uninsured consumers are primary targets for fraudulent activity. “The scams can be phone calls, letters, emails, even someone at your door,” said Bellman. “Scammers are representing themselves as part of the governmentrequired health insurance plan. Because consumers do not understand the law, they are vulnerable to having their financial records and medical information illegally accessed.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, is warning consumers about giving out personal or financial information in response to the Affordable Care Act. According to the FTC, scammers are using the Affordable Care Act as a hook to illegally access consumer information. Scammers will try to gather bank account numbers, credit cards or other personal information. As the FTC warns, scam artists want information to commit identity theft, charge existing credit cards, debit checking accounts, open new credit cards, write fraudulent checks or take out loans. Bellman added, “Many of the organizations participating in the government’s navigator program are recognized and respected groups that make significant contributions to our society. While their efforts are well-intentioned, we may be placing an unrealistic burden on them given their lack of insight and experience in providing counsel on coverage options and in managing sensitive personal data.”
Vision for Haiti
In their letter, the attorneys general cite the standards of health agents and brokers that include “strict state-level exam-based licensing laws and annual continuing education requirements, as well as significant federal and state privacy, security and market conduct requirements.” The attorneys general reference the 3rd Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament Exchanges’ “lack of standardized background checks” for individuals who may September 17, 2013 have access to sensitive consumer data as an example of the need for stronger consumer protections. The attorneys general point out that health agents are obligated to maintain professional liability insurance and are personally liable if Presented by: they fail to comply with state and federal laws and requirements.
To identify a local benefit adviser that can assist with questions about the Affordable Care Act, individuals may go to ACA Questions.

Dear Afraid of the Truth,
What’s going on with the church brother? Dear SMC: I am a single mom with a 13 year old son. I keep hearing everybody say that a woman can’t teach a boy how to be a man so I decided to seek out some of my church brothers to look out for my baby and show him things that I cannot. We go to church a lot but lately my son gets upset when I say we’re going or I tell him to go hang out with this particular church brother. This man is married with two daughters and he seems to be a great dad and husband but my son is almost in tears when I ask him about doing things with the church brother. I think something is wrong but I don’t know what and my son just gets mad and won’t talk to me. I’m scared to death of what’s going on. Please help. Afraid of the Truth
PAGE 10

Something is definitely wrong. If your son won’t talk to you, find someone that he will talk to. You need to get to the root of the problem because your son could be hiding something that could alter the rest of his life. Furthermore, what makes you think that just because a man goes to church he’s right as rain? Evil and evil doers are everywhere. Do not trust your son with a person just because they clock 40 hours a week at the church house. You should check these guys out just as you would any caregiver. Know where your son goes, what they do, who else is with them and how he feels about the interactions. I’m not saying that something inappropriate has happened, but I am saying that you don’t have the luxury of being afraid of knowing if it has. This truth could set your son free.

Do you think God has an expectation of those whom He’s blessed with certain gifts? I ask that question because believe it or not, we all have spiritual gifts we had nothing to do with acquiring. Very much like Moses, once God picks you, you can’t talk your way out or ignore your way out of doing what God expects or desires you to do with the gift He’s given you. As a believer, one day you realize you are indeed blessed and as such, the expectation should be that you will use your blessings to be a blessing to others. It’s divine law I think. There is no option. It’s like playing Hide and Seek with someone who can see through walls, behind bushes and over trees.

