Wilson to head Lancaster Police Department When Cheryl Wilson was named police chief for the City of Lancaster, there was another crack in that glass ceiling that for ages remained elusive to women of all ethnicities. She said she learned early on about the challenges of female leadership in a male dominated industry and she prepared herself by working hard, overcoming challenges and showing that not only was she competent, but also confident! Now after a nation-wide search, the “homegirl” will take the helm, becoming the first African American Female Chief of Police for the city of just under 40,000 in Dallas County’s southern sector. Officials say the phones are ringing constantly and the city is abuzz over the announcement and that excitement also extends to the new Chief, who is scheduled to be confirmed at the October 28, 2013 Council meeting. While emphasizing professionalism, integrity and dedication, Chief Wilson

says she is “excited to serve our community and department.” The magnitude of this appointment does not escape the Chief, who says she was prepared for a time like this. Whether it was through her service in the U.S. Army National Guard for 13 years, 24 years of law enforcement experience with the Dallas County Sheriff's Department where she was promoted through the ranks to Assistant Chief Deputy, or her bachelor and Masters Degrees in Criminal Justice and Professional Development respectively, from Dallas Baptist University; she has put in the time and effort. Additionally she attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy and Executive Fellowship Program, while also earning several law enforcement proficiency certifications. In a statement released from Lancaster City Manager Opal Mauldin Robertson, Chief Wilson was praised highly. "Wilson's experience and leadership is complimentary to the City of Lancaster's vision and these
abilities make her selection key towards the continued development of healthy, safe and vibrant neighborhoods," said the City Manager. Admitting that there are challenges, Chief Wilson said she is ready to engage the entire community and one way will be by being visible. “The key is to be involved,” she said, adding that she wanted to establish partnerships while also establishing a quality of life where people can go to work knowing that their property and children are safe. “We would like for them to say, under new leadership there’s a change in the environment and the culture,” she continued. “We’re going to start using the best practices in law enforcement and we’ll encourage feedback.” Citing close relationships with Chiefs from surrounding cities, Chief Wilson acknowledged that her strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate will help her as she moves to this next level.
!
“I do have established relationships and I am anxious to get on the ground and start running, introducing myself and listening to citizens and the business community.” Her message to citizens and those looking for a place to move, “I will enhance the relationship with the community and business and we will have a good culture within the police department,” she said. “We will be more engaged in the community, building relationships and trust.” ********* Citizens can meet Chief Wilson on October 1 during National Night Out Activities, from 6-9:30p. Lancaster communities and the Lancaster Police Department will be participating in this nationwide event organized to build communities through heightened crime prevention awareness, encourage participation in local anticrime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.

Choosing the ideal person to spend my life with is something I take seriously. I met a man who became one of the most important men in my life. For years he treated me like a special woman and I cherished our relationship. There was nothing that I couldn’t talk with him about and I found his intellect to be refreshing and exciting. I just knew our relationship would last forever. He was kind, sensitive, compassionate, thorough, candid, intelligent, knowledgeable and yes, he was also handsome! Much to my chagrin our relationship came to an abrupt end. There wasn’t anything dramatic or controversial. There was no violence, but there were tears. I didn’t take the break-up easy. He changed addresses but I was able to track him down. I went to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center and I even thought about getting arrested because I heard he was working at Lew Sterrett Justice Center. Was I stalking him? I don’t think so. And no, I wasn’t going to do anything to hurt him or his wife. Yes he is married! I just wanted to find a way that we could keep our relationship going. Some people said I was acting desperate--that I must get over him. Unfortunately we were not able to continue our relationship and I was heartbroken. I didn’t know what I was going to do because no one knew my body like he did. He