Van Dyke found guilty By Erick Johnson Chicago Crusader Editor
MY TRUTH
by Cheryl Smith, Publisher
Forgiveness I was already prepared to focus this week’s column on the life of a dear friend, Mr. Dick Gregory, who transitioned last August. October 12, is his 86th birthday. I valued his friendship when he was alive and over the 24-plus years I knew him and got Doris Newsome to know his beautiful wife, Lillian, and other family members. Then I arrived back in town from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s (FAMU) homecoming, to find that an old friend, a fellow Warrior, Doris Newsome had transitioned. I met Doris about 28 years ago and I always thought of her See TRUTH, page 11

Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke was found guilty of second-degree murder Friday, October 5 by a jury at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, ending decades of frustration in Chicago’s Black community and marking a significant turning point involving police misconduct in the police department’s notorious history. Van Dyke was also found guilty of 16 counts of aggravated battery, but on the count of police misconduct, he was found not guilty. In a packed courtroom filled with Black activists and clergy jurors decided that Van Dyke

The 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, has endorsed State Representative Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) for re-election to the Texas House of Representatives. Representative Johnson is one of only eleven candidates in Texas who have been endorsed by the former President and is the only current member of the Texas House to have received the endorsement. Former President Barack Obama released the following statement with the list of endorsed candidates: “Today, I’m proud to endorse even more Democratic candidates who aren’t just running against something, but for something—to expand opportunity for all of us and to restore dignity, honor, and compassion to public service. They deserve your vote,” stated President Obama. Representative Johnson released the following message to his supporters on Monday in response to receiving the endorsement: “It is an honor to be one of a select few Texas candidates to have received this endorsement. It was as if what the women said did not matter. In the most recent case involving now Justice Kavanaugh, the woman bringing the accusation, Professor Christine Blasey Ford, a research scientist, was deliberate and highly believable during her testimony. Her demeanor was profoundly impressive. During portions of his testimony before the Judiciary Committee Justice Kavanaugh was bombastic, caustic, and highly
partisan, qualities that are contrary to the demeanor that any judge on any court should have or display. In fact, his presentation was so unusual that retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens commented that Justice Kavanaugh should not become a member of the Supreme Court, citing his temperament as a disqualifying factor. I agreed with the former justice without reservation. While a very slim Republican majority may have won the confirmation battle in the Senate and witnessed their candidate taking the oath of office, they should not be jubilant. Millions of fair-minded people witnessed the hearings and believed Dr. Ford

They will demonstrate their disapproval and change the face of Washington, and its behavior.

Dallas reaffirms stand for environment
The City of Dallas has taken several recent steps to reaffirm its commitment to environmental protection and addressing the impacts of climate change. One way this is demonstrated is with the realignment of the Office of Environmental Quality to add a focus on sustainability as a critical initiative and officially renaming the department to the Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability (OEQS) as part of Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax’s City-wide reorganization. “Now, we have the framework to move forward with a comprehensive approach,” said Broadnax, “and I am confident this department can better serve Dallas as we work to balance
the environmental, economic, and social needs of this vibrant City.” In addition to renaming the department, the Dallas City Council approved funding in Fiscal Year 2019 to launch a Comprehensive Environmental and Climate Action Plan. With OEQS established and a comprehensive plan on the way, the City will be a model leader in environmental and sustainability advancements engaging citizens every step of the way. These changes could not come at a more appropriate time. At the federal and state levels, policies designed to curtail climate change, environmental pollution, and depletion of natural resources are being rolled back and funding has been re-

duced. OEQS will serve an essential role by helping the City step up to fill this void. The City’s role as a climate leader is several years in the making. In 2017, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings joined 200 mayors in a pledge to adopt, hon-
or and uphold the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement, including a continued focus on the reduction of emissions. In his statement upon taking the pledge, Mayor Rawlings remarked, “With no current state or federal action on climate change, it is apparent that local government must shoulder the burden. The City of Dallas accepts this responsibility and is actively working towards building a greener, more resilient City. Addressing climate change should not be a controversial or partisan issue, and local leaders and the marketplace should work together in pursuing climate action.” City of Dallas staff has been leading the region by actively pursuing

bold emissions reduction strategies and implementing initiatives such as this year’s inaugural North Texas Climate Change Symposium held on March 9, 2018. This annual symposium provides a platform for scientists, advocates, community leaders, and policymakers to share current research and to discuss the impacts of climate change on North Texas. OEQS will host the next symposium in February 2019. As Dallas continues to experience growth and be looked upon to provide innovation and leadership, we will chart a path of environmental and climate action consistent with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

we can find, need to vote in November. We have kept our “powder dry for far too damn long. What the article said without saying, was that if the Hispanic vote came out en masse, Beto O’Rourke could topple Ted Cruz. From that, you could extrapolate that a higher than normal turnout among Hispanics would produce Texas’ first Hispanic head-of-state; (since before the Alamo at least) namely, Lupe Valdez. Our powder can add some Blues to the C&W Trump warbles out to in his segregated rallies. But you must understand the odds of changing Texas in order to change Texas. There are 254 counties in this state. In the 2016 Trump trampling of Blue Texas, the Republicans won 227 of those counties. Some of Texas’ larger counties are Blue, but 100,000 votes a few times can’t beat 10,000 votes a couple of hundred times. Texas is a rural state with a few urban areas, and Trump and the GOP will always win in rural areas. That won’t change for a few generations. So that means the 2018 mid-term success rides on the new voters that Beto excited in small town Texas and the Dems over performing in places like Dallas and Travis County. Ain’t no
Blue Wave just because you say so; you gotta use that powder. In 2016 Democrats got pissed without a plan and the end result has been a lengthy education into the consequences of losing elections. In 2018 there are 48 early voting polling locations in Dallas County alone. Put your plan into action. Identify five folks you know who sometimes “forget to vote and hound them to no end. Donate a dollar or two and commit to at least one act of volunteerism. This election is crucial. This is the last chance to vote straight party ticket, a plot by the GOP to suppress the vote. Without it, voting will take longer and create longer lines. Thousands of Texans registered online are being kicked out in mostly blue counties. The GOP can’t grow so they train their barrels on poor, minority
and senior voters who they believe are inclined to vote Blue. But all hope is not lost. The sisters in Alabama kept their powder dry until it was time for war and saved the Senate from seating a possible pedophile. Progressives in Georgia and Florida fired their shots and are set to make history in those two gubernatorial campaigns. We can vote so heavy in Dallas that we get rid of Cruz, Abbott and a whole bunch of other useless Republicans. Keep your powder dry and shoot as soon as the polls open. And don’t put your trust in any God that doesn’t require you to do some work of your own!!! Vote! Early!! Please!!! Vincent L. Hall is an author, activist and award-winning journalist.

Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson is our civil rights icon
Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson turned 77 on October 8, 2018. Nobody has led a less storied life. He first took a public
The Last Word stand for civil rights when he was just a kid attempting to use the library in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. His activism brought him to the attention of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and he served Dr. King for years before his assassination. From then, Rev. Jackson founded and led Operation Breadbasket, the Rainbow Coalition, and the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Along the way he ran for President twice, gaining millions of multiracial votes and enough support to provide him with significant influence on Democratic platforms. One of the most important things about Rev. Jackson is the way that he empowered others. When I listened to the “Colored Girls” – Minyon Moore, Yolanda Caraway, Leah Daughtry and
Donna Brazile – speak their truth at the National Museum of African American History and Culture on October 1, I was reminded that Jackson has been pivotal in the lives of so many African American political figures. We can call the roll, and name names, but I won’t do that for fear of leaving someone out. What I will say is that there would be no President Barack Obama were there not a Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm who ran for President in 1972, nor a Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, who ran for President in 1984 and 1988. Jackson changed the way that African American people saw ourselves politically. Before him, we thought we could not make a difference. Because of him, we know that we can. Before him, we did not believe, in his words, that “the hands that picked peaches could pick Presidents”. Because of him Stacy Abrams is a possible winner (if we vote) as governor of Georgia; Andrew Gillum is a possible winner as governor of Florida, and unlikely candidates for Congress are poised to win. Thanks to Rev. Jesse Jackson, African American people claimed political audacity. We don’t have to wait our turn, follow the rules, and defer to the status
quo. We can, like Ayanna S. Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Lucy McBath, just buck up against the system and decide to do it our way. We don’t have to climb up the ladder of a broken party system, or wait for the blessing of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Instead, we can step out when the time is right
and the possibilities are there. Nearly 45 years after his historic run for President, Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson is engaged in multiple fights. He is fighting for social and economic justice, as he always has, ever since he defied library protocol and insisted on his right to have access to a taxpayer funded public library. He is fighting police brutality and the unnecessary
murders of young black men like Chicago’s own LaQuan McDonald. He is fighting for young people to thrive in a nation that is biased against them. And he is in the personal fight of his life, fighting Parkinson’s disease as passionately as he fights injustice. Those of us who know Rev. well are excited by his good days, and concerned by the days that are not so good. We see the occasional slowed gait, shaking hands and slurred speech, but we also see the days when his rhetorical representation is as excellent as it ever was, and then we cheer. WE know that this is an indefatigable leader, one who will be no more slowed by a physical impediment than he has been by structural racism. And so we cheer whenever we see him stand up, whether he is standing on his own might, or whether he is assisted. We cheer the long and fruitful life of a civil rights icon who has made the world better for so many people, and opened the door for hundreds of African American politicians. I am writing this from a profoundly biased space. I met Rev. Jackson nearly 50 years ago, when I was an Essence Magazine intern supervised by Chicagoan Leniece Taylor, who was a friend
of Rev. Jackson’s. I’ve been connected since then, as a delegate in 1984, a campaign surrogate in 1988, a family friend, and most recently President of PUSH/EXCEL the education arm of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. I could not have been more delighted than when the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation bestowed Rev. Jesse and Mrs. Jacqueline Jackson a lifetime achievement award, both because they deserve it, but also because Mrs. Jackie doesn’t often get the recognition she should get as “the wind beneath his wings”. I’m biased, y’all, and that’s just that. Our icon, our leader, is celebrating another birthday, and that’s a great thing! He is fighting, as he always has, injustice; but he is also fighting Parkinson’s. And he is not yielding space in either fight. If you appreciate Rev. Jackson as much as I do, let him know! You can go to the Rainbow website, www.rainbowpush.org to send a note, or you can hit him up on Facebook. Let’s rain this brother down with birthday blessings for his 77 years of service.. designed to give voters an opportunity to hear from local candidates. Approximately nine groups of candidates ranging from the U.S. Senate, Texas Governor, to State Board of Education have been invited to participate in panel discussions. The catalyst for the forum was established to discuss issues that affect day-to-day lives that are decided at the local level and provide the importance of participating in all elections that affect local communities. The intent is to highlight areas where voters can make the biggest impact. “This is a ground-breaking opportunity for Collin, Denton and Dallas County nonprofit organizations to partner in an effort to educate constituents on the importance of voting in local and statewide elections,” stated Paula Parker, President,
Plano North Metroplex (TX) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. “We believe that the Candidates Forum provides an excellent environment for transparency in our political process," said Pamela D. Pujo, NDSA President. "The collaboration between our three organizations offers constituents the opportunity to hear from the candidates and to make knowledgeable decisions when exercising their right to vote.” “We are here to serve you - so that you can serve everywhere; therefore, come get informed so that you can perform.”, said Ricky McNeal, President, Garland Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

Within my group of friends, I have a female friend who likes a male friend who is also within the group. The female recently joined the group, but the male has been around some time. The female has tried her best game and, to much dismay, has not won over the male friend. The male friend, however, has given every cold shoulder possible. She, unfortunately, is slow to catch on. Others have tried to politely intervene, but the female keeps knocking. It has progressed to the point that the male friend has stopped coming around, and no one in the group is happy. The group now feels the need to address the issue, almost like an intervention. What do you suggest? Leah Hi Leah, There are two ways to handle this situation: Your way (the easy way) or my way (the harder way). We both know that this woman has been reading too many Cosmo and Essence articles describing the perfect relationship. You know the ones – “How to

