SMITH: Marching in Dallas - a history lesson

When thousands gathered in Dallas for a re-enactment of the historic Selma to Montgomery March, it was a vision worth remembering. Organized and hosted by Texas State Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), the event was very inspiring and thought-provoking. Citizens of all ages joined in the March and we heard from speakers, young and old. There was music that told the stories of struggles in America and there was talk of hope, love and equality. It felt so good to be out participating with my people in Dallas, because just earlier in the month, actually two weeks prior,

I was in Selma, Alabama with people from all across the country and around the world. A special thanks to Sen. West for his visionary leadership. I’m sure there were students who knew nothing of the struggle for voting rights, but they got a history lesson that day. There were also adults who learned something from the experience. And we need more history lessons, like the ones that will be shared at the celebration to commemorate the naming

JOHNSON: Doris “Dorie Miller deserves honor

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson represent the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.

The effort to have the Medal of Honor posthumously awarded to Doris “Dorieâ€? Miller has, in recent weeks, been joined by university presidents, mayors, newspaper publishers, pastors, elected officials, leaders of veteran’s organizations and everyday men and women across this country who believe that a horrible historical oversight that continues to deny the nation’s highest military honor to a deserving hero must be corrected. It is a well-known fact that Dorie Miller manned a machine gun during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. It is not widely known that he risked his life to save the lives of others on the U.S.S. West Virginia. He also assisted the

mortally wounded captain of the ship, Mervyn S. Bennion. The ship’s captain was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. The senior surviving officer of the U.S.S. West Virginia wrote in his official report that Dorie Miller’s actions on the day of the attack were heroic. Commander Hollenkoetter noted that Dorie Miller saved the lives of a “number of people who might otherwise have been lost.â€? Despite Commander Hollenkoetter’s report, the Secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox, recommended against awarding the Medal of Honor to Dorie Miller.  A group of historians have discovered that Secretary Knox only wanted to give Dorie Miller

a letter of commendation for his actions. It was only after President Roosevelt and Admiral Chester Nimitz intervened that Dorie Miller received the Navy Cross. Many observers knew then, as they know now, that the treatment of Dorie Miller was unfair. As early as 1942, Michigan Congressman John Dingell, Sr. introduced legislation asking that Dorie Miller be awarded the Medal of Honor. When he died in 1955 his son, John Dingell Jr. succeeded him in Congress and continued his father’s effort on behalf of Dorie Miller. Other members of Congress who have attempted to have the Medal of Honor awarded to Dorie Miller include Texas Representatives Jake Pickle, Barbra Jordan, Mickey Leland and Craig Washington. It is something that I have attempted to do since the time that I became a member of the House of Representatives in 1993. The president of the Orders

and Medals Society of America, Retired Army Colonel Fred L. Borch, said that the Medal of Honor is awarded to those who demonstrate heroism in combat. They must have demonstrated “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty,â€? Borch said. Certainly the actions of Dorie Miller on that sad and fateful day in December of 1941 were intrepid, gallant and above and beyond the call of duty. Given the option of remaining safe in America or going back to sea, Dorie Miller chose the latter. He lost his life in 1943 when his ship was struck by a Japanese torpedo. I, like many others, passionately believe that Dorie Miller should be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service to our nation. Because of his heroic actions he deserves nothing less. Now is the time to recognize his contribution.

HALL: No Party Favors! Quit Playin’ Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist. The odyssey and obstruction orbiting a pending Senate confirmation of Loretta Lynch as the next Attorney General was making me ill. Politics is politics, but when

you add in race, it takes on a different dimension. Since the inauguration service which placed that synthetic scepter in the bronzed hands of America’s first African-American President, the world has come to realize

how much race plays into every definition and every decision in America. Loretta Lynch is just another story in “The Naked City.” (Google it!!) Even the ultra-liberal talking

