Message to the People...
Exhale How can you exhale, if you can’t breathe? You can’t and that’s why Eric Garner is no longer with us, the victim of an illegal choke-hold by Staten Island Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo. December 8 marks the 10th anniversary of my father’s death. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the blockbuster film, Do the Right Thing, and one of my favorite songs, Public Enemy’s “Fight The Power.”
Lavern Hall 4
If you will recall, in the movie, directed by Spike Lee, Radio Raheem died at the hands of police officers who also used an illegal choke-hold. As I reflect on the recent decisions by two grand juries regarding the deaths of Michael Brown (shot by a Ferguson, MO police officer) and Mr. Garner; I feel sad for their families.
YOU ARE INVITED TO A SPECIAL ADVANCE SCREENING OF
Let’s go to the movies 7
I can’t help think about how much I loved my daddy and how much of a loss it is to lose someone who had such an impact on your life. Eric Garner’s children will never forget hearing their father gasping for air as he informed police officers that he could not breathe. So as thousands across the country speak out, raising their voices to protest the decision by the Richmond County (NY) grand jury, we all have to take an opportunity to exhale. Actor, singer Jamie Foxx said there has to be a discussion about race. And he is correct.

Sure that discussion will be uncomfortable for some, actually for many; but it is imperative that we all start dealing with these ugly issues that continue to erode the quality of life, especially when you look at the disproportionate number of men of color who find themselves facing deadly force.

In Memoriam Jonathan Ferrell (l) and Randall Kerrick
Joseph Smith 18
Even during channel-surfing you can witness cop shows where men and women of all ethnicities find themselves embroiled in conflict with police officers. What makes it so much easier to kill a black man? Some officers say they color has nothing to do with it, that they don’t see color. If that’s the case, the officer may need a reality check. To say you don’t see color is insulting!
If you don’t see color, you don’t see the beauty, strength, humanity, love, greatness, brilliance or spirit, in a person. It makes it easier to discount, overlook, and eventually eliminate the person -- and this is becoming the norm.

Now on a positive note, there are some instances where police officers are indicted. Such was the case earlier this year in North Carolina involving Officer Randall Kerrick who murdered unarmed Jonathan Ferrell and was actually no-billed, but the attorney general resubmitted the case after a previous grand jury asked for a lesser included offense. We need to hear about the times when the outcomes are different. It’s hard to keep moving forward in the face of adversity and denial, as time after time nothing is done about the murders of unarmed black men. It’s hard to exhale in the face of blatant racism. When, and only when there are more shootings of others, then you will hear an even larger cry, and maybe folks will understand what folks in my community have been saying for so long. Or let a black police officer shoot an unarmed white man. Some things just don’t happen. I don’t want to see the wrongful shooting of anyone, but when it occurs justice has to prevail, so that ewe can all exhale.

