Concealed carry permit holders kill hundreds By Freddie Allen NNPA Senior Washington Correspondent
WASHINGTON (NNPA) – George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager in Sanford, Fla., three years ago was involved in another shooting in the Sunshine State, again raises questions about concealed carry permits and the billion-dollar gun industry that advocates for legislation aimed GEorge Zimmerman at making it easier for Americans to carry firearms everywhere, all of the time. Matthew Apperson of Winter Springs, Fla., who said that Zimmerman threatened him following a road rage incident last year, claimed that he was acting in self-defense when he fired a single shot through the passenger side window of the truck that Zimmerman was driving. Last Friday, police charged Apperson with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle, according to the Orlando Sentinel. The dispute with Apperson follows a series of events where Zimmerman has been accused of threatening people with guns. In September 2013, just a few months after Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder, his estranged wife and her father said that Zimmerman threatened them with a gun and in November 2013, Zimmerman’s then-girlfriend accused him of threatening her with a shotgun. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Don West, Zimmerman’s lawyer, said that his client was armed and but didn’t wave the gun or shoot at anyone during the altercation with Apperson. West added that Zimmerman has a concealed weapons permit and often travels with a gun for protection. Despite the self-defense claims propped up by the supporters of concealed carry laws, the Violence Policy Center (VPC), a NONPROFIT group that seeks to address gun violence as a public health crisis, concealed carry permits holders are more likely to kill themselves or others during non-self defense events. The center tracks fatalities associated with concealed carry gun permit holders at ConcealedCarryKillers.org and found that 743 people have been killed, including 17 law enforcement officers. “In the vast majority of the 561 incidents documented (468, or 83 percent), the concealed carry permit holder either committed suicide (222), has already been convicted (184), perpetrated a murder-suicide (46), or was killed in the incident (16),” stated a press release about the website. More than 70 people have been killed in Florida alone by concealed carry gun permit holders. In a press release about ConcealedCarryKillers.org, Kristen Rand, the legislative director of VPC, said that research shows that concealed carry permit holders are
involved in murders or suicides far more often than they act in self-defense. Rand added: “The NRA is relentlessly lobbying state and federal lawmakers to allow more concealed handguns in public despite the clear evidence that doing so puts more people in danger.”
AROUND THE WORLD
Remembering the fallen on Memorial Day By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Eddie Bernice Johnson represents the state of Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives.
On May 25th, the people of our nation will pause to commemorate fallen members of the military, as we celebrate Memorial Day, a time of reflection and resolve. Today, we memorialize fallen patriots who gave their lives so that we might live ours. Because of their valor, America remains a beacon of freedom, justice and peace. Some people will spend time praying, while others will visit cemeteries to place flowers and flags on the graves of family members and friends. They will even visit the graves of those they did not know. Since the time of the Revolutionary War, more than one million courageous individuals have paid the ultimate price to protect our nation and the principles upon which our democracy was founded. Many of them went into battle well aware of the possibility that they would never return to their loved ones. These brave men and women were of every color, from various parts of the country and held many religious beliefs. Despite these differences, all of them believed in the sacredness of freedom, not only for Americans but for all men and women threatened by the loss of liberty. Today, we honor the memory of America’s fallen heroes and express our deepest gratitude to the family members who shared their greatest treasures to ensure the safety of our nation. As we honor the memory of our fallen soldiers, we remain keenly aware of those servicemen and women who remain in areas of war and conflict. We pray daily for their safety, and remain eternally grateful for their commitment and dedication. While we can never repay our debt for their sacrifices, we remain committed to upholding our nation’s sacred trust by providing the resources and support members of our armed services need during their times of service, and when they return to civilian life. I will always fight to ensure that they have the benefits that they have earned and deserve. Their sacrifices have contributed to the greatness of our nation, and they will always be remembered for their valor and their deeds.