Message to the People... I’ve heard plenty of songs over my decades on this earth but the movement and excitement I witness extending across any and all barriers is with the song “Happy.” Written, produced and performed by Pharrell Williams for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, “Happy” gets folks up on the dance floor, rocking in their cars and in a good mood. I’ve witnessed folks in church, mosques, clubs, family gatherings, shopping malls and on the streets, moving to the beat of “Happy.”

Several colleges and universities have released videos with everyone in the administration, faculty, staﬀ and student body appearing to know the song and derive pleasure from showing how happy they are.

So I got to thinking. The Grammy award winning Pharrell Williams is a very talented young man. Born in Virginia Beach, VA., the married, father of a son is also a fashion designer. People are clamoring to work with him because he is hot! So, recently as I watched people who were old enough to be Pharrell’s grandparents rushing to the dance floor; I thought about how wonderful it would be if he could also pen a tune that would inspire, motivate, encourage, excite and move people to go to the polls and vote.

But what about the other 94.21 percent in Dallas County, who find everything to do but vote? And that takes me back to “Happy.” I’ve seen folks who were in a bad mood suddenly change into a kinder and gentler person once they hear: “It might seem crazy...”

It’s a real feel good song, guaranteed to put a smile on your face and have you singing to the beat. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a song that moved you to vote? First, however it would have to educate you, which is so important when you consider what is driving those folks who do go to the polls these days. An essential pillar of the health care system in our country is the more than three million women and Hon. Eddie Bernice men who are Johnson registered nurses. On a daily basis, these selfless individuals respond to the needs of humanity and epitomize the ideal of service. They perform critical health functions, ranging from administering medications to changing bed pans. Four years ago, I introduced legislation, the National Nurses Act, establishing the position of a National Nurse for Public Health. The position provided a visible government manager that would collaborate with health care leaders, inside and outside of government, in an eﬀort to address

existing health care disparities, and establish specific goals leading to drastic improvements in the nation’s health care system. As a former professional nurse, I understand fully the role and importance of nurses in our society, particularly in our health care system.

Under the legislation I proposed, the National Nurse for Public Health would advise the nation’s Surgeon General on matters such as health standards, professional recruitment and career development for nurses that are employed by agencies of the Public Health sector and its contractors.

Nurses are invaluable health care resources. That is why I reintroduced the National Nurses Act in the 113th Congress, and introduced a Congressional Resolution recognizing “National Nurses Week.” Congressional eﬀorts to identify a period during which the nation recognized the contributions to wellness made by nurses began in 1954. Twenty years later, President Richard Nixon issued a proclamation recognizing National Nurses Week. Nurses in this country are passionate about their profession. They believe in the art of healing, and frequently risk their personal health to make others whole. Nurses are more than worthy of our support and our praise. They are among the foundational pillars of American society. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

The Grand Governor of the great state of Texas, otherwise known as “Pretty Ricky,” is the worst kind of hypocrite. The self-avowed Christian travels the nation pitching Texas as a great place to do bidness', while never mentioning the gap between the poorest and the richest of its citizens. Texas Governor and failed presidential candidate Rick Perry, may have donned a new pair of a spectacles to make him look more intelligent or possibly even more presidential, his appearance may be the only thing that changed. You don’t have to have 20-20 vision to realize that Perry don’t really care about you or your kids. But a new report by United Health Foundation Rankings proves he don’t care about your mama either. Now I know that you Bible Belt experts would say that the good book says judge you not for you are to be judged. But it also says that you will know that we are Christians by our love. MoveOn.org, the progressive advocacy group, launched an ad campaign in early March of this year that targets Republican governors who have yet to embrace Obamacare's Medicaid expansion. The group plans to use billboards, petitions and rallies to ramp up pressure on GOP-controlled legislatures in six holdout states: Texas, Nebraska, Florida, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Virginia. NAACP presidential selection process again mired in controversy By George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-Chief [FIRST OF TWO ARTICLES]

