Message to the People... That’s right-- you have to go back to the polls in June! Election day 2015 in Dallas, TX made some people very happy, while others were very sad, or downright angry. I won’t even waste time talking about the dismal voter turnout!

Cheryl Smith

Dallas re-elected its Mayor, Mike Rawlings. For the City Council District 4 seat vacated by term-limited Councilmember Dwaine Caraway, Carolyn King Arnold walked away with the victory in a crowded field where some were hoping for an opportunity to go one-on-one, head-to-head with an opponent. Other victors were the unopposed: Scott Griggs and Adam Medrano in Districts 1 and 2 respectively and Place 11 Lee M. Kleinman, Place 12 Sandy Greyson; Place 13 Jennifer Staubach Gates; and, Place 14 Philip T. Kingston.

Victoria Lennox 9

Then in District 5 - Rick Callahan defeated Jesse Diaz and Sherry Cordova; in District 6 Monica Alonzo defeated Ozumba Lnuk-X, Daniel "DC" Caldwell, I and Lakolya London; in District 9 - Mark Clayton defeated Christopher Jackson, Darren Boruff, Sam Merten and Will Logg. Now it’s runoff time! Quit Playin’ 12

Voters will go back to the Polls on June 13 for District 3 - Casey Thomas or Joe Tave; District 7 - Tiffinni A. Young or Kevin Felder; District 8 - dianne gibson or Erik Wilson and District 10 - Paul Reyes or Adam McGough. I can’t begin to guess what the turnout will be, no more than I can predict the weather. I know one thing, however, folks need to stop making excuses and begin taking an active interest in the process. To those who offered themselves up for service, I say thanks! Public service is not easy and a number of people put for the effort to take a leadership role. I saw your passion and know that you were sincere. Please don’t be discouraged. You are needed. You must continue to be on the forefront of issues. Just like the title means nothing if you don’t do anything with it, you don’t need a title to do something.

And for the victors, there’s nothing noble or righteous about being ungracious in victory. Graciousness is an attribute that is praiseworthy in victory or defeat. While I witnessed unsportsmanlike behavior from some of the candidates, I sincerely hope those few misguided individuals took some time to realize that their actions were not appropriate and a reality check is needed. You can have an opponent without making an enemy. And as we celebrate the 90th birthday of Malcolm X, remember it was that wise visionary who said that the issues effecting our community are bigger than any one individual and when you focus on personalities, the community suffers because the issues aren’t addressed. We have too many issues in our communities and none of us are more important!

Curry:Walking Away from Bad CUSTOMER SERVICE After 19 years, most of them as a satisfied customer, I am closing my personal checking account this week at Citibank. I am closing my account not because I was lured away with an incredibly attractive offer from one of its competitors. Rather, I am walking away from Citi because of bad CUSTOMER SERVICE. When a business loses customers who want to stay, it’s a sure sign of trouble. My issue was a simple one. Throughout 2014, whenever I made a DEPOSIT to my personal Citi account from my business account at a rival national bank, the full amount was immediately made available upon deposit in the ATM. Beginning this year, however, the full amount was no longer being honored and no one would tell me why. I started with the CUSTOMER SERVICE Department. Instead of being responsive to my complaint, five different representatives – Sabrina Padron, Rene Torres, Christine Flanders, Priscilla Chaires and Christine Naranjo – felt the need to send me form letters essentially stating Citibank’s policy of spreading funds availability above a certain amount over five business days. Despite assurance in an email to me from Padron, dated March 4, that “Citi is committed to providing our client’s [SIC] with world class service that is efficient,

responsive and dependable,” the service was neither world class, efficient, nor responsive. After sending five emails to the online services department and not getting a reply that was “responsive,” I decided to approach the branch manager near my HOME. He promised to look into the matter and to call me back within several days. He kept his word and when he called, he said he could find no reason why the change had been made. Finally, I emailed a letter to CEO Michael Corbat on April 2. At press time, I had not received a reply, which is not surprising given the volume of correspondence he probably receives. In the meantime, I have opened a personal account at the bank where I do my business CHECKING and ignored the last email I received from Christine Naranjo asserting that “…Citi is committed to providing our client’s [SIC] with world class service that is efficient, responsive and dependable.” (Surely, someone at a bank that purports to provide “world class service” should know that “clients” is not spelled with an apostrophe.)

