This is the ninth Father’s Day that I won’t be able to call my father, Joseph Smith. This will be the first Father’s Day that I won’t be able to pick up the phone and call my mother and talk about my father, Cheryl Smith because now she is also one of my angels, watching over me. While I don’t place a lot of emphasis on the commercialization of displaying love; I did enjoy the significance of recognizing parents on their “special days.” Interestingly, for the longest time, I didn’t know my exact birthdate. You see, as a child, we celebrated Father’s Day and my birthday on the same day, since it was the same month. I had a quick response anytime anyone would ask me, “when is your birthday?” I would proudly respond, “on Father’s Day!” It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I happened upon my birth certificate and saw the actual date. Still the day was special to me because yes, I am a daddy’s girl. Joe Smith set the standard for all men who entered into my life! There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of him and the lessons I learned as a child, then later as a college student at FAMU, and later as a “grown” woman. Now I took issue with the word “grown” because I considered myself to always be in a state of growth. As long as I had a breath in me, I would be continuing to grow. As Father’s Day approaches, I can’t help think about the folks who told me 9 1/2 years ago, that “he’s in a better place,” or “time will heal.” Almost a decade later I still want to tell those folks what horse to ride out on. Unfortunately for me, neither expression was the least bit healing for me. And there were times that my father was not around. I never thanked my mother for being both a mother and father to me. Instead I thanked her for the mother love, wisdom, experience and discipline that she so readily provided. Understanding the role of the father and mother, Earline knew that there were some things I needed from her and other things I needed from him. Over the years, I have observed the void felt by some who desperately missed the love of either a mother or father. People cope in different ways and some ways are not so positive. With the loss of one parent, I tended to lean on the other parent so much more. Unlike when I was a child and tried to lean in whatever direction would get me what I wanted at the time; when my father was gone, I turned to my mother and leaned even harder and longer. With the recent passing of my mother, I constantly remain in deep thought. Fortunately I spent time with both parents and addressed so many issues, concerns and questions. My discussions then help so much everyday as I have much to mull over when I find myself in a place where the pain of their physical absence is unbearable. Some people will pick up the phone and call or buy gifts on those “special” days. Take it from me. You need to make every day “special!” Cheryl !

The two cops were identified as Officer Alyn Beck, 42, who had been with the department since 2001 and leaves behind a wife and three children, and Officer Igor Soldo, 32, who joined the force in 2006 and is survived by a wife and baby.” It was later reported that this couple Jerad and Amanda the new aged Bonnie and Clyde, had immersed and enlisted themselves in a culture of hate. The couple had been unsuccessful in trying to join the armed stand against federal agents at Cliven Bundy’s Nevada ranch. They were told that they were "too radical." Bundy as you may remember, is the 67-year-old rancher who is engaged in a 20 year legal fight involving his cattle grazing on federal land. He is the patriarch of a large Mormon family and became a Conservative hero because of the standoff with the government. He was just about to hit the Conservative talk circuit when he made a mistake and commented that "black people were better off as slaves picking cotton."

Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall My grandmother, Portia Maudesta English Figures was a fine and upright Christian woman. She was the First Lady to my grandfather and was the modest matriarch of both family and church. She rarely if ever allowed gossip to cross her lips and she never used mean words. But if pushed, she would tell you the truth. And sometimes nothing sounds meaner than the truth. There was one adage she held that ran across my mind the other day. As I pondered the senseless deaths of two officers in Las Vegas I had to lean on her understanding. The Bible which was her daily almanac says; “Lean not to your own understanding” and I fully embrace that admonition. Sometimes when I can't find anything in the Bible I have to lean on grandmother’s understanding. Mrs. Figures said "A drunk man's word is a sober man's thought.” Slow down and take that in. She simply meant that when people are in an induced state of mind they have the potential and proclivity to flesh out their true feelings. The sad commentary is that I have come to the understanding that America, or some Americans, are drunk on hate. Jerad and Amanda Miller were intoxicated and delusional when they opened fire on two police officers in Las Vegas. The ABC News posting was the first that I read.