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – A search firm hired by the NAACP ranked Rev. Frederick D. Haynes, III, senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, as the top candidate five years ago to become president and CEO of the NAACP. But Haynes wasn’t the favorite of Julian Bond, then chairman of the board of directors, who preferred Benjamin Todd Jealous, president of a small, private foundation in California, for the spot. So when the selection process shifted from the search committee to the NAACP’s executive committee, the N A A C P ’s l e g e n d a r y p o l i t i c a l maneuvering came into play. At Bond’s urging, the executive committee opted to present only Jealous’ name to the full board for an up-or-down vote. To no one’s surprise, Jealous was elected (34-21). Though Benjamin L, Hooks, one of the association’s most popular leaders, pastored two churches – one in Memphis and one in Detroit – while serving as executive director of the NAACP from 1977 to 1992, Haynes was told he did not reach the final round of the selection process because he wouldn’t agree to give up his church duties in Dallas. Haynes felt that was a ruse and the experience left a bitter taste in his mouth, with him vowing to never go through that process again. He could have accepted losing in a fair contest, Haynes told anyone who would listen to him at the time. But what was hard for him to swallow was how a venerated organization dedicated to seeking justice and fairness for African Americans could hold an election for its top office without any pretense of being fair. When Jealous resigned last September with a year still left on his contract – after repeated clashes with Board Chair Roslyn M. Brock – applying for the vacancy did not cross Haynes’ mind. But apparently, it was on the minds of some NAACP supporters, who hoped the organization could get it right this time – if Haynes would consider going through the search process again. PAGE 7

According to Board members who interviewed both candidates, they have contrasting personalities. Arnwine, a frequent fixture on television and the conventions of national civil rights organizations, is bold and has a strong personality. Brooks is more understated. Describing him to the Baltimore Sun, former board chairman Julian Bond described him as “the kind of softspoken and well-intentioned person I wanted to have in this job.” Arnwine declined to be interviewed for this article. But one of her supporters on the board said, “All of our civil rights organizations have a problem with a woman serving as their chief, day-to-day spokesperson. Second, the clique that runs the board wants someone they can control, not someone like Barbara, who is talented and her own person.” Another board member who had no favorite among the finalists said, “This is Ben Jealous all over again. They wanted someone they can control and manipulate. You would think they would have learned by now.” Frederick Haynes said he has certainly learned – the hard way. “I failed the test of our ancestors,” he said. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. They got me twice.” Still, he is not bitter. “I wish Mr. Brooks the best. I really do,” Haynes said. “If what I went through is a reflection of how they do business, I hope he doesn’t have to climb over that kind of nonsense. Even though, the gifted head chef lost his job over creative differences with Riva (Hoffman), the

owner of the restaurant, instead of as a result of being laid off, he still found himself faced with the reality of being abruptly, albeit unjustly, unemployed. The heartfelt secondary story focuses on the not-soclose father/son relationship between Chef Casper and his young son, Percy, played by Emjay Anthony. Similar to many career-oriented parents, the culinary expert, who clearly loves Percy, is more concerned with making his mark as a chef than spending quality time with his adorable, techsavvy son, his only child with ex-wife, Inez (Vergara). It is his son’s Twitter 101 lesson one night that sparks the beginning of Chef Carl’s problems and subsequent new leash on life. CHEF is well-written and could not have been cast more perfectly. John Leguizamo is hilarious as Chef Carl’s sidekick sous chef, Martin, and Vergara is charming as the encouraging ex-wife who believes in her former husband’s cooking dreams and still holds a special place in her heart for him. The film is peppered with expletives (probably an authentic glimpse into the language used behind the swinging doors of actual restaurant kitchens), so this is not one for the entire family. It is, however, a must see for the grown and hungry! CHEF is open nationwide in select theaters. -JB

Veterans join members of Bryan Adams High School’s Junior ROTC Program

-Far East Dallas was proud to welcome Heroes House to the community on last week. A robust crowd of veterans, community leaders and residents gathered to celebrate the refurbished development at 2122 Highland Road. The public/private funded supportive housing development consisting of 31-units of one, and two bedroom garden-style apartments was spearheaded by developers Gary Hasty, Ed Spears and Bryan Brown with support from the City of Dallas. Heroes House was established with the mission to provide decent, safe, sanitary, and aﬀordable housing to our nation’s veterans. PAGE 10

