HALL - God Loves Maya! Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall
Because I am neither willing nor inclined to borrow or pilfer from all of the grand words about Maya Angelou, I had to write this from my heart.

nor survive the trials that Maya has seen. How could you go on after losing a friend like the legendary Martin Luther King? Martin asked Maya to start a movement for monetary support for the “Poor People's campaign. Maya agreed but
To me, Maya was the Mother Theresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Mary McLeod Bethune of our time. Much like Mother Teresa, Maya will live eternally as that modest woman whose vibrancy and veracity for love can never be denied. Much like Mahatma Gandhi, Maya Angelou was an ambassador of international unity. Her words and her will spilled over into every continent. Like Gandhi, she lived with the mission to emancipate the world. She knew why the “Caged Bird Sang” and she knew every verse and meter of the song. Much like Malcolm X, Maya Angelou was deeply profound and fiery in her speech. Maya preached of love, forgiveness, and brotherhood which are where Malcolm was headed. All of this Maya planned to bring about by “any means necessary.” Much like Mary McLeod Bethune, Maya Angelou was a woman who promoted education. Ms. Bethune was appointed as a national PAGE 4

Theologians and biblical scholars have amassed a mountain of reasons why the number 40 is significant. The rains of Noah fell for 40 days and nights. Moses shared a mountain with God for 40 days and nights. 40 lashings was the maximum whipping penalty. King David reigned over Israel for 40 years. Women are pregnant for 40 weeks which is a time of testing. Jesus was tempted for 40 days and remained on earth 40 days after the resurrection. But the numbers still didn’t add up. I wrestled until my brain matter felt as if it had rotted, and then I saw a clip of my Angelou speaking to Oprah Winfrey.
Maya Angelou was an educator who held class where ever she sat, stood, or steadied herself. Even her casual conversation was cause to convene. Maya too had sway with the presidents of her time. convene. Maya too had sway with the presidents of her time. Maya Angelou made her migration to that “Great cloud of witnesses” that comes so close to the loss of Mandela and is so significant that no words are satisfying or sufficient. Maya Angelou had many chances to quit but turned them into opportunities to surge forward. Not many of us could imagine
asked that it be again after her birthday. On the night that Maya was preparing a “Grand party” she was left with her greatest predicament. Maya's friend and leader in the struggle had been assassinated by the hatred she knew far too well. Can you imagine how the significance of your own 40th birthday could be quelled and quieted by the death of your brother who had just made 39? !
She spoke about life, the creator of the cosmos and the humility it brought her to know that the same God who thought enough to decorate the planet had a prominent place in his heart for her. And because Maya was so taken by the three words "God loves me", her testimony reassured me that God loves me too. And oh yeah, God loves you too without regard to race, religion, gender or gender identity. You may not be posited in poetry or prose; you may not really understand the struggle of the underclass; you may not know how you can overcome all that life is giving you. But Maya Angelou's mission was to make you know that God loves you. And she did it. Vincent Hall is an award-winning writer and author. !

New NAACP president says protest in his DNA By George E. Curry WASHINGTON (NNPA) – When Rev. Frederick D. Haynes III of Dallas, Texas learned that the NAACP Board of Directors had chosen Cornell William Brooks over him, Attorney Barbara R. Arnwine and several other better known candidates to succeed outgoing president Benjamin Todd Jealous, his response was “Who?” And he wasn’t the only one responding that way. In an interview from Florida, where trustees had just made their selection, a board member who asked not to be identified by name said, “We turned the whole nation into a collection of owls,” he said. “When they learned of our decision, everyone in the country was saying, “Who? Who? Who?” Though he is not among the Who’s Who of national civil rights advocates, Brooks feels his entire life has prepared him to become president and CEO of the NAACP. He graduated from Jackson State University in Mississippi with honors, earned a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in systematic theology from Boston University School of Theology– where Dr. Martin Luther King earned his Ph.D. in the same area of study – and graduated from Yale Law School, serving as a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal and a member of the Yale Law and Policy Review. After serving as a law clerk for Judge Sam J. Irvin III on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, Brooks’ first job was as an attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law headed by Barbara Arnwine. He later worked as an attorney for the Justice Department, a senior attorney for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and was executive director of the Fair Housing Council of Greater Washington, D.C. His most recent job was as president of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, a Newark-based organization founded in 1999 by the Alan V. and Amy Lowenstein Foundation. According to its website, the institute seeks to expand economic opportunity for people of color and low-come residents; promotes holding local, state and regional government accountable for fulfilling the needs of urban residents and protects the civil rights of the disadvantaged.

