Message to the People... On June 20, 2014 Aaryn Blackwell would have celebrated his 30th birthday. Who knows, he might have been married with a few children or he might have followed Cheryl Smith in his father ’s footsteps and became a professional athlete. I met the talented young man when he was about seven years old. He and his little brother, Evan, were full of energy and they loved their mother! The 7th grader played soccer, football, basketball and the trumpet. He was always active and full of energy. In 1996, his death at school was a shock to all and 18 years later, I still fondly remember him and how devastating his death was. According to news reports at the time: A 12-year-old Garland boy died less than an hour after he complained of chest pains and collapsed during basketball practice at Dallas Christian School, school officials said. School officials said the gymnasium was filled with his basketball teammates when Aaryn Blackwell collapsed Monday. The exact cause of death was not undetermined. An autopsy was scheduled for today. At the time there was a lot of talk about undetected heart problems and the need for defibrillators at school athletic events. Defibrillators analyze the condition and then delivers the necessary electrical current that could restart a heart suffering from cardiac arrest. Aaryn is not the only young athlete to collapse during an athletic event. Since his death Congress was lobbied and defibrillators have been placed in many schools. On the occasion of Aaron’s 30th birthday, I wanted to remember him and pay tribute to a young man, one of many whose life ended way too soon. I also salute his parents for their leadership and efforts to raise a young man to be a productive member of society. And this brings me to those who still have their children. Are you doing the best you can to ensure that your child reaches his or her fullest potential? Do you even realize the awesome responsibility that you have as a parent? Sure we’ve heard over the years how there is no manual for child-rearing but that is not necessarily the case today. There are so many resources for those who want help in raising their children. It’s not easy. Even in 1996 there were outside forces, but today, the world is not a ghetto, it’s more like a jungle and its hard for both -- the children and the parents. That’s why it’s important that adults, and sadly children (who think they are adults) too, take precautions so that they are not reproducing before they are emotionally and mentally prepared. I’ve heard folks quote scripture in talking about training children. I’ve also heard parents criticized for how they are raising their children. We are at war against negative elements, dysfunctional people, an overactive media and deviant minds as our children are exposed to so much and enticed by even more. In the spirit of good kids like Aaryn Sterling Blackwell, we should all make a commitment to do more to be a positive influence in the lives of every child we meet.

Which Hoes? Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall The funniest thing happened as I on the way to write this installment. My intent was to enthusiastically endorse the City of Dallas as it seeks to raise the wages of our elected officials. However, the mind of the demented and twisted can be easily sidetracked or distracted by the least thing. Just as my creative juices began to boil I saw the latest video circulating of Pastor Jamaal Bryant of the Empowerment Temple in Baltimore Md. I’ll get back to the Council pay issue later. The Christian Post, which considers itself the largest purveyor of news on Christianity, could not resist covering the story. “Pastor Jamal Bryant blurted out the words "these hoes ain't loyal" during his recent sermon entitled "I'm My Enemies Worst Nightmare" and is now being criticized by many, including NYC Power 105.1 DJ and host Charlemagne

the God. Bryant was the subject of the shock jockey's "Donkey of the Day" segment this week where he exposes what he deems to be less than acceptable behavior from public figures. He goes on to play a clip where Bryant uses lyrics from Chris Brown’s hit record "Loyal" to make a point about men and women during his sermon. "Every brother would you tap another brother and say ‘I should have listened to her.’ God help me, all saints here forgive me but I gotta tell you these hoes ain't loyal," yelled Bryant. Charlemagne laughed about the sound bite before giving his two cents on it. "I don't care what Pastor Jamal Bryant was preaching about during his sermon, it is never any reason for a pastor to say 'these hoes ain't loyal,'" he said.

"First of all, what is Pastor Jamal Bryant doing listening to secular music anyway?" asked Charlemagne. "He needs to be listening to Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary." Wow!!! No comment on the subject for me. I've learned that some matters inside and outside the pulpit are for God and never for the rest of us. Reverend Bryant is not the first to go far left or right in order to engage a Christian congregation. The problem with most Negro churchgoers is their need to be entertained; which by definition calls for embellishment and hyperbole. Nowadays preachers have to create a show by any means necessary. The fact that Bryant used a song, secular or otherwise is a non-issue. The Christian Post went further to reveal a truth that even some ministers don’t know.

“Using popular culture to convey a message has been common in the church since Paul used excerpts from poems by the Greek poet Aratus to preach the Gospel in the book of Acts.” It was good enough for the alwaysengaging African Apostle Paul; it’s probably good enough to preach today. When you cut to the chase, the ugly truth is that songs like Chris Brown's “Loyal” are tame compared to some of the music that the DJ and Charlemagne play daily. Even the “clean” versions barely obscure their naked baseness and you can always tell which offensive lyrics were voiced over. If most parents were to listen to the lyrics of the songs their four-year-old and up children are regurgitating from urban radio, they would have to admit that they ain’t loyal either. Bryant used “Loyal” and although there is a public outcry about it, his congregation and his critics know well the source and substance of the song. So when he spat “These hoes ain't loyal,” maybe we should ask how “hoe” is defined, and understand that being a “hoe” is gender neutral. The scarcity of loyalty could be a national epidemic!!! As usual; Y'all play too much.

the world to look/ Upon your complexion and see community.” Dr. Maya Angelou, from the original poem “We Hear You,” a commemorative tribute to the National Urban League, performed at the organization’s Centennial celebration – July 28, 2010 In the week since her passing, there have been many tributes to the remarkable life of Dr. Maya Angelou. President Obama called her “one of the brightest lights of our time.” Former President Clinton described her as “a national treasure and a beloved friend.” Oprah Winfrey said, “She will always be the rainbow in my clouds.” But it is virtually impossible to sum up in words the many dimensions, the many gifts and the many lives touched by a woman who reigned in regality as the Queen Mother. As I said in my own tribute on the day of her passing, “Dr. Maya Angelou defies any single description. She defined the PAGE 4

essence of a ‘Phenomenal Woman’ for us.” Maya Angelou is best known to millions as a prolific poet and author. Her first (of six) autobiographies, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” inspired the legendary James Baldwin to write, “I have no words for this achievement, but I know that not since the days of my childhood, when the people in books were more real than the people one saw every day, have I found myself so moved.” As an author of numerous works of poetry and prose, Dr. Angelou continued until the hour of her passing to move us with her words and in so many other ways – as a singer, dancer, actor, activist, teacher, sage and much more. It is widely known that she did not speak for several years following a tragic childhood rape that resulted in the murder of her rapist. But, instead of remaining closed and silent, Dr. Angelou spread her wings, found her voice and soared into the hearts, minds and souls of millions of people around the world. In a lifetime arising out of hard times, there was almost nothing she couldn’t do or didn’t try. Her official website, mayaangelou.com, recounts that, “As a young single mother, she supported her son by working as a waitress and cook…” In the 1940s, she became the first Black woman streetcar conductor in San Francisco. She even

once worked as an auto body shop paint remover. She was also an accomplished dancer and singer. She has written a Pulitzer Prize nominated screenplay, “Georgia, Georgia,” and was nominated for a 1973 Tony Award for her Broadway performance in “Look Away.” She has danced with Alvin Ailey, toured Europe in “Porgy and Bess” and made numerous appearances in films and on TV. Dr. Maya Angelou was a modern day Renaissance woman who lived her own philosophy, “Pursue the things you love doing and do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” Maya Angelou was also a committed civil rights activist. She was a friend and confidante of Malcolm X. She once served as coordinator of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Since 1982, she served as Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University. As her son, Guy Johnson, described her, she was “a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace.” The National Urban League will forever be grateful for her spell-binding !

appearance at our 100th anniversary celebration in 2010, where she delivered an original commemorative poem entitled “We Hear You.” Like us, the world could not help but hear the powerful words and wisdom of Dr. Angelou. She left us with a final wish. On May 23rd, five days before her death, she tweeted, “Listen to yourself and in that quietude you might hear the voice of God.” We will miss her incredible creative and generous spirit. But the love and vision of Dr. Maya Angelou will continue to rise. It is up to all of us to make sure that we continue to rise with her. !

Services Planned for Earline Elizabeth Gadson Editor’s note: Cheryl Smith, publisher of I Messenger, is the oldest daughter of Earline Elizabeth Gadson. A wake will be held for Earline Elizabeth Gadson, Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 7:15p.m. with the funeral on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 11a.m., both at Golden Gate Funeral Home. Earline lived a full life - and she enjoyed every minute of it with her beloved children, extended family and the friends she seemingly made so easily. She moved to Dallas in November 2012 after a career working as a dental hygienist in Newark, NJ. She also worked (at Newark Liberty International Airport) for Delta and National airlines and International Security Systems of New York and New Jersey. Last September, her 79th birthday, was one of her happiest moments ever. She was surrounded by loved ones and, for a day, she was Queen of her own throne. Almost everyone whom she loved - and who loved her - was at her feet: Her grandson Andre returned from Japan for the occasion. His wife, Emma, cracked crab legs. Earline ate until her heart was content. This was bliss for "Mother," as she was affectionately called. The moment epitomized her lessons to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren over her lifetime: Be loving and caring and always do the right thing. More, than anything, Mother wanted her family to be together, to be happy and to love one another. She didn't like arguing and bickering. She wanted her children to know that she loved them and was so proud of them. Family love came from deep within her. She was born on September 10, 1934, the first daughter of James and Rosa Knight Gadson in PAGE 6

living. The group was close-knit and their relationships lasted more than half a century.

As the baby girl, there were many around to pamper little Earline and she enjoyed the attention. When she was a teenager, her parents moved the family to the Strawberry Capitol of the United States - Plant City, Fla. Even as a young child, Earline stood out. She was a stylish dresser, a cheerleader and an honor student at Marshall High School.

Earline immediately went to work. She had big dreams, including one day returning to Florida to build her mother a house. But shortly after she arrived in Newark, tragedy struck back home: Her mother Rosa Knight Gadson was murdered in Plant City. Following her mother’s funeral, Earline returned to Newark.

After graduation, she bypassed college and followed her brother Robert to Newark, NJ, where several friends from Florida were already

Those who knew the couple marveled at how Earline doted over her babies: Daryl, Cheryl, Carl, who died at birth, and Tracy, who was born later to her and Earl Vickers. Often told that there wasn’t a camera she didn’t like, Earline loved taking pictures. She had a good reason: She was left only with mental images of her parents. “All these years, I just have the memory of my parents because I don’t have any pictures,” she once explained. “I really wish I had pictures of them and even though I can describe them perfectly – my mother’s long beautiful hair and my father’s pretty black skin and wavy hair I would really love to see them.

Over the years she has encouraged younger family members to keep the family reunions going. She knew it was a lot of work, but she believed it was important work because it kept the family ties strong. Mother said she’d rather get together for family reunions than funerals. She was a devoted member of the historic New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. Mother was a life member of the National Council of Negro Women and an active member of the NAACP. She served as vice-president of the NAACP’s New Hope Baptist Church Branch. When she moved to Dallas, Mother became a member of Friendship-West Baptist Church

Leagues, often traveling with the Newark Indians. She watched and grew to love the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, but during football season her heart belonged to the New York Giants. That is until she relocated and became a Dallas Cowboys fan. But, for some reason, she didn’t embrace the Texas Rangers. It seems she never forgave Nolan Ryan for the damage he caused when the Texas Rangers played the Yankees. With her health steadily declining, Mother acknowledged that smoking took a toll on her life. By the time she stopped, the damage was done.

“That’s why I take so many pictures!”

Her message to anyone who smokes or who is thinking about smoking: “DON’T!”

When her children were younger, she worked as a volunteer leader with 4-H Clubs, bringing them together with other children in Newark for projects and trips to Coney Island, Wildwood theme park and Atlantic City.

“Smoking hurts you but it also hurts those you love,” she said. Mother died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at her home in Dallas. She was surrounded by family members and a wonderful nurse, Shasha Nicole Wells.

Family was very important to Mother.

She lived a full life and enjoyed each season of it.

Her family included five brothers, Robert Jones (Carolyn); James Gadson Jr.; Sammie Gadson (Bobbie); Curtis Gadson (Hazel); and Eddie Gadson (Catherine); four sisters, Lucille Kelly (Leroy); Ethel Bee Hunter (Don); Flora Lee Keys (Lawrence Sr.); and Annie Mae Walker (David).

Left to cherish her memory and life lessons are her children: Daryl Smith, Cheryl Smith and Tracy Smith Thomas (Jeffrey); her goddaughter Carla Simon; her grandchildren Andre (Emma), Alayna, Annya, Ayanna, Adarian, Adonte, Arron Mustafa Hall-Smith, Jeffrey, Joelene, Paul and J.R.; greatgrandchildren Aaliyah (father DeMarcus),Briana, Nina, Telly, O’Neil, J.J. and Layla; her brother Eddie Gadson and sister-in-law Bobbie.

She and Joseph (who died in 2004) made sure that their children regularly visited relatives “down South.” Visitations were a two-way trip: Mother had an open door policy when any Florida relatives wanted to head “up North.” For decades, her home was the place for nieces, neighbors and friends who migrated northward and needed a place to land while they “got on their feet.” Her niece Thelma came in the early 1960s. Her goddaughter Carla and her son, Jonathan, made their way to Newark in the late 1970s. Her grandniece Tina followed in more recent years. Mother also made room for foster children over the years. She took much joy in planning her family’s 1997 reunion. Family members were treated to lavish meals, a boat ride and wonderful gifts. Mother wanted them to know how much they meant to her. PAGE 7

and always enjoyed her visits with Pastor James Fitzgerald. One of her passions was going to Atlantic City for “therapy!” She especially enjoyed visits from her sister Annie Mae, nephew Nathaniel and his wife Rose and her grandniece Linda. They would arrive from Tampa, Florida for a full-blown vacation of “therapy.” In Dallas, she found new friends. One friend, Patsy, from time to time, joined her for “therapy” in Oklahoma. Like her brothers Curtis and Eddie, Mother loved baseball and was a fan of the Negro

Also cherishing memories of Mother are her life-long friends Savarie Atkins and Christine Thomas; special friends Rev. Harry Brown, Eleanor Glover and Virginia Magee; daughter-in-law Hafizah; and hundreds of other relatives, NCNW and NAACP members and friends. A scholarship fund has been established in her name and donations can be made to the Earline Elizabeth Gadson Memorial Scholarship Fund, 320 South R.L. The ADD will identify, recruit, direct and liaison with volunteer leadership; develop and maintain formal campaign organizational structure in concert with National UNCF leaders and develop local campaign goals. The ADD’s responsibilities include: planning and implementing campaign strategies consistent with UNCF national action plan and policies; developing and submitting solicitation proposals; managing, designing and implementing fundraising events; and developing and preparing campaign materials, communication/promotional programs in support of established fund-raising efforts in the Dallas territory. Requirements: A Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university required with 7-10 years experience in fund-raising and a proven track record of achieving revenue targets or goals. CURRY: e Question No One is asking Donald Sterling By George E. Curry NNPA Editor-in-chief Why would a White racist have sex with a person of color? That’s the question that few people in the media want to raise, let alone address. But it is an age-old contradiction not limited to Donald Sterling, the hate spewing soon-to-be former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. Beginning with slavery in the original colonies – even earlier in Africa with the arrival of European colonizers – White men have forced themselves on Black women. Caucasian men from Thomas Jefferson on the left to South Carolina Senator and longtime archsegregationist Strom Thurmond on the right have projected one image in public while having sex – even children – with Black women under the cover of darkness. They were talking White (superiority) while sleeping Black. I don’t for a moment pretend to know how to explain this obvious contraction. But in the case of Thomas Jefferson, the chief author of the Declaration of Independence, contradictions became a way of life long before he bedded and had children with Sally Hemings, a Black woman. Jefferson will forever be inextricably linked to these words in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” At the time our Founding Fathers were proclaiming unalienable rights from God, most of them were enslaving God’s dark-skin creations. Jefferson enslaved nearly 200 African Americans. As Columbia University history professor Eric Foner wrote, “Slaves, of course, experienced the institution of politics and law quite differently from white Americans.

Before the law, slaves were property who had virtually no legal rights. They could be bought, sold, leased and seized to satisfy an owner’s debt, their family ties had no legal standing, and they could not leave the plantation

He mentioned how he had arranged for Mrs. Williams to attend the college while he was governor…,” Williams wrote. ‘When a man brings a child in the world, he should take care of that child,’ he told me, and added, “She’ll never say anything and neither will you. Not while I’m alive.’” And neither did – until after Thurmond’s death. In Remembrance of Dr. Maya Angelou On a bitterly cold morning in January of 1993 during the first Inauguration of President William Jefferson Clinton, the late raconteur, Maya Angelou, captured the very soul of our nation while reciting her poem entitled, “On the Pulse of Morning.” She was only the second poet to recite at a presidential swearing-in ceremony. I sat in the cold with other members of the Congress, the new president, vice-president, members of the Supreme Court and tens of thousands who had come to witness the inaugural ceremonies. Dr. Angelou, like the new president, was born in Arkansas, mesmerized all that heard her voice that morning. In her lyrical poem she said that an ancient rock cried out for all of humanity, challenging people to stand upon its back, and face a collective destiny, and a changing world. In her eclectic life, Dr. Angelou, a single parent who struggled financially to raise her young son, pursued careers as a stage actress, a poet, a street car driver, a magazine editor, a civil rights organizer, a college professor and a calypso dancer.

A winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest award given to a civilian by our government, Dr. Angelou lived a full and purposeful life. Just days before her passing she was planning a social gathering in her home in New York City. She was an elegantly striking woman who stood nearly six feet tall. She liked to dance, she drank bourbon and she was passionately devoted to the reading of scripture. She and a fellow writer, the late Amiri Baraka once joyously danced over the ashes of the great writer, Langston Hughes. In her voracious writings, Dr. Angelou explored the concepts of personal identify and resilience through the multi-faceted lens of racial identity, sexual engagement,

the human family and the necessity to love. In 1969, Dr. Angelou’s acclaimed autobiographic work, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” became a best seller, and its commercial success opened the door for other African-American female writers who until that time had been largely ignored by the publishing industry. Ever an instructor and teacher, Dr. Angelou, a full professor, taught for years at Wake Forest University, a relatively small liberal arts institution in North Carolina. Her presence in the lecture halls of Wake Forest drastically affected the lives of many of the students and teachers she encountered. Students from universities located hundreds of miles from Wake Forest flocked to the school to listen to Dr. Angelou’s lectures. Those who wanted to speak with

her were given her personal phone number at her home. While she befriended presidents such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Dr. Angelou was comfortable with the men and women who found themselves unemployed and wedded to urban street corners and coal mines. During the eight decades and six years that Dr. Angelou lived among us she gave of herself without any thought of personal gain. She was unabashedly committed to the improvement of the human condition. She loved people with no concern for their race, their place of birth or their religious beliefs. Indeed, the world has lost one of it great citizens, and God has gained another angel. She wrote and articulated so many profoundly important messages. I shall never forget that January morning when she charged our nation, intellectually and spiritually. Her presence is etched in my soul. “No one can dim the light that shines from within,” she once admonished us. Dr. Angelou’s light shall shine eternally.

Rose opens satellite office in Balch Springs Dallas, TX -- Representative Toni Rose (District 110) will open a satellite office in the city of Balch Springs with an official grand opening and ribbon cutting on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. The office will be housed at the Balch Springs Library and Learning Center at 12450 Elam Road. Hours of operation will be the 2nd and 4th Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. The main district office will remain open and is located at 3730 S. Lancaster Road, Suite 160, Dallas, Texas 75216. The Balch Springs location will give constituents in East Dallas, Balch Springs and Mesquite better access to the Representative and her staff for assistance with legislative questions or concerns, as well as assistance with state agencies. The City of Balch Springs is located 16 miles east of downtown Dallas, with an estimated 25,000 residents. The hurtful part of infidelity, the author said, is the deception, not the sex act. Should a man tell his wife that he wants to sleep with another woman, or should a wife tell her

Game Time From back in the day, I remembered how hard it was for me to realize that I am in the middle of a battlefield, as are you, and Satan really does want us as trophies. I can’t remember ever being so popular as to be the prize in such a high stakes game of life and death, where my only weapon is my faith.