In attendance were Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Councilmember Carolyn Davis, Councilmember Sheﬃe Kadane, and Mayor Carl Sherman of Desoto, members of the veterans’ community, as well as the Bryan Adams High School JROTC who led the program with the presentation of colors. Ferguson Road Initiative board member and Casa Linda Forest Neighborhood Association resident Bill Coleman was on hand for the festivities. “The FRI family is doing great things. The weed and seed program is continuing to produce and harvest

The secured housing complex is located in the Forest Hill Neighborhood of East Dallas. Heroes House organization will work closely with the V.A. North Texas Health Care System to provide case management services, in addition to securing HUD/DHA Veterans Aﬀairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Vouchers to supplement the rent and assist with the fees associated with the service providers. !

Blessing are all about you Let me know if you ever feel this way. The whole idea about blessings is becoming more and more clear to me every day. I don’t know if it’s age or not, but life’s experiences do bring perspective to one’s outlook regarding the notion of being blessed. I mean haven’t we all been taught that it’s better to give than to receive. Kindness and goodwill should be characteristics of all of God’s people. Forgiveness and mercy should be staples of the Christian diet. Somewhere someone is saying, ‘that’s right,’ or they should be. The result is supposed to be a reaping, if you will, of untold rewards for a life spent of sowing with no expectation of getting anything in return. If that is what you’ve been told and what you believed, then you also know that when life takes over, it ruthlessly attempts to get you to believe none of that is true. Life teaches you at an early age that

You see God should not have to ask what have you done for Him lately; when all He asks of us is to recognize we are all made in His image. “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” John 12:13. Like I said, being a blessing is the only road to being blessed. Then and only then can you face the nonsense that happens every day in this world with any kind of clarity. May you be a blessing to someone today and may God bless and keep you always.

Sampson to receive Heritage Award from African American Museum DeMetris Sampson has it going on and folks attending the African American Museum of Life and Culture Gala will get a chance to see just how wonderful she is on Saturday, May 31 at the Fairmont Hotel, with live entertainment featuring the David Whiteman Band and comedy from J. Anthony Brown. I’ve seen DeMetris receive number awards over the years and I was especially proud at her acceptance speech when the Legacy of Service Foundation, in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Mu Omega Chapter honored DeMetris at its 25th Image Award Celebration in 2012. The sister does not bite her tongue, or mince words. She is the real deal! DeMetris will be honored once again, adding another honor to her long list of awards and tributes. DeMetris and Ronald (Ron) Parker will receive the Heritage Award; which is the highest honor occasionally bestowed upon supporters who have made immeasurable contributions to the Museum. DeMetris is being recognized for her long-term support and recent $20,000 gift in recognition of the Museum's 20th Anniversary in its current facility. Ron’s leadership as chairman and substantial sponsor of the Museum’s Annual Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame has been unsurpassed. Past Heritage Award Recipients include: the Honorable Alphonso Jackson, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Billy R. Allen, the late Estella Doty, Dr. David C. Driskell, The Eugene McDermott Foundation, Curtis W. Meadows, Jr., the late Hugh G. Robinson, Harry S. Parker, III, Matilda Louree, the late L.G. Foster, Jr., Caritha Smith, the late Mabel Meshack White, Ken Jarvis, Roslyn Goodall, Dr. Wright L. Lassiter, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Levi Davis. It is definitely appropriate that DeMetris receives honors and recognitions because if there is anyone who epitomizes leadership and service, it has to be her. She is a real role model and not a model playing a role. She understands that to whom much is given, much is expected or required. Hailing from a small Texas town, DeMetris attended the University of Texas at Austin where she received a bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1977 and the Juris Doctorate degree in 1980. She also received a Masters of Law in Taxation degree from Southern Methodist University. After celebrating over a quarter of a century with her law firm, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, where she was the managing partner of the Dallas office; DeMetris recently retired, but still continues a life of service to her family and community. DeMetris has the distinction of being the first African American woman to become a partner in a majority firm in the City of Dallas. She appears to be filled with joy the most when she is serving and she has an extensive resume of community service. A life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the NAACP, she is also an active member of the Dallas Bar Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation, the Dallas Assembly, St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church and The Trinity Chapter of Links, Inc. Her Omicron Mu Omega chapter members are quick to point to her beautiful spirit and giving nature, when they talk about their sister. They aren’t surprised to hear that she is being honored at any given time because they know anything she receives, she is more than deserving of, like Humanitarian Award from the Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; The University of Texas School of Law induction into Honorary Order of the Coif; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice Award given by the five local bar associations; the Maura Award from the Women’s Center of Dallas; and the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award given by the University of Texas Ex-Students Association; and, an honorary doctorate degree from Paul Quinn College. Dr. Harry Robinson, of the African American Museum says DeMetris is one of the sincerest and most endearing people he knows. He recently praised her works and philanthropic efforts, and especially her support of the African American Museum over the years. “She’s a philanthropic role model in the African American community,” he said. “Her gifts are very impactful and inspiring to others.” She is also a 2000 recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses “Unsung Hero” Award and in