KwanzaaFest has always been committed to the ideals of Emancipation, Enterprise, and Education. Annually, our HealthFest segment engages thousands of our visitors and is vital to the comprehensive physical health and awareness of this community. Each year KwanzaaFest transforms the Automobile Building at Fair Park into an admission free, two-day festival offering free concerts from national entertainers and local talent, children’s activities, and options for holiday buying that can’t be found elsewhere! However at the epicenter of all the planned activities is a huge health outreach effort known as HealthFest. Honoring World AIDS Day By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
Monday, December 1st marked the 26th annual observance of World AIDS Day across the globe. Over the years, countless lives both foreign and domestic have been claimed by this disease. AIDS is a global epidemic affecting a vast number of countries and individuals but here in the United States, the African American community is disproportionately affected. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of new HIV infections in African Americans is 8 times that of whites based on population size. Our communities account for a higher proportion of new HIV infections, including those living with HIV and the number of people ever diagnosed with AIDS. From these statistics, it is clear that the African American community faces the heaviest burden, but this does not mean that we must become victims of circumstance. HIV/AIDS is most certainly an epidemic, but it is one that I believe we can beat. This year’s World AIDS Day theme was “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.” The underlying message behind this title is clear; work to ensure better lives and access to care and treatment among those affected. In honor of the countless lives lost to HIV and AIDS, we must reflect and acknowledge the ongoing work that is required to combat this epidemic across
Another No-Bill The police officer, Daniel Pantaleo, had all charges dismissed as a Staten Island grand jury cleared him in the chokehold death of Eric Garner. Mr. Garner’s wife expressed disappointment upon hearing the news while Mayor Bill deBlasio and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called for peace and peaceful demonstrations. In a statement, the Richmond County district attorney said, “I first want to express my condolences to Eric Garner’s family for their loss, and to acknowledge the heartache of his mother, his wife, his children, as well as his other family members, loved ones, and friends, who have consistently carried themselves with grace during the past four months. A Richmond County grand jury has completed its investigation into the tragic death of Eric Garner on July 17, 2014, after being taken into police custody for an alleged sale of untaxed cigarettes in the Tompkinsville area of Staten Island, New York. After deliberation on the evidence presented in this matter, the grand jury found that there was no reasonable cause to vote an indictment,” said District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan, Jr. He continued, “Upon Eric Garner’s death, investigations were immediately commenced, and independently conducted, by the Office of the New York City Chief Medical Examiner, the Internal Affairs Bureau of the New York Police Department, and the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office. Although the Internal Affairs Bureau had immediately responded to the scene and conducted its own investigation, I directed all of the Detective Investigators of my Office, along with other investigative personnel, all of whom who do not work for the New York Police Department, to initiate an independent investigation, in cooperation with eight Assistant District Attorneys of my Office assigned to the case. That investigation spanned four months, and focused on locating civilian eyewitnesses with information and evidence to offer, speaking to those who provided medical treatment, whether on the scene or at the hospital, and consulting expert witnesses in the area of forensic pathology, policies, procedures, and training of police officers, as well as emergency medical technicians. the globe by first achieving these goals at home in our own communities. In order to successfully achieve our goals, we must be proactive by mobilizing our community to take the necessary steps required to eradicate this epidemic. First, we must focus on the issue at hand and recognize the level of effort required for communities, organizations, and governments. We must follow the HIV/AIDS Care Continuum Initiative, which provides an action plan for federal agencies, by partnering together as a community, reaching out to leaders, local organizations, and local health officials. If we are able to mobilize our community in this manner, achieving an AIDS-free generation is not far on the horizon. As a member of Congress and registered nurse committed to the advancement of modern medicine and better access to healthcare despite origin or income level, I believe this can be achieved through increased access to the full range of health care services; Robust support for domestic and global health programs – including those that focus on HIV/AIDS, family planning, and reproductive health care; Greater investment in sex education in the U.S. and around the world; Protection of the Affordable Care Act; and Advancing the health and human rights of all people. The AIDS-free world we want is within reach and I will continue to make these issues a priority during my time in Congress. I encourage my colleagues and each of our communities to stand in support of an AIDS-free world.”

Moms of Color Organize Peaceful Protest of Ferguson Grand Jury Results UPPER MARLBORO, Md., -- In response to the Ferguson, MO grand jury's failure to indict Darren Wilson for the murder of unarmed teen, Michael Brown, Mocha Moms, Inc. organized a #blackboysmatter social media campaign to combat the negative stereotypes of black and brown boys. At the time of this press release, that social media campaign had exceeded 10million impressions in less than two weeks. Moms of color from across the country are submitting photos of their sons in an effort to put real faces to, and humanize black and brown boys in America. "What these shootings in the last couple of years have shown us is
that, for too much of America, black boys are threatening," commented LaShaun PhillipsMartin, National Social Media Director for Mocha Moms, Inc. "We can't change the grand jury decision but we can change the way America sees our boys. So we took to social media with positive images of our sons and the hashtag #blackboysmatter." In a statement issued shortly after the grand jury decision was announced, Mocha Moms, Inc. issued the following statement, which read in part: "While we are disappointed, few of us are surprised. We respect the process of justice we have in this country. However, we will never accept the culture of preconceived notions and stereotypes that drives our sons unfairly and disproportionately into that process. We are so tired of our boys being killed. We are
so tired of courts failing to recognize the value of our children's lives. We will continue to teach our children to be respectful. We will continue to teach our children to value themselves and others. The only way America can truly become the great society we claim ourselves to be is if Americans commit to doing the same, and stop marginalizing and criminalizing our black and brown children." Mocha Moms, Inc. is a support group for mothers of color who have chosen to alter their career paths, either temporarily or permanently, to devote more time to their families and communities. While many of our members have eliminated employment altogether, others work part-time,