Less than six months ago, I had to walk away from a Merchant’s shop that not only misdiagnosed the problem, but incorrectly INSTALLED the wrong part on a vehicle. I had been using the business for more than a decade, but no more. When service is bad, I have decided to not simply walk away in silence. Instead, when I leave now, I let them know why I am leaving. If they are serious about CUSTOMER SERVICE, they will fix the problem that prompted me to leave. If they continue to ignore those problems, they might not be in business long, anyway. By the same token, I believe in rewarding good service in word and deed. For instance, when I was treated recently at Emory Johns Creek Hospital near Atlanta for a mild heart attack, I publicly thanked the outstanding NURSES by name and copied the hospital’s interim CEO. As one who waited tables on trains over the Christmas holidays to help pay my way through Knoxville College, I am extremely sensitive to service and tipping. I usually tip between 20 and 25 percent, sometimes more. If the service

is exceptional, I note that on the receipt and sometimes ask to speak to the supervisor. However, I have not convinced myself to tip people when I pick up a carry-out order. It’s not like they are waiting on me. They pick up the order from the kitchen, take my money and hand me my order. That is not the same as waiting on me at a table. Last Saturday, I went to Olive Garden to pick up an order. Instead of handing me my $2 change, the employee had the gall to ask, “Do you need YOUR $2 back?” Of course, I need all of my money back. Thanks for asking. Speaking of restaurant employees, I have two pet peeves. One is when they ask, “How are we doing today?” I can’t speak for them, so I don’t know how we are doing. If you want to know how I am doing or how my dining party is doing, it would not require any more energy to ask the question directly. I try to restrain myself when they ask, as they frequently do: “How was everything?” I didn’t eat everything, so I couldn’t possibly know the answer to that question. I can only tell you about the food I consumed. I know, I know, I am becoming persnickety in my old age. I have decided to become more vocal when I receive good or bad service. In doing so, I hope that will improve the next customer’s experience.

Even more impressive is to have seven students from one school district chosen among this coveted group. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program recently announced that seven Dallas ISD students were selected to receive full scholarships to any accredited college or university of their choice located in the U.S. The scholarships are good through graduation, meaning they are renewable based on program guidelines throughout a student’s higher educational pursuits—from the undergraduate to the master and doctoral levels. He plans to major in petroleum engineering and aspires to be a venture capitalist. Class Valedictorian Kenneth Robinson had to push through the tragic loss of his mother during his freshman year, and while it wasn’t easy, his commitment to leadership and excellence helped fuel his drive to succeed. He served as the highest ranking officer in Justin F. Kimball High School’s ROTC program, president of the school’s National Honor Society, student council, the National Academy of Engineering Advisory Board, and others. He plans to pursue his doctorate in physics to help develop new power sources. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

JOHNSON: National Nurses Week individuals for their indelible contributions. In support of nurses throughout our nation, I will re-introduce a resolution to recognize National Nurses Week in the House of Representatives on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. While recognizing and thanking nurses for their contributions to the health care system is very important to me, it is imperative that I take this opportunity to highlight the critical impending shortage of nurses our nation is predicted to experience. By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Each year, from May 6 to May 12, we take time to thank the 3.1 million registered nurses for their dedication to patients and their families during National Nurses Week. For the past thirteen years, nursing has been voted as the most trusted and ethical profession in our country. Now is the time to recognize and thank these

