Will Waller County protect or continue to block students' voting rights? by Royce West Texas Senate
Say it like you mean it! During a visit to the beautiful campus of Florida Memorial University, in Miami, FL., Andrew Gillum addressed a topic that is of major concern to me: the lack of respect that is rampant in today’s society. Mayor Andrew Gillum Mayor Gillum is the Democratic candidate for Governor of the state of Florida. He is a college graduate and the mayor of the Capitol of Florida, Tallahassee. The Republican nominee is former U.S. Rep. Rick DeSantis. In their first face-to-face televised debate, Mr. DeSantis not only displayed a lack of home training and disrespect; he also showed why he didn’t deserve support from voters, on so many levels. I wasn’t the only one was taken aback by Mr. DeSantis’ behavior. During his address to the hundreds of supporters on that HBCU campus, Mayor Gillum

Who is to blame? Hateful words and deeds! Whether it is a gun, bomb or words, Americans are under assault and there are many theories. 11 people killed in a synagogue in Pennsylvania, two shot in a Kroger grocery store, bombs to several people and microphone and platform used to offend. Cesar Sayoc, 56, of Aventura, Florida, is accused of mailing at least 14 explosive devices to prominent Democratic and media figures including former president Barack Obama, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, actor Robert DeNiro and CNN. Sayoc faces five federal charges including interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal
mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications and assaulting current and former federal officers. Robert Bowers, 46, is accused of killing 11 innocent people on October 28, 2018, during Saturday Shabbat services at the Tree of Life Congregation, a Jewish synagogue in the Squirrel Hill community of Pittsburgh, PA. Bowers faces 29 charges including 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder and multiple counts of two hate crimes:
Gregory A. Bush, 51, is accused of fatally shooting Maurice Stallard, 69, and Vickie Jones, 67, on October 24, 2018, at a Jeffersontown, Kentucky, Kroger grocery store. He is facing two counts of murder, 10 counts of wanton endangerment and the case is being investigated as a hate crime. Bush is being held on $5 million bond. TV host Megyn Kelly, 47, defended the use of blackface, appearing to not understand the racist history.

For the second time this month, the eyes of Texas and particularly voting rights advocates, have been drawn to the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Prairie View A&M is in Prairie View, Texas, one of several towns in Waller County, located about an hour's drive west of Houston. Two weeks ago, Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos had to intervene following a complaint by candidate for U.S. Congress Mike Siegel, that decisions made by Waller County officials would cause election-day delays and confusion, or even worse for Prairie View students. Prairie View's dormitories do not have an official mailing address. Reports say that a 2016 plan agreed to by school and county officials and the local political parties, instructed Prairie View students to choose between two addresses as their place See WEST, page 2

of residence to complete voter registration forms. During the March 2018 primaries, Waller County Elections Administrator Christy Eason found that one of the dedicated addresses was outside the voting precinct that covers the Prairie View campus. Prairie View students were still allowed to vote on campus, but only after completing a change of address form on site. Siegel, who is running against incumbent Congressman Michael McCall, issued a letter to county officials demanding the elections department to fix the address and precinct mix-up themselves, rather than placing election-day burdens on students. After an incident which led to the arrest of a Siegel campaign worker, Pablos arranged a conference call with Waller Coun-

Sen. West on Waller County, continued from front page ty, local party officials and Siegel. A joint statement was issued, saying that students' voting rights will not be "impeded, hampered or otherwise delayed" and Pablos promised to have state elections department personnel on sight at the Prairie View campus polling place. Change of address updates can be filled out after ballots are cast. Then on Monday, Oct. 22, a suit was filed by five Prairie View students, asking for the courts to intervene regarding the county's plan that they say limits on-campus, early voting opportunities. Monday, Oct. 22 was the first day of early voting, but under the county's plan, the campus polling site will not open for early voting until the second week, starting Monday, Oct. 29. On Thursday, Nov. 1, the campus' early
voting site closes and moves to a location that's less frequented by students - many who do not have transportation - to an off-campus location a mile away. Early voting is not scheduled on-campus over the weekend, but is available at other locations around the county. The students charge Waller County Commissioners, the Waller County Judge and Eason with acting to suppress the Black student vote. They allege equal protection violations under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the 14th and 15th Amendments, as well as age discrimination under the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Their arguments continue that Prairie View A&M students and City of Prairie View residents have fewer chances to early vote
than residents of surrounding towns like Waller, Hempstead, Brookshire and Katy, even though more people live in Prairie View, which also has a younger voting age population. Prairie View has a larger percentage of Black and Hispanic residents compared to other Waller County cities which all have majority, White populations. Plaintiffs also charge that the early voting plan was devised without input from Prairie View students or campus officials or that of Prairie View's City Council. Numerous accounts, in ad-
dition to the complaint, cite Waller County's long history of voting rights problems dating back to at least 1971, when the county tax assessor and voter registrar barred students from voting unless their families owned property in Waller County. And as recently as 2008, the courts intervened when Waller County sought to limit the number of voter registrations that could be submitted by volunteer voter registrars. On Sept 22, Waller County's commissioners adopted the early voting plan, and in October, by a 3-2 vote, refused
modifications, including recommendations by County Judge "Trey" Duhon and the elections administrator, that would have at least lessened voting access problems, if not eliminate them. Even if the Prairie View students are successful in court, damage has already been done. Early voting has already begun and with it, opportunities missed and rights violated. My question is what can be done to enforce voting rights in Waller County? In their case, it seems as if the fox is guarding the hen house.

Dallas Love Field announces changes to Airport Parking Dallas City Council approved major changes to Dallas Love Field’s on-site airport parking options. Love Field will open its new Parking Garage C, on Nov. 1 at noon. It is connected to the terminal via a skybridge on the west side. Love Field is eliminating the Love Connection, its remote parking lot that offered a discounted rate of $6 per day until Parking Garage C opened. Love Field added 5,000 new spaces in Garage C for a total garage space of 12,000. Also, the airport is reducing rates in its current garages and introducing multiple pricing options for Garage C. All changes to on-airport parking rates will go into effect on Nov. 1 at noon. Garage A cost will be reduced $2 per day to $15. Covered parking in Garage B will cost $9 and uncovered roof parking will cost $7 per day, both of which are currently $13 per day. Standard covered parking in Garage C is $15, uncovered roof parking is $13 and premium reserved parking is $25. Valet is still available and will be $26 a day. Overall, Love Field is discounting prices on 7,000 current spaces and adding 3,500 new spaces at $15 or less. The pricing structure makes Love Field’s garages the lowest-priced terminal parking garages of Texas airports. The new high-tech Garage C features a parking access revenue control system integrated with NTTA TollTags, license plate recognition and a pay-by-foot kiosk in the terminal. The garage also has speed ramps connecting customers directly to their level of choice and wayfinding to help customers better find open spaces and receive real-time garage level counts.
Planning phase for project underway The Dallas City Council has approved a zoning change for The Odyssey that will make way for a transformational, world-class development in Cedars West. The project will be an iconic, dynamic, year-round entertainment destination, anchored by a giant observation wheel, and will fill a void in the Dallas market to help meet the demand of the city’s rapidly growing population, visitors and conventioneers. “We are grateful to the City of Dallas, both the Plan Commission and the City Council, for their support and
confidence, as well as the dozens of community groups and citizens we have met with over the last few months,” said David Taggart, project manager of The Odyssey. “We will take this approval and begin the process of building this new, world-class destination attraction for Dallas. Our goal is for this to be an iconic development for residents and visitors of Dallas.” The Odyssey development will be a fresh and totally unique public/pedestrian-friendly space. A space where all of Dallas can come together and that will act as a gateway to and from the Trinity River Corridor. The entertainment district is set to provide a boost to downtown and southern Dallas pedestrian traffic. The multi-venue entertainment destination will feature state-ofthe-art experiential technology, indoor and outdoor culinary venues, event space, a year-round rooftop entertainment area, a STEAM education center and a parking structure to accommodate approximately 1,000 cars. “I’m excited for the residents of District 2 and everyone that will experience this year-round attraction,” said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Medrano. “This will be a great compliment to the years of revitalization and investments in the Cedars Neighborhood. This project, along with the upcoming high-speed rail station, which will open directly adjacent to The Odyssey and the Dallas Water Gardens, will be tremendous assets to the city of Dallas.” The Odyssey will be part of the Cedars West neighborhood and serve as a gateway to the Trinity River, allowing for greater public access to the river and the future Dallas Water Gardens planned along Riverfront Boulevard. Visitors will be able to access and experience the Trinity via pathways and walk-throughs for pedestrians.

