"Look at yourselves. Some of you teenagers, students. How do you think I feel and I belong to a generation ahead of you - how do you think I feel to have to tell you, 'We, my generation, sat around like a knot on a wall while the whole world was fighting for its human rights and you've got to be born into a society where you still have that same fight.' What did we do, who preceded you? I'll tell you what we did. Nothing. And don't you make the same mistake we made...." El Hajj Malik El Shabazz 1925- 1965

JOHNSON: REBUILDING SOUTH DALLAS By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
The issue of affordable housing has long been a pressing one in Dallas, particularly in neighborhoods Hon. Eddie Bernice that have Johnson historically been neglected by developers. Non-profit organizations s u c h a s t h e C o m m u n i t y Wi d e Development Corporation, began by businessman Sherman Roberts, have attempted to remedy the situation. In June, the company that Mr. Roberts began eight years ago, will launch the Lancaster Urban Village housing and retail development project, located on 2.5 acres of land on Lancaster Road in the southern sector of our city across the street from the Veterans Administration Hospital.
The development, which will be a model for future housing developments in the area, will include 45 apartment dwellings in a gated community with state-of-the-art amenities for families with and without children. Included in the development are a 1600 square foot family- oriented restaurant, and an 8000 square foot office and residential building. The total development costs are $30 million. I was able to secure $8.5 million in federal funding for the project. Since the very first day that I became a member of Congress, affordable housing has been a pressing issue. People need quality places to live, and the Lancaster Urban Village project will provide them with exactly that. Throughout our country, it is clear to elected officials, business owners, community leaders and members of the clergy that neglected neighborhoods can be revitalized through the development of affordable housing, and prudent economic development. Families that are looking for good schools for their
children are interested in living in areas where quality affordable housing exists. A visionary since the time that he graduated from East Texas State, Mr. Roberts, a native of Abilene, does not intend to stop his efforts to help revitalize portions of South Dallas with Lancaster Kiest Village. Their long-range vision includes the development of more than 325 units of multi-family housing, and more than 53,000 square feet of office and retail space in the Lancaster Coordinator. Their plans include developing residences where employees of the VA hospital can live and raise their families. Wi t h t h e c o s t o f g a s a n d transportation rising, imagine the delight of a VA employee who is able to walk from his or her residence in the morning to their place of employment, stop on their way in an eatery to purchase a cup of coffee, and a newspaper or plug in their mobile device. This is the future. This is what Mr. Roberts and his colleagues intend to do.
I have been supportive of their efforts to rebuild our neighborhoods, and will continue to be there for them, securing available federal funds, and encouraging them to seek other sources of support. What City Wide has done with the Lancaster Urban Village project is consistent with Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings’ “Grow South” initiative. The mayor’s plans call for strengthening neighborhoods, schools and cultural institutions in South Dallas. If fully funded and executed properly, it will help to bring about a renaissance in the city’s southern urban core. The Lancaster Urban Village project is a crucial part of a new beginning that is long overdue. Our city will not be the same once the dreams of individuals such as Sherman Roberts and the company that he leads are realized. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.
Steele: Let some good flow from NBA's bad news By Charles Steele, Jr. NNPA Guest Columnist
From time to time, we are presented with what is called a "teachable moment." Often they come when we least expect as is the case of LA Charles Steele, Jr. Clippers owner Donald Sterling. We have heard his vile words with our own ears: "It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with Black people. Do you have to?..." After Sterling told his mistress not to bring Blacks to "my games," he also instructed her not to bring Magic Johnson, either. The controversy provoked by Sterling's raw racism - expressed to a mistress who is part Mexican and part African-American - erupted like a tornado and shook our very foundation of soul.
While we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and still basking in the memory of the 1963 March on Washington, Sterling reminded us that rather than being fixated on the past, we need to address present-day racism. We do not see Bull Connor ordering police dogs on innocent, unarmed school children in Birmingham, Ala. or witness powerful fire hoses knocking elderly African Americans to the ground, but make no mistake: Racism is still alive and kicking in 2014. We must address racism whether it is the spoken words of an NBA owner or the written words of a conservative U.S. Supreme Court majority that is chipping away the foundation of the Voting Rights By Marcaction Morialand anything that Act, affirmative comes close to bringing about a fair and just society. Marc Morial is the CEO of theTo National his credit, Urban NBA League Commissioner Adam Silver, with strong backing from present and former NBA players - some speaking up on race for the first time moved swiftly in banning Sterling from the NBA for life. With a league that is 76 percent African American, it was the right moral, political and business decision. But we can't let this forced and fleeting conversation on race end there.
To Be Equal
As many have said, slavery was America's birth defect. Our Founding Fathers fought for their freedom from Great Britain while denying African descendants "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Bill Bradley, a Rhodes Scholar and an NBA player from another era, put it this way: "Slavery was America's original sin and racism remains its unresolved dilemma." And it will remain our unresolved dilemma as long as we refuse to talk honestly and openly about race until there is a crisis, such as the one created by Donald Sterling. Malcolm X reminded us that we are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose shoes I am walking in as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) gave his life while searching for solutions that would bind people together, not tear them apart. Forty-six years after his assassination, Dr. King's teachings are offered around the world by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) - in communities and countries where people are eager to learn the Kingian theory of nonviolence. A prophet is usually without honor in his
own home, but it is time for us to apply Dr. King's teachings throughout the United States. Accordingly, we in SCLC have created an online petition called "We Won't Go Back." The purpose of this online petition is to recommit ourselves to standing up against racial inequalities, racial hatred and discrimination of any type. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor eloquently argued in her recent affirmative action opinion, we can't just wish racism and bigotry away we must do something to make that a reality. And that's the challenge Dr. King's organization is making now to America. You can join us in this campaign by joining the SCLC at www.nationalsclc.org (click the Get Involved button). It's not intended to be an end, but a start. As Dr. King urged us: "If you can't fly, then run, if you can't run, then walk, if you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward." Will you move forward with us? Charles Steele, Jr., a former Alabama state senator, is president and CEO of the Atlanta-based Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society." Malcolm X PAGE 5

