Organized and hosted by Texas State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), the event was very inspiring and thought-provoking. Citizens of all ages joined in the March and we heard from speakers, young and old.

There was music that told the stories of struggles in America and there was talk of hope, love and equality.

It felt so good to be out participating with my people in Dallas, because just earlier this month, actually two months ago, I was in Selma, Alabama with people from all across the country and around the world.

I’m sure there were students who knew nothing of the struggle for voting rights, but they got a history lesson that day.

And we need more history lessons, like the ones that will be shared at the celebration commemorating the naming of a street in honor of theHonorable Al Lipscomb, on April 11 in Dallas, and a visit to Dallas from Dr. Leonard Jeffries and Professor James Small on April 25 at the Frederick Douglass Social Center.

Dallas, TX - Despite a forecast of rain and threatening skies, several hundred students and their parents turned out Saturday - March 21, 2015 at the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Dallas to commemorate the historic march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.

peaceful demonstrators. The 54-mile march was successfully completed under a federal court order and the protection of some 4,000 federal troops and state police. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law less than five months later.

The students answered the call of State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) to reenact the historic march that was held 50 years ago in protest of restrictive voting laws.

Following the march, Taylor Jenkins, a Skyline High School student, said she took advantage of the right to vote and voted for the first time last November. She added, "Selma sparked change and got the Voting Right Act, yet many adults are eligible to vote but don't. You need to encourage your peers to vote."

Before the march started, Troop 1269 Boy Scout Christopher Harrison told the group, "While I was not born then, I understand the importance of their seeking our right to vote. That non-violent movement was met with violence. I hope for a world of equality."

Senator West thanked the crowd for not letting the threat of rain keep them from taking part in the march.

"This is the time to remember the heroes and sheroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on Bloody Sunday 50 years ago."

With the backdrop of the Dallas skyline, the students marched across the mile long bridge and back carrying signs that said; When will we overcome?...One dream can change the world...Together we can-They did...Taking a stand.

The students symbolically reenacted the successful March 21, 1965 march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol in Montgomery. It was the third attempt following the first march, now called "Bloody Sunday," two weeks earlier when state and local lawmen attacked

If the leaders of the Civil Rights (Movement)and specifically the youth who encouraged this march 50 years ago let little issues worry them, today wouldn't be possible."

Schools from Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville and Cedar Hill districts participated including Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy, St. Philip's School and Community Center, Skyline HS, West Mesquite HS, A. Maceo Smith, Sunset, Pinkston, Woodridge Elem., Cedar Hill Collegiate HS, DeSoto HS, Duncanville HS, Lancaster HS, Wilmer-Hutchins HS, and Townview Magnet Center. Youth groups taking part in the march included South Oak Cliff High's Mayor's Rising Star Council, Circle 10 Boy Scouts of America, and the Boys and Girls Club of Arlington.

JOHNSON: Time for Doris “Dorie” Miller

The effort to have the Medal of Honor posthumously awarded to Doris “Dorie” Miller has, in recent weeks, been joined by university presidents, mayors, newspaper publishers, pastors, elected officials, leaders of veteran’s organizations and everyday men and women across this country who believe that a horrible historical oversight that continues to deny the nation’s highest military honor to a deserving hero must be corrected.

It is a well-known fact that Dorie Miller manned a machine gun during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

It is not widely known that he risked his life to save the lives of others on the U.S.S. West Virginia.

He also assisted the mortally wounded captain of the ship, Mervyn S. Bennion.

The ship’s captain was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.

The senior surviving officer of the U.S.S. West Virginia wrote in his official report that Dorie Miller’s actions on the day of the attack were heroic. Commander Hollenkoetter noted that Dorie Miller saved the lives of a “number of people who might otherwise have been lost.”

Despite Commander Hollenkoetter’s report, the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, recommended against awarding the Medal of Honor to Dorie Miller. A group of historians have discovered that Secretary Knox only wanted to give Dorie Miller a letter of commendation for his actions. It was

only after President Roosevelt and Admiral Chester Nimitz intervened that Dorie Miller received the Navy Cross.

