I just love the teachers who love teaching. Unfortunately today we have more and more people entering the halls of the school to teach and not because they have a love of teaching and for children but to garner a paycheck. There’s a level of stability or job security, some think. We’ll always need teachers right? We need teachers who are committed to teaching. It is inspiring and exciting to hear Dr. Steve Perry talk about what is right and wrong with our school system. Actor, comedian, author Steve Harvey calls Dr. Perry the “hardest working man in the education biz.” Parents want their children to go to his school. Good teachers want to work for him. During the interview process, Dr. Perry even asks prospective applicants Cheryl Smith what they do in their spare time and how do they feel when 20% of their class fails. The answers, to those and other questions, help Dr. Perry discern if the teacher will be a good fit for Capital Prep. For him, as should be the case for anyone who wears the wonderful title of “teacher, educator or professor,” excuses are not acceptable. He respects good teachers and has zero tolerance for bad ones. We need to support our teachers more and we definitely need to pay them more. During an interview, Dr. Perry talked about former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders. He said that Mr. Sanders is interested in ensuring that students have appositive learning experience and that they are prepared for life and to be productive members of society. There’s still time to apply to attend Prime Academy. Recently there was a packed house to hear more about the curriculum and what parents and students could expect from Prime Academy. With schools opening in Dallas and Fort Worth, it will be interesting to see what happens when the doors open this fall. Then there’s the Barack Obama Academy. Just the name probably makes the expectations more demanding. Well, guess what? Maybe, just maybe if we did a better job of sharing information about the heroic and valiant men and women whose names grace the schools across this country, the students and teachers would perform at a higher standard. One friend told me that I would be amazed at the positive environment at the school named after our 44th President. I was reminded of my conversations with Dr. Perry and I get excited. Let’s be honest. We do have some issues in the classroom. There are plenty of excellent teachers and there are also plenty of teachers that don’t belong in the classroom. Recently, I talked with a teacher and she expressed frustration over the lack of interest from one of her students. She said, “I am just going to focus on the students who want to learn!” In my head, I was talking to myself and saying, “Cheryl don’t go and try to get this woman fired.” To say I was disappointed with her rant would be an understatement. I also felt that educators like the late Atty. Williams and Dr. Thelma T. Gorham would have cringed hearing the disdain for students expressed by the teacher. On FaceBook, my “bestest” friend’s daughter made a comment about her students. She wrote: “As long as they're willing to come in and learn, I'm willing to stay here and teach.” I didn’t “like” the comment at all. I actually responded with the question, “What about when they aren't willing?” My niece made me proud, by answering: “U put the teacher-mom on them and force them to come anyway.” GO Tamra! And a big cheer for all the educators who don’t give up on our children. If you are an educator and you don’t look forward to Mondays, guess what, again? You need an adjustment, a career change, or a reality check Sure there are challenges. It seems as though teachers have to spend more time disciplining and managing than teaching. I’m sure that is frustrating. It’s especially frustrating when you don’t know what you are doing or you are in a position out of necessity instead of out of a desire or passion. As this school year rapidly comes to an end, there are parents deciding what school their children will attend in the Fall. For a myriad of reasons, some parents are looking for a change. Some are considering homeschooling as an option. I would suggest that educators, at all levels, take some time to evaluate their lives and their impact in the classroom. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you are “burned out” or “ill-equipped.” Or, you might be tired of lax parents who don’t feel as though they should be active participants in educating their children. Then too, you may take issue with the low pay. I think we can all agree that educators should be paid more and schools need more resources. For whatever reason, something is definitely wrong in our schools and collectively we have to fix things NOW!

SOMETHING TO THINK

A shadow cast By Aaron Hopkins

I watched and listened closely with the rest of the nation as the news about the charges that George Zimmerman would be facing after the investigation headed by the special prosecuting attorney Angela Corey. A couple of disturbing issues arose in my mind as I listened to the statements of Ms. Corey at her press conference. She mentioned, “There is a reason that cases are tried in a court of law not in the court of the public and not by the media.” This case could not be tried based on pressure from the public or by the media because there was not an arrest until 45 plus days after young Trayvon was assassinated.