“Two police officers were gunned down by a man and a woman today as they were eating lunch in a Las Vegas pizza restaurant, officials said.” They were ambushed," Sheriff Doug Gillespie of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department said at a news conference this afternoon, though he said it was not yet known why the two were targeted.

Witnesses said the two yelled "This is a revolution" during the attack, but officials said they had not yet identified a motive for the shooting. "We don't know anything about the suspects yet," Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield told The Associated Press. The couple were later found dead, after they had shot and killed

But the Millers and Bundy’s are not the only evidence of this hate. It was hatred the kill Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis. It is hate that seems to daily produce another shooting at an elementary, high school or college campus. It is hate that won’t to allow this sitting U.S. Congress to move on behalf of poor people or anyone in need. Grandmother Figures was on point. Beyonce may be drunk on love, but America is drunk on hate and it shows.

The Meaning of Fatherhood From the President's Desk: I recently read a quote from Will Smith that stated, “There's so much negative imagery of Black fatherhood. I've got tons of friends that are doing the right thing by their kids, and doing the right thing as a father - and how come that's not as newsworthy?” PAGE 5

As a father, I must acknowledge this salient point. We are well aware of the issues and challenges facing Black men and fathers in America. We confront and address many of them every day in the work of the Urban League Movement, including disproportionate education and unemployment rates, mass incarceration, and health disparities. While I believe strongly in individual accountability, I also know that these societal inequities contribute to a narrative that has unfortunately overshadowed the many fathers who strive daily to “do the right thing” by their children and their communities.

These are the men who raise their biological children, serve as father-figures to countless more and stand as exemplars of lives well-lived. They understand that our children don’t just need our pocketbooks – they need our presence. Beyond our discipline, they need our direction. As important as the lessons that we teach them is the love that we give them. So, as we look to this Sunday, June 15, I wish all fathers a Happy Father’s Day – and especially salute those who approach “fatherhood” as the most important job any of us will ever have. National leaders in Media and Politics come to #NABJ14 RNC Chair Reince Priebus, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet, among Convention Headliners WASHINGTON, DC (June 12, 2014) - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) will hold its 39th Annual Convention and Career Fair, July 30- Aug. 3, in Boston. During the convention, attendees can expect to hear from national leaders from the worlds of media, politics, and culture. Republican and Democratic Party Chairs Featured as Plenary Speakers With midterm elections scheduled this fall, considered an early indicator of the 2016 presidential contest, ongoing questions about voting rights in several states, and the frequent discussion of identity politics, NABJ convention planners felt it is important to hear from the leaders of the nation's leading political parties.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) is the current chair of the Democratic National Committee, elected in May 2011. As her party's leader, she works to promote the Democratic Party's ideals and values, to support President Barack Obama's goals and objectives and to campaign for Democratic candidates across the nation at the local, state and national levels.

Reince Priebus was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee in January 2011 and reelected in January last year. His work leading his party's platform, support of GOP candidates, and daily operations has won him many fans who credit his passion and management skills with many of the Republican Party's recent successes. An attorney by training, Priebus had been a volunteer at the national level and chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, where he assisted with successful statewide campaigns for national and local oﬃces. Priebus will give remarks and be interviewed on Thursday, July 31, during the association's opening plenary. The interview will be conducted by CNN's Michaela Pereira and Kelly Wright of FOX News.

"I'm thrilled to be joining some of the nation's best reporters in Boston this summer ahead of the fall elections," Wasserman Schultz said. "The 2014 midterms are critical to the country's future, and Democrats are working in cities, counties, and states across America to create opportunity for all, and not just a few. First African American Editor of The New York Times Dean Baquet Comes to NABJ NABJ is pleased to announce that Dean Baquet, executive editor of The New York Times, will appear at convention. Named to the paper's top post in May after serving as its managing editor, Baquet is the first African-American to oversee the Times' newsroom. Baquet also served as editor and managing editor of The Los Angeles Times. In a prior stint at The New York Times, he was both an editor and a reporter. He has also worked for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and for The Chicago Tribune, where he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in 1988.

