Mesquite proposes $23 million Galloway Avenue improvements The Mesquite City Council has approved the concepts for a $23 million reconstruction of North Galloway Avenue from U.S. Highway 80 to Belt Line Road. It is one of three projects for submission by Mesquite for Dallas County’s 6th Major Capital Improvement Program (MCIP). Dallas County will choose projects for the MCIP in March 2013. The 2.7-mile project will feature a 10-foot pedestrian trail, wide sidewalks and on-street bike lanes as well as drainage system improvements and new traffic signals at major intersections. Some portions of this stretch of Galloway Avenue have an average use of
25,000 vehicles per day. If the project is included in the MCIP, Mesquite will share $12.2 million of the costs with Dallas County. Those costs will be funded through a combination sources, including the Mesquite Quality of Life funds, water/sewer/drainage funds and Certificates of Obligation bonds. Construction could begin by 2017. Assistant City Manager Jerry Dittman said, “These plans will change the character of a main road into and through Mesquite. It will capture the most current ideas on creating a sense of place.” Dittman went onto explain the project will hopefully transform the road’s purpose from simply

LAST WORD
Not another business closing! While the number of small businesses has increased exponentially over the past four years; there have been some casualties. Unfortunately, however some of the businesses that have shut their doors have not done so because of poor customer service, inferior products or bad consumer reports. Many of those businesses manage to hang in there, as if folks like being treated poorly and paying for it. So, it is especially hard when a business that provides excellent customer service, quality products and a smile for every customer, closes its doors. Such is the case with Jokae’s African American Books, Art and Custom Framing, located in southern Dallas County on Camp Wisdom Road, across from Southwest Center Mall (just in case you’ve never frequented the establishment). In a recent email, it was disclosed that Jokae’s would be closing in October. Sure it was a hard decision for the Petits Family. They have shown time and time again that they understand the need for a business such as Jokae’s. When one of their counterparts, Black Images Book Bazaar closed a few years back after nearly three decades of service, Jokae’s was very supportive and continued to try and serve this market, even though they were going up against the big corporate giants and a slave mentality that was more content with finding every excuse possible to shop elsewhere. Much like Black Images, Jokae’s owners have given so much to this community and to authors. The Pettis Family, worked tirelessly to provide a venue for new and seasoned writers to hold their booksignings and showcase their works. Sure we’ve had some economic times but some of the choices we have made could have helped save some very important businesses, like Jokae's. From this point on until the doors close for the last time, Jokae’s will probably do more business in a month than they did all this year. Thankfully we still have Pan African Connection Bookstore and Resource Center and the bookstore at the African American Museum in Dallas and in Fort Worth, there’s Dock Bookshop. These establishments are so important to our community.. It’s time re-examine what’s really important in our lives and communities and begin making wiser decisions. Jokae’s deserved more support; as do our other establishments. The owners have been good corporate citizens. They have supported our schools and organizations, but still the reciprocity has not been as it should have been. And now, we will feel the loss!

JOURNAL Established 2002
Are Republicans causing high unemployment? The unemployment rate has hovered above 8 percent for several months, most recently holding ground at 8.2 percent, the same as last month. Meanwhile the African American unemployment rate went up, technically to 14.4 percent, and we all know that means the real rate is even higher, in excess of 25 percent. Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney interrupted his vacation to gloat about the number of Americans who are experiencing misery, and his gloating might be at least somewhat amusing were this not the same man who says he likes to fire people. The 8.2 percent unemployment is not in President Obama’s best interest. Many who are feeling the misery and pain are open to an alternative, even if it is one as muddled and confused as Mr. Romney who doesn’t support health care reform, but pushed a plan similar to the one President Obama passed. This man has so talked out of his mouth, that a simple reel of his contradictory quotes would make it clear how confused, or deliberately deceiving he is. The good news for President Obama is that the lower the unemployment rate goes, the better his chances for reelection. The better news for President Obama is that many people don’t snap into campaign mode until after Labor Day. People want jobs, to be sure, but the summer numbers even if they are level, don’t alarm everyone. The employment reports that our president has to pay the most attention to are those released September 7 and October 5. This is when Republicans will get all cranked up and suggest that President Obama can’t handle the fractured economy he inherited. Can the unemployment rate drop? Well if Republicans would pass the American Jobs Act, an actual plan for employment, it might. It is in the

interest of the nation’s unemployed, but not in the interest of Republican chicanery, for the American Jobs Act to be passed. In some ways, Republicans are starving their constituents to thwart President Obama. Similarly, when state and local governments have to lay people off because their budgets are tight, the federal government has previously stepped in to help. Part of the recovery funds went to state and local governments, some who turned the money down in the interest of fiscal conservatism. There the Republicans go again, hurting their constituents to thwart President Obama. Part of the reason Republicans can get away with this is because no one is pressuring them. Just like the Tea Party has pushed these people to the right, somebody needs to push them back to center. The Tea Party has virtually obliterated the notion of a moderate Republican, but there must be some out there, and what has to happen is that somebody needs to push back. The African American community has to push too. While few of us are Republicans, many of us live in districts with Republican representation. These representatives need to hear from us, and from our neighbors, not always African American. And these representatives need to hear from our mayors, not always Democratic, who can pressure them to do the right thing by cities. Meanwhile, Republicans fiddle while Rome burns because no one has called them on it. Whenever Mr. Romney says President Obama has no plan, somebody needs to remind him of the American Jobs Act. Whenever Mr. Romney starts babbling about health care, someone ought to throw Massachusetts in his face. And when the braying bunch of bobbleheads who call themselves the Tea Party get worked up over the economy, we need to ask them, how many people in your family are unemployed; how much Social Security does your mama have, don’t your kids have student loans, does everyone in your family have health care. Fueled by race matters and rhetoric, working class white people are organized for Romney, someone who would cut education, health care, and Social Security and put those “savingsâ€? into military spending and tax cuts for the wealthy. In other words, and not for the first time, working class white people are working against their own economic interests. Meanwhile, if House Republicans want to move an economic agenda that helps some 14 million unemployed people, perhaps they can see their way clear to pass the American Jobs Act. We don’t need all the Republicans, maybe just a third of them, and I’ll wager that perhaps that many have sense enough to see that which their leader, John Boehner (R-OH) does not. In any case, let’s make it plain. The unemployment rate is stagnant because Republicans have failed to act. Curry: Clarence Thomas worse than a member of the KKK As the nation eagerly awaited the Supreme Court’s decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, all eyes were focused on Anthony M. Kennedy, a staunch conservative who George E. Curry occasionally supplies the lone swing vote that tilts the court’s narrow 5-4 rulings in one direction or the other.
rise, and Thomas has alternately denied it and resented it – all the way to the top.” To characterize Thomas’ behavior as resentment is an understatement. The late U.S. Appeals Court Judge Leon Higginbotham observed, “I have often pondered how is it that Justice Thomas, an African-American, could be so insensitive to the plight of the powerless. Why is he no different, or probably worse, than many of the most conservative Supreme Court justices of the century? I can only think of one Supreme Court justice during the century who was worse than Justice Clarence Thomas: James McReynolds, a white supremacist who referred to blacks as ‘niggers.’”
But this time, to the surprise of archconservatives who had championed his cause, Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. sided with the liberal bloc on the Supreme Court, giving President Obama an unexpected clear victory in his signature legislative accomplishment. What was not surprising was that Clarence Thomas would not step into the role filled by Roberts. He is widely regarded as the most conservative member of a conservativedominated Supreme Court. Thomas is far more conservative that Hugo Black, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan who served on the court from 1937-1971. Black, a former U.S. Senator from Alabama (he once filibustered an anti-lynching bill) joined the KKK in the early 1920s. In fact, during the 1926 election, he gave speeches at KKK meetings throughout the state. Black later acknowledged that joining the Klan was a mistake and became one of the most liberal members of the Supreme Court, strongly backing the principle of “one man, one vote” and using the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment to forbid racial discrimination. No such luck with Clarence Thomas.
Carter back from the Republican National Convention
Though arguably the worst, Thomas is by no means the only African American who votes against the interests of his community. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
In every major case involving affirmative action – including Texas v. Hopwood, Adarand v. Pena and Grutter v. Bollinger – Thomas voted against the interests of African Americans. What makes that so strange is that Thomas has benefited from affirmative action throughout his adult life. In their excellent book, Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas, Kevin Merida and Michael A. Fletcher, two colleagues at the Washington Post, write: “Every Thomas employer, from [Former Missouri Sen. John] Danforth, who gave him his first job, to President George H.W. Bush, who nominated him to the Supreme Court, chose Thomas at least partly because he is black. Race is a central fact of his meteoric
Longtime Alabama State Senator Hank Sanders challenged Davis tactics. “Some Whites use race to consolidate White voters during election and some Blacks use race to consolidate Black voters,” Sanders wrote in his newsletter, Senate Sketches. “But this time, there is a new context: a technically well qualified Black person is running for Governor of Alabama in the Democratic Primary against a technically well qualified
The saga did not end well for Davis, who has since joined the Republican Party. He lost 10 of the 12 counties that made up his congressional district, some by as much as 70 percent. He even lost his own polling place in Birmingham. And let’s not forget Edolphus Towns, the Democratic Congressman from Brooklyn. Though Towns did not vote for a civil contempt citation against Attorney General Eric Holder, he took a more cowardly approach by voting present. We should not be surprised. This is the same person who supported Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama in 2008. Before that, he backed Republican Rudy Giuliani for mayor over Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messenger. Fortunately, Towns is not seeking re-election. When I look at Clarence Thomas, Artur Davis, Edolphus Towns and others we should hold in contempt, I think back to what Thurgood Marshall said about Clarence Thomas: “There’s no difference between a white snake and a black snake. They’ll both bite.” George E. COVER STORY
Natural Diva Y v e t t e
B r o o k s
By Cheryl Smith Garland Journal
Yvette Brooks Turner is really a supermom! She’s focused and committed as she takes care of her family and grows her business. Born in the Philippines, she came to the U.S. when she was five years old and was raised in San Diego, CA. Although she has lived in Texas for just about three years, even as a child she spent “every” summer in Texas and now calls the Lone Star State and more specifically, the Garland area, “home.” In addition to being the distributor of Wheatgrass Coffee and radio talk show host, Yvette is an astute business woman who is a “self-made Social Media Manager.” “Social Media is thriving at this time and as you know it is a must and need for anyone,” she said. “Not everyone has time to do it and still create, produce, offer services AND be active in the Social Media world. “This is where I come in. Social Media is always changing, growing, expanding so I consider myself one who stays open so that I may remain flexible and up to date with these changes while YOU run your business.” She’s also running her own business, along with her husband, William. Between the two, they have numerous irons in the fire, in addition to raising three children. And actually this year, there was a major change in the lifestyles of Yvette’s family. As the summer came to a close, her children went to the school for the first time. Talk about an anxious mother. Yvette and William had been responsible for shaping her children’s minds and now they were turning some of the responsibility over to the public school system.