NATURAL HAIR is BEAUTIFUL
Sometimes I think we become enamored with our talents and believe them to be learned skills or attributes we’ve acquired via business training or maybe things we’re just damn good at. Whatever the thought, the fact is you’ve been blessed by God and you need to think what would He have you do, again, with His gifts? Say for instance, you have great mathematical skills and work as an accountant. Maybe you might find a way to use them in service for the Lord. I can personally relate to this because I had to come to that reality that my gift of writing had never been used for anything remotely Godly. I had received recognition of all sorts from my industry from local to regional and some national awards. However, I had written nothing that demonstrated a belief in Jesus, or that show a submission to the will of God, or more I importantly that acknowledged this gift as God given. For those of you who may have read my first column, all I tried to do was publicly claim Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. That became a weekly proclamation of faith via this column. I was fearful at first, which merely hid a flaw in my thinking that I was not worthy to even “speak” in the name of God. Now it is my mission to tell anyone who’ll listen that I take no credit for anything I have. I am blessed and therefore obligated to use what I’ve been blessed with to fulfill what just might be my destiny. Some have said it is a calling. I don’t claim it as a ministry, but I have friends and readers who tell me they see it that way. More importantly, I have received correspondences from strangers who have told me that in some small way my words have been helpful. My goal was not and is not to receive accolades. It is solely to give honor and praise. It is interesting that when you do what God expects, he uses that in ways you never expected. The conclusion then is that God will put opportunity after opportunity in front of you to insure your use His gifts for His purposes and not your own. Hopefully God will continue to encourage and lead as opposed to drag and discipline. In this case I believe you have only two options. Use it or lose it! “Each one should use whatever gift he received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” Peter 4: 10. May God bless and keep you always.

Ford targets Historically Black Colleges and Universities for unique Community Challenge Competition DEARBORN, Mich., -Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company Fund have joined forces with the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" and "Rickey Smiley Morning Show" to launch the Ford Community Challenge Competition for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) HBCU students are encouraged to submit proposals centered around the theme of "Building Sustainable Communities" online by Nov. 10. A total of $100,000 will be awarded in scholarships and grants to recognize students and support unique student-led projects Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company Fund are reaching out to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities for the first Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition.
Up to $75,000 in scholarships, university and community grants will be awarded for the first-place student team and its project. The Ford HBCU Community Challenge is an extension of one of the Ford Fund's signature educational programs, The Ford College Community Challenge. The new program, conducted in partnership with the "Tom Joyner" and "Rickey Smiley Morning Shows," encourages HBCU students to design community projects that address pressing local needs. The program's theme is "Building Sustainable Communities." Students are encouraged to creatively address a tangible, unmet community need that touches at least one of these four areas: Mobility, Alternative Energy, Sustainability/Water and Systematic Approaches to Meeting Community Needs.
Scholarships will be awarded to the student team, and community grants will be awarded to nonprofits to support implementation of the winning projects. The four teams with the best ideas will be flown to Ford World Headquarters in December to present their ideas for final judging. "We are thrilled to be able to continue in our efforts to support students attending HBCUs with the launch of this program," said Shawn Thompson, manager, Ford Multicultural Marketing. "This program will allow students to make a difference in their education, schools and ultimately their communities."
Interested students can learn more about and enter the competition by visiting www.blackamericaweb.com/ hbcuchallenge orwww.rickeysmileymorningshow.c om/hbcuchallenge between now and Nov. 10. "Ford Fund is committed to empowering future leaders through community programs," said Pamela Alexander, director Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund. "We are truly excited to partner with the Tom Joyner and Rickey Smiley morning shows to bring this new and innovative initiative to the HBCU community.

Ask Gwendolyn Baines
I am not pretty! Dear Gwendolyn: I am 16 and just beginning to date. My mother is a product of ‘not dating’ until the age of 16. Although I had no desire to date until now, waiting was not a problem. I have been to several parties with my girlfriends and they were all asked to dance by a boy, but I had no offers. That bothered me until I looked into my mirror and discovered I was not pretty like the other girls’.
Boys 2 men do have a tendency to lurk after what they consider as beauty. I want you to focus on receiving the highest degrees you can – that is more important than to stop and waste precious time being concerned about your looks. As you move into adulthood, you will see those same girls who are popular with dates looking old, run down, beat out, and ugly. What they once had as beauty will be gone. But for yourself, you will always look elegant and continue to look elegant, as you grow old gracefully. Janice, think about it. Another observation you will come to know is that when young girls your age are popular, believe me, it is not their beauty. These young girls are known to display body parts — other than their face. courage to write to me concerning your problem. Let me tell you this: Are you telling me that you have looked into your mirror all your life and just discovered you are not pretty? Either something is wrong with your mirror, or something is definitely wrong with you. There is a thing called ‘self-esteem.’ That is your problem and not your mirror.

