Let’s score a win for HBCUs! Congresswoman Johnson 5
Cheryl Smith Next week Dallas will be filled with students, faculty, alumni and friends of Grambling State and Prairie View A&M Universities. It would be great to see the stadium filled to capacity with ticket holders who actually paid for their tickets! This Classic is one of the biggest in the country, among historically Black colleges and universities following behind the The Turkey Day Classic pitting Tuskegee University against Alabama State University is the oldest Black College football classic. Last year, the teams bringing in the largest attendance played in the Magic City Classic –Alabama A&M and Alabama State. According to reports, the top Classics over the years have been the Magic City Classic, followed by the Bayou Classic featuring Grambling Cecka Rose Trueblood Green State and Southern, then the Atlanta Classic between Florida A&M and Tennessee State or Southern. The Florida Classic between Bethune Cookman University and Florida A&M University is always a big draw also.

And those numbers don’t include the thousands that come into the various towns and never make it to the game. Still, they pump millions into the economy; like in Indianapolis for the Circle City Classic, where an estimated $20 million has been reported, or the Bayou Classic where more than $30 million and well more than 200,000 fans have been reported for the numerous activities surrounding the “game.” Now everyone knows that a good way to get alumni riled up about their alma maters is to start talking about the athletic teams or the bands. You’ll even hear some schools bragging about having the “finest” women. And if you talk to some of those diehard alumni, who are life members of their alumni associations, or belong to their booster clubs, you’ll hear them bragging about the number of National Merit Scholars, class valedictorians, SAT or ACT perfect scorers, graduates and successful alumni. Talk to any Black college alum and they will tell you that the “classics” are more than just football games. They are more like family reunions, complete with the cookouts (tailgate parties), fashion shows (some people shell out big bucks to come to the games decked out in the latest fashions as they parade around the venue), talent shows (Greek step shows) and of course, the trash talking card games (can you say “six no - downtown?).

Folks go shopping for an outfit to wear to the game and another outfit for the after parties! The competition between the bands is fierce. Now if a team is having a not so good year, you’ll hear fans commenting, “at least our band won halftime!” Now just as the students are told that they must focus on their education, while enjoying the HBCU experience, we can all admit that our HBCUs are in dire need of our support. FAMU Alum Cecka Rose Trueblood Green has sparked a fire among alumni and it’s a wonderful thing! In the wake of all the social media challenges, i.e.. The ice water bucket challenge; Cecka issued the FAMU 10 for 10 Challenge. Folks were encouraged to donate $10 to FAMU and challenge 10 others to do the same. In less than a month, more than $100,000 has been raised.

Next weekend when all the HBCU alums and friends are enjoying the festivities, at whatever game and in whatever city, I challenge each and every one who has felt the influence of an HBCU to drop $10. And also support the Tom Joyner Foundation. Allstate and the Tom Joyner Foundation are encouraging students, alumni and supporters of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country to recall the traditions, pride, and love they have for their HBCUs – and help keep them strong by participating in the Allstate Quotes for Education program in states where it’s available. For every person who receives an insurance quote from a participating Allstate agent between August 1 and Nov. 30, 2014, and mentions “Quotes for Education,” Allstate will donate $10 -up to a total donation of $200,000. These funds will be donated to the Tom Joyner Foundation and earmarked for general scholarship funds to assist students attending HBCUs.

