Ranking Members Pallone, Green, and DeGette request hearing on Measles Outbreak (Washington, DC) – Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr., Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Gene Green, and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette have sent a letter to Chairmen Fred Upton, Joe Pitts, and Tim Murphy requesting a hearing on the current measles outbreak and preventative vaccinations. The measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in December has led to over 100 cases in14 states and Mexico. Members are now calling for a hearing to examine the role of measles vaccines in preventing outbreaks, noting that “for the 42 patients for whom vaccination status is known, 34 were unvaccinated and three received partial vaccinations.” Prior to its current resurgence, the virus had been deemed eliminated in the year 2000. The resurgence is being traced to communities with groups of unvaccinated people.
the TxDMV, will also help address problems with air quality related to vehicle emissions which are monitored by TCEQ. Motorists who have avoided having their cars inspected will now be compelled to do so as a condition of the registration process. The results of a passed or failed vehicle inspection will be sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles much like proof of automobile insurance is now disseminated between the agencies involved. A vehicle inspection report will be issued to automobile owners at the time of inspection. They should be retained by drivers as additional proof of a valid inspection.

Dan Patrick issues statement on Senate Gun Bills AUSTIN – Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has referred the following legislation to the Senate State Affairs Committee: · Senate Bill 342 (SB 342), Relating to providing for the open and concealed carrying of handguns without a license and to related offenses and penalties.
AUSTIN - State Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) has teamed up with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to announce the launch of the state’s single sticker vehicle registration and inspection program. A press event was held at the Texas Capitol Building to announce the new program Tuesday, February 3. Beginning March 1, 2015, the inspection decal that is now one of two stickers displayed on motor vehicles operating in Texas will be discontinued. Automobile owners will have to show proof of a valid vehicle inspection to be able to register their vehicles. “During the 2013 Legislative Session, I passed legislation that will move Texas toward a system where a single decal, the auto registration sticker, will be used to indicate that an automobile is registered and has passed inspection,” said Senator West. “After a lengthy implementation period that required the TxDMV and the Department of Public Safety to Hon. Royce West redesign their respective computer systems, the new program is ready to go into effect next month. It is important that all Texas drivers know what to expect on March 1 and for the next year, as this single sticker program is implemented.” Starting next month, drivers who have a valid vehicle inspection at the time of registration will be able to register their vehicles. Drivers whose inspection expires before they are required to register will still have to have their vehicles inspected, but will not receive an inspection sticker. Beginning March 1, vehicle inspection information will be transmitted electronically to the TxDMV. There will be a yearlong transition period to synchronize differences between the dates of expiration for vehicle inspection and vehicle registration. Starting March 1, 2016,drivers will have 90 days to have their automobiles inspected before the end of the month that their vehicle registration expires. A notice to automobile owners will be included in the automobile registration renewal notice. “Another thing motorists should know is that the cost for having their vehicles inspected will not change, but the process will be different,” said Senator West. “Drivers will pay inspection stations their portion of the inspection fee at the time their vehicles are tested. The state’s portion of the inspection fee will be added to the cost of automobile registration.” The Department of Public Safety and TxDMV say that the single sticker vehicle registration and inspection program will also eliminate problems associated with fraudulent and stolen inspection stickers. This year, AARP Foundation is again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low to moderate income through the AARP Foundation TaxAide program. In its 48th year, the program is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention the older population. You do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this service. “Tax code is incredibly complex, and many Texans struggle to navigate it and get the refunds they’re due,” said Ron Craig, the volunteer leader oversees all AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers in Texas. “We’re here to help. We see many folks coming back year after year to get help they trust from volunteers in their own neighborhood. We’re always taking new clients as well.” Last year, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide’s 36,000 volunteers nationwide provided 2.6 million people with free tax help. Of these, more than 2,000 AARP volunteers and more than 162,000 taxpayers were Texans. The program is offered at approximately 284 sites in Texas including senior centers, libraries and other convenient locations. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year to ensure their knowledge of revisions to the U.S. tax code. In Texas alone, taxpayers who used AARP Foundation Tax-Aide received more than $106 million in income tax refunds and more than $22.8 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. Preparation of tax returns under the Affordable Care Act rules will require additional documentation from taxpayers this year. The good news is that taxpayers on Medicare or Medicare Advantage don’t need any further information. For everyone else, health insurance coverage information, including information about Marketplace purchases and health care exemptions. If you’re looking for an opportunity to initiate a candid discussion on race, here’s a movie that opens the door wide open and in such a way that all participants could benefit significantly from listening and trying to understand. Not knowing what to expect from the movie, Black or White, featuring multiple award honorees Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer; it was refreshing to see race dealt with so honestly and in your face. Sure some might point to stereotypes and dismissive, especially when minimizing the value of the messages to avoid those tough discussions. The portrayals were very thought-provoking and eyeopening. Elliott Anderson (Costner) is the grandfather who, after losing his wife, finds himself in a court battle for custody of his granddaughter. Rowena Jeffers (Spencer) is standing up for her son who has been an absentee father for the most part and Elliott’s daughter died during childbirth. When Elliott’s wife is killed in

work as he attempts to take care of young Eloise, who is played by the oh so charming Jillian Estell. Interestingly race was the topic of discussion at the Potter’s
House in Dallas earlier this month and next month veteran journalist Hazel Trice Edney will be leading a discussion that is sure to be emotional at times. Too often I have seen folks become very dismissive when the subject of race is broached. Instead of acknowledging other’s feelings or issues, conversations are usually abruptly ended or
glossed over. Sometimes these type of discussions become volatile and violent, which leads to a stalemate. That stalemate continues to
paralyze our country. Fortunately many of the scenarios that erode race relations in America are addressed in Black or White. This movie will have you laughing, almost crying and gasping in shock. If you are honest, however, you will also find yourself re-examining your actions and inactions, as well as those of others. I found the movie refreshing. A must-see. Paula Newsome is hilarious as Judge Cummins as she doesn’t have to say a word to get her point across. Anthony Mackie, as the attorney, Jeremiah Jeffers, trying to reunite his grandniece with her father’s side of the family, give a stellar performance as he struggles with his family’s demons. And Elliott has his own demons to deal with. This is the movie to see. There are so many issues that are addressed other than skin color and culture. Take the children. Take the grandparents. Take your coworkers, students, neighbors, or church members. Then have those important discussion that while uncomfortable are so very necessary. Next plan to see Selma. And continue the discussions. Change your way of thinking and make this world a better place.

Mr. Ernie Banks, a former star player for the Chicago Cubs baseball team who was born in Dallas, was more than just an athlete. Mr. Banks, who recently died, was a man enriched by his faith and fueled by ambition. He won the hearts of many through his skills as a baseball player, and his optimistic views regarding the goodness of life. While it was Chicago where Mr. Banks made his home, it was the city of Dallas that was his life’s foundation. His parents, Eddie and Essie Banks, raised their family of twelve children in a home located at 1723 Fairmount Street, a historical section of the Congressional district that I currently serve. Mr. Banks’ father played semi-
professional baseball in Texas, and supported his family by working as a janitor and picking cotton. His mother, a homemaker, wanted her son to pursue a life in the ministry. Little did they know that one day he would be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest

civilian honor. While pursing his degree at Booker T. Washington High School, Mr. Banks participated in a number of sports, including track and field, softball and football. He was so talented that during the summer months he played semipro baseball with a team located in west Texas. After spending two years in the Army during the Korean War and after a brief tenure with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Baseball League, Mr. Banks’ contact was purchased by
at bats (9,421), extra base hits (1,009), and total bases (4,706). He was voted an All-Star eleven times. Mr. Banks became the most popular sports figure in the history of Chicago. When he retired from baseball in 1971 he was recognized as the most productive shortstop that had ever played professional baseball. As a sign of his greatness, the Cubs retired the number 14 jersey that he wore as a player. Although the Cubs had not won the World Series since 1908,
each year during his time with the team Mr. Banks promised fans that he would do his best to ensure that they won the fall classic. His belief in optimism was an essential part of his DNA. In retirement, he worked for major corporations as a spokesperson, and was later hired as a coach by the Cubs. In 1977 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His concerns for young people led him to start the “Live Above and Beyond Foundation, where he used his celebrity to raise money for causes that improved the lives of children. On January 27th I entered a statement in the Congressional Record about Mr. Banks, calling him a “true American legend who loved his sport, and adored the fans who cheered for him on and off the field. Many members of Mr. Banks’ family reside in North Texas. We are grateful to them for sharing this amazing individual and world-class athlete with us. We shall never forget him, and all that he did to improve the lives of others.

Black History Month ought always begin with the knowledge, experiences, and cultural nuances of and about black people. Listening, and re-listening to the acceptance speech given by Viola Davis at the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony makes that painfully obvious. If you don’t remember Ms. Davis from the Civil Rights era movie; “The Help” you may know her for her leading role in the weekly TV drama; “How to get away with Murder.” The latter is based on the brilliance of a college law professor who makes Perry Mason look like a first year law clerk. Second class citizenship is still applicable to our stature in America and still palatable to too many of us. When the police see young Black men they see “demons” that have to be met with deadly force. When America and even some Negroes see Black women who are not light-skinned, mulatto, quadroon or octoroon, they can’t see any beauty at all. Especially if they ain’t got no long weave! The number one movie in the Black community is Selma, and it looks like we haven’t come far since the victory at the Edmund Pettis Bridge. We march for peace and protest for our rights only to be met by police with para-military gear
and war-time strategies for hand to hand combat. Don’t worry, I will get to Viola Davis before I run out of space, but peep this. CURRY: How Dick Gregory Got his Hollywood Star THE WHOLE TRUTH By George E. Curry
George E. Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine, is editor-inchief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service (NNPA.) He is a keynote speaker, moderator, and media coach. Curry can be reached through his Web site, www.georgecurry.com.
Activist/ SiriusXm satellite radio host Joe Madison was helping on a campaign to get the Four Tops a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame when he noticed another serious omission from the world-famous tribute to entertainers. “You go to Hollywood and Gene Autry had five (one in each category). Big Bird had a star. When we did our campaign to get the Four Tops a star, I said, ‘My God, Dick Gregory doesn’t have a star.” In 1997, seven years after getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Four Tops, – whose 1960s hits included such songs as “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Ask the Lonely,” “I Can’t Help Myself” and “It’s the Same Old Song” – finally were awarded a star. But Madison couldn’t get over the fact that Dick Gregory, the first Black comedian to earn more than $1 million a year yet gave up his career to actively support Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating
Committee (SNCC), hadn’t been recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “You can walk down there and not see Dick Gregory, but you’ll see Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor and Whoopi Goldberg,” Madison said. “ I don’t know of any entertainer from the era who sacrificed more than Dick Gregory.” About 10 years ago, he set out to change that. “The first time we tried it, we filled out a very complicated application and the committee – the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce – didn’t award him a star,” Madison remembered. “I tried again and they still didn’t accept it. We let some time go by. This time (in 2013), I said, ‘Look, this is ridiculous.’ That’s when I got Sheila Moses, who helped write Dick’s last book, help word the application. E. Faye Williams, president of the National Congress of Black Women,
helped and we put the application together and sent it in. Finally, the committee accepted him in the class of 2015.” At the age of 85, Gregory joins a class that includes Kool & the Gang, Pharrell Williams, Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler. The induction ceremony was carried live Monday on national and international television. Before Gregory could receive his honor, $30,000 had to be
submitted on his behalf to cover the creation and installation of his star as well as maintenance of the Walk of Fame. A small group of supporters got together to strategize. The first idea was to reach out
to some of the biggest names in Hollywood who could write the $30,000 within the blink of the eye, including fellow comedian Bill Cosby and Hugh Hefner, who lifted Gregory to national stardom in 1961 by regularly booking him at Chicago’s Playboy Club. The second idea was to identify 30 people willing to donate $1,000 each. But Joe Madison had a better idea. He recalled, “I got with Sherry [his wife and radio producer] and said, ‘Let’s go on the air and make this very simple – 1,000 people with $30. If I don’t have 1,000 listeners who can afford $30, I need to be off the air.’” Madison didn’t need to get off the air – the $30,000 goal of the Dick Gregory Hollywood Star Fund was reached in two weeks. “What it really speaks to is Dick,” he said. And it’s hard to find anyone who has not been touched by Dick Gregory in some way. As a teenager growing up in Tuscaloosa, Ala., I remember hearing him speak at First African Baptist Church, the nerve center of our efforts to desegregate my hometown. I was stunned by the way he boldly attacked segregation,
keeping us laughing along the way. He would say, “The last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant and this White waitress came up to me and said, ‘We don’t served colored people here.’ I said, ‘That’s all right. I don’t eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.’” And there was this one: “Segregation is not all bad. Have you ever heard of a collision where the people in the back of the bus got hurt?” There was simply no one else like Dick Gregory. And callers into Joe Madison’s radio show shared their special memories. Madison remembers the callins: “One guy, who’s a doctor in New Orleans, said, ‘Dick Gregory spoke at Xavier University. I was a student and I still have the notes from that speech.’ He was in school in the 70s. “An executive from Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill. said, ’I am the only Black sitting up here on the 7th floor and I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Dick Gregory. I know you asked for $30, but I am sending $1,500.” Most of the contributors were everyday people who donated $30. “It had to be done,” Madison said of the campaign to honor Gregory. “People say, ‘Who cares about a star on the Walk of Fame? It’s about marking your territory.” See Page 10 for more coverage

Reducing HIV Among African American Communities By Sylvia Mathews Burwell, HHS Secretary
Like so many Americans, I have seen the tragedy first hand, of friends lost to HIV/AIDS. I’ve also seen the hope of those living with HIV as we continue Sylvia Mathews to work toward an AIDS Barwell free generation. Each February 7th, we mark National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). It’s an opportunity for all of us to honor the memory of those we’ve lost, and to call attention to the fact that HIV continues to disproportionately affect African American men, women, and youth. The numbers are startling: African Americans represent only 14 percent of the U.S. population, but account for almost half of all new HIV infections in the United States per year, as well as more than onethird of all people living with HIV in our nation. This year’s NBHAAD theme, “I Am My Brother’s/Sister’s Keeper: Fight

New Parkland hospital burn center will nearly quadruple in size More than 1,200 patients receive care annually DALLAS – Established in 1962, the Burn Center at Parkland Memorial Hospital is one of the largest civilian burn units in the nation. Serving North Texas and surrounding areas, it is a comprehensive burn unit that provides the newest research, technologies and products for treatment of burn-related injuries that result from flames, chemicals, electrical injuries and scalds. Parkland also provides treatment for complicated skin infections and disorders. More than 1,200 burn victims are cared for annually at Parkland and more than 790 pediatric and adult burn patients were admitted to the hospital in 2014 for inpatient care. Patients are also seen for follow-up care in the Burn Care Outpatient Center. Today, patients are treated in three separate areas of the hospital and outpatient clinic. But when the new Parkland opens in August, patients will receive care in a centralized 32,000 square-foot center; nearly quadruple in size from the current 8,500 square feet. In addition, the patientcentered approach to design created a more home-like healing environment with natural light and windows as well as more space for family and visitors. “The new Burn Center will include 12 intensive care beds, 18 acute care beds, six hydrotherapy beds, a

