Tavis Smiley launches Four-Year Long Anti-Poverty by AFRO Staﬀ

Media personality and activist Tavis Smiley has been an outspoken and persistent advocate of ending poverty in America, culminating in the radio host and his foundation recently initiating “ENDING POVERTY: America’s Silent Spaces,” a $3 million, four-year nationwide initiative to examine the causes of, and identify solutions for, poverty in the United States. The initiative seeks momentum from two book-end historical commemorations, the 50th anniversaries of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty” in 2014 and of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Poor People's Campaign,” in 2018, to refocus the nation’s attention on the millions who struggle to survive below the poverty line. “The fight to end poverty is not a new one,” Smiley said in a statement. “Our actions must be viewed as part of an ongoing historical eﬀort to exorcise this persistent cancer. “When Dr. King spearheaded the Poor People’s Campaign, he talked about issues that could have been pulled from today's headlines. Full employment, fair wages, housing and basic human needs will always be relevant and they must be available to all.” Smiley added, “Like President Franklin D. For decades I have watched cultural event come and go in Dallas, TX. For some reason, events like the Black Family Reunion, Black Expo and Sister to Sister have tried to build a base in the Big D, but for some reason the organizers did not get the traction or support they wanted so they moved on. Time and time again, I have heard people say that Dallas is a strange beast where it is hard to galvanize the masses. Well, I remember the masses, to the tune of over 10,000 in the inaugural year of KwanzaaFest and steadily growing to well over 50,000 in recent years. Now the 10,000 number was one that the media reported, based on their calculations of the thousands who made their way to Lincoln High School for the cultural festival, celebrating the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Everyone was surprised at the overwhelming response from the vendors, business community and citizens. Over the years, KwanzaaFest was a great place to see old friends, pick up unique items, support Black businesses and receive hundreds of dollars in health screenings. I also liked the idea of visiting with the entrepreneurs who present their wares for sale. Last week, there were reports that after 22 years, KwanzaaFest would not be occurring this year. I know that I was not the only person disappointed. Actually I was more than disappointed! While there are cities across America that have cultural festivals every month, I didn’t want to hear about another program leaving the city because of apathy, fear, or ambivalence. Sure corporate sponsorship is important, but there has to be the support from the community and thankfully that support has not wavered.

Appeals Court Blocks Abortion Access for One-Third of Texas Appeals Court Allows Unconstitutional Abortion Restrictions – Planned Parenthood pledges to continue to fight for Patients Austin, TX — A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit granted Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott’s request to lift the permanent injunction entered by a federal district court Monday, allowing a measure that will make safe and legal abortion virtually impossible for one-third of Texas women in need of access. The requirement that physicians who provide abortions obtain admitting

privileges at a local hospital is expected to cause at least onethird of the state’s licensed health centers that currently provide abortion to stop oﬀering the service immediately. As a result, abortion will no longer be available in vast stretches of Texas, including areas surrounding Fort Worth, Harlingen, Killeen, McAllen, and Waco. I n striking down the measure as unconstitutional, U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel said the admitting privileges requirement has “no rational relationship to improved patient care” and also “places an undue burden on a woman seeking an abortion.” The only part of Judge Yeakel’s injunction that remains is allowing the use of medication abortion for a woman between 50 and 63 days of pregnancy if she has a

medical need for that procedure. Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America: “This fight is far from over. This restriction clearly violates Texas women’s constitutional rights by drastically reducing access to safe and legal abortion statewide. If Texans showed America one thing during the historic protests against this law this summer, we demonstrated that Texans value women’s health — and that is why we will take every step we can to protect the health of Texas women in the wake of this ruling.” The lawsuit, Planned Parenthood v. Abbott, was jointly filed on September 27 on behalf of more than a dozen Texas health care providers and their patients by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the

Center for Reproductive Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Texas law firm George Brothers Kincaid & Horton. These dangerous and unconstitutional provisions were part of a package of legislation signed by Governor Rick Perry on July 18 following a series of special legislative sessions, but opposed by 80 percent of Texas voters, according to a poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. Medical experts in Texas and across the country, including the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Texas Medical Association, and Texas Hospital Association, publicly opposed provisions in the law because they provide no medical benefit to women and will actually jeopardize women’s health and safety.