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, as well as the home medicine cabinet. Austin - Representative Helen Giddings (Dallas-D) recently recognized the outstanding service of the six retiring members of the Dallas City Council. Standing on the dais, before the full House of Representatives, councilmembers Vonceil Jones Hill, Carolyn Davis, Sheffie Kadane and Mayor Pro Tern Tennell Atkins received a warm reception. The House passed a congratulatory resolution, authored by Representative Giddings,to commend their work at the helm of Dallas government over the last eight years. The resolution included commendation of councilmembers Jerry Allen and former Mayor Dwaine Caraway, who were not able to make the trip to Austin. "Their tenure was uncertain. Little mistakes were often blown out of proportion. Major accomplishments were sometimes overlooked. While they have not always agreed with one another, they agreed enough to leave a rich and lasting legacy in the City of Dallas," Giddings said. Due to term limitations, these officials must retire from service next month. Giddings cited many of the accomplishments of our city during their tenure on the Council. "They courageously pursued the goals of our expanding city by overseeing some of the greatest capital projects in Dallas' history." Giddings continued,"working, all the while, with our police department to reduce crime across the city. We will all miss their service on the Dallas City Council. This is an opportunity to recognize the significance of their work for the City of Dallas and all of our citizens. We honored them for their service and offer them our best wishes for the next chapter in their lives." As they departed the House Chamber, they spoke briefly with Governor Abbott. Representative Helen Giddings serves the cities of Dallas, DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Glenn Heights, Hutchins, Lancaster,Wilmer, as well as part of Duncanville.

Curry: Michael Eric Dyson v. Cornel West
It’s the academic version of the world heavyweight championship boxing matches between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in Zaire labeled “The Rumble in the Jungle and the Philippine’s “Thriller in Manila. Whatever label you attach to it, the public feud between Professors Cornel West and Michael Eric Dyson, two of our most gifted intellectuals, cannot be ignored. Dyson’s original opus weighed in at nearly 10,000 words – four to five times the length of a typical magazine feature story – and landed plenty of punches to West’s body of work. Dyson charged that Obama’s inauguration marked “a pronounced and decades-long scholarly decline for West. He explained, “It is not only that West’s preoccupations with Obama’s perceived failures distracted him, though that is true; more accurate would be to say that the last several years revealed West’s paucity of serious and fresh intellectual work, a trend far longer in the making. “West is still a Man of Ideas, but those ideas today are a vain and unimaginative repackaging of his earlier hits. He hasn’t published without aid of a co-writer a single scholarly book since Keeping Faith, which appeared in 1993, the same year as Race Matters. Despite other issues addressed by Dyson in his tome, at its core, this heavyweight fight is personal. In the interest of full disclosure, I know both Cornel and Michael and count each

Princeton doctoral dissertation, let me have it in the national media. ‘It was during an appearance with Tavis Smiley on Democracy Now, shortly after Obama’s reelection. ‘I love Brother Mike Dyson,’ West said. ‘But we’re living in a society where everybody is up for sale. Everything is up for sale. ‘And he and Brother Sharpton and Sister Melissa and others, they have sold their souls for a mess of Obama pottage. And we invite them back to the black prophetic tradition after Obama leaves. But at the moment, they want insider access, and they want to tell those kinds of lies. ‘They want to turn their back to poor and working people. And it’s a sad thing to see them as apologists for the Obama administration in that way, given the kind of critical background that all of them have had at some point.’