The demand for nurses continues to grow as Baby Boomers age and as more individuals and families gain health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act. Projections indicate that by 2020, the United States will experience a shortage of more than 800,000 nurses. In short, the supply of nurses will not meet the demand for nurses. The growing nursing shortage results in fewer nurses who will be

required to work longer hours and care for sicker patients. This not only compromises the quality of care that patients receive, it also contributes to more nurses leaving the profession or opting to work outside of the hospital. As a lawmaker, I am fully committed to meaningful legislation that addresses the critical shortage of nurses. For example, the Affordable Care Act contains strategies for funding and retaining nurses by providing student loan repayment programs for nurses who are willing to work in facilities that experience a nursing shortage. An additional piece of the Affordable Care Act includes a Graduate Nursing Education Demonstration that provides funding for the clinical education of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) through an academic institution and hospital partnership. While provisions and programs like these are certainly a step in the right direction, we need permanent,

comprehensive fixes that will boost the number of nurses in this country. As we continue to struggle with a looming nursing shortage, I have reintroduced legislation in this Congress to provide the Chief Nurse Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service with a true leadership role as the National Nurse for Public Health. In order to retain the nurses that we have at this point, we must provide them with a visible nurse leader who can promote public health, prevention, and health literacy. While we recognize nurses and their contributions to society this week, we must also realize the potential that the profession has to lead a nationwide shift to wellness. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to thank and recognize any nurse in your life. Each nurse is important to our society. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

May God bless and keep you

Dallas Councilmembers recognized by the Texas House Austin - Representative Helen Giddings (Dallas-D) recently recognized the outstanding service of the six retiring members of the Dallas City Council. Standing on the dais, before the full House of Representatives, councilmembers Vonceil Jones Hill, Carolyn Davis,Sheffie Kadane and Mayor Pro Tern Tennell Atkins received a warm reception. The House passed a congratulatory resolution, authored by Representative Giddings,to commend their work Rep. Helen Giddings at the helm of Dallas government over the last eight years.

The resolution included commendation of councilmembers Jerry Allen and former Mayor Dwaine Caraway, who were not able to make the trip to Austin. "Their tenure was uncertain. Little mistakes were often blown out of proportion. Major accomplishments were sometimes overlooked. While they have not always agreed with one another, they agreed enough to leave a rich and lasting legacy in the City of Dallas," Giddings said. Due to term limitations, these officials must retire from service next month. Giddings cited many of the

accomplishments of our city during their tenure on the Council. "They courageously pursued the goals of our expanding city by overseeing some of the greatest capital projects in Dallas' history." Giddings continued,"working, all the while, with our police department to reduce crime across the city. We will all miss their service on the Dallas City Council. This is an opportunity to recognize the significance of their work for the City of Dallas and all of our citizens. We honored them for their service and offer them our best wishes for the next chapter in their lives." As they departed the House Chamber, they spoke briefly with Governor Abbott. HALL: Michelle and Malcolm!! The First Lady threw down the gauntlet at the historic Tuskegee University last week. You knew it had to be a damn good commencement speech when the Washington Post reported… “Of course, Obama’s truthtelling was met with the usual and predictable harangues from

the reactionary right. Laura Ingraham called the first lady’s commencement address “a litany of victimization.” Rush Limbaugh accused her of “playing the race card.” Sean Hannity said Obama displayed a “bitterness” and a “lack of appreciation for the opportunities” afforded her and the president. And Mark Levin said the two of them have “done more damage to race relations in this country since George Wallace, there I said it and I mean it.” When balled up together, all of these acerbic comments just proved the point Obama made as she ran through some of the name-calling she and her husband have endured.” First Lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama has had enough and it's starting to show. She and her husband, President Barack Hussein Obama, have gracefully shouldered the brunt of some brutal racism for the last six years.

PAGE 12

Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist.

The First Fam are about to chunk deuces at these fools, so they might as well “play the dozens” on the way out. My grandfather had less than a sixth grade education, but he would often tell me the facts of life in a way that were beneficial to my mind, body and soul. Although Ed Hall had no degrees, licenses or certifications in psychology, he knew how to get relief. Papa always said there is no more exhilarating experience to relieve your mind than personally inviting an SOB to kiss your naked assurance. I am glad that the First Lady and her history making husband are about to get that privilege. You may not agree with me, but this presidency has been a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, children of all races can honestly be told they can do and be whatever they want. It was a myth before

