He was just 21. Some would say he was just beginning to live-- that despite what he had done in his past, he had so many years ahead of him, to prove himself, and to the world that he was, indeed a man. Any hopes of such a reality were snuffed out on July 28 in Jonesboro, Arkansas when Chavis Carter “allegedly” committed suicide. He wouldn’t be the first Black male to commit suicide and he won’t be the last. He is also not the first Black male to die under suspicious circumstances and unfortunately he probably won’t be the last. The more and more I read about Mr. Carter’s case, Cheryl Smith the more puzzled, confused and then downright stupid I feel. The numbers just don’t add up and the facts (as provided in reports) make it impossible for me to believe the hype. It appears that Mr. Carter, and two young men were stopped in a truck in Jonesboro, Arkansas. During this routine stop, the two white males were sent on their way after being told that Mr. Carter had a warrant in his home state of Mississippi. Mr. Carter, was frisked twice, however, and according to some police officers who I know and respect, it is highly possible that a gun could have been missed during the first search and he could have stashed the gun that was later used to take his life. But they had questions too, as information about the case continues to be revealed. The Jonesboro Police department released a video with officers fitting Mr. Carter’s description reenacting the shooting. That same video was viewed by the pathologist who performed the autopsy and issued his ruling of “suicide.” The ruling also pointed out that n addition to marijuana, Mr. Carter had oxycodone and methamphetamine in his blood. Could those drugs have contributed to his state of mind? According to the report from the crime lab, Mr. Carter"was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head.” Okay, anything is possible! There are quite a few questions folks are asking: • Since there were no other suspects to be concerned about and no vehicle to wait for a tow truck, what were the officers doing while Mr. Carter maneuvered around in the back seat of the car to retrieve this gun and the shoot himself? • Where did the Cobra .380 handgun come from? • Why wasn’t Mr. Carter tested for gunshot residue even after police department asked for the test? •Did Mr. Carter tell his girlfriend that he had a gun “with” or “on” him? •Why does police footage appear to stop and start? •Why did Mr. Carter call his girlfriend and tell her he was scared? •Did the arresting officers know that Mr. Carter was left-handed, but his right hand was used to pull the trigger? Oh, there are so many more questions and while Officers Keith Baggett and Ron Marsh remain on administrative leave, more and more questions are surfacing. Along with those questions are reports about Mr. Carter. Sadly there are some very disturbing videos and reports, including one of him smoking marijuana with clearly underaged youth. Clearly he was dong things that were leading him to trouble, imprisonment or an early grave. There are also very unflattering photos on Facebook. Still, whatever information is being revealed now, was not known to the arresting officers and has no bearing on whether he was murdered or decided to take his own life. The Rev. Jesse Jackson and others have asked for further investigation and they are right in doing so. There’s so much more information than even the little I have revealed here. We don’t want a rush to judgment or any character assassinations. Justice is the ultimate goal!

Several protest Selma monument for KKK leader Selma, AL (BlackNews.com) -- Hank Sanders, Alabama State Senator representing Selma and Dallas County and eight other West Alabama counties, is challenging the building of a Monument to General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Sanders comments, "Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the richest slave dealers in the South. Under General Nathan Bedford Forrest leadership, black soldiers who had surrendered were murdered in cold blood at Fort Pillow, Tennessee during the Civil War." After the Civil War, General Forrest took leadership of the Klan becoming its first Grand Wizard and built it into a national force that terrorized Black people across this country for decades. There is already a monument to Forrest at Live Oak Cemetery. We do not need a bigger monument of Forrest in Selma, the symbol for voting rights and freedom all over the world." " We h a v e w o r k e d t o eliminate memorials and anything else that honors Nathan Bedford Forrest including changing the name of an almost entirely black housing project just outside of town named for decades NBF Homes that stood for Nathan Bedford Forrest. We successfully renamed the housing project to MBA Homes in honor of Minnie B. Anderson," Sanders said. He continued, "In the year 2000, we successful fought to remove a Forrest monument from a public building, the Smitherman Building. It was at that time, that the monument was relocated to the Live Oak Cemetery. We were not pleased then and continue to be displeased now that a memorial that honors a slave trader and a murderer of Black people is present in our town." Sanders also protested a document on the monument
which called his wife, Faya Rose To u r e ; a "Domestic Te r r o r i s t . " N o public property should be used to defame anyone, said Sanders. "A terrorist is a criminal. It is a sad day when a person who protest a terrorist like Nathan Bedford Forrest is called a "domestic terrorist" and it’s posted on public property." Sanders also spoke out against the physical assault on his wife, Faya Rose Toure. "The supervisor of the construction project grabbed and pushed my wife. He then put his finger in her face. I will not stand for anyone assaulting any one. I certainly will not stand for anyone assaulting my wife or any member of my family. This supervisor of the Nathan Bedford Forrest Monument must face justice." The Friends of Forrest, a Confederate organization and co-founded by Cecil Williamson and Patricia Godwin are behind the building of the monument. "They [Friends of Forrest] have been raising money for years for a permanent monument to Forrest by selling a packet of information that was originally published by the KKK right after the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march. They call the packet, Truth Uncensored and it attacks the Voting Rights Movement." Among several articles in the packet are booklets called, Sex and the Civil Rights Movement - The True Selma Story, that falsely claims the Selma to Montgomery march was a drunken orgy; and Nightriders, The Truth

We are still struggling with this issue today. This matter has gone way too far. We must take a stand. That’s why I am speaking out now. That’s why others must speak out." Romney’s agenda: Class warfare By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
Raise taxes on the rich? “Class warfare” the Republicans rail. Any discussion of inequality, says Mitt Romney, should be held privately “in quiet rooms.” Yet the Romney agenda for the country opens a new offensive in class warfare — only on the side of the few, not the many. America’s inequality has already reached extremes not seen since 1929 before the Great Depression. In 2010, the richest 1 percent captured an obscene 93 percent of the nation’s income growth. The top 1 percent now has as much wealth as 90 percent of Americans. As Warren Buffett, one of America’s richest men, told New York Times columnist Ben Stein: “There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning.” Romney and Republicans demand extension of the extra Bush tax cuts that go to those earning more than $250,000 a year. In addition, Romney calls for slashing individual tax rates across the board by 20 percent, eliminating the estate tax that applies only to the multimillionaires and sustaining the concessionary 15 percent tax rate on capital gains income overwhelmingly pocketed by the wealthiest Americans. He promises to pay for these tax cuts by closing “loopholes,” but refuses to identify them. But even with the most generous assumptions, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center — a joint venture of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution — found that the rich don’t collect enough in loopholes to pay for the proposed tax cuts. Romney’s tax plan would end with the richest Americans getting a tax cut while most Americans end up paying more. Class warfare straight up. On spending, Romney claims that he can cut federal spending while increasing spending on the military and putting off his (poisonous) plans for Medicare and Social Security for a decade (so that those 55 and over won’t vote against him). But neither Romney nor running mate Paul Ryan will reveal what they would cut. Ryan’s budget calls for devastating cuts in Medicaid and food stamps. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that more than three-fifths of the Ryan cuts in the first decade come from programs for the poor. Class warfare again. Add to this the Romney “Bain Capital” economic policy. Romney criticizes Obama for not signing more corporate trade treaties, despite the fact that our trade policies not only ship jobs abroad but rack up more than $1 billion a day in trade deficits, more than half to China. (To be fair, Romney pledges to certify China as a currency violator, but every candidate promises to get tough with China, then folds once in office). Romney also wants to repeal even the modest reforms of Wall Street that Obama got through Congress. He opposes raising the minimum wage and echoes Republican scorn of worker rights and unions. But the decline of unions has contributed to an economy in which workers no longer gain a fair share of the increased productivity and profits that they help to create. Once more, class warfare on the side of the CEOs and against working families. Increasingly a Southern-based “whites only” dominated party, Republicans wrap their class warfare into scorn for “those people”: poor people of color. Can they consolidate support among white blue-collar workers, even as their policies attack those workers? Divide and conquer is an ancient strategy in warfare and in politics. Will it work for Mitt Romney, so clearly a man of, by and for the 1 percent? We’ll know in November.
PA Voter ID ruling a slap in the face to democracy Florida's former Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer appeared on my TV show, Politics Nation on MSNBC, and candidly discussed how the GOP in his state systematically pushed for harsh new voter ID laws in order to suppress the vote -- specifically that of African Americans and young people. Blowing the lid off of insider meetings, Greer said his party gave up on courting minority voters and instead began seeking methods to disenfranchise and purge as many of them from participating as possible. He confirmed what some of us have long argued, and he provided a backdrop into what is transpiring all across the country in advance of the upcoming presidential election. Well today, in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, a judge ruled in favor of upholding the draconian Republican-supported voter ID law. This outrageous ruling is a slap in the face to democracy, and a slap in the face to all those who sacrificed so dearly in order to secure our liberties. In what can only be described as a shocking and appalling ruling, Commonwealth Judge Robert Simpson has sided with those who would seek to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of otherwise eligible voters just a few months before Election Day. While Simpson said he was disturbed by statements made by Pennsylvania state House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (who openly said voter ID laws would allow Gov. Romney to win Pennsylvania), he believed that state officials would be able to enforce these laws in a "nonpartisan, even-handed manner." But when the entire premise of a law is partisan to begin with, the idea of fairness is preposterous and insulting at best. The Pennsylvania Transportation Department estimates that approximately 9 perent of registered voters -- or 750,000 people -- lack state-issued photo IDs in the state and
Rev. Al Sharpton President National Action Network will not be able to cast a ballot this November. And it should come as no surprise that a majority of these folks are the poor, the elderly, people of color, the disabled and young folks. In other words, they represent a massive voting block of the Democratic Party and came out in unprecedented numbers for the 2008 election. Judge Simpson, a Republican, stated that he was 'skeptical' of the 9 percent figure and that opponents of these voter ID laws failed to make a case of voter suppression. But what Simpson should have focused on instead was the inability of proponents of these laws to prove that voter fraud exists in the first place. Once again unable to provide valid proof that voter fraud is an actual threat, these Republican lawmakers have argued a solution looking for a problem. And the truly unfortunate part is that they have thus far succeeded in the state of Pennsylvania. For the past few weeks, I have traveled to key areas like Ohio, Georgia, Alabama and Florida as part of my Voter Engagement Tour. Because these new voter ID laws range from an elimination of early/ absentee voting to new photo ID requirements and more, citizens must be educated as to what tactics are in play in their respective state. They then must organize to get as many
voters the appropriate IDs or other documents in order to counteract the repressive measures that will impact them this election. My organization, National Action Network, and I will now be sure to visit Pennsylvania in the immediate future. We will rally folks, and assist churches and civil rights groups with getting their congregants/members registered and helping them to obtain photo IDs. While there may be time for people to appeal Judge Simpson's ruling, we will not take the chance. Many of those impacted by these laws cannot afford to take time off from work or cannot make it to a state agency that can administer the IDs. Many are elderly who may not even possess a birth certificate, let alone a vehicle to get to the polls. And many just need clarity as to what will now be required. We will do our part to prepare people as much as possible, and get as many eligible souls to the polls, but all of us need to take action. Today's unfortunate ruling is a clear upholding of voter suppression, but it is not the first time we've witnessed systematic methods of blocking the vote in this nation. It was a broad coalition of activists, religious leaders, lawmakers and citizens from diverse backgrounds that fought disenfranchisement in the past. During that time, some even gave their lives. If we've survived church bombings, brute force and more, we should at least be able to empower and assist the less fortunate among us to combat those who simply cannot win based on their own Party's platform alone. We must take action; no excuses. The ones who are attempting to block us aren't hesitating, and neither should we. Rev. An African experience It was an opportunity to hear about how one woman has had a successful career while also reaching back to help others. Recently at the invitation of Tx State Representative Helen Giddings, a group of businesswomen, educators and community volunteers gathered in the library at the African American Museum, to meet South African entrepreneur and humanitarian, Lorato Phalatse. Members of the Links Inc., and The Summit listened intently as she explained how after college she entered the business world, holding key positions before