HALL: However Strange: Friends!! Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Charles Dudley Warner may not be prominent among the names of historic American editors and essayists, but he said it best when he said "Politics make strange bed fellows.” Fo r m e r Dallas City Councilwoman Diane Ragsdale may not be famous among city council members around this nation but she should be. Mayor pro tem Ragsdale once said” There are no permanent friends, no permanent friends, just permanent issues." In the more than 30 years that I have been scouting and following politics in my native homeland of Dallas, I have come to know that both of these quotes are viable realities. And while District 6 runoff candidate Joyce Foreman and I may have stood on opposite sides of the fence on several burning issues years ago, I have no problem standing with her now and no intention in seeing her fail to capture that seat.
The District 6 race was difficult for me to call and partly because I have friends among those names that showed up on the ballot. The only person that I did not know was the candidate who led in the primary election. B u t t h e D a l l a s Mo r n i n g endorsement and campaign reports about Bertha Bailey Whatley made many in the district somewhat suspect. Let me make sure that is known that I have no knowledge of Mrs. Whatley. Not now, nor before this race commenced. In fact as I received the barrage of phone calls and a swath of very slick political mailers I called strategists around the city to ask who she was. Elections ain’t cheap!! According to the DMN; “The latest campaign finance reports for the Dallas ISD school board races show that District 6 candidate Bertha Bailey Whatley continues to raise far more money than her four other opponents. Whatley, chief legal counsel at Irving ISD, raised $55,340 in the past month. However, she didn’t raise any money from within District 6.” No w f o r t h e s a ke o f y o u scholarly folks, “however” is a c o n j u n c t i o n . Yo u k n o w t h i s because you used to watch that
television show on Saturday morning… the song went "Conjunction Junction what's your function? The conjunction serves to connect words, phrases, clauses or sentences such as and, but, for and nor. But in this case the conjunction “however” wa s used to let you know that although Mrs. Whatley outraised and outspent all of her opponents tenfold, none of the money came from the district for which she wishes to represent. The conjunction “however,” begs for questions. Where did the money come from? Whose interest will should be serving? Who are the people funding her? We may never have had dinner together attended the same parties or been friends but I do know who Jo y c e Fo r e m a n i s . S h e i s a businesswoman, a tireless advocate for change, and has the kind of strength and resolve that we have not seen since the likes of Yvonne Ewell and Kathlyn Gilliam. The DMN reports that the “Home rule” team has collected more than 48,000 signatures and
will force a vote. I don't know about you but I believe that we need another strong voice, another c o n s c i e n t i o u s o b j e c t o r, a n d someone who knows District 6 as well as she knows this entire school district. Joyce and I have been enemies, and now by vir tue of al l the disruptions regarding public school education in Dallas we are friends. But the one thing that has remained constant in both our battles is the issues. Councilwoman Ragsdale was right; “No permanent friends no permanent enemies just permit issues.” And Charles Warner was right too however because politics do make strange bedfellows. Vincent Ha! is an award-winning writer and author.
Well-deserved honor Heads Up! has just been awarded the Dallas County Peace Officers Assn' PINNACLE AWARD! This award is presented to the individual or organization that has made great strides in the promotion of youth services in Dallas County.