never disrespected me and anytime I felt bad, once I was with him, I definitely felt better. I needed someone like him because I wasn’t jumping into another relationship with just anyone. So, as I looked for someone else, friends told me to expand my horizons, to be open to change. They suggested that I search outside of the African race and also consider women. Of course I was resistant. Having never been with a woman before, I really didn’t know if I was ready. Then I broke down, visited Jill Waggoner, or as she is more popularly known, Dr. Jill, and I was in love again! You see, Dr. William Glaze was serious when he said that he was shutting down his practice and began referring his clients to other doctors. Sure his referrals are some of the best in the business, but for me they weren’t “my Dr. Bill.” Now my search is over and I have a new relationship that I am excited about. Dr. Jill is the real deal! The level of comfort that I felt with Dr. Jill during my first visit has me feeling good all over. My appointment wasn’t rushed, nor did I have to wait an inordinate amount of time to see her. Dr. Jill has an extensive caseload and there’s no wonder because she comes highly recommended and her patients love her. I am so glad I was able to get in to see her. She is the bomb. The best-selling author, lecturer, wife and mother has a Master’s and Medical Degree from the University of Oklahoma. She’s a Dallas Diva, having attended DISD schools and Bishop College. And, she’s a former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader! Dr. Jill is a residency trained, board certified Family Practice Physician who receives high ratings for accurate diagnosis, bedside manner, follow ups after visits, promptness, staff and professionalism. She has also relieved me of many of my qualms and insecurities because she knows her stuff! I thought it would be impossible to find someone like Dr. Bill and I was not open to a new relationship. I only have one body and I can’t turn it over to just anyone. You have to be able to trust your physician and the credentials on the wall. Like Dr. Bill, Dr. Jill is spiritually grounded, compassionate and candid. That’s right, no excuses -- get up and exercise! Check her out. Tell me what you think. I know you will agree that between Dr. Bill and Dr. Jill, I have had the BEST! Dr. Jill Waggoner Charlton Medical Group 3450 West Wheatland Road Physician Offices II, Suite 340 Dallas, Texas 75237

JOHNSON: Peace begins with you By Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson
Peace is best described as freedom from conflict, violence and war. Yet, as we look around our communities and our world today, we cannot say that we are at peace. Brutal conflicts exist in nearly every part of the globe. Yet, the struggle to bring about a world in which peace reigns must continue and begin, I believe, in the hearts and minds of women. Twelve years ago when I conceived the organization named “A World of Women for World Peace,” I believed that the end of human conflict was not only necessary, but that it was possible. In my heart I knew that women, who bring life into the world, could reform the societies in which we live. On September 21st women and men around the world are asked to observe the “International Day of
Peace,” which was established by cause must cease. We cannot allow the United Nations General it to continue. Assembly in 1981. On In my travels that day, people are throughout the world requested to and across our own acknowledge the need country I have met for a world without with legions of war, and to study women that issues that are related understand the to peace such as depravity and turmoil ending hunger, that war and human providing educational conflict causes. The victims of conflict include children who are killed by land mines, and women that are raped and widowed. The senseless suffering that war and conflict
compassion rather than with weapons. It was Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most progressive first ladies to ever live in the White House, who implored the world on the eve of World War II to turn away from the destruction that war brings.
Urging women to take the lead in resolving conflict, she said “If we want peace, we must fight for it. If our civilization is to survive, our people must turn to love not as a doctrine, but as a way of living.” Mrs. Roosevelt understood the important role that women played in creating a peaceful world. If she were alive today she would be standing with me, and with women who understand that our very survival as human beings depends on them, and the role they play in the pursuit of peace. We must live the words of the young female Middle Eastern activist, Malala, who after being shot in the head and left for dead by terrorists said, “I truly believe that the only way we can create global peace is through educating not only our minds, but our hearts and our souls.”