Loretta Lynch

heads have tried to skirt the racial aspect of this stupid ploy by the Republican Party. Many deny race as a factor. I ran across an article in the New York Daily News that confirming for me that the undercurrents of

racism are as far-reaching and flagrant as always. “A 10-year-old girl was trying to have a birthday party and a race relations discussion broke out. African-American child Harmony Jones invited a friend to her party on Friday night in Memphis, Tenn., but the young girl got a stunning magic marker note in return: her friend’s dad wouldn’t let her attend due to the birthday girl’s race, WREG-TV reported. The unidentified child wrote in blue, green and pink, “Maby [SIC] I will not be able to come to your birthday sleepover, because my dad will not let me go because you are black.” The girl added, “Not trying to be races [SIC], but my mom let

me go. Happy birthday!”” Harmony’s unfortunate story mentally tethered me to a story I had seen by Rachel Maddow about the “lynching” of Loretta. Rachel Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar whose reports and reporting are always academic and well excavated. Here’s my thumbnail sketch of the 10 minute plus feature she ran. Loretta Elizabeth Lynch grew up in Durham, North Carolina where she attend a mostly White elementary school. At an early age, she scored so high on a standardized test, that school officials there required that she take the test again. She did and scored even higher. By the end of Loretta’s senior year in 1977, she became the valedictorian of her high school class. District officials were concerned that naming Loretta as the lone valedictorian would create racial upheaval; they decided to make Loretta covaledictorian that year, with two other White students. Loretta excelled as an undergrad at Harvard and earned an academic sleepover with the institution which resulted in her receiving the historically coveted Harvard Law degree. Loretta eventually accepted a highpaying job at a private law firm. She quit that lucrative position

after six years because, being the patriot that she is, wanted to parlay her degrees and expertise for the good of the American people. She made the ultimate economic sacrifice and gave up 75% of her salary and probably 95% of her potential wealth to work for her country. At her posts with the feds she has won cases against scandalridden high-profile politicians as well as major terrorism cases. Loretta Lynch, working as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York has been heralded for the successful conviction of an organized ring of convenience store owners who brought in immigrants and forced them into slave labor in their stores. The media hastens to remind us that Loretta is the second longest candidate to wait for the job, citing Edwin Meese as an example. However, Meese’s conformation was inordinately long because he was investigated for not disclosing interest-free loans that he had been given. By the time this missive is published, Loretta Lynch may have been confirmed and this may be obsolete. But the issue of race has no expiration date and it ain’t been no party or party favors for Loretta Lynch or Harmony Jones. White men seem to be giving each of them a rough go of it.

I can recall your words after Selma admonishing us to continue marching together for advancement, however, I also remember your remarks about Cuba in which you stated that a 50 year old failed policy should be open to scrutiny, reassessment and change. Our democracy might ring more true if we substituted marching and celebrating decades long struggles with robust prosecution of civil and human rights violations and abuses, present and past. We might find the playing field more level if we demanded effective legislation and judicial review of unfair institutional See AUDACITY, Page 7

Students commemorate historic Selma march

Sen. West proud of students' practicing civic involvement Dallas, TX - Despite a forecast of rain and threatening skies, several hundred students and their parents turned out Saturday March 21, 2015 at the Continental Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Dallas, joining hundreds more marchers, to commemorate the historic march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. The students answered the call of State Senator Royce

West (D-Dallas) to reenact the historic march that was held 50 years ago in protest of restrictive voting laws. Before the march started, Troop 1269 Boy Scout Christopher Harrison told the group, "While I was not born then, I understand the importance of their seeking our right to vote. That non-violent movement was

met with violence. I hope for a world of equality." Senator West thanked the crowd for not letting the threat of rain keep them from taking part in the march. "This is the time to remember the heroes and sheroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on Bloody Sunday 50 years ago." With the backdrop of the Dallas skyline, the students marched across the mile long bridge and back carrying signs that said; When will we overcome?...One dream can change the world...Together we can-They did...Taking a stand. The students symbolically reenacted the successful March 21, 1965 march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol in Montgomery. It was the third attempt following the first march, now called "Bloody Sunday," two weeks earlier when state and local lawmen attacked peaceful demonstrators. The 54-mile march was successfully completed under a federal court order and the protection of some 4,000 federal troops and state police. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law less than five months later. Following the march, Taylor Jenkins, a Skyline High School student, said she took advantage of the right to vote and voted for the first time last November. She added, "Selma sparked change and got the Voting Right Act, yet many adults are eligible to

vote but don't. You need to encourage your peers to vote." Early Childhood Education promoted

By Jonathan Jackson Hundreds of teachers, administrators, public officials and parents on Saturday attended the Congressional District 30 Education Initiative held at Desoto High School in Desoto. The summit, featuring presentations by some of the finest educators in North Texas, was convened by District 30 Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and included educators from the Desoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill, Dallas, Duncanville and Grand Prairie Independent School Districts. “Early childhood education is very important,” said Congresswoman Johnson as she addressed the group during the keynote address. “We must ensure that our young people are well-educated. Without a quality education a young person’s future is bleak. I am your voice in Washington, but I need your input. Early childhood

Congresswoman Johnson with participant at Early Childhood summit last Saturday in Desoto education is the key to future success.”