“When you look at $221,203, plus $23,885 in the arc of my career, it has benefits and deferred not been singular or linear compensation and $2,400 in focus, but really in other allowances for a touched on many of the total of $247,488. challenges facing the In addition, four other country – whether it be in staffers – his senior business, the criminal counsel, chief operating justice system, the officer, chief of staff/CFO juvenile justice system, and director of the housing market – so I development – each think I bring a multiearned more than Rev. Cornell William Brooks dimensional, multi$100,000. Beyond the disciplined, multi-faceted focus on fiscal challenge, the expectation that work,” Brooks said. “That does not Brooks can grow membership by 20 make me unique, but perhaps percent a year is considered a lofty distinctive.” goal for an organization that has long Brooks will need that and more to be successful as the 18th president of the NAACP. The 5-page job description developed by The Hollins Group, the NAACP-contracted search firm based in Chicago, noted among the specific job responsibilities: “Work closely with the Chairman and the Board and be responsible for developing the organization’s U.S. private sector fundraising plan and growing its annual income and membership by 20%. This also will include expanding both staff and operations with an emphasis on building a larger base of private sector support and establishing an endowment.” According to the job description marked “confidential,” the Baltimore-based NAACP has a staff of 100 and an annual budget of $42 million. However, the organization is deeply in debt and recently cut its staff by 7 percent. Brooks has never managed a staff that large. The New Jersey Institute for Social Justice had a total of 19 staff members and a budget of $2.08 million. Its primary income was equally divided between government grants and investments, each bringing in approximately $350,000 annually. According to its IRS Form 990, it had a loss of $421,939 in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2012. Even though it was losing money, Brooks collected base compensation of $227,526, plus $10,437 in retirement and deferred compensation and $3,137 in nontaxable benefits for a total of $241,100, according to the IRS filing. The previous fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, 2011, the institute had a loss of $1,039,154.
fudged its membership numbers. Former NAACP executive directors Roy Wilkins and Benjamin L. Hooks routinely claimed a membership of 500,000. However, the Baltimore Sun did research and found that the NAACP had been claiming a membership of 500,000 since 1946. In 2006, then-president Bruce Gordon finally admitted that the figure was less than 300,000, where it still remains today. Brooks seemed confident that he can attract young people to the nation’s oldest – in longevity and by average age of members – civil rights organization. “It’s been my model, if you will, to engage young people, not by deputizing and delegating to them, but charging them with being co-creators of public policy,” he said. “In work I’ve done thus far, we were not engaged in bringing young people to the kiddie table. We bring them to the conference table as co-creators of reform and it works. It’s easy to get people excited about the work when they’re doing the work. They are not, in effect, junior anything in the movement.” At 53, Brooks, who grew up in Georgetown, S.C., feels he is uniquely positioned to serve as a magnet for young people. “I represent not just the younger end of the Baby Boomer generation, but the older end of the hip-hop generation,” he explained. “In other words, I came of age musically with R&B yet with hip-hop because it was born when I was in college.”
When pressed to share his vision for the NAACP, Brooks repeatedly declined, saying that’s something he will present when he addresses the NAACP membership at its July convention in Las Vegas. However, he said clues can be found in his past activities. He has worked on numerous issues including small businesses, civil rights litigation, assisting ex-offenders by getting companies to not ask about past incarceration on employment applications, Black colleges, churches, education, housing, criminal justice issues, training women for nontraditional jobs, and politics. Brooks, who still maintains a house in Virginia, ran for Congress in 1998 as the Democratic nominee for the 10th District in Virginia, but was soundly defeated in the general election by Republican Frank Wolf. He was a member of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s 2010 transition team, but is quick to add that he was appointed to various local and state posts, including the board of the New Jersey Public Broadcasting Authority, by Democrats as well. “My grandfather, Rev. James Prioleau, in the 40s ran for Congress in the 6th Congressional District of South Carolina,” said Brooks, a fourthgeneration ordained minister and an associate pastor at Turner Memorial AME Church in Hyattsville, Md. “He ran for Congress not because he thought he could win, but rather because he wanted to register African Americans to vote and enlist in and engage in the membership of the NAACP. That legacy is part of my moral DNA.” With the upcoming mid-term elections and the passing of voting laws that adversely impact Blacks, some critics worry that Brooks will not be able to hit the ground running when he assumes office in July. However, he strongly disagrees. “I think I am well prepared to do the work,” he said confidently. “I am as confident in my colleagues as I am my own abilities. I don’t think I’ll have any problem hitting the ground running simply because there are a lot of folks running with me.” -
Despite the milliondollar loss, Brooks’ salary was listed AT !

