Five Things Women Need To Know About Breast Cancer By Lakshmi Kannan, MD
1. Get your mammogram. Studies have shown that your chances of surviving breast cancer are greater if you have regular screenings. Yearly mammograms are recommended after the age of 40 and earlier if you have certain risk factors, such as family history, obesity, and dense breast tissue. Unfortunately, dense breast tissue can also make mammograms less accurate. A combination of ultrasound, MRI and mammogram may be required, and additional imaging or a biopsy may be recommended. Some states now have laws requiring that mammography reports include whether or not women have dense breast tissue.
Do not wait for your yearly mammogram if you notice a lump, swelling, dimpling, puckering of skin, nipple discharge or a new pain in your breast. Contact a health care provider immediately. 2. It could be in your genes. About five to 10 percent of all breast cancers are hereditary. If any immediate family members (mother, daughter, or sister) are diagnosed with breast cancer, your risk doubles. If there is more than one immediate relative, your risk increases three to four times. You can check for genetic mutations, called BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, through a simple blood test. If diagnosed with these mutations, your risk of breast and ovarian cancer increases by 50 to 80 percent, and it may be recommended that you have both breasts and ovaries removed to prevent cancers. Remember insurance companies cannot
discriminate against you based on positive results. 3. Breastfeeding lowers the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding for one to two or more years is beneficial. Even breastfeeding for less than a year has a modest benefit. Health benefits of breastfeeding go beyond breast cancer. It is also shown to prevent Type 2 diabetes and ovarian cancer. 4. Post-menopause and obesity risk factors. Studies have shown that being postmenopausal and overweight (BMI> 30) increases the risk of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer by 30 to 70 percent. The reason is that in postmenopausal women, estrogen gets stored in fat. Increased insulin levels are also said to increase the risk of breast cancer. Losing even four to 11 pounds lowers your risk by 20 percent. 5. New advances in treatment. There are exciting new advances in
estrogen receptor positive, triple negative and HER2/neu positive breast cancers. Pertuzumab and Kadcyla® were approved for advanced HER2/neu positive cancers. Pertuzumab was just approved to be given prior to surgery to shrink the tumor. Studies have also shown that premenopausal women benefit from 10 years of Tamoxifen. Overall, deaths from breast cancer have reduced by 30 percent since the 1990’s. We attribute this to early detection from screening and advances in treatment. Have you scheduled your mammogram yet? Message to the People...
Do you believe in redemption?
Cheryl Smith
The first time that I met Kwame Malik Kilpatrick was on the campus of our alma mater, Florida A&M University. It was Homecoming and there were a lot of celebrations with plenty of food and love flowing. This was before the scandal broke in Michigan, the scandal that would send the former Michigan state representative and Democratic mayor of Detroit to prison. On that beautiful October day, Mayor Kilpatrick was surrounded by his fellow Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers and football players from back in the day. Alumni from across the country clamored to talk to and take pictures with the Mayor. I found the mayor to be charismatic, smart and a joy to be around.
Roger B. Brown 7
Of course I was saddened to hear about his troubles and I wondered who was advising him because his lies on the witness stand were so easy to dissect. And that is exactly what happened! People came forward and there were the infamous sexting transcripts, which shed light on his extramarital affair with his aide. Mr. Kilpatrick shared some of his troubles in his book, Surrendered: The Rise, Fall & Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick . After the release of his book, I interviewed him and he talked candidly about the book, his problems and the future. Last year when I visited with him in Sunny South Dallas, he was in good spirits. There was no hint of the arrogant person that I had heard about from some journalists and a few Detroit natives. It was clear that there were strong feelings on either side, about the Mayor. Some people I talked to were mad, hurt, embarrassed, sad, disappointed and yes, happy.
