Sometimes you need help sharing a message. Gary Bledsoe and Luis Vera are tackling an issue that we all need to be more knowledgeable about. In addition to addressing an important issue, these two strong voices are showing the power of unifying: Texas is changing rapidly. The 2010 Census revealed that we are becoming a more diverse state, with more diverse interests. Last week a three-judge panel released the final set of voting maps in what has been a protracted redistricting debate. The Texas NAACP and LULAC believe that these interim maps violate the Voting Rights Act by ignoring demographic realities and short-changing racial and ethnic minorities. It is time for Texas’ voting maps to reflect the state of Texas today.

The 2010 Census revealed that 10 years of population growth had earned Texas four Cheryl Smith new seats in the United States Congress. 65% of recent growth came from Latinos, and 14% came from African Americans. These two groups now comprise just under half of Texas’s voting age population. Any new map should reflect this minority growth and counterbalance discrimination in the state’s current map, where only 11 out of 32 seats are responsive to minority interests.

Unfortunately, the redistricting process has been overly politicized and anything but fair. Last summer the Texas legislature unveiled a plan that actively diluted minority voting strength. After a lawsuit, a federal panel proposed an interim plan with 13 seats responsive to minority interests. This was less than ideal, but is a compromise we were willing to live with.

However, the State of Texas appealed the panel’s decision, and the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it. This week, the panel released a compromise plan that hews far too closely to the legislature’s original offer. The so-called “compromise" creates a net gain of zero Latino districts, fractures black neighborhoods, and strands thousands of black voters in White-dominated districts. Districts 23 and 27 have been lost, possibly forever. The plan does create a new Latino district in Dallas Fort-Worth, but it comes at the detriment of all other Latinos and African Americans in Texas.

In fact, because of Texas’ four new seats in Congress, this plan actually decreases the percentage of minority opportunity districts from 34.4% to 30.5%. With majority voters controlling at least 25 of 36 Congressional seats, the plan designates 70% of the total seats for less than 40% of the population – hardly a course correction.

Last week the NAACP and LULAC joined other groups in challenging this plan in a Washington, DC federal court. We believe that these maps violate Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act as well as the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th amendment, by reducing minority voting strength and intentionally discriminating against racial and ethnic minority voters.

Fortunately, we believe there is a fair solution. In many parts of Texas, African Americans and Latinos frequently live close to each other and have been shown to have similar experiences and engage in political cooperation. In our filing to the DC court this week, we cited the 5th Circuit precedent that minority groups may be considered together in the creation of coalition districts, as long as evidence establishes that those communities have similar interests and generally work together to elect the candidate of their choice.

Putting this precedent into practice, we believe that three additional minority coalition seats could be drawn in Dallas, Harris and Tarrant Counties, based on the cooperative behavior of the African American and Latino communities based there. This would be in addition to the six Latino districts in South and West Texas, the Latino opportunity district now in Harris County, the coalition opportunity district in Travis County and the three current African-American opportunity districts. That adds up to at least 14 Congressional Districts responsive to the interests of minorities.

As the state redraws its political boundaries, the NAACP and LULAC are working to protect the interests of those voters who need protection the most. Given the recent demographic shifts in Texas, we believe that the 11 minority opportunity districts currently offered in the compromise plan are simply not sufficient. We hope that the DC court will recognize the injustice inherent in this plan.

ARLINGTON – Former Congressman Martin Frost has endorsed Chris Turner for state representative in the upcoming Democratic primary.

Frost served District 101 in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 2005.

Veasey stands with North Texas working families (Fort Worth) – The Veasey for Congress (TX-33) campaign Marc Veasey concluded a press conference in which Representative Marc Veasey was joined by former Congressman Martin Frost and large group of union workers to address an opponents’ disparaging comments about General Motors.

As reported in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Domingo Garcia said at a recent candidate forum, “I don’t have any confidence in General Motors.” He then went on to say that the vehicles built at the GM plant Arlington are “not good for America.”

About 15 years ago, the GM Plant in Arlington nearly closed. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Governor Ann Richards, Congressman Marc Veasey and the local labor leadership, the plant was kept open and is now, just a couple of years after the President kept GM from going bankrupt, the plant is as healthy as it has been in years.

