Message to the People... How Don't Believe the Hype celebrity bowl-a-thon came into existence In March 1990, Reporters Roundtable, a public affairs talk show featuring Cheryl Smith journalists, was introduced to Dallas-Fort Worth's KKDA-AM 730 listening audience, with news director Shaun Rabb as the host. The first panel, joining Shaun, included: then Dallas Examiner editor Charles O'Neal and Dallas Weekly editor Cheryl Smith. By late May, Shaun had accepted an anchor position at Fox 4 News and I became the host of Reporters Roundtable. When KKDA's microphone closed for the last time, it was in my 22nd year as the host, winning numerous awards and interviewing several notables including: Minister Louis Farrakhan, Tavis Smiley, Dick Gregory, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL), Dionne Warwick, Iyanla Vanzant, Chuck D, Sister Souljah, Russell Simmons, Doug Williams, former FAMU President Frederick Humphries, the late Mamie Till Mobley, Nikki Giovanni. Journalists include, Susan Taylor, George E. Curry, Ralph Wiley, Ed Gordon, Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dewayne Wickham, the Hollywood Trainer, Tyler Perry and Bishop T.D. Jakes. In 1994, while hosting the award winning radio talk show, I came up with the idea of a fundraiser to benefit area youth and provide scholarship and internship opportunities. Taking the title from the hit song, Don't Believe the Hype, by rap group Public Enemy, I named the Foundation and focused on programming that would uplift and educate. The first event was a celebrity bowl-a-thon that brought out many local celebrities, in addition to Public Enemy members Chuck D and Malik Farrakhan, comedian Dick Gregory and Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk. In the following years singers Eric Benet and Miles Jaye, comedians Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Shuckey Duckey, Nanette Lee, D. Ellis, Joe Torry, David A. Arnold, and Hope Flood, actresses Virlinda Stanton, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Dawnn Lewis and Irma P. Hall, SCLC National President Charles Steele, State Representatives Terri Hodge, Marc Veasey, Helen Giddings and Yvonne Davis, former Dallas Police Chief Ben Click, Senator Royce West, Constable Derrick Evans, Judges Lee Jackson, Thomas G. Jones and Maryellen Hicks, Dallas Fire Chief Eddie Burns, County Commissioner John Wiley Price, Country Western sensation IMAJ, and former U.S. Congressman Martin Frost have been among the many who have supported the Celebrity Bowl-a-thon Weekend! Beneficiaries have included the Jeffries Street Learning Center, the Emmett Till Foundation, African American Museum, Africa Care Academy, the Dallas Examiner's Future Speak, National Association of Black Journalists' Region VII and V Conferences, Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists' Scholarship Fund and Urban Journalism Workshop and Sen. Royce West's Dr.Emmett J.Conrad Internship Program. Past sponsors include: AT&T, American Airlines, Evans Engraving, TXU, Clear Channel Outdoor, Mesa Printing, KKDA, K104 and KRNB, The Dallas Weekly, The Dallas Examiner, dallasblack.com, ntheknow.com, dallasurbanevents.com, Sweet Georgia Brown, Bank One, TV One, Black McDonald's owners, Off the Bone Barbecue and Coca Cola. This year, we are joined by Throttle Monsters, Inc., Heroes's House, Karrington & Company, Golden Gate, Inc., Cabot Cheese and Mocca Cosmetics.

