Omegas believe in service With over 2000 registered members attending, with Cheryl Smith their wives and family members, and other sororities and fraternities, an anticipated 5,000 or more visitors to the Metroplex will join the member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. for their four-day District 9 Meeting at the Dallas Downtown Sheraton Hotel.

The Mighty 9th District is comprised of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

An on-going community service project for the public service organization, that was founded in 1911, is a project in the host city, Dallas.

This year, the fraternity members partnered with Dallas City Councilwoman Carolyn R. Davis for the Community Clean Up - MLK Beautification Project annual Spring Clean-up of the Martin Luther King area, 2822 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

More than 150 members of the fraternity showed up to mow grass, clip hedges and pick-up and remove trash and debris, among other duties.

Wilton Munnings is basileus (president) of the Dallas Chapter, Theta Alpha, and also president of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, which sits on the same side of the street and one block away from the Martin Luther King Center.

Munnings and his chapter members joined their brothers for the clean-up.

The host chapter for the conference is the Omicron Gamma Gamma Chapter in Arlington, TX Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college.

Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, -- Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just.

From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, "friendship is essential to the soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.

Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

On November 23, 1911 in Thirkield Hall, Love became the first Grand Basileus (National President).

Cooper and Coleman were selected to be the Grand Keeper of the Records (National Secretary) and Grand Keeper of Seals (National Treasurer), respectively. Eleven Howard University undergraduate men were selected to be the charter members.

Today, Omega Psi Phi now has over 700 chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Korea, Japan, Liberia, Germany, and Kuwait.

There are many notable Omega Men recognized as leaders in the arts, the sciences, academics, athletics, business, civil rights, education, government, and science sectors at the local, national and international level.

Former Grand Basileus Warren G. Lee Jr. lives in Dallas. Other noted locals who are members of the organization include: State Sen. Royce West, businessmen Albert Black and Charles O’Neal, Dr. Larry Lundy, Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Clarence Hill, Dallas ISD School Board Trustee Lew Blackburn, and NBC-5’s Newy Scruggs.

13.9% of Young People Out of Work in March Washington, DC – Generation Opportunity, a national, non-partisan youth advocacy organization, is announcing its Millennial Jobs Report for March 2015. The data is nonseasonally adjusted (NSA) and is specific to 18-29-year-olds: The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29-year-olds, which adjusts for labor force participation by including those who have given up looking for work, is 13.9 percent (NSA). The (U-3)

unemployment rate for 18-29 year olds is 9.1 percent (NSA).

The declining labor force participation rate has created an additional 1.842 million young adults that are not counted as “unemployed” by the U.S. Department of Labor because they are not in the labor force, meaning that those young people have given up looking for work due to the lack of jobs.

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29-year-old AfricanAmericans is 20.2 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 16 percent (NSA).

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29-year-old Hispanics is 14.3 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 9.4 percent (NSA).

The effective (U-6) unemployment rate for 18-29-year-old women is 11.8 percent (NSA); the (U-3) unemployment rate is 8.1 percent (NSA).

JOHNSON: Confronting Autism Spectrum Disorders

April is recognized as National Autism Awareness Month.

It is a time set aside to promote the acceptance of Autism and to acknowledge the patients, families, and caregivers impacted by the condition known as Autism spectrum disorder.

While researchers have made strides based in scientific discovery of developmental dis-orders, additional public health education is necessary and more research and tracking must

be conducted to learn more about ASD. Autism is a developmental disorder that occurs in the brain, causing speech problems and difficulties with social interaction.

Health experts say that a child with ASD may experience no ASD symptoms or disabilities as an infant and later withdraw from regular social activities.

Approximately one out of every sixty-eight American children suffers from ASD, according to Dr. Pauline Filipek, who directs the highlyregarded Autism Center located at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

Dr. Filipek, who works on ASD research with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said that during the month of April, we have an opportunity to emphasize the importance of screening and early diagnosis in young children.

She noted that “when children are screened and diagnosed at a young age, early interventions are more likely to lead to better outcomes.”

All of the school districts in the 30th Congressional District offer programs, usually through their

special education departments, that serve students with ASD. The programs are designed to help students improve self-esteem, encouraging participation in society and positive health outcomes.

In 2008, the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) launched their Autism Program for children with ASD between the ages of three and eight.

The DARS Autism Program extends treatment services and provides Applied Behavior Analysis for children with an ASD diagnosis.

Dallas was one of three geographical areas in the state to offer the program.

Since its inception, the program has been expanded to include other areas in the state, including San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi and El Paso.