Congresswoman Johnson said that she would continue to do all that she could to ensure that North Texas school districts received the financial support that they needed to make early childhood education a top priority. She thanked the educators and public officials for what they were doing to promote early childhood education. “We must ensure that our young people are well-educated,” said Desoto Mayor Carl Sherman who thanked Congresswoman Johnson’s for her work in Washington regarding education. “Our Congresswoman gets it,” he said. “Early childhood education matters.”

The seven-hour program, which began at 8.30 a.m., featured panels of educators and presentations from national and state leaders. Dr. Libby Doggett, the deputy assistant secretary for policy and early learning in the U.S. Department of Education, encouraged the participants to continue their efforts to mold the minds of young people while they were very young in a video presentation. Dr. Nolan Estes, a former superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District, who is recognized as one of the country’s leading educators, said that professionals on the national, state and local levels must embrace early childhood education. Superintendents from participating school districts spoke about early childhood education program in District 30. The panelists included college presidents, principals, retired educators, hospital administrators and parents who expressed their views regarding the importance of early childhood education. Veteran retired Dallas educators Dr. Roscoe Smith and Dr. Alfred Roberts, the guiding forces behind the Coalition for an Accountable System of Education, also participated in the summit. Other District 30 community leaders who worked diligently to make the summit a success included Mrs. Mavis B. Knight, Mrs. Gloria Lett, Dr. Rosie Collins Sorrells and Mrs. Verna Mitchell. “I am very proud of the outstanding work that is taking place in District 30 regarding education,” Congresswoman Johnson said. “Early childhood education is where it all begins.”

Audacity of Citizenship continued from page 5 practices. The sound of our nation might play less dissonant and more harmonious if we removed hate speech from the protection of the First Amendment. We might have more peace in the streets if more Police Officers were Peace Officers first-and-foremost, committed to protect and serve the community. Mr. President, if our youth felt empowered by their own citizenship that in principle renders them visible rather than invisible, audible rather than silent, I believe they would take ownership of this American experiment and protect it with their voices, their votes and their lives. They might begin to see their communities as launch points for opportunity and not traps and dead ends. They might learn to challenge what they see as disingenuous

WWW.TEXASMETRONEWS.COM rhetoric, propaganda, spin and hype by positive means until the hype becomes reality. Empowered by the bold, audacity of their own citizenship, our youth, from Head Start programs to our colleges and universities might begin to see education, employment, entrepreneurship and a place in the world community as artists, bankers, scientists, soldiers, scholars, lawyers, linguists and diplomats as their futures and not see athletics, entertainment or gangs and violence as their only hope. Finally Sir, we adults must begin to see one another as citizens and view one another as equal under the framework of our Constitution regardless of race, creed, gender, or economic status. If we do not, the math will never add up, the experiment will never work. If we refuse to treat one another as valued equals, as brothers and sisters and as fellow Americans without hesitation or reservation, another trigger will be pulled and another body will lie dead in the street, and

I hear your voice more clearly now when you speak of: “a tradition based on the simple idea that we have a stake in one another, and that what binds us together is greater than what drives us apart, and that if enough people believe in the truth of that proposition and act on it, then we might not solve every problem, but we can get something meaningful done.” The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream” Barack Obama Mr. President, some of us are weary of marching, we’re ready to run. The Dallas Chapter of The Links, Incorporated recently presented Funnyraiser: An Evening of Jokes & Jazz, featuring Comedian Tommy Davidson and renowned flutist Bobbi Humphrey. The Dallas Chapter, The Links, Incorporated was organized by Mrs. Fannie C. Smith in November 1957. The charter members were Rowena Blackmon, Jimmie Brashear, Esther Browne, Maria Burke, Etta Culmer, Marion Dillard, Annette Flowers, Vareta Gully, Pauline Lane, Frances McShann, Ruth Shelton, Amanda Smith, Fannie Smith and Ruth White. Over the years, the Dallas Chapter has been an awardwinning chapter, having received awards of excellence at Western Area Conferences and National Assemblies for programs that have significantly impacted the Dallas community.