Aaron Hopkins

Now this is where the hypocrisy of the whole process starts for me. An entire police department had access to all of the evidence that this special prosecutor had. It was a calculated move by the Sanford police to not arrest Mr. Zimmerman after they stated that Mr. Zimmerman was a man with a clean record and they had no reason at the time to seek an arrest and also citing the “Stand your Ground” law. It was later found out that the same Mr. Zimmerman had multiple offenses of the law on his record. To say that this case should not be tried by the public’s opinion is hypocritical because it shows even more that when the shoe has been on the other foot the public’s outcry prevailed! Remember that the great public outcry that came after the O.J Simpson trial led to the father of Nicole Brown Simpson filing a civil suit that made O.J responsible for the death of Nicole Brown Simpson even after he was found not guilty in a criminal court of law. I could point out several instances where the exact opposite of what prosecutor Angela Corey mentioned was how cases were tried and people were put in prison with much less evidence than what’s present in this case. This boils down to an assessed value of people’s lives in this country. If you are young, gifted and black wearing; clothing that places you on a profile, a person can stand their ground using deadly force against you! The arrest and charging of George Zimmerman is not something for the public to rejoice about! That is for his parents. But for those of us who have been down this road before we understand the battle has just begun!

Should I take the credit for the jobs act? By Eric O. January CPA, CEO of Conduit Funding, Inc, Author of the Mo'Sense book series

The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act) that President Obama signed last Thursday is to quote the president, "a game changer." Thank you, Mr. President. It has a number of provisions that will not only allow small businesses to raise much needed equity for the first time by going public but also will go a long way to finally leveling the playing field for non-accredited investors. In a nut shell, a non-accredited investor is a person or organization that does not have a million dollar net-worth or make hundreds of thousands of dollars. The 99% in other words. Finally allowing non-accredited investors the opportunity to do what the rich have always been able to do directly fund the next best thing since sliced bread--can be a game changer. Although the JOBS Act is not perfect, I would like to take credit for, if nothing else, planting or watering the seed in the president's head. It occurred after he had secured the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2008. He was getting his hair cut at the same barber shop in Hyde Park that I also patronized. I happened to have my office in the same building as well. When I came outside to meet a small business client, I noticed black, Secret Service SUVs around the building and thought, "Obama must be getting his

hair cut." I peeked in the shop, and sure enough he was. Since I wanted to promote my books, you know what I did. I ran and got the copies of the books that I had written, burst in the barber shop, smiling and with a loud voice exclaimed, "Barack Obama!" He looked up, so did the barber and a few others in the shop, as I proceeded to give the democratic nominee for the office of the president my books and tell him, "You're going to need to implement what is in these books to get the economy moving in the right direction." A couple of days later, his barber emphatically let me know that wasn't protocol, "Don't you know this man is liable to be the next president of the United States?" I did. And that's exactly why I did what I had to do as an entrepreneur. I seized the moment. Honestly, I don't know if the president read the books. What I do know for certain is that when he left the barber shop, he had more than a fresh hair cut. In my three or so minute briefing/infomercial, he got my fresh economic ideas and two books. Although the books talk about the unequal and thus unjust distinction securities laws create between accredited and non-accredited investors and also the unjust regulatory burden placed on entrepreneurs to register investments with the SEC, the primary subjects of the series are how to value investments, manage risk and play a role with money. It also mentions how regulatory discrimination contributes to the everincreasing wealth divide and hampers

economic development and how financial crises will reoccur without systemic change. He only had to read the first two pages of chapter one in Book II (No license needed, just drive) and a few pages in chapter three of Book I (The masses have been illegally classed) to learn or be reminded of how detrimental and unjust the legislation was. Maybe when the crowdfunders promoted what could have been titled the Conduit Funding Jobs Act mentioned allowing unlimited participation of non-accredited investors, it resonated with the president. "I've read this before," he may have thought. "That's what January suggested in his Mo'Sense books." Eliminating the regulatory discrimination is just one thing that I identify as being needed. We don't need to regulate more and continue to unjustly lock out the public from potentially lucrative investments to prevent defrauding as many opponents of the JOBS Act argue. The most important thing that the public needs is a new way of thinking about what role they play with their money, how to value investments and how to manage risk properly as my books teach. Eric O. January is an ordained minister, author, educator and entrepreneur. He has over 15 years of hands-on, independent, financial advisory, consulting and certified public accounting experience. Eric has been a featured guest and economic commentator on numerous radio and television stations. He is the author of the breakthrough, three-part book series titled, "Mo'Sense:(TM) Money & Economic Sense Based on the Natural Laws of Momentum". ELECTION 2012 OCCUPY THE VOTE To Educate, Employ & Empower: A National Call