LADY DEE (Baltimore, M.D.) -- In tribute to an extraordinary, multifaceted career spanning more than seven decades as an actor, author, director, producer and civil rights activist, the NAACP and others responded to the death of Ms. Ruby Dee. With a career spanning seven decades and numerous achievements – including being an NAACP Spingarn recipient in 2008, Ruby Dee blazed a trail for African American artists by advocating for racial equality in the performing arts. She was a courageous and fearless activist, who tirelessly committed herself to social, economic and political causes, including emceeing the historic 1963 March on Washington. Ms. Dee will be deeply missed; but her contributions and legacy will live with us forever.” From Lorraine C. Through her many powerful roles, Ms. Dee paved the way for a generation of talented African American actresses. Almost a lifelong New Yorker, Ruby Dee was born Ruby Ann Wallace on October 27, 1924 (some sources report 1922) in Cleveland, Ohio. Her family soon moved to New York, and Dee was raised during the golden age of Harlem. After high school, she attended New York’s Hunter College, graduating in 1945. Expressive and literate, Dee was drawn to the theatre while still a college student. Dee acted in small Shakespearian productions and landed a role in the play, South Pacific in 1943. She also began to study with the American Negro Theatre, where she would meet her future husband, Ossie Davis. They would fall in love during a cross-country tour of Anna Lucasta. Ruby Dee’s career as an actress has been nothing short of phenomenal. A petite, intelligent actress of nuance and sensitivity, she was talented enough and lucky enough to garner some of the best roles for black women in the 1950s and 1960s. On stage, she was the first black woman to play lead roles at the PAGE 11

With a career in theater and film spanning seven decades across all forms of media, Dee was simply an icon. Dee helped pave the way in breaking down racial barriers in the entertainment world. “Dee, along with her late husband, actor Ossie Davis, were a dynamic team in the performing arts community. Oﬀ stage, they were also strong civil rights advocates, who used their celebrity to help advance social justice for African Americans. “On September 17, 2010, the CBCF celebrated and honored Dee for her public and civic accomplishments at our 40th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC). There, we heard a recording of her late husband’s rousing speech at CBCF’s firstever ALC in 1971. “Captured on Dee’s personal website is a statement she wrote reflecting on her and Davis’ life journey, ‘Along the way we have seen, heard, and learned many things that have cascaded unforgettably over our lives — things too precious not to share.’ “We appreciate the gifts Dee shared during her time with us. Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with the family and the many lives she touched.”

American Shakespeare Festival, and won an Obie Award for her portrayal of "Lena" in Athol Fugard's Boseman and Lena; a Drama Desk Award for her role in Alice Childress’ Wedding Band and an Ace Award for her performance in Eugene O'Neil's Long Days Journey Into Night. Dee has appeared in over 50 films. In 1950, she played Jackie Robinson’s wife in The Jackie Robinson Story and forty years later, she played his mother in the television production, The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson. Her film credits include: A Raisin In The Sun (1961), Uptight (1968), Buck And The Preacher (1972), Roots (1978), Do The Right Thing (1989) and The Delany Sisters: The First Hundred Years (1999). Dee won an Emmy Award for her performance in the Hallmark Hall of Fame production, Decoration Day. Throughout her film and television career, Dee has been selective and has brought that selectivity and dignity to every role she plays. She is particularly proud of her one-woman show, Zora Is My Name, about pioneering novelist, folklorist, anthropologist, Zora Neale Hurston. Dee and her husband are authors, storytellers and recording artists as well as actors. Her published works include the humorous, My One Good Nerve and various recordings for young people. In 1998, Dee and

