Message to the People... To have a friend, you have to be one!

Cheryl Smith

Miles Jaye on Ferguson, MO 5

Friends How many of us have them? Friends Ones we can depend on Friends How many of us have them? Friends Now you can look the word up, again and again But the dictionary doesn't know the meaning of friends

Robin Roberts and MBAs 12

Whodini For good times and bad times I'll be on your side forever more That's what friends are for Dionne Warwick The older you get, the more you will come to cherish friendships. Sure we will meet folks and call them “friends” and some will leave out of our lives; never to return again. Those are the people who are in your life for a season instead of a lifetime. I am fortunate, however, that since I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I will always have friends.

Monday Night Politics 18

I am also fortunate to have several non-Deltas in my life who are just as loving, supportive, candid and fun-loving. I count LaWonda among those young ladies and men who continue to be a source of inspiration and support in my life. We have worked together on projects and committees, serving on the UNCF Leadership Council and other non-profits. Initially I was drawn to her because of her sincerity, impeccable work ethic, love of HBCUs, and beautiful personality, among other characteristics.

Get On Up!!! Quit Playin’ By Vincent Hall Vincent Hall is an award-winning columnist and author.

When I first saw the trailer for the new biopic; “Get on Up” a story of the life of James Brown, I broke out in a “Cold Sweat.” I knew that I would leave the cinema in song. I left there fist raised singing “Say it Loud, I'm Black and I’m Proud.” James Brown is Soul and he was “Super Bad.” “Please, Please, Please”. Go see the movie and get there as soon as you can. “I got that feelin’” that you are going to love it. You don’t trust me though, so here is what the “other” major critic have said. The Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan says Chadwick Boseman delivers "a star performance … that's little short of heroic" in "a disjointed film that suffers from having a more ambitious plan than it's got the ability to execute." He adds, "It's a mark of how galvanizing a star Boseman is that his moment-to-moment performance, the energy and intelligence he brings to his work as a man who ran roughshod over adversity ('I take it and I flip it,' he says. I go PAGE 4

!

forward'), convinces you despite all the obstacles the film's structure places in his way." The Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern writes that Boseman "fills Brown's shoes with a dynamism that transcends imitation." Morgenstern also says that while Boseman was "hugely appealing" in the Jackie Robinson biopic "42" last year, "nothing in that portrayal could

have predicted the brilliance of this one. It's a transformation that evokes Brown's gyrating body and furiously tortured soul." Ty Burr of the Boston Globe says Boseman "has the moves down," and although he lip-synchs to Brown's vocals

(wisely, Burr says), the actor "inhabits the singer totally.… The two men look nothing alike, yet Boseman convinces in the spring of the walk, the confident slur of the talk, and, above all, the sweat — the discipline, effort, and joy — he puts into every waking moment." But you came here to see what I thought so here it is. “Get on up” details how James Brown parlayed a seventh grade education into enough income to purchase of a private plane in the 1970’s. For sure, there are plenty of plunders and plights that plagued his life. But the key is that he endured and that is such an important message for our generation. JB had a rabid spirit of

entrepreneurship and showmanship that made him the Godfather of Soul and fully capable of handling the “show” and the “business.” This story is something that will cause some to reminisce and others to realize the power and prowess that made him great. !

What must be weighed in the balance of burdens that JB lived with is his ability to make a living for himself and at most estimations a band and road crew that ranged from 25-50 people on his payroll. Jay Z is a billionaire and singular signature but James Brown’s name was always followed by the band names like “The Flames” or the J.B’s with dancers and other artists. James was “The Man” through all eras of his musical life. He was Mr. Dynamite; Soul Brother Number One; The Hardest Working Man in Show Business; Creator of Funk and even posthumously The Godfather of Soul. From his impoverished upbringing he beat the odds to make it. After his debut single "Please, Please, Please" reached #5 on the R&B charts he never looked back as he would produce 17 charttopping hits over the next two decades, many spilling over into the pop market. The movie begins and ends at the end of his domination, but he was royalty by then and will always be. Get on up, and go see this movie. !