JACKSON: Five years after the crash began By Rev. Jesse Jackson
Five years after the beginning of the financial collapse and the Great Recession, where are we? This week, President Obama offered Americans a progress report. He hailed the steps taken to turn the economy around and rescue the auto and financial industries. He used the occasion, sensibly, to challenge Republicans in the Congress not to do more damage to the slow recovery by manufacturing another unnecessary budget crisis. The president was candid about how far we have to go. He suggested that the very trends that were destroying the middle class prior to the Great Recession have gotten worse. The wealthiest 1 percent has captured virtually all
of the rewards from growth coming out of the recession, while most Americans haven’t experienced a recovery at all. This isn’t an accident. The auto industry was rescued, and the big three are generating profits and beginning to hire more workers. The big banks were rescued, and are now bigger, more concentrated and more dangerous than ever. But while the big boats were righted, too little was done for the boats on the bottom. We still experience mass unemployment, with some 21 million people in need of full-time work. Wages for most workers are stagnant at best. The jobs being created have lower pay and fewer benefits than the jobs that were lost. The housing market is coming back, but about 20 percent of homeowners are still underwater. The rich are getting richer, while the middle class continues to sink. This is a matter of choice, not fate. The government acted quickly and boldly to bail out the big banks, and rescue the auto companies.
But it was slow and timid in offering aid to underwater homeowners, or those displaced from jobs. Citibank was saved from bankruptcy; Detroit was allowed to sink. Now, House Republicans are manufacturing another budget crisis, once more holding the economy and the government hostage, to get what they want. And what they want is to force working and poor people to pick up more of the cost of cleaning up Wall Street’s excesses. They say they are concerned about deficits and about making government smaller, but that’s simply a cover story. They oppose rolling back subsidies to Big Oil, the richest group of companies in corporate history. They oppose shutting down tax havens abroad, where multinationals stash literally trillions of dollars to avoid taxes. They oppose even a law to keep millionaires from paying lower taxes than their secretaries. They want to increase spending on the Pentagon, the biggest bureaucracy of them all.
What do they want? They want to cut up to $40 billion out of food stamps, the program that keeps Americans in trouble from going hungry. They want to defund health-care reform, depriving millions of Americans of the chance to gain affordable health care. They want to cut education, child nutrition, Head Start, Meals on Wheels for seniors, Medicaid and other domestic programs, while providing more money for the Pentagon. Americans respond to calls for shared sacrifice, but the current arrangement lavishes the benefits on the top and exacts the sacrifice from working and poor people. That isn’t right. Five years later, President Obama says we have removed the rubble but not laid the new foundation for growth and good jobs. But a new foundation will require a level playing field. And that will require politicians who will defend principles, not interests. Five years later, we still have a lot of work to do.
Speak out against domestic violence! PAGE 5

SPORTS TALK with Roger B Win-Win Situation By Roger B. I really don’t want her to have another baby but I don’t want her to think I’m giving her permission to have sex by putting her on birth control. Please help. No More Grandbabies
Single Mom Chronicles
Dear No More Grandbabies Forgive me if I don’t quite understand the problem. Your teenage daughter already has a child and you think that putting her on birth control will be giving her permission to have sex. Mom, it seems to me that the one thing your daughter isn’t looking for is your permission.
Congresswoman Johnson on grant awarded to the Dallas Police Department Washington, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced that the U.S. Department of Justice will award a federal grant of $477,337 to the Dallas Police Department for the Fiscal Year 2013 Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. e Dallas Police Department is the lead agency for the North Texas Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, and the funds will be used to continue the operation of the Dallas office of the ICAC Task Force, to build capacity and facilitate relationships among local, state, and federal partners working to prosecute online predators in northern Texas, and to promote Internet safety awareness for children. “I am very pleased to announce that DOJ will award these funds to the Dallas Police Department to help protect children from online predators,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Advancements in technology have made cyberspace a prominent area for crime, and it is imperative we focus not only on apprehending predators, but also teaching children safe practices while on the Internet. I know these funds will be used to ensure that the North Texas task force will continue to work diligently to keep our children safe from online predators.”