Marc Morial 14
The thought that someone with such a bright future would end up in jail, is disappointing to me. Well, last week he was sentenced to 28 years after being convicted of public corruption. During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said she hoped to send a message to future politicians. Some feel that his lack of accountability for his actions probably led to a sentence usually given to murders and the like. The rise and fall of Mr. Kilpatrick should be examined carefully. Early in his political career, there was even talk of him ascending to the White House. That was before the charges of racketeering, fraud and extortion, and more.

There are so many young men and women who will be stepping up to serve. It is imperative that they understand the trappings and that they don’t get caught up like so many others, including Mr. Kilpatrick. Decades ago there was a report on the number of Black elected officials under investigation, in prison or disgraced. It wasn’t fun to read and sadly that list has grown significantly over the years. I believe that we haven’t heard the last of Mr. Kilpatrick and that we are going to hear some positive things. Maybe not in the near future, though. After all you have a city reeling from corruption, devastation, crime and bankruptcy. It will take many a while to forgive and some will never forget. I believe Mr. Kilpatrick’s days of service are not over and that his time served, if not overturned in appeal, will be of benefit to the masses.

Lancaster ISD launches 4th Annual District Anti-Bullying Campaign Since the institution of this program in the district, the Lancaster ISD Police Department can proudly report that Lancaster ISD is a ‘No Bully Zone’ school district. The district police have also strengthened the weight of the message throughout the city by incorporating local city and government officials as well as business owners to share the messages with the students.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Lancaster ISD Police Department has joined forces with district students and staff to launch its month-long AntiBullying Campaign designed to raise awareness and share prevention techniques to mitigate bullying, especially in the district. “The campaign serves to increase awareness and is a proactive approach toward this national issue. Students have the opportunity to interact and become a part of the program, to ask questions and get in engaged in the presentation.” Dona Mitchell, spokesperson for the Lancaster ISD Police, said. While bullying is not a new problem in the schools around world, Lancaster ISD aims to make a large impact that will lessen its presence in the district. “Awareness is the key,” Mitchell said. “Our motto is: Protecting and Guiding the Next Generation, we aim to do just that. We see this campaign helping the students make better decision among their peers and being successful in life.” PAGE 4
!
Some standard components of the programs include students taking the annual, ‘AntiBullying Pledge’ where they pledge to report incidents of bullying and not to bully others. Officers remind students to remain aware and explain the appropriate actions to take if someone is bullying them. Students also learn about the different types of bullying: verbal, social and physical. In addition, district officers talk to the students about cyberbullying, which is verbal, and/or social aggression carried out through technology. While serving as Executive Director of Accountability, Dr. Lamont Smith also assists with student services and addresses issues related to bullying. “If students are not aware of the various kinds of bullying, they may be participating without their knowledge,” he said. “We’re talking about good kids who may feel as if they are just playing or interacting in a different way without them being aware that they are causing harm to other students. As we continue to educate our students, we can minimize the impact of bullying.”
The month-long initiative has included and the orange and black striped “No-Bully Zone” placard command bus and a pep-rally style, informational session for all grade levels. Each presentation features the Lancaster High School Tiger mascots and real-life, emotionally charged student theatrical dramatizations.
!
“This year, the program is designed to be even more interactive by getting more students involved in giving feedback.” Mitchell shared. “Our goal is to reach all of the students with a message to let them know that bullying is not allowed and if you are being bullied, report it. Even after the Anti-Bullying campaign season is over, Mitchell expects the concept message and resources to remain active throughout the year. “We will continue to conduct bullying mediations, discuss bullying with students, make bullying resources available on district website, in the police office and by phone.”

