Washington, DC - Expressing absolute agreement with National Football League (NFL) Commissioner Roger Goodell that he "got it wrong," the Black Women's Roundtable Public Policy Network (BWR) held a press conference today to urge the commissioner to take swift action to "get it right," starting by appointing black women experts in domestic violence and sexual assault to the recently established Domestic Violence Advisory Board. "The fact that not one of the women experts appointed to the advisory board was Black is totally unacceptable," said Melanie L. Campbell, president and CEO, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and convener, BWR. "Nearly 70 percent of the NFL players are Black and most of the victims are Black women and children. Clearly, Black women understand the social construct and cultural sensitivities of the victims as well as the young players from Members of the Black Women's Roundtable PHOTO CREDITS: Paulette Singleton. our community and can advise the NFL accordingly." "Victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse are our daughters, granddaughters and sisters, we are here to support them," adds Marcia Dyson, CEO and Founder, Women's Global Initiative."We don't want anyone to believe that Black men are the poster boys for domestic violence. These young men are our sons and brothers. Many of them went through school as star athletes and came out without the proper boundaries." The women say the nature of the game of football promotes violence. They believe that since NFL makes millions off a violent sport, they should take more responsibility for some of the violence and commit to funding holistic, family-oriented counseling, training and prevention programs. Noting that violence in the NFL is a reflection of the broader society, Campbell adds, "It's not just Goodell who needs to get it right. The owners, coaches, and others in management must take the lead in the quest to eradicate violence in the NFL, other sports and, since so many young people look up to athletes, in the broader community. The NFL needs to step up given their role in society." "The NFL's advisory team must include Black women with a demonstrated expertise in the development and implementation of culturally specific services, policies, and programs addressing domestic violence and sexual assault in the Black community, said Karma Cottman, executive director, DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence. "The NFL must also include domestic and sexual violence organizations that are by and for the Black community among the NFL's organizational advisors." The women provided details about specific actions they will take over the next few weeks to elevate the voices of Black women in the conversation about domestic violence in the NFL, other sports, and the broader issue of domestic violence nationally. Actions include: Creation of an online petition (http://tinyurl.com/ll6cnw7) urging Commissioner Roger Goodell to immediately include Black women as external domestic violence experts on the NFL's Domestic Violence Advisory Board. Launch of a social media campaign that will include twitter town hall meetings featuring celebrities. The first twitter town hall will take place Tuesday September 30, 2014 at 2 PM ET. (Hashtag #NFLgetitright). Outreach to BWR partners to write letters to the NFL supporting the BWR initiative. Provide recommendations on Black women experts and Black organizations. BWR and partners will meet with corporations who sponsor the NFL Meet with Ana Isaacson and Troy Vincent to plan a larger meeting to address domestic violence, sexual assault and other diversity issues plaguing the NFL. (Set for October 1st in NY) Meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as requested in the BWR open letter. On September 16, 2014 BWR sent an open letter to a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting an emergency meeting with him to address the fact that there are no black women included in the recently established advisory group of women appointed to assist in developing new policies to eradicate domestic violence within the NFL. To date, our request to meet with Commissioner Goodell has not been scheduled. "BWR expects that the commissioner and leadership of each of the 32 teams in the NFL will increase their diversity acumen and demonstrate cultural competence," offers RenĂŠ Redwood, CEO, Redwood Enterprise, LLC. "Culturally competent people know how to take advantage of teachable moments, how to ask questions without offending, and how to create an environment that is welcoming to diversity and to change." Rev. Barbara Williams-Skinner, PhD, National African American Clergy Network, concludes, "It's not just a health, criminal, business or human issue, it's a moral issue." Congresswoman hosts Community Appreciation Day On Saturday, September 13th, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson hosted her 22nd annual Community Appreciation Day at Lancaster Community Park in Lancaster, Texas, one of the many cities in the 30th Congressional District of Texas. Nearly 250 residents from the 30th Congressional District attended the four-hour event that centered on activities for “healthy living.” During the event, residents were entertained by a number of dance groups reminiscent of the diverse communities which make up the 30th district. In honor of this year’s appreciation day theme, attendees participated in a special presentation on “healthy living” presented by Marvin R.

