On September 10, 2014, I had planned to have a nice, lavish dinner for my mother. After all, Earline Elizabeth Gadson would be turning 80.

What a milestone!

She didn’t know that I was planning a big deal, or at least she didn’t let on that she knew. I never said anything either. I intended to highlight accomplishments in her life and share messages from around the country.

I also planned to showcase hundreds of her pictures and I knew she would have gotten a kick out of that because she took pictures wherever she went. She loved her family and she took so many pictures.

I remember her saying that she only had mental images of her parents.

“All these years, I just have the memory of my parents because I don’t have any pictures,” she once explained. “I really wish I had pictures of them and even though I can describe them perfectly -- my mother’s long beautiful hair and my father’s pretty black skin and wavy hair -- I would really love to see them. That’s why I take so many pictures!”

And boy do we have pictures of my mother! Whether she was going to church, Atlantic City, NAACP or National Council of Negro Women functions or visiting with family or friends, Mother, as we affectionately called her, took pictures.

My plans for her were three-fold. I wanted to do something special on that day, with the family and other loved ones. Then I would take her to Oklahoma or Shreveport for her personal form of “therapy.” Finally she would get to visit her new church home in Dallas, Friendship-West Baptist Church -- where she was already acquainted with Senior Pastor Freddie Haynes III and Pastoral Care Pastor James Fitzgerald.

Although she visited the church at the old sanctuary prior to moving to Dallas, Mother had yet to enter the new sanctuary. Friendship-West was her new home after decades of worshipping at the historic New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.

As I began putting things together for her celebration, little did I know that Mother would not live to see her 80th birthday.

Sure, together we had written her obituary, sat down with John Beckwith of Golden Gate Funeral Home to make arrangements, selected her special songs and attire; but it wasn’t supposed to be so soon.

So, it was on June 10, 2014 that Mother closed her eyes for the last time and took her last breath.

There was a feeling that came over me, as I stood over her. I felt pressure in my stomach, my womb. There were many times over the past 18 months since she came to live with me that I found myself holding my stomach and imagining what thoughts went through her head as she held me for the first time.

Ironically she looked at me in the flesh for the first time on June 20 and on June 20, 2014, 56 years later, my eyes rested on her in the flesh for the last time.

We celebrated her life with song and pictures. Some very special people shared the experience with me and my family. I so appreciate those who took time to acknowledge and support us and those who continue to do so today.

There were expressions of love that I am sure Mother would have enjoyed. She loved lights, cameras and a big party.

Someone said that we shouldn’t celebrate her life on my birthday because it would always be a reminder. Even my brothers and sisters expressed concern.

I told them that I sincerely believe that every day will be a reminder.

As recently as Sunday, when I was watching the tribute to retiring New York Yankee Derek Geter, I thought of Mother and how she would have enjoyed the celebration.

Whenever I am preparing a meal I think of Mother, because she had me in the kitchen at a young age, learning how to cook.

As commercials aired touting the new season of Family Feud with Steve Harvey, I thought of Mother, who watched that show constantly.

When I look in the mirror, there is Mother.

And there are so many other memories, like her favorites songs, her friends, Atlantic City and family.

But most important.

When I inhale and exhale; I think of Mother.

Number of senior citizens in our country is growing

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The number of senior citizens in our country is growing faster than at any other time in our history. They are living longer lives, and many are in need of physical and mental healthcare that will be provided, in many instances, by members of their families.

Data from the 2010 U.S. Census stated that the growth of older persons outpaced that of young people.

According to the Census, one of every five persons in our society today is beyond 50 years of age.

It is predicated that in 16 years, one of every five people in our country will be 65 years or older.

With longevity comes health issues, and often younger people are finding themselves having to care for aging parents or grandparents, while holding down full-time jobs, and raising their own families.

There are a number government programs and agencies that can be very helpful to the aged, and to those who are caring for them. The United States Administration on Aging, for instance, provides information on resources for elderly persons that include at home services, legal issues regarding the elderly and care-giving options.

A web site, NIHSeniorHealth.gov, contains information on various diseases, and disorders that can affect elderly persons.

Available in written and audio forms, the information is compiled by the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of Medicine.

The site Medicare.gov lists nursing centers as well as long-term care payment options and information on various drug usage plans. The Medicare site is interactive, and easy to navigate.

The National Center for Assisted Living is a perfect tool for those who are faced with having to place a loved one in an institutional facility. It outlines costs, dietary provisions, payment methods and social activities offered by various residential facilities.