Marc Morial and Dr. Beverly Mitchell Brooks

The Urban League of Greater Dallas joins the National Urban League (NUL) and its affiliates throughout the U.S.in supporting the single issue that will have the greatest impact on the future of Black America in 2012, the vote. “It is no coincidence that a nationwide rollback in voting rights for American’s most vulnerable citizens is happening just as elected officials mount unprecedented campaign to slash investments in education and economic development,” said NUL President and CEO Marc H. Morial. “Keeping the nation on a path to economic recovery and equality requires the full participation of every citizen.” According to the National Urban League’s newly released State of Black America Report, “as the nation struggles toward a financial recovery, public investments in education, job training and job growth are more vital than ever. Yet those very investments are targeted for sacrifice in favor of diverting more and more of the nation’s resources to those at the very top of the economic pyramid. “At the same time, a coordinated effort is underway to exclude from the political proves the very citizens whose futures hang in the balance.” In order to implement the charge by the National Urban League to Occupy the Vote to Educate, Employ and Empower the following list of practical and actionable ideas are recommended: --Fair and Equitable School Funding for All --Robust Early Childhood Education for Each Child --Strengthen High Schools and Re-engage Students to Prevent Dropouts --Robust STEM Focused Curriculum and Programs --Qualified, Effective and Diverse Teachers --Strategic Workforce Development: Targeting Americans Most in Need --New Job Training Models Coupled with Job Placement --Improving and Integrating Current Data Systems “This National Urban League initiative urges a public call for immediate national action around education and job-training in order to achieve the ultimate goal to put America Back to Work,” said Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, President & CEO Urban League of Greater Dallas. “And any discussions surrounding the creation of jobs and economic opportunities PAGE 4

Conference reinforces positive self-worth, a key element in love connections By Donald Lee I Messenger

With the divorce rate --- roughly 50 percent of marriages in the United States --- continuing to threaten the family unit, we must do everything we can to reverse the abysmal pattern many homes are falling into. The best way to combat this epidemic is to lay down the foundation for a wholesome home by sharing the biblically based, yet practical, principles that lead to changed attitudes toward self and relationships. And it is for this reason that I am teaming up with a fellow Christian author, Dr. Aimee (pronounced I-may) Colbert, to host the Christian Couples Conference in the north Fort Worth suburb of Haltom City on July 7. "The purpose of the conference is to help each individual, married or not, to increase his or her emotional intelligence and self-awareness," says Colbert, an evangelist, faith-based counselor and author of the upcoming book "Reality Check: Relationships". "I hope that attendees come to a better understanding of themselves, get answers and go forward with a passion to change and a new perspective on love." The conference will be at Grace Church, 4740 Western Center Blvd., in Haltom City. There'll be two sessions, one from 11

a.m. to 2 p.m., and the other from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 7, which will be on a Saturday. "It's not only for couples. It's for couples and anyone Pastor Donald Lee seeking to be married some day, and it's free," Colbert says of the conference. The idea is to reinforce the need for individuals to understand themselves, to have a healthy appreciation of Dr. Aimee Colbert their own selfworth and discern whether someone else has the wholesome spirit that is needed to best complement them. Strong relationships are built on wisdom and humility. And they thrive when those

entering into them have genuine, sincere hearts rooted in the spirit of giving. When someone approaches a relationship with the mindset of seeing what they can add to that relationship to help make the other person's life easier, better, that produces a powerful connection, one that reflects the attributes of God. But when someone enters into relationships with a "gimme" attitude, always seeking to make withdrawals from the other person's heart and rarely (if ever) making deposits, then that not only strains the relationship, but it gradually tears

A person can't be sufficiently good to someone else if he (or she) has a negative view of himself (or herself). down the other person. So, we want to stress that people have a healthy attitude toward themselves. A person can't be sufficiently good to someone else if he (or she) has a negative view of himself (or herself). Topics Colbert and I will cover at the conference include: “Twenty Questions You Must Ask Your Mate Before You Get Married”; “Twenty Signs That He/She is Not the One”; “ A r e Yo u A d d i c t e d t o B a d Relationships?”; and “Evaluating Your

