Message to the People... Black or White: Let the discussions begin

Viola Davis 6

Cheryl Smith

If you’re looking for an opportunity to initiate a candid discussion on race, here’s a movie that opens the door wide open and in such a way that all participants could benefit significantly from listening and trying to understand. Not knowing what to expect from the movie, Black or White, featuring multiple award honorees Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer; it was refreshing to see race dealt with so honestly and in your face. Sure some might point to stereotypes and dismissive, especially when minimizing the value of the messages to avoid those tough discussions. The portrayals were very thought-provoking and eye-opening.

Hang Time 8

Elliott Anderson (Costner) is the grandfather who, after losing his wife, finds himself in a court battle for custody of his granddaughter. Rowena Jeffers (Spencer) is standing up for her son who has been an absentee father for the most part and Costner’s daughter died during childbirth. When Costner’s wife is killed in an accident he takes time off from work as he attempts to take care of young Eloise, who is played by the oh so charming Jillian Estell. Interestingly race was the topic of discussion at the Potter’s House in Dallas earlier this month and next month veteran journalist Hazel Trice Edney will be leading a discussion that is sure to be emotional at times. Too often I have seen folks become very dismissive when the subject of race is broached. Instead of acknowledging other’s feelings or issues, conversations are usually abruptly ended or glossed over. Sometimes these type of discussions become volatile and violent, which leads to a stalemate. That stalemate continues to paralyze our country.

Bounce TV 16

Fortunately many of the scenarios that erode race relations in America are addressed in Black or White. This movie will have you laughing, almost crying and gasping in shock. If you are honest, however, you will also find yourself re-examining your actions and inactions, as well as those of others. I found the movie refreshing. A must-see. Paula Newsome is hilarious as Judge Cummins as she doesn’t have to say a word to get her point across.

Anthony Mackie, as the attorney, Jeremiah Jeffers, trying to reunite his grandniece with her father’s side of the family, give a stellar performance as he struggles with his family’s demons. And Costner has his own demons to deal with. This is the movie to see. There are so many issues that are addressed other than skin color and culture. Black or White opens this weekend. Take the children. Take the grandparents. Take your co-workers, students, neighbors, or church members. Then have those important discussion that while uncomfortable are so very necessary. Next plan to see Selma. And continue the discussions. Change your way of thinking and make this world a better place.

JOHNSON: The importance of research funding By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Recently, a group of scientists announced the discovery of a new powerful antibiotic that they say has the potential to reduce deaths from dangerous infections. An estimated 75,000 people die each year from hospital-acquired infections, but new antibiotics are rarely introduced because it is simply not profitable for the private sector to do basic research and development work. e type of public health breakthrough announced by the scientists can only occur when the federal government supports scientific research. As the ranking member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I have been fortunate over the years to meet with a wide range of individuals in a c a d e m i a , i n d u s t r y, a n d government. A common area of agreement among them is that federal investment in fundamental research

leads to new discoveries, technologies and products. One has only to look at information technology companies such as Texas Instruments, Apple, and Google, among others, to understand the path from fundamental research to economic growth and job creation. One of the most important pieces of legislation to move through Congress in recent years, the America COMPETES Act, was

based on recommendations from a 2005 National Academies’ report raising the alarm that our scientific and technological building blocks were eroding at a time when our global competitors were gaining strength. e America COMPETES Act of 2007 (reauthorized in 2010) included significant increases in the research budgets of our core science agencies to ensure that our nation remained the world’s scientific and technical global leader, and to strengthen American competitiveness through sustained investments in science, innovation and science education. In a federal address in 1988, President Reagan said, “…although basic research does not begin with a particular practical goal, when you look at the results over the years, it ends up being one of the most practical things government does… It is an indisp ens able investment in America’s future.”

I agree with the late president. Federal support for scientific research should not be a partisan matter, rather an American matter. Unfortunately, our nation’s competitiveness continues to be compromised by cuts to our research and development funding through efforts in Washington to starve our federal budget. As I oen tell my colleagues, we are eating our seed corn. I will do everything in my power to continue the work to reaffirm America’s role as the w o r l d’s e n g i n e o f s c i e nt i fi c d is c ove r y and te ch nol o g i c a l innovation. Our national security, way of life and future prosperity are inextricably intertwined with our commitment to keeping research and development among our nation’s top priorities. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

May Godmethods bless and keep you always… the with the objectives.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. HALL: Celebrate or Commiserate Black History Month ought always begin with the knowledge, experiences, and cultural nuances of and about black people. Listening, and re-listening to the acceptance speech given by Viola Davis at the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony makes that painfully obvious. know her for her leading role in the weekly TV drama; “How to get away with Murder.” The latter is based on the brilliance of a college law professor who makes Perry Mason look like a first year law clerk. We should commence the celebration or commiseration of Black History Month in 2015 by the realization and revelation that we still have not arrived. We h a v e p r o b a b l y surpassed the Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787, (google it) but we ain’t been made

America and still palatable to too many of us. When the police see young Black men they see “demons” that have to be met with deadly force. When America and even some Negroes see Black women who are not lightskinned, mulatto, quadroon or octoroon, they can’t see any beauty at all. Especially if they ain’t got no long weave! The number one movie in the Black community is Selma, and it looks like we haven’t come far since the victory at the Edmund Pettis Bridge.