Young, a health and wellness educator from Prairie View AandM University. In addition, two young district students, Aha Beachman and David Williams, were also recognized. David Williams was honored for demonstrating outstanding youth leadership, and Aha Beachman was recognized as an accomplished student pilot. Congresswoman Johnson is seen as the matriarch of her district. For more than 20 years, she has nurtured the district and guided it through thoughtful redevelopment initiatives aimed at social, cultural and economic revitalization. “We hold these events, because it is a way to say ‘thank you’ to people of District 30,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Our district is very diverse, and you can see that by

the various ethnic groups represented here today. Diversity is one of our strengths.” Through annual community events, like the Youth Crime Summit and the Women in Small Business Summit, Congresswoman Johnson works tirelessly to ensure that the needs of her constituents are met. Lancaster Mayor, Marcus Knight, thanked Congresswoman Johnson for her work on behalf of the citizens of his city. “We are very appreciative for everything that you have done and will continue to do for residents of Lancaster,” he said. Mayor Knight's remarks were echoed by DeSoto Mayor, Carl Sherman, who also attended the event. “There are very few members of Congress who work as hard as Congresswoman Johnson does for the residents of her District,” said Mayor Sherman, where last year’s Community Appreciation Day was held.

Obama Dropped A Bomb!!! Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent Hall is an award-winning columnist and author.

Although President Barack Hussein Obama has been lauded for his ability to render solvent speeches laced with significant salvos, his impassioned soliloquy at the United Nations this week was easily his best. As the President urged the world to understand America’s leadership of the latest war, (and yes ladies and gentlemen, we are at WAR), he covertly spoke against that grand notion of “American Exceptionalism.” Obama’s last 400 plus words provides a road map to peace at home and abroad. He honored First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s mission to have America lead the United Nations by example. “ I realize that America's critics will be quick to point out that at times we have failed to live

America's not the same as it was 100 years ago or 50 years ago or even a decade ago, because we fight for our ideals and are willing to criticize ourselves when we fall short. We hold our leaders accountable and insist on a Free Press and an Independent Judiciary. We address our differences in the open space of democracy with respect for the rule of law’ with a place for people of every race and religion, and with an unyielding belief in the ability of individual men and women to change their communities and their circumstances and the countries for the better.

This speech was bold and brilliant. It was ambitious but not ambiguous. This 40 minute symposium in peace was panoramic and prolific. But more than anything, this address was promising. We must pray that this President uses his last two years to speak to the American people and

deliver an equally persuasive speech. At some point American has to spend its resources to bomb the enemies of racism, ignorance and imperialism at home in order to justify the billions we are about to expend to bomb the Middle East. This speech was the BOMB!!

After nearly six years as president, I believe that this promise can help light the world. Because I have seen a longing for positive change, for peace and for freedom

This speech was the BOMB!! up to our ideals. That America has plenty of problems within its own borders. In A summer marked by instability in the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, the world also took notice of a small American city, Ferguson Missouri, were a young man was killed and the community was divided. So yes we have our own racial and ethnic tensions. And like every country we continually wrestle with how to reconcile the vast changes wrought by globalization and greater diversity with the traditions we hold dear; but we welcome the scrutiny of the world. Because what you see in America is a country that has steadily worked to address our problems, to make our union more perfect. To bridge the divides that existed at the founding of this nation. PAGE 6

and for opportunity and for the end to bigotry, in the eyes of young people whom I have met around the globe. They remind me that no matter whom you are, where you come from or what you look like or what God you pray to or who you love; there is something fundamental that we all share. The people of the world now look to us here, to be as decent and as dignified and as courageous as they are trying to be in their daily lives. At this crossroads I can promise you that United States will not be distracted or deterred from what must be done. We are heirs to a proud legacy of freedom and we are prepared to do what's necessary to secure that legacy for generations to come. I ask that you join us in this mission, for today's children, and for tomorrow's.” !

Big Giving for Small Nonprofits: How to Leave Your Legacy with Impact Contributed Article By Gretchen Barry