of them as a friend. Except for the length of Dyson’s article, the only thing surprising is that he waited this long to reply to West’s attacks on him. And readers had to wait almost until the end of the article to learn what West specifically said about Dyson that so enraged him. “In November 2012, West, friend and mentor, one of the three men whose name is on my
As Dyson wrote, “West was just warming up.â€? Dyson continued.“After a fiftieth anniversary celebration of the 1963 March on Washington on the National Mall, a celebration Sharpton led and at which I spoke, West argued that Martin Luther King Jr. ‘would’ve been turning over in his grave’ at at Sharpton’s ‘coronation’ as the ‘bona fide house negro of the Obama plantation,’ supported by ‘the Michael Dysons and others who’ve really prostituted themselves intel-lectually in a very, very ugly and vicious way.’ And recently, while promoting Black Prophetic Fire, West argued ‘the Sharptons, the Melissa Harris- Perrys, and the Michael Eric Dysons ‌ end up being these cheerleaders and bootlickers for the President, and I think it’s a disgrace when it comes to
the black prophetic tradition of Malcolm and Martin.’ West responded to Dyson briefly on Facebook, saying: “Character assassination is the refuge of those who hide and conceal these issues in order to rationalize their own allegiance to the status quo. Dyson responded to West’s response and pushback from other quarters with a second, 2,623-word article in The New Republic. Regarding his decision to publicly answer West,
Dr. Cornel West
Dyson, quoting old folks who administered public spankings to children, said, “Where you did it is where you get it. Of all the issues facing Black America – police murders, poverty, mass incarceration, drones, unfair trade policies, electronic surveillance, failing schools, unemployment, Wall Street power, and Israeli occupation of Palestinians, to use part of West’s list of pressing issues – a heavyweight fight between two prized Black intellectuals is an unwanted distraction. Four years ago, I arranged and moderated a conversation between West and Sharpton at a National Newspapers Publishers Association’s convention in Chicago. It was a cordial and respectful conversation. However, it wasn’t long before West personally attacked Sharpton again. So I have little hope that a sit-down between West and Dyson would yield anything beyond a temporary truce. In the end, West and Dyson will be judged not by the amount of flowery venom they can direct at each other – we’ve had more than enough of that already – but whether they can help find solutions for the array of vexing problems that still plague our people.
PERSPECTIVES
w w w.TEX A SMETRONE WS.c om
That’s right-- you have to go back to the polls in June! Election day 2015 in Dallas, TX made some people very happy, while others were very sad, or downright angry. I won’t even waste time talking about the dismal voter turnout! Dallas re-elected its Mayor, Mike Rawlings. For the City Council District 4 seat vacated by term-limited Councilmember Dwaine Caraway, Carolyn King Arnold walked away with the victory in a crowded field where some were hoping for an opportunity to go one-on-one, head-to-head with an opponent. Other victors were the unopposed: Scott Griggs and Adam Medrano in Districts 1 and 2 respectively and Place 11 Lee M. Kleinman, Place 12 Sandy Greyson; Place 13 Jennifer Staubach Gates; and, Place 14 Philip T. Kingston. Then in District 5 - Rick Callahan defeated Jesse Diaz and Sherry Cordova; in District 6 -Monica Alonzo defeated Ozumba Lnuk-X, Daniel "DC" Caldwell, I and Lakolya London; in District 9 - Mark Clayton defeated Christopher Jackson, Darren Boruff, Sam Merten and Will Logg. Now it’s runoff time! Voters will go back to the Polls on June 13 for District 3 - Casey Thomas or Joe Tave;District 7 - Tiffinni A. Young or Kevin Felder; District 8 - dianne gibson or Erik Wilson and District 10 - Paul Reyes or Adam McGough. You can’t begin to guess what the turnout will be, no more than you can predict the weather. One thing is for certain, however, folks need to stop making excuses and begin taking an active interest in the process. To those who offered themselves up for service, thanks! Public service is not easy and a number of
people put forth the effort to take a leadership role. There was the passion and people know they were sincere. Candidates, please don’t be discouraged. You are needed. You must continue to be on the forefront of issues. Just like the title means nothing if you don’t do anything with it, you don’t need a title to do something. And for the victors, there’s nothing noble or righteous about being ungracious in victory. Graciousness is an attribute that is praiseworthy in victory or defeat. While many witnessed unsportsmanlike behavior from some of the candidates, there is hope those few misguided individuals took some time to realize that their actions were not appropriate and a reality check is needed. You can have an opponent without making an enemy. And as we celebrate the 90th birthday of Malcolm X, remember it was that wise visionary who said that the issues effecting our community are bigger than any one individual and when you focus on personalities, the community suffers because the issues aren’t addressed. We have too many issues in our communities and we don’t have time to focus on personalities or egos.
