Well, I am in Selma and thousands are expected this weekend for the activities surrounding the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when over 600 gathered to March across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, only to be assaulted by those who were charged with protecting and serving. Congressman John Lewis, Amelia Boynton Robinson and Joanne Bland are three of the foot soldiers that I have had the honor of meeting. They stood, and spoke out in the fight to achieve voting rights for all citizens. Theirs wasn’t a popular or glamourous fight. Still it was necessary and while we gather to commemorate, we have to find some more fights to take on. Now there are some who would ask, “What good did it do?” And that’s a fair question when you look at the voting record of many African Americans. While I seize every opportunity to vote, there are others who wouldn’t vote if they knew their lives depended on that vote. Just like Harriet Tubman said she freed thousands of slaves and she would have freed thousands more if they only knew they were slaves. Well, if all of these millions of eligible voters had a clue, they would realize that the quality of their lives would be so much better if they did vote. A decade ago I traveled to Selma for the 40th anniversary. Talk about a history lesson! During that visit, I met Ms. Robinson and Ms. Bland and both shared their perspective on that time in history and the impact it had on them. I felt honored to be in their presence. They put their lives on the live to make this world a better place. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., talked about finding something that you would die for. It’s time for people started finding something to live for, instead of just existing. You don’t have to go to Selma to effect change, but it’s a good start! I’ll have plenty to share next week. Stay tuned.

JOHNSON: Children must be vaccinated

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Editor’s Note: This article is a reprint from last week, when inadvertently a portion was edited from the original copy. Here it appears in unedited version. Please forgive us for the oversight. In 1796, Edward Jenner propelled medical research and public health forward when he invented the first vaccine. Cowpox, a less deadly form of smallpox, infected milkmaids via sores on a cow’s body. Jenner correctly tested his hypothesis that a cowpox infection

could protect a person from smallpox. Until the true development and distribution of vaccines, epidemics such as whooping cough, smallpox, measles, yellow fever, and rubella had ravaged cities throughout the world. Even with Jenner’s discovery, the 1800s was a difficult time for public health. While the National Vaccine Agency was established in the United States in order to encourage individuals to vaccinate themselves in 1813, poor hygiene practices and the emergence of additional infectious diseases slowed the development of vaccines and increased global outbreaks. Two thirds of the soldiers who lost their lives in the American Civil War were killed by uncontrolled infectious diseases. Yellow fever crippled the Mississippi Valley while measles ravaged Native American tribes in Arizona. At the end of the century the U.S. faced its first polio epidemic. During the 1900s, vaccine research and development experienced significant progress. Scientists discovered methods for growing and treating viruses in the laboratory. Researchers not only created the first polio vaccine, they

were also able to focus on common infectious diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. U.S. law also backed vaccinations. In 1905, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of mandatory smallpox vaccines to preserve public health. By 1922, many schools required a smallpox vaccine before a child could attend. Because of vaccine research and routine immunizations, an infectious disease that was categorized as uncontrollable a century earlier was successfully eradicated. Since the implementation of vaccines, instances of whooping cough have decreased by 81 percent, measles by 99 percent, and mumps by 99 percent. While many countries still struggle with outbreaks of diseases eradicated from the U.S. decades ago, some in our country choose to forego the availability of state-of-the-art medicines and choose not to vaccinate their children. Ultimately, this jeopardizes the health of the general public. Just last month, visitors to Disneyland in California were exposed to measles, causing at least 100 cases identified by the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention. Unfortunately, parents who choose not to vaccinate their children are also making a choice for the individuals that their children contact. Herd immunity, an important benefit of widespread vaccination, helps to protect people who cannot be vaccinated because of age or preexisting medical conditions by ensuring that everyone they come in contact with is immunized. However, as more and more people refuse routine immunizations, the risk of outbreak is much worse. In 2014, the U.S. experienced the worst measles and whooping cough outbreaks in decades. As a non-practicing registered nurse, parent, and grandparent, I assure my constituents that the benefit of routine immunization is invaluable. Like any medical procedure, vaccines can carry some risks. However, the benefit of vaccines certainly outweighs the risks. The reality is that vaccines are the best defense we have against diseases that are both controllable and preventable. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

May Godmethods bless and keep you always… the with the objectives.