flex-time, night shifts, have home-based businesses, consult or freelance from home or have chosen alternative, less demanding career paths so they are more available to their families. We support the decisions made by our members. We will never pass judgment on mothers who choose to make or are forced to make different decisions for their families. Mocha Moms, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Mocha Moms, Inc. does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender or socio-economic level, education, or religion. Anyone who supports the mission and purpose of Mocha Moms, Inc. is welcome to join. The organization is essential because historically, mothers of color, particularly AfricanAmerican mothers, have not had the opportunity to devote the majority of their time to caring for their own families. Mocha Moms, Inc. serves as an advocate for those mothers and encourages the spirit of community activism within its membership.

OASIS OF SOUND Musical escape benefits newfound freedom
Lynne Haze introduces entertainers
E. Michael and Juanita Lee
by Eva D. Coleman “Dallas is hungry for jazz,” Juanita Lee said. Well-fed was the crowd that came out on the rainy November 22, 2014 evening to experience world-renown and local artist present their gifts at Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church in Garland, Texas. The event was a fundraiser for the Oasis Center, a social services entity of which Lee serves as Executive Director. Her husband, E. Michael Lee co-founded the organization along with visionary Dr. Leslie W. Smith, Senior Pastor of North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship in Plano, Texas. “This was his vision, to start a ministry that assisted first-time youth offenders and formerly
incarcerated people. This is why we’re here this evening,” Lee said. Emceed by The Diva with The Voice, 105.7 FM’s Lynne Haze, the lineup included top-notch talent. 2014 Soul Train Music Award nominee, saxophonist Vandell Andrew opened up the evening. His sound con-firmed why he’s nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance. Vocalist Damon K. Clark, who is also a vocal coach, skillfully delivered his instrument of voice, including a rendition of Chaka Khan’s Through the Fire that was both emotional and crowd-pleasing. Pervis Evans followed with traditional gospel which he then smoothly transitioned to a blend of jazz and contemporary sound. The evenings headliner was the internationally-known Tom Braxton who is also a local favorite. Braxton took the audience throughout his travels, explaining the worldly inspiration behind each song before he played them. He also answered the question some have regarding this type of music in “the church.” “God invented all types of music,” he said. “When you serve The Lord, everything is His.” Braxton, Clark and Evans closed out the evening with their version of Silent Night, which brings us back to the mission of the Oasis Center. The hope is that all is calm and bright when it comes to assisting the formerly incarcerated upon their return to society. “We have a lot of individuals coming out of prison that are having challenges in finding housing, finding jobs and having a difficult time

making decisions, so we give them a lot of cognitive skills and job readiness,” Lee said. The Oasis Center is faithbased and their help goes beyond the aforementioned services. “We introduce them Vandell Andrew to Christ if they don’t know Christ, and just give them encouragement and hope and let them know that God is a God of second chances,” Lee added. With the Oasis Center Gospel/Jazz Concert being so well-received, Lee says the hope is to turn this semi-annual event into an annual one, in addition to their annual banquet which takes place in the Spring and golf tournament in the Fall. “A gentleman came up to me and told me this was the best 22 dollars he had ever spent,” Lee chuckled. With talent of this caliber on hand, the ticket price was an incredible deal. For more information on the Oasis Center, visit www.oasisctr.org