Many observers knew then, as they know now, that the treatment of Dorie Miller was unfair. As early as 1942, Michigan Congressman John Dingell, Sr. introduced legislation asking that Dorie Miller be awarded the Medal of Honor. When he died in 1955 his son, John Dingell Jr. succeeded him in Congress and continued his father’s effort on behalf of Dorie Miller.

Other members of Congress who have attempted to have the Medal of Honor awarded to Dorie Miller include Texas Representatives Jake Pickle, Barbra Jordan, Mickey Leland and Craig Washington.

It is something that I have attempted to do since the time that I became a member of the House of Representatives in 1993.

The president of the Orders and Medals Society of America, Retired Army Colonel Fred L. Borch, said that the Medal of Honor is awarded to those

who demonstrate heroism in combat.

They must have demonstrated “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty,” Borch said.

Certainly the actions of Dorie Miller on that sad and fateful day in December of 1941 were intrepid, gallant and above and beyond the call of duty. Given the option of remaining safe in America or going back to sea, Dorie Miller chose the latter. He lost his life in 1943 when his ship was struck by a Japanese torpedo.

I, like many others, passionately believe that Dorie Miller should be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service to our nation.

Because of his heroic actions he deserves nothing less.

Now is the time to recognize his contribution.

Soap Star Chrystee Pharris is Queen of Drama with New Faithbased Indie Film, Film Fest Tour and POP-TV Docu-Series

Atlanta, GA - Soap star Chrystee Pharris has successfully positioned herself as a true 'queen of drama' in Hollywood. Not only is she starring in the family faithbased film, "Steps of Faith," with Ted Lange ("Love Boat") and Irma P. Hall ("Soul Food"), Pharris will also impact the small screen as part of an all-star cast on POP TV's new reality docu-series "Queens of Drama." "Queens of Drama" will air right after the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on April 26, 10:00 p.m.

She has hit the stage in Ted Lange's "Let Freedom Ring" with SNL's Garrett Morris and will again be performing in Lange's "Lady Patriot," production October 2 through October 4, 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee at Fisk University.

"I have always known that I wanted to be an actress since I was four years old," divulges Pharris. "My experience in Hollywood has been truly a blessed journey. I credit three people with giving me the knowledge that I still use today.

First is Steve Harvey who I met years ago as an intern while working on the set of "Young and the Restless." He gave me a 45-minute lecture about sustaining my integrity in the world of acting. Second is Brad Lemack my professor at Emerson College who taught me the business of acting that has served me to this day. And lastly is Dr. Kenneth C. Ulmer, my pastor at Faithful Central Bible Church. He directed me on the importance of being a blessing and encouraging others on my journey as an actress."

In "Steps In Faith," directed by M. Legend Brown, Pharris plays the lead character, Faith, and stars alongside Ted Lange, Irma P. Hall, Charles Malik Whitfield ("One Life to Live") and Tracey Ross ("Passions"). The film is about a young woman who is not a church girl, but feels like she hears God tell her to move and work with children and animals, neither of which she likes. When she shares her vision with family they mock her. In the feature, we witness her fighting through her own fears to complete the mission God has called her to do.

"Understanding my calling in the business is what has taken me far as well," Pharris adds. "Bishop Ulmer helped me to realize that I was on set to be a blessing, to encourage others. And that is what I have done over the years. I now work with actors around the world teaching my "The Business of Acting" workshops at colleges, seminars, and to individuals. I want the next generation to have more wisdom and confidence and to be fearless. I hope to use my current film and new television series as vehicles to continue to inspire others."

"Steps of Faith" has been accepted into 16 film festivals and is available on DVD. With her "Business of Acting" workshop she is presenting at several of the screenings, Pharris teaches participants how to get work without an agent, how to build relationships with producers and directors, and how to market oneself.

Fort Worth Independent School District Scholarship Program The United Negro College Fund and employees of the Fort Worth Independent School District are pleased to announce a scholarship program that is open to spring 2015 Fort Worth ISD graduating seniors who will attend a UNCF member college/university or another historically black college or university (HBCU).

Requirements: • Student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

• Student must be a 2014–2015 graduating senior from a Fort Worth ISD high school.

