Message to the People... On this Friday morning, the birthdate of Emmett Till, my phones began ringing early. The conversations were about three Black men: President Barack Obama, Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price and Michael Phillips. It seems the Republican-based push continues, focusing on impeaching Mr. Obama; Mr. Price was taken into federal custody and later entered a plea of NOT GUILTY to bribery charges; and, Mr. Phillips was released from prison after 12 years served for rape. Some of the callers were deeply troubled and expressed concern Cheryl Smith about Mr. Price’s arrest. It seems, at least for DFW media and the callers, that story was the biggest news of the day. One person was optimistic, calling the case “weak.” Another cried hysterically, especially upon hearing that Mr. Price’s aide, Dapheny Fain, had also been taken into custody. While there were callers who clearly wanted my take on everything, many just wanted to see if I had heard the news. Initially I was unresponsive, asking questions to gauge reactions to a very emotional subject. Then I tried to divert the conversation to the other topics: namely Mr. Emmett Till Phillips, whose wrongful imprisonment story would have probably received President Obama more coverage on a slower news day. For some, the diversion worked as we talked about a crooked system that has wrongfully incarcerated so many Black men. Mr. Phillips did plead guilty to sexual assault, true, but he did so under the advice of his attorney. For others, the conversation drifted to a “racist Republican” party that continues to hammer away at President Obama. It’s tough for a Black man in America, one person told me when I mentioned 14Michael Phllips year-old Till, who allegedly whistled at a white woman in Money, Mississippi and was brutally murdered. Commissioner Price While a majority of folks expressed concern, there were those who called to gloat or share feedback about the commissioner. One African American said that folks criticized him because he was not a “JWP supporter” and thought Mr. Price was going to jail. He said he was told that he wished “he could be like John,” and he was jealous. I laughed when he said someone told him “Black men sounded like punks” celebrating Mr. Price’s troubles. One woman expressed outrage that Mr. Price was shackled when he appeared in court, while another said everything was orchestrated even down to having Latino representatives speaking for the government at the news conference to announce the charges against Mr. Price. “This is bullshit,” she screamed. An anglo male who has often told me about his dislike for the commissioner seemed to be excited about the news. “Well, it finally happened,” he said, as we had a lengthy discussion about his feelings. I cautioned him against celebrating another’s misfortune because we all will get our time. I think he expected a more spirited response from me. He did admit that Mr. Price seemed a bit smarter than the indictments allege. I told him to check out the rap group, Public Enemy. Now Emmett Till’s story has been told for decades and continues to surface as a reminder of a deviant society. Today, the story of Trayvon Martin joins the Till story as a warning for young Black men. Mr. Phillips, whose health is failing, lives with sickle cell anemia. District Attorney Craig Watkins shared words of encouragement and support and there were a number of other former inmates in attendance in Judge Gracie Lewis’ courtroom to see him become a free man. There’s still more to his story that will be shared in the future. The attempts to embarrass President Obama will continue and there are those that wish he would make some bold moves, especially in the interest of the masses that voted for him at such high numbers. “He’d better do something now while he is in office because he is sadly mistaken if he thinks that he can change racists. They have to change themselves and that is just not happening,” said one caller. Then there’s Commissioner Price, who once released from federal custody, returned to work at his office. He also said he does not plan to resign. Social media and news organization sites were abuzz with comments from all perspectives. Cecil Coleman I took a break from it all as I thought about another reason July 25 was a memorable day: on this day three years ago a family man, friend, entrepreneur and genuinely nice and caring person, Cecil Coleman, died after a relatively short but serious illness. Life is full of ups and downs. We have to constantly be on guard. We must! Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway (Dist. 4)

We should all allow the legal law enforcement, improving services without tax process to run its course before rushing to increases, completing the successful turnaround of Parkland judgment. My thoughts and prayers are with Hospital and promoting the $10.25 living wage; those issues, Commissioner Price today and in the days not an outside investigation will be the focus of ahead.” Commissioners Court and staff."