Juneteenth 2014 Resolution Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Whereas HB 194 of the 110th Congress extended its apologies for the stench of slavery and commenced with the revelation; “Millions of Africans and their descendants were enslaved in the United States and the 13 American colonies from 1619 through 1865,” and Whereas slavery in America resembled no other form of involuntary servitude known in history, as Africans were captured and sold at auction like inanimate objects or animals, and Whereas Africans forced into slavery were brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized, and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their names and heritage and families were torn apart after having been sold separately from one another, and Whereas slavery was not officially abolished until the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 after the end of the Civil War, and Whereas after emancipation from 246 years of slavery, AfricanAmericans soon saw the fleeting political, social, and economic gains
they made during Reconstruction eviscerated by virulent racism, lynchings, disenfranchisement, Black Codes, and racial segregation Whereas the system of de jure racial segregation known as Jim Crow, which arose in certain parts of the Nation following the Civil War to create separate and unequal societies for whites and AfricanAmericans, was a direct result of the racism against persons of African descent engendered by slavery; Whereas a century after the official end of slavery in America, Federal action was required during the 1960s to eliminate the dejure and defacto system of Jim Crow throughout parts of the Nation, though its vestiges still linger to this day; Whereas African-Americans continue to suffer from the complex interplay between slavery and Jim Crow—long after both systems were formally abolished—through enormous damage and loss, both tangible and intangible, including the loss of human dignity, the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity; Whereas the story of the enslavement and de jure segregation of African-Americans and the dehumanizing atrocities committed against them should not be purged from or minimized in the telling of American history;
Whereas on July 8, 2003, during a trip to Goree Island, Senegal, a former slave port, President George W. Bush acknowledged slavery’s continuing legacy in American life and the need to confront that legacy when he stated that slavery was “One of the greatest crimes of history,” and Whereas President Bill Clinton also acknowledged the deep-seated problems caused by the continuing legacy of racism against AfricanAmericans that began with slavery when he initiated a national dialogue about race; Whereas Writer, Historian and Professor Ta-Nehisi Coates points out in his brilliant academic essay ; “The Case for Reparations” that African Americans have endured 250 years of slavery, 90 years of Jim Crow, 60 years of separate but equal, 35 years of racist housing policy after the Civil Rights Bill, and Whereas slavery, discrimination and egregious impediments to building or sustaining wealth were legislated and condoned by the United States government in all three of its constitutionally affixed branches, and Whereas today according to the Pew Research Center, White households are worth roughly 20 times as much as black households and whereas only 15% of whites have zero or negative wealth, more
than 35% of blacks fall below that line, and Whereas the entrenched gap and wealth is highlighted by the fact that black families making $100,000 typically live in the kinds of neighborhoods inhabited by White families making 30,000, and Whereas in 2010 the Justice Department filed a discrimination suit against Wells Fargo alleging that the bank shunted blacks into predatory loans regardless of the credit worthiness and had an emerging markets unit specifically targeted black churches, and its template of discrimination went viral through American banking institutions Therefore be it resolved that Juneteenth and its historical mimicking of freedom are just that, and the United States of America is derelict in its promise to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness to African American people. Be it further resolved that the dereliction that has caused 400 years of significant wealth to millions and significant suffering to the descendants of those enslaved Africans who built this country be satisfied with monetary and substantial reparations to the same. This month marks 50 years since the seminal events of Freedom Summer helped shift the national mood around the fight for civil rights in America. It was June 1964 that this seminal campaign, also known as the Mississippi Summer Project, brought thousands of civil rights activists and volunteers together – mostly white PAGE 4

Ironically, last summer, the Supreme Court of the United States launched its own tragic attack on voting rights with a specious ruling that declared Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional, or, as Congressman John Lewis observed, that “put a dagger in the heart” of the law. As we celebrate 50 years since the Freedom Summer campaign that prompted a nation to act, we must move forward in its spirit of vigilance and discontent. Increased efforts by some states to enact new voter ID laws and other restrictive measures demand that we not just commemorate Freedom Summer, but that we also continue to defend and protect what President Johnson called “the first right and most vital of all our fights” – the right to vote. !

The "Democratic" Origin and Evolution of Racism By EZRAH AHARONE
Einstein reasoned, you "cannot alter a condition with the same mindset that created it in the first place." In other words, solutions require thinking that transcends the mindset which caused and/ or contributes to undesirable conditions. Using this premise to examine racism in America, the question becomes: To what origin is modern racism anchored and how can existing bounds of thought be transcended for new national discourse to redress the causes and conditions? First, some honest but controversial realities must be recognized since racism did not emerge unexplainably. Racism in America originated from democracy in America. But America finds this offensive since it makes America's character appear no different than "undemocratic" people that America "won't negotiate with" today. To deflect this onus, America maintains the flawed notion that the impact of slavery and segregation is inconsequential . . . that 50 years of desegregation somehow nullifies 4 centuries of dehumanization. This popularizes the misbelief that racism is no longer structural nor intrinsic to society, but rather attitudinal and limited to "random" outbursts from "fringe" individuals like Donald Sterling, whose proposed punishment involves forcing him to profit from selling the Clippers (with 12 of 14 players being Black) for $2 billion. Modern racism is an extension of 1619 slavery, conjoined to profiteering. Despite the grandeur, July 4, 1776 is when racism was not only normalized in democracy, but also camouflaged through flowery language in America's founding documents. This has furnished American democracy with a velvetglove exterior that encases the racism of its interior. Hence, no other contemporary people in a "democracy" have undergone more systemic racism longer than African Americans . . . and although slavery is immoral, it wasn't quite "immoral-enough" to discredit anyone from making Mt. Rushmore. To be fair, upon ridding themselves from what they deemed British tyranny, the founders could have genuinely become extraordinary by simply honoring their "creed of equality." But rather than condemn slavery, they used their sovereign powers to enforce slavery. This helped incubate a fixed ideo-political environment for "guilt-free racism" to saturate society inter-generationally, whereby reparations is still dismissed as near-laughable. Based on "military necessity"emancipation occurred in 1865 but without proper conciliatory or compensatory measures.
PAGE 6
!
Democracy thereafter produced 99 more years of systemic racism that encompassed: reconstruction failures; sharecropping peonage; Black Codes; convict leasing; thousands of uninvestigated lynchings; medical experimentations at Ivy League universities; and Lincoln's 13th Amendment that abolished slavery, yet provided wiggle-room for slavery to exist "as a punishment for crime." Moreover, the 13th Amendment insultingly comprises only 43 words. Think about it – How can 2½ centuries of institutionalized slavery and racism be earnestly amended in merely 43 words? Paula Deen used more words to apologize for saying the N-word, and Imus for saying "nappy-headed hoes." Racism has also evolved over time, whereas racists norms once entailed having your wife "borrowed" for the night; or being lynched to the delight of mobs for "being too big for your britches;" or being prohibited from drinking "white water" while policemen cannonball-blast you with white fire-hydrant water. Today however, Obama is president; Oprah is a billionaire; Dr. King has a holiday; Jay Z's partnership with Barney’s remains intact; Denny's serves Black people; and the Clippers have a symbolic interim Black CEO. Racism now though is metaphorically like "death by a thousand cuts" from subtle but certain subordination and disparities in housing, healthcare, education, employment (firing/hiring/ promotions/salary), wealth, profiling, arrests, incarcerations, etc. And even more problematic is the psycho-subliminal aspects of racism . . . Since the 1940s, the Clarks' "Doll Experiment" proves that Black children are socially engineered (by age-5) to regard Black dolls/people as inferior, uglier, badder and dumber than White dolls/people. This confirms the pathologies of what W.E.B. Dubois (1903) termed "Double Consciousness" and Carter Woodson (1933) termed "Mis-Education,"
which stagnate original Black development and world contributions. Such engineering also constricts the boundaries of thought that require transcending to redress racism, as Einstein alluded. In response, African Americans should aver to no longer allow the historiography of the Black experience to be politically tortured with skewed idealisms until it falsely confesses the sanitized versions of democracy that anchor the structural, attitudinal, psychological racism of today. This perhaps can initiate new national discourse on racism to snip other pseudodemocratic tenants and tentacles that tie to more centuries-old falsehoods that African Americans should also learn to unlearn. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This article was culled in part from Ezrah's forthcoming book The Sovereign Psyche. Ezrah Aharone is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Delaware State University and the author of two acclaimed political books: Sovereign Evolution: Manifest Destiny from Civil Rights to Sovereign Rights and Pawned Sovereignty: Sharpened Black Perspectives on Americanization, Africa, War and Reparations. This was the first time the Congress has been held in Dallas. The City of Dallas and the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau proudly secured the annual gathering, making it the Dallas' largest African American national gathering for 2014. The official host venues for the six-day Congress are the Sheraton Dallas Hotel and the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center. Dr. George Waddles serves as President of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, which is an auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention USA, Incorporated led by President, Dr. Julius Scruggs, pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama.
Thr!ve program provides internships and mentorships Thr!ve Intern and Leadership Program has announced that 35 employers in the Dallas area have hired more than 100 AfricanAmerican boys for a 6-week intern and professional development program. Nationally known leaders spoke to the Thr!ve participants during a two-day Leadership and Development Institute. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III recently stood with several organizations earlier this year when President Obama announced the $200 million, fiveyear initiative to create job opportunities for high school African-American and Latino boys. According to a recent report from NPR, "Is The Deck Stacked Against Black Boys In America," President Obama challenged hundreds of organizations to invest in our youth by working in the community to create job and internship opportunities and later recognized the work done by Dr. Haynes with the Thr!ve Program during a press conference in April. PAGE 7

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Robbie Tolan, Tim Brown, Bethel Johnson, Community Leaders, Sponsors and Partners joined Dr. Haynes for the press conference to talk about how in 90 days the Thr!ve program has collaborated with a community of business owners, corporations and volunteers to invest in the future of African American male youth. "We believe employment, mentorship and professional development are giant steps to cure a multitude of ills,” said Pastor Haynes. "We are teaching young men to lead, to follow - and most importantly how to work and be mentored.” Pastor Haynes has gained nationwide attention in his fight for equality for people of color, against mass incarceration, and many other social issues that affect the marginalized. His vision for Thr!ve is to prepare young scholars for future leadership.
Robbie Tolan talks about how Thrive program levels playing field for young men. He was shot by police and the bullet is still inside of him. He said he has a constant reminder of injustices. From a March to a Movement at Friendship-West with Pastor Haynes. Bethel Johnson talks about his first job and how important it is to take care of your health.

Message from Garland NAACP June 25, 2014 marks the one-year anniversary that the Supreme Court of the United States of America struck down section 4 of the Voting Rights Acts, the provision of the landmark civil rights law that designated which parts of the country must have changes to their voting laws cleared by the federal government or in federal court.

We, the officers, Executive Committee, and members of the NAACP Garland, Texas unit stand in continued opposition to this ruling and we urge Congress to pass newly written legislation, the Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA) to protect Texas voters from voter discrimination. The VRAA would provide common sense solutions to prevent discrimination against all voters regardless of race, including: ! remedies to address current discrimination as it is occurring ! an ability to review voting changes in places that have engaged in discrimination in the present and recent past, and ! improve the public’s notification of potential voting changes to enhance accountability. Last June in Shelby County v. Holder when the Supreme Court invalidated a key section of the Voting Rights Act, it opened the door for Congress to enact additional legislation. As part of the decision, the Supreme Court invited Congress to revise the VRA to provide for protections against voting discrimination that better reflect current circumstances. Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. The local members of the Garland NAACP unit are no different. Inaugural Community Dance Camp ends with Final Class and Performance held Juilliard dancer Amber Pickens returns to her Southern Dallas roots to share the art of dance with children in a dance camp as part of her Art Belongs to People educational outreach campaign. The students, ages 8-12, are having a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience ballet and modern dance taught by a professional dancer. The two-week dance camp is a vision of Ms. Pickens to give back to her Southern Dallas community through dance. The students had their final dance class and performance on June 26. Ms. Pickens founded Art Belongs to People as a way to give back to underserved communities through dance and the performing arts. Believing in the power of change through the arts, she knows that arts education encourages creative thinking while developing necessary skills for independent and collaborative work. Ms. Pickens' goal is to conduct dance and performing arts workshops for disadvantaged children and youth attending
schools in grades K-12. Outreach programs are currently held in Harlem and Durban, South Africa. This is the first year that a dance camp has been held in Dallas. Ms. Pickens chose St. Philip's as the venue for the camp because she attended the school as a student in the second and third grade. A 2011 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Ms. Pickens has soared in the dance industry. She is currently a fourth-year student in the BFA Dance Program at the Juilliard School in New York. Growing up in Southern Dallas, she is quite familiar with the lack of opportunities presented for children and youth to experience the performing arts due to limited awareness and funding. Ms. Pickens has been honored with numerous awards that include recognition as a Texas Young Master of the Arts and recognition by Nigel Lythgoe and his Dizzy Feet Foundation as one of America's outstanding dancers at the 2013 National Dance Day Celebration Gala in Los Angeles. "Dance is such an amazing way to bring children and youth together," says Ms. Pickens. "The kids are having such a fun time in the dance camp. They are learning ballet and new ways to exercise through motion. It is such a great feeling to be home in Dallas and sharing the gift of dance." !

Student debt and America’s future Students in America today are facing a challenge unlike any previous generation before them record levels of debt. Students are graduating with higher levels of debt that is greatly crippling their ability to get a foothold in the American Economy. President Obama has recently taken an executive action to assist students who borrow money to finance their higher education. I am in full support of the President’s bold and forward thinking steps aimed at decreasing student debt. The President’s “Pay as you Earn” initiative will cap federal student loan payments to tenpercent of their monthly income. Students with private loans can refinance their loans at today's lower interest rates. This action will allow graduates the financial breathing room to start investing in their futures, without the disproportionate burden of

student loan repayments hanging over their heads. Each year, 20 million young Americans enroll in college. Of that number, 12 million borrow to meet the obligations of their educational expenses. Given the nation’s slow economic growth, many of these graduates are (and will be) unable to secure employment within the six-month grace period. In 2013, the unemployment rate for college graduates between the ages of 22 and 27 was 5.6 percent according to Bloomberg. More concerning is the fact that many of our nation’s youth are denied access to higher education.
As a society, we must invest in our students and in their ability to pursue higher education.
According to studies by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, college enrollment in America has declined by 12.8%, partially due to rising college costs. They simply cannot afford it and are frightened by the massive amounts of debt that they will have to assume. Under the executive order, student borrowers that make regular loan repayments may have their remaining balances forgiven after 20 years of regular payments. Teachers, nurses, military personnel and other public servants will be eligible to have their remaining debt forgiven after
!
The global ranking of American students, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math is on a steady decline. We can regain the position of prominence we once enjoyed, and that our nation desperately needs, if we invest in our students. Burdening them with massive debt is a tremendous disservice to them and to our country. Higher education has always been viewed as society’s great equalizer. The president’s most recent executive order and the progressive measure before Congress will ensure that our colleges and universities will continue to be the bastions of equality that the founders of this great nation intended them to be.

Too Much Information for our Spouse? Ask Alma Dear Alma, I am crushed and ashamed that my daughter is pregnant. My young, unmarried, “from a Christian home daughter is pregnant. This is just the worst thing that could have happen. Her father died when she was young, and I feel like this is all my fault. I sent her to visit family for the summer and she came back pregnant. How can I ever show my face in church again? Darlena C., Tulsa, Oklahoma Lookahear, sister Mary Magdalene, I’m not sure what church you attend, but you need to find one with some scared-kneed folks.
Sure, this is a bad situation, but let’s put things into their proper perspective: First, why is it that mothers feel so totally guilty when our young, unwed daughters get pregnant? Are we simply embarrassed, or are we pained by the future that lies ahead for them – a future we view through the prism of our own failed life choices and experiences? Mother to mother, you do need to ring your daughter’s bell one good time – with words, of course, nothing demeaning or physical. Lay it all out. Let her know that you are disappointed. You’ve got to or you’ll release that negative energy in another direction. Be clear that disappointment does not mean you won’t support her. Reassure your daughter that you love her unconditionally. Don’t forget to give her a hug. You’ve got to make a decision right here, right now, to support your daughter and lay down the future rules of engagement. For example, she will be a mother! Not the baby mama, baby friend or co-mother to Grandmama’s baby. You hear me? This is not your baby. As for your church family,
rise above the whispers of your “we-don’t-sin Christian friends (and you stop doing it, too, in case you were a part of that group). Find some “here-comes-trouble Bible-reading sisters and brothers. You know what they say – trouble don’t last always, but “him and his boys are always waiting for you, just around the corner. After you make your way through these muddy waters, the baby will be born healthy and as cute as ever. You’ll look down into those beautiful brown eyes and see the faces of your loved ones who have gone on to glory. You’ll also see that expression – Grandma, you got me, right? LMBO. Get ready to love your grand like no other. Don’t be embarrassed. We all have neck bones in our closets. It’s just that some of us have gone vegetarian and forgot when we use to eat meat. Ready or Not, You're a Preacher Ever since I began this journey of mine, I have heard minister after minister talk about their and their church’s individual ministries. Many have put their mission statements before their congregations for a vote of approval and then a commitment in action and activities to be pursued. Some describe themselves as urban ministries, while others serve the homeless. Still others prioritize prison ministries, while others focus, depending on size and resources, on Christian education. Some are simple. Some are varied, if not complex. Maybe you’ve been told, like me, that everyone has a ministry. Where you see a need, you can probably find a calling. Some of you have even suggested that this column represents my ministry, even as I have tried to deny this. I have been known to start many a column with the caveat,”...even though I am not an
ordained minister.” It is my way of saying, ‘take what I say with a personal grain of salt.’ This drives many who read and support this work up a wall because they recognize when I don’t that perhaps this column does indeed minister to many. Maybe my rather public statements of faith could be interpreted as ministry. Their point always has been that ministering doesn’t necessarily only come from ministers. We all have an obligation to spread the Word, preach the gospel, proclaim Christ as Lord. In private moments of contemplation I’ve often wondered, what Jesus’ ministry was. I mean if you want to emulate someone’s ministry, it would be His. Aside from miracles and the like, it seems God came amongst us and simply served where needed. He taught (teacher). He communicated (motivational speaker). He converted (recruiter). He harvested

the fruits of His labor (salesman). Simple man, simple ministry… service, service, service. The point being, that we can all minister. The question is will you choose to? Will you accept the obvious role God has chosen for you? For the confused or the reluctant, this is an easy task. All one has to do is use the gift(s) God has blessed you with for His purposes rather than your own. I write and have made a conscious decision to write something for the Lord. What do you do as lawyer, accountant, cook, salesman, banker, day laborer, mother, father or mechanic, employed or not? Jesus proved you have no excuse because each gift has a spiritual
manifestation, if we choose to view it as ministry. “We have different gifts according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:6-8. Stop for a moment and take inventory of the many gifts God has blessed you with. Use them wisely or perish in worldly wealth and spiritual poverty. May God bless and keep you always.

Parkland expert warns acetaminophen hazards often overlooked DALLAS – It may be good for aches, pains and reducing fever, but according to experts at Parkland Health & Hospital System, acetaminophen – the active ingredient in hundreds of over-thecounter drugs – may not always be good for you. While it’s true that serious side effects from acetaminophen when used as directed are uncommon, if it’s ingested in high doses, over extended periods of time or in combination with other drugs, including alcohol, it can be harmful. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that from 1998 to 2003, acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States, with 48 percent acetaminophen-related cases associated with accidental overdose. The Centers for Disease Control estimated in 2007 that there were 1,600 cases of acute liver failure each year, most of PAGE 15

by acetaminophen may go unnoticed for some time.
“Most hepatologists (liver specialists) know that acetaminophen poisonings are a common and not so trivial part of our practice,” said William M. Lee, MD, internal medicine physician at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Lee conducted a groundbreaking study of patients at Parkland in 1997 that showed acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure. His subsequent research has consistently shown similar results.
Since hundreds of over-thecounter medicines contain acetaminophen, it could be easy to take too much if you’re taking more than one medication.
Acetaminophen product labeling until recently has not mentioned that the drug can cause liver damage, only that consumers should consult their doctor if they take the medicine and consume three or more alcoholic drinks.
“The problem is that acetaminophen has not been recognized as a poison,” Dr. Lee said. “And some people think that if some is good for you, more would be better. And that’s just not the case.” The main issue is acetaminophen’s effect on the liver, which processes the drug in the body. Too much acetaminophen overloads the liver’s ability to do its
Parents especially should be extra careful when giving acetaminophen to children. It’s important to administer the correct dosage for the age of the child. The FDA has said that liver damage most often occurs when someone consumes products at one time that exceed more than 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen within a 24-hour period – that equates to eight extra-strength tablets in a 24-hour period. Symptoms of liver damage include abnormally yellow skin and eyes, dark urine, light-colored stools, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. Since some of the symptoms are similar to flu, problems caused !
Dr. Lee urges consumers to read package labels closely, remembering that “APAP” is another name for acetaminophen. And to be on the safe side, he said people should not take more than 3 grams, or six extra-strength tablets per day. The FDA recommends that you talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you have any questions about acetaminophen. Library Acquires African-American Oral History Video Collection The HistoryMakers Archive Documents Black America's Legacy
Julieanna Richardson The Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, announced today the donation of a video archive of thousands of hours of interviewsThe HistoryMakers-that captures African-American life, history and culture as well as the struggles and achievements of the black experience. "The HistoryMakers archive provides invaluable first-person accounts of both well-known and unsung African-Americans, detailing their hopes, dreams and accomplishments-often in the face of adversity," said Billington. "This culturally important collection is a rich and diverse resource for scholars, teachers, students and documentarians seeking a more complete record of our nation's history and its people." "The HistoryMakers represents the single largest archival project of its kind since the Works Progress Administration's initiative to document the experiences of former slaves in the 1930s," said Julieanna Richardson, founder and executive director of The HistoryMakers. "This relationship with the Library of Congress represents a momentous occasion for our organization. With the Library of Congress serving as our permanent repository, we are assured of its preservation and safekeeping for generations to come." The collection includes 9,000 hours of content that includes 14,000 analog tapes, 3,000 DVDs, 6,000 born-digital files, 70,000 paper documents and digital files and more than 30,000 digital photographs. The HistoryMakers has provided the Library with digital files of all of the analog tapes. The collection comprises 2,600 videotaped interviews with AfricanPAGE 17

Americans in 39 states, averaging three to six hours in length. The videos are grouped by 15 different subject areas ranging from science, politics and the military to sports, music and entertainment. For example, the ScienceMakers category currently features 211 top black scientists-about six percent of the interviews-in the fields of chemistry, engineering, physics, biology, electronics, anthropology, aerospace, mathematics and genetics, among other scientific professions. The percentages of interviews for the other categories break down as follows: ArtMakers (7 percent), BusinessMakers (12 percent), CivicMakers (13 percent), EducationMakers (17 percent), EntertainmentMakers (3 percent), LawMakers (6 percent), MediaMakers (10 percent), MedicalMakers (4 percent), MilitaryMakers (3 percent), MusicMakers (6 percent), PoliticalMakers (7 percent), ReligionMakers (3 percent), SportsMakers (2 percent) and StyleMakers (1 percent).
"The collection is one of the most well-documented and organized audiovisual collections that the Library of Congress has ever acquired," said Mike Mashon, head of the Library's Moving Image Section. "It is also one of the first born-digital collections accepted into our nation's repository." Oral histories are continually being added to the growing archive. The oldest person interviewed was Louisiana Hines, who passed away in 2013 at 114. She was one of the iconic "Rosie the Riveter" workers during War World II. One of the youngest is a prima ballerina, Ayisha McMillan, who was 29 at the time of her interview. Some of the other lesser-known participants who have shared their life stories are: Arthur Burton, Sr.-one of the last surviving Pullman Porters who worked 20 days a month, averaging
two hours of sleep a night at half the pay of factory workers. Amazon Brooks-voted in her first election in 1920, the first year that women were granted the right to vote. Ann Cooper-President-elect Barack Obama noted that her life exemplified the struggle and hope of the American-American experience in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Junius Gaten-delivered ice on his horse to black activist Ida B. Wells and former black Congressman John Roy Lynch; survived the violent Chicago Race Riot of 1919; and knew Al Capone, Marcus Garvey and Carter G. Woodson. Judge William H. Murphy, Sr.the third black student ever enrolled at the University of Maryland Law School. Judge William Sylvester Whiteone of the first commissioned black officers in the Navy in 1944. Alonzo Pettie-the oldest living black cowboy. The collection boasts a long list of notables, including President Barack Obama when he was an Illinois state senator, General Colin Powell, child advocate Marion Wright Edelman, baseball legend Ernie Banks, entertainer/activist Harry Belafonte, poet/writer Maya Angelou, historian Lerone Bennett, Massachusetts Senator Edward Brooke, movie producer Reuben Cannon, historian John Hope Franklin, publisher Earl Graves, singer Isaac Hayes, Attorney General Eric Holder, musician B.B. King, poet Nikki Giovanni, actors Diahann Carroll, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, and I Messenger Publisher Cheryl Smith. Interview highlights include: Angela Davis on living in a white household in a black community: "I was living with a white family in Bedford Stuy, so I was living in a black community with a white family, going to school every day in Greenwich Village. ... I think I learned then how to live simultaneously in many different worlds without feeling out of place." !
Barack Obama on his earliest memories: "Lot of my memories have to do with sort of connecting up the struggle for African- American freedom with the struggle for freedom in Africa, and then with my father. I think all those things became connected in my mind, and I suspect had something to do with my interest then in public service and politics and civil-rights law subsequently." Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe on playing against Ty Cobb: "I played against Ty Cobb when he went to Cuba in '25. ... And he tried to steal second, I throwed him out both times. He quit. ... He didn't like coloreds. He was a racist." A Harvard-educated lawyer and TV producer, Richardson launched The HistoryMakers, a nonprofit research aneducational institution, in July 1999 with the goal of creating an archival collection of 5,000 video oral histories. She and her production team have traveled to more than 380 U.S. cities and towns, Norway and Mexico recording America's missing stories. In addition to its oral-history online archive, The HistoryMakers has produced educational programs, public events and the annual celebrity interview series-"An Evening With...,"-broadcast nationally on the Public Broadcasting System. Developed in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, The HistoryMakers Digital Archive has users in 51 countries across the globe from Afghanistan to Norway, Nigeria and China. The HistoryMakers collection is housed in the Library's Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation, a state-of-the-art facility located in Culpeper, Va. Home to nearly 7 million collection items, the Packard Campus is where the nation's library acquires, preserves and provides access to the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of films, television programs, radio broadcasts and sound recordings. The HistoryMakers is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit educational institution founded in 1999, committed to preserving, developing and providing easy access to an internationally recognized, archival collection of thousands of AfricanAmerican video oral histories. The HistoryMakers is the single largest archival collection of its kind in the world designed to promote and celebrate the successes and to document movements, events and organizations that are important to the African-American community and to American society. !

Injured women call on Texas Attorney General for investigation into pelvic mesh industry Austin, TX – Citing their personal health problems and the public costs incurred, Texas women who have been seriously injured by pelvic mesh implants requested that Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott investigate the pelvic mesh industry for its dangerous implants. “We call for Attorney General Greg Abbott to investigate the pelvic mesh industry for selling dangerous products to women throughout Texas. The damage this product has caused already has cost taxpayers too much money through Medicaid and other state public health systems,” stated Jane Akre, who has been organizing survivors of pelvic mesh implants for more than five years. In their letter to Attorney General Abbott, the women make the case that the pelvic mesh industry should be held accountable to the state treasury for funds spent for pelvic mesh-attributable costs to the Medicaid Program, the State Employee Retirement System, the State Employee Group Insurance Program, and charity care. “Across Texas, women are being hurt by the pelvic mesh industry, led by Johnson & Johnson and the company’s top executive, CEO Alex Gorsky,” added Akre. “Pelvic mesh implants are perhaps the most dangerous product to women’s health on the market today. Gorsky should immediately pull pelvic mesh off the market, and his delay in doing so is a slap in the face to women across Texas.” More than 70,000 separate lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers of pelvic mesh implants. Local survivors in Texas signed on to today’s request for an investigation. “It’s time for Attorney General Abbott to step in and help us,” stated survivor Debbie Mitchell of Dallas. “Many women have been permanently damaged by these faulty products which really have no place in the human body." According to the letter, the pelvic mesh industry, led by Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and its CEO Alex Gorsky, may be in criminal violation Texas Penal Code pursuant to Sec. 32.42 of the Deceptive Business Practices Act for the corporation’s knowledge of the inherent danger of the mesh implants as well as the destruction of documents about the products’ safety. Indicating that Johnson & Johnson knew how harmful pelvic mesh implants were, the corporation destroyed thousands of documents regarding the safety and efficacy of the implants. Although top company executives initially denied it, a magistrate judge found that Ethicon, a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson that manufactured the implants, destroyed documents pertaining to their effectiveness and safety as far back as 2007. Alex Gorsky, the current Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, was named head of Ethicon in 2008, before most of the documents were destroyed, and has continued to oversee it in his climb through the company’s ranks.

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas
By Patrice J. Holmes
editorial@dallasweekly.com
Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity
Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days
Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,
the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes
Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