2001 she was named a Woman of Excellence by Women’s Enterprise Magazine. DeMetris has been recognized on numerous occasions, but the work she is doing is not so that she can receive awards. She takes great joy in serving and giving. Her smile is infectious as she shares her blessings with others. She is so happy when she is giving, it’s fun to watch her in action. Those blessings have come in the form of huge charitable contributions or long hours working on community service projects or working for or heading a campaign. If you want to see real joy, watch her face as she is giving. You couldn’t ask for a better friend! Now, if you really want to hear the chuckle that comes from the depths of her soul as she explodes and grabs hold of everyone in the vicinity; well just catch her at the Dallas Mavericks game. And she’s not a fair-weather fan. DeMetris has been a long-time season ticket holder and when she’s at the games, if there’s one voice that you can count on to be cheering the team on, it’s hers. Usually her sidekick at the games is her sister DeGloria. The two staunch Mavs fans traveled to Miami to cheer their team on against the Heat in the NBA finals and when the Mavs haven’t been victorious, she’s still there. Talk about excited! Now you can’t begrudge DeMetris any fun time. The same level of intensity that is evident when she is having fun is also there when she’s working. DeMetris is tenacious, conscientious, spiritually-grounded, family-oriented and loyal. The consummate professional, DeMetris honors commitments and anyone who deals with her, well, they know where they stand. There’s nothing phony about her and her word is her bond. You know where you stand with her and folks who know and love her can laugh because everyone can not handle DeMetris Sampson, because everyone can’t handle the truth! And don’t even think for a moment that you can pull anything over on her. Her faith is strong so she understands that faith and fear cannot exist in the same space, so she does what is right, even if that means standing alone. When I think about DeMetris, I think about heroines of yesteryear. If everyone has a friend like DeMetris, they are never alone. If all the members of the organizations that she belongs to worked half as hard as she does; the impact would be felt for centuries to come. If all the people who have benefited from her efforts had the stellar voting record that she has, many of the problems facing our communities could be eradicated. Whether she is serving in leadership positions or as a soldier on a team, DeMetris Sampson image is so worthy of celebrating. I could say, ‘boy we need more DeMetris Sampsons,’ but I am just going to be happy with the one we have because she is definitely a force to be reckoned with and the world is a better place because of her. - Cheryl Smith !

Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle's lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. Left to wonder if she will ever find love, Belle falls for an idealistic young vicar's son bent on change who, with her help, shapes Lord Mansfield's role as Lord Chief