2008. We elected a Black man to the highest office in the nation and the most significant post in the world. And don't get it twisted, Black folks didn't elect him, White folks looked beyond the mystery to change history. From the sang-froid of his acceptance address on Election Day 2008 that made Jesse Jackson tear up, right through the most e n e rg i z i n g inauguration in the history of the United States; Barack Obama has made us proud. But before he could finish the unifying speech, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his minions were plotting to bring him down by any means necessary. They beckoned Conservative Neanderthals to come out of

I MESSENGER

their covert caverns of cockeyed criticism and red-meat racism. Alas, Fox News was re-born and overt racism has thrived ever since. For all the good that has been wrought by electing Barack Obama and showcasing his enigmatic wife, the downfalls are equally rough. First, he was politically forced to divorce himself from his own spiritual mentor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright Jr., the same man who spoke words of encouragement and vision into the Obama clan (no pun intended) for so many years. Soon after Obama’s election, the elected, appointed, declared, and a bunch of wannabees -- the Republican/Tea Party, have made vile and visible efforts to denigrate his name, falsify his presidential record, and to pervert his purpose as a man and as a duly elected leader. But since it's the 90th birthday celebration for Malcolm X, let me remix what he once said; “Your chickens are about to come home to roost.” In other words, that same spirit of hatred that the GOP has put out into the atmosphere, is about to come back on them. I look forward to the day when Barack and Michelle can tell America about itself. Not out of a spirit of spite or as a reach toward retaliation, but with sobering class. Americans needs to be told exactly how it is and Michelle is about to go Malcolm!!

Top 10 HBCUs with the Highest Retention Rates for 2015 The new report has been issued by EDsmart, which reveals the top ten historically black colleges with the highest retention and graduation rates. The report allows students, parents, and schools to evaluate colleges based on important outcome-related measures. Also shown are the degrees awarded, which can be a factor of consideration for schools and counselors. Each year, students decide to transfer from one college to another for various reasons. Although this is a choice for the student, it also means it could increase their overall cost of attendance and decrease their probability of graduation. Students who decide to transfer to a new college lower their chance of graduating in six years by 87%. Choosing the right college is very important. Student’s choosing a college that has high retention and graduation rates reduces a students likelihood of transferring to a new college. It also shows the college is offering their students quality courses and facilities. EDsmart states, “Although graduation and retention rates are factors that should weigh heavily in a

student’s decision of which university to attend, those that are evaluating potential candidates should use these figures only as a way to narrow down their schools of choice. We advise parents and potential students to look at other factors that are specific to each individual’s needs.” The Top Ten Historically Black Colleges with the Highest Retention and Graduation Rates are as follows: RANK UNIVERSITY LOCATION 10 Oakwood University Hunstville, AL 9 Wilberforce University Wilberforce, OH 8 Winston-Salem State University Winston-Salem, NC 7 Tougaloo College Tougaloo, MS 6 Elizabeth City State University Elizabeth City, NC 5 Florida A&M University Tallahassee, FL 4 Howard University Washington, DC 3 Morehouse College Atlanta, GA

Graduation and retention rates are not only a good way for students and parents to find the best colleges; they also offer a metric for the colleges themselves to gauge how well they are serving their student’s needs. When a college loses a student, it also becomes a financial loss to both parties. Xavier University of Louisiana announces new president NEW ORLEANS, PRNewswire/ -The Board of Trustees of Xavier University of Louisiana recently announced that it has unanimously elected Dr. C. Reynold Verret as the university's next president. "I would like to congratulate and welcome Dr. Verret to the Xavier family," said Michael Rue, chairman of the Board of Trustees. "While there were a number of highly-qualified candidates, Dr. Verret stood out for his proven leadership and experience expanding enrollment and increasing graduation rates. His record of achievement, personal history, and values set him apart as the clear choice to carry on the ideals that our founder, St. Katharine Drexel, and our longstanding president, Dr. Norman C. Francis, wove into the fabric of this institution." Dr. Verret is joining Xavier from Savannah State University where he has served as provost and chief academic officer since 2012. The university is recognized as the oldest institution of higher learning in coastal Georgia and the first public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the state. "I am deeply honored to be elected as the next president of Xavier and am excited to engage the entire Xavier community in envisioning a future that sustains the university's distinct mission in a changing higher education environment and that responds to societal need," said Dr. Verret. "Upon arriving in this country as a refugee from Haiti in 1963, I was supported by many who nurtured my love of learning and science and gave me the encouragement and confidence to persevere. During my tenure at Xavier, I will continue paying it forward, helping generations of young people realize their dreams, regardless of their backgrounds." Dr. Verret is uniquely qualified by his experience, education, and values to guide Xavier's mission of promoting a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. His journey from immigrating to the United States as a young boy to guiding institutions of higher education to success has equipped him with distinctive skills and understanding to lead an HBCU in general, and Xavier in particular. "From its beginning, Xavier has been dedicated to empowerment of the underserved and voiceless through education, which is a vital instrument of societal strength and justice. In this regard, Xavier's purpose remains relevant, and I am eager to sustain and strengthen it," said Dr. Verret. "I have been shaped by the encounter of faith and reason, as a student of the Jesuits at the former Brooklyn Preparatory, of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and before then, by the Fathers of the Holy Spirit." Dr. Verret was identified through a national search that followed the September 2014 announcement that Dr. Francis would be retiring on June 30,