Everything Ain’t Copacetic Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent Hall is an award-winning columnist and author.
Back in the late 60s early 70s there used to be a saying. Not everybody used it just the cool people. It was just the hip folks, and the "in crowd.”

When everything was going well it was not uncommon to hear someone say "Everything is copacetic!”
Meantime, the family of Garner, 43, prepared for a funeral slated for Wednesday evening in Brooklyn at which the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist, was scheduled to speak.
Now I know my readership is diversified so let me review the definitions for copacetic. Copacetic means that everything is agreeable, alright, satisfactory, hunky-dory. It’s the cultural equivalent to this generation assuring each other by saying, “It's all good.” Truth is, it has never been all good, satisfactory, or hunky-dory. When it comes to Black men and our long history of problems with lawmen, it ain't never been copacetic. A story released this week by the news giant, USA Today, reminds us as much. “Members of Internet sites that allow law enforcement to air out issues are expressing outrage and offense over public reaction to last week's death of a New York City man after police administered a chokehold, which is against police department policy. Saying that Eric Garner was overweight at 350-400 pounds and battling asthma, many posters on the sites "TheeRant" and PoliceOne.com said the Staten Island father and husband brought his death last Thursday upon himself. They said his health contributed to his cardiac arrest, and that their interpretation of an eyewitness video of Garner's altercation with police last Thursday was that he resisted arrest. Police said they suspected Garner of selling untaxed PAGE 4

Police Commissioner William Bratton said during a briefing Tuesday that officers would receive training on the use of violence and that some of his investigators had spoken with the FBI. Bratton said he would not be surprised if the agency opened a civil rights investigation.”
Through the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, the US Congress mandated the Attorney General to collect data on the use of excessive force by police and to publish an annual report from the data. Two national systems collect data which include homicides committed by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. The National Center for Health Statistics maintains the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS)
which aggregates data from locally filed death certificates. Our demand should be that Attorney General Eric Holder will take the reins of this national epidemic and give our communities some relief. This death and the acknowledgment that training is needed does not leave us feeling like everything is copacetic. It sounds like another cop-out. No pun intended.
Training again?? This solution ain’t copacetic. If police departments across this nation have not digested the understanding that lethal force is not an acceptable first response to dealing with African American men, then maybe they just don’t want to learn. And that ain’t cool, that ain’t all good and it ain’t copacetic no matter what generation you claim. Garner was a former employee of the City of New York and a father of six children. The fact that any police officer in anonymity or in public would say that Garner brought on his own death is horrendous, heartless and the epitome of a haughtiness that one too many law enforcement officers adopt. Even if you look at it from a case law standpoint, the decision by the Supreme Court in Tennessee vs. Garner, (a different Garner) leaves you wondering if the outrageous number of AfricanAmerican men who have been murdered by police is ever really considered. !