playroom for children with burn injuries and a gym area for physical and occupational therapy,” said Lou Saksen, senior vice president of New Parkland Construction. “The center also includes space for the outpatient clinic.” Having all the services located in one area will enhance patients’ continuum of care and make it easier as they transition from intensive care to acute care and then outpatient, said Christine Lane, RN, Burn Unit Manager. “We have some patients who are with us for days, weeks and sometimes months,” Lane said. “Along with reducing the risk of infections, the private rooms in our new stateof-the-art facility will make it more comfortable for family members.” Lane noted that because of the length of time that burn patients are typically hospitalized they and their loved ones are often looked upon as the staff’s extended family. Milestones in care and treatment are celebrated along with birthdays and holidays. “As are all of Parkland’s patients, ours are very special to us,” Lane said. “Beyond the physical pain, our patients often have to deal with emotional trauma as well. If we can ease some of that pain then we’ve done our job.” Because of Parkland’s excellence in the field of burn medicine, patient outcomes throughout the world have improved. Thirty years ago, patients with burns covering half of their bodies saw only a 50 percent chance of survival. Now, patients sustaining burns on half of their bodies see 96 percent survival rates. Anna Staff was just 19-months old when she was burned in an accident that left her with scars on her arm, neck and back. She was fortunate, she says, because she was treated in Parkland’s renowned Burn Center. “Exactly where we needed to be,” she said. Today, Staff is a registered nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University Medical Center in Lubbock. Parkland’s Burn Center maintains Burn Center Verification status by meeting the criteria of the American Burn Association’s Burn Center Verification/Consultation Program. This means the center meets the highest standard of care for burn patients as approved by the American College of Surgeons. For more information on Parkland’s Burn Center, visit www.parklandhospital.com

Voting Rights discussion features Selma native
“Selma Native and March participant speaks in Dallas about Voting Rights struggles” On Saturday, February 7, 2015 @3pm at The Black Academy of Arts & Letters (TBAAL) 1309 Canton Street-Dallas, Texas 75201. Joanne Bland, who was 11 years old when she was beaten with fellow marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama on Sunday, March 7, 1965, will discuss her experiences on that day now known the world over as “Bloody Sunday” Admission is $10.00 for tickets call the TBAAL Box Office at (214)-743-2400. Bland will talk about her work as a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Selma to gain voting rights. And about how at 11 years old she had been arrested documented 13 times. That work along with others in Selma helped pave the way for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to finally lead a successful march from Selma to Montgomery and the victorious signage of the Voting Rights Act and of course what it felt like to vote in her first election when she
became of age. A much sought after speaker Bland has presented in numerous workshops across America. During an April ceremony in Dallas Texas last year Bland was presented with the distinguish Robert O. Cooper Peace and Justice Fellowship Award at Southern Methodist University (SMU) as a veteran of the civil rights movement. Following her speech a Panel Discussion will convene on the topic: “History of Electoral Politics in North Texas.” Panelists are: Diane Ragsdale, Managing Director Innercity Community Development Corporation (ICDC), Carl Sherman, Mayor DeSoto Texas, Michael Jones, Mayor Pro Tem Glenn Heights Texas, Jesse Jones, Former Texas State House of Representatives, Gina Bivens, Fort Worth City Council and Joanne Bland, Co-Founder National Voting Rights Museum & Institute, Selma Alabama, Mollie Belt, Publisher The Dallas Examiner Newspaper and Miguel Solis, President Dallas Independent School District (DISD). Moving Forward Together in Unity with New Mount Zion Baptist Church Photos by Wallace Faggett
It was a stellar black tie, red carpet, star-studded, joyous, gala affair at Dallas’ Hyatt Regency Hotel as new leadership was presented and celebrated at the New Mount Zion Baptist Church’s Unity Gala, “Moving Forward Together in Unity,” recently. Elected officials (including State Sen. Royce West and Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway pictured) celebrities, members of the clergy and community activists joined the many guests, supporters and church members from across the country who walked the red carpet and praised Rev. Tommy L. Brown and his wife. The event featured Pastor Emeritus of St.
Luke “Community” United Methodist Church, Dr. Zan. W. Holmes, Jr. After a search that garnered over 500 applicants, Rev. Brown was selected to the post that was held by Rev. R. E. Price, who transitioned in July, 2012. The father of three, Dr. Brown is a leader in the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America. H previously served as pastor of Ervay Cedar Baptist Church of Dallas, for over 15 years. Boomerang Roommate and Loud Choir member Dear Alma, My roommate gave me a three-day notice that he was moving, because he met a woman three months ago and they decided to move in together. Fast forward six months. It’s not working out and he wants to move back in. I haven’t found a replacement roommate and I could use the money. Should I let him move back in? Jayden, Lanham, Md. Hi Jayden, In a word, No, my-brother! Okay, that’s three words, LOL. Keep looking, you’ll find someone much more reliable and make sure you get a security deposit this time. Alma
Dear Alma, Recently a woman joined our church and has joined the choir. She relocated from out of town, so none of us have a longtime relationship with her. We, as in our choir, love her dearly but she is too loud. When she talks you can hear her all the way down the street. She’s so loud, it’s embarrassing. You know when she arrives for choir practice because you can hear her all the way out in the parking lot. She seems to really like me and we talk often. Of course now I’ve been elected to tell her. I just don’t know what to say. I don’t want to hurt her feelings. What do you suggest? Sherree from Alabama Hi Sherree,

Looks like your new friend hasn’t learned how to use her inside voice and you’ve been nominated the one to teach her. I know it’s a tough assignment, but you can do it. There’s no easy way to slide into this home run, so why don’t you just take it head first. Don’t make it a long conversation, say it and let it go. The next time she’s shouting, whisper in her ear, inside voice, smile and keep it moving. Yes, it will take more than a few reminders, but your concern is honest and sincere. As long as you don’t put her on the spot in front of everybody, I think this approach can be heartfelt, nice and easy. The outcome, fingers crossed, will be one she eventually learns to accept and appreciate. Alma

Again, Let it Go. Please. Spiritually Speaking
I am trying again to internalize that today is the day the Lord has made. Don’t complicate it. The more complicated the world seems, the simpler it is to understand God’s Word. I’m reminded every day and sometimes get caught up in the power of ego, pride and the desire to control, or better yet, be in control. Letting go and letting God, however easy to understand is still really hard to do when all hell is breaking loose around you. We all know people who can quote scripture backwards and forwards but have little to no faith. Likewise, we also know what I call Christian control freaks, who must have the last say and who must be right all the time. I know can easily get caught up in trying to rationalize circumstances I’ve created in order to explain the events of the day, any day; as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority. It is more often than not these days, that if I recognize I am blessed and subsequently open to the Holy Spirit, I get to see the miracles, the nuances, the essence of life. The day belongs to the Lord. I am not in control and it is okay. Giving one’s life to Christ requires the discipline of faith to not take credit or assess blame. When you focus on service in the name of the lord, you really get a chance to see things from a different perspective. Now the service I’m referring to is the selfless kind which seeks neither reward nor recognition. The act speaks for itself. Christ tells us the God knows what’s in your heart and thus knows your intention. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself; simple enough? It’s so simple, in fact, that if you’re not careful, you’ll miss this thing altogether. Now on this day that God has made, any day, let’s take this simple concept into what
we think is a complex world. That means behavior should have parameters. Actions should have purpose. Intent should easily be identified. Now let’s look back over your yesterday. When I do that I find a lot of times jealousy, envy, pettiness, cruelty, mean spiritedness and the like have crept into my reaction to the world. Face it. It’s hard to be humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day every day. It takes will power and you know the will I’m talking about. The calling of every Christian is to try. It’s the effort rooted in faith that God expects. If you’re first seeking the kingdom, then your daily behavior will reflect your effort and certainly have direct bearing on what you do today, how you perform and certainly with whom you hang out. Looking back on it, I know I’ve known angels walking among us. I believe without a doubt saints are with us and we ignore them because we’re busy pursuing the world and all it has to offer, rather than pursuing God. I’m blessed to say that from these living breathing angels I’ve learned as the saying goes, the battle ain’t over until you win. Or better yet, the battle is over because Christ already won the war. It’s kind of nice to know He took care of that eternity thing some time ago. All I have to do is get through this life thing. It may not make sense on one level but on another, it really is simple. See me. See God. I can do this. I just gotta let go; one hour at a time, one day at a time, one person at a time. Today is truly a day that the Lord has made. May God bless and keep you always.