Fantasia is fantastic!
Even before the question is posed, she makes clear the essence of her sound. “I’m a soul singer,” she says, with much pride and little hesitation. That’s who she is, at her core, and no matter the song she sings, her spirit seems to resonate from the speakers along with her voice. That’s the magic that Fantasia brings, every time.
At first listen, Side Effects of You might sound like an album about heartbreak and the process of piecing oneself back together. That’s true, in part, but if you have her tell it, there’s much more there. While the Grammywinning singer has certainly enjoyed chart-topping, triple-platinum and multi-platform success since winning season three of American Idol, she, like everybody, has made some mistakes, too. Though she has never shied away from being transparent in her music, she wasn’t necessarily thinking about putting her words into song when she picked up a pen and her blank notebook two years ago. “When I started writing in my book, I had a bittersweet taste in my mouth,” Fantasia says of how she was feeling – professionally, personally, emotionally – after putting in a decade’s worth of hard work. “I’d been doing one-off shows and not really recording, but when my doctor put me on bed rest, I decided to use that time to start writing down some of the things that were on my mind. If I was able to get to the grocery store, people would stop me in my Hoveround chair and tell me what they were going through, so I wrote about that, too.” It was only after she met (and vibed with) London-bred producer, Harmony Samuels, that she realized it might be time to get back in the studio. With her trusted notebook by her side, she would eventually co-write seven of the 13 songs that comprise Side Effects of You. “I’ve always wanted to collaborate with someone the way Michael Jackson did with Quincy Jones,” she says of joining forces with Harmony, who serves as album producer. “As soon as I heard the song, ‘Supernatural Love,’ I knew he was the one.”
Crafting this, her fourth album, was like a dream come true for Fantasia as she made it her mission to tap into the music that has inspired her over the years. “When I was growing up, we listened to so many different types of music in my house,” she remembers. “It started with gospel and then the blues because my grandfather loved B.B. King. Of course I loved listening to my girls Monica, Brandy, TLC and SWV, but I also played Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Bonnie Raitt and Queen. You can listen to any of those artists today because their music still stands and that’s what I wanted to do with this project. I want my music to be timeless.”
Leading the album out of the gate is “Lose to Win,” which she co-wrote alongside Andrea Martin over a sample of The Commodores’ classic, “Nightshift.” “This is my testimony,” Fantasia says of this ode to the power of understanding when to hold, and fold. “Andrea and I really connected and I wanted to deliver this song for her. She allowed me to switch a few things up, but we were both able to put our feelings into the song.” Fantasia followed up with the slow-bounce club banger, “Without Me,” featuring Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliott. The song, which she co-wrote with Al Sherrod Lambert, Kyle Stewart and Missy, set the blogosphere and urban radio ablaze in record time. She sings of the moment that the veil is lifted on an unbalanced relationship. Once Kelly and Missy chime in, there’s no avoiding their burning question – “Where’d you be, without me?” “I always love working with Missy and it broke my heart that she wasn’t a part of my last album. I wasn’t going to miss the opportunity this time. And Kelly? She killed her verse!” “End of Me” is a song so moving that it literally sweeps you off your feet. Co-written with Lambert and Amber Streeter, Fantasia sings of the type of love that is absolutely no good, but keeps calling you back, over and

over again. Who hasn’t been there? On “Change Your Mind,” co-written with Lambert, Fantasia tips her hat to the late Whitney Houston. When she sings, “Come home to me, baby, I’" be good to you, darling,” it’s so very reminiscent of Whitney’s 1990 hit, “I’m Your Baby Tonight” and that’s exactly how she wanted it.
Two words come to mind when she talks about “Get It Right” – rock soul. “When I say ‘rock,’ I’m thinking of Tina Turner and when I say ‘soul,’ it’s all about Aretha Franklin,” she says of the high-octane track which she cowrote with Streeter and Lambert. “With the live instruments, you get a Tina Turner/James Brown feeling and maybe even a little bit of Andre’ 3000’s ‘Hey Ya.’ When we were recording, I ran and grabbed everybody in the studio to sing with me. I love this song!” Then there’s the album’s title track. Produced by Naughty Boy and written by Emeli Sande’, Shahid Khan, Claudia Bryant and Ben Harrison, “Side Effects of You” is as haunting as it is vivid when it comes to the business of releasing someone who has wrecked havoc on you. “This song is the truth,” Fantasia says, “but it’s also kind of tricky because it’s about a man and medication. At first, I’m singing about him like he’s what I needed, but in the end, I flip it like he was actually the drug.” As for choosing this ballad as the title track, she explains that the song’s sentiments also relate to life, in general. “Everybody’s been hurt and the pain can be caused by family, friends and in my case, the industry, too. When I sing this song, I’m telling everybody who has ever done or said anything to hurt me that these are the side effects of you. Yes, this song is the truth!” Back in 2004, on the night of May 26, a then-19-year-old Fantasia Barrino stepped onto the American Idol stage and won top honors. After wowing television audiences with her vocal talent, the North Carolina native released her debut album, Free Yourself, which featured as its first single, “I Believe,” a song that made her the first
artist in Bi"board history to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 chart. Her second single, “Truth Is,” would later hold the #1 spot on the charts for 14 weeks. During 2006, she released her New York Times bestselling memoir, Life Is Not a Fairytale, starred as her younger self in the Lifetime movie of the same name and by year’s end, released her second album, entitled, simply, Fantasia, which included the hit single, “When I See U.” What followed were the coveted role of Celie in Broadway’s The Color Purple (for which she won a Theater World Award), a guest spot on The Simpsons and a two-season run of the VH1 reality series, Fantasia For Real. During the summer of 2011, she released her third album, Back to Me, which featured the Grammy-winning single, “Bittersweet.” To date, she’s sold nearly three million records and 1.5 million digital tracks, domestically. Looking toward the near future, she will expand her musical repertoire even further when she joins classical singer, Andrea Bocelli, for his world tour in summer 2013. Each of her experiences have contributed to who she is as an artist and also, as an inspiration to the next generation of performers whom are listening to each note she hits and watching her ascension. As she continues on her creative journey, she’s still has more learning and growing to do and many more songs to sing. What remains constant is that she loves music, she knows music, and she always sings from her heart, with all of her soul. So, how does she feel about her latest work now that it’s out in the world, for all to hear? “I know that every artist says that their albums are like their babies, but Side Effects of You really is my baby,” Fantasia says with a laugh. “Besides the music, this album means so much to me because it represents the amazing creative relationships I made and the thoughts and ideas that were spoken into my life during the recording process. This project came together right in the nick of time.”