Grant said “This health fair, for me, is in memory of my late mother, who died on Christmas Day in the year 2000, from complications of diabetes.” Grant further stated “I have pledged to spend the rest of my life teaching others what my family didn’t know about diabetes, and now with the loss of Dr. Kennedy, I have even more reason to promote a health agenda.” Health organizations confirmed includes Parkland Health & Hospital Systems, where Ronald Sessions will provide a special presentation on the topic “Good Health; cholesterol screening, diabetes testing (glucose) and blood pressure checking;” Mr. Sessions is the Senior Community Development Specialist at Parkland; Dr. Juanita Wallace, President of the Dallas NAACP will give a presentation on the increase of HIV/AIDS in the Dallas Metropolitan Area; Darlene Green, Founder and CEO of the Ina Mae Greene Foundation will be coming to share with the health fair participants on the value of getting out of toxic relationships that are violent! It could save your life. Janet Sigler, CEO of Guiltless Sweets will be there on behalf of the American Diabetes Association to share in a presentation on diabetes care and prevention; Sylvia Dunnavant, CEO of Celebrating Life, a breast cancer survivor will be there to help make women aware of the urgency of getting a mammogram and how it can save their lives. Dallas Fire & Emergency Medical Services Education Department will be there to teach fire safety and they will have health care hand-outs; give-a-way prizes plus more; others among those confirmed to attend; Patricia Davis, CEO of Advance Comfort will talk about how to better care for our seniors; especially those with Alzheimer’s disease. Women in the American Workforce By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson We are in new and exciting times for the progress of women in our society. Women sit at the helms of some of the most iconic companies, and lead our nation at the highest levels of government. The overwhelming favorite to win the 2016 presidential
election is a woman. However, there is so much that needs to be done to address the lack of equality for women in the workforce at all levels. Women are shattering the so-called “glass ceiling” in corporate America; yet there are still more meaningful corporate hurdles that confront them. A recently published study showed that only 60 percent of U.S firms had more than two women on their corporate executive committees, the entity that makes decisions for the board and
establishes company policy. The report, which has been cited in the Harvard Business Review, indicated that women comprise only 17-percent of the executive committees at the 100 biggest corporations in America. Two- thirds of women on executive committees come from departments such as human and public relations, the report stated. The issue of inequality for women in the American workforce is not limited to women in the upper levels of corporate America. Working women in the lower financial brackets are also faced with unequal pay and opportunity. Today, one in every five working mothers find themselves in low-paying jobs. In addition to paying the mortgage, rent, food and transportation, their incomes are battered by the high cost of childcare. Many women find themselves in employment environments that require long hours. For many, it becomes a vicious cycle. Giving more hours to the work environment takes away from quality time that women can devote to parenting. In our state, 30-percent of households are headed by women and 53-percent of all
households below the poverty level are headed by women, according the Dallas Women’s Foundation. The issue is complicated by the fact that in Texas, one in every four women, many of them heads of households, have no health insurance. An accident leads to absence from work which can lead to economic disaster for a family. Something must be done to improve the conditions that women face. Roslyn Thompson, President of the Dallas Women’s Foundation, rightly says that when our society invests in women, “there is a powerful ripple effect that benefits her family and the community. Simply put, increasing women’s economic security makes financially secure families and communities, and that makes for a stronger Texas economy.” As a society, we must do more to protect women and their families. Changes on the federal level must be accompanied by changes made by those that run corporations and small businesses. We must continue to fight for equal pay and equal opportunity for women. Our society will never reach its full potential if it neglects to provide equal opportunities for half of its citizens.

Phi Beta Sigma celebrates centennial
As it celebrated its centennial, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. presented a $500,000 Endowment to Howard University, the Institution where the venerable organization was founded 100 years ago.
This Endowment repreoents a historic funding agreement for an Organization of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.'s size. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. President Jonathan A. Mason has announced a $500,000 endowment to Howard University. President Mason made the presentation to Dr. Wayne A.I. Frederick, the newly appointed President of Howard University. This historic presentation represents Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.'s reflection on its glorious past and the enormous achievements it has attained to date. Howard University has been the beacon light from which all of the organization's amazing accomplishments have shined. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young AfricanAmerican male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as “a part of ” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence…without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”. From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”.
Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the Fraternity.

The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma are the Fraternity’s most valuable resource and strength. They are the primary means by which the Phi Beta Sigma objectives will be achieved. In order to accomplish the Fraternity’s objectives, it is essential that systems are instituted that effectively embody “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity” and promote brotherhood, scholarship and service. Eye Witness: A faster depletion of available water sources means severe drought In early February 2014, The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit for Somalia (FSNAU), and the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) estimated that 857,000 people remain in crisis and emergency status and would require urgent humanitarian assistance through June 2014.
FAO officials say substantial population displacement with sharp increases in cereal prices due to trade disruptions, in part by Southern Somalia following the government’s military offensive against insurgents in March, as well as largely late below normal Gu (April-June) rainfall in most parts of Somalia are among other factors worsening an already acute crisis.
An estimated 203,000 acutely malnourished children under age 5 will also require urgent treatment and nutrition support through mid 2014.