As a part of the historic “great society” mandate, former President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Older Americans Act of 1965. The administration recognized that the population was aging, and needed assistance.

In 2000, the federal government established The National Family Caregiver Support Program.

The program provided grant funding to state governments, allowing them to assist caregivers

who were caring for aging family members that lived with them.

The emotional and physical toll on caregivers can be tremendous. The more knowledge a caregiver has about government programs, and other services that are available to assist in the care of a loved one, the fewer mental and financial pressures they will endure.

For instance, if an elderly parent’s social security benefits are extremely low, the caregiver might be able to access additional funding through the Social Security Department’s Supplemental Income Program, known as SSI. Also, since many elderly patients are taking numerous prescription drugs, caregivers should become familiar with the Food and Drug Administration’s web site which contains information on drug ingredients, drug interactions, and recommended dosages for prescription medications.

Seniors have worked very hard to create a society in which we are able to live and proper.

In their golden years we must be there for them, just as they were there while they were actively working and laying the foundation for today’s society, and its quality standard of living.

For those movie buffs, this was Chris Rock's presidential debate statement in the movie “Head of State.” The interesting thing about the movie is that it was a foretelling of Senator Barack Obama’s journey to the Oval Office.

Although Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has not confessed to all of the maladies that Chris Rock mentioned, I'm voting for her.

Her ongoing campaign and her new book “Forgetting to be afraid” are a reminder that we need people in high office who have survived living in the low stations of American life.

It’s time to forget our weaknesses and attack their strength. We need to vote. Forget about being afraid.

My 100-Day Progress Report

Editor’s Note: Although Administrator Contreras-Sweet shared this message almost 60 days ago, we felt it was important for our readers to see it again.

It has been an exhilarating first 100 days on the job. When I was sworn in as SBA Administrator in April, I promised to “get more loans into the hands of entrepreneurs who reflect the diversity of America by making it easier for community banks and microlenders to become our partners.”

Following up on this promise, I recently announced a transformative new plan to automate SBA lending and streamline and simplify the agency’s underwriting process to attract more lending partners and open up new markets for small business owners who need capital to expand and grow.

Days after this announcement, which will ease the burdens on lenders approving small-dollar loans to entrepreneurs, I appeared at a Clinton Global Initiative conference in Denver to help announce an exciting commitment called the Century Club.

Eight Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) each pledged to make at least 100 small business loans a year for the next 10 years, which will inject $1 billion of additional capital into America’s small business ecosystem.

Last week, we continued our progress in expanding access to capital. At the White House, I joined President Obama to announce a new initiative called SupplierPay. More than two dozen major corporations pledged to pay their small business suppliers faster and offer other creative financing solutions to get entrepreneurs access to affordable working capital so they have the payment certainty to make new hires and grow their companies.

We’ve also been focused on creating new opportunities for our veterans who wish to translate their military leadership skills into opportunities to serve their country as civilian job creators. We “rebooted” our popular Boots to Business PAGE 8

entrepreneurship program – a two-day crash course in starting a small business followed by an eight-week, instructor-led online course. We’re now conducting this program for transitioning service members at more than 200 military installations worldwide. And last week at the White House, we expanded this initiative to serve veterans who’ve already transitioned out.

At Twitter headquarters, the SBA launched a new competition for entities – university incubators or local nonprofits – that help seed start-ups by offering up office space, mentoring, networking, business-plan assistance, and sometimes startup capital, too.

We’re exporting the Silicon Valley support model to communities in Middle America. The competition will fund up to 50 accelerators that are focused on key industries like clean energy and health care, as well as those focused on underserved populations, including women entrepreneurs, minorities, and small business owners in distressed urban and rural areas.

In recognition of the reality that there are still communities disproportionately struggling in the aftermath of the Great Recession, I also launched Scale-Up America – another competitive program that will bring intensive SBA assistance to up to 14 cities with strong small business growth potential. We’re excited about this program, because more than 90 percent of new jobs generated by small businesses come from the expansion of existing businesses.

Finally, as an immigrant myself, I was proud to represent the United States in El Salvador to meet with the country’s new leadership and recognize the peaceful succession of President Salvador Sánchez Cerén. I had the opportunity to meet with Salvadoran small business owners, who provide 70 percent of the country’s jobs, and promote the bilateral Partnership for Growth plan signed by both nations in recognition of the increasingly important role Latin American nations are playing in the global economy.