T u r n e r
Describing herself as somewhat fanatical, she explained her decision to homeschool, “There are a lot of things that society or the world has been built on that I didn't want my children to be programmed by. I realized that the only way around that is to arm them with the necessary tools to discern what is real or true and what is not and to have a genuine love for themselves and people--most importantly black people or people that are other than white.” There came a time, however that the couple felt their children were ready to go out into the world and experience their parents’ tax dollars at work. “I had to transition from homeschool in order for them to function properly in a place where they would eventually be exposed to other then what I have taught them., Yvette explained. “It was hard to let go and let this happen. However, I have found that it is one of the best decisions I have made.” She also said she found that her three children adapted immediately and are enjoying their new “adventure.” So now with the children at school during the day, and William usually out and about, taking care of business, Yvette is home, but not completely alone. Instead of an assistant to help her with clients and projects, she has the company of the family dog, Howie. Known for her pleasing personality, Yvette says she is especially grateful for her “extremely supportive husband and children.” In her spare time, when she’s not servicing her steadily increasing client base; she enjoys spending time with her family, laughing hard and enjoying the outdoors.” Then it’s back to work and helping someone grow their business is something she enjoys immensely, especially if it involves the
Internet. She knows that a website is the equivalent of yesteryear’s business card. If you are in business, you need to be technologically connected. “Not everyone has time to do their own social media and still create, produce, offer services while being active in the Social Media world,” she said, adding, that’s where she comes in. “I also assist women who would like to find legal options to bring in income other than the traditional 9 to 5.” Deeply rooted in Health and Wellness Yvette has been living a lifestyle of staying abreast of healthy living and making sure that she consumes healthy food, products and thought. “This has been my life since 1996. While I have been vegan, vegetarian and raw for many years, I have found that moderation in all things work best for me and my family,” she said, admitting that she is a work in progress and continuing to evolve. “I am no longer a fanatic pushing my views and food choices on others. This realization
has brought me balance and many, many friends to reach out to and has opened the door to the natural hair community which I am just in love with--women and children celebrating the fact that The Creator didn't make any mistakes with me or you.” A conversation with Yvette is more than interesting. She’s the social butterfly of social media and her clients are reaping the benefits of her skillful navigation whether she’s tweeting, linking, updating, mingling, blogging, poking, friending and more! LIFESTYLE Ask Gwendolyn Baines
I give my son money in exchange for good grades. Boyfriend disagrees!
LaShirl Smith
On Tuesday, September 11th, local area celebrities and athletes will gather to walk the Red Carpet and attend the Premiere for the indie film, “Sideline Confessions.” The Premiere will take place at the Angelika Film Center located at 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane in Dallas. Red Carpet arrivals are from 6:15pm-7:15pm, with the premiere beginning at 7:30pm. The film centers around top-level marketing executive Candy Boudreaux (portrayed by newcomer, Frankie Blair) as she tackles her biggest campaign when she decides to pursue star football player Eric Whitaker (Eric Window,) for her own personal satisfaction. But Candy quickly becomes sidelined when she becomes intertwined into the unknown sports world of parties, blackmail and sexual games, all just to be with Eric. Supporting cast includes Kisha Grandy-Alexis (Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad”), Trantario Jones (“Urban Justice”),
Bubba Ganter (“Our Family Wedding”) among others. This marks the film debut of Dallas native LaShirl Smith, who decided to return home last year to shoot the project and use local area talent. Bringing 'Hollywood' to Dallas was very important to Ms. Smith. "I wanted to be able to give local actors an opportunity to show their talent", she explains. “There is a lot of good talent in the area and I wanted Hollywood to take notice.” Ms. Smith says she is ecstatic with the response and support she has received from family, friends and peers. “Everyone has been so supportive and the cast was tremendous to work with.”
It Has Begun! Legendary multi-platinum country artist Collin Raye tells everyone everywhere he goes, “Imaj is country’s next big star!” What makes Imaj such an amazing anomaly is that her mission has always been simply, “Peace & Love” — a movement that has been advocated since The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin and Michael Jackson…then along came Imaj to continue the Peace Movement.
Local area celebrities and athletes will be in attendance including players from the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks as well as several TV and Radio personalities. Ms. Smith, who is a top sports and entertainment publicist in Los Angeles, moved away more than 25 years ago with the dreams of becoming a successful screenwriter. “This is only the beginning, Dallas is a great production market and has a lot to offer to indie filmmakers such as myself,” she explains. Besides the film, she will begin production on a variety of other projects including several reality shows, a sports television drama and will continue to work as a publicist.