In addition to his comments about GM, Garcia also disparaged two of North Texas’ largest employers – Lockheed Martin and American Airlines. When asked if he supported the F-35 fighter built by Lockheed Martin, the 6th largest employer in North Texas, Garcia answered, “no.” Garcia referred to American Airlines, the largest employer in North Texas, as “reprehensible” in the context of their bankruptcy leaving thousands of jobs of risk.

“Anyone who, like me, grew up in Fort Worth, knows how important major manufacturing and union jobs are at GM, at American Airlines and at Lockheed,” said Rep. Veasey. “I know one of my most important jobs in Congress will be to stand with you and work with you to protect the jobs in our area and to protect your rights as American workers.”

Veasey campaign closes strong fundraising period The congressional campaign of State Representative Marc Veasey (TX-33) today reported raising $126,504.39 for the period with $104,983.20 cash on hand. This brings the Veasey campaign’s total amount raised for the cycle to $300,412.30. In the previous fundraising period Rep. Veasey out-raised all opponents and had more individual donors. Following the close of that period, <r. Veasey gained the endorsements of both the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Asleep with your eyes open Am I the only one who has wondered about the actions of some people where it appears like the person is sleepwalking?

There are times when I pick up a newspaper or turn on a news report and hear some of the most shocking stories of people doing things to other people who are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It appears that we have little or no conscience at all.

Elderly men and women are disregarded and being made to feel useless, irrelevant or just too much trouble. What are we becoming? Or who are we becoming?

I feel sometimes that it’s too much to ask a person just to act cordial towards others and not be so selfish.

If it seems as if I’m venting that would be correct. I hate the fact that any young adult or child in our community can recite word for word some of the most vulgar socalled rap songs but can’t tell you how many letters are in the alphabet.

In the world we live in today, time is something we take for granted but always want more of. Why should we be given more time to play around with our lives and not work to change ourselves for the better?

Many believe in what is called “Divine Judgment” and many others do not believe in this concept. I will only point out some seemingly obvious things that are taking place in front of our faces.

The upcoming presidential election is very important to the future of this country, but it is even more important for the people who live in this country to begin taking life much more seriously.

If President Obama is re-elected he can only do the business of running the country for those who actually run this country, the rich!

We, who are not rich, can become rich and control our destiny if we would only unite with the folks who are walking around asleep with their eyes open waiting for someone to snap their fingers and say, “Awake you mighty nation, you can accomplish what you will!”

While there are a range of theological views about same sex marriage, all Americans can stand united under the banner of extending civil liberties and justice to all citizens.

People of faith will not allow their theological diversity on this or other issues to be exploited for political gain.

The welfare of our nation rests upon growing our economy, preserving the social safety nets for the poor and the elderly, and creating a civil society of mutuality, tolerance, and respect.

LDF successfully defends heart of the Voting Rights Act NEW YORK, For the second time in the past year, a federal court in Washington, D.C. upheld the constitutionality of the heart of the 2006 reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. The case, Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, involved a challenge to the Section 5 "preclearance" provision of the Voting Rights Act, which requires states and jurisdictions with some of the worst histories of voting discrimination, such as Alabama, to have all voting changes reviewed by the U.S. Department of Justice or D.C. District Court to ensure they are free from discrimination.

In rejecting this challenge, Judge Tatel, writing for the majority, ruled that Congress appropriately extended the protections of the preclearance requirement in 2006 for 25 more years: "After thoroughly scrutinizing the record and given that overt racial discrimination persists in covered jurisdictions notwithstanding decades of section 5 preclearance, we, like the district court, are satisfied that

Congress's judgment deserves judicial deference."

"Today's ruling is the latest in an unbroken line of cases upholding the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act's most effective protection," said Debo P. Adegbile, LDF Interim President and Director-Counsel. "Some have questioned whether the protection is still needed. The recent efforts to suppress minority voters make it crystal clear that we still need this core voter protection. Section 5 promotes political inclusion against persisting attempts to practice exclusion."