NBJC responds to CNN’s Donald Sterling interview Washington, DC – Yesterday, Donald Sterling, the embattled owner of the LA Clippers, sat down for an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper to attempt damage control after a recording of racist rants by him were leaked to the media two weeks ago. In the interview with CNN, Sterling went back and forth, sporadic at times, denying that he is a racist. But the most egregious part of the interview came when Sterling blasted NBA Hall of Famer and businessman, Earvin “Magicâ€? Johnson. He went on to say that Johnson is not a good example for children because he is HIV positive. The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s leading Black LGBT civil rights organization, strongly condemns the hate-fueled and oensive speech of Donald Sterling. “Donald Sterling’s remarks towards Magic Johnson have insulted and hurt so many, not only in the Black community, but
Donald Sterling
all people of sound mind and goodwill,â€? says Sharon Lettman-Hicks, NBJC’s Executive Director and CEO. “He is clearly unaware of the vast philanthropic eorts that Magic Johnson has directly provided to Black America and his characterization of him being a bad role model for our children because of his HIV status is simply illinformed and dangerous.â€?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among gay and bisexual men, Black gay and bisexual men are most aected by HIV. Research shows that stigma puts gay and bisexual men of all races at risk and may aect whether they seek and are able to receive health services, including HIV testing, treatment, and other prevention services. “Statements like Sterling’s fuel stigma around HIV and have very real consequences, preventing us from achieving an AIDS-free generation,â€? adds LettmanHicks. “His words are a direct attack on our community and NBJC calls for his immediate removal as owner of the LA Clippers. We shouldn’t be confronted with such ignorance in such a powerful position. He has made the case for his own departure.â€?

Parkland stresses importance of knowing signs, symptoms of stroke National Stroke Awareness Month reminder: time equals brain DALLAS – In 2006, Deidre Hannah was an active 30-year-old with no health problems. A nurse, she had worked at several area hospitals, including in the Parkland Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. Alone at home one evening, she became alarmed when her body suddenly began to fail her. “I remember a tingling sensation on my right side, then my legs got weak and I couldn’t walk,” Hannah recalled. “I’d had some neck pain for a few days, but out of nowhere, I had a severe headache and my vision blurred. It hit me like a ton of bricks.” Fortunately, Hannah called a friend, also a nurse, who advised her to hang up and dial 9-1-1 immediately. Making that phone call probably saved her life Hannah was suffering a stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., with someone in America dying from stroke every four minutes. More than 795,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke each year. And stroke costs the nation about $36.5 billion each year, including the cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity. There are two kinds of stroke, according to Mani Alavi, MD, an emergency room physician at Parkland Health & Hospital System. “Ischemic stroke is when a blood clot interrupts the blood supply to a specific region of the brain,” he said. “About 90 percent of strokes are ischemic. The other type is hemorrhagic strokes, caused when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.” Hannah’s stroke was variety of ischemic stroke called embolic stroke, the result of a rare condition that caused both arteries in her neck to rupture, releasing a blood clot that traveled to her brain. “The symptoms of both types of stroke can be similar,” Dr. Alavi said. “They include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination; and sudden severe headache with no known cause. May is National Stroke Awareness Month and we want people to know stroke’s warning signs.” Whatever the type of stroke, swift medical intervention is needed. When an EMS team reports to Parkland’s emergency room that a suspected stroke patient is en route, the Parkland Stroke Team is notified and is ready to begin treatment immediately. The team includes neurologists, ER physicians, radiologists, stroketrained first response nurses, ER nurses, pharmacists and other specialists. “When dealing with stroke, time equals brain,” Dr. Alavi said. “The sooner the patient gets help, the better their chances of recovery.” “When I woke up in the intensive care unit, I couldn’t move, speak or see,” Hannah said. “But I knew I would get it all back, somehow. I thank goodness for the care I got at Parkland’s ER and Stroke Unit.” Years of therapy and her faith in herself and God have slowly paid off. Hannah’s sight returned and she underwent occupational, speech and physical therapy to relearn how to care for herself, walk and speak. She also managed to earn a Master’s degree in nursing and plans to work in a stroke rehabilitation program to help patients like herself. “I feel like I can help a lot of patients because I know what it’s like,” she said. Mark Johnson, MD, neurologist and Director of the Stroke Program at Parkland and one of the physicians who treated Hannah, states that common risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, drug and tobacco use and atrial fibrillation. The CDC reports that 49 percent of all Americans have at least one of these risk factors. “If someone suspects they or someone they are with is having a stroke, they need to seek medical care immediately,” Dr. Johnson advised. “Call 9-1-1 immediately because EMS will transport them to the closest stroke center.” Parkland recently received the Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients. Inviting His Former In-Laws to Our Wedding Dear Alma,

