GARLAND As Garland ISD prepares for Superintendent Curtis Culwell’s retirement in December, the Board of Trustees announced an interim at Tuesday night’s work session in the Harris Hill Administration Building. Gary Reeves, assistant superintendent of administration, will lead the district until Culwell’s replacement is named. “Dr. Reeves is a longtime employee and administrator of Garland ISD,” said Board President Linda Griffin. “His tenure here and strong leadership ability make him a perfect choice for interim superintendent. “The Board and I are confident that Dr. Reeves will continue to lead the district in the right direction as we finish our superintendent search.” Reeves joined the district in 1969 after teaching and coaching for four years in Dallas ISD. Let’s save our sons

America is dealing with several crises and Dr. Steve Perry is doing great things for our young men on TV One’s hit show, “Save My Son. Sure he’s been focusing on running schools and that is where many first heard of him Dr. Steve Perry as “America’s Most Wanted Educator. The founder of Capital Preparatory Magnet School and CNN Education Contributor, Dr. Perry is also the author of the bestselling “Push Has Come to Shove. If you want to find out what’s wrong with our schools, you need to read what this educator has to say about what “steps need to be taken to ensure that all schools, whether urban or suburban, deliver a first rate education to our children. If anyone knows what to do, it has to be Dr. Perry. Among his many accomplishments, the no-nonsense, no excuses Dr. Perry established Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut’s lowest performing district and he proudly notes that since the inception of the school, 100% of its graduates go on to four-year colleges. If that fact alone is not impressive enough, prior to establishing the magnet school, his program ConnCAP, for six years prior sent 100% of its low-income, first generation graduates to fouryear colleges. The man is doing something right and for a glimpse at what makes him so successful, you have to check out TV One to see him in action on “Save My Son. While he is dealing with specific family situations, so many families can benefit from his expertise. Many of the issues are ones we have heard about or dealt with in our own families so Dr. Perry is helping more than just a specific week’s family. He cares and it shows as he candidly deals with the entire family in his efforts to save young men. Much of the blame for our sons’ behavior can be placed solely on the shoulders of parents and adults, notes Dr. Perry. “An overwhelming majority (of young black boys) feel like they don’t belong to anybody, said Dr. Perry, adding that he viewed the show as a “call to action. The sons are in gangs, abusive to their mothers, getting high, looking for love, and possibly headed for disaster, prison or death. The pain the parents, especially the mothers, are feeling is contagious. Dr. Perry works at helping and healing the entire family. Accountability is key! Thanks to Dr. Perry some young men are getting a chance to turn their lives around and that will help make this world a better place.

CURRY: Obama should thank Jesse Jackson

George E. Curry

President Obama’s campaign strategists are receiving a lot of richly deserved praise in the wake of the president’s victory over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on Nov. 6. Obama, who lost the majority of the White vote for the second time, won the election by assembling a progressive Democratic coalition pioneered by Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988. I covered Jackson’s 1984 campaign for the Chicago Tribune and witnessed Jackson laying the groundwork for what would become two Obama victories. “America is not like a blanket – one piece of unbroken cloth, the same color, the same texture, the same size,â€? MORIAL: A letter to President Obama Marc H. Morial sent the following letter to President Obama, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Speaker John Boehner outlining the Urban League’s policy priorities for the next four years:

Dear Mr. President, Rep. Pelosi, and Speaker Boehner, The National Urban League congratulates each of you on your victory, and offers its support as, together, you lead the country into the next four years. We write respectfully to share our urgent petition that a second term agenda focus on the issues of economic opportunity and income inequality. While we recognize that the country has been brought from the brink of economic disaster; and job growth has been steady and consistent, we believe that job creation, economic development and economic empowerment are the most important issues facing our great nation. Accordingly, we urge the following: First, that a comprehensive jobs program be developed and executed by way of a partnership that includes government, the private sector and the nation’s non-profit

community. This partnership must emphasize is a great untapped potential in these citizens infrastructure and public works, that must be unleashed to power broadband technology and the economic recovery. energy, with a special focus on those communities where Third, the scourge of unemployment is and remains gun violence cries out for a stubbornly and persistently comprehensive new approach high. These enhancements can come from reforms to the tax code, including the closing of special interest loopholes, and adjustments to marginal tax rates. We who represent the nation’s urban communities will demand a seat at the table in these discussions, and we are prepared to engage fully with our team of economic and policy experts. The American people spoke loudly last evening and, in my view, want all parties to put the business of the people first in a spirit of American patriotism and unity rather than resorting to ideological, divisive agendas. While there are many issues that you must confront, we believe those outlined above are the most important facing the nation and urge that they form the centerpiece of your second term domestic agenda. MALVEAUX: U.S. needs to invest in education The Olympic games are a celebration of excellence and athleticism. Whether we are cheering the Williams sisters in their gold medalwinning doubles match, or Serena Dr. Julianne Malveaux with her gold, or the graceful Gabby Douglass in flight, or some of the many others, we are cheering their excellence, their indomitable spirits, their drive. We are also acknowledging the tens of thousands of hours that they must have put into practice. Even as we cheer, there are lessons for each of us, both individually and in a social policy context. We’ve all heard, time and time again, “get out there and do it”, or “just do it” or “I worked hard for this.” Often the difference between a gold and silver winner is the one was hungrier, wanted the gold more intensely, and worked harder than the other. To be sure, some Olympians have good days, and others have days that are less than good. But there is no such thing as “luck” in the Olympics. Luck is the collision of preparation and opportunity. Was Gabby Douglas lucky to have been taken on by Liang Chow the coach that

trained her to earn the gold? No, she was sacrifices, and an insufficient investment, prepared to shine in a way that made Chow for the cause of education. How many are willing to fight for afterschool and summer programs, or provide tutoring. More importantly, how many are willing to change the policy les through which we view educational issues, insisting that our legislators address issues of education. There is an anti-tax lobby, led by Grover Norquist of the Americans for Tax Reform, that will not endorse candidates unless they pledge not to raise taxes, and the Tea Party that is so effective that they are unseating Republican stalwarts. Might a group of education advocates come together to develop power as formidable as that of the Tea Party? Might that group decided that any legislator that cannot support a robust educational agenda, is unworthy of reelection. Might we have the will to assert that all children can learn, and then make their learning a priority? We will get what we invest in and, unfortunately, we aren’t investing enough in education. Ask Gwen

I give my son money in exchange for good grades. Boyfriend disagrees!

www.texasmetronews.com from me. I’m proud of his accomplishments and I see the pride that has built up in him. However, my boyfriend is upset with me because of the way I am going about getting him to improve. Although, I believe in my heart there is nothing wrong with awarding a child. Gwendolyn, please let me know your thoughts.

A Confused Mother Dear Confused Mother:

Dear Gwendolyn: My 14 year old son, like a lot of children, find school boring, which caused his grades to drop. A month ago, I made a promise to my son that every good grade he brings home, I will give him five dollars. Within one month’s time, he has already collected $25

First of all, let me say, “You’re not confused. You are only a concerned mother, and I truly congratulate you for taking an interest in your child.” Because your son is 14 and not 4, I believe you are on the right track. When children are very young, they can easily think that being awarded for something will forever be a way of their life - to later discover that theory to be untrue.

Your boyfriend may not understand, so don’t upset yourself with his thoughts. There is something I want you to do: Take your son to dinner at an upscale restaurant. Since the beginning of daycare centers, allowing both parents to work, children have gotten the short end of the stick. I mean – not enough quality time with mom and dad. While you are dining with your son, let him know the money you are giving could become depleted. Too many knowledgeable boys and girls stop their education and are forced to work at pennies on the dollar for life. While dining show him a copy of job salaries. After he views pay differentials for school dropouts compared to careers of higher learning, he will know that his “greatest” award will be to achieve an education. Think about it. That award can only be given to him ---from him. Gwendolyn Baines is an author, lecturer and syndicated advice columnist. The “Ask Gwendolyn Baines” advice column is distributed by the National Newspaper Publishers’ Association. (NNPA)-Washington, D.C.

HEALTH Something Natural by Deborah Chambers

Aromatic Compresses Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to help the body heal itself. Essential oils are the natural extracts obtained from aromatic plants. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and should be used with care or under the direction of a Certified Aromatherapist. They have anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, as well as anti-bacterial properties to name a few. Aromatherapy is widely recognized as an extremely effective form of complementary medicine, and is in no way intended to replace the treatment of a licensed medical practitioner. The body utilizes aromatherapy in two ways: 1) through the sense of smell and the olfactory organ, and 2) by dermal absorption of the body’s largest organ – the skin. A good aromatic soak in the tub using Epsom salt and an essential oil or oil blend will relieve tired achy muscles. However, soaking in a bath may not always be convenient or even possible. The aromatic compress is an alternative to soaking the whole body, as well as an excellent approach to natural healing. Swollen areas of the body such as ankles or knees can be reduced with a cool aromatic compress. The pain of strained or achy muscles can be relieved with a warm aromatic compress. Stress and tension can also be alleviated with an aromatic compress. The issue and area of distress determines the water temperature and steps of preparation for an aromatic compress. Adjust water temperature before adding essential oils. Always consult the advice of a Certified Aromatherapist, when unsure. For areas of the body, the steps are as follows: 1) in a large bowl, pour 4 to 6 cups of water; 2) add 5 to 7 drops of an essential oil or an essential oil blend to water and mix with hand; 3) dip a hand towel in the bowl and let soak for a few seconds; 4) remove the cloth and squeeze out excess moisture; 5) apply to affected area. For the face/ forehead/ neck areas (e.g. for headaches), the steps are as follows: 1) in a small bowl, pour 1 to 2 cups of water; 2) add 1 to 3 drops of an essential oil or an essential oil blend to water and mix with hand; 3) carefully dip a small face cloth in the bowl; 4) gently squeeze out the excess moisture and apply to face (avoid the eye area). The aromatic compress is a perfect complement to healing. It is completely natural and utilizes the therapeutic properties of aromatic plants to strengthen and heal. Naturally Divine Beauty is a full-fledged beauty store supply and natural hair salon at 3556 Forest Lane in Dallas. It is the first of its kind in North Texas. “Natural hair is not a fad, it’s a choice,” said Audra Cooper, the owner of Naturally Divine Beauty. The popularity of natural hairstyles has spawned a crop of specialty beauty parlors throughout the region, and shifted the economic balance of the $185 million black hair-care market. Cooper moved the store to

its new location from a kiosk at Grapevine Mills Malls after the space became too small to handle the increase demand for products. The 1,500 square foot store and salon is a beauty boutique filled with carefully selected high-end products made by African-American owned companies popping up to meet the high demands of natural products made specifically for natural hair. The salon offers an array of services including Twist Outs, Creative Cuts, Flat Irons, Blow outs and more! Naturally Divine has over 25 options of natural hair care and beauty products. Most products are sulfate-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and free of harsh chemicals. Women with

relaxed and naturally textured hair can use the products. Some of the product brands include, Carol’s Daughter, Kinky Curly, Uncle Funky’s Daughter, Curly Junkie, Mixed Chicks and many more. Cooper has joined a growing number of African-Americanowned companies catering to natural hair enthusiasts. Companies that once marketed

Bond. James Bond. These three simple words of dialogue have been synonymous with the world’s smoothest international spy since the character first came to life fifty years ago on the big screen in DR. NO. The often-imitated phrase rises to the occasion once again in the latest Bond movie — SKYFALL. Released in theaters nationwide in the U.S. on November 9, 2012, SKYFALL is Ian Fleming’s 23rd installment in what just might be the best James Bond flick in the franchise’s long-running history. The film had a record-breaking opening weekend in the U.S., grossing a whopping $87.8 million. Directed by Sam Mendes and written by John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, SKYFALL pays tribute to all things classic Agent 007. From the gripping action scenes to the seduction of the film’s head-turning “it” girl to the cameo appearance by Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 outfitted with

commanded by M to take the shot. Agent Moneypenny pulls the trigger. End spoiler alert here. Cue obligatory, artistic opening montage set to the film’s official theme song by the same title, “Skyfall” performed by six-time Grammy winner, Adele. If there is to be any legitimate criticism of this film it could be argued that the third act was a tad bit too long, perhaps drawn out by what felt like extraneous action scenes at times. However, Mendes, an AcademyAward winner (Best Director, AMERICAN BEAUTY in 1999) does a tremendous job of bringing the screenplay to life visually while keeping viewers hooked to the plot and various twists and complications in the process. Armed with a noteworthy cast, including Daniel Craig, Academy-Award winners Judi Dench and Javier Bardem, AcademyAward nominee Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Albert Finney and Bérénice Marlohe, SKYFALL is an action/adventure that ultimately gives moviegoers, die-hard Bond fan or not, an early Christmas gift chockfull of pure entertainment with a pretty little “blockbuster” bow on top. Sony Pictures’ SKYFALL has a run time of two hours and 23 minutes, and is rated PG-13 for intense violence sequences throughout, some sexuality, language and smoking. Dallas Chapter of The Links, Inc. launches FirstLocal STEM Academy for female students

– The Dallas Chapter of The Links, Incorporated is partnering with the SMU Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering’s Hart Center for Engineering Leadership to launch a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) academy aimed at reducing the “STEM gap” among female African American students. The new “STEM–ulating Left Brain and Right Brain” program targets students in grades 6-12 in the Dallas metro area. The STEM Academy, a series of academic explorations, kicked off Thursday, Nov. 8, at the Doubletree Campbell Centre with participants and their families and community partners joining Dallas Chapter members to celebrate the commencement of The STEM Academy. Additionally, United States Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson addressed the group and discussed the National STEM Initiative. The first STEM Academy session premiered Saturday, Nov. 10, at Caruth Hall on the SMU campus. The first session

will focus on robotics and PH testing, introducing the concepts of electrical engineering, coding, and computer science to the students as well as demonstrating practical applications for chemistry. Subsequent STEM Academy programs include: Jan. 26, 2013 – STEM Careers and Role Models Feb. 9, 2013 – Aviation April 27, 2013 – Global Information Technology May 18, 2013 – Rockets SMU’s Lyle School and the Dallas Chapter of Links, Incorporated and are committed to increasing STEM readiness by providing student participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to pursue STEM degree programs. Both are working to make STEMrelated internships, fellowships and career opportunities accessible to all students so they can compete in the global workforce.

The Hart Center supports the development of Lyle students by encouraging them to take the lead on important issues and to solve big problems such as the lack of minorities in STEM careers. 50 DISD students have been enrolled for the long-term program, which incorporates short and long-term goals with measurable short-term outcomes. The program will also focus on sustainable immediate outcomes along with longterm measurable outcomes. The Dallas Chapter has an official relationship with DISD as a volunteer partner that will allow chapter representatives to communicate with principals and other administrators and share academic data. Congresswoman Johnson, chair of the National STEM Career Readiness Initiative for The Links Incorporated, and a passionate voice for the need of extracurricular programming for the future scientists, engineers and mathematicians, said, “The number of students of color in STEM related careers is significantly low due to a lack of access to sufficient STEM education. Our STEM–ulating Left Brain and Right Brain program helps to fill that void by providing students with opportunities to be exposed to and readied for STEM – related careers.” Jennifer Kristin Fugate, one of the Lyle student organizers, said she would have enjoyed and learned from the opportunity to “hang out” with college-age role models when she was in middle school. “I believe that our impact on these girls will be tremendous and life-changing, because they will see how cool and exciting it is to be an engineer and will want to be just like us when they grow up.” Fugate said.

Reggi SturnsKemp/President, Jenard Kemp/ Field Services Manager and Larry Kemp/VP Operations with Contracting Champion Award

Kemp and Sons General Services owners Larry and Reggi Kemp recently attended the Inner City Capital Connection Program (ICCC) in Chicago. The ICCC is a program designed to stimulate the flow of capital to inner city businesses. ICCC is the country’s only program that educates investment-ready inner city companies about debt, equity and other sources of capital and matches them with investors to grow their businesses and create jobs. Eligible companies are required to have two million in gross revenues, be headquartered in or have at least 51% or more of physical operations in economically distressed urban areas of U.S. or have 40% of its employees located in economically distressed area. Nearly 200 inner city companies and 150 equity partners have participated in the program since 2005 with more than 406 million of capital raised. Companies are nominated and selected for participation by municipalities, groups and organizations dedicated to economic development in the inner city.

The program consisted of lectures by Harvard Business School professors, private equity, investors, and lending institutions. On November 2, Kemp & Sons received the 2012 Contracting Champion Award from the Small Business Development Corporation of Dallas, TX. The award recognized companies that have had significant success in the areas of federal sector contracting. Kemp and Sons recently secured an extension at The Department of Veteran Affairs (Fort Worth Out Patient Clinic) resulting in a total contract award of 7.2 million dollars. The company had previously secured that location on an interim basis issued November 2010 but has awarded a sole source contract based on superior performance. Kemp and Sons employees 24 personnel at the OPC serving area veterans for all types of medical needs. During Fiscal Year 2012 Kemp and Sons created 48 new jobs (full time and part time), retained 60 jobs and attained 8.3 million dollars in new additional contract awards.