Selma @50: Malcolm X on my mind for Historical Ride By Thomas Muhammad I hadn't driven from Dallas to Selma in maybe eight years, but it was the way I had chosen to take this historical trip. It had been after all 50 years since that infamous terroristic attack when white racist police storm troopers beat and gassed 600 innocent unarmed peaceful civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. During my drive I played over a dozen speeches of Brother Malcolm X driving to Selma and back to Dallas ending with his "Last Message" speech, which turned out to be the most powerful presentation Malcolm ever made because it came 17 days after he had spoken to over 500 people at Brown Chapel Church in Selma, Alabama and one day after his home had been firebombed while he, his wife Betty and their four young daughters slept on a snowy night. This speech brings the righteous movement of black people in America then and now more into focus. Over the years I've found that only by listening to Malcolm's speeches in their "entirety" can you really get a full sense of where we were and where we should be going as a people in America.

A few simple damn quotes like jobs, please don't try and milk of the Executive Board of the "By Any Means Necessary" toast Malcolm in attempts to National Voting Rights Museum will do the job. In fact, make your white "friends" & Institute in Selma. I I maintain that it is knew it was going to because today we be a moment filled don't have a "Malcolm with trivial "pomp & voice speaking on the circumstance" and it national level" the was. masses of black people But since our are very clearly in group hosts this such disarray. I totally annual "Jubilee" event cringed recently when which highlights all I read a column written the told and untold by one of these sohistory leading up to called "high profile that fateful Sunday, Negroes" basically March 7, 1965 when trying to turn Malcolm those heroic marchers into some type of were beaten, I had a passivist, because duty to come. Many idiot listening to his people have made speeches after that trip, up until amenable to him. the mistake of quoting that "600 he was assassinated by some lost Hell, just get some new black marchers were beaten" government-inspired conspiracy, friends or move to a black area. which is not true. That said, jealous-minded "wish I was this Just simply back the hell off and after getting into Selma I made awesome" Negroes would know leave Malcolm alone, thank you! sure to revisit all of the places this! We demand that you colored Back to the Selma trip. where I knew members of the folks who feel there's something I must be honest however, Student Nonviolent Coordinating about Malcolm's fire that you and say I really hadn't wanted Committee (SNCC) did like, but don't want to jeopardize to make this particular trip, even movement work; places like friendships with your white though I had come each year Lowdnes County where the Black friends or lose your corporate for over 15 years as a member Panther Party was founded.

The famous "Tent City" area along Highway 80 where black sharecroppers sought refuge after being evicted by white landowners simply because they registered to vote. The marker where New Yorker and march volunteer Viola Liuzzo was killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan for giving a ride to a black teenage male who had marched from Selma to Montgomery. Years later it was discovered that an FBI informant was riding in the car when the Klan shot Ms. Liuzzo. Her passenger, Leroy Motten, a member of SNCC at the time who quickly smeared some of Ms. Liuzzo's blood on himself and played dead was sent out of Selma by his parents because they feared he would be found out and killed. Brother Leroy is still alive living in New York and refuses to return to his hometown of Selma. Yeah I know I sound too militant when talking about Selma and that many are looking for stories of the happy jubilant faces seen on television and on the front pages of newspapers. But like Malcolm would say "I'm not the kind of person whose going to tell you what you want to hear, I'm gonna to tell you the truth whether you like it or not!"

always looking for a scam or deal, but that was his son and he had to avenge his death. So there were two sons, both at odds with their fathers but both fathers willing to die or kill for those same offspring. This job calls for a pro. In walks poet, rapper, actor Common; a hitman brought in to kill the Gravedigger and his son. A recent Oscar winner for his musical collaboration with singer John Legend, Common, who also starred in the emotion-filled “Selma,” gives a stunning performance as he hunts down the Gravedigger and his son. The Gravedigger wants one night to make things right. In the meantime, viewers will get more than their share of twists and turns as this very long night produces some very interesting results. In “Run All Night” its clear, eventually you have to answer to, or pay the piper. This movie is interesting, gripping, intense, suspenseful, frightening and thought-provoking. A Review of Get Hard

