Message to the People... 2015, Another Summer Another school year comes to an end, at least for those in America.
Cheryl Smith
A time to chill. It’s like rap group Public Enemy says, “another summer.” Well, sadly just like in 1989, the year that Chuck D spoke of, in 2014, 25 years later; it was a violent summer -- one we shouldn’t want to repeat in 2015. Quit Playin
Many educators are exhaling and ready to enjoy a few months of relaxation; while unfortunately others are gearing up for a second tour of duty. That’s right, a summer job. The salary they bring home is just not enough to sustain their lifestyle without some form of subsidizing. Then there are the youth. It would be great to say that every child of a certain age would have some program or opportunity to keep them busy and not left to their own devices or wild, inquisitive imaginations.
In Memoriam 25 10
Whether they are working at a McDonald’s under the watchful eye of a mentor like Roland Parrish, or participating in programs at places like the South Dallas Cultural Center, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Heads Up! Foundation or one of the many Boys or Girls Clubs; our communities would be so much better. For some this will be a summer of growth and development, of fun and memories to cherish a lifetime. Some young people are fortunate that plans are made for them. Some will be visiting relatives, going away to camp or studying abroad.
14-year-old Emmett Till
Plans were made 60 years ago for Emmett Louis Till when his mother, like so many parents living in big cities would do, sent him south from Chicago to visit relatives in Money, Mississippi. Unfortunately she never saw her son again. He was brutally beaten and murdered by men, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam, who said that he whistled at a white woman.

His was a story no parents wants to tell. One of the most intense and gripping interviews that i have ever conducted was with Mrs. Mamie Till Bradley Mobley, and her husband Gene Bradley, who was Emmett’s barber back in Chicago. Decades later the pain of her son‘s brutal death was still painful to talk about. But more and more often, the stories are being told about the brutal deaths of young people. How about a moratorium this summer, that extends for eternity. It’s already been a rough year. America is dominating headlines around the world because of the number of deaths. Violence can’t and should not be the answer. Answers have to come by investing in our young. Have you made an investment yet?

JAZZ is in the air at WRR-FM WRR-FM, the station for classical music and the arts will launch a new jazz show on Sunday June 7th at 7:00 pm. Jazz at Fair Park will be a new weekly program that can be heard throughout North Texas at 101.1 FM or worldwide at wrr101.com. Jazz music will be added to the classical format because WRR views jazz as an American form of chamber music. This important musical genre has influenced generations of classical composers and performers just as jazz has been influenced by classical music. It is also a part of the fabric of American life and is closely interwoven with Broadway, television, film and most forms of popular music that appeals to the listeners of WRR. Jazz at Fair Park will be hosted by DFW-area arts & cultural expert and jazz aficionado Vicki Meek. The one hour show will feature occasional interviews, music and “live” performances by jazz musicians of note from the local area, Texas and around the world. Each month will feature a particular jazz style or period in history influenced by jazz music and musicians. This is the first full-length jazz program produced by WRR and one of the few available anywhere in the nation. Jazz at Fair Park is a reflection of the station’s commitment to bringing great music and art to all residents of its listening area. "I am so thrilled to be able to continue promoting jazz by hosting WRR's newest show, Jazz at Fair Park. I have been committed to sharing this music which Chamber Music America includes in the American classical music genre and what better place to do that than on Dallas' premier classical radio station. I hope all those classic jazz fans will tune in on Sundays to hear some great music - because that's what I promise to bring them," stated Vicki Meek. Jazz at Fair Park will be produced and broadcasted from the historic WRR studios in Fair Park. WRR is a program of the City of Dallas / Office of Cultural Affairs. For more information call (214) 670-8888. WRR 101.1 FM is a 24-hour classical music station; the only one of its kind in the State of Texas and is the oldest sameowner station in the United States. WRR was the first licensed broadcast station in Texas and one of the nation's five VICKI MEEK inaugural stations. Owned by the City of Dallas and operated by the Office of Cultural Affairs, the station was licensed in August 1921 and originally served as a Dallas Fire Rescue communications tool. When not fighting fires, the fire fighters blazed the broadcast trail by playing music. An integral component of the City of Dallas' commitment to providing arts access and opportunities to all its citizens, the 100,000 watt station broadcasts a digital signal with a 100 mile terrestrial reach and is streamed online at wrr101.com. WRR generates revenue through advertising to sustain its operations budget and maintains a capital improvement fund. For more information about chamber music log onto (www.chamber-music.org