25 years of service, commitment and excellence

WILLIAMS CHICKEN By Cheryl Smith I Messenger

Humble, respectful and soft-spoken are all words used to describe Mr. Hiawatha Williams. Folks who know him could also add a number of other descriptions to this successful entrepreneur who is also known for his business prowess, quick mind and commitment to excellence. Often called on as a speaker, Mr. Williams imparts a message that is spiritually-based and succinctly articulated. His message is focused and clearly his small-town upbringing and sense of family are evident, as is his value system which is uncompromised. In 1987, Mr.Williams opened his first Williams Chicken Drive-Thru Eatery in Dallas, Texas. Today, there are almost 40 Williams Chicken stores in operations. The majority of the Williams Chicken stores are located in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. However, store locations included South, East and West Texas, and also spread into Northern Louisiana. In the early 1990s, Carol Brandon and Dapheny Fain took my six-year-old nephew to purchase bunk beds for his room. After their shopping spree, they took him to eat. Both Carol and Dapheny knew that I was a strong advocate of supporting Black businesses so they told Andre they were taking him to Williams Chicken. He was not pleased at all at the thought but as was the case with Andre, he did what he was told. However, he did tell the two young ladies that he didn’t “know no Mr. Williams” but he knew McDonalds!” They got a kick out of his response but their minds were made up, so it was off to Williams they went. When they returned him home Carol couldn’t stop laughing about Andre and his efforts to get to McDonalds. Well, over the years he learned quite a bit about Williams Chicken and the owner; as well as numerous other Black entrepreneurs like Mr. Williams. While he is in the Air Force today, Andre also has hopes of owning a business, too. A recipient of the inaugural Texas Rangers Jackie Robinson Community Achievement Award, Mr. Williams is one of 16 children born in Smithville, Texas. He attended segregated schools until high school and was the first member of his family to attend and graduate from college. In 1974, Mr. Williams became the first African-American Area Manager in the Southwest Region for Church's Fried Chicken. He opened his first store in Dallas, Texas with five employees on April 27, 1987. Today he has over 700 employees and he has provided employment for hundreds of high school and college students. Mr. Williams has an honorable philosophy, "dedicated to serve, grow, and give back to the community." A strong believer in education, Mr. Williams adopted three Dallas elementary schools and served as Vice President to the Elisha M. Pease Elementary School Advisory Committee. He is a 1972 graduate and Board of Trustees member of Dallas-based Paul Quinn College, his alma mater. Mr. Williams is also a recipient of the Dallas Metroplex Council of Black Alumni Associations Alumnus of the Year, an honor he shares with other notables like: former Dallas Police Chief and Jackson State alum Terrell Bolton, Radio and Television personality and Tuskegee alum Tom Joyner, President of CERP Food Inc and Hampton alum Curtis Ranson, CEO of Stephens Automotive Group and Southern alum David Stephens and Mavericks Head Coach and Southern alum Avery Johnson. Paul Quinn College created the Hiawatha Williams Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership on campus in his honor in 2007. Mr. Williams serves as a board member of the Capella Realty Company, Vice Chairman of the United States Christian Chamber of Commerce, the Potter's House School of King, and numerous corporate boards. He is a recipient of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce’s 1992 "Quest for Success" Award and the Dallas Black Chamber's 2007 Small Business of the Year Award. He and his wife Doris are parents of two sons and reside in DeSoto. PAGE 10