While no one likes reminders of their mortality, there are some decisions that you can make today that will leave a lasting good long after your time on Earth. One of the most important steps you can take now is to choose a smaller, community-based organization to gift a portion of your remaining assets. Stories of Giving Recently, I was reading the print edition of my small-town’s newspaper, and on the front page, I came across a story about a “modest” gentleman who passed away recently and bequeathed nearly $250,000 to a small music program in the mountains near my home. It was a lovely gesture since this organization does not typically receive these types of legacy gifts. This gentleman, though an avid attendee of the music program’s concerts, hadn’t donated money to this organization in years. As a result, this gift came as a complete, yet thrilling, surprise to the program - and that’s precisely what makes it so great. Another of my favorite stories of giving is that of Oseola McCarty; the laundress, who left $150,000, her entire life savings, to the University of Southern Mississippi. Given her modest earnings and the fact that Ms. McCarty quit school in the sixth grade, nobody on the planet, except maybe her banker, knew she had that kind of cash to leave behind. Small Charities. Big Impact. According to Giving USA, The Annual Report on Philanthropy, adjusted for inflation, total charitable giving rose 3.0 percent over 2012. That’s great news! But I have always been intrigued by where people choose to leave their legacy, It is one of the last things we do, and it can be one of the most impactful final acts for family or a favorite charity. These kinds of stories give me pause for thought; although my husband and I are far from wealthy, we are financially comfortable, and it is likely that we will have assets with which to leave our legacy. But when it comes to where we leave our legacy, my husband and I are bucking the trend; we have made a conscious decision to focus our legacy away from larger, more popular, charitable organizations. I know they do great work, but there are thousands of smaller organizations who are doing good in the world, but struggle to keep the lights on. PAGE 8

!

Smaller organizations deserve just as much attention as the larger nonprofits, but unlike these large entities that have the budgets to run national fundraising drives, smaller charities struggle with resource constraints. It is personally reassuring to consider that these smaller organizations will benefit more deeply from what my husband and I leave behind. Our somewhat modest gift can make a huge impact on their mission. Consider this: $100,000 won’t go very far in a big organization with hundreds of staff across the globe, and multiple expenses. But, imagine what $100,000 could do for a school in your community, or your local food bank. Understanding The Smaller Organizations As marketing director for a tech company focused on the nonprofit sector, I feel fortunate that I have access to hundreds of small community-based nonprofits and the people who manage them. Every day I get to see first-hand how these organizations are changing lives. I love my work because my company is part of the sphere of good, happening in communities around the country. But what I also see is how these organizations struggle each day to support their missions. And when the vast majority of their time is spent fundraising rather than delivering their services, something needs to change. That’s where leaving a personal legacy can have a tremendous impact.

5. Add the organization to your will or trust. Make sure to include any special instructions directing how the funds are to be used. Note: I caution against a request that prohibits the funds from being used for administrative purposes. It’s the administrative functions that make the mission happen and too many organizations are hamstrung by those types of requests. Wouldn’t it be cool if someone directed an organization to use part of their bequeath to fund an annual thank you party for staff and volunteers, or to focus the funds on technology or building upgrades for the organization?

Just like Oseola McCarty, you have the power to support whatever mission is important to you. Consider directing a portion of your estate to a struggling mission and ultimately to those who benefit from that mission. You can still provide for your family and larger organizations with your legacy funds, just consider including at least one community-based mission. Leaving a legacy that helps others long after we are gone can change the lives of those in need. Gretchen Barry is director of marketing and communications for NonProfitEasy, a technology company challenging the status quo for the greater good. She can be reached at gretchen.barry@nonprofiteasy.com.

How To Give Big To Small Organizations: Your Legacy Field Guide 1. If you don’t already have a list of organizations in mind, do a little research. Ask friends, family members or coworkers for their favorite charities. Check your local paper, your city’s website or even contact local law enforcement or social service agency.

Inside the 234

2. Next, look for organizations with operating budgets less than $1 million. These are the hyper-focused missions that can benefit the most from your gift. 3. Identify the causes on your list that are important to you. This should be the easy part. Is it animal welfare, education, homelessness, health care, the environment, or something else? The options are endless. 4. Narrow your list by determining what you believe will benefit your community the most. It doesn’t necessarily mean that their work only serves your community, but it does mean that the community as a whole benefits from its work or its presence.