In the face of substantial evidence showing continued efforts to discriminate against minority voters, Section 5 was reauthorized by a bipartisan majority of Congress in 2006.

More recently, in a 2009 case argued by LDF, Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District No. 1 v. Holder, the Supreme Court issued an 8-to-1 ruling that left Section 5's important protections intact.

behalf of several African American community leaders and voters in Shelby County, including Councilman Ernest Montgomery. In 2006, the City of Calera, which lies within Shelby County, enacted a discriminatory redistricting plan without complying with Section 5, leading to the loss of the city's sole African-American councilman, Ernest Montgomery.

Because of Section 5, however, Calera was required to draw a nondiscriminatory redistricting plan and conduct another election in which Mr. Montgomery regained his seat.

"Section 5's critical role as our democracy's discrimination check point is as vital as ever," said Ryan Haygood, Director of LDF's Political Participation Group. "Right now, even as it is under attack, the Voting Rights Act is preventing discriminatory redistricting schemes like the one at issue in this case, and voting measures strategically launched in advance of the 2012 elections from being implemented.

Since first being introduced, the video has galvanized youth Occupiers and other protestors during rallies in Greensboro, North Carolina and in Atlanta. With over 100,000 private views, the videotune is quickly emerging as the anthem of the Occupy Movement.

Mr. Gregory, who is hailed as "the original Occupier" because of his legacy of protest during the Civil Rights Movement, has been trumpeting the video for its dynamism and its powerful message. "Wril's video highlights the breadth, depth and heart of Occupy Wall Street and other Oh-No movements across the country," said Mr. Gregory.

It was on the strength of his admiration of Mr. Gregory that Wril immersed himself deeper in the protest movement. When he first met Mr. Gregory, he said he developed a deep connection with the legendary comedian-turned-activist. He joined Mr. Gregory in his protest against BP for not providing financial compensation to the poor Gulf residents who were victims of BP's gross negligence -- though BP had earned billions of dollars in profits. Wril was arrested alongside the long-time activist when they staged a protest at British Petroleum's headquarters in Washington, D.C. The goal was to focus attention on the plight of the many lives and businesses that were devastated by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oilrig explosion.

Ammons: Marching '100' Stays Suspended

Florida A&M President James H. Ammons said Monday that the university's famed Marching "100" will stay suspended throughout the 2012-2013 school year following the hazing-turned-homicide that killed drum major Robert Champion in November.

He was talking to the university's board of trustees when he unveiled plans for the band's future after news broke last week that three of the 11 persons allegedly involved in the felony hazing that killed Champion were not students at FAMU. Champion was "pummeled to death" on Nov. 19, 2011, the night of the annual Florida Classic football game in Orlando, according to State Attorney Lamar Lawson in announcing charges against 13 people in Champion's death.

Since then, all 11 of the defendants have surrendered to authorities in Florida, Georgia and Delaware.

The extended suspension comes on the eve of the university's 125th anniversary celebration in October.

The Marching "100" are among the highlights of games during FAMU's football season and homecoming celebrations.

The university had put on hold all ne w memberships for clubs and organizations for the Spring 2012 s e m e s t e r. FA M U h a s n o t y e t announced its plans for membership for the upcoming semester.

Former band director Julian White said last week that bringing the band back would "not be prudent" until reforms happen.

HAIR and SCALP DOCTOR Dr. Amerson stresses importance of healthy living

If you are losing your hair, bothered by an itchy scalp or avoiding wearing dark colors because of the unsightly flakes that appear on your clothing, noted doctor of Trichology Linda Amerson can probably diagnose your problem and prescribe the appropriate remedy.

During a recent visit with aspiring journalists, Dr. Amerson introduced the students to a word they admittedly had never heard of -- alopecia.

One young man was visibly shaken when after viewing his comb, Dr. Amerson confiscated it and told him why he should never use a comb in the condition of the one that she packed away--probably to use as “exhibit A” in another session.

The pictures she showed on the screen, of combs and brushes that damage your hair, were no match for the student’s comb, where the few remaining teeth were bent or broken.