Remembering B.B. KING

In just over two weeks, there has been the passing of two kings. Crooner Ben E. King of “Stand By Me” and “Save the Last Dance for Me” fame died on April 30, 2015 and on May 14, 2015, the announcement of B.B. King’s transition took over the airwaves and social media. His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continues to wear his crown well. At age 76, he is still light on his feet, singing and PLAYING the blues with relentless passion. Mr. King passed peacefully in his sleep at 9:40 pm PT on May 14 2015. Time has had no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. For more than half a century, Riley B. King – better known as B.B. King – defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them classics. He was born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola.

In his youth, he played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music CAREER. Memphis was where every important musician of the South gravitated, and which supported a large musical community where every style of African American music could be found. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most celebrated blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues.

left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist’s vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound. In B.B.’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by PLAYING Lucille.”

B.B.’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio PROGRAM on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on black-staffed and managed Memphis radio station WDIA. “King’s Spot,” became so popular, it was expanded and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Soon B.B. needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street

Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. In the mid-1950s, while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, then realized that he left his beloved $30 acoustic guitar inside, so he rushed back inside the burning building to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar to remind him never to do a crazy thing like fight over a woman. Ever since, each one of B.B.’s trademark Gibson guitars has been called Lucille. Soon after his NUMBER one hit, “Three O’Clock Blues,” B.B. began touring nationally. In 1956, B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 onenight stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small-town cafes, juke joints, and country dance halls to rock palaces, symphony concert halls, universities, resort hotels and amphitheaters, nationally and internationally, B.B. has become the most renowned blues musician of the past 40 years. Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world’s most identifiable guitar styles. He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his

In 1968, B.B. played at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West on bills with the hottest contemporary rock artists of the day who idolized B.B. and helped to introduce him to a young white audience. In “69, B.B. was chosen by the Rolling Stones TO OPEN 18 American concerts for them; Ike and Tina Turner also played on 18 shows. B.B. was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He received NARAS’ Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987, and has received honorary DOCTORATES from Tougaloo(MS) College in 1973; Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990; Mississippi Valley State University in 2002 and Brown University in 2007. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi. In 1991, B.B. King’s Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City’s Times Square opened in June 2000 and most recently two clubs opened at Foxwoods CASINO in Connecticut in January 2002. In 1996, the CD-Rom On The Road With B.B. King: An Interactive Autobiography was released to rave reviews. Also in 1996, B.B.’s autobiography, “Blues All Around Me” (written with David Ritz for Avon Books) was published. In a similar vein, Doubleday published “The Arrival of B.B. King” by Charles Sawyer, in 1980.

Ask Alma… Answering my Critics Dear Alma, I have worked for a large cleaning company for the past 17 years. Our supervisor recently retired and I was promoted to that job. Once I was promoted, we hired a new guy to join our team who has been doing an outstanding job. He is one of the best employees and cleaners I’ve worked with for a long time. He is a man of few words and shows up every day to get the job done. Every year we pick one person to receive a bonus for a job well done. The supervisor is the person who picks the WINNER. Without a doubt I thought this guy deserved the bonus. When the others heard he got the award they were mad and whispering behind my back that it was unfair for him to get it. Two of our employees have started acting resentful towards me because they said they’ve worked with me longer. I keep hearing the gossip and I want to explain why I picked the new guy but my husband says I don’t owe them an explanation.