APRIL 13, 2012

Mr. Williams made a noble gesture when he launched the Williams Supermarket. Folks were excited and you thought that this long-awaited venture would be the springboard for a chain of like supermarkets cropping up first around Dallas and then across the country. The place was beautifully decorated, clean and immaculate. The items on the shelves were fresh and the prices were competitive. It seemed like only yesterday that I walked up and down the clean aisles of the grocery store, feeling proud as I told my little ones, Annya and Ayanna, that a Black man owned the store. For years, I have heard the mumbling and grumbling. “We don’t own anything in our communities,” was the gripe from many. And then there were those who would talk about the “good ole days” when Black people owned, banks, stores, dry cleaning establishments and other successful businesses. Sadly today, people who look like us do not own many of the thriving businesses in our community. So, what does this mean? It’s simple; the money made off the community leaves with the resourceful businessmen and women who benefit from the always-ready and anxious African American consumer. And that brings me full circle to Hiawatha Williams. Many of you stop by his Williams Chicken Restaurants to pick up your two pieces with a pepper, gizzards, scrumptious corn fritters, and at some locations, fish. The money Mr. Williams makes from his business endeavors continues to make a difference, as the dollars are recycled in African American communities across the great state of Texas and Louisiana. While I could provide a long list of groups, schools and organizations who have witnessed Mr. Williams’ generosity, one beneficiary is Paul Quinn College. Unlike so many Black college alums, Mr. Williams is very supportive of Dallas’ only HBCU. Williams Chicken helps send students to Paul Quinn and Mr. Williams is proud to extend his commitment to being a good corporate citizen to his alma mater. Unfortunately the celebration of Williams Supermarket was short-lived. Although the service was impeccable and the products reasonably priced and professionally represented, in less than a year, the store was closed. Once again, something good for “the community,” ceased to exist. We can celebrate, however, that Williams Chicken--after 25 years-- is still thriving.

I Messenger says Thanks to Mr. Hiawatha Williams and Williams Chicken. PAGE 11

TV One introduces new relationship series, Love Addiction Silver Spring, MD – Beginning Wednesday, April 25 from 8-9 PM, TV One will premiere Love Addiction, a new eight-episode, emotion-filled documentary series where therapists and relationship experts help women and men extricate themselves from destructive relationships with the help of the people who love them most. With the guidance of three top relationship experts, family members and friends come together to try and help loved ones who are immersed in toxic relationships rediscover themselves and their lives in this powerful, transformational intervention series. Men and women no matter how smart, beautiful or worldly, can find themselves in relationships that are demoralizing and soul shattering. For some women, it’s players; for others, it’s control freaks or countless variations of emotional abusers. Men can be addicted to bad love, too, including those who date ice princesses and gold diggers. In each of these cases, friends and family can be cut off if they say something critical; or be forced to watch silently while someone they love goes through hell. Under the premise of doing a documentary on relationships, the couples’ relationship patterns are captured on camera. Once the loved one’s destructive situation is established, family and friends gather with one of three relationship experts for an intervention. Through this intervention, by the people who love them the most, these love addicts have the opportunity to rediscover themselves, gain self-esteem, and be enlightened as to the type of love they really do deserve. Ultimately, the love addict will have to choose: to remain in the relationship and risk support of their loved ones or to leave the love-gone-wrong for a life so right. Will the loved one break it off and chart a new path? Can they stay away from the toxic relationship? The series shares their decision and then checks back several weeks later to see if they’ve freed themselves or fallen back into the negative relationship. Therapists and relationship experts help the love addicted and their families deal with these crises, including psychologist Dr. Alduan Tartt, parenting, teen and relationship expert and author of The RING FORMULA: How To Be The Only One He Ever Needs; personal growth and relationship expert Hasani PAGE 13

Pettiford, author of Black Thighs, Black Guys & Bedroom Lies; and Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, psychologist, Pepperdine University assistant professor, author of several critically acclaimed books, including Thriving in the Wake of Trauma: A Multicultural Guide and Past-President of the Society for the Psychology of Women. “We all know friends or family members who almost serially seem to end up in bad relationships, or who fall under the toxic spell of a bad romance, and we wish we could help them realize how much better they deserve to be treated,” said TV One President and CEO Wonya Lucas. “This series is not only riveting and full of emotion, it also should provide some great advice for those with troubled relationships and even those who want to keep their relationships healthy.” In the April 25 premiere episode, viewers meet 29-yearold Marcus Foy, whose mother Adrienne Nixon has always encouraged him to follow his heart. But once Marcus begins dating 51-year-old Suzi (a woman older than Adrienne), Adrienne is beside herself.