What’s happening in Ferguson By Miles Jaye

I wanted to take a minute to give you my take on the recent events in Ferguson or where we are now.

But again, I looked at the reports; I looked at the coverage and I say; okay, who’s not there? Who hasn’t showed up? And I made a little list.

Michael Brown is dead!

I wondered what you’d think; what you think of my list and I understand, I know I’m a little out there. I already know that!

It occurs to me that with each tragic shooting it becomes more and more clear that the answers are elusive, seemingly unavailable to us suggests to me that more than likely we’re asking the wrong questions or as they say we’re barking up the wrong tree. I personally believe that the traditional go to sources for remedies and solutions are no longer viable - like the story in the little book “Who Moved My Cheese?” It seems like the power of Government and the proverbial long arm of the law become impotent and ineffective which is evident in different points throughout history, throughout civilization. Edicts, dogma of organized religion; the presumed authority of organized religion fail to resonate throughout the community; which again suggests to me that it’s not resonance but a frequency issue. It seems that our mass consciousness is at such a low frequency -- at this point that our media that our entertainment, our TV, our policies - domestic, foreign how we live, how we treat each other.... There’s no excuse for this level of hate and disregard for other human beings here in the 21st Century, here in 2014. It’s done! The way we used to think is done; it’s toast... we need to stop and focus our attention on consciously directing our mass consciousness toward - real love. We use the word and it becomes vacuous; it becomes empty but I guarantee you we’d better figure out real PAGE 5

!

I know that my thinking is a little bit unconventional, but I made a list anyway. I want to read it to you. Hopefully, it’s not too long. love and we’d better figure it out quickly and I’m not just talking about here; I’m talking about here, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Africa, South America, the Mexican border, where ever there’s an absence of love, and it’s very clear that there’s an absence of love. We’d better figure it out! I said earlier in a discussion of the Mosaic Club that today’s concerns are going to shift to an awareness of and a conscious shift to a group thinking, a mass consciousness; I’m talking about humanity - no borders, no racial divide, no ethnic divides. Humanity towards an understanding of real love. I learned a long time ago that when you look at a problem, look at it from different perspectives. Try to get an idea of not just what’s present but what’s absent. So as I watch these reports on who’s showing up; everyone complains about Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson showing up and now Nelly has showed up. I’m tired of hearing reports from the officer’s friend; none of that is substantiated. It wouldn’t be admissible in court. Why are they running these things? So, when they say don’t trust the media, don’t trust the news, I understand why.

Okay, and maybe you’ll add to my list. And, here it is. My list of faces, voices, energy that would be very interesting to see on site right now in Ferguson and every other tragic scenario where we’d have media coverage. And I start with Deepak Chopra. I try to make this as close to alphabetical order as possible. I start with Deepak, Deepak Chopra, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Bill Cosby, Creflo Dollar, Minister Farrakhan, Fruit of Islam, 50 Cent, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Steve Harvey, Tom Joyner, T.D. Jakes, JayZ, Beyonce, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, NBA, WNBA, NFL, ABL, NHL, NASCAR, Kanye and Kim, Queen Latifah, Spike Lee, Mos Def, Nas, Joel Osteen, The Pope, Colin Powell, Preachers of L.A., Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins, Tavis Smiley and Cornell West, Michael Strayhan, Venus and Serena Williams, Wendy Williams, Lil’ Wayne, Paula White, Tiger Woods, Dick Gregory, Chuck D, and last but not least... Me! I’m out! Peace, Love and Blessings! !