Quit Playin’ By Vincent L. Hall I was fortunate. I was very fortunate. When I was promoted to a management position at AT&T, which turned into Southwestern Bell, which is now AT&T again, I met a man. It doesn’t matter how old a man you are, all of us who are concerned with growing professionally need a mentor. I needed a brother and God sent me one. At the time, AT&T was a place of corporate and administrative rigidity. There was no real need for creativity because there were no emerging products. Customers could order a standard, trimline or a princess phone. The telephones came in black beige, red, yellow or baby blue. The telephone business was pretty simple then. All I needed was someone to teach me how to adjust to the new environment. They matched with a brother on the job. He passed early in my career, but his name was James A. Gates. He wore

Politically correct, or perfectly civil
The Last Word By Dr. Julianne Malveaux
At this writing, Megyn Kelly is off the air at NBC. After her horridly vapid statement saying she didn’t see anything wrong with blackface, she apologized the next day and even invited journalist Roland Martin on to take her to school. Roland did a brilliant job in explaining the history of blackface and the way it demeans African American people, and it was great that he had the opportunity to educate, not only his odious host but also the millions who watch Megyn Kelly daily. So Kelly tearfully apologized, and she listened to Roland and television commentator Amy Holmes as they talked about race. But does Kelly “get” why her remarks were so objectionable. Roland says she does, but I’m not so sure. She prefaced her apology by saying that she was
Firing of Megyn Kelly is warranted, says NABJ Washington, D.C. - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is monitoring reports that Megyn Kelly's recent offensive comments about blackface Halloween costumes have led to some changes at NBC. Although unconfirmed, several media outlets are reporting that Kelly is in the process of being cut from or reassigned at the network. During Tuesday's broadcast of "Megyn Kelly Today," Kelly set off a firestorm of criticism inside and outside of NBC when she said it
not a “pc kind of person.” I’m not sure what that means, and what is wrong with being “politically correct” if it means being perfectly civil, informed, and mindful of others. If African American people say that blackface is offensive, it’s not a big deal, Megyn. It’s offensive. Whether you know the history or not, if members of a group say something is wrong, why not accept it? Or does your white skin privilege allow you to determine what is offensive and what is not? This is not the first time Ms. Kelly has put her foot into racial quicksand. Confident in her Aryan-ness, she proclaimed that Santa Claus is white, and so is Jesus. To declare Jesus white, given his geographical roots on the African continent or in the Middle East, is to embrace a special kind of both spatial and historical ignorance. But if you are vested in the world being a narrow white Caucasian, then you are free to spew racist myths, or shall we say, “fake news.” On the Santa tip, since Santa is not a real person, but a fairy tale figment of someone’s imagination Santa’s race is subject to the imagination. Kelly seemed to have a problem with a Black was OK when she was growing up for white people to dress up as black characters and there was nothing wrong with donning blackface. Colleagues inside NBC, including Al Roker and Craig Melvin, as well as other journalists, called her comments indefensible and insensitive. Kelly later apologized for her comments, saying that she had learned from the many who spoke out about the subject. NABJ Vice President-Digital Ro-
Santa. Why? Does a Black Santa offend her lily-white sensibilities? Is she so seeped in whiteness that she can’t think outside the box? And did NBC throw the talented Tamron Hall under the bus for
that? Speaks to their own racial bias and sense of white superiority! It is tragic to consider that Megyn Kelly has three young children who are undoubtedly being influenced by her warped racial views. But NBC may, perhaps, be reconsidering their relationship with Kelly. It would be a great loss if she were bounced off the air, though there are some who think she has learned her lesson sufficiently to continue her career. What if, instead of losing her job, she was involved in a “black im-
mersion” experience? What if she had to spend a month in a dormitory at Bennett or Spellman College, spending time with the young Black women she seems not to have taken into consideration heretofore? What if her conversation with Roland Martin could be the first of many, and she was directed to spend time with Essence Editor Emerita Susan Taylor, with NNPA Chair Dorothy Leavell, with Jada Pinkett Smith, with Rev. Jesse Jackson, and with others. Might that make a difference for the ill-educated Megyn Kelly? Or maybe she should just read a book or two. Fifty years after the Kerner Commission report it is clear that there are still two Americas, one Black, and one white. Two Americas, with two different realities, and few bridges to understanding. This is why, even in all-white communities, Black history must be taught. This is why our textbooks ought to speak, realistically about enslavement, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and lynching. This is why we need to bust the myth that lynchings were about sex – Black men lusting
land Martin appeared on "Megyn Kelly Today" providing historical perspective on the issue of blackface and its offensive nature. He stressed the obligation of people in today's society to be educated about various cultures and racial insensitivities. Citing the Kerner Commission Report and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., both occurring 50 years ago; Martin talked
about the many ways insensitivity and lack of awareness has contributed to the continued abuse and disenfranchisement of people of color. NABJ President Sarah Glover, who is employed by NBC, said that NABJ would like to see media organizations take bold steps to ensure that diversity and inclusion is practiced on-air and behind the scenes, and that black people and people of color are not affronted. "Megyn Kelly's flip comments on blackface were inexcusable. It

after white women. Actually, too many lynchings were about economic envy – white men lusting after Black people’s property. After white vandals destroyed the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one report actually described the cause of the devastation as “Too Many N---rs Having Too Much Money.” Megyn Kelly is not the only white person who is ignorant of American history (because the history of Black people really is American history). White ignorance is one of the reasons I look askance at some aspects of the #MeToo movement. White ignorance is a choice, especially among adults who can educate themselves and expose themselves to the totality of history. Megyn Kelly chose to expose herself to Roland Martin and Amy Holmes. Too bad she shot off her uninformed mouth before she got educated! Perhaps she will now remove the term “p.c.” from her vocabulary unless she happens to mean perfectly civil.

is imperative that media organizations work to maintain the trust of audiences," said President Glover. "The media industry has the power to inform, and an awesome responsibility to dispel ignorance and not encourage it." Last year, NABJ expressed its disappointment after Kelly was hired as the replacement for Tamron Hall, a successful "Today" show co-host at that time, in part because of Kelly's history of on-air offensive remarks regarding people of color. NABJ will continue to monitor developments at NBC and other media companies to assist with opportunities to help with workforce diversity, equity and inclusion.

Hollywood Hernandez Live mid90s is about coming of age
MID90s is an obvious labor of love for first time director Jonah Hill. He also wrote the movie which is a nostalgic look of the iconic culture of the 1990’s from Nintendo games to Air Jordans. Wrapped around the cultural events of the 90’s, like “Hulkamania” and “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, is a very good coming of age film about a 13-year-old boy growing up in Los Angeles. Stevie, who is played by Sunny Suljic, is a teenager who is living with an abusive older brother and a single mother who likes to sneak in company in the middle of the night. He finds a group of friends at the local skateboard shop and the skateboarders are better at being friends to the
adolescent boy than his own family, but young Stevie also gets exposed to drinking, drugs, young girls and freestyle skateboarding. The boy is fearless. When Stevie’s mom finally figures out that he’s hanging with a gang of
older boys she drags him down to the skateboard shop and tells the skateboarders to stay away from her son, but to no avail. The movie is a time capsule from the 90s, a coming of age movie about a 13-year-old boy and finally, it’s a cultural piece that tells the story of young suburban boys growing up in LA. Jonah Hill does a great job of keeping all the subplots separated and overall tells a very good story. Basically, the movie is a slice of time in the life of a 13-year-old boy. Where he’s going and how his life will end up is anybody’s guess but the 84 minutes of his life that Hill chooses to show is an enjoyable tale about a young boy growing up. The movie lasts 1 hour and 24 minutes and is rated R. On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale” I rate MID90s a LARGE.