SERENA
By Miles Jaye
Capturing her 19th Grand Slam win at the Australian Open yesterday, passing Chris Evert and Martina Navritilova, each with 18 wins, Serena falls only three wins from tying Steffi Graf and four from taking over the all time record, making her the alltime greatest female tennis player
of all time. In an era of super-superlatives where everyday someone in the boxing world or the NFL or NBA is being heralded as the greatest in the game today or the greatest to have ever played the game, Serena may in fact be the greatest athlete of our generation, male or female. In the 2014 New Yorker magazine article: Serena Williams Is America’s Greatest Athlete the writer offers: “Sorry, LeBron. Sorry, Tiger. Sorry, Derek.” One day before the Not-SoSuper Bowl and all the hyperhype that comes with it in the form of controversy (DeflateGate), or White Hats vs. Black Hats, I would add, sorry, Tom, sorry, Russell, sorry Gronk, sorry, Mr. Sherman and Mr. Lynch. It’s not my intention to throw undeserved Super Bowl shade,
but at this point I’m disinvested in a game where a sports analyst refers to Tom Brady as a Great American and the Seahawks as characteristically and collectively “angry.”
Anyway; as far back as 2013, Rolling Stone magazine referred to Serena in an article: Serena Williams: The Great One and even as she tied Evert and Martina with 18 Grand Slam wins, Chris commented that Serena was
(214) 941-0110
already the greatest woman to ever play the game, now she’s won 19. Did I mention that Ms. Williams accomplished this feat at age 33, winning her 6th Australian Open with an upper respiratory condition which led to uncontrollable coughing and vomiting during a rain delay? I don’t want to hear another word about Brady’s sniffles or Sherman’s sore elbow. She served 18 100+mph aces, while not feeling well. She actually said she felt better after throwing up. Can you say, “Champion?” How scary is the notion that this 33-year-old Black woman from Compton may be the premier, elite athlete of our day? Could she be greater than the whole host of NFL, NBA, ABL NHL Hall of Famers? Could she be greater
than the pantheon of your favorite Olympic heroes? Speaking of the Olympics, Serena has a big sister with the Greek name Venus, (also a champion) with whom she shares a perfect doubles record. So while you’re ogling the awesome Serena Williams physique, imagine it in bronze like the Joe Louis fist in Detroit or “Air” Jordan in Chicago. Points of interest: ~She unfortunately does not enjoy endorsement opportunities awarded to lesser female tennis players. ~With $60 million in career earnings, she’s likely underpaid by male standards. ~It’s predicted Serena will surpass Steffi Graf’s record by age 35. Keep striving for love and peace!
Hang Time - A Harlem Globetrotters Weekend by Eva D. Coleman
To say my eight-year-old is a basketball fan is an understatement. She loves the sport, and after a couple of years of her asking, I’ve finally signed her up to play on a team. A few months ago, I noticed her lying on her side on the kitchen floor, dribbling the ball while spinning her body clockwise. “Where’d you get that from?” I asked. “The Harlem Globetrotters,” she answered as she continued to dribble and spin. Truth be told, I noticed her ability to dribble about three years ago. I watched her as she handled the ball on my tile kitchen floor (I don’t mind this activity inside because I’m totally not the outdoorsy type). She’d masterfully switch hands and equally dribble just as well, and at such a young age. Nearly two years ago, a neighbor approached me at a party and asked, “Have you seen your baby play basketball?” “Not really, what’s up?” I questioned. “I saw her playing on the court at school with the boys, and she was taking them!” She excitedly replied. When others take notice and share their thoughts, it sort of validates underlying thinking. I placed her in a brief basketball camp this past summer. Throughout the camp, she won a few of their skills contests.