She believes Suzi is too old for Marcus, is way past her prime, and can’t give her grandbabies; Adrienne is also concerned over Suzi’s continual pill-popping of painkillers. Marcus loves his mother, but wants her to butt out of his life. He’s happy. He wants to marry Suzi… and once her divorce is final he plans on making Suzi his wife. Suzi, a former Las Vegas showgirl, says she’s been living her life for everyone else… and now it’s her turn to be happy. She is currently separated from her husband and says the divorce will be final any day now. However Marcus lives with Suzi in a house that her husband, Tony still financially maintains. Between Suzi’s doctor visits, and dinner parties with friends, the couple constantly bickers. Adrienne and Marcus’ best friend, Jacob, believe if they don’t stage a love intervention before the couple marries, they will lose Marcus forever.

DCCCD presents author Judy Blume at DMA Whether she’s exploring fantastic stories, siblings or censorship, noted author Judy Blume has tackled tales that have touched the hearts of countless children, teenspand adults. One of her most beloved books, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, was named to the School Library Journal’s list of “One Hundred Books that Shaped the Century.” Blume’s books about pre-teen Peter Hatcher and his troublesome younger brother, Farley – known to avid readers as Fudge – begins with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Blume’s fans, young and old alike, will have a chance to meet her and hear more about her life and work during a program presented by the Dallas County Community College District on Thurs., April 19, as part of the Arts and Letters Live series sponsored by the Dallas Museum of Art; DCCCD is a community partner for the spring 2012 Arts and Letters Live season. Tickets for the event are $10 for students (including those who attend DCCCD), $16 for adults and $14 reduced (DMA members, educators, librarians and seniors age 65 and older). The program will begin at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, located at 1923 Ross Ave. in Dallas. Tickets can be purchased through the Dallas Museum of Art at www.tickets.DallasMuseumofArt.org. The featured writer has penned more than 25 books and has earned more than 90 awards since she began her career many years ago, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Library of Congress Living Legends Award and the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Blume spent her childhood in Elizabeth, N.J., making up stories inside her head, she says on her web site. She has spent her adult years in many places, doing the same thing – but now she writes her stories down on paper. Adults and children alike will recognize other titles she has written, too, including: Blubber; Just As Long As We’re Together; Deenie; Freckle Juice; Forever; and many others. She also has written three books for adults, all of them New York Times bestsellers: Summer Sisters; Smart Women; and Wifey. More than 80 million copies of her books have been sold, and her work has been translated into 31 different languages.

Kids Fund, a charitable and educational foundation. She serves on the boards of the Author’s Guild; the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators; the Key West Literary Seminar; and the National Coalition Against Censorship. A long-time advocate of intellectual freedom, Blume found herself at the center of an organized book-banning campaign in the 1980s. She began to reach out to other writers, teachers and librarians who also were under fire; since then, she has worked tirelessly to protect the freedom to read. She says, “Let children read whatever they want then talk about it with them. If parents and kids can talk together, we won’t have as much censorship because we won’t have as much fear.” Several other Arts and Letters Live programs scheduled at the DMA in April include: -- Sun., April 15, 3 p.m., Horchow Auditorium – Marc Brown – Beloved children’s author-illustrator Marc Brown has enchanted young readers with his heartfelt stories and watercolor illustrations for more than 30 years. He is the creator of Arthur Read, the world’s favorite aardvark – now the star of a series of bestselling books and an Emmy award-winning television series on PBS. During the event, Brown will share his process of creating the illustrations for If All the Animals Came Inside, a picture book written by Eric Pinder that imagines what chaos and fun would happen if all of the animals at the zoo suddenly became house pets.

Gathering won the 2007 Man Booker Prize. McCann is the internationally bestselling author of two story collections and five novels; he also contributes to the New York Times and the Paris Review. His novel Let the Great World Spin about Philippe Petit’s tightrope walk between the unfinished World Trade Center Towers in 1974 won the 2009 National Book Award for fiction and the 2011 International IMPAC Dublin Award. -- Fri., April 20, 8:15 p.m., Horchow Auditorium – Paula McLain – Author of The Paris Wife, which explores the intoxicating world of Paris in the 1920s, Paula McLain instantly became a New York Times bestselling author and has been a favorite among readers and critics alike. Presented in conjunction with the DMA’s exhibit Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties, McLain will discuss her book and her research. Born in Fresno, Calif., McClain was abandoned early in life and moved in and out of foster homes for 14 years. She also is the author of Like Family:
