Message to the People... Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease She was the hit of the convention center as fans lined up to take photos, buy books and share their favorite Good Times moments from the popular Cheryl Smith television show featuring a family full of strife, ups and downs, and yes, good times. Bern Nadette Stanis, or as she is more affectionately known as “Thelma,” -- the daughter of James and Florida Evans, was the dream girlfriend for many young men growing up in the early 1970s. She and her brothers, JJ and Michael lived in the projects with their parents where despite their socioeconomic status, a sense of honor, respect and family values reigned supreme in their modest household. Since her days on the screen Ms. Stanis has also written books, acted in movies and on stage, and she’s a painter and dancer. And if that isn’t enough, she also has become a strong advocate, focusing on Alzheimer’s Disease, of which she has her own story to tell as she watched her mother’s battle against this neurodegenerative disease that “causes tangles and plaques to develop in the brain and destroys the brain's neurons.” Essentially the disease causes accelerated memory loss While this disease occurs primarily in persons over the age of 65; there are more and more cases where the patient is considerably younger. The Good Times Family! Recently I visited with an old friend, someone I have known for almost 35 years, and in her mid 40s she began battling the disease. Startling, I know. Ms Stanis’ mother is living with Alzheimer’s Disease. It was after Ms. Stanis began to observe changes in her mother, like forgetfulness, her hair untidy and clothes not “put together well,” that a decision was made to have mom move in. Ms. Stanis became the primary caregiver to her “best friend,” and began to understand more about this debilitating disease that often leads to death. She talks lovingly about her mother and how this extreme form of dementia is very challenging and she is committed to sharing information through her public appearances and speaking engagements As we discussed the many changes that occur in the lives of Alzheimer’s patients, I mentioned how Links Inc. has made Alzheimer’s Disease a major focus for the organization. Ms. Stanis’ enthusiasm and awareness about issues facing Alzheimer’s sufferers and caregivers, as well as her passionate and informative presentations make her a natural to participate with their programs. There are so many ills that disproportionately effect people of African descent. Therefore, it is imperative that the dissemination of information becomes more progressive and proactive. So it was more than appropriate that Ms. Stanis appeared at the National Association of Black Journalists annual convention. Several journalists visited with her about the topic and hopefully some great stories will hit the airwaves, publications and internet. While there is no cure for the disease, there are ways to help sufferers and caregivers as they deal with the many challenges and obstacles that they will surely face as they go through each stage. To date, those stages are mild, moderate and severe. While some may think of the disease as just affecting the memory; it is important to note that memory is a significant part of the disease’s effect. But, during the severe stage, the disease evolves to a point where your brain may no longer be able to tell your body what to do -- causing your body to shut down. With more research, there is more information to share. Research takes money and that’s why it is imperative to support efforts like Ms. Stanis and the Links. You never know when and what you might need and it is better to have and don’t need than to need and don’t have. Cheryl !

It didn't stop. There were calls from the indigent to the middle class of all races for whom John had been a Godsend. There were calls from people for whom John had visited in hospitals and funeral parlors, and churches, and schools, and the list goes on. Most were upset that his arrest had to include handcuﬀs and shackles. But I must say that the FBI paid him the ultimate respect in making sure that their first press conference did not appear allWhite. You may not have noticed it but that was a strategic move to make sure that this city did not erupt. Ironically some of our Hispanic brothers and sisters, (part of the other maligned minority that John has always fought for), surrounded the podium. Ironically, Price can rightfully claim some credit for Hispanics, who have risen in power, politically and professionally. John fights for Justice, and not just us! There is going to be a trial sooner or later. This case will cost no less than a few hundred thousand dollars.

Contrary to popular belief John is by no means wealthy, and is legally hamstrung by his inability to sell his own property. But he’s still smiling and working and committed. I didn’t want to write this story, but since I'm here let me make it worth something. I want three distinct things to happen among John supporters. First and foremost I want you to pray. I want John's name permanently placed on every prayer list of every congregation that believes in him from this moment forward. Secondly, I want for this community to help finance part of his defense. If you do not believe he deserves your help; don't give. But if you do believe in him put your money where your mouth is. Thirdly, get some damn pride. Read between the lines. Take it personal. There ought to be some things that happen to us as a people that you won’t stand for. When they arrested that arrogant Negro named John Wiley and sent the message viral, they were painting a picture; it was a caveat!! Some of us get the picture; did you?

Commissioner Price and Dr. Cornel West From the moment the news was made public, calls, text, tweets, and all manner of prayers commenced. John Wiley Price has been the cash cow of the local media for at least 30 years. But the news of his arrest by FBI agents was the media’s biggest yield yet. “Our Man Downtown” was suddenly “Their Man Downtown” in handcuﬀs and shackles. And for me, who counts him as best friend, godfather of my children, and an excellent role model; it was a painful portrait. The publisher of this journal asked me to journalize as a personal, up close and ride or die partner with the most enormous and intriguing figure in Dallas’ history. JWP is known as the most polarizing figure in Dallas, but they never admit that Dallas is the most racially polarized city in this nation. PAGE 4

The FBI’s net was finally filled. First I got a text of encouragement from a White brother who has been a union executive in this city for 40 years. Next I got a call from another White brother who had been active as a “Warrior” during the 15 years that we picketed every major institution in Dallas. Within 20 minutes I received a barrage of calls letting me know that John had been “apprehended.” You would have thought he was a Columbian kingpin or drug lord. By noon the connective tissue that still exists in the Black community in Dallas and across this nation was in full reflex. There were calls from Dr. Cornell West, Dr. Julianne Malveaux and Dr. Michael Eric Dyson. Reverends Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and most of the local social justice ministers relayed their dismay and concern. !

U.S. Court of Appeals ruling hurts Texans By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson When President Barack Obama introduced the Patient Protection and Aﬀordable Care Act, he and Congress intended for every eligible American to gain access to aﬀordable health insurance coverage. On Tuesday, July 22, the District of Columbia Circuit Federal Appeals Court limited a provision that allows Americans to use tax credits to pay for health insurance. The ruling stated that those receiving health insurance through federally-facilitated exchanges are not able to use tax credits, but those in staterun marketplaces are able to use tax credits. Since Texas opposed the healthcare reform law, denying Medicaid expansion and refusing to run its own insurance marketplace, our state is

among 36 in the nation that have a federallyfacilitated insurance exchange, meaning that residents of those states cannot receive subsidies under this ruling. Opponents of the law argue that Congress intended for subsidies to only go to people in states that established their own insurance marketplaces, and that the subsidies were meant to entice states to embrace the law and run their own marketplaces. Unfortunately, government oﬃcials in Texas did not embrace the law and resisted establishing a Texas marketplace. This misstep has now threatened millions of Texans’ ability to purchase aﬀordable healthcare coverage. Complicating the matter, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, VA, rendered an opposite ruling two hours later on the same day. The three-judge panel unanimously decided that the law does not specify whether the subsidies should be available in states that decided not to run their own marketplaces and

that the tax credits are essential in fulfilling the law’s primary goals. Without subsidies, health insurance will be out of reach for millions who rely on the Affordable Care Act for health insurance coverage. In Texas, 82 percent of the approximately 300,000 residents enrolled in the federally-facilitated exchanges are currently receiving subsidies to help pay for their coverage. Unfortunately, there are still more than 6 million uninsured residents in our state who could have benefitted from Medicaid expansion, and will only suffer more if the DC federal appeals court ruling is upheld by a higher court. The conflicting rulings will likely force another Supreme Court battle when justices convene next year. Until then, neither ruling will have an immediate effect on consumers. While we wait for a final decision, hardworking Americans will continue to receive subsidies to help pay for health insurance. I will continue to push for fairness and for affordable health insurance for my constituents and all Americans.

Clinical Trials Can Be Life Savers

So, take your time, read about the study, understand how it will work, the background of the study team and site and what participation will involve.

If you’re experiencing a serious medical condition and the treatments you’re getting aren’t helping, ask your health provider whether a clinical trial might oﬀer a more eﬀective means to manage or even cure the problem at hand.

Ask a lot of questions. It can be a very rewarding experience but it’s important to be sure it’s the right experience for you.”

Participating in a clinical trial may give you an opportunity to take advantage of new medicines before they’re approved for sale to the general public. What are Clinical Trials and Why is the Public Allowed to Participate? Clinical trials are designed to give researchers, clinicians, and the FDA (the agency that must approve all medical treatments before they’re made available to the public) critical information about the safety of a prospective new drug, or valuable insight into how to use an older medication in a new way to produce safer, more-eﬀective treatments. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of confusion out there about what clinical trials actually are. Some people hear those words and imagine that they’ll be subjected to dangerous medical experiments. Others hear the same words and imagine a magical cure: show up at a lab somewhere, pop some new pills, and come out disease-free. Neither is correct. Clinical trials are constantly and carefully monitored by the FDA to ensure the safety of every volunteer. Out of every 5,000-10,000 drugs pharmaceutical companies discover, only five ever make it to the clinical trial stage—the point at which the FDA feels they’re safe enough to use on human volunteers; the rest are discarded long before. Of those five, only one will ever be approved. Clearly, no medieval experimenting going on here. On the other hand, clinical trials are not appropriate for every person or in every circumstance. Volunteers are carefully screened to ensure that they have the disease that’s being studied and that they don’t have any other conditions that might confuse the results or interfere with the way the new drug works. For example, a clinical trial for a new prostate cancer drug would, of course, recruit volunteers who have prostate cancer. But they might exclude volunteers who also have some PAGE 9

other health problem that could make it hard to determine whether the new drug worked properly or not. (In certain instances, someone who doesn’t qualify for a clinical trial but whose condition is life-threatening, may still be eligible to participate under what’s called a Compassionate Use Program.). In addition, the volunteer will be carefully monitored to determine whether there are any unpleasant or unforeseen side-eﬀects or the experimental drug is not helping at all. So could a clinical trial be useful for you? If you think so, start by talking with the health provider who’s treating you right now. Odds are, he or she knows—or can help you find—a scientist, physician, university, or local clinical research center that’s doing cutting-edge research into your condition and may be conducting trials that you might be a candidate for. In addition, the National Institute of Health has an excellent online database www.ClinicalTrials.gov that you can search to find appropriate trials. Unfortunately, using that database requires quite a bit of skill (more than many medical practitioners have), so it’s worth making contact with a reputable patient advocacy group such as Men’s Health Network ( www.menshealthnetwork.org ) that can help you navigate those murky waters. Once you’ve found a clinical trial that sounds promising, your work isn’t over. Gather as much information as you can from your provider, the people conducting the trial, and patient advocacy organizations about all of the potential benefits and risks. Then start asking questions. Lots of them. “Participation in a clinical trial is an important decision and you need to do your homework,” advises Cathryn Clary, MD, Head of US Medical and Chief Scientific Oﬃcer of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. “The good news is that there is a lot of information available and you should take advantage of it all to make the most informed decision.

Ultimately, of course, the decision is yours alone. And you’ll be asked to sign an Informed Consent document stating essentially that you’ve had a chance to ask questions and that you’re walking into the trial with your eyes wide open. The Bottom Line For many boys and men who are not getting better with currently available medications, a clinical trial may be a viable option. There’s a lot more to understanding the clinical trials process than could be summarized in this brief article. We urge you to familiarize yourself with the process, laws, rights of sponsoring organizations and of patients, and any other relevant information you’ll need to make a truly informed, intelligent decision. But don’t do it alone. Talk with your family, your health provider, and a patient advocacy group. Yes, this is about you getting better and managing your condition. However, it’s also about helping society understand new and important treatments. Apart While Being Together Dear Alma, My husband and I have been married for over 25 years. We’re both in our late 50s. On the outside looking in, we’re a church going happy couple, but the reality is, we’re not. No, we don’t argue or disrespect each other, but we just don’t talk much. He falls asleep in the basement most nights and I’m sleeping alone. We don’t go out on romantic dates and he never wants to try anything new. We just exist almost like roommates. And I’m sure he would be fine with this for the rest of his life. I love my husband very much and I don’t want my marriage to end. I have been seeing an old boyfriend lately who has moved back to our town. He and I have not missed a beat. We’re like two teenagers sneaking around and, needless to say, everything is hot and heavy. I know I should cut it oﬀ before my

husband finds out, but I enjoy the attention. I talked to my husband the other night and told him how unhappy I was and he said he’ll do better. He hasn’t returned to our bedroom, so I’m not sure what’s going on. I just don’t know what to do.