JOHNSON: A salute to high school graduates
By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
It is an honor to congratulate all high school graduates in the Thirtieth Congressional District for successfully completing your high school education. It is a significant achievement in your life, and it represents another step in your quest
for knowledge. I am certain that your families and your teachers are extremely proud. Many of you will continue your studies in our nation’s colleges and universities. Some will become members of our military service, while others will pursue training that will provide you with skills that are so desperately needed in our society. Whatever the path you have chosen, I urge all of our graduates to make the search for knowledge a lifetime quest. Never give up on your dreams, even during times of difficulty and despair. Success will always be within your grasp. As students, you have developed great minds and determined wills. I urge you to be relentless in the pursuit of those things that have captivated your interests and your energies.

Continue to conceive new inventions, and develop new ideas that will help mold our world, and the lives of people who live in it. Our cities, our states, our nation and our world are in great need of your talent, your compassion, your determination, your ingenuity and your commitment to creating a better society. In years to come, you will be the leaders in our society, responsible for making decisions that will affect the lives of others. The teachers and administrators in your school have invested in you because they know that the future will be determined by decisions that you make. I believe that they are correct, and I have no doubt that your accomplishments will be great! This is also a special time for members of your family who have loved and guided you through this
Ferguson and Baltimore are less likely to happen in my city." A diverse group of local pastors and community leaders attended the invitationonly event at Northland, A Church Distributed, moderated by the church's senior pastor, Dr. Joel C. Hunter. Participating mayors included Casselberry Mayor, Charlene Glancy; Lake Mary Mayor, David Mealor; Longwood Mayor, Joe Durso; Sanford Mayor, Jeff Triplett; and Winter Springs Mayor, Charles Lacey. Each talked about what they are doing to ensure fair treatment of all citizens; to plan for a helpful response in the event of a riot; and to be examples of building relationships across racial/ethnic divisions over time. "This was an opportunity for them to reassure other community leaders that they are prepared for the safety and well-being of
phase of your life. I can imagine the great sense of pride they share in your accomplishments. I experienced the same sense of pride when my son and grandsons graduated from high school. I was excited about their futures and looked forward to the many milestones they had yet to experience. You must continue your search for academic and personal excellence. Be passionate about your beliefs and your work. Use sound judgment as you interact with others, and make certain that you contribute your special talents to improving our society.

all citizens," Dr. Hunter explains. "In a time where racial strife is threatening cities across the country, we want to make certain every effort is being made to build respect, safety and good relationships in each of our cities." Seminole County came into the national spotlight back in 2012, following the shooting death of unarmed Sanford teen, Trayvon Martin. Sanford has escaped the violence that has erupted in other cities, largely because of the work between the community, the police department and local pastors. Central Florida churches continue to advance the cause of racial reconciliation. Most recently, in January, several hundred members of black and white congregations gathered together to watch the movie "Selma." This led to the formation of an advisory council representing local churches, law enforcement, businesses and community leaders.
CONGRATULATIONS to the CLASS OF 2015 "Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society." Malcolm X PAGE 10