What makes this so great is that Team Imaj has begun to expand her mission to not only spread world peace but to spread the awareness of Imaj and make the world a better place. You’ve heard the Breaking News: “IMAJ: Self-Titled Debut Album Set To Release This Summer/Fall!” We can’t wait for the release! And now…we’re joining hands nationwide. Dear Gwendolyn: My 14 year old son, like a lot of children, find school boring, which caused his grades to drop. A month ago, I made a promise to my son that every good grade he brings home, I will give him five dollars. Within one month’s time, he has already collected $25 from me. I’m proud of his accomplishments and I see the pride that has built up in him. However, my boyfriend is upset with me because of the way I am going about getting him to improve. Although, I believe in my heart there is nothing wrong with awarding a child. Gwendolyn, please let me know your thoughts. A Confused Mother Dear Confused Mother: First of all, let me say, “You’re not confused. You are only a concerned mother, and I truly congratulate you for taking an interest in your child.” Because your son is 14 and not 4, I believe you are on the right track. When children are very young, they can easily think that being awarded for something will forever be a way of their life - to later discover that theory to be untrue. Your boyfriend may not understand, so don’t upset yourself with his thoughts. There is something I want you to do: Take your son to dinner at an upscale restaurant. Since the beginning of daycare centers, allowing both parents to work, children have gotten the short end of the stick. I mean – not enough quality time with mom and dad. While you are dining with your son, let him know the money you are giving could become depleted. Too many knowledgeable boys and girls stop their education and are forced to work at pennies on the dollar for life. While dining show him a copy of job salaries. After he views pay differentials for school dropouts compared to careers of higher learning, he will know that his “greatest” award will be to achieve an education. Think about it. That award can only be given to him ---from him. Gwendolyn Baines is a nationally renown author and lecturer, who in the last few years has added "syndicated advice columnist" to her lengthy credentials list.

DCCCD Muse scholarship recipients exhibit potential and determination Dallas) – Thirteen area community college students who demonstrate leadership potential and the determination to succeed have been named 2012-2013 Muse scholarship recipients by the Dallas County Community College District Foundation. The recipients also are selected on the basis of their focused educational goals and work ethic, along with proven leadership skills and academic achievement. Initiated and funded by longtime DCCCD Foundation supporters Lyn and John Muse of Dallas, the Muse Scholars Program pays for each scholar’s college costs at DCCCD – including tuition, books and additional fees – to meet the requirements of his or her certification program or degree. Recipients may receive the Muse scholarship for up to six consecutive semesters. “Determination and potential are key characteristics we look for in our Muse scholars,” said Betheny Reid, associate vice chancellor of development and president of the DCCCD Foundation. “Lyn and John Muse believe in those traits, as well as a strong work ethic and clear educational goals. “Each recipient exhibits those characteristics, and we are excited to have them as students at DCCCD. They are future leaders, and we hope to help them reach their educational and professional goals. This year’s new Muse scholars, their home towns, colleges and intended majors, are: • Mussie Abraha Abed of Richardson, El Centro College, nursing; • Everardo Amaya of Dallas, Eastfield College, renewable and sustainable energy;

Its Monday! Share the story of your HBCU experience with a colleague or friend over a nice cup of coffee or tea this can be done while at work or over the phone (or even via Facebook and Ttwitter). This gives each of us the opportunity to share the validity and importance of HBCU’s. 9/25- Reconnect with a friend
We all know at least one person who graduated from our home institution and never looked back. Today, schedule a time to meet with the friend over lunch, drinks, shopping, etc. During this time be sure to share your experience with your local chapter or the DMCBAA and encourage your friend to be involved. 9/26- Midweek Reflection
Take time today to reflect on how your experience at and HBCU has changed your life, write it down- struggles and success.