“You should never use combs like this on your hair,” she told the group, as they laughed goodnaturedly at the contraband.

An expert on hair and scalp disorders, Dr. Amerson travels the world lecturing on keeping a healthy scalp, so she’s not dismayed when she runs across audiences that are clueless about alopecia.

Instead, she observes the nodding of heads and increased levels of interest when she explains that alopecia is just a technical word for a condition that is a cause of concern for millions of sufferers daily.

Whether its the first time too much hair appears in your comb or on your pillowcase, or you “suddenly” notice a bald spot on your head, the tell-tale signs of hair loss are all unpleasant.

scalp, once you get past the microscopic analysis and Dr. Amerson’s expert diagnosis.

Getting that all-important analysis, she told students, could help determine what is going on in their bodies.

“Your hair is a barometer of imbalances in your systems and we can find out a lot about what’s going on with you by analyzing your hair,” she said, as she cautioned against not only making sure that the teeth in combs or the bristles in brushes are not too small or damaged, but also making sure your combs and brushes are clean and replaced at intervals.

“Dirty brushes and combs can spread disease and also contribute to hair loss.”

It is important, she noted, that even when you go to the hair salon or barber shop, that you make sure that sanitized equipment is being used and the combs and brushes are in excellent condition.

“To transfer disease all you need is for a person to have an open sore on their scalp and the same unsterilized brush or comb applied to your scalp, and there you have it,” she cautioned.

Then too there are other factors that should be of concern, she pointed out as she stressed the importance of eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water.

Nutrition is important, she said, adding that overconsumption of salt and sugar, as well as spicy foods can contribute to a poor scalp.

Shampooing and conditioning are important, too, but if you aren’t eating properly, you can expect your hair and skin to be impacted significantly, she continued.

The message she shared with students that day is one that she has shared in numerous interviews, columns and speaking appearances.

Her work in the office, around the world and with numerous organizations and non-profits, has gained her notoriety and several awards.

Whether she is working with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Cornerstone Baptist Church or Hurricane Katrina survivors and Rainbow Room for Foster Children, Dr. Amerson is always on the move.

IN MEMORIAM LaDonna Adrian Gaines December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012

LaDonna Adrian Gaines was born on December 31, 1948 in Boston MA to Andrew and Mary Gaines.

The third of seven children. (One boy and six girls), Donna Summer died of cancer in her Florida home on May 17, 2012.

She was married briefly in the early 70s to Helmut Sommer, with whom she had one child - Mimi Sommer.

She later married songwriter Bruce Sudano with whom she has two children, Brooklyn and Amanda Grace Sudano.

Donna is grandmother to Vienna Lynn Adrianna Dohler and Savannah Grace Dohler (Mimi's daughters.)

Over the years Donna has maintained homes in Los Angeles, Connecticut and New York, but she and her family have homes in Tennessee, Florida and New York City In 1968 Donna left home to join the German production of Hair.

In 1974 Donna had her first European hit with The Hostage.

In 1975 Donna had her first American hit with Love To Love You Baby.

Donna has written or co-written a significant number of her hits and album tracks.

Chuck Brown Godfather of GoGo August 22, 1936 - May 16, 2012 “The Godfather of Go Go,” Chuck Brown is the undisputed sole founder and creator Go-Go music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul that he developed in the early 70’s , and the only form of expressive culture to originate in the District of Columbia.

Foreshadowing rap and many of the major popular R&B styles of the past three decades, Chuck's signature style earned him a place in American musical royalty. This esteem was maintained by the reputation of his legendary live shows, heavy on audience participation and built around “the beat” to create an unparalleled non-stop party atmosphere.

While searching for a sound to call his own in the 1960s, Chuck was deeply inspired by artists like James Brown.

He latched onto the Latin percussion groove from the band he played with at the time, Los Latinos. Combining this with his roots, his love of blues, jazz, gospel, soul, and African rhythms, Chuck began to develop his own unique sound. Starting out playing top forty, Brown would break-it-down between songs with percussion and audience call and response, and keep the music going, and the dance floor packed.

