Texas Black Business:
Time to go “Back to the Future” It often seems the only time Black Texans think about Black-owned businesses is when it’s time to complain about shoddy customer service, or the difficulty in finding them conveniently, or their failure to carry preferred brands. Rarely do we equate these perceived shortfalls to the rate at which we patronize these businesses. It’s actually a pretty simple formula: support Black-owned businesses and (magically) customer service will improve; they will be able to expand new locations and carry the brands you can’t live without. This current failure to consider Blackowned businesses has not always been the way Black Texans viewed the critical need to support our businesses. Did you know that the FIRST Black chamber of commerce was started in Dallas, Texas in 1926? Keep in mind this was only five years after Tulsa’s Black Wall Street was firebombed into oblivion for simply being successful in business. Nine years later, in 1935, Houston’s Black business community gave birth to the nation’s second Black chamber, the Houston Citizen’s Chamber of Commerce (now the Greater Houston Black Chamber). Here’s the good part: Just a year later, in 1936, the leaders of the Dallas Black Chamber and the Houston Citizen’s Chamber -- along with business men and women from across the state -- met in Dallas during the Texas Centennial celebration and formed the Texas State Negro Chamber of Commerce, the predecessor organization of the current Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce (TAAACC). Their commitment to the economic future of Black Texans spawned a network of chambers across the state, in big cities and small towns alike. From Texarkana to Corpus Christi to the Panhandle to Sherman-Denison (tiny Ennis still boasts their Ennis Negro Chamber, dating from 1947!) these businessmen and women went about the business of business. Their concerns, of course, were not only with profit making. These visionaries realized that to the extent that Black Texans could stabilize, develop and grow Black-owned businesses, we could employ community residents, maximize our political muscle and significantly improve public education. Sound familiar? Nearly 80 years later these simple goals continue to frustrate those of us in the business of Black business. Twenty-three chambers/ business organizations currently comprise TAAACC’s membership while four new chambers are in varying stages of development. All this activity indicates that – despite the difficulties associated with being Black in

business in Texas – there is still strong support for growing Black business with a goal of strengthening employment, political power and educational outcomes. In a renewed effort to reacquaint Black Texans with their historic connection to business development and reignite the passion that gave birth to America’s first Black chamber and first statewide business organization, the Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce and the Texas Publishers Association have committed to doing our part to keep you abreast of issues impacting Blackowned business in our state. The publishers of Texas’ 26 Blackowned newspapers, businessmen and women in an industry that has been hit especially hard by social media and the “Digital Age,” are still Black Texas’ most reliably trustworthy source of information affecting our lives. Clear, distortion-free communication is absolutely

critical to the growth, development and expansion of Texas’ Black-owned businesses and we are elated about the prospects our working together will mean for Black businesses in our state. Well before the 2020 census, Texas will have the 2nd largest Black population among the 50 states. Pitifully, even in this state’s dynamic economy, Black Texans lag behind in business receipts, political power, employment and educational attainment -- even after nearly 80 years of effort to improve these outcomes. I am optimistic that Black Texans will make the connection between where and how they spend their hard-earned money and the difficulties we continue to experience in other areas. I know we can, because brave men and women came together in 1936 when no hotel would sell them a room, no restaurant would seat them and they couldn’t try on a suit unless they bought it first… their answer: have your own hotel, restaurant and clothing store. Seems like the perfect time to go “back to the future…”

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FIX OUR SCHOOLS By Royce West One of my key responsibilities as a Senator is to ask questions about the hundreds of new laws and proposed changes that pass through the Legislature each session to ensure we will accomplish what is best for Texas. But when I come home and spend time with the residents of District 23, I become the one who answers the questions and, for many years now, one of the questions I heard most often was "when are we going to fix our schools?" In my view, we are long past the time for the answer to be a single word - now. As a long-time advocate and champion of public education, I want to send a clear message that I will no longer support mediocrity from low-performing schools. The challenge of educating our children has reached a critical point. There are currently nearly 150,000 young Texans assigned to failing schools. Every day that passes without a solution moves those students towards academic uncertainty. That cycle must be broken and I believe there is an innovative approach that we must consider. The establishment of a statewide turnaround district, currently being debated in the Texas Legislature, will give us the ability to make a meaningful intervention in chronically failing schools. Giving the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner the authority to create and oversee a statewide turnaround district will also send a message to school districts that we are serious about turning failing campuses into successful ones. We have been patient and we have tried lots of strategies, but ultimately, our priority is the
child and I believe every child has a right to a quality education. The statewide turnaround district will serve as the equivalent of an Intensive Care Unit for those schools, staffed by public school teachers and specialists who have a track record working with public school campuses that are in big trouble. They can offer the kind of specialized attention that makes a difference. Currently, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has four options to deal with a failing school. TEA can "reconstitute" it by replacing staff or "repurpose" it by changing the campus specialty and focus. Or, TEA can hire education experts to operate the campus, with the final option being closure. A statewide turnaround district adds another meaningful intervention option or as I like to say "another tool in the toolbox" to retool chronically low performing schools. Implementing this turnaround process in Texas will ensure the dreams of young Texans and the families who want the best for them are not only preserved, but also energized by genuine opportunity. I have supported public schools during the entire 22 years I have served in the Texas Senate and my commitment to Texas public school system is stronger than ever. However, my patience with promises and studies is wearing thin because many children are aging out of school every year without receiving the educational opportunities they deserve. A statewide turnaround district is not a silver bullet that will magically fix our schools - there is no such thing - but it will provide immediate and focused help to those failing schools where too many of our children have been stuck for far too long. It will also send a message to those schools that "help is on the way" to get them back on track. Our children cannot wait. We must take steps to fix our failing schools now.