Justice to end slavery in England. Directed by Amma Asante and written by Misan Sagay, BELLE is the latest in a string of biopics, think 12 YEARS A SLAVE, LINCOLN, THE BUTLER, et al., that tackle racial discrimination during slavery head on. The Fox Searchlight film was inspired by the real-life portrait of Dido Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray, her Anglo cousin who was already being raised by Lord and Lady Mansfield when Dido arrived at Kenwood House in Hampstead just outside of London. The film is a phenomenal work of art that encompasses the authenticity of the noble standard of living in the 18th century from the corset-laced costumes to the measures implemented to “present” a young adult woman to potential suitors for marriage. Asante’s British-set masterpiece is delicate yet has extremely deliberate messages. The family drama deals with issues that millions of biracial people around the globe struggle with daily — not being White enough to fully benefit from the rights and privileges afforded to the upper echelon, and not being Black enough to relate to the very servants who changed her linens and taught her how to style her naturally kinky curly tresses. The cast is matched perfectly to each character. Mbatha-Raw is exquisite as the vivacious Belle and her love interest, John Davinier (Sam Reid) is refreshing as an aggressive, young activist who sees beyond her skin complexion, believing all humans are equal. Predictably, Wilkinson and Watson deliver outstanding performances, however, it’s Penelope Wilton’s scene-stealing lines as Lady Mary Murray (Belle’s great aunt) that adds a little spice as the never-married elder provides pearls of wisdom to Belle and Elizabeth while recalling her own lost love. Although BELLE, rated PG, is a limited release film, moviegoers’ fascination with real-life stories, as well as the feature’s mass appeal should completely justify expanding to additional theaters. The film has a running time of one hour and 45 minutes. -JB

Why We Want A Teacher Excellence Initiative – By DISD Superintendent Mike Miles

For the past three years, Dallas ISD has been working closely with teachers and other educators to better define exactly what makes an effective teacher and to develop a new comprehensive teacher evaluation system. This Thursday, we will ask our Board of Trustees to approve the fruits of that effort, the p r o p o s e d Te a c h e r E x c e l l e n c e Initiative (TEI). If approved, it will follow another major reform initiative undertaken by the district in the last two years. Last year, trustees approved a rigorous evaluation system for principals based upon performance through observations and student achievement. The concept behind the principal evaluation system is simple: each of our 223 principals is their campus’ instructional leader. They set the tone for effective instruction in every classroom. That’s why it made sense to start with a new evaluation system for principals, followed by continued development and refinement of a system for teachers. Research consistently tells us the quality of a teacher is the single most important school-based influence on a student’s academic achievement. Many of us know the great impact a teacher can have from the interactions, both positive and negative, that we had with our own teachers. Dallas ISD’s proposed system is informed in large part by a study in which the district participated--the Measures of Effective Teaching (MET) study by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its findings indicated that as many as three factors should be considered when evaluating teachers, including regular classroom observations, student achievement data and student surveys. The proposal before the board takes into account all three measurements. In addition, the new evaluation system supports teacher excellence by providing targeted professional development opportunities to hone teachers’ skills, and by compensating them based on their effectiveness. effect, the new compensation system would eliminate the reliance on the “steps and lanes” salary schedule to determine how teachers are paid and instead compensate teachers based upon overall performance. That is a quantum shift for our profession. The majority of teacher evaluation systems—includ-ing the aging PDAS system in Texas implemented 22 years ago—do not clearly differentiate levels of effectiveness. Without that differentiation, districts traditionally have been unable to identify and help teachers who are p r o g r e s s i n g g e t b e t t e r, m o v e proficient teachers toward excellence, or recognize those who truly are exemplary. We are hopeful that the Teacher Excellence Initiative will make it easier to identify the effectiveness of teachers, to support them with coaching and feedback as they grow professionally, and to compensate them fairly for guiding Dallas students to academic success. And, while it has taken three years to develop, we recognize that our plan will likely continue to need refinements over time. As I visit classrooms each week, I see teachers across Dallas ISD engaging students in exciting ways. There is, of course, much progress to make but I strongly believe our school district is on the path toward success. I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of our teachers, principals, instructional coaches and administrative staff in growing their professional practice on behalf of our students. It is making a difference. While no system will ever be able to completely capture everything a teacher does to support his or her students and help them succeed on their academic journey, the TEI proposal represents a well-reasoned, thoughtful approach to measuring the impact that teachers have on their students. Our goal is to be able to grow and develop all of our teachers into the premier teaching force in the country. Students in Dallas deserve nothing less.