Dallas City Council runoff election is June 13, 2015
B.B. - The King Miles’ Musings By Miles Jaye Davis Miles Jaye is a musician, singer, author, actor, chef and award-winning writer.
Before Hendrix, Clapton and the Beatles was B.B. Before Elvis, the Stones and long before the Ramones was B.B. Before the Beach Boys, the Dead and Kiss was B.B. Before the Godfather, Michael and Prince was the King. And in case you think his only contribution was the Blues, While he was King and Lucille was Queen he touched the world and changed the rules.
With a language unique to music, he spoke to us all, in a language of love. Sometimes hurt but never angry, sometimes sad but never defeated. More than any other music, blues is irony, humor, hope, it’s healing, it’s universal. It knows no borders or boundaries, it’s interracial, bipartisan and non-denominational. So here’s to a Mississippi Blues Boy, who saw men hang and swing. A humble child of God, who would one day be crowned King. The thrill may be gone, but B.B. will live on and on.

Quit Playin’ Vincent Hall Vincent L. Hall is an author and award-winning columnist.
Michelle and Malcolm!! The First Lady threw down the gauntlet at the historic Tuskegee University last week. You knew it had to be a damn good commencement speech when the Washington Post reported… “Of course, Obama’s truthtelling was met with the usual and predictable harangues from the reactionary right. Laura Ingraham called the first lady’s commencement address “a litany of victimization.” Rush Limbaugh accused her of “playing the race card.” Sean Hannity said Obama displayed a “bitterness” and a “lack of appreciation for the opportunities” afforded her and the president. And Mark Levin said the two of them have “done more damage to race relations in this country since George Wallace, there I said it and I mean it.” When balled up together, all of these acerbic comments just proved the point Obama made as she ran through some of the name-calling she and her husband have endured.” First lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama has had enough and it’s starting to show. She and her husband, President Barack Hussein Obama, have gracefully shouldered the brunt of some brutal racism for the last six years. The First Fam are about to chunk deuces at these fools, so they might as well “play the dozens” on the way out. My grandfather had less than a sixth grade education, but he would often tell me the facts of life in a way that were beneficial to my mind, body and soul. Although Ed Hall had no degrees, licenses or certifications in psychology, he knew how to get relief. Papa always said there is no more exhilarating experience to relieve your mind than personally inviting an SOB to kiss your naked assurance. I am glad that the First Lady and her history making husband are about to get that privilege. You may not agree with me, but this presidency has been a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, children of all races can honestly be told they can do and be whatever they want. It was a myth before
2008. We elected a Black man to the highest office in the nation and the most significant post in the world. And don’t get it twisted, Black folks didn’t elect him, White folks looked beyond the mystery to change history. From the sang-froid of his acceptance address on Election Day 2008 that made Jesse Jackson tear up, right through the most energizing inauguration in the history of the United States; Barack Obama has made us proud. But before he could finish the unifying speech, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his minions were plotting to bring him down by any means necessary. They beckoned Conservative Neanderthals to come out of their covert caverns of cockeyed criticism and red-meat racism. Alas, Fox News was re-born and overt racism has thrived ever since. For all the good that has been wrought by electing Barack Obama and showcasing his enigmatic wife, the downfalls are equally rough. First, he was politically forced to divorce himself from his own spiritual mentor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright Jr., the same man who spoke words of encouragement and vision into the Obama clan (no pun intended) for so many years. Soon after Obama’s election, the elected, appointed, declared, and a bunch of wannabees the Republican/Tea Party, have made vile and visible efforts to denigrate his name, falsify his presidential record, and to pervert his purpose as a man and as a dulyelected leader. But since it’s the 90th birthday celebration for Malcolm X, let me remix what he once said; “Your chickens are about to come home to roost.” In other words, that same spirit of hatred that the GOP has put out into the atmosphere, is about to come back on them. I look forward to the day when Barack and Michelle can tell America about itself. Not out of a spirit of spite or as a reach toward retaliation, but with sobering class. American needs to be told exactly how it is and Michelle is about to go Malcolm!!