Davis co-wrote the autobiographical book, With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together, in which they take turns telling their stories as actors, activists, a married couple and as parents. Dee’s life has not all been acting, however. She is a survivor of breast cancer for more than thirty years, and has long been active in a variety of movements. She, along with Davis, traveled to Lagos, Nigeria, as goodwill ambassadors, and eulogized Malcolm X in 1965 and later his widow, Betty Shabazz in 1997. Jointly presented with The Academy of Television Arts and Science’s Silver Circle Award in 1994, Dee and Davis oﬃcially became “national treasures” when they received the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2000, they were presented the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award. They are inductees in the Theater Hall of Fame as well as the NAACP Hall of Fame. In 2008, Dee was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, American Gangster. She also received an Academy Award nomination for this role. Ms. Dee was interviewed by The HistoryMakers on March 7, 2001.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of New Southern Dallas Transit-Oriented Development Featuring Apartments, Retail and Office Space Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway, along with other elected officials and community leaders will dedicate Lancaster Urban Village, the largest transit-oriented development to be built in Southern Dallas county. The new residential/retail/office space development is located next to Urban League of Greater Dallas headquarters and the Veteran's Administration Hospital on Lancaster Road in Oak Cliff. The $30 million 193-unit complex was developed as part of Mr. Caraway's economic development in the Lancaster Road corridor and part of the GrowSouth initiative. The ribbon cutting and dedication was held on Thursday, June 12. Lancaster Urban Village features 14,000 square feet of residential ad office space. Apartment amenities include private terraces, crown molding, ceramic tile baths, ceiling fans, microwave ovens, washer and dryers and more in each unit. The gated property also has a business center, fitness center, resort-style pool, outdoor lounge and picnic area. The development is the result of four years of planning and construction. Partners for the project include the City of Dallas, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Catalyst Development, Urban League of Greater Dallas, Texas Mezzanine Fund, US Bank and Greystone Bank.

THE NATION’S MAYORS TO GATHER IN DALLAS The United States Conference of Mayors 82nd Annual Meeting: Friday, June 20 – Monday, June 23 Washington, D.C. – Under the leadership of U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) President Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and host Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, more than 200 of the nation’s mayors from cities large and small will convene in Dallas at the OMNI Hotel to discuss the economic health of the nation’s cities, transportation, education, housing, help for returning Veterans and the minimum wage. Mayors will release new economic data showing economic output and jobs numbers for each of the nation’s 363 metropolitan areas on Friday morning at the OMNI during an Opening Press Conference with USCM Leadership. Mayors will also hear from several guest speakers including Maria Shriver who will discuss The Shriver Report and what mayors can do to address the 1 in 3 American women living on the brink of poverty. A hairy problem Ask Alma Dear Alma, I met a woman online about six months ago and we’ve been emailing ever since. We live in different states. She’s been very caring, and we seem to have the start to a wonderful friendship. I have one conflict, though: She has dreads down to her waist. This woman is in her 40s, is educated and not a musician. She is the perfect height and size. She looks totally professional… until you see her hair. Why would someone choose to wear her hair in a style that appears unattractive and unkempt? There must be other ways to express oneself and show one’s style. I’m really not as shallow as this sounds (it’s what’s inside that counts),

but it’s sometimes hard for people to get past initial impressions. Most of us try to do the best with what we’ve got, so I can’t understand purposely trying to look worse. I don’t think there is a chance for romance with her hair this way. Doesn’t she realize it detracts from any sex appeal she might be hiding underneath? I would like to remain friends with this woman and get to know her better, but I am uncomfortable with the attention she draws in public. I can’t ask her to cut her hair, either. How do you tell someone there’s this huge boulder in the way of getting closer? Is there any solution to this dilemma, or should I just forget about my new friend? E.P., Harrisburg, Penn. Dear E.P. My, my, my, you’re in a pickle, Mr. Whipple. I’d like to know if it’s the natural hairstyle of dread locs that you don’t like about your new boo, or is it that she’s not permed.