We march for peace and protest for our rights only to be met by police with paramilitary gear and war-time strategies for hand to hand combat. Don’t worry, I will get to Viola Davis before I run out of space, but peep this. When students set fire to the city of Columbus after Ohio State won the NCAA championship, the terms used were “excited crowds, revelers and overzealous fans.” If the majority of these “students” had been black or if the reason for the public gathering was “blackish,” the terms “looters” and “thugs” would have been in the media headlines. Fox News would have had a field day calling them everything short of the N-Word. Viola Davis's comments to the mega-white audience were sagacious and reverent, but her attempts were obviously meant to instill some black pride and hope in others. “When I tell my daughter stories at night, inevitably, a few things happen. Number one, I use my imagination. I always start

I MESSENGER

with life, and then I build from there. And then the other thing that happens is she always says, ‘Mommy, can you put me in the story?’ “‘And you know...it starts from the top up.’” Davis used this pillow-talk parable as a springboard into her personal protest to the absence of African-Americans nominated for awards in the Oscars in 2014. Again!! "Thank you Shonda Rhimes, [producer] Betsy Beers and [creator] Peter Nowalk for thinking of a leading lady who looks like my ' c l a s s i c b e a u t y, ' " s h e said, referring to Stanley's assertion that Davis was "less classically beautiful" than Halle Berry or Kerry Washington. "I'm so proud to be an actor and so happy to do what I do. And I'm so happy that people have accepted me in this role at this stage in my career. I hope Viola Davis is wise enough not to take this personal. She could be commanderin-chief and not get any more respect. The Sony tapes proved that when two major Sony execs laughed as to whether President Obama would be a fan of Django, 12 Years a Slave or Think like a Man. There is no question that we have come a long way, but most February months I don’t know if we should celebrate or commiserate.

SERENA Great American and the Seahawks as characteristically and collectively “angry.” Anyway; as far back as 2013, Rolling Stone magazine referred to Serena in an article: Serena Williams: The Great One and even as she tied Evert and Martina with 18 Grand Slam wins, Chris commented that Serena was already the greatest woman to ever play the game, now she’s won 19.

be the premier, elite athlete of our day? Could she be greater than the whole host of NFL, NBA, ABL NHL Hall of Famers? Could she be greater than the pantheon of your favorite Olympic heroes? Speaking of the Olympics, Serena has a big sister with the Greek name Venus, (also a champion) with whom she shares a perfect doubles record. So while you’re ogling the awesome Serena Williams

Did I mention that Ms. Williams accomplished this feat at age 33, winning her 6th Australian Open with an upper r e s p i r a to r y co n d i t i o n w h i c h l e d to uncontrollable coughing and vomiting during a rain delay? I don’t want to hear another word about Brady’s sniffles or Sherman’s sore elbow. She served 18 100+mph aces, while not feeling well. She actually said she felt better after throwing up. Can you say, “Champion?” How scary is the notion that this 33year-old Black woman from Compton may

Points of interest: ~She unfortunately does not enjoy endorsement opportunities awarded to lesser female tennis players. ~With $60 million in career earnings, she’s likely underpaid by male standards. ~It’s predicted Serena will surpass Steffi Graf ’s record by age 35.

Capturing her 19th Grand Slam win at the Au s t r a l i a n Open yesterday, passing Chris E v e r t a n d Ma r t i n a Navritilova, each with 18 wins, Serena falls only three wins from tying Steffi Graf and four from taking over the all time record, making her the all-time greatest female tennis player of all time. In an era of supersuperlatives where ever yday someone in the boxing world or the NFL or NBA is being heralded as the greatest in the game today or the greatest to have ever played the game, Serena may in fact be the greatest athlete of our generation, male or female. In t h e 2 0 1 4 Ne w Yorker magazine article: Serena Williams Is America’s Greatest Athlete the writer offers: “Sorry, LeBron. Sorry, Tiger. Sorry, Derek.” One day before the Not-So-Super Bowl and all the hyper-hype that comes with it in the form of controversy (Deflate-Gate), or White Hats vs. Black Hats, I would add, sorry, Tom, sorry, Russell, sorry Gronk, sorry, Mr. Sherman and Mr. Lynch. Hang Time - A Harlem Globetrotters Weekend by Eva D. Coleman

To say my eight-year-old is a b a s ke t b a l l fan is an understatement. She loves the sport, and after a couple of years of her asking, I’ve finally signed her up to play on a team. A few months ago, I noticed her lying on her side on the kitchen floor, dribbling the ball while spinning her body clockwise. “Where’d you get that from?” I asked.