• Student must be enrolled full-time at a UNCF member institution or other historically black college or university.

Scholarships Scholarships up to $5,000 will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and academic potential. Students must submit an essay as part of their application. The scholarship award will be sent to the Financial Aid/ Scholarship office at the student’s UNCF/other campus upon proof of enrollment.

The Grass is Greener UNT Mayborn School of Journalism dean plants seeds with high school newsroom visit

The dean of the University of North Texas Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism, Bland advised students on journalism-related workshops offered by the university as she encouraged them to seek admission to UNT. Students asked various questions about studies at UNT and expressed excitement about meeting Bland and learning about the opportunities she shared.

“I think it was a unique experience. It’s not every day that you get to have a dean in your classroom, and she was very outgoing,” student Maria Lempke said.

Lempke is a senior at Wakeland High School who plans to study at UNT in the Fall.

During the visit, Bland toured the entire Frisco ISD-TV suite, taking photos and recording video of the facilities of which she was impressed.

“I plan to take this back to share with my faculty.

They’re not going to believe this, “ Bland said.

Frisco ISD-TV Executive Producer Eva Coleman coordinated the visit and saw it as a way to fortify the bridge between high school and collegiate-level learning.

“It’s one thing to hear or read about studying media at the college level. For a top college leader to want to come into the high school classroom to engage students, that’s clearly on a different level,” Coleman said.

“I push my students to go beyond the norm and I have to do that with the opportunities I provide them as well. Dean Bland is special, and it was evident during her time with us.”

Several of Coleman’s former students have continued their media studies at UNT. Some have even graduated and are currently working in the journalism field. Of special note are UNT alum Matthew Torres who is a morning reporter for WTVF NewsChannel 5, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, Tennessee and Millicent Macena, current North Texas Television (NTTV) Program Director.

Prior to coming to UNT, Bland directed Florida A&M University’s Division of Journalism — the first accredited journalism program at a historically AfricanAmerican university — for five years. Her accomplishments include leading a successful reaccreditation for the division in spring 2008 and 2012; securing an annual commitment for ScrippsHoward Foundation Internship/Scholarship Grants for two FAMU students beginning in 2011; and working with CBS News, FAMU journalism alumni and others to establish the Harold Dow Professorship, named in honor of the award-winning “48 Hours” correspondent who died in August 2010.

“While I appreciate my FAMU experiences, leading the Mayborn School of Journalism is a wonderful opportunity,” Bland said. “I understand that UNT’s theme is a Green Light to Greatness, and the Mayborn School has a strong foundation plus excellent potential for more greatness. It is strategically located in the fifth largest media market in the nation and a diverse region well positioned for future growth.”

Bland praised the school’s annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference as a “national treasure” and also the school offering a full complement of student media and student-run advertising/public relations and photo/multimedia agencies.

At FAMU, Bland led campaigns to raise more than $100,000 to support the National Association of Black Journalists Multimedia Short Courses from 2009 to

2012 and the Dow Jones News Fund Multimedia High School Workshops in 2010 and 2012. She was the interim advisor for both the FAMU chapter of the Association of Black Journalists, which was named Student Chapter of the Year in 2008 and was a finalist in 2009, and the FAMU chapter of Public Relations Society of America.

Bland also served FAMU as a member of the Retention Council, the Web Site Steering Committee and the Search Committee for the Assistant Vice President for Instructional Technology, and was the subcommittee chair of the university’s Organizational Analysis Task Force.

She has served on site teams for the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications at universities in California, Georgia, Kansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi and other states.

Bland was also a juror for the Pulitzer Prizes and a guest lecturer at the Poynter Institute, Kuwait University and other institutions.

Before coming to FAMU, Bland worked in various newspaper positions for 25 years. She was a reporter and editor at USA Today. She served as president and publisher of both the Chillicothe (Ohio) Gazette and Fort Collins (Colo.) Coloradoan and earned three Gannett President’s Rings for outstanding performance.

Bland received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Arkansas State University and her master of business administration degree in marketing from George Washington University. She was a McCormick Fellow in the Advanced Executive Program at Northwestern University’s Media Management Center and has completed additional graduate courses at

Florida State University.