Ask Alma
I am having my second marriage. My fiancĂŠ and I are in our early 40s. His first wife died and he has been raising their 14year-old daughter as a single parent for the past six years. The two of them have a rock-solid relationship with her maternal grandparents, and I think that’s great. His daughter and I get along well, and she seems excited about us getting married. His in-laws are cordial toward me. The mother has broken down and cried at family functions we’ve attended because she misses her daughter, and I can fully understand that, as I am a mother too. My fiancĂŠ and I have been through a lot, and we see our wedding as a new blessing. My question is: Do I have to invite his ex in-laws? He added them to our guest list, but I’m having reservations. G.C., Portland, OregonÂ

Hey now GC, Congratulations on your wedding! I know you’re excited. As can be expected, nestled in your stream of excitement are a few gravel stones pinching at the bottom of your feet. In all the planning and preparing, you want to make sure you’ve got everything covered. That’s what brides do. But hold up, my sista. The emotions and reactions of your guests can be crossed o your to-do list. Listen to what I’m saying for just a minute. I know you want your moment. It’s your day, and I totally agree that it should be, and will be, all about you. Tears will be flowing from both sides of the aisle: Tears from your mother, her mother, best friends who are happy for you, girlfriends who wish they were getting married and, ok, let me stop right there; you get the picture. Women cry at weddings all the time, and for many reasons. Her mother won’t be the only one dabbing her eyes. I’m sure this woman is gracious enough to get through the wedding

When in Doubt, Go Home For most of my life I have been the kind of person who found it hard to ask anybody for anything. Asking for help was like declaring defeat. So I spent a good portion of my adult life consumed with making it on my own. The joke on me was that I had just enough success to actually believe that what I achieved was done so, mostly by my own devices. I’ve since learned that personal or professional success with said perspective can be dangerous and in some cases, spiritually lethal. In a world where you think you’re the reason you got it going on, you give God no credit. As a matter of fact, giving God any praises when you believe it’s all about you actually goes contrary to the spotlight you think you’ve created for and by yourself. In this instance God becomes an intruder sharing in the spoils of your supposed victories. After all wasn’t it your guile and wily ways that got you where you are today? Your life becomes a game of get over, keep away and I’ve got mine, now you get yours. People don’t say this publicly, but, if you know anyone who operates this way, you also know that over time they begin to look and sound quite foolish.

Do you know anyone who has fallen from their own self made perch? I believe God gives us all a chance.

Washington yourself, kept you from heeding the Free will allows us to choose right from advice of someone who only had your best wrong, good or bad, Him or the devil. In the long interest at heart, was your single minded run it’s up to us, but I have to believe the Lord determination to stay stuck on stupid. lets each of us know, wherever we wind up, the

right choice was always Him. We are now and will forever be His “love” children, whether we admit it or not. Have you ever noticed that the older you get the smarter your parents become? I swear by the time you reach middle age, your folks are downright brilliant. If the truth be told, they don’t change. You do. Like our parents, God is waiting, sometimes patiently, for a change in us. Any advance towards him is met with open arms and spiritual kisses. Let me continue my analogy. It is very often hard to admit that Mom and Dad were right all along. Begrudgingly, or maybe never, you finally realized the only thing that kept you from
At this point of revelation, when it’s our parents, you don’t have to say much. All you have to do is show up. Mama knows. Big Momma knows. Aunt Mary knows and they all agree whether to tell Daddy or not. The important thing is you’re home and you’re okay. If you’re lucky, you haven’t wrecked your life permanently. And even if you have they still love you and that fact goes a long way towards your ultimate survival. You draw strength from it.
Daddy’s doorstep and not only is all forgiven, He throws a party in your honor. I believe that’s why so many people cry when they come home to the Lord. The recognition is there that before the “I’m sorry” exits your mouth, forgiveness is understood. The reality that He saved you before you asked just increases the emotional outburst of knowing you’re back home. It’s easier to accept this from family, because we take them for granted most of our lives anyway. It’s more difficult to accept this from God because we don’t really accept or understand the risk of taking Him for granted until it’s almost too late. Like I said, take this from someone who knows. I thank God all the time for showing me the way home in the midst of my madness and my chaos. I pray the same for you. May God bless and keep you always…….
When it’s the Lord, something special also happens. You let go. You let God. Arrogance gives way to humility.