STEM and the future By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson The study of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses by American students is crucial to our country’s economy and our standing in the world as a global innovator. Students who master one of those disciplines are likely to find high-paying jobs when they complete their undergraduate and graduate education. Financially, they will do much better than students who pursued non-STEM related degrees, according to most economic forecasters. There was once a time when our country ranked at the very top of the list of nations whose students were proficient in the hard sciences. Today, however, we rank 21st in math proficiency and 25TH in the hard sciences. Once we also led the world in the annual number of college graduates. Today, however, there are 17 countries that graduate more students each year than we do from colleges and universities. The future for our students revolves around technology. And we must insist that they receive the
academic training that will ensure their financial futures, and allow our country to regain its preeminence in science and technology. Earlier this year President Obama stated that America must move from the middle to the very top in STEM education. He challenged our nation’s educators to produce 100,000 STEM instructors during a ten-year period, who will teach science, technology, engineering and math. I fully support the position taken by our president. I believe that our institutions of higher learning must get involved in the efforts to train and graduate more STEM educators, and help us to locate those 100,000 teachers that the president has requested. Parents of young people play a critical role as their children are taught STEM related disciplines. At home, students must receive encouragement that they can be successful studying courses that some students perceive as too difficult and boring. Our students must be taught that everything in life that brings rewards will necessitate hard work and discipline.
The journey that they embark upon will not be easy in the beginning, but it will bear much fruit in their futures. In addition to federal efforts, a number of states are promoting STEM education to ensure that they have work forces that are capable of meeting the challenges of our ever-changing technological environment. In Texas, for instance, 91 public and private institutions have been designated by the state as TSTEM academies, which are middle and senior high schools that concentrate on preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The academies, which are located throughout the state- including the 30th Congressional District-, are dedicated to increasing the number of students that excel in STEM subjects, and who pursue careers in a related field. It goes without saying that STEM related study and proficiency will be greatly needed in the future. It is necessary for our children and our country. Technology touches all of our lives. Our school systems must encourage students to pursue STEM coursework. If we do not, the future will not be as bright as it could have been.

Generally when we think of or hear the terms “merger and acquisition, partnerships or collaboratives”, we think of corporate entities who have combined forces to create a new and formidable enterprise. But apparently that memo never reached the desk of the United Methodist Church and Reverend Richie L Butler. This tandem evidently thought those terms related to the Church.

Mergers and acquisitions may sound new to the church, but that’s really what it’s always been about. That’s Church Business!!

The St. Paul United Methodist Church recently celebrated 141 years of witness and ministry in the Dallas community. completed extended studies at MIT in Urban Planning, and was a Ford Foundation Fellow. Butler’s vitae, which merged Theology and Urban Planning, fuses the best of both worlds; the Church and the Community. The Reverend Richie Butler is one of the most insightful and committed young ministers in this nation. A former SMU's football standout, he studied theology at Harvard University with one of his mentors, Dr. Michael Walker. Dr. Walker, coincidently, was a child prodigy and product of Dallas himself, who was licensed at the historic Salem Institutional Baptist Church of Dallas. Salem Baptist and so many other of our historic churches in Dallas have been able to survive the migration of AfricanAmericans into integrated communities. This historic and !