What would happen if God RSVP’d Spiritually Speaking James A. Washington This may sound familiar to some of you as I am commenting on an earlier article. There is a passage in scripture that tells us to be careful about how we entertain strangers because they in fact might be angels in disguise. Now I don’t know if you believe in angels, but have you ever wondered what you would do if you had the opportunity to entertain God. I mean what would you do if God was coming over for dinner? What would you do if you knew God was responding favorably to your invitation to come and visit? I’ve thought about that often as it relates to prayer. After all, isn’t prayer an official invitation for God to enter into and become a permanent part of our living breathing eternal existence? The question is what would you do if His answer was yes? Guess who’s coming to dinner! Serious contemplation of that convinces me that I’m not ready, but I will be forever extending the invitation to the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. As with Enoch, the very thought of being able to walk with God is pretty much mind boggling. The very thought that the invitation to be lead by the Holy Spirit has been accepted would humble any man, or, at least it should. As I pray and beseech the Lord to let me empty myself of those things that stand in the way of the Holy Spirit taking hold of my life, I know deep down inside that if it actually happened, I’d be changed forever. Try to imagine a lifestyle predicated upon living for Christ. You can certainly understand the angst one might feel when you connect the dots of prayer to the words of faith
w w w.TEX A SMETRONE WS.COM
to the actions of living. Our actions are a direct link to whether or not we understand and accept what we’re actually praying for. Each day I ask the Lord to allow me to do one thing, only one, and that would be viewed by others as behaving and acting in the role of a man of God; not necessarily a preacher but a practitioner of Christian belief. That may sound somewhat pretentious to some of you, but I merely believe that during the course of any day, someone whom I come in contact with should respond to that contact with a reality that I’m a practicing believer. See Jesus in me, PLEASE!... somebody, anybody, stranger or angel. Many a night time prayer, after morning a conviction to do better, has me searching for that kind of thought or gesture, that thing I did on that day simply because I love Jesus. Most times I come up wanting. It did not happen on that day; not one thing did I do or say that wasn’t motivated by self aggrandizement. Now there are other days where I and others have tangible evidence of my at least trying to witness, give testimony, offer a listening ear or sharing an able hand. God was there in thought word and deed. That then becomes and ends as an awesome day. The key I think is wanting to and not having to. If you believe you have to do something, you might be tempted to keep score. In this case if you do that, you lose every time. We know we cannot earn God’s respect or His attention. Jesus took care of that for us. But you can ‘become’ enough. You can evolve enough so that God just might come and walk with you as He did Enoch. The reward is God’s to give, not ours to expect. So the next time you stop and pray, think about what you’re really praying for or, why you’re praying at all. Then consider your actions in relation to that particular moment. Hopefully, it all adds up to the realization that God is ready to take you up on your invitation. I can’t imagine what that conversation would be for you, but for me I pray for it every single day. May God bless and keep you always.