In 2013, the 83rd Texas Legislature required DARS to expand the Autism Program in an effort to increase the number of children receiving services.

Nationwide, treatment for children with ASD cost $11.5 billion in 2011,

according to researchers at the Rand Corporation in Virginia.

Caring for a child with ASD costs an estimated $17,000 more per year than the cost of caring for a child without ASD. This number accounts for health care, education, ASDrelated therapy, family coordinated services, and caregiver time.

Given that diagnosing ASD is very difficult, and there is no cure, we must support the resources geared toward increasing awareness.

As a community, it is important for us to learn more about ASD. Early detection and diagnosis is often the key to a more successful life for an individual with ASD, because it is proven that early detection improves development.

I will continue to advocate for increased awareness and more federal dollars to invest in research, so that we may help to ease the burdens that impact ASD patients and their families.

The confirmation of Loretta Lynch, the first African American woman to be nominated to be U.S. Attorney General, has been delayed longer than any Attorney General nominee in history.

Last month, Urban League executives gathered in Washington, D.C., for the National Urban League’s annual Legislative Policy Conference. We met with our elected leaders and Administration officials to share the concerns of the people we serve. Among our most urgent requests: Confirm Loretta Lynch.

Few individuals in history have been as qualified for the office as Ms. Lynch. Nearly 25 years ago, she began her legal career as a drug and violent-crime prosecu tor in the U.S. Attorney's office in 1990. She later served as the chief of the Long Island office and focused on political corruption. In 1999, she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and oversaw the prosecution of New York City police officers in the Abner Louima case. After several years in the private sector, she returned to the position of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and served two years on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The Dallas Chapter, The Links, Incorporated was organized by Mrs. Fannie C. Smith in November 1957. A Family Reunion, Romance Slam Jam Style The Romance Slam Jam (RSJ) was held March 26 - March 28, 2015 at the Embassy Suites in Grapevine, Texas.

Host authors for the 2015 RSJ were Evelyn Palfrey, of Austin, Texas; and Keith Thomas Walker of Fort Worth, Texas.

Attorney and author, Palfrey writes for the “marvelously mature.” In her novels, at least one of her characters owns a RV, since she has owned several RVs over the years. Her last book, Going Home, is a novel about Hurricane Katrina transplants in Texas.

Gwendolyn Osborne was the luncheon keynote speaker on Friday, March 27. She presented the history of RSJ, and reviewed the career of Gwynne Forester, a demographer, romance writer and staunch supporter of the RSJ. During the Emma Awards banquet, on Saturday, March 28th, Gwen Osborne presented a tribute to Gwynne Forester.

Osborne is a reader and host of Diva Daze.

Special guests at the conference were from the publishing industry: Latoya C. Smith, Executive Editor, Samhain Publishing; Mercedes Fernandez, Associate Editor, Kensington Books; and Shannon Chris, Associate Editor, Harlequin Kimani Romance.

Gwendolyn Pough, Ph.D, moderated the RSJ Town Hall meeting with the editors from the publishing industry. Dr. Pough, writes romance books under the name of Gwyneth Bolton.

Attendance reached 150 readers and authors over the threeday period. The RSJ Conference raised over $2,000 which will be donated to The Family Place for Southern sector clients. The Family Place is the choice recipient of RSJ donations since the transition of Francis Ray in 2013.

The late Francis Ray established the Turning Point Legal Defense Fund to assist battered women with their legal expenses. The fund is managed by The Family Place, a Dallas Women’s shelter, and is named for her 2001 novel The Turning Point, her first mainstream novel. In 2004, the book was reissued under the title of Trouble Don’t Last Always.

The Romance Slam Jam was founded in 1995 by author Francis Ray, booksellers Emma Rodgers and Ashira Tosihwe of Black Images Book Bazaar in Dallas, Texas. Deatri KingBey took over management of the RSJ, and started the Romance Slam Jam Organization in 2008.

Author King-Bey, of Phoenix, AZ, will pass the torch of leadership to Bonita Thornton, founder of Sisters’ Thoughts from Coast to Coast (STCC). Ms. Thornton, of Los Angeles, CA, hosts an online book club with over 50 members. The transition of leadership will occur over the next year.

A Review of Get Hard

Hardly Forgettable

By Eva D. Coleman Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have teamed up for a film that moviegoers are bound to remember.

While Get Hard has a stronghold on edgy adult humor, it also provides a comical look at class and race.

James King, played by Ferrell, sees his success as an investment industry manager plummet due to accusations of fraud.

As a result, he is sentenced to prison and seeks help from Hart’s character, Darnell Lewis, to get in shape for life inside the San Quentin prison walls.