Real Walk. Real Talk By James A. Washington I once took a bible study class called, “Taking the Word into the World.” The premise was that those of us with a Christian belief system should be doing something, acting in some way that distinguishes us in how we are looked upon on this human plane of existence. For me, at the time, it was somewhat confusing because how many of us really know and understand where we fit in God’s kingdom? One of my more anointed friends constantly reminds me that God’s plan for you and me is not very complicated at all. We make it more complex than it needs to be and the devil revels in our self imposed intellectual morass. How often have you questioned your purpose, your mission, you ministry or your duty to the Lord? I know, more often than not, I wind up doing nothing in the name of God because I have confused myself by questioning what I should be doing. Now the devil loves this stuff. The mere questioning keeps me from doing anything and I’m the one asking the questions. The answer is clearly stated in Ephesians 2:10. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to

Spiritually Speaking do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Simple question. Simple answer. Do good works. It’s the Christian playbook. Maybe it’s just me but I believe we can all tell the difference between good works and bad works. It is not a confusing concept i.e. not complicated. I have no business procrastinating about doing good works. As a matter of fact, scripture reminds me that this work is indeed prepared for us to do in advance. It is our spiritual destiny, if not our duty, to perform good works that will always present themselves to us as opportunities to help others. Now here comes the easy to understand hard to do part. If, and only if, we accept the Word of God as the

Will of God, can we understand how to react to this crazy world in which we live. Show your love for God, your neighbor and yourself. “Be very careful then, then, how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Ephesians 5: 15-17. My mission as a Christian is to do good works. My mission as a man of God is to do good works. Wow, this is becoming easier and easier. God is not a God of confusion. And if I just stay out of my own mind, and stay out of my own way, I’ll be just fine. As complicated as I make it sound in my search for purpose, my Christian

game plan takes on “action status” when I get up in the morning and prepare to take on the day. When the opportunity presents itself (and it will because the devil will see to it), I am now programmed to make the right choice. I don’t need a specific thing to do. All I need to concern myself with is undergirding everything I do with the fundamental principle of goodness. My steps have been ordered because the intent for all I do cannot be misunderstood by me or anybody else. Now I may fall short. I will fall short. But falling short will not define me. Oh, to be recognized as a good person for what you do and not what you say. Oh to be recognized for at least trying to do God’s will. Take the Will of God and march into the world armed with the Word of God and maybe all of your questions will be answered too. I know a lot of mine have. May God bless and keep you always.

J.N. Ervin students to make lasting impression on new library Librarian Cheryl Franklin is on a mission to encourage her students to fall in love with the library. On Monday, Sept. 29, she will have a chance to cement that idea in the minds of her students at J.N. Ervin Elementary School. Franklin will conduct a field trip for 28 K-5 students to the city’s newest library, the Highland Hills Branch, at 6200 Bonnie View Road, blocks away from Ervin Elementary. The students aren’t just visiting the new site. They will leave a lasting impression of their handprints in the cement near the library entrance as part of a pre-opening ceremony. Dallas Councilman Tennell Atkins will speak to them about the importance of their families using the library as a learning resource, and branch manager Lee Detzel will take the students on a private tour of the 19,570-square-foot facility. Franklin said she’s preparing her students for the experience by teaching them about the library’s role as an important community service. She’s also emphasizing that their selection for the trip means they are representing their families and peers, and that the library opening is a cultural celebration to which they’re being specially invited. The new library will conduct a formal opening celebration for the entire community at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 18.

CDC confirms 10 cases of enterovirus -D68 Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) received confirmation today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of 10 cases positive for enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68). For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information. “We understand CDC is working nonstop to test specimens from all over the U.S. and we appreciate their support in confirming these cases as quickly as possible, said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director. “Now we know EV-D68, as well as other viruses, is circulating in Dallas County, so residents should take the proper precautions to avoid transmission. EV-D68 is one of many non-polio enteroviruses. This virus was first identified in California in 1962. EV-D68 can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. Mild symptoms may include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, and body and muscle aches. There is not a vaccine for EV-D68 and there is no specific treatment for respiratory illness caused by EV-D68. Since EV-D68 causes respiratory illness, the virus can be found in an infected person’s respiratory secretions, such as saliva, nasal mucus, or sputum. EV-D68 likely spreads from

person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or touches contaminated surfaces. In general, infants, children, and teenagers are most likely to get infected with enteroviruses and become ill. That's because they do not yet have immunity (protection) from previous exposures to these viruses. DCHHS Medical Director/Health

Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick Authority Dr. Christopher Perkins cautions all respiratory illnesses occurring right now are not EV-D68. This is the time of year when individuals experience more cold and flu-like symptoms.