HALL: Why Can’t WE be Friends? Sometimes I don't speak right but yet I know what I'm talking about The color of your skin don't matter to me As long as we can live in harmony Why can't we be friends?
Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist.
Hit single on the Number 1 R&B Album 1975 - War
June is Black Music month and a stroll down memory lane is never out of order. Do you remember the band War? War was a big band and was inclusive racially, culturally and musically. They could go from a funky slow beat song like “Slipping into Darkness” right into the “the Cisco Kid.” And all the while the coolest White dude in the world was blowing that harmonica. I love that imagery because if we can't come together in music we can never come together at all. Music is the last crossroads. Music is the only mutual place where every part of humanity is on equal footing. And that’s of great import, because some of the things I hear Black people saying about my Brown brothers and sisters really make me nervous. Sometimes I hear us- the most hated and mistreated people on the planet today disparaging Mexicans or Hispanics or whatever you
PAGE 11
want to call them in a manner that makes me sick. Slavery was worse than anything humanly imaginable; most will agree. However, Blacks and Browns have much to agree and commiserate on when it comes to living in this country. Blacks and Browns can both say that we suffer because we have been exploited by the American labor market and consistently relegated to second class citizenship. I never attended school with a White student until the 10th grade. Because we were both colored, poor, redlined and locked out, among my best
friends were Mack Salazar and Hilaria Rodriguez in elementary. I became pals with former Dallas Mayor Wes Wise’s son as a teenager, but I grew up with and broke bread with Mexican friends much, much earlier. What really gets me riled is to hear African-Americans talk as though Mexicans have no place in our society. Somehow we have bought into this polarizing ignorance that Mexicans are stealing our jobs and are a detriment to our standard of living. That is a lie that should never be repeated or rehearsed, especially in the
I MESSENGER
presence of our children. The ability to make the oppressed oppress one another is a based on a lie from the pit of hell, also known in America as the “status quo.” We make jokes as if Mexicans are all first generation and don't understand the language. We speak as if they are some threat to the safety and solemnity of America’s future. But listen to a Pew Research Center statistic that even surprised even me. “A record 33.2 million Hispanics in the U.S. speak English proficiently, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. In 2013, this group made up 68% of all Hispanics ages 5 and older, up from 59% in 2000. At the same time that the share of Latinos who speak English proficiently is growing, the share that speaks Spanish at home has been declining over the last 13 years.” Yeah, just like you speak Ebonics at the crib!! Why can’t we be friends? You know why!! If Blacks, Browns and Whites who live at or near poverty ever got together, wealth and income redistribution would be a natural. I see the Mexican community with the same type of fire that Blacks had in the seventies when opportunities began to open up. My Brown brothers are going for the gold and I am down with them. The Cisco Kid was always a friend of mine.