Ask Alma by Alma Gill Make Him Love You in 30 Days.” (I wonder why we never see such articles in a men’s magazine. LOL). I remember back in the day when I would read and scan the information into my memory, hanging on every word. Thank goodness I’m all grown up now and I know better. Here’s what I suggest: Somebody pick up a copy of the book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tucillo, He’s Just Not That Into You. It’s based on an episode of “Sex and the City.” It gives straight up, no-nonsense descriptions of when a man just really doesn’t like you. Some women can be extremely smart about everything in life except man. Some lose all sense of rational thoughts and acceptable behavior. We come up with the best of the best excuses for dealing with a dead-end and or non-existent relationship. I know you know what I’m sayin’. This book offers the best guidance one can receive. Wrap that book in a pretty gift bag with beautiful tissue paper. I mean, go all out. Not in front of everybody, but at the end of the evening, walk her to her car and give it to her. This should take place just between the two of you.
Umhm, that would be nice. Or, you can go Nene on her and say loud and strong, “Girl, stop bothering him. He don’t like you like that, and you’re embarrassing yourself. Leave him alone and act like you got some class!” Bam! Case closed, it’s ova (LMBO). Whew! I get carried away sometimes. Allow me to swerve back over to the path of politeness. Have a one-on-one with your girl and share the following: One of the better qualities about men is that they aren’t that complicated, and we love them for that. Almost always there are no mixed messages, no need to read between the lines. It is what it is, and he’ll tell you if you listen. Stop, rewind, push play and let me say that again: All you have to do is listen. So ladies, stop rearranging his words in your mind to mean what you want him to say. If you push up on him and there’s no response, he’s just not into you. Remind her it’s not the end of the world. It’s just a pebble on her path of life. She needs to touch up her lip gloss and keep it moving. Alma

Never too early to get flu vaccine My Truth - Forgive and be loveable, continued from front page Fall not only marks the beginning of shorter days and cooler temperatures, it signifies the start of flu season. And providers at Parkland Health & Hospital System are reminding Dallas County residents about of the importance of getting vaccinated for the flu. “It’s never too early or too late to get your flu vaccine,” said Pranavi Sreeramoju, MD, Chief of Infection Prevention at Parkland and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “Although the season generally lasts from October through March, it can be different from year to year. Since it’s so unpredictable, we want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible.” Although most people infected by the flu recover, it can be a serious illness especially for young children and older adults. In addition, people with certain preexisting conditions are at higher risk for flu complications, including those with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, HIV infection, cancer, history of stroke, adults 65 and older and those who have family members at high risk. Still, Dr. Sreeramoju said people often don’t get immunized because of a lack of information about vaccines or a fear based on misinformation and myths. “Some people believe getting the flu shot will make them sick, but that’s not the case,” she said. “After receiving the vaccine some patients may experience symptoms like a low-grade fever, but the symptoms usually go away within a day or two.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for all persons aged
6 months and older even when the virus has not changed from the previous season. “A person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time so an annual vaccination is needed to get the best protection,” she said. “Each season is unpredictable, but what is predictable is protection,” said Karla Voy-Hatter, RN, Director of Infection Prevention at Parkland. “Annual flu vaccination is the most important measure we have to prevent infection.” Voy-Hatter said following a few simple steps could help reduce the risk of catching the flu: • Clean your hands often using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing to help keep from spreading germs • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth • Keep your distance from others who are sick • Stay home when you are sick to avoid passing the virus to others • Practice good health habits• Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food • Get plenty of sleep and exercise • Manage your stress Parkland’s Community Oriented Primary Care health centers offer flu vaccines as part of its Walk-In Wednesday’s program. Dallas County residents can receive flu vaccines without making an appointment from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday throughout the fall and winter months. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 214-266-4000.