“Respiratory illnesses can be caused by many dierent viruses and have similar symptoms,â€? said Dr. Perkins. “That’s why it’s important to get a flu shot, take steps to avoid getting sick, and see your medical provider whenever you are not feeling well so you can receive an appropriate diagnosis.â€? Individuals should practice the following prevention habits to avoid the risk of getting EV-D68: Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick DCHHS issued an EV-D68 health advisory to area medical providers and information to school nurses. Lincoln and FAMU alum named Omega Man of the Year

Royle King II has been recognized as the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Florida Statewide Organization 2013-14 “Omega Man of the Year.” The award is the highest individual award presented by the fraternity. It is given out at a chapter level, state, district and then for the entire organization. This is presented to a “brother who has made extraordinary contributions to his Chapter, the 7th District and the International level of the Fraternity. The OMOY is a brother who has made significant contributions to humanity and his community. Royle, a 2013 finalist for the “Tallahassee Volunteer of the Year” presented by the Tallahassee Democrat believes that it’s important for us to give back and remain humble. “I promise if I never won any award I would still go as hard and love it the same. I’m honored to receive the recognition or any that comes because it says what you’re doing is not average, but you are making a major impact and changing lives.” He is the current “Superior Service” award winner for Omega Psi Phi’s Seventh District (Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama). He was first recognized by the Chi Omega chapter (graduate) in Tallahassee, then the state of Florida then the district. The Seventh District is the largest member district in the fraternity. “God is good! But this is my job, I have to serve our community and give back. I’m a direct reflection of that. If it wasn’t for Omega Psi Phi and my Father I would not be the man I am today. I have to give back, it was done for me.” In 2008 Royle started a mentoring program, the Omega Lamplighters Club, a young men’s mentoring program to transform boys to men teach them how to be successful. He was still an undergraduate student at FAMU during the time and was serving as the Basileus (president) of the Upsilon Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi. The program has since taken off in the Tallahassee community and has been modeled throughout the fraternity all over the United States and as far as Italy.

I’ve been doing this since ‘08 and the recognition is just now coming. It’s not about that for me. It’s about saving our kids. If only one becomes successful and helps one kid I would be happy that means the cycle continues. Texas Basketball Coach’s life gets big screen treatment “Relentless: The Story of Robert Hughes may be the most important untold story in the 121 year history of basketball.” -- Robert Hughes owned basketball in Fort Worth, Texas for 47 seasons, winning 1333 games and surpassing everyone else who ever coached boys high school basketball. Even those high school coaches already on the pantheon —Hurley, Wooten and Tasker— didn’t achieve as much. Yet, outside of Texas few have heard of Coach Hughes, nor grasp the significance of his accomplishments and gifts to the basketball. A group of Texas filmmakers are about to remedy this by bringing a feature length documentary about Hughes to a global audience. The name of the film is Relentless. In addition to the 1333 victories, Hughes won eight state championships, multiple conference championships while changing the lives of thousands of students at Dunbar and throughout Fort Worth. Dallas journalist Chris Arnold called Hughes “our very own version of UCLA’s John Wooden.” ESPN reporter Damon Sayles said, “if Hughes’ accomplishments had occurred on the East Coast, and not under the long shadow of Texas football, he would be in the Naismith Hall of Fame.” Lindell Singleton (Lone Star, Holy War, Texas Rangers: A Baseball Love Story, History of the Red River Rivalry) will direct and produce Relentless. He says: “This is a story that conveys genuine human drama and conflict—it’s a sports story and so much more.” “At a precarious time in our nation's history — the period of school desegregation — Coach Hughes stood as a defining and calming voice bridging communities, bringing Texans together. He worked behind the scenes to make sure that integration didn’t bring inequities to the black players and coaches,” added Singleton. According to the producers, the Southwest Conference’s choice to deny opportunities to black high school basketball athletes for more 50 years had a dramatic impact on the athletics in the state. Hughes navigated around the SWC’s restrictive polices and galvanized relationships with the Big Ten, Pacific 8 and Missouri Valley Conferences to ensure his players both graduated, qualified and received opportunities to play beyond high school.

Framed with interviews with journalists, former players and coaches while blending neverbefore- seen archival footage and narrative reenactments, Relentless provides a window into aspects of Texas sports history never before presented-- including the parallel story of the ‘colored-only’ Prairie View Interscholastic League (P.V.I.L) which is equal parts triumph and bitter sadness. Relentless will receive a theatrical premiere in Fort Worth in February, 2015 and a broadcast premiere the week of the Texas state high school basketball championship tournament. Ronald Nance, a Dallas-based cinematographer, secured the rights to the story and has been developing the project for the last two years along with Singleton. Carlton McConnell, Round The Clock Entertainment’s CEO, will co-executive produce Relentless. Media 13 Studios will handle production and distribution. With more than eight hours of footage already ‘in-the-can,’ the Producers are embracing the crowd funding entity IndieGogo (http://igg.me/at/ relentless-the-documentary) as a strategy to secure remaining production and post production dollars to meet the February release target. •watch movie trailer w/below link• !