assuming a high profile position in President Mbeki’s cabinet. Lorato, who is the Chief Executive of Nozala Investments, was visiting Dallas while on her way to enroll her son into college in Wichita Falls, TX. A huge proponent of education, she shared how education was an important part of her life. She also talked about the significance of Black women helping one another once they achieve success in an area. “One of the biggest challenges is when we as Black women make it, we really battle to help other Black women get in,” she said.

“We actually keep them (Black women) out.” Fortunately when she was entering the business world, there were people who reached out to help her, she acknowledged. She also shared information about a program she is involved with that helps women in rural areas of South Africa.

Web site educates small and minority business owners on how to obtain small business credit Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- A recent Washington Post article emphasized how poor credit makes it much tougher to secure loans and gain access to credit, especially
for African-Americans. The article entitled, "For Black Americans, Financial Damage From Subprime Implosion is Likely to Last" (see link below), sheds light on what
has been an ongoing problem for many decades: Minorities, particularly African Americans, continue to make up a huge population of people and business owners who are unqualified for credit. Other articles from TheGriot.com and The Black American News Network (TBANN) share the same devastating news, but one new web site aims to make a change. Launched in 2011, BusinessCredit.org is a free online resource that features the best tips and guidelines on how to obtain and build small business credit that is, business loans, business credit cards, and business lines of credit. Visitors are also educated about business credit reports. The web
site is available to help anyone regardless of their ethnic background, but it aims to especially reach African Americans and other minorities who are most in need. Visitors to the site will learn exactly what to do and what to avoid when applying for new credit, and how to effectively plead a case when credit is being taken away. There is no other resource online like this, and most of all it's 100% free to use.The site features well-written informative articles, descriptive how-to videos, exclusive listings of useful resources, and detailed comparison charts of options offered by different banks. It also features the latest news and trends pertaining to small business funding and credit.

Medical Center of Dallas they ever had. She accepted Christ at an early age, where she became an active member at Full Gospel Tabernacle NTC. Inc., and she served faithfully on the usher board.
Phyllis Diller July 17, 1917 - August 20, 2012 Comedian, actress and author Phyllis Diller was born as Phyllis Ada Driver on July 17, 1917, in Lima, Ohio. Diller was the only child of Frances and Perry Driver.
After graduating high school, she continued her studies at Chicago's Sherwood Music Conservatory for three years, before eloping with Sherwood Diller in 1939. The couple soon moved to California, where they had six children In 1955, while working as a journalist for the San Leandro NewsObserver, Ms. Diller appeared as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game s h o w, Yo u B e t Yo u r L i f e . H e r memorable performance on the show sparked the advent of her national exposure. She received an offer to make her comedic debut at The Purple Onion Comedy Club in San Francisco, where she floored the audience with her dynamic one-liners and comical costumes.

PCC introduces Clergy Leadership and Executive Coaching Sessions A New Tool for Enhancing Ministry
Unconditional is a stirring film that will touch audiences and challenge them to consider what is most important in their own lives. The movie’s heartfelt themes include reconciliation, second chances, forgiveness, sacrifice and the true meaning of unconditional love. Modeled after the real-life of “Papa” Joe, Unconditional serves not only to entertain but also inspire moviegoers to serve in areas of need just like Joe Bradford. “My dream is that Unconditional inspires cities to unite in love to rescue one of our most precious commodities: thousands of at-risk and fatherless children torn by poverty and oppression,” said Bradford. The ACT campaign encourages moviegoers to serve alongside scores of nonprofit organizations and ministries in their community. Pastoral Counseling Center (PCC) is offering leadership coaching sessions to support pastors in their roles as leaders and managers within their congregations. These one-on-one sessions will be conducted by Bill Johnson, a seasoned executive coach and management consultant.
