Message to my people...

My New Year’s Present Cheryl Smith

Don’t Believe the Hype 5

I have just found out that services will be held for my Godson, Jeffrey D. Miller. It seems like only yesterday, although it wasn’t, that his older brother J.J. was the victim of violence, of that all-intrusive moniker, Black on Black crime. Now here he was, another black man dying a violent death. When I talked to Jeffrey earlier this month, we were planning for his visit to Dallas for this weekend’s 21st annual Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon. I was excited that he was coming and looking forward to sharing the experience with him. I used to make jokes about him when he was younger. You see, one December I came home from college and his mom wanted to go out to ring in the new year. I agreed to babysit J.J. When she came home she said she had a great time, and that is good because nine months later, Jeffrey was born.

Quit Playin 9

From the time he was born, I would always say that I didn’t want to go out on New Year’s Eve because that was the time you got pregnant! I took the credit for his birth!

Jeffrey Miller, enjoying a Dallas Mavs game with his Aunt Cheryl

Jeffrey was not only big in stature. He had a big heart and I loved him so much. When I moved my mother from New Jersey to Texas in 2012, he was the person who drove the truck nearly 1600 miles. And while he was here, we experienced his culinary talents as he took over my kitchen. Spiritually Speaking 11

During a visit to New Jersey in 2012, I spent the entire day with Jeffrey and his friends. We went shopping and ate really good pizza (not throwing any shade on Chicago, but let’s be serious!). Although it was snowing and icy, Jeffrey wanted me to meet his “second family,” a cadre of men and women who clearly loved him and valued their relationships. They all seemed happy to finally meet “Aunt Cheryl” and the feeling was mutual because I definitely wanted to know that this kind, generous, loving, hunk of a man was surrounded around people who appreciated him and reciprocated his love.

There were about nine of us and we spent the evening at a restaurant enjoying very good food, entertainment and drinks. They even explained the art of “holding your liquor” as we talked about everything under the sun. Everyone was respectful, there was a lot of laughing and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I even had my first Tequila shot! Jeffrey and I had long talks about everything from building a future and the importance of family to enjoying life and making a difference while we are here. I don’t know why the men shot him and knowing won’t ease the pain felt from the loss. I have to take solace in the memories I have of our special relationship.

GOVERNOR SIGNS HAIR BRAIDING DEREGULATION BILL AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 2717 into law today deregulating hair braiding for the Texas barbering and cosmetology professions. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Executive Director, William Kuntz, states, “We consistently review programs and licenses under our management to determine if continued licensure is needed. In alignment with Governor Abbott’s vision of limited government and less regulation the agency identified hair braiding as one of its strategic initiatives to downsize government for 2015. This an example of the Department’s focus on Smaller, Smarter Government.” Individuals and instructors who only provide or teach hair braiding and specialty shops that solely provide hair braiding services are no longer required to hold a license. HALL: Feelin’ It! “I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord

Quit Playin’

And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord” – Phil Collins

This is the epilogue of Black Music Month circa 2015. Strangely enough I found that one of former boxing champ, Mike Tyson’s favorite tunes is a song by Phil Collins, who's really a brother incognito. “I can feel it in the air tonight” worked perfect

for the mood that I'm in now. As a writer, there are days when you have brain freeze or writer’s block; and then there are days when you are inundated with things to talk and or write about. This week has rendered the rash and residue of the latter. So where do I start? Well, now right at the top I wanted to talk about the South Carolina Confederate flag, but

always said; “Being the whole ass is no better than being the hole of the same.” Finally, and as if I didn’t have ample material, the long leaked announcement that Dwaine Caraway was running to unseat the County Commissioner John Wiley Price hit the airwaves. All I could think was,

that’s just about to become history. They can’t afford a blow to their tourism treasure. Dylan Roof is just another wannabee supremacist who wants to be known by any means necessary. Nothing left to say there. Then the breaking news pall was that President Obama used the word “Nigger.” Most of America feigned astonishment; I was actually quite excited because of the context in which he used it. If you didn't get it, what Obama said was that being called a Nigger is nothing in comparison to the treatment that America affords us. In other words what you call us

shouldn’t mean much. The realworld travesty is that for the most part, African-Americans live a Third World experience in a first world nation. It’s kind of like living in subsidized government housing in a suave section of Highland Park. Most of our mothers taught us enough to insulate us against cruel mouthings and crude mannerisms. What is difficult for us is to watch America regard us as though we

Dwaine Caraway

wouldn't it be easier to get a legitimate job than to assume the head whore position with the Dallas Citizen’s Council? Is this the same Duane R. Caraway whose claim to fame is a million-dollar fried chicken shack, a famous failure to get young boys to pull up their pants, and a nickel bag that won't get you high and doesn't constitute a misdemeanor? D Wayne is no runof-the-mill idiot; he is exceptional at what he’s paid to do. #NegroQuitPlayin’

don't belong. On the local front, I was delighted that DISD “Mischief” Michael Floyd Miles has decided to resign. I hope Miles stands as a living testimony that talking a good game and mistreating people is not a form of management. Tough talk and well-timed terminations don’t create success or significant change. As my dad

All in all it has been a fantastic week to be a journalist. It’s a trifecta if you are an opinion writer. In the words of the great and one of my favorite writers, Robert Frost, “This one thing has made all the difference.” Sadly, the more evil, sinister, and unpredictable America gets, the better she seems to get. We are good at loving each other during times of mass tragedy. America always seems to take two steps backwards and one step forward. Unless of course, the steppers are black and then it’s multiplied. The “Little Rock Nine,” “The South Carolina Nine or the Temptations on “Cloud Nine.” It’s been a rough week, but a change is bound to come and I can feel it in the air tonight.