Ask Alma… The One that Got Away Dear Alma: I’ve been married for over 10 years and I’m very happy with my husband and two kids. My husband is very kind to me. My kids are very well behaved and we have a good life. Before I got married I was in love with a man who said he would never get married and he didn’t want any kids. I always hoped that he didn’t mean that and would marry me but he never did. After more than a year and a half, we broke it off and I met my husband and got married. After I got married I would see him from time to time and he stayed in touch with my brother. When he and my brother would go out, he would always ask about me to see how I was doing. Recently my brother told me that he said he should have married me. I know you’re gonna think I’m crazy but I can’t stop thinking about him. I think we need to have a conversation because I have so much I want to say to him.
Ask Alma
Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Po s t . Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.
I am trying to figure out my best option. I could email him or reach out on Facebook. I was thinking I could ask him to meet me. How should I contact him in a way that’s the most respectful? Name withheld Excuse me, did you say respectful? What exactly is respectful about a married woman trying to reconnect with an ex? Because that’s basically all you’re trying to do. You wanna know how I know – cause I thought the same thing. And when I did, I asked my BFF Neasy about it. Yep, I wanted to contact my old “here he comes, I can’t breathe” high school crush named Poopie. Girl, it was a crush like no other, LOL. Like you, I was
happily married, life was good, and all I wanted to do is let him know just how much I truly loved him. I did my best explaining and exasperating my heart and soul to Neasy and you know what she asked me: Why? Yep, just that simple. So now I’m asking you. Why? What if he misunderstands YOUR actions? Is it worth your marriage, the love of your husband, the happiness of your children? If he wanted to marry you, he would have. Ain’t no truth in shoudda, cudda, wudda. Stop romanticizing over what you wish could have happen and live in what is happening. What is happening is that you have a loving husband and father to your children. If circumstances were the other way
around and your husband wanted to have a conversation with an ex, girl pleez, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. You’d be accusing him of all kinds of disrespect! Turn your twinkle toes towards what’s real and watch the video, live version of Whitney Houston, “All the Man I Need” and fall back in fabulous love with your husband. My favorite is the one with her in a beautiful red gown, Kirk Whalum’s on the sax. It’s the concert she did for our troops. Girl, rewind it two or three times if you need to. All the romance and attention you’re looking for is already living inside your home. You just need to breathe new life into it. Let that other man go, that conversation and action of sharing words, just isn’t worth the risk of losing your happy home. I never contacted Poopie and I’m perfectly fine with that decision. Give it some time and you will be, too. If not, go find a BFF you can confide in, who’ll keep you on TRACK named Neasy! Alma
WASHINGTON: Let it Go, Please Any act of this nature speaks for itself. It can’t get any simpler than this. Christ suggests that God can see into your heart and knows your intention. Let’s see now. Love God and love your neighbor as you would love yourself. Incredibly simple! So simple, you could miss it altogether.
Spiritual Speaking By James Washington
Today is truly a day that the Lord has made and it’s apparent to me that as the world gets more and more complicated, the Word of God gets easier to understand. I oftentimes get reminded of the power of ego (mine), pride and the desire to control or more correctly, be in control. Dare I say that most people believe, certainly understand the concept of letting go and letting God. But actually doing it, they find is impossible. I know many so called Christians, as you do, who can quote scripture, but even after all these years demonstrate very little faith, if any. I know Christian control freaks who must have the last say and who just have to be right all the time. I’ve gotten caught up in rationalizing my
PAGE 17
own actions given the circumstances of the day, as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority, only to recognize later that not only am I wrong, but God never entered the picture. I call it faithless behavior. It is at these times that I feel open to receiving the Holy Spirit and realize every day is full of miracles. I am blessed and highly favored and always have been. I am not in control. I never have been and if the truth be told, it’s okay. Giving one’s life to Christ requires a constant vigil against taking credit or assessing blame. When you focus on service in the name of the Lord, you really do get a chance to see all of this from a very different perspective. Service in this regard neither seeks nor expects reward.
Now on this day, any day that the Lord has made, let’s march this simple concept in what appears to be an ever increasingly complex world. Behavior should then have limits. Actions should have purpose and your intent should be upper most in your mind. So, let’s take a look at yesterday. You see how easy it is to get up and succumb to jealousy, pettiness, cruelty, envy and the like? It actually takes work to be humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day every day. It shouldn’t but it does. The world sees to that. It takes will power and you know the will I’m talking about. I believe the calling of every Christian is simply to try. It’s the effort that God expects. It’s the intent He wants. If you’re first seeking Him, then the question,
I MESSENGER
then how you perform, how you think, what you say and who you hang out with gets answered with a resounding amen! I’m fortunate enough to believe that I’ve known people who were angels walking. Thus, I believe there are saints among us and I don’t ever want to be so busy that I ignore them in my haste pursuing the world instead of the Word. However, from these living breathing angels, I’ve learned the battle is not necessarily over until you win. And don’t concern yourself about the victory because Christ did that some time ago. What’s that line in the movie? What we do today echoes in eternity. My eternity is set. All I have to do is get through this life thing. Therefore get up each and every day and get this before you leave your home. See me see God. You can do this one hour at a time, one day at a time, one person at a time. Let it go, please. May God bless and keep you always.