DETAILS: When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, the world came to a crashing halt as the nation grieved for its leader whose promise of a brighter future was cut tragically short. During this time the president’s widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, received thousands of letters from the public offering their heartfelt condolences. This touching film focuses on these deeply personal letters that flooded in from all over the country to comfort a woman they greatly admired who was not just the fashionable First Lady, but also a wife and a mother. Set against a treasure trove of archival footage taken during the Kennedy era, the moving letters are read by twenty of today’s top actors including Jessica Chastain, Chris Cooper, Viola Davis, Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Laura Linney, Frances McDormand, Mark Ruffalo, Octavia Spencer, Channing Tatum, Betty White and Michelle Williams. NAACP President/CEO announces plan to step down at year’s end
Benjamin Todd Jealous will remain in role through December 31, 2013 (Baltimore, MD) – NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous announced plans to transition out of his role as President and CEO on December
31, 2013. Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors, accepted his formal letter of notice this week. “We thank President Jealous for his time leading the Association,” stated Brock. “Under his leadership, the NAACP has built a highly competent staff that will carry our mission forward and meet the civil rights challenges of the 21st century. Our board, staff and volunteer leaders throughout the country deeply appreciate his sacrifice, and will continue to implement our game-changing goals for the next half century that
include the restoration of Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, implementing Trayvon’s Law, bolstering civic engagement efforts and ensuring our community is enrolled in the Affordable Care Act exchanges.” “The NAACP has always been the largest civil rights organization in the streets, and today it is also the largest civil rights organization online, on mobile and at the ballot box too,” stated Jealous. “I am proud to leave the Association financially sound, sustainable, focused, and more powerful than ever. Beginning next year, I look forward to pursuing opportunities in academia to train the next

In recent years the NAACP has won state and local battles to abolish the death penalty, shrink prison systems, outlaw racial profiling, expand voting rights protections, reform gun laws, close dangerous power plants, expand early childhood education, secure health care coverage for the uninsured, and more. The Association will continue its as an ally in the fights for workers’ rights, women's rights, immigrants’ rights, and marriage equality, as well as in the struggle to end the HIV epidemic. Jealous will remain with the Association through December 31, 2013.

Lynette Norris Wilkinson, author of the award-winning book UNTOLD: The New Orleans 9th Ward You Never Knew (www.HurricaneKatrinaStories.com)
spoke and signed copies of her book, which tells the true stories of 16 survivors from the devastated Lower 9th Ward where she grew up. Several survivors featured in the book were present to answer questions and share additional insight. New Orleans native, choreographer and performing artist Michelle Gibson gave the history of the New Orleans Second Line dance before leading the audience to participate, accompanied by a brass band.
Vicki Meek Lynette Wilkinson
Vicki Meek, director of the South Dallas Cultural Center, a sponsor for the event, served as emcee. Participants and sponsors for the event received a proclamation from the City of New Orleans and its mayor for their participation and efforts in the commemoration of Hurricane Katrina.
In addition to Ms. Meek, recipients include Lynette Norris Wilkinson; Imani Williams; Michelle Gibson; The Dallas Weekly; The Brass Band; David’s Seafood Grill in Cedar Hill; The Big Easy New Orleans Style Sandwiches in Plano; Barnes and Noble Creekwalk Village in Plano; Red Lobster in Duncanville; G5 Entertainment & JMR Company; and the Smith, Leonard, Norris and Fisher families.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