Mother-in-law cautious over previous death of child Dear Alma: My mother-in-law is highly anxious. She frequently tells my husband and me (late 20s) to be careful, and she begs us never to do anything that will bring us harm. She recently emailed my husband’s best friend to be careful during a party, begging him not to let anything happen because my husband is all she has left. She experienced the loss of her daughter 11 years ago. I don’t know how to prevent her anxiety from affecting my life, and I’m becoming resentful.

Ask Alma My husband’s approach is, “That is just how mama is.” I want to set some boundaries. What should I say? -R.B., Atlanta Dear R.B: “Claudy, have mercy, Girl,

please!” Your mother-in-law lost a daughter. Boundaries? Are you kidding me? Where is your compassion? I pray that you never experience the death of a child. That’s simply your mother inlaw’s way of saying, “I love you, and

I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you, too.” Just say, “Ok, Mama,” or “I will, Mama,” and call it a day. She’s not at your house picking out your husband’s socks each morning. Now that would be a problem. That, my sistah, is a boundary. You’ve got to pick your battles when you’re married, especially with in-laws. You want to fix her, and you want her to be over her grief. That will never happen. What should you say, you ask? Absolutely nothing.

Holder resigns

SEPTEMBER 26, 2014

NAACP Statement on the Resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder WASHINGTON, D.C. – Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to resign after six years at the helm of the Department of Justice. The NAACP has released the following statement. From Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President and CEO: "The resignation of the most prepared and the most steadfast Attorney General, in particular in the arena of civil rights, is a moment of lament for the nation but also celebration. We celebrate his achievements but we also grieve his absence. From voting rights, civil rights to criminal justice reform, Attorney General Holder's record from the vantage point of history and the view of citizens across the country is unassailable and will be enduring." From Hilary O. Shelton, Sr. Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, Washington Bureau Director: “Attorney General Eric Holder has been the best qualified attorney general in the United States. His leadership, courage and his unrivaled commitment to justice for all people, especially communities of color will certainly be missed. The progress the Department of Justice made under his leadership, most especially on civil rights, is unlike anything we have seen in generations. As attorney general, he has never been fearful of raising the issue of race. From protecting voters from over restrictive new voting laws that disproportionately affect communities of color and the elderly, to launching 20 investigations of abuses by local police departments like Ferguson, Mo., Attorney General Eric Holder has stood up for Americans who could not stand up for themselves. We applaud his great work.”

Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) released the following statement in response to Attorney General Eric Holder’s announcement that he will be resigning from the Department of Justice: "The resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder is a great loss for our country. As one of the Obama Administration’s leading progressive voices, Attorney General Holder led the charge in support of same-sex marriage, protecting our voting rights, and addressing the inequities in our criminal justice system. As the first African-American to serve as Attorney General, his honorable legacy of justice is nothing less than historic. "I have faith that President Obama will nominate a successor who not only shares Attorney General Holder's commitment to social justice, but one who will follow in his footsteps in tackling the pressing issues facing Americans today. "From defending our country against acts of terror to protecting us against those who continue to target our civil rights, we owe Attorney General Holder our sincerest gratitude for his dedicated service to our nation. I wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors."

Washington, DC – Texas Republican Congressman, Kevin Brady, Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee and senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement regarding the news that United States Attorney General Eric Holder is announcing his resignation: “Enforcing the laws of our nation is the chief job of the U.S. Attorney General and Eric Holder has repeatedly refused to do so. Holder leaves behind a record that includes ignoring the clearly unlawful behavior of IRS employee Lois Lerner, illegal gun-running to Mexican drug cartels and being held in contempt by the U.S. House of Representatives. This is why I and several other Republican House members called for his resignation a long time ago. His resignation is great news for the American people and we can only hope that the President nominates a successor who will be interested in enforcing all of the laws of our land, and not just the ones that are politically expedient for the White House.” !