From rock hard Tator Tots to Salad Bars, It's National School Lunch Week and the lunch tray has come a long way by Monifa Bandele, Senior Campaign Director MomsRising.org
Remember leg warmers and when ketchup was a vegetable? Is it just me or have the 80's been making a comeback? I can't get the sound of my kids singing Another one Bites the Dust in the car on the way to school out of my head. When I was a kid, I sang that song too! I remember imagining someone actually eating dust, or worse, my school lunch. National School Lunch Week also has me thinking way, way back to chocolate milk, square pizza slices (that needed a buzz saw to cut), rock hard tater tots, and a heaping side order of ketchup. Nostalgia? I know I am dating myself, but I also vaguely remember my parents and others getting fired up about the controversial
proposal about what constituted a vegetable for school lunches. It all started like this: The Ominibus Reconciliation Acts of 1980 and 1981 reduced the budget of the Federal School Lunch Program by 25 percent! So, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service issued a proposal to allow school food services directors to expand (or better yet, cheapen) which food items fit the guidelines for "vegetables." The proposal went as far as listing pickle relish, as an example of a substitute for veggies. Needless to say, this proposal sparked considerable outrage among parents, educators and public health officials. The most well know condiment, ketchup, became the movement's poster child for "veggies gone bad."
Finally, the proposal to upgrade condiments into the elite realm of the vegetable food group was withdrawn before the end of 1981 and never implemented. Its a new day! But, its a long time coming. That incident, more than 30 years ago, gave rise to a movement that has helped to lay the groundwork for today's huge steps forward in school nutrition. Parents have been speaking out and, all over the country state, local, and school-based polices have given rise to salad bars, school gardens, and healthier options in the lunch line. Even better, this year, new national guidelines are taking effect from coast to coast. The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2011 has made way for lunchroom standards that require
more whole grains and double the amount of fruits and vegetables! Many people thought the new guidelines would be a heavy or impossible lift for schools; but parents remained vigilant in speaking out, taking action, and letting all decision-makers know that better nutrition in schools is critical and doable. And, we were right! Last week, the USDA announced that so far 80 percent of schools are serving healthier meals that meet the upgraded nutrition standards. Like all parents, I hope that the images of poor quality school lunches that are low on nutrition and high on fat, salt, and sugar become extinct. I'd also like to limit leg warmers to re-enactments of Flash Dance.
JOHNSON: The Government Shutdown is insane! By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
It has been nearly two weeks since some of the basic functions of our government have been shut down because the extreme right wing of the Republican Party in Congress opposes the Affordable Care Act, and is holding the entire nation hostage because of its position. The impact of the shutdown is enormous. Hundreds of thousands of government employees, including many in North Texas, are not working. Some live pay-check to paycheck, and there is great uncertainty as to how they are going to pay their bills. Businesses in our region that rely on government contracts are being negatively impacted. The shutdown is totally irresponsible and is doing severe damage to our nation’s recovering economy. While those responsible for the shutdown continue to receive their salaries, our military veterans are being PAGE 5
!
From the Congresswoman by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson harmed, new patients are not being accepted into crucial clinical research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Internal Revenue Service is not processing refunds. Our nation’s food supply is at risk because routine FDA food inspections have been suspended. Inspections of food imported from other countries have also ceased. Our national parks have been closed, and the surrounding communities that depend on tourist dollars from visitors are suffering. Food banks in North Texas that feed hungry families will have to curtail their programs if this situation persists.
The shutdown in 1995 cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. It prevented the government from providing for the general welfare of its citizens. Important services to our military veterans were derailed, and our economy was damaged. There are reasonable members in both political parties who would vote to open the government tomorrow if a bill was allowed to come to the floor of the House. But the extremists are making all types of threats and insisting that such a vote not take place. In essence, the Tea Party members that are supporting the !
shutdown are holding the government and the American people hostage, while they score political points with their base. They have an extreme dislike for President Obama, and are willing to do anything to halt the effectiveness of his presidency. Their behavior is not political, it is personal! The Affordable Care Act was passed by the Congress, signed by the president and upheld as constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. It was a signature plank of the president’s 2012 re-election bid, which the majority of the American people supported. As elected officials we are sent to Washington to improve the quality of life for those that elect us. I am working egregiously with my colleagues who understand the vital role that government plays in the lives of people to bring this disaster to an end.