CHISD SCHOOL BENEFITS FROM DAY OF CARING PEPSICO Volunteers Upgrade Lake Ridge Elementary Playground Forty volunteers from Pepsico worked on various projects on the grounds of Lake Ridge Elementary School in Cedar Hill, Texas on Friday October 25, 2013. It was all part of a "Day of Caring". The volunteers worked on updating the playground and schoolyard. The volunteers completed the following projects: · Removed the obsolete garden fence and mowed down the weeds. · Fixed up the raised gardens; Replaced missing cinder blocks, weed, paint blocks white, put gravel walkway between gardens. · Refurbished playground mulch; removed weeds. · Painted seven foursquare courts. · Painted three hopscotch courts. · Built four portable tetherball poles in tires. · Painted U.S. Map on concrete. The school and Pepsico connected through the United Way. Lake Ridge physical education teacher Myron Courtney won a grant from United Way through the Healthy School Zone program. As a part of the grant process Courtney had submitted a wish list of things the school wanted for its playground. When Pepsico called the United Way asking for volunteer projects it selected Lake Ridge Elementary as one of the recipients. "Lake Ridge Elementary is honored to be chosen as the recipients of such a wonderful gift. As a part of United Way 'Day of Caring Campaign', PepsiCo has

donated funds, equipment, and volunteers to help beautify our

Dez for Prez fans and sports gladiators just enjoyed the game. There were some crazy people out there. Some driven by enthusiasm. Some driven by inebriation. But all of them crazy. Funny thing though…everybody was safe there was no reason for real alarm. It was emotion, not commotion. By Vincent Hall Special to I Messenger

I have been watching and following all of the integral statistics of the Dallas Cowboys since I was six years old. My uncle, a butcher for a grocery store, took me and my brother to game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys in 1965. I remember it well because the historic Cotton Bowl was crazy with the fuel of fans. Children were allowed in the game for one dollar, the stadium was full, and I can remember people then were allowed to bring in their own bottles of liquor. I almost got hit by a man waving a bottle of Cutty Sark. One of the advantages of those old days, those old 1960-1972 days, was that stadiums and sporting arenas were not places built to make millions upon millions of dollars. They were the dens where sports

The 3rd Annual Holiday Toy Drive & Industry Mixer On Saturday, November 9th, The Original Cupcakery & The Heads With Hearts Presents: The 3rd Annual Holiday Toy Drive & Industry Mixer, benefitting both Vogel Alcove and Kidscapes Foundation. Now in its third year, the event has moved to an exciting new home at the Dallas Holocaust Museum Center for Education and Tolerance, located in Downtown Dallas at 211 N Record St #100, Dallas, TX 75201. The Dallas Holocaust Museum is dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust, and teaching a moral and ethical response to prejudice, hatred and indiﬀerence, for the benefit of all humanity. Because of their mission, this venue serves as a new and outstanding backdrop for a benefit providing much needed donations to two Dallas-based organizations that specifically aid children. Guests will mix and mingle in the event space with professionals and enthusiasts from the beauty and fashion industry, including the artist who established The Heads with Hearts, Dallas photographer Steven D. Hill. Admission for the event is simply a new, unwrapped toy or board game for children between the ages of 1-16; one per guest for entry, though additional items brought by especially generous guests is certainly welcome and would be of great value. SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING When you begin to examine God’s faithfulness, if you look closely, you’ll find there are too many references in the bible to quote on this subject. I was trying to figure out a way to reference this in writing and found my spirit being moved by a quote I’ve used often. It’s not mine so let me declare that now. “God is not schizophrenic.” Life tends to bring that uniquely human characteristic out of us, but God is consistent in His unwavering faithfulness to us. He actually keeps His promises and believe it or not, in His unpredictability, He is predictable. To put it candidly, He loves us no matter what. That means you. No matter how hard we try to deny this, no matter how unworthy we believe ourselves to be, we cannot deny or change this truth because the truth never changes. Warts, flaws and faults, God loves you. The problem we have with God’s consistency is our own inconsistency. When you come to grips with that and put it alongside God’s steadfastness, our fickleness screams at us with a bizarre kind of laughter. I mean really. Our behavior might and often does become sinfully shaky, but our faith should not. Then in the context of our faith, God’s promise within His covenant with us should indeed flourish. So when you become erratic in your walk, your peace of mind, your order, your return to spiritual balance should come from your belief in God’s faithfulness and His unconditional love for you. People, we’re not dealing with trick questions, sleight of hand or spiritual illusions when it comes to the promise of eternal life and everlasting salvation in the kingdom. With mustard seed faith, PAGE 10

comes the understanding that God is not schizophrenic. Someone once told me that in life, there should be things and people you can count on. The point was being made as we referenced the many things in life that you can’t count on; those things and people who will let you down. Friends will let you down. Family will let you down. You might think your fate is inconclusive, going nowhere and we all know fame is fleeting. Yet and still, God is. Being a Christian does not exempt anyone from the challenges of daily life. They can be severe. Tests and testimony are real. Yet and still, God is. He does however, demand and require the discipline of faith. Unfaithfulness, schizophrenia, relapse, back sliding is what gets all of us into trouble. Faith is what gets us out. Why? Because God is good all the time; always was always will be. He is not lost. He is not moved. As a matter of fact, He is at the same place where you originally found Him. Through all your messes, look there and you will find Him again and again. My bible says faith proves itself by obedience. The more we accept this, the clearer our messes become. It becomes obvious as to how we got into them and how we can get out. When all is said and done, what more do you need? Once you understand where home is and that it will always be there, you are never lost, no matter what or who you encounter. It’s the kind of knowledge that never leaves you wanting. “Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; He will not fail you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31: 6. May God bless and keep you always.

