Say NO to any ASSAULT By Cheryl Smith - Texas Metro News

KENNY JAY Making Women Happy!

Welcome Home Ambassador Ron Kirk!

Just like a potential target can not immediately identify a predator, it is often hard to point out the victim of sexual assault or domestic abuse. There’s no big letter tattooed on their forehead or a certain look, smell or hairdo that will alert you that the person you are looking at is the survivor of what many have called the most horrific and demeaning assault: sexual assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and there are full-scale efforts to “raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.” This year’s campaign “focuses on healthy sexuality and child sexual abuse prevention.” Advocates are encouraging “everyone” to join the conversation and start talking about “healthy childhood development to prevent child sexual abuse.” Almost two decades ago, January 1, 1996, Tamecka Grate was violently attacked and her recovery has been called a “miracle.” It wasn’t long after the attack before the valiant 24-year-old was giving interviews, telling of the brutal assault that almost ended her life as doctors operated for over 13 hours to remove a pair of scissors from her skull. If you saw her today, you’d Tamecka Grate Frazier see just another beautiful woman who is in love with her life, her family and living. Ms. Grate’s attacker, Emanuel Moffert, 26, who ac-

tually dated her neighbor, was caught before he was able to rape her, but the assault was so brutal that the scars left behind could have continued to assault her, if not for a loving family, church, community and her faith. Gwendolyn Debra Mars Jones was assaulted by her step-father. She asked herself the questions that many victims ask: Why did this person act this way toward me? Am I responsible? Did I do something to cause this? Did my caretakers know about this and if so, why didn't they do something to stop it? She, like so many other young victims, was not believed -- which caused considerable trauma as the victim is twice victimized. Admittedly some “victims” have lied, producing another level of victims in the wrongfully accused, but there are other levels, like that victim who remains silent for whatever reason and the family and loved ones of the aforementioned who oftentimes don’t know what to say or do. Now who is the victim? It could be a newborn baby. Of course you think that this couldn’t be the case. Unfortunately there are so many cases of very, very young babies being as-

NEW Global African publication launches in Canada: Afri-Culture

(Ottawa, ON) - Over the last decade a number of long withstanding ethnic publications have fallen due to economic pressures. Although many news sources have been lost, there is a new generation Raissa Nkuba of young Publisher, Afri-Culture entrepreneurs ready to take the reigns and build sustainable media companies to fill in the information gap to the audiences highly neglected in commercial media. Raissa Nkuba, a young Congolese-descent entrepreneur, founded and launched Afri-Culture in January 2013. Afri-Culture is an online publication that focuses on the 'state of affairs' in African news around the world. As the African Diaspora's population grows, the need for news on the "Motherland" is much needed. Solely in its third month of launching this year, Afri-Culture has already over 6,000 followers on its social media accounts, and a growing global readership. According to Ms. Nkuba, Afri-Culture was founded to celebrate, honor and empower people of African descent. “At Afri-Culture, we take pride in the fact that we promote strictly positive information involving the African continent,” she explained. “Most of what is shown on the news in relation to Africa is usually negative.

Will it matter when it is your sister, mother, aunt or grandmotheror maybe YOU?

Why aren't we seeing news regarding Africa's incredibly fast development in the last couple of years? It's very important that we demonstrate a balanced perspective of the African continent. It's true--there is poverty in Africa, but the African continent is also home to some of the greatest authors, musicians and thinkers. Who is telling their stories? Afri-Culture was founded to tell the many stories of Africa. We are taking up this cause to empower and inspire the future generation. Although, the publication has been around for three months, it has quickly gained a significant number of fans and supporters -- further proving people are yearning for this information."

and has been translated into more than fifty languages. Professor Achebe’s global significance lies not only in his talent and recognition as a writer, but also as a critical thinker and essayist who has written extensively on questions of the role of culture in Africa and the social and political significance of aesthetics and analysis of the postcolonial state in Africa. He is renowned, for example, for “An Image of Africa,” his trenchant and famous critique of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Today, this critique is recognized as one of the most generative interventions on Conrad; and one that opened the social study of literary texts, particularly the impact of power relations on 20th century literary imagination. In addition, Professor Achebe is distinguished in his substantial and weighty investment in the building of literary arts institutions. His work as the founding editor of the Heinemann African Writers Series led to his editing over one hundred titles in it. Achebe also edited the University of Nsukka journal Nsukkascope, founded Okike: A Nigerian Journal of New Writing and assisted in the founding of a publishing house, Nwamife Books–an organization responsible for publishing other groundbreaking work by award-winning writers.

His condition was said to have deteriorated, which prompted the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to send him to the United States for further treatment. AUSTIN -- Senator Wendy Davis (Fort Worth) has won passage from the Senate Economic Development Committee of Senate Bill 248, a bill that would strengthen the ability of Texans wronged by wage discrimination to seek restitution in state court. Specifically, Sen. Davis’s bill would reset the time period in which someone may file a wage discrimination claim, providing that each time she receives a discriminatory paycheck, she has the right to pursue legal options. “Under current law, a victim of wage discrimination is prevented from filing a claim if 180 days have passed since she received her first inequitable paycheck,” Davis explained. “Because many businesses prohibit disclosure of salary information by employees, a woman won’t know about the discrimination and might be fired merely for asking about salaries. As a consequence, employers are rewarded for paying discriminatory wages, if they can get away with doing it for more than 180 days without a woman’s knowledge.” In 2013, women still do not receive equal pay for equal work. On average, women make just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. Over a woman’s career, that disparity leads to more than $430,000 in lost wages. “Senate Bill 248 would start the 180 day clock whenever a woman receives a paycheck that is less than what a male co-worker is paid for the same job and restarts each time she is paid an inferior salary. This allows women to actually enforce their right to equal pay,” Sen. Davis said. SB 248 clarifies the statute of limitations with regard to unlawful discrimination and codifies the Lilly Ledbetter Act under state law. By passing the bill, Texas would give women the same protections in state court, with a locally-elected judge, as they have in federal court.