Lewis is a mobile car detail business owner whose closest encounter with a hard life is recounting and reciting scenes from the movie Boys in the Hood.

As a way to earn a large sum of money he desperately needs, he creates and brings to life an elaborate Prison Readiness Program to assist King.

Earlier in the film, long before King is accused of fraud and sentenced, and as he sifts through 100 dollar bills to tip Lewis two dollars for washing his car, he tells Lewis, “Success is a mindset.”

This served as one of the most memorable lines from the movie.

Lewis is an African-American entrepreneur who wants more for his family. His goal is to measure up to success by obtaining a home in a nice neighborhood so that his child can go to school in a safe environment.

The film also makes light of how sometimes, out of desperation to get ahead, adults place children in grown-up situations to garner sympathy.

Such is the case in the scene where Lewis places his child on the phone, encouraging her to “act” like he showed her, in attempts to get a home loan.

There’s also hoodie humor.

While King is searching inside his freshlywashed ride for the key, he is startled by a hoodie-wearing Lewis who attempts to give the car key to him.

King immediately sees it as a holdup situation. This scene pokes fun at the black male in a hoodie stereotype.

Get Hard does more than push the envelope.

It pushes a case of priority mail with return receipt. Some may want to return to sender.

There’s a priority on funny with a return lesson of what is now acceptable as visuals on-screen. There are graphic sexual scenes, even some that made moviegoers in the theater gasp.

This is definitely not a kid-friendly movie, so please leave your children at home!

Get Hard is full of messages and surprises.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of the title of one of Hart’s movies and stand-up comedy tour, Laugh at My Pain.

H a r t a n d F e r r e l l ’s characters in Get Hard provide a poignant look at morality as it relates to success. It shows how success can be painful, quickly leading to a lonely road of abandonment when you fall from it.

The film also injects humor into sensitive topics of class, race, gender, sexual orientation and culture.

It reminds us that when life gets hard, it helps to laugh along the way.

LOL, which is where you told your Mama you’d be studying. We thought we were being grown and our mother’s knew all along, just like you will.

I think 17 is an appropriate age to visit a beau with parental supervision.

And no, I don’t think it’s overreacting to contact the mother of her “so called” boyfriend. There’s no need to become instant BFF’s. All that’s required is the two of you should maintain an open line of communication.

Now, with that being said, indulge me for a minute.

Everybody knows a teenage girl eats drama at every meal; it’s a part of her digestive system. The quandary is how much of her drama requires you to hover, so here’s my two cents.

All of our daughters should be given the benefit of the doubt until proven differently. I think it tears at their confidence to be reprimanded for something they cudda, wudda, may have done.

I’d love to see you give her some slack and see what happens. Don’t force her to carry your “when-I-was-a-young-girl” handbags of blunders and

burdens. She’s entitled to make her own mistakes.

That’s an expected part of life, and you’ll be there, full of mother wisdom and direction.

Offer trust and teach her what it means to be trusted. Believe in her and let her know that you expect her to make the right choices when necessary.

Your side-eye will keep her on the straight and narrow.

When it’s time for her to make those life decisions, it won’t be the whispers of her boyfriend or the dare of a girlfriend that will deter her from doing the right thing.

It will be the thought that she doesn’t wanna deal with her “no-nonsense-oh-no-you-didn’t” mother, the one who unconditionally trusted her.

WASHINGTON: Yesterday, Tomorrow Not Promised There’s this thing that happens when you read the bible about miracles being performed to the amazement of hundreds and even thousands.

Today, I believe most of us would have a hard time dealing with “so called” miracles and merely chalk that kind of thinking as “back in the day” type stuff.

That was then. This is now.

Sure Christ and His early followers did the unexplainable, the unbelievable; the stuff modern science still can’t figure out. The question is do you really believe in miracles? Our explanation, our feelings are rationalized because; after all, the bible is a book of faith and not a book of science. Well, for Christians at least, the truth of miracles is crystallized in whether or not Jesus actually came back from the dead. It is the foundation of our belief. That’s probably why we’re called believers.

That is a discussion for another day, even though miracle is a perfect term to use for Christ’s life, death and life. It’s this miracle thing that guides my perspective today.

Things become very interesting once you accept Christ for who He

The fact that when I open my eyes on my own existence, I am able to gain a perspective on God’s other creations, including you.

I am able to live and breathe and taste and see and hear and think and yes, also love. I am because He is. It kind of gives you a brand new perspective on God’s most precious gift…time.