As we took a final embrace, it was a long one. She told me she loved me and I told her I never stopped loving her. I’m back home now and she’s back in Atlanta (does everyone migrate to Atlanta?). I am going to call her once I get off deadline. Do I want to discuss what happened? Not really. If she wants to, I will though. What’s important is that we have an opportunity to right a wrong, to grow from our missteps. Bishop Jakes, said, ““Forgiveness does not exonerate the perpetrator. Forgiveness liberates the victim. It’s a gift you give yourself. It has less to do with what somebody else did as much as it does with your decision to move on with your life and not be continually victimized by rehearsing that issue or incident over and over again.” For me and my little sister, there is no room for the blame game. Instead I’m focusing on the future. I’m sorry for the hurt I caused her and I forgive her for the hurt she caused me. We live, we grow, we evolve, and guess what? We die. As I live, grow and evolve, I want to make sure it all has significance. That’s what Dick Gregory and Doris Newsome did. Dick Gregory always asked, if you could be loveable. Forgiving helps. What are you doing?

Hollywood Hernandez Live Venom provides awesome special effects Venom is the new Marvel Comics movie that has everything you expect from a Stan Lee extravaganza, including a cameo appearance by Stan Lee. In Venom, Tom Hardy (from Dunkirk) plays an investigative TV news reporter who lets his journalistic curiosity get the best of him when he gets an assignment to do a "fluff piece" on a shady businessman who's involved in space exploration. His experiments with outer space lifeforms threaten the planet with superpowers that could take over Earth's human population. Riz Ahmed plays the corrupt businessman who puts his company's profits over the safety of the people of Earth. One of his spaceships crashes in Malaysia and one of the symbiotic creatures gets away and infects people until he travels all the way to San Francisco. Reporter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy)
gets infected with the space creature and becomes Venom who, while far from a "hero", does heroic things in his battle with the wealthy business man's henchmen. The Venom special effects are amazing and the special effects fight scenes are amazing but the movie gets off to a slow start. The movie has a run time of 1 hour and 52 minutes and it seems like it would have been a better movie if it had been tightened up to about 90 minutes. It's ironic that the real bad guy in the movie is the wealthy businessman and not the alien. Venom has some pretty good dark humor; however, it's nowhere near the laughs in the Deadpool movies. This next round of Marvel movies is off to a slow start. How good future Marvel movies will remain to be seen. (Also, remember to stay until the end of the credits for a bonus scene.) On my "Hol-

To expand her mission, Nixon-Bowles opened a house in Cedar Hill [Southern Dallas] for those needing refuge from domestic violence because there were no large facilities in southern Dallas County to take in women and children fleeing abusive situations. Recently Debra shared with me the good deeds from Dallas Mavericks Owner, Mark Cuban. Cuban’s $10 million pledge to boost female leadership programs — a commitment made after a sexual harassment investigation into the Mavericks’ organization — will include $100,000 for Women Called Moses. VBS: Debra stated in our phone interview “this contribution is for the victims of domestic violence and for southern Dallas County.”

All Smiles at the Jubilee Park Community Center
By Nina Garcia
The GuardianLife Insurance Company of America, in collaboration with the Children’s Health Fund, presented Guardians of the Smile, at Jubilee Park Community Center located in East Dallas. Guardians of the Smile is a kid-friendly, educational program that focuses on proper oral hygiene and offers this program to students despite any demographics. With a $1 million dollar commitment,
Guardian and Children’s Health Fund will be sure to increase awareness to dental hygiene across the nation. The children in attendance at Jubilee Park Community Center (ages ranging from kinder to 2nd grade) were all too eager to learn, provided with the hands-on demonstrations on how to properly brush and floss teeth via giant sized props, inter-active games, which taught children how to make good food choices, and even art activities where children drew their smiles to put on display.
The children were surprised with a visit from the “Tooth Guardian,” an animated character who encourages the children to be proactive in healthy oral hygiene. Also, as part of this event, there was a ceremony to recognize an eminent person within the community who is also a long-term employee of the Jubilee Park Community Center. Maria Martha Ruiz, was honored for her role in making sure that all children and senior citizens within her neighborhood receive hearty, nutritious meals on a regular basis.

She puts much time and effort into planning and preparing these meals and she does it with a smile! For these efforts, Sherrie M. Ross, Texas Dental Director, presented Ms. Ruiz with a special personalized apron from Guardian and a $10,000 check to help her continue her work. Hats off to GuardianLife Insurance Company and the Children’s Health Fund for reaching out to children everywhere to offer such pertinent services.