“The Harlem Globetrotters,” she answered as she continued to dribble and spin. Recently, she created a make-shift Truth be told, I noticed her ability VIP credential that she attached to dribble about three years ago. to a lanyard. Along with her I watched her as she handled the ball on my tile kitchen floor (I don’t mind this activity inside because I’m totally not the outdoorsy type). Ne a r l y t w o y e a r s ago, a neighbor approached me at a p a r t y a n d a s ke d , “Have you seen your baby play basketball?” “Not really, what’s up?” I questioned. “I saw her playing on the court at school with the boys, and she was taking them!” She excitedly replied. When others take notice and share their thoughts, it sort of validates underlying thinking.

The Globetrotters line-up included a lone female, T-Time, whom my child can now quickly recount her factual history with the team. The skills and antics on the court did not disappoint the crowd. The entire show was interactive and highly entertaining. The autograph session on the court after the game that was available to all fans added an even special treat to the evening. As I watched my WNBA hopeful look on with delight and her big sister enjoying herself as well, I couldn’t help but t a ke this precious moment in. I’ll remember it forever as a bonus hang time with my girls. No fouls. No injuries. Just fun. (Eva is a widow currently raising her two daughters in McKinney, Texas. WASHINGTON: Friends Make the Difference “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Proverbs 27:6. This is an effort to get you to define who your friends really are. Who is it that you can absolutely depend on? I am one of those people who believe that you can determine this more in difficult circumstances than in situations where life is good and things are going well. The bible is full of chapters and verse about friendship even unto death, if you can believe that. John 15:13. According to the bible friends love each other, do not forsake each other, and more than anything a friend can be trusted. Even when a friend criticizes you, he or she is doing so to help, protect, build you up and yes correct you when they and you know you are dead wrong. My point about identifying and relating to true friends is pretty much a very basic concept. It just happens to be spiritually based. When all hell is breaking loose in your life, will your friend (s) pray with you? Pray for you? Will your friend(s) suggest maybe

PAGE 17

Spiritual Speaking By James Washington you ought to have a talk with the Lord? Will he or she let you know where the answer lies for whatever ails you? Addiction? Greed? Pride? Promiscuity? Whatever? Even Job’s “fickled” friend knew where he should turn. “But if I were you, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before Him. He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted…” Job 5: 8-9. Now whatever you think about the motives of Job’s friends, you got to give them credit for knowing where to seek help. All I’m asking you is which one of your so called friends will point you in the right direction? I

pray you have several, although one will surely do. I can’t help but be reminded of Christ and the paralytic. Mark 2. Jesus Heals the Paralytic. I’m just moved to point out verse 5. “When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven.” This is mind boggling to me. Jesus healed somebody because his friends had faith. Can you believe that? The folk you hang out with may not be the folk who have faith in you. But the people who have faith, the ones who will take you and your problems to the Lord, are the ones He listens to; often times on your behalf. Now I do not know about you but, these are the

I MESSENGER

kind of friends I need. I also believe I have a couple in my life and I am very thankful for them. My question to you is can you identify those in yours. If you cannot, then understand you are the reason for this particular column. No one should go through life without a friend who will pray for you if not with you and let you know, that’s what you should be doing also. Mark 2 just lets us know that God pays attention to such things and values such friends. Their love for you acknowledges their faith in Him and I think He welcomes them for their faith and you for bringing it out in them. Now that’s something to shout about I think. But remember, if you do not have anyone in your life that fits this friend criterion… May God bless and keep you always.

He brings up things that happened months/years ago to remind me of what he says are my faults. It’s not just me; he gives his sister grief for dropping him when he was one and she was three. The show OPENS FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015 FROM 6:00PM UNTIL 8:00PM. THE EXHIBITION RUNS UNTIL FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2015. What’s Done Cannot be Undone revolves around the idea of forgiveness beyond its traditional definition, not only as emotional affection or religious ceremony. Just questions if trauma can be interpreted as a historical category and a productive force in the way that theorist Rebecca Comay suggests. Instead of enshrouding catastrophe with negativity, Comay negotiates foreclosure and reconciliation after Hegel. Can we treat absolution as a critical historical tool? Comay understands forgiveness as the only conceivable act that can come close to erasing transgression. If the future reverts to recode the past, if society can forgive, how can that change history?

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,

the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