Ask Alma… Little brother working my last nerve Dear Alma, My little brother is getting on my last nerve. He is 32 and can’t seem to get it together. He is always calling me telling me how his water is about to be cut off or his car broke down and he doesn’t know how he’s gonna get to work. I get so tired of hearing about his money problems and I don’t know why he thinks I’m suppose to fix it. I have loaned him money forever. I save my money for emergencies and that’s what he should do, too. I just don’t know what to do. If I don’t help him, he will probably become homeless, lose his car and then his job and it would be worse. Sometimes I feel like all I do is fix his problems and I don’t even think he appreciates me. What would you suggest I do to make him more mature? — TiaMarie, Houston, Texas

Ask Alma

Oh my, my to the contrary TiaMarie, He is much more mature and smarter than you’re giving him credit for. He’s so smart he has you under his spell, dry-begging you towards feeling obligated to repair his despair, with your hammer, toolbelt and all. I’ve got a feeling it goes something like this: Him: Hey Sis, I don’t have enough money to pay my water bill this month. silence….crickets You: What! Boy imma pay it this time, but you better give me my money back!

Umhmm, am I close? He nudged you step, by step down that diving board and before you gave it a second thought, you opened your mouth and – bounce – dived right in. Once again, nominating yourself to be the one who’ll “fix” his problem. Oh wait, and now on top of all that, you’re angry at him for accepting your offer. Why, Miss Lilly Lifeguard? You’ve rescued him, again, albeit through his silently solicited salutations, LOL. Nothing will change until you say no, returning his responsibilities to him on a silver platter. Trust me on this one. After

that first no, it gets easier and easier. You might not like it, but I’m removing you from “Jesus” status. You’ll thank me later. I understand you’re doing what you think is best, but consider this – there’s a possibility you could be blocking his blessings, stunting his growth. If you’re the one always holding up an umbrella while yawl are walking in the rain, there’s no need for him to check the weather forecast. You get what I’m sayin? I know you love him, but do your brother a favor, exercise a spoon full of tough love and reel it in. Given the chance, he’ll find some “I can do it” nestled down in his own back pocket. Before long you and he both will be prouder than peach pie that he’s stepped up to the plate and is handlin’ his bidness! Alma

WASHINGTON: Pray on God’s Time, not yours If you’re like me, prayer is a subject that keeps popping up because sometimes out of sheer habit, I keep doing it. Intellectually I understand its purpose and its benefit. But sometimes I get lost in the reality of whom and under what circumstances, I’m moved to pray. It’s then that I want my prayers answered on my time, for my reasons, forgetting or not wanting to remember all things happen for a reason; God’s reason to be precise. On a recent Sunday, my pastor reminded me that God’s plan happens on God’s time and our job is to be open and ready for His answer to our prayers. Simply put, he said, delay is not denial. God answers all prayer in His time, in His way, with His power and for His purpose. That’s it and we need to learn how to deal with it. But as Christians when you think about it, God’s time, His will and power for His purpose is not so bad. As a matter of spiritual fact, we should prefer it that way even when we have the audacity to think we know what’s best for us. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts (higher) than yours.” Isaiah 55:8-9. First of all God answers all prayer in one of three ways: 1.) Yes, 2.) No, or 3.)

PAGE 11

Not now. The question is never can God answer. The real question is does your

communication should be between you and God. There is no disbelief for a child

Spiritual Speaking By James Washington faith acknowledge that you know that He can? One of the hardest things to reconcile is that there are times that God puts you in helpless impossible situations in order to let you know it’s all about Him. ”Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but he was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” These words… were written not for him alone, but also for us to whom God will credit righteousness for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.” Romans 4: 20-24. The more you read about and try to really comprehend prayer, the more you come away knowing how pure this

who believes in Santa Claus because his parents told him to. God keeps telling us to believe in Him. Can you? Do you really? “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24. Each and every time it comes down to that belief thing. Prayer always calls your faith into question. I sometimes pray for the faith that accesses the power of God. This is not ego on my part, but humility to ask that I might be a vessel empty enough of me to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I believe God’s grace will flow more freely and through me, His will, will be done. Wouldn’t you like to know that kind of power up close and personal in your own life? They couldn’t do something they thought they should have been able to. “He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20-21. Unfortunately, maybe fortunately, faith is tested each and every day. Most times I think we merely look at it as “life happens” and try to move on, get past it at least until life serves up the tragically impossible. Prayer comes to mind first when unwavering faith is called for. As I catch myself praying out of habit sometimes, I’m reminded it’s more about God and less about my circumstance. Put it in God’s hands and let it go. Believe me. I know personally that’s so much harder than it sounds. But my God said in His time, in His will, by His way and because of His power, it will be done. I’m just trying to take those words all the way to the bank. May God bless and keep you always.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