Dallas Mayor hosts Father and Son Pancake Breakfast Saturday, October 4, 2014 9-10:30 a.m. Sheraton Dallas Hotel 400 N. Olive Street For years domestic violence has typically been viewed as a women’s issue that is all too often excused, overlooked or denied. But the reality is that over 85 percent of all domestic violence transgressions are committed by men. In Dallas alone, nearly 13,000 domestic violence cases are filed every year. This is not only shocking but unacceptable. It is time to change the misogynistic culture that has become the societal norm. It is time to teach our sons to be men, to treat the women in our lives with respect. It is our responsibility, as men, to get off the sidelines and declare that one act of violence is one act too many. On October 4, Mayor Rawlings is hosting a Father and Son Pancake Breakfast sponsored by Verizon at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel .The keynote will be delivered by Victor Rivers, a leading national activist who serves as a spokesperson for the National Network to End Domestic Violence. Admission is complimentary, just RSVP to rsvp.mayormike@dallascityhall.com. PAGE 19

Attorney General Holder announces $2.6 million in grants for domestic violence homicide prevention WASHINGTON—Attorney General Eric Holder announced Monday that the Justice Department has selected four sites to receive a total of $2.6 million in grants to implement promising models aimed at reducing domestic violence homicides. Over the next two years, these sites—Pitt County, North Carolina; Cuyahoga County, Ohio; Contra Costa County, California; and the Borough of Brooklyn, New York—will institute screening models and evidence-based strategies that will allow them to anticipate potentially lethal behavior, take steps to stop the escalation of violence, and – ultimately – save lives. The National Institute of Justice will conduct an evaluation of the models in each of the selected sites to identify the key components needed to successfully adapt the domestic violence homicide prevention models nationwide. “Domestic violence is more than Eric Holder a crime against just the victim,” said Attorney General Holder in a video message posted on the Justice Department’s website. “It is a crime against all of us as a society. And our collective response must treat it as such.” The complete text of the Attorney General’s video message is below: “Domestic violence is a devastating crime that claims far too many lives. Studies have shown that, on average, three women die every day in America at the hands of their partner or ex-partner. PAGE 20

!

“And from 2009 to 2012, 40 percent of mass shootings started with the killer targeting a girlfriend, wife, or ex-wife. “These are tragic and shocking statistics, and the Justice Department is working hard to bring an end to this horrific status quo. “Under the Violence Against Women Act, which was reauthorized last year, the Department of Justice is taking vital action to protect and empower women and partners who are being exploited and abused. Through our Office on Violence Against Women, we are working to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable by promoting a coordinated community response. And in the reauthorized Act, this Administration helped to secure important new protections for women in Indian Country, LGBT individuals, and others. “These are important achievements – but we must do more. That’s why, in 2013, I was proud to stand with Vice President Biden to unveil a new grant-funded initiative to help reduce domestic violence homicides. This funding provided twelve communities– in states across the country – with the opportunity to reduce domestic violence homicides by effectively identifying potential victims and monitoring high-risk offenders. “And today, I am pleased to announce that four sites have been selected to receive a total of $2.6 million to implement promising models aimed at reducing domestic violence homicides. In Pitt County, North Carolina; in Cuyahoga County, Ohio; in Contra

Costa County, California; and in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York – these two-year awards will make a tremendous difference, helping local officials to put their anti-violence initiatives into practice. “In that time, they will institute screening models and evidence-based strategies that will allow them to anticipate potentially lethal behavior, take steps to stop the escalation of violence, and – ultimately – save lives. These innovative programs can then be studied and replicated in order to protect those who are at risk – and stop would-be abusers – across the United States. “We have come a long way since the time when these incidents of abuse were considered private, household matters. But we have a ways to go still. Domestic violence is more than a crime against just the victim. It is a crime against all of us as a society. And our collective response must treat it as such. “Going forward, the Justice Department will continue to build our important efforts to end violence against women and girls – no matter who they are or where they live – because all Americans deserve to feel safe and secure in their homes, on their college campuses, and on the streets of our communities. “As we strive to end the epidemic of domestic and intimate partner violence, all of us have a great deal of work to do. But this Administration, this Department of Justice – and I personally – will not waver in that effort: to shine a light on violence and abuse; to protect and empower women; and to make domestic violence homicide a thing of the past.” The full video of the Attorney General’s message is available at http://www.justice.gov/agwa.php.

By Patrice J. Holmes

Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,

the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