Hardly Forgettable By Eva D. Coleman

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have teamed up for a film that moviegoers are bound to remember. While Get Hard has a stronghold on edgy adult humor, it also provides a comical look at class and race. James King, played by Ferrell, sees his success as an investment industry manager plummet due to accusations of fraud. As a result, he is sentenced to prison and seeks help from Hart’s character, Darnell Lewis, to get in shape for life inside the San Quentin prison walls. Lewis is a mobile car detail business owner whose closest encounter with a hard life is recounting and reciting scenes from the movie Boys in the Hood. As a way to earn a large sum of money he desperately needs, he creates and brings to life an elaborate Prison Readiness Program to assist King. Earlier in the film, long before King is accused of fraud and sentenced, and as he sifts through 100 dollar bills to tip Lewis two dollars for washing his car, he tells Lewis, “Success is a mindset.” This served as one of the most memorable lines from the movie. Lewis is an African-American entrepreneur who wants more for his family. His goal is to measure up to success by obtaining a home in a nice neighborhood so that his child can go to school in a safe environment. The film also makes light of how sometimes, out of desperation to get ahead, adults place children in grown-up situations to garner sympathy. Such is the case in the scene where Lewis places his child

Ask Alma

By Cheryl Smith Well, if you’re looking for action, you’re in the right theater! Why did I think I was watching The Godfather 2015? Or, The Warriors, Part 2? One thing is clear, as was the case in the epic series from last century or the cult favorite, and that is family first and fight til the end. In this Warner Bros. Pictures action thriller written by Brad Ingelsby and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Oscar nominee Liam Neeson is bent on saving the life of his son, who despises him and doesn’t seem to have a clue that he wouldn’t be alive if not for the father he’s trying to get away from. Neeson plays a Brooklyn hitman with deep mob roots. Known as the Gravedigger, he’s sent many to their grave and has always managed to avoid jail time. The intense Vincent D’Onofrio continues to appear with the dogged determination he displays in the hit television series, Law & Order Criminal Intent. In “Run All Night,” D’Onofrio wants to end his 30-year journey to bring the hit man to justice. And he’s not the only one trying to get to the Gravedigger. When the Gravedigger kills his old friend’s son who is about to kill his son, it’s on! So now you have the two mob buddies going up against one another. Death is apparent, but whose? The Gravedigger, a washed-out gangster who looks decades older than his 55 years and his best friend, Shawn Maguire, played by the menacing Ed Harris, who is trying to be an upstanding businessman, have probably come to the end of their road.Maguire knew his son wasn’t worth anything,

on the phone, encouraging her to “act” like he showed her, in attempts to get a home loan. There’s also hoodie humor. While King is searching inside his freshly-washed ride for the key, he is startled by a hoodie-wearing Lewis who attempts to give the car key to him. King immediately sees it as a holdup situation. This scene pokes fun at the black male in a hoodie stereotype. Get Hard does more than push the envelope. It pushes a case of priority mail with return receipt. Some may want to return to sender. There’s a priority on funny with a return lesson of what is now acceptable as visuals on-screen. There are graphic sexual scenes, even some that made moviegoers in the theater gasp. This is definitely not a kid-friendly movie, so please leave your children at home! Get Hard is full of messages and surprises. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the title of one of Hart’s movies and stand-up comedy tour, Laugh at My Pain. Hart and Ferrell’s characters in Get Hard provide a poignant look at morality as it relates to success. It shows how success can be painful, quickly leading to a lonely road of abandonment when you fall from it. The film also injects humor into sensitive topics of class, race, gender, sexual orientation and culture. It reminds us that when life gets hard, it helps to laugh along the way.