Hard Times at Grambling “He was a great salesman and promoter on top of being larger than life as the Grambling coach. That’s why he got involved in these classics and took Grambling all over the country. Remember, Grambling used to have a weekly highlights show just like all of the so-called major schools.’’
By Roger B. Brown I Messenger
It’s not good for black college football when Grambling State is in such a sorry state.
I know that may sound blasphemous and even offensive to the likes of Jackson Roger B. Brown State, Southern and FAMU, but the truth hurts. However, look no further than the NBC broadcast Notre Dame attendance at last week’s State Fair games all season long, and it also Classic at the Cotton Bowl (a provides coverage of one HBCU generous count of 27,745 when it game _ the Bayou Classic in New was more like 20,000).
And with the turmoil that is raging at Grambling State right now with the firing of Williams, a folk hero in the school’s storied history, as coach, the question begs to be asked: Where does black college football go from here? history of the NFL was an HBCU product. And before Emmitt Smith broke his record, the alltime leading rusher (Walter Payton
Black college football has thrived on these classics for nearly 30 years, with most of them featuring Grambling State. While there may be some who will blame the weather for last week’s dismal turnout at the Cotton Bowl, that wouldn’t have mattered at all had Grambling State been 5-0 instead of a woeful 0-5.
It’s so bad, Grambling State is losing at historic proportions. After winning the SWAC in 2011 in his second stint at the school, Grambling State lost 12 of their last 13 games under Doug Williams, who is maybe the second most fabled figure in school history. “When people think and talk about black college football, the conversation usually begins with Grambling,’’ said longtime black college football writer Lut Williams. “It is known as the Notre Dame of black college football, which is exactly what the great and legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson wanted people to think. PAGE 7

There are only three black coaches (Marvin Lewis of Cincinnati, Mike Tomlin of Pittsburgh and Leslie Frazier of Minnesota) in the NFL, but one of those (Frazier) is an HBCU alum. In fact, Frazier (Alcorn State) is the first HBCU alum to ever become a head coach in the NFL. Before you start screaming too loud, I know Emmitt Thomas (Bishop College) was an interim coach for the Atlanta Falcons.
Remember there was a stretch of time when Grambling State won 20 straight in the series by an average of 30 points per game. That didn’t matter even though the final outcome was a given and never in doubt. The big crowds still showed up to the tune of more than 50,000 for five consecutive years. However, these Tigers don’t have much bite as evidenced by the fact they’ve been outscored by a whopping 228-93!

Orleans between Grambling and Southern, which is known by some as the “black‘’ Super Bowl on Thanksgiving weekend. As a matter of fact, the SWAC office endorses this game even though it means that neither school can take part in the FBS playoffs, which starts the same weekend. And with the turmoil that is raging at Grambling State right now with the firing of Williams, a folk hero in the school’s storied history, as coach, the question begs to be asked: Where does black college football go from here? “They need some star players to emerge,’’ said Jay Walker, ESPN college football analyst and former quarterback at Howard. “That’s the key. People forget that the alltime leading receiver (Jerry Rice of Mississippi Valley State) in the
of Jackson State) also was an HBCU alum. “The first black starting quarterback (James Harris of Grambling) in the NFL and also the first black starting quarterback (Williams) in the Super Bowl were both groomed by Eddie Robinson. And the first black quarterback to ever win a Super Bowl (Joe ‘Jefferson Street’ Gilliam of Tennessee State) got the Pittsburgh Steelers run started. There has been only two black starting quarterbacks in the Super Bowl (Williams and the late Steve “Air’’ McNair of Alcorn State), and both are HBCU products. “So, once again, we need that transcendent talent to emerge and get things going again. A must-see talent that can grab the attention of first black college football and !
“When I was in college at Valley, we always circled the Grambling game on our schedule because we knew that was going to be must-see game that everybody measured your success,’’ Rice said. “Even though we knew the JSU game was going to be huge with probably the biggest crowd, the measuring stick was Grambling.” “Because if you were able to do your thing against Grambling and got the stamp of approval from coach Rob, you knew everybody else would start paying attention. It was the ultimate sign of respect to hear coach Rob acknowledge your talent. “That carried a lot of weight with everybody and made whatever you were doing legit. Grambling was the ultimate standard of excellence when it came to black college football.’’ That is no longer the case and now black college football is suffering the consequences. Roger B. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about my faith walk from the
perspective of those individuals who have tracked my progress from the beginning until now. But indulge me please. Let’s do it again. They seem to have fallen into two very distinct groups. The first who noticed included those Christians around me who like me, rejoiced in my rebirth. I’ve written many columns about those who prayed, rejoiced and some who breathed a sigh of relief at the mere thought of a brand new me. Discovery would be an appropriate description for how I viewed it at the time. To date, I’ve discovered more about people I thought I knew after being saved than I ever thought possible before. Looking back on it, I saw the world and my friends more like a black and white movie. Now they come across in Technicolor, High Definition and Surround Sound. The second group included those individuals who wouldn’t or couldn’t relate to me at all and still can’t. This group also included many so called friends of mine. It’s hard to explain but bible study, tithing, regular church attendance, prayer, praise and trying to live right can bring out an unusual reaction in some people. I know because I used to be one of those folk who avoided anyone or anything that invited God into one’s life. I wasn’t outwardly negative. It just wasn’t part of my program. So in some way, I understood the reaction I was getting. Some thought it was a phase that time would take care of, a guilt trip I’d get over or a self induced high I would come down from. Most couldn’t see the serious nature of my transformation because they also saw me in two shades only; one black, the other white.
PAGE 9
Others just refused to accept the truth that God was the reason for my behavior change. There had to be some other reason, perhaps a hidden agenda. You know salvation and eternity are vague concepts. What in the hell does eternity have to do with right here, right now? What became so easy to acknowledge in church, was difficult, at best, to communicate to those people who you knew and were with you when you did all those things (and enjoyed them by the way) that you just didn’t do anymore. If it weren’t for those Christians who could and did relate to the new me, I might still see the world as only black and white with a bunch of gray people. Believe me, Technicolor is much better. That’s one of the reasons I believe it’s so easy for me to relate to Paul. You want to talk about a transformation! It’s a wonder Paul lived to tell anyone about Jesus. Why should anyone have believed anything that came out of Paul’s murderous mouth? The answer in hindsight is really awesome. The words that came out of Paul’s mouth were indeed put there by Jesus. The same Christ who knocked me down and picked me up is the same guy who slapped Paul into divine truth. As with Paul, I changed because I didn’t have a choice in the matter. If you’re saved, or even questioning if you are, you don’t have a choice either. But do not worry. This is a new you as I am a new me. All you have to do is give God a shot. You’ll soon realize as Paul did, it’s about whom you have become and not about how others can’t let go of who you once were. Sooner or later they’ll come to understand and adjust or they will just disappear from your world or you will disappear from theirs. It’s just that simple. The funny thing is when God knocks you down and then picks you up, (like Paul) you’ll be put on the right path even if you’re blind to it. May God bless and keep you always.
James

Annual Quest for Young Talent To Benefit Kidd's Kids The Shops of Willow Bend will once again host the popular Dallas Child Model Search as hundred of kids take to the runway. Displaying their best smiles before Kim Dawson talent scouts and Dallas Child Magazine editors, participants will showcase their own special “IT Factor” in the hopes of becoming next year’s cover child! Dallas Child Magazine will present the annual event where children up to twelve years old are selected for the cover of next year's Dallas Child, Fort Worth Child and North Texas
Child Magazine issues...36 in all. In addition, talent scouts from the prestigious Kim Dawson Agency, will be on hand "looking for the look". Over the years the agency has reached out to hundreds of participant's parents to successfully represent their children. From print modeling to television, the popular search has discovered young talent and provided modeling opportunities to many model search children. Kim Dawson Agency’s Dee Ann Vernon, the Director of the Youth Division, stated “We are so happy to be participating with all three Child Model Searches! We have found wonderful talent over the past few years. Some of the talent has gone on to book National and Regional print ads, Indie & television movies, and a pilot for the CW network. Although this search is for Dallas Child Magazine, children from the North Texas area from Las Colinas to Denton are encouraged to participate. Each child will not only have the opportunity to walk the runway
before the scouts and editors but also be photographed by professional photographers. Each family will receive a souvenir Dallas Child magazine cover featuring their child that is emailed directly to their home. The model search has selected Kidd's Kids as their new beneficiary and a portion of each registration will go directly to the organization. "Kidd’s Kids is the perfect partner for our annual search" stated Joy Niebes, DFW Child Publisher and Editor in Chief. "The impact of what they have provided to hundreds of children is totally reflected in the smiles they bring to each family's face. We look forward to sponsoring an entire family for this years Kidd’s Kids trip" . Kidd's Kids provides the trip of a lifetime to Disney World to chronically ill children and their families. The search will take place on Saturday, October, beginning at 10 A.M. Subsequent model searches will be held on Saturday, October 19, beginning at 10 a.m. at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano and there
OCTOBER 11, 2013
will be one last search on November 9 at Win Kids Sports & Leaning Center in Flower Mound for North Texas Child Magazine. Participation is open to all children up to age 12, accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is $35 per child for pre-registrations and $45 on-site and includes being showcased on the runway before Kim Dawson scouts and Dallas Child editors, photos by a professional photographer and a personalized souvenir Dallas Child Magazine cover featuring your child. All 36 cover models for the 2014 Dallas Child, Fort Worth Child and North Texas Child Magazine issues will be chosen from the searches and parents will be notified upon selection. The Fort Worth Child Search was held previously on September 21. Kids from Tarrant County may still participate in the Dallas Child Model Search and will be included in the Fort Worth Child selection process.

Ask Gwendolyn Baines
I'm in love with my brother and I'm afraid to tell him. Dear Gwendolyn: I have a problem. In high school I missed going to my junior and senior prom because there were no boys I wanted to go with. I guess you can assume that I have never found an interest in anyone except my brother. I am adopted and my brother was also adopted. At the time of my adoption I was 6 months old and my brother was adopted at birth. I always felt something was wrong. Neither one of us ever knew until two years ago while helping my

mother discarded papers from the attic. Now that explains why I have feelings for my brother.
Jill Dear Jill: That explains nothing. When children are adopted as babies, they grow up as sisters and brothers. However, your problem could possibly be better understood if the two of you had been adopted as older children or pre-teens. I do know of a case where an adopted boy and adopted girl fell in love and married. However, they were both brought into the family at an age where boy/girl attraction naturally happens. But for you to be 6 months and your brother adopted at birth makes this quite awkward. ?I suggest you keep this to yourself and try hard to erase all feelings that you think you have for your adopted brother. Some girls like excitement and you definitely fall into that zing category. If you cannot control your desires, seek professional help. ?Jill, think about it. He is your brother so love him as a brother --- but nothing more. (copyright © 2011 by Gwendolyn L. Baines)

DCCCD Board of Trustees nominates new Chancellor
s