His first hit was “We the People” on the debut album of the same name in 1972. Next came the album Salt of the Earth, with the hit “Blow Your Whistle” (sampled by Grammy winner Eve in 2007 in her hit “Tambourine”), and one of the most sampled break beats of ALL time from “Ashley’s Roach Clip” (including Eric B and Rakim, LL Cool J and countless others). In 1978, the Soul Searchers became Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, and Chuck’s original composition “Bustin’ Loose” took the #1 spot in Billboard, on Source/MCA Records. The song was used in Grammy winner Nelly’s 2002 smash “Hot in Herre,” and continues to be one of the most relevant and often sampled funk songs ever written (“Bustin’ Loose” is currently featured in a national television campaign for Chips Ahoy).

After substantial touring across the US, but no money to show for his success, Chuck found himself looking for inspiration. He found it in his next hit, the Billboard charting “We Need Some Money,” which propelled him around the world again. Brown then revisited his love of jazz and created the “Go Go Swing Medley,” introducing people around the world to classics by Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, and James Moody, spun in Chuck’s inimitable way. Released independently and later on Polygram Records, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers once again reached an international audience through a 1985 at Holland’s North Seas Jazz Festival. Brown continued to record, perform in the US, with stints in Europe and Japan in the nineties.

After a string of live recordings, he met at the time an undiscovered, shy talent by the name of Eva Cassidy in the early nineties. His lifelong dream of singing with a lady, springing from his love of duets by the likes of Louis Armstrong with Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstine with Sarah Vaughan, came to fruition with the critically acclaimed and worldwide release of “The Other Side” by Chuck Brown and Eva Cassidy (which contained the original recording of the worldwide Eva Cassidy hit “Over the Rainbow”). He dedicated a jazz standards album to Ms. Cassidy after her tragic loss to cancer.

In 2001, he released the Billboard charting “Your Game... Live at the 9:30 Club” which was voted as one of the top 10 albums of 2001 by Billboard’s R&B Editor, Rapper Chuck D and others. A live DVD came next, called “quite possibly the greatest live concert video/ DVD I have ever seen” by Murder Dog

Magazine. The same year a double remastered “Best Of” album was released. In 2006 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Chuck a “Lifetime Heritage Fellowship,” the Federal Government’s highest honor for folk and traditional arts, and Chuck also performed at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. The following year his “We’re About the Business” CD debuted as the #1 independent album and #2 R&B album in Billboard. The National Visionary Leadership Project recognized Chuck’s contributions in shaping American history in 2007, joining previous honorees such as Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, BB King, and Eartha Kitt.

Most recently Chuck has recorded with artists as diverse as Thievery Corporation, Brian Culbertson and Jeff Majors. A street in Washington DC was recently renamed “Chuck Brown Way.” !

I've been to Europe a million times before, but there was something special about this trip. First, I was touring for my own record, which means a lot to me. But, also there was just a magic in the air and an energy in this packed room that make it one of my favorite shows."

"I'm so voracious with Twitter that every photo I take, I try to tweet out in real time and then have the photos uploaded to my Facebook too," he explains. "I've always been a shutterbug. My dad loved the camera when we were kids and I studied graphic design in school, so I've always loved visual images."

He also recently played Hyde at the Bellagio in Sin City. "I love Las Vegas.

It's probably one of my favorite places to play. The energy is great and people are really there to have a great time," he said. One such person was Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins, who was on hand to take in Mr. Willis' set. He will return to Vegas on July 14 for a performance at The Palms.

Another special show this year was a benefit for a friend, who is battling cancer, during his annual college alumni weekend at Oakwood University on Easter weekend. The fundraising concert, "We Don't Like Cancer, BUT We Love June April," held at the Oakwood University Church in Huntsville, Alabama and broadcast on Praizevision.com, featured performances by Willis and other musical friends, such as opera singer Angela Brown and songwriter John Stoddart.