Dear Alma,
Absentee Mother
My best friend and college roommate grew up without her mother. She was raised by her father and they had a very close relationship. She shared with me that her mother left because of some unfortunate circumstances but has never gone into detail. I do know that her mother did not play a role in her life. She did not pick her up for visits or spend any time with her. It was like she just vanished. Her father just recently died, and she found out that he had two insurance policies and she called the insurance company to get the information. When she did, she was told the beneficiary was her mother. After 20 years, they never divorced, so her mother was entitled to the money. I told her she should sue her and get the money from her dad’s insurance. If she couldn’t take care of her daughter, she doesn’t deserve that money. My friend was left everything else, his car and his house. The house is in need of repairs and if she could get that money from her mother she would be able to take care of some things. She will probably end up selling the house and she is very upset about that. I told her she should sue and confront her mother. What do you think Alma, do you think she’ll win her case? American’s civil rights cannot be overstated,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “I am appreciative to the Leadership Conference for the important role the organization plays in supporting the civil rights and human rights of all Americans, regardless of their background, and I am grateful for this recognition. My commitment to defending these key values and liberties remains as strong as ever.” The Leadership Conference is an organization comprising more than 200 national groups that are dedicated to promoting and protecting civil and human rights of individuals residing in the United States. The voting record score accounts for votes taken by members of the House of Representatives and the Senate on issues relating to civil rights and human rights, including economic justice and income inequality, immigration, health care and criminal justice reform
Dallas City Council passes City of Dallas Welcoming Resolution, accepts Strategic Welcoming Plan to Foster Inclusion of Immigrants The City of Dallas City Council unanimously passed a resolution to establish itself as a Welcoming City and accept a Strategic Welcoming Plan to guide the City’s efforts in the economic inclusion and social integration of immigrants for the next three years. “We applaud the steps taken by the Welcoming Plan Task Force to move our city forward by leveraging the strengths immigrants bring to our City,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. “This work will integrate new residents from around the world into the social fabric of our city so that we can celebrate their talents and experiences in meaningful ways.” The Welcoming Plan consists of five over-arching goals, 26 recommendations and numerous strategies that will focus on leadership and communications, safe, healthy, and connected communities, civic en-
gagement, equitable delivery of services, economic and educational opportunity. The Welcoming Task Force consists of 85 leaders across a broad spectrum of expertise, including immigrants and refugees. “As a native of Dallas with immigrant roots, the first in my family to go to college and law school, it is great to see the City Council and the City at-large come together to embrace diversity in all its forms,” said task force member Juan Garcia, who was present during the Council meeting. “This Welcoming Plan reflects the work of many and acknowledges that refugees and immigrants are valuable members of our community,” said Linda Abramson Evans, a task force member and longtime human rights advocate. Several City Council Members echoed support of the initiative to establish that Dallas is a diverse, thriving community where one in four residents were born in another country. “The plan is inclusive, and it brought many community voices and perspectives to the table,” said Councilman Omar Narvaez. “I look forward to guiding it through the implementation process.” “Implementing this plan recognizes Dallas’ reality and makes our community more socially cohesive,” said Councilman Philip T. Kingston. “With the City Council’s vote today, we can move forward with plan implementation and seek certification which sets the standard for other cities and counties throughout the nation” said Liz Cedillo-Pereira, Director of the Office of Welcoming Communities and Immigrant Affairs. Dallas received a Gateways for Growth Challenge award in 2017 that included a research report on immigrants’ contributions to the Dallas economy and support for its strategic planning process. Highlights from the research, released in February, include: Immigrants households in Dallas earned $7.9B in 2016 and contributed over $2B in federal, state and local taxes that year. Immigrants account for nearly one-third of the
city’s entrepreneurs and generated nearly $500M in business income in 2016. The DACA-eligible population in Dallas contributed $161 in taxes and held nearly $700 million in spending power in 2016.
Strada Education Network Invests $1 Million in Paul Quinn College’s Urban Work College Model Expansion Grant to Establish Plano Campus
Dr. Michael J. Sorrell INDIANAPOLIS– Strada Education Network announced a $1 million grant award to Paul Quinn College, making it the first major investor in the college’s groundbreaking network of urban work colleges. Over the next two years, Strada’s grant will help fund the first expansion site of the urban work college model in Plano, Texas. The Paul Quinn model aims to eradicate poverty by combining higher education at an affordable rate with access to quality work experience, year-round housing, and a significantly reduced student loan burden. "We are honored that Strada Education Network shares our commitment to building tomorrow’s