Members of the Dallas County Community College District's board of trustees nominated Dr. Joe May as the sole finalist for the position of DCCCD's seventh chancellor, following a second round of interviews held in Dallas on Mon., Oct. 7. The nomination must be approved by a formal vote of the trustees, following a 21-day waiting period. May, with the approval of his nomination, will fill the position when Dr. Wright Lassiter Jr. retires on Dec. 31, 2013, after 27 years with the district – serving two decades as president of El Centro College and seven years as the district’s chancellor. May currently serves as president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. He previously served as system president for the Colorado Community College System and president of Pueblo Community College prior to that position. LCTCS provides strategic management and support for Louisiana’s 13 community and technical colleges, enrolling more than 101,000 students in associate’s degree, technical diploma and industry-based certificate programs. Those programs are aligned with business, industry and local economies across Louisiana; that network enables students to find good jobs and build careers. May began his administration at LCTCS in 2007. Texas law requires a 21-day waiting period before a formal vote to approve the nomination can be made. Board members will take a public vote PAGE 14

on May’s appointment during their regularly- scheduled monthly meeting on Tues., Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. in the board meeting room (lower level) at 1601 S. Lamar St. in Dallas. "Members of the DCCCD Board of Trustees, who as a group comprised the executive search committee led by Trustee Bob Ferguson, have worked diligently on this national search process since late spring, with the guidance of our search firm, Greenwood/Asher and Associates Inc., Academic Search,” said Jerry Prater, chairman of the DCCCD board of trustees. “We are confident that our nominee, Dr. May, has the experience and the vision that our district needs during these challenging times.” Prater added, “We want the district to continue to grow and expand its leadership role among community colleges in this country – a precedent set by our current chancellor, Dr. Wright Lassiter. We are grateful to Dr. Lassiter for his leadership, his service and his lifelong commitment to students and higher education.” “I look forward to working with the outstanding faculty, staff, administrators and students at each of the DCCCD colleges,” said May. “I am enthusiastic about partnering with some of the best business and civic leaders in the nation as we continue to build on DCCCD’s excellent reputation in academic and workforce areas. “Returning to Texas and embracing the challenges that community colleges face across the state is exciting. Jobs, careers and college completion are critical to our success.” May started his career in higher education in 1978 as an adjunct faculty member with DCCCD when Cedar Valley College opened. Based on that experience, May built on his belief that community colleges are the solution to the challenges that individuals, employers and communities face. DCCCD’s new chancellor, who is a native of East Texas, was the first member of his family to attend college. He earned both his bachelor’s degree in social rehabilitation services and his master’s degree in counseling from Stephen F. Austin State University (Texas), and his doctorate in education from Texas A&M University-Commerce. His higher education experience includes teaching at the community college and university levels; serving as an academic administrator in many different capacities; and conducting higher education consulting for Best Associates, based in Dallas.

Shutdown but not shut out By Marc Morial
In May, we announced the kick-off of our historic “Jobs Rebuild America: Educate, Employ, Empower” initiative – a $100 million, five year multi-platform effort designed to address the nation’s employment and education crisis. Since that time, we have announced grants to our affiliates in several cities across the nation, including Cleveland, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. Our latest announcement, happening today in Atlanta during our Whitney M. Young Jr. Urban Leadership Conference, comes at a critical time of increasing need in our nation. With the government shutdown, many employees are unable to report to work – with many more unsure of when they will be paid and payments to agencies and organizations that provide necessary services to millions of Americans each day being delayed. The current state of dysfunction happening on Capitol Hill makes it more clear than ever – the problems facing our nation can only be solved through a non-partisan, partnership effort that includes the business and nonprofit sectors.
!
Through our tripod model of federal government, business, and nonprofit partnership, Jobs Rebuild America is creating economic opportunity in 50 communities nationwide through the Urban League affiliate network and is reaching jobseekers, vulnerable youth and entrepreneurs. Through the restorative justice component, we are helping ensure that communities across America are safer and that youth who have been involved in the criminal justice system are being rehabilitated by providing a platform for them to give something positive back to their neighborhoods to make up for their criminal offenses. With Jobs Rebuild America program offerings from job-training for youth and mature workers, college preparation, and a jobs network to entrepreneurship support, small business financing and resources, and tax credits, we are on the ground everyday working for the people who need us most. Our government may have shut down. But our lights are on in communities across the nation as we work to ensure that no one else gets shut out. Marc Morial is the president/CEO of the National Urban League. He is also the former Mayor of New Orleans.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. “I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