Communities across the country join in celebration of Men’s Health Month (WASHINGTON-- June is Men’s Health Month and communities across the country and around the globe are joining Men’s Health Network in celebrating this special awareness period. The goal of Men’s Health Month is to encourage men and boys to take care of their health and to heighten the public’s awareness of the many preventable health problems that affect them and their families. “These efforts reach men where they live, work, play, and pray,” said Ana Fadich, Vice President of Men’s Health Network, which organizes Men’s Heath Month events nationwide. “They’re a great way for healthcare providers, policy makers, the media, and individuals to educate men, their families, and the public on a wide range of men’s health issues, including cancers, hypogonadism, cardiovascular problems, sexual and mental health concerns.” During Men’s Health Month, health care professionals, private corporations, faith-based and fraternal organizations, government agencies, and other interested organization plan activities and events which focus on the health and well-being of men and boys.
“As a urologist, prostate specialist and Men’s Health Network advocate, I feel this is a critical time to encourage men and their families to focus on Men’s Health,” saidJudd W. Dearly Departed Joseph “Beau” Gladys Pearl Woolen Nash Biden Gladys Pearl Woolen Nash, 75, of Dallas TX, passed away May 29, 2015. Wake: Friday June 5, 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Service: Saturday June 6, 11:00 AM both at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, 3700 Simpson Stuart Rd Dallas TX 75241. She is survived by her children: Kenneth (Sharon), Gary, Anthony (Janell), Cassandra Ates (Steven), Patrick (Melanie), and Valencia Nash-McShann (Melvin); 7 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
In Memoriam
Statement on the Passing of Beau Biden from John Kerry Secretary of State Washington, DC
Teresa and I are heartbroken for Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill, and Joe, and particularly for Beau and Hallie’s two remarkable children, Hunter and Natalie. Beau’s loss is crushing for everyoneLUCKY enough to have known him and the whole Biden family, because you can’t know them without feeling their overwhelming love for each other – for family. For the Bidens, being there for each other was and is everything. Any real conversation with Joe was about family and how much he and Jill loved their children and grandchildren. Life for them is family. I’ll never forget what Joe Biden said to me about Beau while he was serving his country in Iraq. Beau had just turned down what some considered the opportunity of a lifetime, to be appointed to the Senate seat his Dad had held for almost 40 years. "Beau is just so good," Joe said. "He's so good." What an all-encompassing statement about how much Joe loved his eldest son and how much Beau loved his Dad. Beau Biden was a son any father might hope to raise, and Joe Biden is the kind of
father any boy would want. It made their relationship special. Beau also was special. I got to know him just listening to Joe talk in the Senate cloakroom about his boys. Then I was fortunate to spend time with Beau when he first ran for Attorney General in 2006. He went off to war two years later. He didn't have to go. He didn't have to do any of it. But he was filled with a sense of honor, duty, and humility – to the core. He was a class act, period, ingrained with integrity, compassion, a sense of moral obligation to help others, and especially people who were hurting. All that and more has long been ingrained in the Biden family, which has experienced pain before and come out stronger at the broken places, as Hemingway wrote so poignantly. As we know, there are some things only God can explain. The tragic loss of the good, the young and the brave has haunted me for a long, long time now – and again today, with Beau's passing. A few years ago, Joe, who, tragically, was already speaking from experience, described the period after losing a loved one as akin to "that black hole you feel in your chest, like you're being sucked back into it." But Joe has also said there comes a day "when the thought of your son or daughter, or your husband or wife, brings a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eyes." As usual, Joe said it better than anyone else could. And while I know it may not come soon, Teresa and I wish that same peace for the Biden family, and all those who love them. That's the solace we all rely on as we mourn Beau Biden and extend our profound shared sorrow to all the Biden family.
MEL WAITERS
Earline Elizabeth Gadson, we miss you so very much. There will never be another, Mother! September 10, 1934 June 10, 2014
PAGE 24
Southern Soul and Blues star Mel Waiters was born and raised in San Antonio, TX, where in 1974 he began his performing career at local teen clubs; after a stint as a radio DJ, he was awarded a government contract to entertain at military bases across the Southwest. With the exception of sax Waiters produced, played and wrote all the material for his first CD release in 1996. The slick “Hit It & Quit It” and “Whatever It Took” gave him his first Southern hits. He followed this up with his second for the Serious Sounds with “Suki Suki Man” that got his biggest song to date with the title track. Waiters was next snatched up by Malaco Records’s Waldoxy imprint in 1997 and an even bigger hit was produced by the single “Got My Whiskey” featuring a very polished dance sound he would continue with. Despite increasing popularity up to this point in 1999 he jumped to the top of the Soul/Blues heap with the smash “Hole In The Wall,” one of those undeniable hits that guarantee you’ll work in the Chitlin Circuit for years to come. The single, which also featured a remix by Bigg Robb, managed to hit Billboard’s Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart at #24 and also gave Waiters his first placing on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart (#5) and the Top R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #83. Since that time Waiters has scored with a string of similar sounding dance songs about drinking whiskey and partying at the “hole in the wall.” His most recent disc, “Throwback Days,” dented Billboard Top 100 R & B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #93 proving longevity for the artist. Waiters also ran his own label, Britney Records, for a time and his roster includes legend Lattimore. Waiters died on May 28, 2015

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