These first 100 days have been a whirlwind, and I am buoyed by the energy and optimism of all the entrepreneurs I’ve met in cities across America. There’s still so much more to do. Brandon Hobdy remembered Student -Athlete killed in senseless violent act Teammates, classmates (present and former) coaches and friends turned out to pay tribute to Brandon T. Hobdy, who was gunned down in an early morning shooting on August 24, 2013 in Magnolia, Ark. At the sometimes emotional celebration of life held at Mount Hebron Baptist Church in Garland, on Saturday, September 6, 2014 Brandon was honored with songs and tributes that focused on his positive and supportive personality.

Activist and businessman Will Hobdy, praised Brandon’s mother as he talked about his son’s wonderful spirit and faith.

The shock of Brandon’s death was felt not only at Southern Arkansas University, but back at home too, where the Lakeview Centennial graduate excelled in sports and had many friends.

Skilled on the basketball court, his goal was to play professional football and eventually teach and become a coach.

Attendees at the funeral donned felt footballs with the number 17 (Brandon’s number) marked on them and they also received a ticket to the SAU football game.

Columbia County (ARK) Sheriff 's Office (CCSO) deputies were dispatched to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) on Highway 82 East at 1:13 on that Sunday morning after reports of a fight and shots fired at the private, nonschool related event.

According to deputies, SAU senior wide receiver Brandon, 23, of Garland, TX, and former student Wayne A. Payton, 24, were both taken to the Magnolia Regional Medical Center—where both later died from their injuries.

In a press statement from SAU, CCSO has said several people were removed from the VFW after causing a disturbance.

was reported that both Hobdy and Payton were innocent bystanders.

After reports that witnesses were uncooperative, it was announced that a suspect had been identified.

Town Hall meeting held at Friendship-West In the second of a series of town hall meetings, Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Dallas Police Chief David Brown talked candidly about issues facing law enforcement officials and the communities they serve.

As in the previous town hall meeting at St. Paul United Methodist Church, citizens came looking for answers.

Addressing topics such as excessive force by police officers, citizen rights to view tapes of crime scenes and dealing with the mentally ill, in a two-hour meeting, Dallas’ chief law enforcement heads expressed sympathy to the relatives and loved ones of murdered citizens while encouraging cooperation and support.

In the meeting, which was comoderated by Friendship-West Senior Pastor Frederick D. Haynes III and Communications Director Debbie Denmon, citizens expressed a special interest in having police officers living in the communities they serve.

CURRY: The Killing of Black Men Continues Public opinion polls confirm a fact that has been documented in instances ranging from the O.J. Simpson verdict to recent events in Ferguson: When it comes to race, Blacks and Whites largely view events through a different set of lenses.

Several recent polls provided yet more proof of this disheartening trend.

According to a recent New York Times/ CBS News poll, more than half of Black Americans polled – 57 percent – said the killing of the unarmed, 18-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson, Mo. Police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9 was “not justified.” Among Whites, 25 percent said the shooting death was unjustified.

In addition, 31 percent of White Americans, and 71 percent of Blacks, said they think police are generally more likely to use deadly force against a person of color than a White person.

The performance of Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, also received mixed reviews, so to speak.

He mobilized the Missouri State Highway Patrol and then activated the Missouri National Guard after declaring a state of emergency and imposing a curfew. Blacks were twice as likely as Whites to say involving the National Guard only made matters worse.

Only a quarter of Blacks nationally are satisfied with Gov. Nixon’s actions, while nearly half said Nixon’s performance in the aftermath of the shooting was unsatisfactory.

In contrast, Whites were divided: A third were satisfied and a third dissatisfied Not surprisingly, Blacks, Obama’s most loyal bloc, continue to back him by large margins.

Sixty percent of African Americans said they were satisfied with the president’s actions; 20 percent said they were dissatisfied. Whites were split, with 35 percent in support of President Obama and 39 percent dissatisfied.

By George E. Curry thought race relations have improved since Obama has been in office, 52 percent felt they are about the same as before and 35 percent said race relations have gotten worse under Obama.

Of those saying things had gotten worse, 40 percent were White and 21 percent were African American.

There are many independent markers that indicate, in general, that race relations have improved over the last half century, including attitudes toward interracial marriages.

Amid such progress, however, there is undeniable evidence that Blacks and Whites look at racially-tinged events from a different perspective.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that 80 percent of African Americans say the shooting in the St.

percent feel race is getting more attention than it deserves in the Michael Brown case. But only 18 percent of Blacks share that view.

According to the poll, 65 percent of Blacks feel police have gone too far in reacting to Michael Brown’s death and 20 percent feel the response was about right.