James

I am the boss, aren’t I? Dear Alma, I have worked for a large cleaning company for the past 17 years. Our supervisor recently retired and I was promoted to that job. Once I was promoted, we hired a new guy to join our team who has been doing an outstanding job. He is one of the best employees and cleaners I’ve worked with for a long time. He is a man of few words and shows up every day to get the job done. Every year we pick one person to receive a bonus for a job well done. The supervisor is the person who picks the WINNER. Without a doubt I thought this guy deserved the bonus. When the others heard he got the award they were mad and whispering behind my back that it was unfair for him to get it. Two of our employees have started acting resentful towards me because they said they’ve worked with me longer. I keep hearing the gossip and I want to explain why I picked the new guy but my husband says I don’t owe them an explanation. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want our crew to be Help Deserving divided or for them not to like me. Do you think I should call Kids go to College a meeting and tell them why I picked him over the others? Ahhhhh no, Boss Lady! It was your decision and you made it. Believe and trust in yourself. There was a reason you were promoted; stand tall in the new O P P O RT U N I T Y you’ve been appointed. You’ve got to pay the cost to be the boss, and it ain’t no walk in a delightfully scrumptious designer kitchen. Most want to be on top but can’t handle the pressure. When it comes time to make the hard decisions, CONTINUE to trust your gut. You know who’s doing what, how and when. That’s why you were able to hands down, pick the WINNER. Don’t second-guess your abilities because of a few rotten apples filling up your fancy fruit basket. Like the old folks use to say, always judge what you hear by who said it. Seasoned adults understand sometimes they’ll be overlooked for a particular position or won’t get the praise they think they deserve, so is life. We all must CONTINUE to be our best and believe that one day our diligence and superb efforts be rewarded. Complaining is draining and employees who sit around cantankerous, moaning and grumbling all day, can’t be doing a good job. Like I said before, do not explain yourself to the staff. The announcement was made and the BONUS was presented. That’s it, game over. To anyone who feels slighted, tough tootsie roll. Close the chapter on this my darling. You can call a meeting, but don’t mention the award. What you can do is, push and promote teamwork and continue to focus on performance. That’s about all you can control. Don’t allow yourself to be a pushover, I can tell you’re a little softhearted. Put on your big girl bloomers, grab your scrub brush and handle your business. Congratulations o n y o u r promotion. Your loyalty with this company has served you well. —Alma

Remember the King of the Blues - B.B. King
I n just over two weeks, there has been the passing of two kings. Crooner Ben E. King of “Stand By Me” and “Save the Last Dance for Me” fame died on April 30, 2015 and on May 14, 2015, the announcement of B.B. King’s transition took over the airwaves and social media. His reign as King of the Blues has been as long as that of any monarch on earth. Yet B.B. King continued to wear his crown well. At age 76, he was still light on his feet, singing and PLAYING the blues with relentless passion. Mr. King passed peacefully in his sleep at 9:40 pm PT on May 14, 2015. He was 89 Time has had no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. For more than half a century, Riley B. King – better known as B.B. King – defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them classics. He was born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola. In his youth, he played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music CAREER. Memphis was where every important musician of t h e South gravitated, and which supported a large musical community where every style of African American music could be found. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most celebrated blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues. B.B.’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio PROGRAM on KWEM out of West
Memphis. This led to steady engagements at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis, and later to a ten-minute spot on blackstaffed and managed Memphis radio station WDIA. “King’s Spot,” became so popular, it was expanded and became the “Sepia Swing Club.” Soon B.B. needed a catchy radio name.
When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar to remind him never to do a crazy thing like fight over a woman. Ever since, each one of B.B.’s trademark Gibson guitars has been called Lucille. Soon after his NUMBER one hit, “Three

O’Clock Blues,” B.B. began touring nationally. In 1956, B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one- night stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small-town cafes, juke joints, and country dance halls to rock palaces, symphony concert halls, universities, resort hotels and amphitheaters, nationally and internationally, B.B. became the most renowned blues musician of the past 40 years. Over the years, B.B. developed one of the world’s most identifiable guitar styles.