Dorcus Sophia "Peanuts" Evans Dorcus Sophia "Peanuts" Evans was born in Dallas, Texas on July 2, 1956 to the parentage of Ernest and Myrtis Ophelia Barber Evans. Her siblings, Ernest Jr., and Pauline Evans, preceded her in death. "Peanuts" as she was aﬀectionately called, was given this name shortly aer her birth, by Mary Berry, head nurse of Parkland Memorial Hospital Nursery, due to her extremely low birth weight. "Peanuts" accepted Christ at an early age, and was baptized and married at the Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastorate of the late Dr. C. B. T. Smith in Dallas, Texas. She was active with the youth choir and Baptism Training Union (BTU). At the time of her death, she was a member of Greater Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, Tx. "Peanuts" was a graduate of South Oak Cliﬀ High School "Class of 1975." Where she was active with the ROTC. Her formal education began at St. Anthony Catholic School. "Peanuts" decided to further

her education by attending Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas, and El Centro Community College in Dallas, Tx. Like her mother, Myrtis, her roots were embedded in political and community involvement. She campaigned for numerous candidates and propositions. She served as an election clerk for many years and as a census worker. Her work experience included Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas ISD and Community Youth Development (75216). In 1980, "Peanuts" married Calvin O. Bell and to this union two sons were born. "Peanuts" leaves to cherish her memories, her beloved sons; MarkPal Bell (Syrceta) and Sergio Bell (Tiﬀany); grandchildren; Dentue, Sergio, Jr., N'Koz ("Tank"), Nija, and Jualin; her caring and supportive mother; Myrtis Ophelia Barber Evans Griﬃn; father; Ernest Evans, loving siblings; Marcus C. Evans (Brendel "B.J."), Paladin C. Evans (Tamela), Curtis Jones, Dorinda Evans, and Sandra Lynn Evans, the father of her sons; Calvin O. Bell, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends, which will all miss her dearly.

Parkland Director of Nursing for HIV Services honored Sylvia Moreno has been 'driving force' behind care For more than two decades, Sylvia Moreno, RN, Director of Nursing for the HIV Department at Parkland Health & Hospital System has been on the frontlines of the battle against HIV/AIDS. On May 17, Moreno was among three recipients of 2014 Crystal Hope Award presented by AIDS Interfaith Network (AIN) of Dallas at its annual Bloomin’ Ball, “Sowing the Seeds of Hope.” “Presenting the award to Sylvia is recognition of the work she had been doing in this community for more than 27 years,” said AIDS Interfaith Executive Director Steven Pace. “She has been the driving force behind the HIV/ AIDS services and care that clients receive at

Parkland’s Amelia Court facility. We wanted to celebrate the special relationship we have with Parkland and the great work that Sylvia has done there.” Moreno said she was honored to be among this year’s recipients. “As a nurse my focus has always been on the protection, optimization of health and alleviation of suﬀering for this patient population,” she said. “I accepted the many unknown challenges, besides medical care.” Sylvia Moreno Moreno has seen AIDS evolve from a death sentence to a more chronic disease, spurring developments in fields from medical, to political to social. “In this epidemic, Parkland has been true to its mission for the citizens of Dallas County and all the counties that make up the North Texas Regional Ryan White HIV service area,” Moreno said. Parkland cares for almost 7,000 HIV patients, and countless others are helped through the Parkland Emergency Department. In addition, Parkland’s LGBT + Employee Network Group, Parkland Pride, served as chair

of the Bloomin’ Ball, the first time a group has served in that role. The co-founders and cochairs of Parkland Pride are Dallas County Hospital District Police Captain Kristi Tillery; Sam Bowers, Director of Quality and Safety Operations; and Senior Leadership Sponsor Ron Laxton, RN, Parkland’s Chief Operating and Nursing Oﬃcer. “We are here to show our support for all people with HIV/AIDS and to help AIDS Interfaith Network by supporting this event,” Bowers said. “All of Parkland is appreciative of the mission of AIN.” Parkland’s HIV services include five HIV clinics, an HIV Prevention Program, the TX/ OK AIDS Education and Training Center, an HIV Consumer Advisory Board, and an HIV Research Unit operated by The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