Ha v e y o u e v e r b e e n t o o embarrassed to pray, too afraid or really just too ashamed? Maybe you were afraid, or perhaps just feeling a little guilty. Because we claim to know Jesus, it is during very difficult times, that to kneel down before the Lord, (especially after you’ve done exactly that thing which represents the absolute worst in you) seems impossible. I know this. Sin, you see, comes in many shapes and sizes and colors and flavors. Only you really know how successful the world has been in tantalizing you to do what you know you shouldn’t. Only Satan can tempt you in ways that leave you utterly defeated. He reigns in a world where one of his primary jobs is to get you to do what you’ve professed to God and man that you would never do. You know better. It must be rough then, when, instead of you calling on God, He makes a house call on you. After Adam ate the apple, the bible says God went looking for him. You see Adam knew better and He knew in his heart, I believe, that he couldn’t hide from his creator. And so it is with us.
E for Effort Spiritually Speaking By James A. Washington Real believers must pray and ask for forgiveness. In doing so, quite a few things should become crystal clear. One, you can’t procrastinate where God is concerned and two, you can’t hide from the truth. And the truth is you’re a sinner. We all are. And to make matters worse, the closer you get to God, the more obvious it is to you and Him how much of a sinner you really are. When sin succeeds in your life, it is appropriate to first seek forgiveness. I’m just acknowledging how hard it is to be forthright enough to say to God through Jesus, “I’m sorry.” We know as Christians we are obligated to do our very best. It, at times, might seem like a cruel joke to aspire to something you’ll never be able to achieve. None of us will ever, never commit a sin against God.
Living without sin is impossibility. The object is to try. Our success lies in our effort and our intent. We are obligated to seek Him out and let Him know that we know better and are truly repentant when we screw up. As a matter of fact, the closer we get to His light, the more likely we are to see the countless stains on our soul. Imperfection glows in the illumination of perfection. That’s just a fact. We need to understand that it’s okay to look for the Lord even when we know we have no right to ask for His mercy. Part of the mystery of faith, at least for me, is constantly coming to grips with just how much God loves me. In spite of what little I have to offer, He receives me, us, as He would His own Son. I t h i n k i t ’s i m p o r t a n t t o remember you can always go home. I

used to say home was wherever Mom was. Now I know home is wherever God is. If that be the case and I’m trying to be a vessel for the Holy Spirit, then I have to accept that God resides in me and wherever I am is home. Hopefully that should make following His Word and doing His will easier, particularly when it comes to choosing right from wrong and asking for mercy when I go wrong instead of right. The key is knowing that God is not interested in style. He’s only concerned about substance. Besides only a fool would screw things up so badly that he or she is not welcomed in their own home. Ashamed, embarrassed, afraid, guilty, it’s always better to go home and explain yourself. At least you know the people there really care about you. The alternative is just too frightening to contemplate. May God bless and keep you always.

Need to Move On Dear Alma, I have been with this person for six years, and we’ve had our up and downs, like any relationship. We are living apart but he still wants us to keep our friendship. I don’t, because he needs to get himself together financially and mentally. Basically, I feel if someone truly loves you, they will do whatever it takes to be with the person. He’s just not moving fast enough for me. I do love him and want to be with him, but I can’t wait any longer. Now my problem is trying to move on and forget him. What’s the best way to handle this? Name withheld Dear Nameless, Six is the magic number. So you’ve been with him for six years. You guys don’t live together; you aren’t

Ask Alma engaged, and he needs to get it together. He wants to continue a “friendship,” but you want more, and since he hasn’t obliged, you’re ready to move on. First, I applaud you for making the decision to break it off, redefine, redirect and find your joy. Some people stay in an unfulfilled relationship for the sake of being in a relationship, and that’s never a healthy decision. Truth be told, let’s give him credit; a friendship is all

that he wants, and a friendship is all that he has to offer – to you. You, on the other hand, have decided that’s not enough, and that’s ok. You know you better than anyone else. By making the decision to break it off and move on in your mind, all you need now is for your heart to catch on. That ol’ heart always takes a little more time with this sorta thing, doesn’t it? While working through the heartache, keep in mind – after a break-up, we think…and ponder…

and reminisce…about how we wish it could have been. I call that the coulda, shoulda, woulda stage. Since you will be thinking about it, for a little while anyway, put yourself on the path of thinking about the real deal of what’s been happening for the past six years. Even if you have to write it down. That way, you can recall and reread what really happened and how it made you feel. Now, the next step toward moving on – take the time to refuel. I’d suggest focusing on what brings you strength. If there’s a particular minister or motivational speaker you like, listen to them, every day. If you like to walk, run, dance, workout, swim, do that for yourself – every day – or as much as you can. Download your best pick-me-up

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas
By Patrice J. Holmes
editorial@dallasweekly.com
Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity
Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days
Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