Established in 2009, the Mayborn School of Journalism includes the Department of News

The school also houses the free-standing Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, which administers the only nationallyaccredited professional master’s degree program at a Texas college or university. The institute was founded in 1999 after UNT received a gift from the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn Foundation.

Frank W. Mayborn was the longtime editor, publisher and owner of the Temple Daily Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald in Central Texas and owner of KCEN-TV, Temple’s NBC affiliate. After her husband’s death in 1987, Sue Mayborn assumed his duties as editor, publisher and owner of the Temple Daily Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald.

She also served as owner and president of KCEN-TV until 2009.

Buckner Family Hope Center empowers low-income families with free Community Health Fair Buckner International’s Wynnewood Family Hope Center in South Dallas is opening their doors to the community to promote health awareness for families on Friday, March 27 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the center located at 2006 Didsbury Circle.

Free services to the community include mammograms, blood pressure checks, HIV testing, dental screens, cholesterol, diabetes, immunizations, and asthma screenings.

To promote the center’s mission of community and family development, representatives from Parkland Hospital, Community Dental Care, Urban League of Greater Dallas, WellCare, Children on the Mend, iMed Health Training Center, Dallas County Health and

Human Services, and the Dallas Police Department will present families with educational materials regarding information about the various services they offer.

“Our hope is that through community collaboration and support we can come together and help guide families toward good health while empowering them with education and resources,” said Cheryl Williams, director of the Wynnewood Family Hope Center. “We were thrilled to have our community’s backing as multiple health care professionals unite services under one roof for the purpose of strengthening families.”

The Wynnewood Family Hope Center cares for more than 120 vulnerable children in Dallas through after-school and summer day camp services. The goal of the program is to address each child’s unique needs with love and compassion, creating a safe learning environment for children to grow in character and self-confidence.

HALL: No Party Favors!

The odyssey and obstruction orbiting a pending Senate confirmation of Loretta Lynch as the next Attorney General was making me ill.

Politics is politics, but when you add in race, it takes on a different dimension. Since the inauguration service which placed that synthetic scepter in the bronzed hands of America’s first African-American President, the world has come to realize how much race plays into every definition and every decision in America. Loretta Lynch is just another story in “The Naked City.” (Google it!!)

Even the ultra-liberal talking heads have tried to skirt the racial aspect of this stupid ploy by the Republican Party.

Many deny race as a factor. I ran across an article in the New York Daily News that confirming for me that the undercurrents of racism are as farreaching and flagrant as always.

“A 10-year-old girl was trying to have a birthday party and a race relations discussion broke out.

African-American child Harmony Jones invited a friend to her party on Friday night in Memphis, Tenn., but the young girl got a stunning magic marker note in return: her friend’s dad wouldn’t let her attend due to the birthday girl’s race, WREG-TV reported.

The unidentified child wrote in blue, green and pink, “Maby [SIC] I will not be able to come to your birthday sleepover, because my dad will not let me go because you are black.”

Harmony’s unfortunate story mentally tethered me to a story I had seen by Rachel Maddow about the “lynching” of Loretta. Rachel Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar whose reports and reporting are always academic and well excavated.

Here’s my thumbnail sketch of the 10 minute plus feature she ran.

By the time this missive is published, Loretta Lynch may have been confirmed and this may be obsolete. But the issue of race has no expiration date and it ain’t been no party or party favors for Loretta Lynch or Harmony Jones.

I’ve read your books, “Dreams from My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope” and I’ve had the honor of voting for you in two Presidential elections. I clearly remember your campaign themes, “Change” and “Yes We Can.” The focus of this letter, Mr. President, has shifted from justice and equal rights to voting rights and race relations until I finally settled on the simple matter of citizenship.

The more I contemplated the essential principles of citizenship the more I realized it was something very important that I often overlooked.

I listened to the attacks against the validity of your citizenship in your first Presidential election and slowly began to understand the gravity of the matter and magnitude of the somewhat obscure title of ‘citizen’ that I once took for granted. It was hard to watch and harder to believe the venomous nature of the public assaults against one individual and one family over this issue.