Ask Alma...Apart while being together Dear Alma, My husband and I have been married for over 25 years. We’re both in our late 50s. On the outside looking in, we’re a church going happy couple, but the reality is, we’re not. No, we don’t argue or disrespect each other, but we just don’t talk much. He falls asleep in the basement most nights and I’m sleeping alone. We don’t go out on romantic dates and he never wants to try anything new. We just exist almost like roommates. And I’m sure he would be fine with this for the rest of his life. I love my husband very much and I don’t want my marriage to end. I have been seeing an old boyfriend lately who has moved back to our town. He and I have not missed a beat. We’re like two teenagers sneaking around and, needless to say, everything is hot and heavy. I know

I should cut it off before my husband finds out, but I enjoy the attention. I talked to my husband the other night and told him how unhappy I was and he said he’ll do better. He hasn’t returned to our bedroom, so I’m not sure what’s going on. I just don’t know what to do. I am not ready to let go of the way things are with the return of the “love of my life.” Do you think I should give my husband an ultimatum? — Name withheld An ultimatum to do what, not catch you at your foolishness? You’re married. Your love and

devotion is reserved for your husband, only. In the good, bad, fast and slow times. This sounds like a slow season. Your husband clearly is a guy who deserves the opportunity to make it better. He isn’t abusing you, he seems to be in a comfort zone. You have invested 25 years in a person who should be respected as the LOYL. Don’t get it twisted. Girlfriend, you’re as wrong as a Wendy Williams weave and you know it. Adultery is never the acceptable behavior. Just because you’ve added lip gloss and eye liner doesn’t beautify it. You’re wrong!

Ok, so your husband isn’t romantic, won’t come to bed and he isn’t hitting it like he use too. And? What can you do about it? Have you offered him a reason to come to bed? Start focusing and planning a red hot reunion with all the dedication and planning you exercised to plan your wedding, and watch happens. Break if off with the other lover. No contact whatsoever, no phone calls, emails, text messages, Facebook contact, twitter post, snail mail, nothing. Find your way back to reality. Back to honoring your husband. Girl, get your stuff together. What you’re doing is ratchet, cut it out. It’s one thing to lie to yourself when you don’t know any better, but you do. You have pulled in the wrong driveway Lady Love, cause you gets no sympathy here. — Alma

WASHINGTON: It really ain’t about you Spiritually Speaking By James Washington Sometimes my human arrogance allows me to think that I can work out the answers to life’s simplest problems without any help, only to confuse the situation and myself worse. More, importantly there are still times when I’m sure I’m looking for all of the right things in all the right places only to realize I’m wrong on both counts i. e., wrong thing wrong place. I tend to act without consciously understanding that God has worked all of this out. He doesn’t need any input from me. I mean there was a time when I thought there must be something I’m not getting because the more I searched for the meaning of my own salvation, the more lost I became. You see I now know it’s really easy to fool yourself when you’re arrogant

PAGE 11

enough to think you have all the answers, or you’re capable of getting out of any situation using your own devices. Because of an enlightening Sunday service, I can tell you unequivocally that I am not the primary source of knowing why things unfold the way they do. And neither are you. Spiritually speaking, my mistake had been to think that somehow I would one day, through my own volition, discover the best way to serve God. My “calling,” my life’s work would become clear because after all, I was actively searching to get to what I was supposed to be doing with the gifts the Lord had given me. Wrong! That’s not letting go and letting God. That’s holding on and giving yourself way too much credit.

The message during service was so simple that I can honestly say it was God’s way of giving me insight into His destiny for me via a sermon about independence. I clearly understand that I cannot accomplish anything without acknowledging Christ first. I really do realize I don’t function well outside of the boundaries of faith and a belief in Jesus’ intercession on my behalf. For me that means getting as close as I can to wallowing in the Word of God via prayer, bible study, meditation or what ever you want to call it. I exist because He exists. In this regard, my calling, my vocation is to receive, listen, accept and obey. Scripture says lean not on my own understanding but seek God always. If I do that I’ll find what I need to know. So wherever I am, He is. Personally, I am now convicted that my job is to accept what is shown to me. I cannot speak for you but for me I need quiet time in the Word. My prayers have become requests for the Lord to allow me to fulfill His destiny for me, whatever that might be.

I MESSENGER

I’m convinced that He has so much more for me than I could ever imagine. I believe it’s Deuteronomy that says when all else fails, return to God and obey Him. He will be merciful. Now I know finding God in the context of man’s understanding can seem impossible at times. Listening to Him is tough at times because the world is constantly after your attention. But the simple truth is God so loves me that He sent His son so that I might live eternally. There is really not much more to it than that. My job then becomes clear. Seek Him out and don’t worry about the rest. Let go and let God. This column may seem a little more self serving than usual, but I’m declaring what works for me, deliberate and regular reaching out. That act alone guides my thoughts and in many ways determines my behavior. As long as you realize you can’t figure it out, then you don’t have to try to anymore. May God bless and keep you always.

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street,” said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

A

Grade: A Page 4

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.”

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.” (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no” and voting “yes” mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