Ask Alma

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Po s t . Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.

I don’t know what to do. I don’t want our crew to be divided or for them not to like me. Do you think I should call a meeting and tell them why I picked him over the others? The Boss Ahhhhh no, Boss Lady! It was your decision and you made it. Believe and trust in yourself. There was a reason you were promoted; stand tall in the new OPPORTUNITY you’ve been appointed. You’ve got to pay the cost to be the boss, and it ain’t no walk in a delightfully scrumptious designer kitchen. Most want to be on top but can’t handle the pressure. When it

comes time to make the hard decisions, CONTINUE to trust your gut. You know who’s doing what, how and when. That’s why you were able to hands down, pick the WINNER. Don’t second-guess your abilities because of a few rotten apples filling up your fancy fruit basket. Like the old folks use to say, always judge what you hear by who said it. Seasoned adults understand sometimes they’ll be overlooked for a particular position or won’t get the praise they think they deserve, so is life. We all must CONTINUE to be our best and believe that one day our

diligence and superb efforts be rewarded. Complaining is draining and employees who sit around cantankerous, moaning and grumbling all day, can’t be doing a good job. Like I said before, do not explain yourself to the staff. The announcement was made and the BONUS was presented. That’s it, game over. To anyone who feels slighter, tough tootsie roll. Close the chapter on this my darling. You can call a meeting, but don’t mention the award. What you can do is, push and promote teamwork and continue to focus on performance. That’s about all you can control. Don’t allow yourself to be a pushover, I can tell you’re a little softhearted. Put on your big girl bloomers, grab your scrub brush and handle your business. Congratulations on your promotion. Your loyalty with this company has served you well. Alma

WASHINGTON: Prayer is yet still the answer Spiritual Speaking By James Washington

Have you succumbed to the notion yet that prayer will get you through it? The ‘it’ I’m referring to is everything. If you’re like me then the truth is at times you’re not very enthusiastic about your faith. That fire that initially burned in me when I finally met Christ leaves me more cold than hot and I cannot and do not remain constant or consistent in my journey towards eternal salvation. Have you ever been there? Even my prayer life is more often weak than strong. I’ve finally figured out at times like these that if I only do one thing, I have to continue to pray. However casual or cavalier I might think it is, if I

PAGE 18

do nothing else, I’ve learned that I’ve got to pray my way through it. If you’ve ever been lost on a nameless highway and know that you’re lost, you probably understand what I’m talking about. No exit, no gas stations, no people or other cars around, no one to ask for directions. You just keep driving and you just keep looking. It’s just you and the needle on the fuel gauge. Given yours and my circumstances, prayer is probably very appropriate when one is spiritually lost; especially when you are forced to acknowledge that you are lost. My word to you is to just keep praying. At this stage of my spiritual development, I can’t think of an

alternative. I just so happened to look up prayer in my bible’s Concordance and found out that I’m correct in my assumption that prayer(s), pray(ed), praying, all hold a special place in spiritual history and in the eyes of God. For every quote I could give you right now, there are many of you who could quote at least three more appropriate ones for this message. James 5:15-16 “And prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you might be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” I will not sit here and profess to you to be a righteous man. What I will do is to profess to you and anyone who will listen is that I am a sinner seeking God’s forgiveness. I am also on record as praying for you, my fellow man that you too, will understand God’s faithfulness. Mark 11:24-25

I MESSENGER

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” I’m not making this up. This is what the text says. Hopefully, what I’m trying to convey to you is once I was lost. I’m sure I’ll get lost again and when it happens, prayer will continue to lead me home. It is an irrefutable spiritual fact. Try it. Speak to God from your heart. Let Him know that you know He knows you are lost. He will then step up and act out on your behalf proclaiming for all to see that you are never really lost. He has known where you were from the beginning of time. May God bless and keep you always.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,

the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