AUSTIN — The annual Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup is Saturday, April 20 and Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson is getting the word out with a creative -- and revolting -- new public service announcement. “Fresh from the sea, enjoy these special dishes prepared just for you, like used cigarette butts and broken bottle combo,” says an unreasonably chipper voice while a plate piled with broken glass and beer bottle tops is served up. “Or why not try our new catch of the day — 55-gallon drum. And make sure to save plenty of room for our all new dirty diaper pie.” “This ad is intentionally disgusting,” Patterson said. “But sometimes folks need to be shocked into understanding that the trash they drop on the beach makes it into the ocean and eventually into our food chain. Hopefully this ad will motivate people to keep our beaches clean. Just don’t watch it before dinner.” Texas — home to the nation’s first all-volunteer beach cleanup in 1986 — boasts one of the biggest all-volunteer beach cleanups in the world. And on April 20, more than 10,000 Texans are expected to participate in the Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup at 28 sites along the Texas Coast. Volunteers may register on-line for the Spring Cleanup at www.TexasAdoptABeach.org or at 27 of the 28 check-in sites (advanced registration required for St. Jo Island) beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20. Each volunteer will be given data cards, gloves, pencils and trash bags. All volunteers are advised to wear closed-toe shoes, bring sunscreen and plenty of drinking water. The Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Cleanups are held rain or shine. Texans who are not able to attend the cleanup can help keep their beaches clean by making a tax-deductible donation online at www.TexasAdoptABeach.org. There are several different Adopt-A-Beach sponsorship levels ranging from $25 to $25,000, allowing both individuals and corporations to contribute to this major cleanup effort. Statewide coastal cleanups are held every spring and fall. Shell Oil Company and Motiva Enterprises are the lead statewide sponsors for the 27th Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup. Other sponsors include HNTB, Exxon-Mobil Chemical, Schlumberger, Keep Texas Beautiful, Halliburton, the Newfield Foundation, the Environmentally Friendly Drilling Program and SeaWorld of San Antonio. To learn how you can participate, or for additional information on the Adopt-A-Beach program, please visit www.TexasAdoptABeach.org or contact the GLO at 1-877-TX COAST. EDITORIAL/OPINION

Child Abuse Prevention Month brings plenty of burden to share

By Sen. Carlos Uresti If the 93 residents of Domino in Cass County were to suddenly disappear, it would make headlines around the world. Yet more than twice as many Texas children died of abuse and neglect last year, and I doubt you've seen much about them. It is human nature to pay more attention to things that happen all at once and ignore them when they trickle out. Otherwise we'd be more appalled that 212 Texas kids died at the hands of their parents and other caregivers in 2012. This is why Child Abuse Prevention Month is so important. We need to be more appalled — about the number of deaths, the number of alleged victims of child abuse - 275,961; and the number of confirmed cases - 64,366. That's an average of 176 kids every day who are beaten, slapped around, bullied, or emotionally terrorized into a life of dread. Protecting children requires yearround vigilance, but Child Abuse Prevention Month gives us an opportunity each April to turn up the volume on public awareness. The idea is not just to make you By all accounts from those who are familiar with him and his work, the new pope is a profound intellectual who has avoided the regal trappings of office. Instead, he lived in a simple apartment and traveled on public transportation while a senior church official in Argentina. Once selected he quickly took the name of Saint Francis of Assisi, who was known for his work with people who had little wealth, but great faith. Legend has it that once while praying he heard a voice that said “go Francis and repair my house. Born in 1182, Saint Francis founded the Franciscan order whose members were devoted to the service of others, particularly those who found themselves in need. His life was one that many priests throughout the history of

mad that so many kids live in terror, but to spur some action that will continue after this one-month focus is over. That's a goal of the Blue Ribbon Task Force, which I created in 2004 after the Christmas Day starvation death of 4-year-old Jovonie Ochoa by his grandmother. For almost ten years this group has been exploring and implementing new ideas about child abuse prevention. Its volunteers have walked numerous San Antonio neighborhoods and knocked on many doors, bringing a message of help and hope.

The Statewide Blue Ribbon Task Force, created through legislative action, has focused its efforts on coordinating the prevention efforts of existing agencies, programs, advocacy groups, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. Child Abuse Prevention Month also provides an opportunity to highlight legislative efforts, particularly regarding the agency that serves as our first line of defense — Child Protective Services. I am sponsoring bills that would enhance training for CPS supervisors, limit the caseloads of investigators and other CPS caseworkers, and create a task force to examine the church have attempted to emulate for its depth of belief and its vast charity. A fan of soccer in his native country, Pope Francis refused to be driven in a chauffeured limousine and prepared his own meals. He is the first Jesuit Pope and is also the first non-European Pope in 1200 years. I believe that Pope Francis will be inclusive, that he will seek more diversity in the leadership of the church and that he will place greater emphasis on the development of the faith in South America and Africa, two continents where the church’s population continues to grow. According to the Pew Research Center, the five countries with the highest numbers of Catholics are Brazil (126 m), Mexico (96 m), the

hiring and management practices at the Department of Family and Protective Services, which oversees CPS. This legislation is designed to increase efficiency while lowering the stress levels of CPS caseworkers, with the goal of lowering the agency's unacceptable turnover rate of 26.1 percent. I also support an initiative by Sen. Jane Nelson, the Home Visiting Accountability Act, to ensure that home visiting programs are serving Texas children with the most need, with proven programs designed to protect them from abuse, improve parenting skills, enhance school readiness, and increase the positive function of families. While I also support greater funding for prevention programs — which currently account for only 3.5 percent of the agency's budget — these bureaucratic changes could help CPS do a better job at protecting children, but they won't take us all the way to our goal. That's where you come in. It's everyone's job to watch out for our kids, and that means you have a role to play. Wear a blue pin or ribbon this month — the international symbol for child abuse prevention — attend a prevention month event in your community, donate to your local children's shelter or battered women's shelter, be a CASA volunteer, keep a watchful eye on the kid next door. Just don't wait for another 212 children to die before you get mad. State Senator Carlos I. Uresti, represents Texas Senate District 19. Philippines (75.5 m), the United States (75.3 m) and Italy (49 m). There are 31 million Catholics in Argentina, the Pope’s land of birth. Thirty-nine percent of the world’s Catholics live in Latin America and the Caribbean. No other part of the world has a larger percentage. While serving as a Cardinal in Argentina, Pope Francis spontaneously washed and kissed the feet of twelve patients ravaged with HIV/AIDS during a hospital visit. He said to those with him that he was not one to forget the “sick and the poor. Certainly, he will prove himself to be a pope of the people. Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

Beyond Chocolates & Roses: Community Love & Commitment after the Kimani Gray Shooting decades ago. And what real structural, policy, and intervention efforts have been made?