Young people and diversity By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Each year I host a Youth Summit and Diversity Dialogue. This year it was held at Southern Methodist University with high school students from throughout the Dallas area in attendance. Now in its eighth year, the Summit is designed to bring about greater understanding, and better working relationships between young people of different faiths, ethnicities and countries of origin. It is extremely important that as a society we celebrate diversity. In our city and in our country we have young people from all over the world who have something of value to contribute as we create a culture of peace, harmony and brotherhood. Nearly 75 students participated in this year’s Summit. They heard from various speakers regarding cultural norms and customs in different parts of the world, and they exchanged ideas and concerns with one

another in small group sessions. They understand that they can share cultural and ethnic differences to make a better world for all people. Diversity is of extreme importance in our society. In the future, our country will be even more diverse. Value must be placed on the experiences of all people in a progressive society. The young people of today do not comprehend why America once had separate water fountains for people of different colors. They reject that concept. They also do not understand why there was a time when some people had to sit in the rear of public buses, or in the balconies of movie theaters. They refuse to hold on to prejudices that prevented America from becoming a great society sooner than it did. Speakers at the Summit urged the participants to work towards creating a world in which the cultures and experiences of all

people are given equal footing. Farrukh Valliani, the president of The Aga Khan Council of the Central United States, addressed the students, telling them that cultural diversity was crucial in today’s world. The Aga Khan Council helped to sponsor this year’s event. Dr. Lori White, the Vice President for Student Affairs at SMU, spoke to the students, telling them that they were the future leaders of the world. “It is important that people who are different from one another have respect for each other,” she said. “We need all of your talents.” Our world is dramatically different from what it was 20 years ago. Social norms and customs have changed. The young people who participated in the Summit will ensure that progress that has been made in the past two decades will continue. They understand that the future belongs to all of us.

My Wife is Imprisoned by an Old Love Dear Alma,

I found emails my wife has been writing to an old boyfriend who’s now in jail. He will be locked up for a long, long time. At first I wasn’t all that concerned, but now she’s sending him pictures. I found out because I read her email when she’s not home. I saw where she told him, “I can’t wait to get your letters” and “I wonder if you’re looking at my pictures and thinking about me.” Even though this man is in jail, it still affects me just as if she was writing to someone out in the streets. Am I being petty, or am I right in thinking that she is disrespecting me. I love my

Ask Alma wife, but this really makes me wonder. From, Mr. Wondering Dear Mr. Wondering,

And wonder you should, but there’s more than a few apps on disloyalty downloaded on your cell phone. Why are you checking your wife’s email when she’s not home? After addressing that, you can move on to your issue with the inmate. Nope, you’re not being petty. You just need to nip this rusty nail in the bud. It seems to me something was cockeyed before you caught sight of those emails.

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans over 25 years, including various roles at USA Today, Newsday and the Washington Post. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@yahoo.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma.

I’m not excusing her behavior, because infidelity is selfish and, yes, disrespectful. But some parts to this story you aren’t telling me. Tell her why you’re reading her email, and then ask her about her contact with him. Make sure you both honestly talk about both sides to this situation. Speak the truth to each other, not just saying words you think the other wants to hear. Equally important, listen to each other. If she makes this about you and the emails, then she’s not ready to own her unfaithful behavior.

Yes, you were wrong, but she’s wrong too, and both issues need to be admitted, confronted and discussed. Give purposeful thought to what you two want out of your marriage. Since he’ll be locked up, as you say, for a long, long time, both of you can work at this and take the necessary steps to rebuild your commitment, reminding each other that your devotion is crucial to saving your union. And don’t forget to apologize to each other. It is my hope that you two will find your way back to seeing each other through new eyes – eyes of forgiveness, blinking with compassion and winking with desire. Alma

The Long and Winding Road Light rail, Trinity River road highly scrutinized in South Dallas

By Patrice J. Holmes

editorial@dallasweekly.com

Studies by the University of Texas at Dallas Institute of Urban Policy, United Way and Texas A&M are taking place now to assess the quality of life in the South Dallas community before billion dollar projects involving the new DART Light Rail and the Trinity

Toll Road are brought to the area. Some construction has begun with the demolition of homes to follow later this year. At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward,

the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes

Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