I, however, was still lagging in my commitment to a routine of practices and games. When my daughter’s birthday party rolled around this past fall, she even selected a basketball theme! She’s also shared with her sister and I that she wants to play in the WNBA. Recently, she created a make-shift VIP credential that she attached to a lanyard. Along with her name it read, “WNBA Player.” So now, I’ve made the commitment. I’ll help her realize her dream if she chooses to stick with it. When I learned the Harlem Globetrotters were coming to town, I had two dear friends committed to making sure she made it to the game. I love the village that’s helping me raise my child! We watched the Globetrotters take on the Washington Generals. The Globetrotters line-up included a lone female, T-Time, whom my child can now quickly recount her factual history with the team. The skills and antics on the court did not disappoint the crowd. The entire show was interactive and highly entertaining. The autograph session on the court after the game that was available to all fans added an even special treat to the evening. As I watched my WNBA hopeful look on with delight and her big sister enjoying herself as well, I couldn’t help but take this precious moment in. I’ll remember it forever as a bonus hang time with my girls. No fouls. No injuries. Just fun.

Imlach & Collins Brothers bestowed Mover of the Year Award for efforts with Move for Hunger Imlach & Collins Brothers, an agent of Atlas Van Lines, was recognized as the top recipient of Move for Hunger’s 2014 Atlas Van Lines Mover of the Year award. This merit distinguishes an Atlas Van Lines agent who had the highest amount of participation and donations for ongoing efforts to prevent hunger in its local community. To date, Imlach & Collins Brothers has accumulated more than 121,948 pounds of non-perishable food for the Dallas market. Since the partnership’s inception with Move for Hunger, Atlas Van Lines and its network of agents have collected 357,937 pounds of food, which has contributed to feeding more than 298,280 individuals across the country. “Our staff is always looking to give back to the community, and Imlach & Collins Brothers is honored to participate in Move for Hunger’s nationwide effort to fight hunger,” said Ian Imlach, sales representative at Imlach & Collins Brothers. “This year alone, we were able to supply 73,238 meals for those individuals in need of assistance, giving us a number we will strive to exceed in years to come.” Since 2013, Imlach & Collins Brothers has been heavily involved in North Texas Food Bank's Food 4 Kids program. Operating in 330 elementary schools throughout North Texas, Food 4 Kids reaches 11,000 students weekly who are at risk of being food insecure. When the food bank reached out for help due to budget cuts, Imlach & Collins Brothers did not hesitate to extend a helping hand. As a result of their unwavering commitment and assistance to the program, students have access to enough food to sustain their families
throughout a weekend. In addition, Imlach & Collins Brothers also participated in the Dallas Area Public Library Food Drive which included 25 participating area branches and six Move for Hunger movers in March of 2014. “In the few years Imlach & Collins Brothers of Dallas have been participating, their efforts have proven to be invaluable in the fight against hunger,” said Adam Lowy, executive director at Move for Hunger. “Their commitment to the community has earned enough food to feed more than 101,623 individuals in need. This is a clear illustration of the impact our movers make on a year-round basis.” Imlach & Collins Brothers is among more than 600 moving companies that help create one of the nation’s largest, year-round service programs with Move For Hunger. The agency is continuously seeking new, creative ways to give even more to Move for Hunger – whether through events or partnerships with organizations and businesses. “Our agency network never ceases to amaze me, especially when it comes to helping others in need,” said Jack Griffin, president and COO of Atlas World Group. “We applaud Imlach & Collins Brothers for their efforts and greatly appreciate their dedication and support of our Move for Hunger partnership, and helping feed Americans.” For more information on Imlach & Collins Brothers, visit http://www.imlachcollins.com.