A severe water shortage is also expected in the coming months.
Rainfall data collected and analyzed by FAO’s Water and Land Information Management Unit (SWALIM) suggests that the Gu rains were erratic in nature starting late and ending early with very poor spatial distribution across this Horn of Africa nation. Most rainfall observing stations recorded less than 50 percent of normal rainfall during the season and water levels in the Juba and Shabelle regions are currently low.

The Back-to-School Brigade™ program is a nationwide campaign by Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree. Sorority Unveils Comprehensive and Unprecedented New Service Charlotte, N.C. - Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was installed as the 29th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for the 2014 - 2018. An impressive display of pomp and elegance marked the traditional swearing-in ceremony before thousands of the sorority’s membership from across the globe. The event was the culminating highlight of the organization’s weeklong 66th international convention, held from July 12 - July 18 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Buckhanan Wilson's primary duties will be to develop and implement an outstanding and far-reaching service program, to guide policy, and to set the overall tone and theme for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s membership. Under Buckhanan Wilson's dynamic leadership, the 2014 - 2018 International Program will focus on the theme, "Launching New Dimensions of Service," through which the sorority's 265,000 members and 986 local chapters will address community needs via programs in traditional and new target areas. The 2014 - 2018 International Program consists of five target areas, one signature program, and specifically targeted community service days. The sorority's signature program, ASCENDSM, is part of Target I: Educational Enrichment. ASCEND focuses on Achievement, SelfAwareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking, and Development Skills. Participants will include high school male and female students with emphasis on academic, life, career and character-building skills. The ultimate goal will be to motivate, engage and assist these students in reaching their maximum potential. The sorority will place additional emphasis on SMART careers (Science, Math, And Related Technologies). In keeping with an intense focus on promoting lifelong learning, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will provide substantial support to students through AKA One Million BackpacksSM. Through this initiative, the next four years will see members donating and distributing 1,000,000 backpacks and related school supplies to students worldwide. Support of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will be another priority, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority launches a national Think HBCUSM campaign to highlight HBCUs and the contribution of their graduates to the sorority and society. Under Target II: Health Promotion, Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue its strong health awareness focus through programs in three areas that disproportionately affect African PAGE 15

The Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver SupportSM program will expand Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s community outreach and assistance by generating awareness and support for Alzheimer’s programming and research. In addition, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will launch a major stroke prevention awareness campaign with special emphasis on hypertension management, diet and exercise. And finally, mental health and wellness efforts will be highlighted as sorority members work to bring attention to mental illness among diverse populations with historically low utilization of mental health services. Family Strengthening is Target III. The sorority will focus on childhood hunger awareness initiatives and address the increasing number of households that do not have financial resources to adequately clothe their family. Through the Family Seasonal WrapsSM program,
Alpha Kappa Alpha will spearhead a major effort to collect and donate hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters, and other items to families in need during the colder seasons. Lastly under this target, fiscal responsibility programs remain a key priority as Alpha Kappa Alpha members continue to offer financial management and home ownership programs to the communities that its chapters serve. Alpha Kappa Alpha will display its commitment to providing healthy and safe environments under Target IV: Environmental Ownership. Sorority members will restore and renew 1,908 existing community spaces and school playgrounds across the United States with their hard work and dedication to the AKA 1908 Playgrounds ProjectSM. Global Impact is Target V. Sorority members will implement the UNA/USA Global Classrooms Project to prepare today’s youth for an increasingly global
and complex society. Alpha Kappa Alpha members will work with high school students (ASCEND program) in partnership with the UNA-USA (United Nations Association) staff to expand understanding of the United Nations, its mission and focus. And the sorority will re-engage with a long-standing partner Africare - to launch youth-oriented programming on the continent of Africa. Another highlight of the Launching New Dimensions of Service program will be Community Service Days, when members will implement initiatives annually, on the same day, worldwide, to demonstrate Alpha Kappa Alpha's collective impact. To further aid in the organization’s ability to mobilize and collaborate across chapters and within their local communities, Buckhanan Wilson also introduced several operations, technology and communications initiatives including a $904,000 software grant from the Microsoft Corporation benefiting the organization’s Educational Advancement Foundation, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s chapters, and the local communities in which the organization serves. Born Again, Really? From time to time, I rethink or feel a little déjà vu regarding the subject of “born again,” particularly my own. I am reminded at times about how that phrase gets associated with everything but its biblical intent. It is my opinion and referencing my personal history that I suggest to you that I could not and certainly not willingly, fit into the category of a “born again Christian.” At the time I could not subscribe to what my definition of that meant. Today, a born again Christian is an enigma more closely associated with a holier-than-thou religious zealot with a rather conservative political agenda, as opposed to simply a true believer (my term).Then something happened on the way to the ranch and yep, I got saved. Then I began to understand those things about faith that would indicate a new me. Now, I can easily profess a clearer understanding of this born again

thing. Quite to my surprise, born again defines me pretty well, biblically speaking that is. “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh but spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying you must be born again.’” John 3:5-7. Rather than think born again is some kind of right wing conservative political movement, this passage lets us know that being born again relates to an awakening in each and every one of us to the real presence of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives. It just makes sense to me because you do begin see yourself as a new creature operating with a new lease on life (and it is a lease).
I defy anyone who comes this way not to see life itself from a new, renewed perspective. “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply from the heart. For you have been born again, not perishable seed, but imperishable (seed), through the living and enduring Word of God.” Peter 1: 22-23. My bible explains it to me this way. This imperishable seed, the seed of the Word of God, planted and accepted in a person’s soul, is eternal because God’s Word is eternal. By becoming good soil, by being spiritually involved in the whole process of your own salvation, a new eternal life is born.
Therefore, the life you live, once you’ve acknowledged your faith, is a new life given in the service of the Almighty, hence “born again.” Personally, my rebirth has been and continues to be, remarkable if, to nobody else but me. I cannot view myself as the same person I once was. Those who were around me then and are around me now might agree that there is a discernible difference. See me? See my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Talk to me, hear Him. Understand me? Understand my faith walk in the name of the Almighty. Believe me. I know I have a long ways to go. But I know I’m traveling these days in the right direction, one foot in front of the other; blessed in the knowledge of the truth, free in the hope of the same for you. May God bless and keep you always…

Melodie Calvert - Lost 70 pounds in less than a year, dropped her cholesterol medication and cut her high blood pressure medication in half. Melodie rides her bike to work seven miles every day and has completed several 5 and10K runs. "When I first joined the group, it was so encouraging to be around people who did not know me, but showed they cared about me," said Calvert. "They taught me what was good for my body." Christina Davis - Went from size 20 to size 6 in less than a year. She attributes her success to the Fit and Faithful Living prayer-powered fitness meetings and Facebook-page community support. Christina works out every day with her 4-year-old daughter who has spina bifida. "It is great to know that I am not struggling alone," said Christina Davis. "Fit and Faithful Living Eric Dickerson provided me knowledge, encouragement, and empowerment to change my lifestyle." Other Fit and Faithful Living Expo speakers include: DFW area radio personality Dr. Jill Waggoner, who will speak on the right way to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Fit and Faithful Living was started by LaChanda Dupard as a way for people to combine a healthy lifestyle and faith-based living. FFL provides fitness events and workshops to help people fight obesity. Dupard started a fitness regimen and changed her unhealthy eating habits to decrease her medical-history health risks such as high blood pressure, lupus, arthritis and high cholesterol. Her husband Reggie Dupard, a retired NFL player, was able to reduce his blood pressure and cholesterol numbers after he got involved with the FFL program. "People get overwhelmed and don't know how to start on the road to a healthy lifestyle," LaChanda Dupard explained. "Through Fit and Faithful Living we support people as they learn to eat right and do right for overall health."