God’s everyday miracle is still how much He loves me (and you).

That love is why we’re here.

Because of it, every now and then I am not so consumed with a habitual view of life. I can start a

morning, end a day with a sincere ‘thank you.’

I can pray for the blessing of a new day, one that includes the revelation of who God is and who I am to Him. And that knowledge lets me pass this way in truth and not ignorance. The age of miracles is still here.

The proof…you woke up this morning to a new day in a world you didn’t create. You can think that’s normal if you want to.

I choose to believe in miracles, those of the ancient world and the ones that have me writing this to you now.

This life thing is impossible for me to take for granted, as it should be for you.

As you consume the most powerful miracle ever, the gift of today, yesterday and tomorrow pale in comparison.

Mary Schmidt Campbell Named 10th Spelman President

On Saturday, March 28th, the Board of Trustees of Spelman College announced the selection of Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., as the College’s 10th president since its founding in 1881. Dr. Campbell assumes the role officially August 1, 2015, having served as dean emerita of the Tisch School of the Arts and university professor in the Department of Art and Public Policy at New York University.

Dr. Campbell’s experience spans both the private and non-profit sectors. Early in her career, she established herself as a change agent when she was executive director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the first accredited Black fine arts museum in the nation. At Tisch, Dr. Campbell elevated the school’s profile and stature, increased the recruitment of a more diverse faculty and student body, and led an unprecedented capital campaign for the school. As associate provost for the Arts of NYU, she spearheaded the development of NYU’s Game Center, a multi-disciplinary collaboration among education, science, engineering and the arts. Dr. Campbell also previously served as New York City’s cultural affairs commissioner, and in 2009, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve as the vice chair of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, a non-partisan White House advisory group. In this role, she participated in a national effort to use arts education as a strategy to successfully turn around some of the nation’s worst performing schools.

An art historian, she is currently completing a biography of the Black artist, Romare Bearden.

“I am honored to join a community with such a distinguished record for developing bold thinking Black women who have vaulted into leadership roles all over the country,” said Dr. Campbell, presidentelect, Spelman College. “For over a decade, Dr. Beverly Tatum has provided stellar leadership to the Spelman community –trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumnae – and it is a privilege to inherit the presidency from such a visionary leader.”

Spelman’s current president, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, will step down in July after 13 years at the helm of the nation’s most selective historically Black college for women. Her tenure has been marked with a number of achievements including record fundraising, strong enrollment, significant campus renovations and a oneof-a-kind wellness initiative tailored to interrupt the declining health trajectory for African-American women. Dr. Tatum is expected to remain in Atlanta where she will return to her roots as a scholar and writer, and where she will also continue to be active in community endeavors.

“Leading a college is like running a relay race.

You get the baton from one person and run as fast as you can to make as much progress as you can until it is your turn to pass the baton,” said Dr. Tatum. “That baton is now being passed to someone who can run fast and carry it forward with vision and speed.”

Dr. Campbell’s appointment comes as a result of a highly competitive and selective process launched last summer by the College’s Board of Trustees.

“Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell is enterprising and exhibits tremendous clarity in responding to challenges with sustainable solutions. She identifies and advances opportunities for growth and success. She is a true interdisciplinary scholar with exemplary skills to guide us,” said Rosalind Brewer, Spelman graduate, chair of the Spelman Board of Trustees and president and CEO of Sam’s Club. “She is the right leader at the right time because her dynamic and innovative leadership has been demonstrated at every step along the way in her career.”

“Spelman College could not have made a more outstanding choice than Mary Schmidt Campbell to be its next president,” said New York University President John Sexton. “She is an institution builder, and she draws the best out of everyone around her. Dr. Campbell received a B.A. degree in English literature from Swarthmore College, an M.A. in art history from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. in humanities, also from Syracuse. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and sits on the board of The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

A former member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Shakespeare Festival, Dr. Campbell also served for 12 years on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College.

She holds honorary degrees from The College of New Rochelle, Colgate University, City University of New York, Pace University, Maryland Institute College of Art and Swarthmore College and is the recipient of a number of awards and honors. She lectures widely around the country and around the world and has authored many papers and articles on a range of subjects including African-American art, urban cultural policy issues, leadership and arts in education.

She is co-editor of Artistic Citizenship: A Public Voice for the Arts (New York: Routledge, 2006) and co-author of Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America (New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1987) and Memory and Metaphor: The Art of Romare Bearden, 1940-1987 (New York: Oxford University Press & The Studio Museum in Harlem, 1991). She is currently completing a book on Romare Bearden for Oxford University Press.