He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise and complex vocal-like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indispensable components of rock guitarist’s vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players, from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck. B.B. has mixed traditional blues, jazz, swing, mainstream pop and jump into a unique sound. In B.B.’s words, “When I sing, I play in my mind; the minute I stop singing orally, I start to sing by PLAYING Lucille.” In 1968, B.B. played at the Newport Folk Festival and at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West on bills with the hottest contemporary rock artists of the day who idolized B.B. and helped to introduce him to a young white audience. I n “69, B.B. was chosen by the Rolling Stones TO OPEN 18 American concerts for them; Ike and Tina Turner also played on 18 shows. Lennox one of seven DISD students to receive coveted Gates Scholarship JOIN US AT THE MOVIES
To be singled out among 57,000 of the nation’s high school graduates as a recipient of the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship is a monumental accomplishment for any student. Even more impressive is to have seven students from one school district chosen among this coveted group. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program recently announced that seven Dallas ISD students were selected to receive full scholarships to any accredited college or university of their choice located in the U.S. The scholarships are good through graduation, meaning they are renewable based on program guidelines throughout a student’s higher educational pursuits— from the undergraduate to the master and doctoral levels. The seven students are: Mang Lian, Sung Mawi, and Tika Acharya, all from Emmett J. Conrad High School; Dominique James from Bryan Adams High School; Frank Byers Jr. from South Oak Cliff High School; Victoria Lennox from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts; and Kenneth Robinson, Justin F. Kimball High School. Victoria Lennox peaked the interest of area journalists when she applied to and was accepted for the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists Urban Journalism Workshop. With a very demanding schedule, it’s a wonder that this talented teen has time for anything extra. She is co-chair of the communications committee at Booker T. Washington, a member of the Dallas ISD Teen Board, National Honor Society, and Mu Theta Math Society. She is in the top 13 percent of her class and plans to study journalism at Syracuse University. Already an accomplished actress, the singer and cello player has big plans for the future and with help from mentors from the National Association of Black Journalists, and strong family and community support, expectations are high.
VIctoria Lennox
Victoria enjoys exercising and listening to music. As a child she also starred on the popular TV show, “Barney and Friends.” The Gates program selected 1,000 outstanding graduates from across the country to be part of the 2015 GMS Class. Each student completed an extensive application process and are now eligible to participate in a number of programs and activities, including a leadership conference for freshmen, academic support throughout college, graduate school planning, mentoring and more. Here’s more on the other scholars: Tika Acharya spent the majority of his life in a refugee camp in Nepal without electricity and indoor plumbing. Today, he is the current salutatorian of his senior class and involved in a number of activities at Conrad High School, including tutoring young students as well as older refugees in his neighborhood. He plans to pursue a degree in engineering and business. Sung Mawi grew up in Burma before she had to flee to Malaysia where she worked 13 hour shifts in a factory. Now, in the top 7 percent of her class at Conrad, she a leader inspiring others to excel and seek higher education. She plans to attend college to study accounting.
Before coming to the United States, Mang Lian, who grew up in Myanmar, spent two months traveling through the jungles of Malaysia as he fled Burmese soldiers. Despite having worked more than 100 hours a week in his home country instead of going to school, he moved to the U.S. and learned English in a short time. He is now ranked third in his class at Conrad. Dominique James is currently ranked as valedictorian at Bryan Adams High School where she is captain of the drill team, a member of the Academic Decathlon team and works part time. Her work at school and in the community exemplifies strong leadership, service and academic achievement. Dominique plans to pursue biomedical engineering.

As a student at South Oak Cliff High School, Frank Byers Jr. is ranked as the valedictorian of his class, a talented athlete, class president, and a member of the National Honor Society among many other accomplishments. He plans to major in petroleum engineering and aspires to be a venture capitalist. Class Valedictorian Kenneth Robinson had to push through the tragic loss of his mother during his freshman year, and while it wasn’t easy, his commitment to leadership and excellence helped fuel his drive to succeed. He served as the highest ranking officer in Justin F. Kimball High School’s ROTC program, president of the school’s National Honor Society, student council, the National Academy of Engineering Advisory Board, and others. He plans to pursue his doctorate in physics to help develop new power sources. The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