An Expensive Invitation Dear V.B.
Ask Alma Dear Alma, Three years after my divorce I met a really nice man. I am 34 years old, financially secure with no children. So far we make each other happy and get along really well. We both pay for things when we go out. I own my stuff, condo and car, and so does he. When we go out, never dutch, one or the other picks up the tab and it’s never been a problem. Here is my issue: He invited me to go with him to meet his family. Then he said the other night, “When are you going to get your ticket? Let me know so I can make sure we’re on the same flight. I was appalled that he wants me to pay my own way. I think that’s totally wrong. What do you think? V.B., Shreveport, La.
Since you guys share the cost most of the time anyway, and since it bothers you, make this a teachable moment in your new relationship and explain it to him. Let him know that visiting his family is like buying a special gift. And you’d rather not have to go in the store and get it yourself. Ask him to cover the cost of the flights and you volunteer to cover the hotel. If you’re staying with family, you can cover food and entertainment expenses. Don’t be mad; if things work out between you two, you’ll be glad he’s frugal, especially during your retirement years. In this economy, a man that resists unnecessary spending and prefers to save his coins is a keeper. Alma
What? He wants you to pay your way. Girl, can you hear that chirping chickadee, “cheap-cheapcheap-cheap!! LOL!! All I can say is, you’ve got an extremely fugal brother on your hands. To the left, to the left, I hear you and I totally agree. On the other hand, my sane mind, to the right, to the right, is tugging at me saying, “If he has a serious savings account and meticulously maintains his finances, that might be a good thing for you. I mean, really; he’s not asking you to go in half on his root canal. It’s a trip. Maybe he sees it as a vacation (you know how men are). Which I’m sure you do not (you know how women can be). Seriously, tho, going to visit your companion’s family is not a vacation, and you need to clarify. Unless you decide to have a straight-up conversation with him, I’d say give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think there’s any intent of wrongdoing here.

Talk is cheap, Act Now In bible study I once took a class called, “Taking the Word into the World.” The premise was that those of a Christian belief system should be doing something, acting in some way that distinguishes them in how they are looked upon on this human plane of existence. For me, at the time, it was somewhat confusing because how many of us really know and understand where we fit in God’s kingdom? One of my more anointed friends constantly reminds me that God’s plan for you and me is not very complicated at all. We make it more complex than it needs to be and the devil revels in our self imposed intellectual morass. How often have you questioned your purpose, your mission, you ministry or your duty to the Lord? I know, more often than not, I wind up doing nothing in the name of God because I have confused myself by questioning what I should be doing. Now the devil loves this stuff. The mere questioning keeps me from doing anything and I’m the one asking
the questions. Word of God The answer is as the Will of clearly stated God, can we in Ephesians understand 2:10. “For we how to react are God’s to this crazy by James A. Washington workmanship, world in created in which we live. Christ Jesus to do good works, Show your love for God, your which God prepared in advance for neighbor and yourself. “Be very us to do.” Simple question. Maybe it’s just me but I believe Therefore do not be foolish, but we can all tell the difference understand what the Lord’s will is.” between good works and bad Ephesians 5: 15-17. My mission as a works. It is not a confusing Christian is to do good works. My concept i.e. not complicated. I mission as a man of God is to do have no business procrastinating good works. Wow, this is becoming about doing good works. As a easier and easier. God is not a God matter of fact, scripture reminds of confusion. And if I just stay out me that this work is indeed of my own mind, I’ll be just fine. prepared for us to do in advance. It
Spiritually Speaking
is our spiritual destiny to perform good works that will always present themselves to us as opportunities to help others. Now here comes the easy to understand hard to do part. If, and only if, we accept the
As complicated as I make it sound in my search for purpose, my Christian game plan takes on “action status” when I get up in the morning and prepare to take on the day. When the opportunity
presents itself (and it will because the devil will see to it), I am now programmed to make the right choice. I don’t need a specific thing to do. All I need to concern myself with is undergirding everything I do with the fundamental principle of goodness. My steps have been ordered because the intent for all I do cannot be misunderstood by me or anybody else. Now I may fall short but I won’t fall off. Oh, to be recognized as a good person for what you do and not what you say. Oh to be recognized for trying to do God’s will. Take the Will of God and march into the world armed with the Word of God and maybe all of your questions will be answered too. I know a lot of mine have. May God bless and keep you always.

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas
By Patrice J. Holmes
editorial@dallasweekly.com
Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity
Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days
Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