Walter “Ted” Shaw has been named Dallas Business Journal’s CFO of the Year for health care. Shaw, who has served as Parkland Health & Hospital System’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Oﬃcer since July 2012, received the honor Oct. 24. Shaw was honored for his work at Parkland which includes responsibilities beyond finance. He serves as Parkland’s representative as anchor for Region 9 under the Texas Medicaid 1115 Waiver, which involves all large health care provider systems in Dallas, Denton and Kaufman counties. The program has the potential to bring more than $1 billion in health care funding to North Texas through innovation and transformation projects that involve all hospitals in the area.

In addition, Shaw oversees the construction of the largest health care project in the nation, the new Parkland Hospital. Marvin Gaye's children respond to lawsuit filed by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and Clifford Harris, Jr. NEW YORK- The children of the late Marvin Gaye has responded in US District Court to the lawsuit that was filed against them by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and Cliﬀord Harris, Jr., according to Mark Levinsohn, the NY entertainment attorney who represents Nona and Frankie Gaye in transactional matters. In that initial suit, filed on August 15, 2013, Thicke and his "Blurred Lines" collaborators sued to stop any claims they thought the children of Marvin Gaye may or would have against their intentional

The "Blurred Lines" trio rushed to file their case soon after their song began attracting overwhelming attention from critics and fans about the substantial similarities that surpass the realm of coincidence to "Got to Give it Up." On August 8, 2013 Rob Hoerburger in the New York Times wrote "But what I keep coming back to is the song's choice DNA...And that bass line came right from Marvin Gaye's No. 1 hit from the summer of '77, 'Got to Give It Up'." In the August 23, 2013 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, Contributor David Ritz wrote, "When I first heard Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines,' my reaction was the same as millions of other R&B fans: Hey, that's Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up." Thicke and company not only copped Gaye's distinct bass line, but the defining funk of the cowbell accents. I wasn't entirely surprised, since some years earlier Thicke's 'Love After War' was a virtual lift of Marvin's 'After the Dance' ..." A quick review of the internet reveals these comments are far from alone in this respect. Indeed, the three writers filed their lawsuit against Gaye's children shortly after the numerous "Got to Give it Up" similarities started surfacing and just weeks after all the online chat rooms were abuzz with discussions of the two songs, including fan postings of musical mash-ups that PAGE 13

and then on the third day I told him I wanted to do something kinda like Marvin Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up,' that kind of feel 'cause it's one of my favorite songs of all time. So he started messing with some drums and then he started going 'Hey, hey hey..' and about an hour and a half later we had the whole record finished." However, by September 2013 Thicke back peddled and did a one-eighty, telling TMZ that even though he's a big fan of Marvin Gaye, the Motown legend is not in his head when he writes songs, including "Blurred Lines."

Initially Gaye's children assumed that Thicke and Williams had obtained the proper license from EMI/SONY to use their father's song "Got to Give it Up" when they decided to deliberately recreate the very essence of the song with "Blurred Lines", but they were sadly mistaken. Although representatives for the parties had ongoing discussions about the copying and possibility of a settlement, there was never any monetary oﬀer made by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams or their representatives to the Gaye family for use of the copyright, as erroneously reported by Billboard Magazine in August 2013. Instead,

Thicke decided to wage a very contradictory public denial about his creative intentions and file a preemptive strike against any claims by the family. On July 9, 2013 he told Billboard Magazine, "Pharrell and I were in the studio making a couple records,

The initial lawsuit filed by the Blurred Lines writers not only asks that any copyright infringement claims be rejected, but also challenges the family to prove that they (and not their publisher) have the right to sue. According to the Gaye children, "EMI/ SONY publishes and administers our father's catalog so contractually, it would be for them to file the countersuit. However, when we requested that they take action, they refused. They also refused to assign to us the right to file for ourselves." It is because of this and other factors outlined in the countersuit that the family is reluctantly suing EMI/SONY for breach of contract and failing to perform their fiduciary duties. Coincidently EMI/ SONY also represents Pharrell Williams. "We have put a lot of eﬀort into this matter, investigated it thoroughly, and believe we have a strong case," says Richard S. Busch of Nashville and San Diego-based King & Ballow, who is litigation counsel for the Gaye children. He adds, "The counterclaim and court filing speak for themselves, and I look forward to presenting this case to the court and ultimately to a jury who will be able to listen to the songs themselves."

One wonders, then, with so many black leaders, why are there so many blacks dying in the streets? "Leadership and politicians have done a disservice to our communities,” says Demery. "Simply put, our so-called leaders are not leading. It's a fact that

Worse yet, many leaders (both black and white) in our police departments and government choose not to speak up for fear of repercussion. The question we need to ask is what are we doing to change these statistics today?” A decorated veteran of the United States Navy, Detective Rodney Demery has served the public as an oﬃcer of the peace for 25 years. Demery, who served in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Desert Shield, attended Louisiana State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