workforce and providing pathways out of poverty for hard-working students,” said Dr. Michael J. Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College. “Their willingness to invest in our model once again proves that they are visionaries. We are beyond proud to have them as our first investor in the expansion of the Urban Work College Model.” PQC-Plano, and all other expansions of the model, will eschew the typically high overhead costs associated with maintaining a traditional college physical plant by providing alternative housing options for students and leveraging corporate and municipal partnerships to provide both internships and classroom space. Foundational corporate partners for PQC-Plano include NTT DATA, Aimbridge Hospitality, Ampex Brands, FedEx Office, Liberty Mutual, JCPenney, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and McDonald’s. Paul Quinn was designated in 2017 as the ninth federally-recognized Work College by the U.S Department of Education. Since implementation of the Urban Work College Model, Paul Quinn has reduced tuition and fees by almost $10,000, lowered the average debt of its graduates by more than $30,000, and significantly improved student retention and graduation rates. The Urban Work College Model aims to effectively integrate work and higher education, resulting in more low-income, first-generation, working adults, and traditional-aged college students completing their college educations better prepared for sustained career success while keeping their student loan debt manageable. “Strada is extremely proud to support Paul Quinn College and Michael Sorrell as they take the Urban Work College Model to the national stage,” said Bill Hansen, president and CEO of Strada Education Network. “We hope that our partnership will help propel the model to reach students in urban areas across the country and improve education-to-employment pathways for all students.” Strada’s philanthropic strategy is aimed at piloting and scaling collaborative models and solutions that advance quality career advising, blending work and learning experiences, and enhancing institutional employer engagement to support learners as they transition into the workforce – advancing Strada’s mission: Completion With a Purpose.

Now for the record, it should be a given that you attach a courtesy title until instructed otherwise, especially when speaking to someone in a position of leadership. I have always supported Mr. Perry’s directive (if it came from him). He earned and deserved respect. And, he signed the paycheck. Folks just didn’t get it. It’s not about how long you’ve known or how close you are personally, you still should be respectful and follow certain protocols. I just imagined that Mr. Perry was probably giving someone a tour, possibly some multi-million-dollar investors, and a worker walked by, shouting, “Hey T, what’s going on?” Totally inappropriate, so some protocols had to be established. Thus the directive to refer to their “friend” as Mr. Perry. Some might have said, Mr. Perry was getting the big head, or forgetting where he came from. No, the person out of order was the one that didn’t know or understand that you don’t show out around company. You might as well had been drunk at the Holiday party! Anyway I grew up learning about how Black people were treated, so I always attach courtesy titles even when talking to my friends, in public forums. After all what am I trying to prove? explained how he had just met his opponent back stage, prior to the beginning of the debate. They were not long-time friends or even associates. And as Mr. Gillum pointed out, “I’m a sitting mayor!” What doesn’t Mr. DeSantis understand? Still throughout the majority of the debate, he refused to call Mr. Gillum, “Mayor.” Instead he constantly referred to him as “Andrew.” For many, he might as well had been calling Mayor Gillum, “boy.” Which brings me to my truth. Learning a person’s name and title, while also learning when and where it should be used appropriately, is very important. Unfortunately many immigrants arrive in this country and change their names to appease arrogant Americans who won’t take the time to learn how to pronounce someone else’s name. So you have people “Europeanizing” their name. It is the height of disrespect to meet someone and not attempt to learn their name. Years ago there was an outcry about people who called newly-elected president Barack Obama, just plain “Obama.” Now previously presidents were referred to as “Bush,” “Carter,” “Reagan,” et al; but people were not having it when it came to America’s first Black President! No way after all of these years was that going to happen! And guess what, surprisingly some of those who were calling people rude for not giving the courtesy titles where appropriate would Get FAA approved maintenance training at campuses rudely express their displeacoast to coast. Job placement assistance. sure when telling someone to Financial Aid for qualifying students. Military friendly. use the titles. Do you know this man?
basis with someone of status, or what? I’ve interviewed countless of men and women who before I call them by their first name, I ask if it is amenable/agreeable to them, or I ask how would they prefer to be referenced? And there are others, who, even if they don’t have a professional courtesy title, I default back to the way I was raised and add “Mr., Miss, or Mrs.” And what about this POTUS, FLOTUS crap? Or MLK? Or the N word? Sure we live in a society where we use fewer words and acronyms are big. And while POTUS began as an abbreviation used by telegraphic code operators in the 1890s; there are others who date it back to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration, television shows like “The West Wing” or Monica Lewinsky and President Bill Clinton, acknowledging that it became more popular in recent years. Why call him President Barack H. Obama, or Mr. President when you can call him “POTUS?” Why say Dr. King or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., when you can reduce him to “M-L-K?” Will you have a real defense when called out for yelling to someone, “Hey N-word,” versus “Hey Nigger?” Can you get away on a technicality? There are so many ways to disrespect a person with words. I prefer not to be disrespectful. When I say something, I say it like I mean it and I do!