By Dr. Toby Jenkins This morning I woke up in a curfew O God, I was a prisoner, too - yeah! Could not recognize the faces standing over me They were all dressed in uniforms of brutality…. thats why we gonna be burnin & a-lootin tonight -Bob Marley, “Burnin & Lootin”

Can protestors be patriots? Can looters be change agents? Can we view unrest as anything other than violence and law breaking? Recently, four days of protest in Brooklyn, NY left many people around the country asking questions about the human behavior behind rioting, the effectiveness of protest, and the historical vestiges of police brutality that create a tipping point for outrage. There are several issues at play in this complex discussion, but undoubtedly this is an issue of community, love, and patriotism. The Huffington Post posed the question, “Are NYPD officers too disconnected with the communities they serve to protect?” Civil service positions are often dangerous, underpaid, and highly stressful. But they are indeed meant to be a form of community service. One of the basic tenets of any community-based work is the need to develop a strong, lasting, and collaborative relationship with the community. Find out what they need. Understand what they believe are solutions. Elicit their help in leading, building, and transforming their communities. In the field of education, we know that some of the best educational outcomes can be achieved when education is a community effort—involving families and community leaders. Strong relationships with the community and an equally strong commitment to students can be achieved when teachers live in the communities where they work. It creates a sense of ownership, concern and understanding. Such is the case with the police force. We have got to be real about the growing tension between police officers and the communities they serve. Twenty-five years ago, the rap group N.W.A. shocked the world with their direct and forceful declaration, “F… the Police” which was a song on their Straight Out of Compton album. The song is rated #417 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. That’s telling. We should have listened deeply and read between the lines then. People held contempt for the police in their community

A reporter asked me last week, why did I think people chose to riot and destroy their own communities? I’ve been thinking deeply about this question. First, it doesn’t matter where people are standing, when they reach their boiling point they rage where they are. If a couple gets into an argument in the kitchen, they don’t stop and take it to the living room because the kitchen is meant for cooking. They stand their ground where they are. Also, it’s important to consider that people are raging where the incidents are happening. People are being harassed and shot on the same streets where they are rioting. The injustice happens there so why not the protest? Finally, it is often easy to stand on the outside and shake our heads at people, proclaiming that it’s a shame that they are destroying their own community. But does the community truly “belong” to them? Do they own it? Do they run it? Do they have any say in the matters that really count concerning community development and city planning? Do investors (who don’t live in or care about the community) own the majority of the neighborhood, and do most of the residents just live there? These are not simple reactions to one isolated incident. They are a build up of tension and disenfranchisement—a reaction to much broader circumstances of living. And I pose the question, is the response all together wrong?

We correct our children out of love. So why don’t we see people that take that same approach outside of their family as being true patriots? If we were to see a child acting out in public the first question we ask is, “Where are the parents?” and we often negatively judge their parental abilities. So why don’t we do the same thing to citizens that live blindly in our country, who take no interest in truly learning our countries history, and that recite news bites without doing further research? Why don’t we judge their lack of critical and deep engagement as citizens? Instead, we define patriotism through words rather than action. And so this is an issue of defining active citizenship within all of the spaces that we occupy…our country, our companies, and our communities.

I used to work at Penn State University where I led a cultural center named after Paul Robeson, another great activist in history who was persecuted and attacked for challenging the politics of the day. Though many people today applaud Paul Robeson as one of the greatest domestic and global humanitarians of his time, when he was alive this country applied its full weight to crush him because of his outspoken work and criticism against segregation, lynching, and global oppression in Africa. Attacked as a communist because of his active travel throughout the world and open sympathy for the struggles against Well one thing that we oppression of all should have learned people, he was from protests of the eventually called past is that we need before the House diverse strategies to Un-American create sustainable Committee. When asked at the In a broad sense, I am concerned that our hearing why he didn’t just leave the United country has raised citizens that are not taught States and become an ex-patriot, he said how to be critical thinkers—to question, to boldly and unapologetically: learn, to criticize the status quo. We seem to be zombies that recite catch phrases and key "My father was a slave and my people died to words that sound poetic meanwhile ignoring build this country, and I'm going to stay right practices, policies, and laws that oppress peo- here and have a part of it, just like you. You love your child so much that And of course there is also Dr. Martin Luther you don’t want to see her do wrong and so King, Jr., whose model of leadership is often you discipline and correct every wrong turn. praised and is therefore relevant to this dis-

cussion. Dr. King was not the type of man to silently accept the status quo or to engage in uncritical dialogue about his country. He was fighting the unfair policies and practices of the United States through nonviolent social action. And in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Dr. King spoke frankly about the necessity for critical thought and social tension to create social change. And he challenged the citizens of our country to become active agents for social justice rather than passive moderates that sustain, through their inaction, the status quo. Making any entity better, whether it is a school, a company, or a country is not achieved through rhetoric that makes us feel good, but rather through action and calls to action that inspire us to do good. Here is what King had to say: “But I must confess that I am not afraid of the word ‘tension.’ I have earnestly opposed violent tension, but there is a type of constructive, nonviolent tension which is necessary for growth…I have been gravely disappointed with the…moderate…who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” My hope is that we begin to view patriotism as not being exercised through simplistic statements of blind love and praise, but instead through a dedication to doing the hard, challenging, and almost parental work of rearing and growing, guiding and developing the communities that we love. I do believe that the ethic behind being free and open to critically challenge one’s country in an effort to make it better and more accountable is something to be encouraged because it illustrates authentic love. Anyone that is a parent, a wife, a husband, a sister, a brother or a friend knows that real love goes far beyond chocolates and roses, fun and games. It is actually hard and critical work. We did not give birth to the country we live in, but we have adopted the responsibility to continue to raise it. And like any good parent, we must be actively present, engaged, and vocal through every step it takes. She received her Masters in College Student Personnel Services from the University of Maryland, College Park and completed her doctoral studies in Educational Theory & Policy at Penn State University. ASK THE ADVOCATE Dear Advocate, I was sexually abused by my uncle when I was in the second grade. The worst part about it is that my mother and grandmother blamed me for it and they tried to make to confess, but I never did. I had nightmares that I could not explain for several years as a child. To this day I struggle with memory blocks and putting together all what happened with this terrible man. As bad as that was, the worst part, however, is the fact that my family did not believe me and punished me. As an adult now, I still struggle with anger and depression. I think I’m fairly successful in my life. I graduated college and I have a good job and I’m able to support and take care of myself but at times I feel like something is holding me back. Why am I still dealing with this when this happened so long ago? Confused and Angry! Dallas, TX Dear Confused and Angry, Your story is tragic but unfortunately a common occurrence. I’m so sorry to hear of your hurt, pain, fear and betrayal at such an early age. Sexual abuse is a traumatic experience which causes a great deal of confusion and anger in a person’s life. First of all, I want to say this to you. This is not your fault! Hear me again, this is not your fault! Survivors carry a bucket load of false guilt and shame which belong solely on the abuser, which in your case, was your uncle. No child at any time can provide genuine consent to sexual activity because they are lacking the mental and emotional development to understand the consequences that come along with this act. So, he is held 100% responsible for his shameful and criminal act committed against you. Secondly, not to be believed by primary caretakers is a double betrayal and often feels worse than the actual sexual violation. I regret that your mother and grandmother were not able to provide you the care and protection you needed in order to feel safe. The nightmares, memory blocks, confusion, depression and anger are the after-effects of sexual trauma. Sexual abuse creates an emotional wound in the victim/survivor’s life and will not be healed until it is appropriately addressed. Many times we think we can ignore it and it will go away. We’re only deceiving ourselves with this mentality. The pain will express itself in other areas of our lives: mentally, emotionally, physically, relationally and spiritually. Seek a licensed professional who is trained in working with survivors of sexual violence. Join a sexual abuse recovery group whereby you can learn truth about your experience and be healed. Gwendolyn Gwendolyn Jones is a spokesperson and advocate for the sexually exploited. Being victimized herself as an adolescent she has walked the path of recovery from victim, to survivor to an overcomer. She began facilitating support groups in 2008 to help survivors of sexual violence heal emotionally and spiritually from the devastating effects of inappropriate sexual behavior.

Michael Baisden, author, self publishing several best selling books including "Never Satisfied," "Men Cry In The Dark," "The Maintenance Man I and II," and "God's Gift to Women." Two of his books were adapted to stage plays, starring such renowned actors as Richard Roundtree and Billy Dee Williams. His radio highlights include one of his proudest moments when on September 20, 2007, he passionately and skillfully spearheaded the famous Jena 6 March in Jena, Louisiana. This historic and momentous occasion garnered tens of thousands of citizens of all races to peacefully march in support of six young men who had been unfairly treated by the justice system. Another historic year was 2008 when Michael Baisden endorsed Senator Barack Obama and went on to celebrate President Obama's victory with over 4,000 fans at a watch party in Miami on election night. The Obama camp, along with millions of listeners, credited him with being one of the major forces behind this historic victory to elect the first African American to the Presidency of the United States and in his re-election in 2012. In December 2009, Baisden called for a National Mentor Training Day and announced his plans for a 2010 nationwide campaign. He pledged up to $350,000 of his own money to be donated in over 72 markets he would visit on a bus tour. The outreach was named "One Million Mentors National Campaign To Save Our Kids." USMD Hospital at Fort Worth ranks #10 on list of nation's Top Hospitals on the National HCAHPS Survey IRVING, Texas – USMD Hospital at Fort Worth has earned a prestigious spot on the list of top 58 acute-care hospitals in the nation, according to the national 2012 Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and System (HCAHPS) Survey. The annual survey—the first standardized, publicly reported assessment of hospital performance—gathers data from randomly selected patients 24 hours to six weeks following their hospital discharge. In a series of 27 questions, participants are asked to rate their hospital experience in several key areas, including: how well nurses and physicians communicate with patients, how responsive the staff is to patients’ needs, how well they help patients manage pain, the cleanliness and quietness of the facility, and whether or not they would recommend the hospital to someone else. Eightynine percent of the survey participants who were patients at USMD Hospital at Fort Worth awarded the hospital a nine or 10 on a zero-to-10 scale. “It is incredibly rewarding to know that our patients feel they are receiving the attentive, compassionate, quality care they deserve,” said Stephanie Atkins-Guidry, BSN, RN, MBA, chief executive officer and chief nursing officer of USMD Hospital at Fort Worth. “Every member of our staff is committed to delivering an exceptional experience and the best possible medical outcome for the patients who entrust us with their care. This positive feedback lets us know we are hitting the mark. I am so proud to share this accomplishment with every physician and staff member at USMD Hospital at Fort Worth.” Throughout the healthcare industry, the HCAHPS Survey is viewed as one of the most credible, important measures of hospital performance because it gathers objective patient insights that allow hospitals to be compared in areas that are important to consumers. Additionally, public reporting of the survey makes hospitals more accountable and serves as a strong incentive for hospitals to improve the quality of care they provide. “This honor is especially meaningful because it reflects the very core of our mission,” says John House, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of USMD Holdings.

Parkland provides healthy meal planning tips for National Nutrition Month •Don’t skip meals. It’s important to eat three planned meals every day. Skipping meals may slow down your metabolism and cause you to over-eat at the next meal.

Parkland Health & Hospital System staff is emphasizing the importance of engraining healthy food choices into daily menu options to promote a lifelong commitment to healthy living. Themed, “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ national campaign focused on developing sound eating habits and promoting physical activity, something Parkland nutritionists mirror in their daily interactions with patients. “Sometimes we eat for different reasons, for taste, comfort, convenience, or emotional eating, but not for the nutritional value of the food for health,” said Sharon Cox, a Registered Dietitian at Parkland. “We should eat to give our body the nutrition it needs for good health.” Cox says a healthy meal plan consists of a balance of lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy, fiber and calcium.

•Be mindful of portion sizes. Train yourself to take home leftovers when you eat out.

She suggests the following tips to help jump-start a healthy meal plan:

“If you’re on a tight budget, look for sales, buy in bulk, cut coupons, buy frozen fruits and vegetables and choose store

•Plan your meals in advance to avoid over-eating and making unhealthy eating choices. •Eat two to three healthy snacks (fruit, yogurt, graham crackers) between meals. Make sure each snack is at least two hours after your last meal. •Drink six to eight glasses of water daily. •Avoid fried food. Try baking or grilling instead.

brands,” Cox said. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that it’s more expensive to buy healthy food. That’s simply not true.” Parkland also supports healthy living in the community by offering weight management groups, diabetes meal planning classes, one-on-one nutrition counseling, group nutrition counseling, cardiovascular classes and diabetes weight management groups – all free of charge to patients at Parkland’s network of Community Oriented Primary Care health centers. Additionally, Parkland partners with the Dallas Independent School District each summer to offer boys and girls the opportunity to attend a summer camp called Choosing Healthy Activities, Meals and Positive Self-Esteem (CHAMPS). Camp CHAMPS teaches children ages 7 to 16 about positive self-esteem, nutrition and exercise. The program is free and parents are encouraged to attend with their children. Keeping Alcohol in the Limelight:

6 Facts for Alcohol Awareness Month

Provided by: Dr. Deni Carise, Deputy Chief Clinical Officer, CRC Health Group

When most people think of substance abuse, heroin, marijuana and prescription drugs often come to mind. However, one substance that can be bought overthe counter legally is among the most destructive and sadly, overlooked. Alcohol is society’s oldest and most widely used mind-altering chemical, it’s so ingrained in our culture, that it’s difficult to imagine it as illegal for adults. Cocaine, heroin, and now prescription drugs continue to occupy the headlines— as indeed they should—but alcohol deserves the same attention. Our nation’s alcohol problem may not seem as scandalous, but it’s just as serious. When compared to many drugs, alcohol is as equally life-threatening claiming more than 80,000 lives a year. As April is Alcohol Awareness Month, below is a list of six destructive powers

of alcohol we’ve brought to the forefront –facts that are often overlooked: 1. Alcohol is indeed a drug. What’s more, it’s a drug that carries especially high risks for adolescents, whose brains are still developing. 2. Alcohol is a financial burden. Excessive drinking causes more public health problems than all other drugs combined and according to the CDC, costs society $224 billion annually. 3. More people abuse alcohol than illicit drugs. Eight percent of Americans over the age of 12 abuse illicit drugs. 34 percent abuse or misuse alcohol. 4. Alcohol destroys the brain. There’s no evidence to show that heroin—a drug perceived to be highly dangerous—causes extensive structural changes in the brain. But there is evidence that this occurs as a result of long-term heavy drinking. Also, heroin withdrawal is less likely to be fatal than alcohol withdrawal.

2013 Alopecia Essay contest

5. Just because alcohol is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe. We know that legal prescriptions drugs, if misused, are anything but harmless and cause a growing number of deaths each year. The same is true of alcohol. Drunk driving— one of the many causes of alcohol-related fatalities—accounts for 32 percent of all traffic deaths. 6. Alcohol-related deaths are preventable. In fact, heavy drinking, including binge and underage drinking, is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States. We must invest in education, screening, and treatment efforts, so the public better understands alcohol’s dangers, and a person struggling with alcoholism can get help—before it’s too late. Deni Carise, Ph.D. is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in behavioral health and substance abuse treatment and research and has been part of the recovery community for over 25 years.

COVER STORY

Martin, continued from front page

Martin currently is host and managing editor of TV One’s Washington Watch with Roland Martin, and a senior analyst for The Tom Joyner Morning Show. He is also a nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate and a contributor to CNN. “Roland Martin has had an enviable career as a multimedia journalist, becoming a respected and trusted voice in print, on air and online,” said NABJ President Gregory Lee, Jr. “He is unapologetic about his quest to provide well-rounded coverage of the African-American community, and to provide unique insights to diverse audiences across the many platforms on which he is asked to contribute on a regular basis.” Martin will be honored with others at the association’s Salute to Excellence Gala on August 3, 2013, during NABJ’s 38th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Orlando. “I am enormously thankful and humbled that NABJ has bestowed this amazing honor on me for my work as a fearless voice in advocating the critical issues facing voters in the 2012 election, but especially as they relate to African Americans,” said Martin. “I hope this honor serves as a lesson to any young or veteran journalist that Black media platforms are just as essential and important to us today as they have always been. Before CNN, TV One offered me a TV platform for my commentaries, as well my own show. After CNN, TV One and Tom Joyner, are still there. It pleases me greatly to be at a place where our voices and images are the norm, and not the exception. I’m enormously thankful for the opportunity.”

Those who nominated Martin noted his important coverage of voter suppression, perhaps the biggest story of the 2012 presidential election.

He is the former executive editor and general manager of The Chicago Defender, one of the nation’s oldest black newspapers. He was the founding news editor for Savoy Magazine, and the founding editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com. Ask Gwen My husband mistreated me but later tried to be nice! Dear Gwen: I have been married for seven years and the marriage has been horrible from the getgo. In short, Gwendolyn, I have suffered abuse, abandonment, disrespect and dishonesty. My mother advised me not to marry him. I have truly regretted not taking her advice. The problem continued…. My husband left me because I refused to take a job in a rundown hotel in a rundown section of town. He was trying to push me into danger but he didn’t have a job at all. After I refused to take the job, he started calling me names. He tried to assure me I was a nobody. I couldn’t take care of my child and that I was stupid. About six months ago, he called and said he didn’t want to be married anymore. From

that point I moved on with my life and have found happiness. I now have a new friend and he treats me like gold, bronze, and silver. He says I am more valuable than diamonds. When I told my husband, he started to be nicer and wanted to come back. I think he realizes I don’t want to give him another chance. I have filed for divorce. What makes me angry is that he has taken up friendship with another woman so soon after our separation. Joan Dear Joan: Your husband more than likely already had his new friend. Do not become bitter with him. He is not worth your thoughts. It is only a matter of time before he starts to mistreating her as well. And, Joan, he might treat her good but don’t concern yourself with that. A failed marriage or a failed courtship hurts and hurts badly. Enjoy your new friend. Girl, you got it going on. Many men will treat you like gold, bronze, and silver – but seldom you find a man who will think of you as — diamonds in the mix.

Single Mom Chronicles

(214) 941-0110

by Tonya English

No time for a man right now!

Dear SMC, I'm in desperate need of some guidance. I'm the mother of three teenagers who are all active in sports. I'm a part time student and I work full time. I make sure that I support all three kids in their activities. This, in itself, is challenging because there have been times when more than one child had something going on, on the same day. How do I decide which activity to attend? I don't like having to choose between my children. Let's not even talk about the times when I had to miss my kids’ activities because I had a test to take or a major paper due! As you can tell, I clearly don't have any free time. Here's my dilemma. I met a really nice guy about two months ago, and he keeps asking me out. I keep tactfully declining because I can't fit a man into the equation right now. He keeps telling me that it's only lunch or dinner and I have to eat so he doesn't understand why I keep turning him down. He won't take no for an answer, but I'm afraid to say yes! He's very attractive and is truly a gentleman. I've been single for the past three years. I have needs and desires just like the next person, but I have to suppress those feelings because the needs of my children ALWAYS come first! I can't chance starting a relationship because I know that it will require putting in work and time. Where am I supposed to find this extra time to invest in a relationship? I already feel as if I'm not giving my children what they need because I'm so overextended timewise. I'm not even sure that my kids would welcome a man into our world since it's just been the four of us for so long. What do I do? No Time for a Life Right Now

Dear No Time for a Life Right Now, First let me applaud your “superwoman” efforts. Secondly, let me enlighten you…”you are NOT superwoman!” As single moms we would like to be everything to everybody all the time, but the reality is that we can’t. Another reality is that we do matter and we should have relationships other than those with our children. With that said, let’s put it all into perspective.

It is so wonderful that your children are all so involved in outside activities and that you make every effort to support them. What I would suggest is that you also enlist the support of the other parents who Tonya English attend your children’s events. Make friends with team parents so that they can yell your child’s name just as loudly as they yell their own. If there are some friends who aren’t as busy or haven’t any children of their own; or if there are church members who may be able to and would possibly love to see children involved, ask them to be in attendance in your absence. After all, children just want to be encouraged and congratulated. It never hurts to have some cover for those occasions when you can’t be in three places at the same time. You’d be surprised at how excited your child will be to receive an unexpected hug, hand shake and/or “good job” from someone other than you. I think that you need to stop using your children as an excuse to avoid a “life.” You’re overthinking an opportunity to interact with another adult and as Mr. Nice Guy stated, “it’s only food and you have to eat.” Take a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon just for yourself and let the man treat you to a nice meal. Find time to converse on the phone. Send an occasional email or text message. Don’t close your life off to just your children because believe it or not, one day they will all grow up and move on. You are right, relationships require time and effort, but every meal doesn’t lead to marriage. It’s time you take it one chew at a time. Tonya English is an entrepreneur, writer, motivational speaker and the founder of Single Mom Chronicles. She resides in the Dallas metroplex and is the single mom of two teenage girls.

Foundation presents screening for children during Dallas International Film Festival

The artist of “Ewing Pride” Mario AC Della Casa, Arthur E. Benjamin, Larry Hagman, and Dallascast members Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy.

The Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation partnered with The Larry Hagman Foundation, along with the Dallas Film Society and LOOK Cinemas, to offer students from Dallas Independent School District a chance to experience the Dallas International Film Festival in a unique way on Opening Day. More than 100 students from Dunbar Elementary and Dade Middle School – through The Larry Hagman Foundation partnership with Frazier Revitalization, Inc. – enjoyed a walk down the red carpet, a matinee screening of the animated film “The Croods,” and an opportunity for a brief Q&A with filmmakers following the screening. Arthur E. Benjamin, chairman of the Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation, is sponsoring the Dallas International Film Festival for the fourth year and, this year, is partnering with The Larry Hagman Foundation, for the first time at the festival, as a way to provide an extraordinary and educational experience benefiting children of Dallas in honor of the late Larry Hagman. “Larry was my friend, my mentor and one of those ‘bigger than life personalities’ that touched one's life and heart in such a way that things are never the same again,” described Benjamin. “This partnership with The Larry Hagman Foundation is about remembering a great ‘Dallas Point of Light’ by recognizing Mr. Hagman's works and his contributions to the underprivileged children and youth of Dallas. We are grateful to honor him in this special way.” "We are so grateful for the generosity of Arthur E. Benjamin and the Dallas International Film Festival for providing the students of Dunbar Elementary and Dade Middle School with this educational and entertaining experience,” said Lisa Blue Baron, president of The Larry Hagman Foundation. “Larry would have been overjoyed about being a part of this field trip with the students he was so proud to support through his Foundation." Students arrived at LOOK Cinemas and stepped off of the school bus onto the red carpet. Once escorted to their seats inside the auditorium, they heard from the Dallas Film Society, The Larry Hagman Foundation and Benjamin before the movie starts. “We are glad to work with such great organizations as the Arthur E. Benjamin Foundation and The Larry Hagman Foundation in order to honor such an icon as Larry Hagman,” said Renée Contreras, Director of Membership, Education and Outreach of the Dallas Film Society. “This will be such an incredible opportunity to expose these students to the art of film.”

The On Air Divas

Ebony & D’Lyte By Ebony & D’Lyte @onairdivas @ebonymozay

By Ms. Ray www.deepintheroots.com Let me introduce myself. I am Ms. Ray, founder and owner of Deep In The Roots L.L.C., an all-natural hair salon in the southern sector of Dallas. Physical address is 837 W. Pleasant Run Rd, Lancaster, TX 75146. I am also the founder of Natural Essences L.L.C, an all-natural hair product line. I went natural in 1999 and decided to stop using chemicals on clients as well. I set out on a journey to learn more about doing chemical free hair styling; due to the lack of knowledge available, it was a hard journey. The lack of Information motivated me to open my own salon and start my product line. I wanted an environment where people could come and learn about the cultural and hair roots. We provide services from braids to locs to twists to flat ironing. My salon basically does everything to hair in a healthy way without the use of chemicals. From seeing the desecration of women’s head from the harsh chemicals this led me to formulate a product line geared towards the restoration of balding and thinning hair and edges. I am a motivational speaker because of my passion to inform all about health and hair. Our diet determines the outcome of our hair being full of luster, body and totally moisturized vs. dry, brittle, and breaking. We must learn to embrace our God given textures whether curly, straight, kinky or coily. I am so excited about sharing information about various topics to readers: What you eat affects your health, simple styling techniques, how to properly shampoo kinky hair, kinky hair in corporate America, how to read product labels, hair and relationships and the list goes on. Our hair is truly our Glory! Visit me online at www.deepintheroots.com or call salon at 972-227-7735.

Surely you knew that: Hair doesn't grow on four places on the body: eyelids, the palms of your hands, lips and the soles of your feet.

Kenny Jay is here to make you HAPPY!

By Kenny Jay kennyjayonair@gmail.com Let me start by saying I am extremely excited about writing my first column here. I would also like to encourage you to give me your feedback.

I thought long and hard about what to write about, with so much going on not only nationally, but locally. There’s the Gun Law discussion, the economy, etc. I decided to go in a totally different direction. I would like to discuss BEAUTY SHOP TALK!!!! That’s right, beauty shop talk. My lady goes all the time, and I talk to a lot of women on the radio all day every day, and it’s what I’ve been told that is discussed in the beauty shop among other things. A lady once called into my show and asked a very traditional/popular question: Why do all man cheat? Oh boy!!! Here we go. First and foremost, all men DO NOT CHEAT! I’m one who does not cheat on my queen. However, that being said, a lot of men do. Today I’m going to tell you why and how to know if your man is cheating.

Are you ready? lol. First let’s address “Do all men Cheat?” Short answer NO...Now on to the why men cheat part, believe it or not ladies it’s a simple answer: BECAUSE HE WANTS TO. While talking to this lady on my radio show, she asked “Kenny when you and your homeboys are talking do they ever talk about cheating on their ladies?” I told her that it is really not a conversation that men have. Now I will say me and the fellows could be having a generic conversation and a attractive lady walks by, a man may say something to the effect of, “MAN SHE IS FINE!” But not often will a man tell another man he is cheating on his woman. It is my opinion that if a man decides to cheat it is probably no feelings/emotions involved. It’s strictly physical. Now of course that is still no reason nor does it make it right. Now I believe for a woman who may

have decided to step out on her man would probably be more emotional. And fellows, remember it’s probably somebody she is known for quite some time. So basically at the end of my long conversation with this lady, I told her there’s good news and bad news. Bad news -- unfortunately some men cheat. Good news -- all men do not cheat. On to the “how do you know if your man is cheating?” Well ladies I have another simple answer -- you’re not crazy -- you know when something is different. But let’s have some fun. Here are a few things to look for. 1. Does your man come home and turn his phone off or put it on vibrate? 2. Is he not interested in having sex as much anymore? Listen if your man is cheating, you probably know who she is,

APRIL 1, 2013

15

and it’s probably somebody from his past because for some reason some men go backwards. In closing if you feel something is not right ask questions, and if you’re satisfied with the answers then your man is probably not cheating. However if you don’t feel comfortable with the answers you may have a problem. Now if your man comes home late and smells like another woman, ask him to give you some loving and if he says “no” your man may just be cheating... Remember give me your feedback at kennyjayonair@gmail.com Listen to me weekdays from 2p7p on Old School 94.5 And remember: What’s my job? That’s right -- To make women happy!

That Celebrity Interview

By Yvette Brooks

Meet your CURLFRIEND

with Valder Beebe

“I don’t talk about the Stars -- I interview the World’s Most Fascinating Celebrities” Kirk Franklin, nine-time Grammy winner, multiplatinum-selling musician and producer, a.k.a. The King of Contemporary Gospel, took time to talk with me on The Valder Beebe Show. We chatted about pairing his musical talents with Jeff Foxworthy’s humor on Season Two of The American Bible Challenge on GSN Network. His new album “Hello Fear” was released in March, and his book, The Blueprint: A Plan for Living Above Life’s Storms, was a New York Times Bestseller. VALDER BEEBE: Kirk, thank you for returning to the Valder Beebe Show broadcast on Dallas’ KKVI FM Radio (kkvidfw.com). Congratulations on your role on GSN’s American Bible Challenge. I am excited because time has come for a positive form of reality TV. To me, this is REAL reality TV. Kirk, I know that you were raised by your Aunt who ensured that you went to church, learned music and knew that you had a relationship with God. Do you think you would be a good contestant on American Bible Challenge? KIRK FRANKLIN: I would be an OK contestant (laughter). There are things I thought I knew about, until I became a part of the show. When I got the call from GSN, I did not know how I would fit, but they allow me to use my strengths, music. I am going to be there performing with the choir. I am going to bring the Crunk to the show. VALDER BEEBE: You and your wife were featured on the cover of Jet Magazine, and your headline was “Balancing Family and Work.” Any inspiration to young families? KIRK FRANKLIN: Many times we sacrifice the family to chase success. My success is that my kids know me as daddy and my wife knows me as her hero and proctor. VALDER BEEBE: We look forward to seeing you host and perform on GSN’s American Bible Challenge. The Valder Beebe Show - www.valderbeebe.com started as a global broadcast. Brands include The Valder Beebe Show; Valder Beebe Show THAT CELEBRITY INTERVIEW (audio and satellite video), BeeBe’s Smart Living (newspaper lifestyle section), launching 2013 Spiritual Women-Of-Faith, broadcast.

I am the host of Love A Natural Me on Cheryl’s World. You will find my friends and I at www.blogtalkradio. com/cherylsmith every Wednesday 6 8pm CST. We have real conversations, current events, interviews with folks that are on the same page in regards to finding Love within and aren’t afraid of Change. There is a movement taking place. There is a wordless message that is motivating us all to want more of what’s real for ourselves. And while we are

feeling empowered there are things that we hear or witness that remind us that our feelings can still get hurt. While this is true it is more so what we do with that hurt than the fact that we feel pain. This realization is part of the process of Loving Oneself Naturally. I think about times I have witnessed or consoled someone whom words were been used to hurt them through ridicule of how they looks or what they don’t have. We must spend more time nurturing our transition rather than tearing apart someone else’s pursuit of happiness. Hair is a hot topic. While some are in celebration some are in complete depression behind their hair. How did this all begin? When and where did we lose interest in our hair as it is when it graces our scalp naturally. And why are lines to be crossed with those whom are natural and those whom are not? We are all women blessed with attributes of beauty. We are beauty. We come in many shapes, shades and sizes. What causes us not to lend some advice to another who clearly needs guidance with their hair or anything else? What

(214) 941-0110

causes us to not compliment when we see someone with beautiful hair. At Love A Natural Me on Cheryl’s World, we are CurlFriends (naturalistas, natural hair mamas, etc.) and we speak about a variety of things. This show is MORE than a conversation about Hair. Our show promotes the celebration of loving your natural self. Being happy with your uniqueness. Don’t get me wrong... if you love being able to change your look up with coloring, a wig or a weave - this is no problem. Unless, you do it to cover up instead of as an adornment. I welcome all types of dialog from food, lifestyles, relationships, health, wellness AND natural hair. The rhythm of the show is balanced, healthy, natural living For way too long straight hair images have been the accepted ‘standard of beauty’. WE can change this perception one beautiful head of texture at a time. I believe God designed each of us right in our natural state! HE doesn’t make mistakes.

Yvette Brooks is a natural woman, sister, wife and mother of 3 (biologically anyway). She is a lover of the arts in many forms while working from home as a web-mistress and social media manager.