Again, Whites had a different reaction, with 33 percent saying police had gone too far and a roughly equal proportion, 32 percent saying authorities had acted properly.

More than half of all African Americans – 54 percent – reported they were following events in Ferguson very closely.

Less than half of Whites –25 percent – and Latinos – 18 percent – said they were closely following the events in Missouri.

There was a political divide as well, with 68 percent of Democrats feeling the Michael Brown case raises important issues while only 22 percent of Republicans contending it raises racial issues that need to be discussed.

Also, 61 percent of Republicans say the issue of race has gotten too much attention in the case; only 21 percent of Democrats support that view.

The 1996 murder trial of O.J. Simpson exposed this raw divide. A CNN/USA Today Poll showed that 62 percent of African-Americans supported the jury’s decision to acquit the former football star. However, only 20 percent of Whites agreed with the jury.

There was a similar split in polls taken during Hank Aaron’s campaign to break Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record and Barry Bond overtaking Aaron.

Even on a supposedly race-neutral issue such as federal aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina, racial views were split. According to a CNN/USA Today poll, six in 10 African Americans said the federal government was slow to rescue residents of New Orleans because many of them were Black.

However, only one in eight Whites concurred.

How can we narrow the racial divide when we can’t even agree if there is one?

Forever is more than a State of Mind

By James A. Washington I suppose if we’re all honest with ourselves, life is something that we take for granted most of the time. But when you stop and think about it, it is the one thing in our eternal existence that we easily relate to.

From birth to death, our eyes are open. Our minds are active and our time, as we know it, is running out. I can’t remember the name of the movie, but the line was, from the moment you’re born you begin to die.

Life in these terms is a finite thing.

It lasts for an exact period of time. Now that’s life as we know it. However, to consider yourself an eternal being can be a bit of a challenge for anyone, myself included.

Imagining the time between first opening your eyes and their last closing, as but a chapter of your eternal life is pretty easy.

Living this physical life as chapter of always was, always will, be can be a stretch for even the most devout of Christians.

My point is that the promise of eternal life doesn’t resonate the same way that “having a good time…wish you were here” does. One is tangible and relatable. The other is a promise yet to be realized. You have to die first.

For my purposes, let’s call it the test of death. You pass or fail based on the degree of faith you bring to the classroom.

Spiritually Speaking This is that John 3:16 stuff. I’m focusing on 14. “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.”

So a condition for eternal life is the belief in Christ and all that goes with it.

My sanctified imagination says I have been part of God’s great creation since before the beginning of time because God has existed forever.

The question here seems to be will I be part of it after my physical demise?

It’s a question of faith and that faith is tested right here right now.

It all rests on your understanding of Christ as the way, the truth and the life.

It is so much more to me than trite biblical sayings. You got to know that you know that you know. May I paraphrase and say this is about relationship and acceptance of Christian truth. I believe what I can see. It’s quite comforting.

The question here is can you believe what you don’t see?

I do not want to lose focus here. I’m talking about eternal life. Do you believe you will live in some form or fashion forever? Here it is.

“But whoever lives by the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” John 3:21. My point? How you live, what you believe, who you trust goes a long way towards existing in eternity.

Maybe you don’t think about it much. But my imagination sometimes gets the best of me because the point of

the dash between my birth and my death that will appear on my tombstone is really but a moment in time.

I just contemplate from time to time its impact on the eternal part of me. It all seems to be predicated on the following. Remember this for the test.

“But now that you have been set free (by Christ) from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 6: 22-23.

And for the record, don’t trip about the word slave here. Slavery here means buying fully into becoming what God created us to be.

Simply put, born again is a state of mind; one that puts forever into perspective. We live there in God’s time and not our own.

Nutrition Facts Label Can Help Young People Make Healthful Choices To help kids make healthful dietary choices, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration encourages kids to Read the Label!

The Nutrition Facts Label is a simple tool available on food and beverage packages. It lets kids know exactly what they're eating and helps them choose and compare snacks and other foods. The earlier they start using the Nutrition Facts Label, the sooner they'll be making choices that keep them feeling great and promote long-term good health! Young people can follow these tips to get started – and they will soon see how easy reading the label really is! Parents, caregivers, and others who interact with young people can also help model label-reading by following these key steps, too.

Check the serving size. All of the nutrition information listed on the Nutrition Facts Label is based on one serving of that food. But, it's common for one package of a food to contain more than one serving. If a package contains two (or more) servings and you eat the entire package, you are consuming two (or more) times the

number of calories and nutrients listed on the Label. So be sure to check!

