Message to the People...
Sometimes less is better Cheryl Smith
Supt. Mike Miles 11
Rene Syler 18
I could go on and on about the Ebola epidemic. No matter where I go, someone is talking about the disease and even my little five-year-old princess said “enough already” about the extensive coverage on television. She even covered her eyes as the anchor began yet another update on Nina Pham and Amber Vinson; two nurses currently being treated for the virus or the death of Thomas Eric Duncan. I’ve felt sick to my stomach as I listened to all the hate-filled conversations and misinformation. My message is simple:

Floyd Ain’t Funny Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent Hall is an award-winning columnist and author.
Joel Osteen, the pastor of the largest mega church in America; maybe even the world always begins every sermon the same way. "I like to start off with something funny." And as a columnist I do too, but there is nothing funny at all about Floyd “Mike” Miles. And so without any fanfare or opening punch line, this column is designed to say he got to go!!! His disrespectful and arrogant removal of Dallas Independent school District board trustee Bernadette Nutall as she tried to attend a meeting in her own district, has to be the last straw. Even the crested protection of Mayor Mike Rawlings should not provide him shade or protection from the taxpayers and parents of this district. Dallas gasped and many were speechless if not stunned, when the story appeared early Monday morning in the Dallas Morning News. “A struggling South Dallas middle school started Monday with its fourth principal in two years after Superintendent Mike Miles replaced the leadership team and 10 teachers. But before the school day even began, there was more upheaval. Trustee Bernadette Nutall said she was thrown out of Dade Middle School by three Dallas ISD police officers after Miles accused her of trespassing. Nutall said she wanted to encourage teachers who were concerned about the sudden changes. But Miles, who was there to lead a 6:30 a.m. staff PAGE 11
!
meeting, didn’t want her in the building, she said. “I have never ever experienced anything like this
in tow, physically off the ground. I couldn’t even believe it,” Wallace said. She said she was so disturbed about the way Nutall was “manhandled” that she wants to file a complaint about the incident. Other school board members have attended staff meetings at schools going through similar changes. A few weeks ago, trustee Nancy Bingham left a school board meeting to attend a staff meeting at Seagoville High School after the principal abruptly resigned. The administration also invites some board members to attend staff meetings at the district headquarters and schools.” The last time Miles was run out of town on a rail, the ouster
was orchestrated by the protests of students in the Sierra High School students in Colorado Springs Colorado. Student Body President Troy Fowler said of the September 2011 incident to the press; “We’re freaking out, stressed out about everything because the teachers are stressed, and it’s hard for us to sit here and try to make it through high school when all the teachers want to quit” Hopefully, city and county leaders, parents or even the teachers will lead the next ouster of Floyd “Mike” Miles. But as Pastor Joel Osteen can attest, the bible says; “And a child shall lead them.” At this point most of the parents and 70% of DISD employees don’t care who gets the credit, just get rid of him!!

in my life. I cannot believe he did it,” said Nutall, an elected school board member who represents District 9, which includes Dade. “This is a clear example of the consistent bullying tactics that we continue to hear about Miles exhibiting to staff.” DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said in an email that the meeting at Dade was between the administration and school staff. He didn’t address questions about Nutall being kicked out. Nutall said she met late Monday with Miles, trustee Lew Blackburn and board President Miguel Solis. She declined to give details of the meeting. Juanita Wallace, president of the Dallas NAACP, said she witnessed Nutall being ousted. She said she arrived about 6:30 a.m. to attend the staff meeting after she was invited by some Dade employees. “As I get to the door, the door swings open towards me, and they’ve got her !

Refresh with Paul By James A. Washington I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork. Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding. Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history. Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. A very large part of the bible is devoted to Paul’s building of the early church at a time when who you worshipped was a life and death decision. Paul himself says in his letters to the church in Corinth, there was indeed a point to his suffering and persecution and the basis for most, if not all, of what he went through was a by product of his faith in Jesus Christ. It’s another
Spiritually Speaking perspective of one of my favorite scriptures. “But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I (Paul) will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. This kind of thinking and belief led to the eventual proliferation of the church worldwide. It also makes the point of how the lives of so few have impacted and influenced so many in the world then, and also in the world as we know it today. Forgive me if I find this a rather fascinating fact. Paul is who he is because of his unique one on one
encounter with Christ. That encounter changed him and ultimately the world in which we live. If that be true, then our individual encounters with Christ should also have a profound effect on us and the world in which we currently live. It is not unusual for new Christians to come under attack by old friends. It is also not unusual for new Christians to come under the attack of the world, since it is in the world that Satan has some degree of power. I think Paul’s good news is there is a place of refuge for all of us, when this happens. He uses himself as an example to follow. If I surrender my weaknesses to the power of Christ and subjugate my will to that of the Lord’s, then I become empowered to deal with whatever is thrown my way. Life, the Christian life, is funny that way. It places what I have
described as a bulls- eye on your back, designed to distinguish you from those non believers around you. It, your faith, also sets you up and apart to do great things in the name of Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior. I guess what I’m really saying is when the going gets extremely tough, check the human being Paul. Like Christ, he’s been through and has experienced the worst that life has to offer. But because of his belief system, he’s experienced the best of God’s promises. It’s like a refresher course and I just wanted to let you know where I go during difficult times. You might also find some answers there. The point I’m trying to make is that in the eyes of God, one’s weaknesses are welcomed opportunities for God to show up and show out. Have you ever wondered why those who have been through so much are able to stand and witness mightily for Christ? Reexamine the reality of God’s grace and you just might get your answer. May God bless and keep you always.

Syler to speak at Nappiology Expo The 2014 Nappiology Expo is focusing on natural options for not only hair, but also the mind and body. Rene Syler, host of Sweet Retreats, is the guest speaker for the expo "A Healthy Mind, Body and Hair Event." The expo will be held Sunday, November 2, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Grapevine Convention Center at 1209 South Main Street, Grapevine, Texas. "For the past six years we have been providing men, women, and children educational information about natural hair care and beauty," said Nappiology founder De Johnson. "This year we are including healthy aspects to enhance their mind, body and hair." Dozens of natural hair-care lines have flooded the hair industry as natural hair styles have become popular again. According to the market research firm Mintel, the relaxer product that chemically straightens tightly curled hair has dropped in sales more than 26 percent since 2008. Mintel estimates the black hair-care market is a $500 billion-dollar industry. "It's important for women to understand the ingredients in hair-care products and what they do to their hair," said ThinkandGrowChick.com natural-hair blogger Courtney Sanders. As a college student studying chemical engineering, Sanders developed a hair-care product line. Sanders' workshop will help women figure out ways to find the best products for their hair. Rene Syler, host of the national show Sweet Retreats, will be doing a workshop on "A Journey of Self-Discovery. "Well, a few years ago, tragedy struck. After a brief illness that landed me in the hospital, I went back to chemically straightening my hair. What happened? My hair got dry, broke off and fell out! It was a mess! That's when I decided ENOUGH!" explained Rene Syler. As the founder of Good Enough Mother, Syler is a sought-after expert on lifestyle and parenting issues for national talk shows including Today and CNN Headline News. Dr. Michele Darden-Jefferson will host a workshop on the best foods to maintain a healthy body, skin, hair and nails. Ramona Logan, Image Advantage PR consultant, will tell her individual journey of finally becoming free of hair hassles once she went natural three-years ago after taking on the Nappiology Expo as a client. "Natural hair has allowed more women the freedom of exercising without having to worry about the impact on their hair," said De Johnson. "So we are offering workshop sessions with exercise and sports experts, such as LPGA golf-teaching pro Maulana Dotch, yoga instructor Bruce Boyd, and running enthusiast and Dallas ambassador for Black Girls RUN! Scymentress Williams, to show that physical fitness is an essential component of having healthy natural hair as well as a healthy lifestyle." Expo exhibitors include NuDred, JHC Salon, CutiCouture, Naturalsis72, Honeylocs Natural Hair Care by Erika, It Works, Miss Jessie's, Obia Natural Hair Care, and Urban Rose. Drumline: A New Beat to premiere Oct 27 on VH1 VH1ʹ′s original film Drumline: A New Beat. A sequel to 2002ʹ′s Drumline, the new flick will reunite stars of the original, Nick Cannon and Leonard Roberts with new blood like Single Ladies‘ LeToya Luckett. VH1’s upcoming original movie “Drumline: A New Beat,” produced in partnership with Fox Television Studios, and executive produced by the original film producers Wendy Finerman, Dallas Austin and Jody Gerson, along with Nick Cannon, will premiere Monday, October 27th at 9PM ET/PT. “Drumline: A New Beat” will capture the sound and spirit of the first film while welcoming a whole new class to the Atlanta A&T drumline. The new story follows female lead Danielle “Dani” Raymond (Alexandra Shipp), an upper class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend Atlanta A&T so she can join – and revitalize – their onceprominent drumline. Dani’s quest to become the first female section leader will be hampered by upperclassmen, including her cousin Tyree (Jeff Pierre), her feelings for fellow bandmate and rival Jayven (Jordan Calloway), and the PAGE 19

school’s crosstown competitors. Tasha (Jasmine Burke) and Josh (Scott Shilstone) round out the freshmen drumline and bring their own ambitions onto the field. Sean Taylor (Leonard Roberts) from the original film will return to the franchise as Atlanta A&T’s new band director. Sean is looking to make his mark on his alma mater while dealing with “ghosts” from his past: the dean, Dr. Nia Phillips (LeToya Luckett), his brother, Kevin Taylor (Deray Davis) and original “Drumline” favorite, Devon Miles (Nick Cannon). “Drumline: A New Beat” is the next movie fueling VH1’s successful momentum into the scripted arena. Dating a Serial Cheater Dear Alma, A male friend of mine moved to my city for a 6-month work assignment. To welcome him to the area, I took him to dinner and introduced him to my local friends. Well, I just learned that he has been having a sexual relationship with a sorority sister, who’s also my best friend. I am uncomfortable with this situation because my male friend has a live-in girlfriend who has been with him for over eight years. I feel like I need to say something, especially now that his assignment may be extended and his live-in girlfriend is planning a visit. My girlfriend says she knows it’s temporary and that she plans to break up with him before his significant other arrives. She also confided to me that he told her that he loves her but

Ask Alma cannot leave his live-in and doesn’t know what to do. She is not a dumb girl. She’s an attorney, and she’s got it going on. Do you think it‘s really love? Should I get involved or mind my business? Vicky Dear Vicky, If this were my BFF, I would say something like this: “What the hell…Really!! What are you thinking!” LMBO Naaw; just kidding. Don’t do that. I’m a firm believer in what my Mama use to say: “You catch more

flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” You want to get her attention, so confront her in a manner that she can embrace. I can sense the pride and admiration you have for your friend when you talk of her accomplishments. Granted, one’s occupation doesn’t exempt them from making unwise decisions. Anyway, your attorney-girlfriend is rationalizing her actions by thinking she’s really not being a skank because technically he’s not married. And since technically he’s not married, she can follow this yellow brick road and see where it leads.

Step up to the bench, my sistah, so you can hear me when I say this ain’t Kansas and, no, Sweetie, he’s not in love with you. He’s in really, really like, and I don’t blame him. He’s found a really smart woman to spend quality time with while he’s away from home. He offered you his live-in truth and you accepted it. Explain to your friend that recognizing her true treasures within allows her to be prepared when a mature man comes along. A mature man will offer her the proper love, commitment and devotion she deserves. It’s time to cut it off. Don’t wait for his main squeeze to visit; do it now. Remind her: Don’t settle for a second-hand man. Reach out, give her a fist bump and say: “Stop stumbling in the dark with Mr. Wrong, girl, when you could be dancing in the light with Mr. Right!” Alma

Do You Need ID Theft Insurance or Credit Monitoring? By Jason Alderman You'd have to be living under a rock not to be concerned about identity theft. It seems like every other month there's a new report about another massive data breach somewhere in the world. Not surprisingly, a thriving industry has sprung up around helping to protect consumers from identity theft. Most of these services are pretty expensive and many consumer organizations argue that they merely take actions you could easily carry out yourself for free. But if you don't have the time or wherewithal, you may want to enlist a professional to help unravel the mess. Following are some of the identity theft prevention services being marketed, as well as questions to ask when considering them: ID theft insurance is commonly offered as a rider to homeowners or renters insurance and typically costs $25 and $60 a year. Note: it doesn't protect you from being victimized in the first place nor does it cover direct monetary losses resulting from identity theft. Rather, it reimburses costs associated with reclaiming your financial identity (e.g., phone calls, making copies, mailing documents, wages lost when pursuing resolution and hiring an attorney). Questions you should ask: What are the policy's limits? Is there a deductible?
If lost wages are covered, what limits apply and what triggers this coverage? If legal fees are covered, what limits apply and must the insurer preapprove the work? How much personalized assistance will you get – will they assign a case manager to execute on your behalf or merely give you a checklist to follow? Credit monitoring services track your credit reports and contact you whenever key changes occur – things like new accounts opened in your name, address changes, credit inquiries and increased credit limits. They usually cost from $10 to $30 a month and services provided are all over the map. For example: Some monitor and provide credit reports from all three major credit bureaus; but some only track one. More expensive plans provide additional services including monitoring public records, black market website surveillance, and computer protection programs like antivirus and keystroke encryption software. Some provide one or more free (or low-cost) credit scores. Keep in mind when considering whether to buy credit monitoring: Many creditors report information to all three credit bureaus, but some only report to one, so your three credit reports may contain different information.
Because many lenders only report activity to credit bureaus monthly, it could take weeks before your monitoring service spots fraudulent behavior. Ask how you'll be notified of flagged changes (email, text and/or mail) and how frequently (daily, weekly, monthly). You can order one free copy of each credit report from www.annualcreditreport.comper year, so by staggering them, you could get a different report every four months. If you know – or fear – that an account has been compromised but don't want to fully block access to your credit reports through a credit freeze, you can place a free, 90-day initial fraud alert with the three credit bureaus. This means businesses must verify your identity with you before opening new accounts. You can renew the alert after 90 days. If you don't want to be bothered remembering, some monitoring services will file your renewals for a fee. For more tips, see the Federal Trade Commission's "Privacy and Identity" page atwww.consumer.ftc.gov/ topics/privacy-identity. Bottom line: Do you want to monitor your own credit (which is free but time-consuming) or hand off the task to a third party and pay hundreds of dollars? Either way, make sure it gets done. The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas
By Patrice J. Holmes
editorial@dallasweekly.com
Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity
Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days
Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