Let’s be real. As a mother if you feel that your daughter is sexually active, she probably is. It’s time that you and your daughter sit down mother to mother and look at birth control options. If you pretend that this isn’t something that needs to be addressed, so will she. Your baby now has a baby. So not only should you discuss birth control, but you need to get real with her about STD’s, AIDS and everything else that comes along with the physical act of sex. . SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING By James A. Washington You know one of the things that is almost a necessity when you turn your life over to Christ is to consciously and deliberately surround yourself with other people of faith. Recently I have had the privilege of talking to people who are currently experiencing their own transforma-tions and are exploding in their knowledge and thirst for the Word. I must admit, it’s kind of refreshing for me as I remember my own experience. For those who may not know, in the beginning I was so hungry and thirsty spiritually, that I thought I was headed to seminary. For me, I needed that kind of instruction, or so I thought. When I told a minister friend of mine, he, without discouraging my enthusiasm, mad a valid point. You see one of my misconceptions at that time, was believing somehow, that intellectual pursuit was a solution to most of my confusion or ignorance of just about everything. I could and still do at times, rationalize anything. Boy was I wrong. That kind of thinking kept me out of church and my friend reminded me of that. He let me know as I have stated on numerous occasions, that many people can quote scripture backwards and forwards, but yet have no faith. He thought I would be better served if I surrounded myself with people who were as hungry as I was for the Word. He surmised that fortifying one’s emerging faith was far more important at that time than was spiritual intellectualism. That’s when I started bible study. That pastor friend of mine was right and indeed my efforts to become a mature Christian have been matched stride for stride by those who have attended bible study with me. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to be a part of another person’s spiritual growth. To have someone else recognize spiritual awakening in you is also a wonderful thing; blessing type stuff. That’s why I find it sometimes overwhelming to watch others testify to what God is beginning to do and what He has done in their lives. It rekindles those early feelings I had upon the recognition and acceptance of Christ as my personal lord and Savior. I am reminded of how people responded to me. Friends that I knew for years opened up to my opening up about Christ. Folk that I knew forever and never knew them as believers seemed to appear out of nowhere. Was it them? Or was it me? I’m convinced that until I offered, until I confessed to them of my transformation, they had no way to touch that part of me. Once opened, fellowship had a place to enter my up-until-then walled off soul. “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in Him. Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ-the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” Philippians 3:8-9. Think about it and surround yourself accordingly. May God bless and keep you always.

In our library Turning a hobby into a business By Akilah C. Thompson
News Flash! You do not have to spend the rest of your life working in a cubicle from nine to five every day. Neither do you have to settle for working in a miserable profession that barely pays the bills. Have you ever thought about turning your passions into a business? Is there something you enjoy doing so much you currently do it for free? Have you every thought about how much income you could earn from your hobbies? Passion is one of the key ingredients to becoming a successful entrepreneur! When we are passionate about something , we find enjoyment in sharing our talents with others. So, why should we stop there when we can start making money doing what we enjoy? Let¹s explore what it will take to turn your hobby into a business. With the appropriate planning and an entrepreneurial mindset, you can be on your way to starting a successful business with passion as your foundation.
Tip One: Save! Save! And Save! Before you decide to leave a corporate career or any job to start your own business, be sure to save at least 12 to 18 months of salary. As an entrepreneur, the checks will stop coming every two weeks and there may be times when the checks wont show up as planned. If you have sufficient savings, you will be prepared for those ³Rainy days² which are almost guaranteed to happen. In addition, most of the capital that will be used to start your business will come from your own pockets. You want to make sure you can appropriately fund your business with the start up funds needed to get your business off the ground.
Tip Two: Create a Business Plan A business plan is a snapshot that potential investors and banks PAGE 15
!
look at in order to predict where your business is headed and what it will look like in the future. ³If you Fail to plan, you Plan to fail². Most businesses are unsuccessful because their business plans were incomplete or ineffective. In addition, Your business plan sets the strategic plan and direction for your business to help you make appropriate decisions with the end goals in mind. The Main Components of a Business Plan are: -The Mission Statement / Vision Statement -The Organizational Plan -The Competition -Market Analysis / Market Plan -The Financial Plan -Executive Summary The Mission Statement articulate the purpose of the company¹s existence, their target audience as well as the products and services.