In the second of a series of town hall meetings, Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Dallas Police Chief David Brown talked candidly about issues facing law enforcement officials and the communities they serve. As in the previous town hall meeting at St. Paul United Methodist Church, citizens came looking for answers. Addressing topics such as excessive force by police officers, citizen rights to view tapes of crime scenes and dealing with the mentally ill, in a two-hour meeting, Dallas’ chief law enforcement heads expressed sympathy to the relatives and loved ones of murdered citizens while encouraging cooperation and support. In the meeting, which was co-moderated by Friendship-West Senior Pastor Frederick D. Haynes III and Communications Director Debbie Denmon, citizens expressed a special interest in having police officers living in the communities they serve. A MESSAGE TO MY SISTERS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE By Dr. E. Faye Williams

Washington, DC – Dr. E. Faye Williams, National President of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. has said the following with respect to not only the Ray Rice incident, but about domestic violence in general: “Several times in recent weeks I have written about domestic violence. It’s wrong to denigrate any woman in my book, but I am especially alarmed by the increase of denigration and violence by law enforcement, gangsta rappers, athletes and others against women. Each time it happens, I wonder what could happen next.
The tragedy is that the violence continues, and too often it is against Black women. Abusers seem to never learn that it is not okay to punch someone out because you disagree with something the person has said or done. It’s not okay to show off as to who controls your partner or wife. It’s especially egregious when the person is someone you profess to love or any woman who is pregnant as in the most recent case in San Francisco with Ray McDonald. Michael Vick received greater punishment for abusing a dog than many abusers are receiving for what they do to Black women. My heart is heavy as I hear Ray Rice’s spouse try to relieve her husband of responsibility by taking some of the responsibility upon herself when she is the one who was knocked unconscious. It is quite likely Rice is blaming her, too, which puts her in even more danger around him now that he has been relieved of his job with the NFL. Even though I have seen the major networks use anybody but Black women to talk about domestic violence of the type we have been witnessing lately, as a Black woman, one who has been abused at the hand of a spouse, I know how hard it is to see a Black man punished, but I have a message to my sisters and would say to my sisters who decide not to have abusers prosecuted, this is not the way to resolve such barbaric treatment. We must begin to speak out no matter who the abuser is. Too many Black women who’ve loved the men in their lives through thick and thin have swept this problem under the rug for too long. We must rise up and fight against anyone who abuses us– physically, verbally or mentally. It isn’t worth it to protect abusers. We risk our own lives when we do. If they abused you once, chances are high that they will do it again—and the next time is often worse. Sisters, let us come together and decide we are just not going to take it anymore. Let us be there for one another and help each other to overcome the fear of leaving abusers. I love men, but I hate abusers. We cannot continue to just let it go.” Dr. E. Davis, FACHE, and invocation by Cheryl Wesley, First Lady of Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, the audience was treated to musical entertainment by national recording artist Erica Lane. Marilyn Mansfield, author, certified personality trainer, and wife of Methodist President and CEO Stephen L. Mansfield, PhD, FACHE, served as mistress of ceremonies. Rising African-American Filmmaker makes the Cut in HBO’s Project Greenlight
HOLLYWOOD, CA – After spending several years trying to break into Hollywood, working on shows like the CW's "Everybody Hates Chris" and VH1's "Flavor of Love," North Carolina native, Shequeta Smith, recently beat out thousands of filmmakers to become one of the Top 20 finalists in HBO’s “Project Greenlight” Competition. The newly revived Project Greenlight, HBO’s filmmaking documentary series, will be executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, executive producers of the original two seasons. Smith submitted a video bio in addition to a teaser trailer for her upcoming feature film, "The Gestapo vs. Granny”; a comedy set inside of a retirement home that tells the story of Agnes Monroe, a cranky senior citizen who has infamously been kicked out of eighteen retirement homes. A North Carolina State Alum, Smith first got the idea to become a screenwriter after an English professor
suggested it after reading a play that she authored freshman year. Shortly after graduating, Smith relocated to Los Angeles. Since then, she’s participated in writing programs at both UCLA and USC and has been selected into multiple film festivals with her short films. "I just want to create smart and fun movies that take viewers on a roller coaster ride of emotions, whether
they’re laughing or crying -- or crying from laughing." says Smith. Though beating out thousands to become the only African-American Top 20 finalist is impressive, Smith will have to make it as a Top 10 finalist in order to guarantee a spot on the HBO television series. The Top 20 voting round started on Monday, September 15, 2014 and lasts until Friday, September 26, 2014.
The one video that receives the most votes from the Project Greenlight community during the voting period will be automatically included into the final Top 10. Pride go before the fall By James A. Washington I find myself being blessed in the fact that I have several places of worship that feed my hunger for the Word. There was a time when church hopping was my modus operandi only because I was not yet settled in my spirit. Nowadays, I just know so many churches and ministers, pastors and associate pastors where the Word is served by gifted men and women called to preach. Yes, I do have a church home (two in different cities as a matter of fact) and know whenever I choose to, a powerful message will be received in a multiplicity of places. Each is unique and each has a loyal following. I guess I’m just fortunate, as we all are, to know on any given Sunday, one’s spiritual hunger can be satisfied. This is important to me because I used to believe the pulpit was a place for hypocrites to shine and generate false praise from members more interested in looking good than actually working for the Lord. I had intellectualized myself out of the kingdom and for the most part, had convinced me that I could stay connected without being connected. I must admit that this was the single biggest reason I stayed out of church. Satan had won this battle and used my own unsaved spirit to take me down.