JOHNSON: Half a century of Head Start

“Project Head Start” was launched by President Lyndon B. Johnson on May 18, 1965. Originally designed as an eight week summer demonstration project, Head Start has expanded into an array of preschool programs that provide children from low-income families with a comprehensive program that prepares
them for successful entry into kindergarten, and illuminates the pathway towards a brighter future. Educational experts view Head Start as our nation’s most comprehensive and effective program that prepares children for school. With the participation of parents, Head Start includes education, nutrition and health services for children from impoverished backgrounds and their families. In the past 50 years, approximately 25 million of our nation’s children have benefited as participants in Head Start environments. Nearly 72,000 children and their families were beneficiaries of Head Start programs in 2014. I am pleased that 4,068 of those who were served reside in the 30th Congressional District of Texas, which I am honored to serve. Head Start is instrumental in uplifting families in Texas and throughout our nation, providing them with resources that allow children to reach their full potential. Educators and social scientists alike believe that participants in Head Start are
more likely to earn their high school diplomas, continue on to college and become self-reliant wage earners than are those who do not have the early childhood development experience that the program affords. This success is possible because of the access to services that Head Start provides to children. It is extremely important that during this critical period in our nation’s history, we increase our support and expand the Head Start program. Every child in America should be afforded an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their race or their socio-economic background. President Obama recently called on all Americans, including leaders of private and philanthropic organizations, as well as leaders on the city, state and county levels, to make earnest investments in our next generation of thinkers, dreamers and doers. The development of young people today ensures our democracy in the future. We cannot afford not to act.
We can help hardworking, lowincome families build pathways that lead them and their children out of poverty. With our assistance they can become members of the middle class. If our society is serious about giving children brighter futures, we must increase our investment in Head Start programs so that more children can participate. Now is the time to expand upon the vision of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the “Great Society” programs that resulted in the creation of Head Start. We must close the opportunity gap that so many children in our country unfairly face. We must give them a chance to succeed. It is in their best interest and in the larger society’s best interest as well.

Britt urges voters to choose Casey Thomas Frontrunner in District 3 race receives key endorsement for run-off election Heading into the run-off election, after a hotly-contested race to fill the District 3 seat currently held by Dallas City Council member Vonciel Jones Hill, frontrunner Casey Thomas continues to garner support with the recent endorsement by one of his challengers in the May 9, 2015 election. Joining Team Thomas is business executive and pastor, Gerald Britt, Jr., who praised Thomas as he encouraged voters to join him in ensuring the educator a seat on the Council. "Casey Thomas has earned the opportunity to serve District 3 and the city of Dallas,” said Rev. Britt. “He is the best choice in this election to represent our interest on the city council. I'll be casting my vote for him and urge you to do so as well."A school teacher in the Dallas ISD, Thomas has a strong history of leadership and coalition building. A native Dallasite, he attended Dallas ISD schools and graduated from
Skyline High School. A graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of business administration degree, he served as Vice President of the Progressive Black Student Organization and also was elected to the Student Government Association. While a student at UNT, Thomas became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. (Zeta Upsilon chapter) and he helped to charter the National Pan-Hellenic Council on the campus. He also laid the groundwork for expanding the Buddy System, a student mentoring program that is designed to increase retention of students of color. After graduation, he became an educator. He has spent his career in education, working in Cedar Hill ISD and Dallas ISD. While in Dallas ISD, he established the Young Men of Distinction Male mentoring program, at A. Maceo Smith High School in 2000. He also is the President and CEO of CLT Consulting, an educational and

as a deacon and the Sunday School Superintendent at True Lee Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas. Thomas was the youngest President of the Dallas branch of the NAACP in the ninety year history of the organization. Under his leadership, several community partnerships were formed. He also has served on the Mountain Vista II homeowner association board, and he currently serves as the crime watch chair for his neighborhood. He served on the City of Dallas Community Development Commission for 10 years, most recently as the chair. He writes a weekly column in The Dallas Examiner. Thomas is married to LaKisha Thomas, an assistant principal at an elementary school. They are the parents of two sons, Chad and Cornell West Thomas. Early voting begins on June 1 and will run through June 9. Election day is on June 13, 2015.