Sean Combs urges Howard Grads to go after their craziest dreams Photo via Howard University Office of University Communications
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Sean Combs presented the commencement address at Howard University to more than 2,600 students on Saturday, May 10. During the ceremony, Howard conferred 105 doctoral degrees, the largest Ph.D. class in the University’s history. Combs gave an impassioned speech and led an energetic crowd in the famous Howard spirit chant, “HU, You Know.” He encouraged the graduates to be fearless, be decisive and fully embrace their inner power. “Do you know how powerful you are?” Combs asked. “When you leave here today, go forth with the knowledge that you have the power to change the world. Embrace your power and turn your dreams into reality.” Combs shared insights from both his time at Howard and his own personal experiences, stressing the support of his mother, the importance of believing in yourself and not being afraid to fail. He also credited his late father for inspiring his business acumen. “I made a conscious effort to follow the entrepreneurial spirit of my father, the legal way,” said Combs. “I want you to take the craziest dream in your head – the dream that you’re too embarrassed to tell anyone else about, and I want you to go after it.” PAGE 14

Combs received an honorary Doctorate of Humanities in recognition of his achievements as an entrepreneur and champion of education. He is chairman, chief executive officer and founder of Combs Enterprises, one of the world’s preeminent group of companies and brands. Howard also granted honorary doctorate degrees to Wolf Blitzer, CNN’s lead political anchor; Clive Callender, M.D., Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine and the first physician to perform a transplant at Howard University Hospital; Benny Golson, internationally renowned jazz legend; and Indra K. Nooyi, chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo. Howard University Interim President Wayne A.I. Frederick pointed to the year’s record-breaking number of graduates from Howard Ph.D. programs as reason for special pride and optimism. He charged the graduates to frame their degrees with love, mentorship, service, compassion and philanthropy. “You earn your degree not just to adorn your wall, but to change the world around you,” Frederick said. He asked graduates to, “Consider what you knew when you entered Howard’s gates and consider what you now know, what you now can do, and
what you now are in a position to become in the next 20 or 30 years. That transformation is what this University is about.” During the ceremony, Howard bestowed more than 950 graduate, professional and certificate degrees, 1,679 undergraduate degrees, and 105 PhDs. Howard University produces more on campus doctoral degrees among African Americans and people of color than any institution in the country. Howard also welcomed the return of John Pinkard, a 1935 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts who later earned a Master of Science degree in 1938 from Howard. In addition, graduates of the Class of 1939 – Hortense K. McClinton and Lydia Mussenden – celebrated their 75th anniversary of graduation from Howard. Graduates come from 40 states, as well as the District of Columbia. The Class of 2014 also represents 33 countries on five continents. Members of the class have received a number of prestigious scholarships and fellowships, including the Luard-Morse Fellowship, and the Fulbright, Rangel, Woodrow Wilson and National Science Foundation fellowships. Native American and African American communities stand together against racism in professional sports Minorities form united front against racism in NBA and NFL sports clubs. -- In the wake of the appalling comments declared by Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, it's worth noting that the same level of racism, bigotry, and hatred survives in the National Football League (NFL). "It's commendable that the National Basketball Association (NBA) has responded in a swift and decisive manner. It reflects the respect the league has for all the races, ethnicities, and cultures that are the fabric of this great nation," stated Kevin Allis, Native American Contractors Association Executive Director. "Now it's time for the NFL to take the same stance by compelling Dan Snyder to change the name of Washington, D.C.'s football team," said Allis. For years the Native American community has insisted for the owner of the Washington football club to make such a change. However, he has defiantly resisted such efforts, and has even engaged in disingenuous efforts to sway support in his direction. Recently, Mr. Snyder created a pool of money that is allegedly designed to assist Native communities. "If you don't like racism, don't finance it. If you don't appreciate being discriminated against, don't finance it. If you don't like stupidity, don't finance it either! After all, money talks...and you-know-what walks," stated Ron Busby, President of the United States Black PAGE 18