Dear Alma I am a 50-year-old field service engineer who travels 75 percent of the year for work. I love my job and appreciate the opportunity that I am able to travel around the world. No, I’m not in the military, so I can pick and choose where I decide to reside long term. Basically, the problem is maintaining long distant relationships with my family, friends and holding down a love life. I try to stay in touch with my family and friends through cell phone calls and Facebook but sometimes it’s just not enough. I miss them when I’m traveling and honestly, it’s hard to maintain a healthy adult relationship with a woman without her eventually telling me I’m away too much. I’m single, active and I would consider myself to be handsome. How would you suggest I meet a woman who would understand my situation and consider being in this type of a relationship? Lamont in Ohio Lamont from Ohio, yes, I’m putting you on blast, cause this is the first time I’ve run across, a truly handsome (yes girls, I saw his picture), and gainfully employed engineer with benefits, who’s discussing how difficult it is to maintain a long distance healthy adult relationship. The first thing that comes to my mind is, “Seek and ye shall find, my brotha ~ you came to the right place, LOL.” I’m here to agree with you sweetheart, there’s no doubt about it, long distance relationships (LDR’s) take an enormous amount of hard work, but then again, a regular in your face, every day relationship does, too. I say, navigate the negativity, as long as the two of you are serious about your commitment and devotion to each another, a LDR can be quite successful. In my opinion, a LDR requires two mature adults who are completely confident in their own right. Each has got to be comfortable in their own skin and not looking to be completed or validated by the other. All lines of communication must remain open and honest always. You’ve gotta trust each other. That’s super important! With today’s technology options, you can keep in touch daily, practically face to face. I’m sure you’ve heard it said before, absence does make a loving heart grow fonder. Can you see it in your minds eye? Lawddy, can you imagine anticipating the next time you’ll see each other? Wheew, kool it down, this columns rated: PG, LOL. I could go on and on with the positives, but no need, I’m sure you feel me. Evidently you’ve been looking in all the wrong places or you’d be hooked up by now. Today’s the day to steer yourself in a new direction. Start looking to find a woman who’s pursuing her dreams, occupying her time, joyfully participating in her life. Since you’re on the road most of the time, I’m sure this task won’t be easy. Soooo, you know me, I just can’t help myself, I’ll see what I can do to help you out. Ladies: If you’re interested in contacting Lamont, shoot me an email. I see springtime and love just around the corner. Alma -

Forgiven and Forgive Spiritually Speaking by James A. Washington I am re-reading a book that I highly recommend by Beth Moore, Jesus, the One and Only. It reminds me rather vigorously that forgiveness is still a critical concept in the life of so many so called Christians, who profess faith as their spiritual cornerstone. The book is turning my soul inside out because it vividly reinforces to me that I am getting prayer answered with each chapter and that realization is the impetus for this column. Back to forgiveness! How many of you repent, but remain in a guilty state of mind because you really don’t believe God will forgive you your acknowledged transgressions? If there was ever a challenge to faith, this is it. Deep down inside, you can’t really live a life of spiritual freedom, because you have never thought God would really forgive you for all that ‘sinnin’ you used to do and sometimes miss, even today. I bring this up because I believe you and I are dealing with another clever trick of the devil. If you really don’t believe you’ve been forgiven, you keep asking God to forgive you. Now follow me for a minute. If you keep asking for something that is already done, the mere prayer insults the God who took care of this for you. Enter the devil. Since you cannot accept your own forgiveness, you cannot stand on the faith you profess in God. Hence, you cannot live the life God has cleared for you to embark upon. That’s a hypocrite. Enter Jesus. He took care of that. You are forgiven. Your faith in Him allows you to accept that forgiveness and move on in freedom, which brings you the courage necessary for the testimony that undoubtedly will help others. The ensuing

behavior change in you lets the world know your faith is real. That’s a believer. Some might say that’s a soldier for the Lord. Anyway you look at it, the basis for faith rests in the belief of who Jesus was, what He did, why He did it and who He did it for, i.e. you and me and anybody who looks like us. Face it. You are forgiven; not because I say so, but because Christ says so. Deal with it please. With this truth, also comes a peace that defies understanding; a peace that most assuredly will set you free. It does not matter your degree of sin, your quantity or your perceived propensity to sin again. Christ did not and does not discriminate on that basis. Remember, you had nothing to do with this. God’s grace is what I’m talking about. That forgiveness thing should resonate in your soul when it collides with that grace thing. It’s up to us, you and me, to accept it. And when we do, something wonderful happens. You begin to see yourself as God sees you. You begin to understand the beauty of salvation and oddly enough, you truly want others to understand this gift also. Your testimony takes shape and your words are then shaped around the blessing that is Jesus Christ. Reread Luke and the tears that washed the Savior’s feet. “Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, for she loved so much…” Luke 7:47. The answer to your being able to forgive yourself lies not within you but within the One who has already forgiven you. May God bless and keep you always.

James

At a meeting held by the three institutions, a focus group of sorts dished ideas and findings on the surveys that have told the story of the residents of South Dallas. “We are measuring conditions that may vary from street to street, said Dr.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Grade: A Page 4

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

Grade: C “In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming acceleration of policies that will take America down the wrong track. The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve. (The office of John Cornyn of Texas was contacted but did See 100 DAYS, page 19

TIME TO FORGIVE?

In having the conversation about building within South Dallas, many issues arise with respect to GWENDOLYNand JONES education business in Ask The Advocate See ROAD, page 19

PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “no and voting “yes mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa.