But he was treated by Duncanville officers differently than any private citizen suspected of homicide would have been treated. Veteran actress wins award for role on The Haves and Have Nots It was a big night at the 40th annual Gracie Awards with actress Tracee Ellis Ross as the host and actress Cicely Tyson receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, while other honorees included Iyanla VanZant, actress Julia Roberts, talk show host Robin Roberts and Isha Sesay for Outstanding Anchor-News or News Magazine - CNN. But the highlight for Floridians, Florida A&M University alumni, students and friends, as well as media mogul Tyler Perry’s fans, was the honor bestowed upon Angela Robinson - Outstanding Female Actor- One to Watch OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network/ The Haves and The Have Nots. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Robinson attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl., where she also reigned as Miss FAMU. Following her graduation from FAMU, where she actually had another successful actress -- T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh of In Living Color and That’s So Raven fame, as a roommate; the multi-talented singer, actress and dancer began her professional acting career appearing in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and performing in several popular shows, including The Color Purple, Dreamgirls and The Wizard of Oz. Dallas Can Academy students receive donated makeovers
The 20 senior girls at Dallas Can Academy’s Oak Cliff campus received an unforgettable experience with makeovers for their senior prom donated by local makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and more. Each girl had her hair styled, makeup applied and keepsake photographs made from noon to 4 p.m. before their high school prom. Each student chose from a selection of donated jewelry to match her dress and wear to the dance. Volunteers will arrive at the school to offer each graduating senior girl a full makeover and pre-prom pampering experience. Refreshments and music were served to add to the festivities and allow the students to relax and soak in the experience with their classmates and friends. The girls returned home to change into their prom dresses before their big night at Gilley’s Dallas. Nonprofit group, Fit and Faithful Living, sponsored the event. Along with their committee members, Fit and Faithful Living offered to gather professionals to

create a day of glamour and fun for the soon-to-be high school graduates after LaChanda Dupard, executive director of Fit and Faithful Living, recently met one of the senior girls and learned of the need for some preprom pampering for the girls attending the senior dance. Senior student Ta’Liyah Edwards met Dupard at a recent school event and described her dream to one day own a salon. Ms. Edwards also explained that most of her classmates couldn’t afford to get their hair and makeup done before their prom. When Dupard heard this she knew she had to do something to provide these young women the opportunity to go to their prom being proud of how they looked. Offering the chance to provide professional primping aligns with her nonprofit’s mission to provide healthy mental balance in individual lives. Local celebrity makeup artist Bridgett LaDawn and a team of volunteers from GlamourRX, Inc. have volunteered to provide the day of glamour for the girls.

"Fit and Faithful Living's mission is to provide healthy mental balance in individual lives, this includes boosting confidence,” said LaChanda Dupard. “The reason we agreed to assist these young women is to promote a spirit of confidence and exposure to professionals that will encourage them! I'm sure this experience will also inspire Ta'Liyah to follow her dream of becoming a salon owner!" Most of the girls have fought obstacles to overcome barriers to earn their high school diplomas and these volunteers wanted to offer them a day of pampering and beauty to boost their confidence for their special dance. Dallas Can students often require support beyond their classroom and this generous “day of beauty” will create lasting memories for their special night. Fit and Faithful Living believes in providing opportunities of change for women and girls to see themselves in a new light.

There are several universal principles in life that nobody can refute. The opposite of hot is cold. If you know good, you have to acknowledge evil. For every up, there is a down. As a matter of fact, the reality of opposites lets us know there should be expectancy in life that forces us to act a certain way. This affirmative action, of which I speak, allows you to understand and act accordingly, when you know you’re dealing with the truth as opposed to a lie. My example would be a child’s knowledge of Santa Claus. As the truth becomes known, instantly the child acts with the knowledge that he knows that he knows that he knows. The perspective I am trying to get you to see and react to here is the truth of lost and found.

All I’m trying to say is when you finally get it, there’s only one place to go; home. And in this case home is where God is. The way was prepared by Christ who, like a homing beacon, shows us all how to find ourselves and thus be found. If you’ve ever been truly lost, you know the exhilaration you feel when you finally figure it out and get going in the right direction. My point is simple. As the kids say, you better recognize! Being lost is not the issue. Having enough sense to know it and do something about it is. I promise you the moment you begin to look for the Lord He will find you. It’s not like God lost you. It kind of gives new meaning to Lost & Found. May God bless and keep you always.

Memorial Day Weekend Kickoff Happy Hour By Dallas Socialite Amanda Fitzpatrick
Memorial Day Happy Hour kick off event, was hosted by Dallas Cowboys Sports Reporter Clarence Hill Jr, CBS Sports Anchor Guy Rawlings, and me, Media Personality Amanda Fitzpatrick Hundreds came out to show their support for a worthy cause. When Clarence Hill Jr. and DJ Gumbo asked myself and CBS Sports Anchor Guy Rawlings to co-host the Memorial Day Happy Hour Charity at aLOFT XYZ bar I couldn't pass it up! The event was meant to have fun but also raise awareness about Veterans in need. They decided to bring together dozens of people to donate shoes for the Dallas Veterans Resource Center. Many purchased shoes and donated the to the cause. Others brought gently worn shoes, and/or cash donations.