Spiritually Speaking Once I got past the pulpit and into the Word, my life changed and continues to evolve. If you’re open to it, the Word of God shows up in all kinds of places through all kinds of people and circumstances. I am often amazed at how confused I was to believe that the message was going to be given by a perfect person, heard by a perfect people, in a perfect congregation. Underneath it all, my own arrogance and pride had somehow allowed me to believe just maybe, I was better than some, a cut above others and smarter than most. When I think about it now, it can disgust me. No wonder the devil felt like his job was done. My good news is I’m saved today in the knowledge that I am better than no one and more flawed than many. I am not more worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice than I am of the
love of the Almighty. I’m just thankful to be in the family. As such, I’ve enjoyed having my eyes opened to see great things happening in the name of church after church from prison ministries, to back packs for children who need them for school, from programs feeding the hungry to helping folk pay their rent just to name a few. When you investigate and seek God’s Word, you find whole communities of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Now I realize the power inherent in the truth.

The simplicity of this amazes me. God’ goodness and grace are everywhere. The view can be clouded because we tend to see things from the inside looking out, rather than from God’s point of view looking from the outside in. Remember, we are His creation and He knows what He put in all of us. May God bless and keep you always.

Ambitious man not ready for baby Dear Alma: I am a 25-yearold man. I consider myself very nice and caring. I live with a woman I met in February of this year. Things do not seem to be working out. I feel that I have been giving all that I can give. It has not helped that some of my life goals did not happen this year. I wanted to go back and work on a Ph.D. in economics, but I can’t. You’ve come to the conclusion that she isn’t the one for you, and that’s fine. But you do owe it to her and your child to have the best friendship the two of you can create. Black chambers convene in Dallas for 14th annual conference AUSTIN – The Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce (TAAACC) will host its 14th Annual Conference September 18-19, 2014 at Dallas’s Crowne Plaza Downtown (1015 Elm Street, Dallas, TX). “Our theme this year – We’re Working Hard for You – aptly describes our organization’s approach to our mission,” said TAAACC Chairman Jim Wyatt. “We have taken the message of opportunity to each quadrant of our state on behalf of Texas’ nearly 200,000 Black businesses. This year’s conference program will both highlight our successes and prepare attendees for the challenges ahead.” Among conference highlights this year is the “Texas Economic Forecast,” delivered by Washington, DC-based economist William Cunningham. “William compiled his forecast for us last year and his presentation was one of the biggest hits of last year’s conference,” said Wyatt. “We are certainly looking forward to see and hear
what his projections will mean for Black-owned businesses in Texas. He is truly a remarkably talented professional, and his insights on both the economy and the use of crowdfunding as a tool for capital development are on the cutting edge.