It occurred to me that citizenship applied is a very potent and powerful tool, however, citizenship denied renders one essentially impotent, a mere spectator relegated to the bleachers of society, stripped of any real opportunity to get in the game.

Thus, the opponent will go to great lengths to obstruct your self-view as that awesome thing, a citizen.

It was from this realization that I decided to begin an active and ongoing letter writing campaign requiring of me vigilance and awareness and disallowing any degree of apathy or any notion of defeat.

As a citizen, I have something to believe in when the system fails.

When the government slows down, shuts down or falls short of the ideals upon which the nation was formed, I have something to cling to.

I have the right and responsibility to observe, critique and make my voice heard and by standing in the dignity and authority of my citizenship, I begin to realize and embody the audacity of hope you speak of so eloquently.

Sir, I hear your voice more clearly now, and as you speak to the nation and to the world on the compelling

When I think of Change it occurs to me that perhaps America’s star would shine brighter if we were a nation of justice rather than simply a nation of laws. Our democracy might ring more true if we substituted marching and celebrating decades long struggles with robust prosecution of civil and human rights violations and abuses, present and past.

We might find the playing field more level if we demanded effective legislation and judicial review of unfair institutional practices. The sound of our nation might play less dissonant and more harmonious if we removed hate speech from the protection of the First Amendment.

We might have more peace in the streets if more Police Officers were Peace Officers first-and-foremost, committed to protect and serve the community.

Mr. President, if our youth felt empowered by their own citizenship that in principle renders them visible rather than invisible, audible rather than silent, I believe they would take ownership of this American experiment and protect it with their voices, their votes and their lives.

Finally Sir, we adults must begin to see one another as citizens and view one another as equal under the framework of our Constitution regardless of race, creed, gender, or economic status.

If we do not, the math will never add up, the experiment will never work.

If we refuse to treat one another as valued equals, as brothers and sisters and as fellow Americans without hesitation or reservation, another trigger will be pulled and another body will lie dead in the street, and then another, and another.

Hundreds of teachers, administrators, public officials and parents on Saturday attended the Congressional District 30 Education Initiative held at Desoto High School in Desoto.

The summit, featuring presentations by some of the finest educators in North Texas, was convened by District 30 Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and included educators from the Desoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill, Dallas, Duncanville and Grand Prairie Independent School Districts.

“Early childhood education is very important,” said Congresswoman Johnson as she addressed the group during the keynote address. “We must ensure that our young people are welleducated. Without a quality education a young person’s future is bleak. I am your voice in Washington, but I need your input.

Early childhood education is the key to future success.”

Congresswoman Johnson said that she would continue to do all that she could to ensure that North Texas school districts received the financial support that they needed to make early childhood education a top priority.

She thanked the educators and public officials for what they were doing to promote early childhood education.

WASHINGTON: Forgiven and Forgive I am re-reading a book that I highly recommend by Beth Moore, Jesus, the One and Only. It reminds me rather vigorously that forgiveness is still a critical concept in the life of so many so called Christians, who profess faith as their spiritual cornerstone. The book is turning my soul inside out because it vividly reinforces to me that I am getting prayer answered with each chapter and that realization is the impetus for this column. Back to forgiveness!

How many of you repent, but remain in a guilty state of mind because you really don’t believe God will forgive you your acknowledged transgressions? If there was ever a challenge to faith, this is it. Deep down inside, you can’t really live a life of spiritual freedom, because you have never thought God would really forgive you for all that ‘sinnin’ you used to do and sometimes miss, even today. I bring this up because I believe you and I are dealing with another clever trick of the devil. If you really don’t believe you’ve been forgiven, you keep asking God to forgive you.

Your testimony takes shape and your words are then shaped around the blessing that is Jesus Christ. Reread Luke and the tears that washed the Savior’s feet. “Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved so much…” Luke 7:47.

The answer to your being able to forgive yourself lies not within you but within the One who has already forgiven you.

But what does voting â&#x20AC;&#x153;noâ&#x20AC;? and voting â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? mean?

It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers.

Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