Chambers, Inc. "We in the African-American community support the efforts of Native Americans when it comes to racism, and together, we call for members of our respective communities to withhold support for these two leagues until they can both prove their respect to African-Americans and Native Americans," continued Busby.
Tribal members, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.
"Native Americans and AfricanAmericans stand united on many fronts. Alongside our valued friends and business partners in the AfricanAmerican community, we together applaud the NBA, and now demand that Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL follow suit, and remedy another social injustice that should not be allowed to remain by compelling Dan Snyder to change the name of his NFL football team," stated Allis. NACA is a national Native advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., and represents Tribal, Alaska Native Corporations, and Native Hawaiian Organizations across the country. NACA seeks to protect the economic self-sufficiency of America's indigenous people that is enhanced through the participation of its members in the SBA 8(a) program. Spring Bank of America Small Business Owner Report Sixty-three percent of Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners say they plan to work into their golden years, according to the spring 2014 Small Business Owner Report, released today by Bank of America. Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners are more likely than their counterparts in other cities to work past the age of 65 or until they are no longer physically able. The report, a semi-annual study exploring the concerns, aspirations and perspectives of small business owners in Dallas/Fort Worth and around the country, found considerable optimism about the years ahead. Over the next five years, 61 percent of small business owners in the Dallas/Fort Worth area plan to grow their business and 50 percent think their local economy will improve over the next year. When it comes to expectations for their own companies, more than half (56 percent) of area respondents said they anticipate their revenue will increase in the coming year, compared to 52 percent a year ago. Nearly half (47 percent) of Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners plan to focus on expanding their business to new industries and customers over the next 12 months. “Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners have an exceptionally strong commitment to their businesses, working well beyond their years and
conveying continued optimism about the future,” said Julie Hoad, Small Business Banking manager at Bank of America. “The findings from this report reinforce the spirit we see with our clients every day, and we look forward to continuing to help provide them with the tools they need to grow their operations.” Sacrifices on the way to success The report also looked at the effect running a small business has on family life. When asked about the demands of owning a small business, 61 percent of Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners responded that they feel like they should be spending more time with their families, while only 52 percent of national respondents felt this way. The majority of Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners feel they work hard and can balance work and life through an average 49-hour work week. When it comes to work-life balance, three in four (76 percent) feel they have made personal sacrifices for their business, and their most common regret is not spending enough time with loved ones (34 percent). Key differences between men and women The report also delved into the perspectives of women small business owners, a rapidly rising demographic. Forty-three percent plan to hire more employees in the next 12 months, compared to 38 percent of male small business owners in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. Thirty-one percent of women say they get to spend more time with their family as a result of running their small business, compared to 17 percent of men. Additionally, 22 percent of women say gender

stereotypes are a major reason they feel like they should be spending more time on different things, compared to only nine percent of men. Retiring later, with no heir in place Dallas/Fort Worth small business owners are especially committed to their businesses as 67 percent say the reason they want to retire later is because they enjoy running their business and do not want to stop working. This is one of the highest as compared to other parts of the country.
Fifty-three percent of small business owners in Dallas/Fort Worth do not have a succession plan in place, with one-third (32 percent) attributing this to not having a successor. Among those with children, only 26 percent of small business owners in Dallas/Fort Worth currently have their children working for their business, and 38 percent have not decided if their children will run their business in the future. Economic concerns remain Despite an overall optimistic outlook on their own businesses and the local economy, Dallas/ Fort Worth small business owners are still concerned about a number of economic factors. Health care costs top the list, with 70 percent of respondents raising concern. Other concerns include: · The effectiveness of government leaders (66 percent). · The strength of the U.S. dollar (63 percent). · Corporate tax rates (60 percent). Small business owners in Dallas/Fort Worth are also wary about the economy on a macro level, even if concerns are subsiding about economic factors in their own backyard. Thirty-six percent are not confident that the global economy will improve over the next 12 months, and 37 percent said the same about the U.S. economy.

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas
By Patrice J. Holmes
editorial@dallasweekly.com
Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity
Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days
Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