Paul Quinn holds deferred action workshop

Paul Quinn College will present “Working Towards a Greater WE Legally: A Deferred Action Workshop” on April 2, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. on campus at 3837 Simpson Stuart Rd. in the Grand Lounge. The presenter will be Kendrea Tannis, the founding dean of the Work Program at Paul Quinn College. “This is an opportunity for community members to learn about the Deferred Action Program, which affects millions of families across cultures,” said Tannis. “Paul Quinn College is working to ensure that all students, regardless of their legal statuses, are presented with opportunities to better themselves by furthering their education. In the Quinnite Nation we believe in working towards a greater WE.” Paul Quinn’s institutional ethos is WE Over Me. "This is another example of our brand of

servant leadership" said Michael Sorrell, Esq., president of Paul Quinn. "A number of our students and their families are affected by this legislation and the other issues surrounding immigration reform. We are proud to support their efforts to qualify for residency and citizenship." In June 2012, the Obama administration announced a program officially titled, “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.” Under the program, the Department of Homeland Security agreed to grant undocumented young people a renewable twoyear work authorization and reprieve from deportation. It is estimated that more than 1.4 million young people could qualify for Deferred Action; and as of August 2012, the Department of Homeland Security began accepting applications. If candidates meet the specified criteria, they are issued a social security card,

which acts as their temporary work authorization, and reprieve from deportation. Recipients of Deferred Action must apply for a renewal of their documents every two years. In many states, including Texas, acquisition of the social security card also makes it possible for recipients to obtain a driver’s license. Though not a path to residency or citizenship, the Deferred Action program gives many undocumented young people and official protected “status” in the United States. The Work Program at Paul Quinn College is one component of an innovative educational model that helps students get real-world work experience by working in campus offices and departments as employees while reducing their student debt. Modelled after the country’s seven federal work colleges, Paul Quinn is looking to become the eighth work college by 2014.

ry covers a broad, diverse area, as opposed to one populated primarily by members of a certain ethnic or religious group. Although not specifically identified in the Fair Housing Act, anyone who shows, sells, owns, manages, or offers mortgage services for housing properties might consider providing reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities and language assistance for persons with limited English proficiency in keeping with the spirit of the Act. The vast majority of professionals in the housing industry are honest, law-abiding men and women who are well aware of fair housing issues. But it is important to learn and recognize discrimination. Ultimately, knowledge is your best tool to avoiding discrimination. There are multiple facets to the Fair Housing Act and all Texans should be familiar with their rights under the laws of this state and country. But don’t wait until you start your housing search. Fair housing violations — just like Fair Housing Month — can sneak up on you before you know it.

Beer Can Baseball is available now for pre-ordering at $20 per game (which includes shipping) through a Kickstarter. com program launched today at www. BeerCanBaseball.com/Kickstarter. All games are scheduled for shipment by the All-Star break in July of 2013. “We’ve chosen to launch Beer Can Baseball on Kickstarter.com to involve the widest range of fans in our startup,” says Tom Miller, a co-inventor of the game. “Kickstarter.com will help us spread the word and allow fans of the game to back our product launch with pre-order. “The original Beer Can Baseball prototype was introduced earlier as a product test. That limited edition Inaugural Season version is still available for a limited time on Kickerstarter.com. Both games are simple, fun and enhance the overall professional baseball game experience.”

Miller explains that the games can be played in the home or at social settings such as pubs and restaurants, college dormitories and parties --- anywhere that live baseball games are being broadcast. “Beer Can Baseball is not a drinking game,” says Miller. “The name of the game originated when co-founder Craig Fogel and I were sitting around at home watching a low-scoring baseball game several years ago while enjoying a few beers. We were trying to figure out a way to make the game more fun for us and started predicting what the hitters and pitchers would do. From that was born the original version of Beer Can Baseball!” Test marketed in Cooperstown, N.Y., the home of baseball, Beer Can Baseball comes to the plate in conjunction with the launch of the 2013 Major League Baseball season.

International, continued from page 2 and has gone to rest with his maker. We ask for prayers at this most trying time for the Awolowo family and for the ANN Plc.” Reacting to his demise, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, described Awolowo’s death as a big pain and loss to followers of the sage, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, In a statement by its publicity secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere said: “The entire Afenifere family mourns the passing away of the scion of our illustrious leader’s family, Chief Oluwole Awolowo. His death is a big pain and loss to all of us who are followers of the sage. “We pray that the Almighty will strengthen our Mama and the entire family in this difficult moment. May his amiable soul rest in perfect peace.” Also, former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, described the death of Awolowo as a sad and painful loss, even as he prayed to God to grant Mama HID Awolowo the strength to bear the irreparable loss in her old age. “Oluwole was a gentle personality and a brilliant man, who loved people and affected his environment positively. He was one from a great family of excellent political tradition and his life and contributions would not be forgotten in a hurry,” he said. Tinubu also prayed that God grant the entire Awolowo clan the fortitude to bear the painful loss. “They must not despair, but must be strong for Mama and above all take solace in the fact that he lived a memorable and fulfilled life,” Tinubu said. Amosun, in a condolence message, described the death of Awolowo as a sad occurrence, which has thrown the entire state into mourning. The governor, in the statement by his media aide, Mrs. Funmi Wakama, said the fact that the late Awolowo was survived by his mother, Mrs. Hannah Awolowo, the revered matriarch of the family who is seen by all Nigerians as a symbol of Nigerian nationalism, made his death even more painful. “We are surprised to hear about the sudden departure of the Publisher of Tribune titles who was not only the son of our late sage but was himself a major political figure, going by the prominent role he played in the Second Republic when he served meritoriously as a legislator in the Lagos State House of Assembly. “The entire people of Ogun state mourn the

departure of this illustrious son of our dear state. Our condolences go to the entire Awolowo family, particularly our dear mama, Chief (Mrs.) H.I.D. Awolowo. We pray that God Almighty will console and strengthen them at this time of grief. We also pray that God should grant the dead eternal rest,” Amosun said. Born in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on December 3, 1942, Oluwole was the third child and second son of his parents. At age 12, Oluwole joined the youth wing of the NCNC, the political party led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, which was a rival party to his father’s Action Group (AG). This was later interpreted as not an act of rebellion, but freedom of expression which his father would later admire in his son. From Ibadan Grammar School, he proceeded to Leighton Park School, Reading, Berdshire in England for further studies. He was admitted to Leeds College of Commerce where he graduated in Business Studies in the early 1960s. After a successful sojourn abroad, he returned to Nigeria where he picked up a managerial work at the Nigerian Tobacco Company, Ibadan, and later, the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation and the Nigerian Television Service, Lagos. But following his father’s incarceration and the death of his older brother, Segun, in 1963, Oluwole went into active politics and became a member of the United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA). With the emergence of the military on the Nigerian political landscape in 1966, he veered off completely from politics to focus fully on business. But he was later to return when he won his first elective office in 1975 as a councillor representing Apapa in the then Lagos City Council. In 1979, he was the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly, also representing Apapa Constituency. He won a landslide victory and remained a member of the House of Assembly till 1983 when the military struck. *******