Report documents climate change threats and absence of planning for communities of color

WASHINGTON, DC – Communities of color in six southern and western states face a “perfect storm” of poor health, socioeconomic barriers and climate-related challenges, and many are being left out of government climate change and disaster planning activities, according to a report released today by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

The report prepared by researchers at the Texas Health Institute, Climate Change, Environmental Challenges and Vulnerable Communities: Assessing Legacies of the Past, Building Opportunities for the Future, is the first to coalesce data and research across a range of demographic, health, environmental and climate-related measures for Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. It examines state and local initiatives for climate change mitigation and adaptation, assessing the integration of vulnerable communities into the planning process.

A WEBINAR to discuss the findings and recommendations of the report will take place on Monday May 21, at 3:30 p.m. EST/ 2:30 p.m. CST/ 12:30 p.m. PST. The webinar will include representatives from both the office of Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

The researchers found that despite the fact that communities of color – which are already burdened by poverty, poor health conditions and lack of health care access – are especially susceptible to climate change threats, state and local leaders have generally failed to engage them and integrate their concerns into plans, programs and policies aimed at addressing climate change and its consequences.

Agriculture, the report includes recommendations for integrating vulnerable populations and their needs in climate-change planning activities, as well as in communication, coordination and response related to extreme weather events.

“This research found that state policies for dealing with the effects of climate change in the most vulnerable communities are generally lacking, and where they do exist their implementation is questionable,” said Ralph B. Everett, President and CEO of the Joint Center. “No state in this study has produced a comprehensive climate change adaptation plan, and economically vulnerable communities have been excluded from whatever planning initiatives are underway. This needs to change, and today’s report outlines how that can happen.”

“We found that for many vulnerable and especially racially and ethnically diverse populations in the region, environmental crises are right around the corner or already at their door. But despite the heightened sense of alarm, states and many communities are ignoring these communities in their disaster planning and other initiatives,” said Dennis Andrulis, Ph.D., who led the project team that produced the report. “Laws on the books, commissions and projects to address environmental challenges offer opportunities from which to build. But in moving forward state and local officials must do a better job of making sure those most vulnerable are a core part of their plans and actions.”

“This report has put forth some excellent recommendations for bringing communities of color into the process for dealing with the enormous threats that many of them face with regard to climate change and its expected impact,” said Danielle Deane, Director of the Joint Center’s Energy and Environment Program. “Their adoption at the state and local level will not only help save lives and improve conditions in these communities going forward, but a higher level of engagement will help take the entire planning process to a higher and more effective level, and that will be a good thing for all people living in these states.”

Brighter Side of Darkness

By Sylvia Lucas T h e Brighter Side of Darkness is author Sylvia Lucas’ first novel and hopefull y it won’t be her last.

In a skillfully written tale of the very complex life of journalist Donna Brown, Ms. Lucas introduces readers to page after page of drama, ethical dilemmas and challenges.

Some might say that Donna is naive and too trusting, others may point to a loving heart and a person who wants to see the good in others.

Then too, there may be some readers who think that she is downright gullible, that anyone can see the

until their wedding day to show her what he’s really made of.

If Donna is not careful, her life could be destroyed by the people she loves.

As she listens, with disbelief, to her husband-to-be as he explains why he can’t marry her, readers will cringe at Michael’s callousness as he says, “I’m just not ready, no matter how much I want to be. I’m not. I still get these urges --desires -- to be with other women occasionally. I thought I was cured of this when I met you but the closer it came to our wedding, the more these feelings started to come about.”

One word for Mr. Michael, sums up this egotistical womanizer -shallow.

Readers will deal with several emotions as they become aware of the many issues that Donna confronts as she navigates through life.

In addition to challenges at work, Donna has a family that won’t quit.

Talk about a strong-willed group of folks who have no problem speaking their minds, Donna needs help so that she can really begin living her own life.

Ms. Lucas provides intrigue, suspense and more as Donna faces her demons and moves to a position of strength and power at work, at home and in her personal life.

Surely she deserves to be happy and readers will embrace her triumphs as if they were their own.

But will she triumph? Will she be able to find love, and will she do that one thing that Bishop T. D. Jakes says is so important --forgive?

Surely Ms. Lucas knows that readers will want to read more about Donna because as confused and dysfunctional as she seems at times, Donna is a character many wil l identify with and root for.

And that makes for good reading!