Consider the calories. For weight management (whether it's to lose, gain, or maintain weight), it's important to pay attention to the calories. The overall goal is to balance how many calories you eat with how many calories your body uses. As a general rule, 400 or more calories per serving for a single food is high and 100 calories is moderate.

Choose nutrients wisely. There are certain nutrients that young people should aim to get "less of." Kids can use the Percent Daily Value (%DV) on the Nutrition Facts Label to find foods that are lower in saturated fat, sodium, and sugars. Here's an easy guideline: 5%DV or less of a nutrient means the food is low in that nutrient, and 20%DV or more means it's high! Sugars have no %DV, so remind kids to use the amount of grams (g) as a guide.

Kids can start using the Nutrition Facts Label today to compare foods and make smart snack choices. By knowing a food's serving size, calories, and nutrients – they'll be taking charge of managing their own healthful diet!

Rosa Parks’ papers to reside at Library of Congress The Library of Congress will be the new home of the Rosa Parks Collection, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington announced today. The collection will be at the Library on a 10-year loan from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.

The collection comprises approximately 1,500 items including personal correspondence and photographs, autobiographical notes, letters from presidents, her Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal, additional honors and awards, clothing and furniture, and 200 drawings by schoolchildren and hundreds of greeting cards from individuals thanking her for her inspirational role in the civil rights movement.

Items from the collection will be incorporated in spring of 2015 into the new exhibition “The Civil Rights Act of 1964: A Long Struggle for Freedom,” which opens Sept. 10. In addition, the Library will digitize the documents and visual materials and make them widely available through its website.

“Rosa Parks is an iconic figure in the American civil rights movement, the very definition of the quiet power of an individual to inspire action in others,” Billington said. “This collection joins our unparalleled holdings of African-American materials in a public institution.”

Howard G. Buffett, chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, said, “My goal was always to ensure this historic collection would be made available for the public’s benefit so that as many people as possible can learn about Rosa Parks and the sacrifices she made to support the civil rights movement. I believe that partnering with the Library of Congress to display these items in our nation’s capital is the best way to achieve that goal.”

The Rosa Parks Collection joins such important civil rights materials at the Library of Congress as the papers of Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, Roy Wilkins and the records of both the NAACP and the National Urban League. The collection becomes part of the larger story of our nation, available alongside the presidential papers of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln, and the papers of many others who fought for equality, including Susan B. Anthony and Patsy Mink.

Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus to a white passenger on Dec. 1, 1955 led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a seminal event in the U.S. civil rights movement.

"The Civil Rights Act of 1964: A Long Struggle for Freedom" opens Sept. 10 and closes on Sept. 12, 2015. Located in the Southwest Gallery on the second level of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C., the year-long exhibition will be free and open to the public Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Not Speaking to My Brother Dear Alma, I cannot speak to my brother and I don’t know if I ever will again.

The night our Dad died I called him to tell him and asked him to meet me at my Mom’s house. He said no, he couldn’t but he’d be there the next day.

Which he did and he did take care of things for my Mom and me.

But, you would not believe why he said no.

It was because he and his wife along with two other couples had rented a limo to take them to the Jay Z & Beyoncé concert and he didn’t want to change his plans.

Can you believe it?!

My husband says I’m wrong and I should make up with him. I disagree.

Remembering Barriett Dale Johnson Barriett Dale Johnson, known as Rich, was born in Marshall, Texas on August 2, 1960 to Tonnette and Clifford Johnson. He was the second oldest in a family of five children.

He is survived by his father Clifford Johnson, his brother Clifford Johnson Jr., his younger twin sister Harriett Gale Johnson, his middle sister Yolonda Sands, his youngest sister Yvette Blair Lavallais, his nephewMaurice Johnson, his niece Nariana Sands, his brother-in-law Carl M. Lavallais and a host of relatives, friends and coworkers who will always remember him as the best friend anyone could have.

His mother, Tonnette Blair, is waiting for him Heaven.

He was the kind of guy who always had a kind word for you, who always cared about what you were going through, who would give you his last if he could. He loved to shoot pool, had his own pool cue stick and was always ready to challenge in a friendly game.

He was an avid sports enthusiast and loved to watch football games, no matter whether NFL or college. His favorite college team was SMU, where his niece Nariana now attends and he loved the Dallas Cowboys.

Cooking was a favorite pastime of the entire family.

He learned to cook at the early age of 11. He used to cook T-bone steaks and have them ready when his parents came home.

He was a sharp dresser who loved to cut and style his own hair. He was great with the barber tools and will be the best barber in Heaven.