The Vision Statement - is the guiding force behind the mission statement that focuses on the values, aims and the future direction of the company.
The Organizational Plan- is a description of your business, products and services and the goals of the company. In this section, the long term objectives for the company are recorded along with the formulation of the company¹s strategies, tasks and functions.
The Competition- refers to researching other businesses that offer similar services and products within market. This is comparing prices and other marketing techniques.
The Market Analysis - is the study of the market in its entirety that relates to the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats that may arise when launching your business.
The Market Plan- is an essential part because this is
where you develop strategies on how to solicit consumers and business. THIS IS WHERE YOU ADVERTISE!!!!! Use all public relation resources and social media to market your brand. Social media has become the voice to the general public to connect with current and prospective clients. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube allow you to create a presence in the google domain, which will help customers find you on the web. Incorporate social media in your strategy and invest in a good publicist to let the media know about your business. The Financial Plan- is the spine of the business plan because it is a blue print of your business¹ current and future financial state. It is based upon the business¹ balance sheet, income statement and cash flows. In other words, the financial plan captures how much money is needed to start the business including all start up expenses. In addition, the financial plan will forecast proposed revenue for years to come to assess growth potential.
The Executive Summary- is the final piece of the puzzle, and the most important part because it summarizes all the sections of your business plan by extracting the main points. Prospective investors determine whether your business is profitable based upon this section of the document. Make sure that your main points are clear, concise and creative!
SEPTEMBER 20, 2013
Tip Three: Hire an Accountant From day one, you need to make sure that you are recording all financial information pertaining to your business. Exceptional book and record keeping skills is essential. An accountant can help you with tax planning, business plan review, bookkeeping, payroll and other functions that relate to the disbursement of money. As mentioned earlier, the financial plan is important because it is a blue print of your business, therefore having an accountant allows you to maintain order not only in your business but it also gives you a piece of mind that your finances are in good hands.
Tip Four: Live your dream! Now it¹s time to live your dreams. Take all the tips that you have been given above and make your dreams come alive. Businesses are built based on creative and innovative ideas that were given wings to fly. Let your passion, ideas, skills and hobbies allow you to spend your life doing things you love to do as an entrepreneur. Your hobby may be the stepping-stone needed to start a successful career as your own boss Akilah C. Thompson is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of North Carolina A & T State University where she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Business Economics. I Am Giving Up on My Street Walking Daughter! Dear Gwendolyn: My wife left me with two small children. At the time she left, the children were age 10 and 12. That was five years ago. Immediately after she left, I was laid off from a good paying job. I was forced to move in with my parents. My mother especially has been so great in helping me with the children. My daughter is now 17 and my son is 15. My son likes sports, but his sister seems to like nothing. I had her in private school so that she could have a chance to meet a better class of people. Gwendolyn, this is my problem: My daughter ran away from home six months ago. She apparently met a man that has her walking the streets. It hurts me so badly. My mother and I
Dear Jim: I hate to hear of any mother deserting her children. Even when the marriage is bad most women will leave, but only with their children. I congratulate you for apparently seemingly doing a grand job of being both mother and father. Let me tell you this: Some girls are just a bad seed. Putting a child into private school is no guarantee the child will turn out to be good. Think about it. Bad girls and bad boys are in private schools as well. Take care of your health. Your daughter may come to realize her downfalls and shapes up her life. You know that you have done all that is possible to help her at this point. I know you are tired, but Jim, just in case she finds her way back home, — leave the lights on. On the Red Carpet Colin Kaepernick, super popular football player for the San Francisco 49’ers, had on a pair of neon sneakers with a suit. You see a lot of vibrant colors this season. Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.â€?

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