Either way, natural or permed, long or short, I think when it comes to the style of one’s own hair, it’s personal – an individual decision. Most women I know are under the impression that men prefer long, straight hair. That’s why weaves are so popular in our communities. That said, some women aren’t offended if a guy wants them to change their hairstyle. So I say tell her. You don’t have to be mean or insulting. Just mention that you’d like to see her with a particular style. It would probably help if you had a picture of the style you’d like. If she likes you, she probably won’t mind that you mentioned it. If she gets mad…well, then you’d have to decide what’s more important to you – her heart or her hair. Good luck! Power up Power on I remember reviewing the letters of Paul in bible study. In doing so I was constantly reminded that one cannot look at Paul without really seeing Jesus’ amazing handiwork. Now you need to know that I think Paul is an awesome person when it comes to the story of his life. I haven’t found a biography or autobiography of anyone in or outside of the ‘good book’ who comes close to my admiration for Paul; Jesus notwithstanding. Because the two are so closely associated with one another, I can’t help but consider the impact of this tandem on human history. Just in case someone wants to debate me on this by bringing up the lives of the 12 apostles, I have considered them as well as the prophets and I’m just one of those who is in awe of Paul. Fighting for those who fought for us! By: Rep. Joe Barton I was outraged when I learned about the secret wait lists at certain VA medical centers. As your Congressman one of my top priorities has been, and will remain, ensuring that the brave Americans who have served this country are treated properly. I believe that our veterans deserve a lifetime of opportunity and quality health care which is why the recent allegations concerning VA falsifying wait times is particularly troublesome. To begin the process of cleaning up this mess, I became an original cosponsor of H.R. 4810, the Veteran Access to Care Act of 2014, which would allow veterans who live more than 40 miles from a VA facility and have waited too long for an appointment to seek medical care in approved nondepartment facilities. With my support, this bill

overwhelmingly passed the House and I hope to see the Senate take this issue up quickly. I also voted for legislation which gives the Secretary of the Veterans Aﬀairs a greater ability to remove ineﬀective employees from positions of power. Closer to home, 23 of my Texas colleagues and I took things a step further. We sent a letter to the Acting Inspector General of the VA demanding a prompt and thorough investigation into the claims of mismanagement and deception in Texas VA centers. We were assured that the VA is taking these claims seriously and its investigation now includes centers in our state. My colleagues and I will not stop questioning the VA until we know what went wrong and determine how to prevent it from happening in the future.

It is Congress’ job to oversee and investigate bureaucratic wrongdoing at the VA while also ensuring that America’s promise to our veterans is upheld. Once we fully know the extent of wrongdoing in the VA we can begin to overhaul the system so that our veterans are better served. I believe that reform in the VA is necessary and it must come soon. I will continue to fight for those who fought for us and promise to keep you updated on the battle.

Moving forward will not be easy. The VA provides care for nearly 6 million veterans, 700,000 of whom are recent veterans from Iraq and Maya Angelou Afghanistan. As our military

NAACP issues Call to Action on Voting Rights Act Amendment

Fifty-one years ago this week, NAACP Field Secretary Medgar Wylie Evers was murdered for organizing blacks to register and to vote in Mississippi. In 2014, too many restrictions still limit access to the ballot box for blacks, Latinos, Native Americans, the elderly, youth and low-income citizens. Our basic rights are in jeopardy, and we must act.

As the Congressional leadership shifts, it is essential that Congress work in a bi-partisan manner to protect the right to vote – the sacred franchise that is the hallmark of a true democracy. Through the legislative process -beginning in the Senate and continuing in the House -- the Voting Rights Act Amendment must be supported and passed. It is the only guarantee for all citizens to be heard and for all votes to be counted. The National NAACP will honor the memory of Medgar Evers by issuing a call to action for full civic participation and representation in 2014, including:
