Selma, Alabama dealing with KLAN issues

C e c i l Wi l l i a m s o n , p re s i d e n t o f Selma, Alabama City Council, is behind the building of the monument, and has a long history of involvement with secessionist and White supremacy groups including the John Birch Society and the League of the South.

Selma, AL (Black-News.com) -Hank Sanders, Alabama State Senator representing Selma and Dallas County and eight other West Alabama counties, is challenging the building of a Monument to General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Sanders commented, "Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the richest slave dealers in the South. Under General Nathan Bedford Forrest leadership, black soldiers who had surrendered were murdered in cold blood at Fort Pillow, Tennessee during the Civil War." After the Civil War, General Forrest took leadership of the Klan becoming its first Grand Wizard and built it into a national force that terrorized Black people across this country for decades. There is already a monument to Forrest at Live Oak Cemetery. We do not need a bigger monument of Forrest in Selma, the symbol for voting rights and freedom all over the world.”

"We have worked to eliminate memorials and anything else that honors Nathan Bedford Forrest including changing the name of an almost entirely black housing project just outside of town named for decades NBF Homes that stood for Nathan Bedford Forrest. We successfully renamed the housing project to MBA Homes in honor of Minnie B. Anderson," Sanders said. He continued, "In the year 2000, we successful fought to remove a Forrest monument from a public building, the Smitherman Building. It was at that time, that the monument was relocated to the Live Oak Cemetery. He continued,“We were not pleased then and continue to be displeased now that a memorial that honors a slave trader and a murderer of Black people is present in our town." Sanders also protested a document on the monument which called his wife, Faya Rose Toure; a "Domestic

AROUND THE WORLD Terrorist. "No public property should be used to defame anyone, said Sanders. "A terrorist is a criminal. It is a sad day when a person who protest a terrorist like Nathan Bedford Forrest is called a "domestic terrorist" and it’s posted on public property." Sanders said there was an assault on his wife, Faya Rose Toure. "The supervisor of the construction project grabbed and pushed my wife. He then put his finger in her face. I will not stand for anyone assaulting any one. I certainly will not stand for anyone assaulting my wife or any member of my family. This supervisor of the Nathan Bedford Forrest Monument must face justice." The Friends of Forrest, a Confederate organization and cofounded by Cecil Williamson and Patricia Godwin are behind the building of the monument. "They [Friends of Forrest] have been raising money for years for a permanent monument to Forrest by selling a packet of information that was originally published by the KKK right after the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march. They call the packet, Truth Uncensored and it a t t a c k s t h e Vo t i n g R i g h t s Movement." Among several articles in the packet are booklets called, Sex and the Civil Rights Movement - The

True Selma Story, that falsely claims the Selma to Montgomery march was a drunken orgy; and Nightriders, The Truth Surrounding Viola Liuzzo’s Killing falsely charges Mrs. Liuzzo with being a prostitute. You can see a description of all the racist materials in the packet at www.firstfreedom.net/ 68.htm Cecil Williamson is the president of the Selma City Council and has a long history of involvement with secessionist and White supremacy groups including the John Birch Society and the League of the South. "We exposed his attendance at a Nathan Bedford Forrest birthday celebration in July 2010. Along with the Confederate flag, a racist caricature of a Black child eating watermelon was the display for their water melon station." In spite of the fact that the Selma City Council was presented this evidence and other detailed evidence of Williamson’s racism," Sanders said, "they failed to vote him out of the office of president of Council." Sanders said he has had enough. "I wrote a column on Nathan Bedford Forrest eleven years ago. We are still struggling with this issue today. This matter has gone way too far. We must take a stand. That’s why I am speaking out now. That’s why others must speak out."

Shooting circumstances cause mixed feelings, feelings of distrust

James G. Harper

According to a statement released by the Dallas Police Department’s Levi Williams, Manager III--Community Affairs & Employee Communications: On July 24, 2012, at 4:57 pm, the Dallas Police Department received a 911 call stating 5 to 6 Latin males were forcing a black male in the house located at 5316 Bourquin Street. It was reported that the Latin males had guns and the black male’s hands were tied behind his back. Officer Brian Rowden, #8477, responded to the call along with two other officers. When officers knocked on the door, a male opened the door but immediately slammed it upon seeing the police officers. Officers moved to cover off the various exits from the residence. Officers were able to see into the house and observed a pistol sitting on a table which was picked up by one of the four occupants who all began fleeing the location. Officer Rowden began chasing James Harper on foot. During the foot pursuit, which included the

jumping of three fences, Officer Rowden and Harper engaged in multiple physical confrontations. Officer Rowden noticed Harper repeatedly grab an object in his pants pocket and believed it may have been the gun observed earlier in the house. At one point, Harper kicked Officer Rowden in the chest. During one of the fights, Officer Rowden was attempting to handcuff Harper but Harper knocked the handcuffs out of Officer Rowden’s grasp. As the fighting continued, Officer Rowden realized that he was exhausted and was beginning to lose the fight. He was still attempting to keep Harper from pulling the object, which he believed to be a gun, from his pants pocket but could no longer keep a grasp on Harper’s hand. Harper stated to the officer that “You’re just going to have to kill me” as he kept his hand in the pocket where the object was located. Officer Rowden, who was exhausted and in fear for his life, fired his weapon striking Harper in the stomach and hand. Officer Rowden did not have a taser. Harper died at the scene. James G. Harper (B/M/ 03-06-81) had been arrested multiple times. Some of the past charges are as follows: Manufacturing and Delivery of a Controlled Substance Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon Possession of a Controlled Substance Assault on a Public Servant

Evading Arrest or Detention (2 separate counts) Unauthorized Use of Vehicle A search of the house located at 5316 Bourquin Street was conducted after a search warrant was obtained. Some of the items found at the location include the following: 9mm handgun 12 gauge shot gun PCP packaged in 38 separate vials 39 grams of crack cocaine both inside and outside the residence 171 grams of Marijuana 24 grams of Xanex 52 grams of Hydrocodene

Ragsdale disagrees

Former Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem issued the following response to the shooting:

There are several problems associated with this police shooting: The police officer placed himself in a situation that created deadly conflict instead of a peaceful resolutionThe police officer independently pursued the suspect without backup or support. It was stated that the officer was exhausted and did not have any back up Why did he not have the taser to subdue the suspect?

Are we only assigning tasers to officers who are not assigned to South Dallas? The suspect who was not armed was able to overwhelm an armed, trained, professional police officer The other suspects who were pursued by the other officers . . . are they still living? At this time this shooting appears to be unjustifiable

4 Chavis Carter’s death is questionable He was just 21. Some would say he was just beginning to live-- that despite what he had done in his past, he had so many years ahead of him, to prove himself, and to the world that he was, indeed a man. Any hopes of such a reality were snuffed out on July 28 in Jonesboro, Arkansas when Chavis Carter “allegedly committed suicide. He wouldn’t be the first Black male to commit suicide and he won’t be the last. He is also not the first Black male to die under suspicious circum-stances and unfortunately he probably won’t be the last. It appears that Mr. Carter, and two young men were stopped in a truck in Jonesboro, Arkansas. During this routine stop, the two white males were sent on their way after being told that Mr. Carter had a warrant in his home state of Mississippi. Mr. Carter, was frisked twice, however, and according to some police officers it is highly possible that a gun could have been missed during the first search and he could have stashed the gun that was later used to take his life.

“Mr. Carter"was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head. But they had questions too, as information about the case continues to be revealed. The Jonesboro Police department released a video with officers fitting Mr. Carter’s description reenacting the shooting. That same video was viewed by the pathologist who performed the autopsy and issued his ruling of “suicide. The ruling also pointed out that in addition to marijuana, Mr. Carter had oxycodone and methamphetamine in his blood. Could those drugs have contributed to his state of mind? According to the report from the crime lab, “Mr. Carter"was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head. Okay, anything is possible! Since there were no other suspects to be concerned about and no vehicle to wait for a tow truck, what were the officers doing while Mr. Carter maneuvered around in the back seat of the car to retrieve this gun and the shoot See Carter, on Page 5

Romney’s agenda: Class warfare Raise taxes on the rich? “Class warfare the Republicans rail. Any discussion of inequality, says Mitt Romney, should be held privately “in quiet rooms. Yet the Romney agenda for the country opens a new offensive in class warfare — only on the side of the few, not the many. America’s inequality has already reached extremes not seen since 1929 before the Great Depression. In 2010, the richest 1 percent captured an obscene 93 percent of the nation’s income growth. The top 1 percent now has as much wealth as 90 percent of Americans. As Warren Buffett, one of America’s richest men, told New York Times columnist Ben Stein: “There’s class warfare, all right, but it’s my class, the rich class, that’s making war, and we’re winning. Romney and Republicans demand extension of the extra Bush tax cuts that go to those earning more than $250,000 a year. In addition, Romney calls for slashing individual tax rates across the board by 20 percent, eliminating the estate tax that applies only to the multimillionaires and sustaining the concessionary 15 percent tax rate on capital gains income overwhelmingly pocketed by the wealthiest Americans. He promises to pay for these tax cuts by closing “loopholes, but refuses to identify them. But even with the most generous assumptions, the nonpartisan

Speaking Truth to Power By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.

Tax Policy Center — a joint venture of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution — found that the rich don’t collect enough in loopholes to pay for the proposed tax cuts. Romney’s tax plan would end with the richest Americans getting a tax cut while most Americans end up paying more. Class warfare straight up. On spending, Romney claims that he can cut federal spending while increasing spending on the military and putting off his (poisonous) plans for Medicare and Social Security for a decade (so that those 55 and over won’t vote against him). But neither Romney nor running mate Paul Ryan will reveal what they would cut. Ryan’s budget calls for devastating cuts in Medicaid and food stamps. The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that more than three-fifths of the Ryan cuts in the first decade come from programs for the poor. Class warfare again. Add to this the Romney “Bain Capital economic policy. Romney criticizes Obama for not signing more corporate

trade treaties, despite the fact that our trade policies not only ship jobs abroad but rack up more than $1 billion a day in trade deficits, more than half to China. (To be fair, Romney pledges to certify China as a currency violator, but every candidate promises to get tough with China, then folds once in office). Romney also wants to repeal even the modest reforms of Wall Street that Obama got through Congress. He opposes raising the minimum wage and echoes Republican scorn of worker rights and unions. But the decline of unions has contributed to an economy in which workers no longer gain a fair share of the increased productivity and profits that they help to create. Once more, class warfare on the side of the CEOs and against working families. Increasingly a Southern-based “whites only dominated party, Republicans wrap their class warfare into scorn for “those people: poor people of color. Can they consolidate support among white bluecollar workers, even as their policies attack those workers? Divide and conquer is an ancient strategy in warfare and in politics. Will it work for Mitt Romney, so clearly a man of, by and for the 1 percent? We’ll know in November. The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., is the founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Express yourself: Letters from our readers BLACK REPUBLICANS I can't understand how the Republicans can continue to ignore the black elephant in the room and that's the black Republican. It's an oxymoron, as a matter of fact it's the moron with out the oxy! I've been watching the Republican convention and I'm embarrassed for the black Republican because thru out our history there has always been a token that they exploited just to say they are diverse. There is no greater conflict among us than to watch a black Republican defend a party that doesn't have our best interest at heart. It's like back in slavery when a slave escaped to freedom they would send one of us to bring him back, and he would not take the time to think they were both free! I also had to sit and listen to a 24 yearold black Republican female named Chellise Henry talk about how the Republicans freed the slaves as if it happened yesterday and not notice everything that's happened since.

I think the black Republican should put on the Klan capes the Republican party took off when President Obama became president. I know there has always been black Republicans but the ones I have known were in the party to make MONEY and you know how fast we'll sell out for the MONEY!! But my most disappointing moment for black Republicans came in my own house in the form of my 11-year-old grand daughter. You see we were having a discussion and my grand daughter said she hated President Obama and her reasoning came from 4 years ago when she was 7 when they had a mock election at her school and based on that she voted for John McCain. She said that President Obama was for gay marriages and she didn't like him for that. She also said this was not her opinion, but that of her school that is 90% white and mostly Republican. So I really had to talk to her about her own beliefs. She believes in the bible and she feels that gay marriage is against the bible.

I had to talk to her about racial injustice against our people and since she's never experienced it enough to know what it is, I decided to take her on a journey that I experienced when I was her age. Because she is the darker granddaughter and her sister is the brighter almost w h i t e g r a n d d a u g h t e r, I c r e a t e d an atmosphere of racism right in the house. I made her clean up after her sister, do all the house work and she was denied all her rights in the house. Well she didn't like it but it did give her a taste of what slavery and racism was like. I said all that to say this: no matter w h a t r e l i g i o n , p o l i t i c a l p a r t y, sexual orientation, gender or education, we all black and that is what we need to identify with. Black is not only what we are, it's who we are and we should never forget it, or let anyone else forget it. Ken “Peterson Prosper TX

CURRY: Obama’s Mixed Record on Appointing Judges Many speakers at the Republican convention in Tampa have focused on the economy and unemployment as they sought to contrast the Mitt RomneyPaul Ryan GOP ticket with the record of President Barack Obama. But there George E. Curry is another battle underway that is receiving less attention but is at least equally import – the fight to appoint federal judges. For several decades, Republicans have made judicial appointments a top priority. It is still a priority for the GOP and should be one for Democrats, especially because the 5-4 Supreme Court conservative majority could be widened or shifted in the other direction with the possible appointment of two justices over the next four years. Both President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney have made it clear they would appoint a different kind of judge to the federal bench. So far, the Obama record on appointing judges is like his race – mixed. Obama has appointed two Supreme Court justices – the same number as Bill Clinton and George W. Bush appointed over eight years. He appointed 30 appeals court judges, roughly the same number that Clinton and Bush averaged over a term. The real difference was at the district court level, where most cases are decided. Obama has appointed only 125 district judges,

compared to 170 for Clinton and 162 for Bush at this point of their presidency. Part of the problem was that Obama made judicial appointments a low priority as he tried to push his health reform initiative through Congress. Although he fell far behind Bush’s pace in his first year, he later accelerated the process but not fast enough to equal Bush. A second problem was GOP opposition to Obama’s nominees. Even so, Obama did make significant changes. The number of appeals court judges appointed by Democrats is now 49 percent, a 10 percent increase over when Bush left office. When Obama took office, judges appointed by Democrats dominated only one federal appeals circuit. Now, six of the 13 circuits are dominated by judges appointed by Democrats. An Aug. 17 New York Times article on Obama’s judicial record observed: “…Mr. Obama has also largely shied away from nominating assertive liberals who might stand as ideological counterpoints to some of the assertive conservatives Mr. Bush named. Instead of prominent liberal academics whose scholarly writings and videotaped panel discussions would provide ammunition to conservatives, Mr. Obama gravitated toward litigators, prosecutors and sitting district judges and state judges, especially those who would diversify the bench.” Many of those were met with Republican obstruction.

“The Republicans’ goal has been clear from the start – to keep as many seats as possible vacant for a future Republican president to fill with ultraconservative judges,” noted the Alliance for Justice, an association of more than 100 progressive President Barack Obama organizations. Obama’s goal of diversifying the federal bench has been complicated by the American Bar Association, a group of judicial professionals that vets candidates for federal judgeships. The New York Times article stated, “Awkwardly, the American Bar Association’s judicial vetting committee later scuttled at least 14 finalists for nominations – nearly all women and minorities –by declaring them ‘not qualified.’” In 2001, the George W. Bush administration announced that it would cease cooperating with the ABA in advance of judicial nominations, preferring to go with judges favored by the conservative Federalist Society. However, Obama has been unwilling to appoint judges not approved by the ABA. There is a down side to making safe judicial appointments, especially when conservatives are unabashed in their quest to remake the courts.

SMITH: Good people should not remain silent U.S. Rep Eddie Bernice Johnson was outraged and concerned when she heard that a serial rapist was terrorizing members of Delta Sigma Theta Cheryl Smith Sorority, Inc. Although she is not a member of the organization, the congresswo-man said she immediately reached out to the public service sorority’s national president, Cynthia Butler McIntyre and expressed her concerns and offered support. In June of 2011, CW33’s Giselle Phelps broke the story about a rapist north of Dallas, where there appeared to be a pattern in the assaults. The four reported attacks were in Plano, Corinth and Coppell. Ms. Phelps joined me on KKDA last October to talk about the story since it was revealed that the man was targeting Delta members, aged mid 50s to mid 60s. Covering the story was a priority for her station, she said. Other media outlets also have been trying to keep the story alive

and I applaud their efforts, but I agree with Rep. Johnson, that the media could have done a better job, with editorials and alerts. “There has been very little editorializing and that is unfortunate,” she said. “If this had been Delta Delta Delta (a predominantly white sorority) at Southern Methodist University, it would be a different story. “It’s Delta Sigma Theta so it is left to us to make sure we lift our voices.” Since the story broke, I have talked to many people who have expressed concern over “Pookie” the serial rapist. Across the country men and women have asked me about the attacks and said they hope that Pookie is caught soon. Pookie has been described as “a heavy set black man in his late 30s to mid 40s, between 5 feet 7 inches and 6 feet tall, 275 to 300 pounds and he has a trimmed beard, a short haircut and possibly a receding hairline.” “Pookie” is not his real name (at least to my knowledge). I took the liberty of naming him “Pookie.” Several local journalists, including NBC5’s Randy Mcilwain and Julie Ta m ; W FA A - T V ’s D e b b i e Denmon; and Ms. Phelps were

vigilant in their efforts to keep the story alive. I receive calls on a regular basis and I hear the aggravation CW 33’s Giselle Phelps from people Broke story of serial across the rapist. country as they continue to present details of the story. This is an emotional issue. Rep. Johnson expressed the same sentiment. “This situation is very frustrating,” she said. “Anywhere there‘s violence against women, more awareness is needed. I have been introducing legislation and will continue to address the issue.” As long as headlines continue to scream about the violent acts perpetrated against women and children, someone has to speak out and give voice to these voiceless victims and we have to support legislation related to such assaults. This story has been on local stations, in local publications and it has also made national news. There were quite a few tips after a segment of America’s Most Wanted featured the story.

Unfortunately the Black Press has not been as vigilant in efforts to keep the story on the forefront of folks minds. Sure there have been a few stories but come on people, we can’t get mad at the mainstream for not keeping attacks against black women on the front pages, if we d o n ’t d o i t w i t h o u r o w n publications and media outlets. One publisher told me that it was hard to get someone to talk, to give voice to the story. I told the publisher that I thank God for Ida B. Wells Barnett, who wrote about lynchings, even though she couldn’t talk to the victims! Thanks to Rep. Johnson for pulling folks together to discuss this topic. She said we all have a responsibility when people are assaulted, regardless of their color. Too bad so many of us are shirking our responsibility. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people.” This is Just One African American Woman’s Opinion. In a report on the last term of the Supreme Court titled, “The One-Percent Court,” the Alliance for Justice observed that in the landmark decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, Justices Elena Kagan, appointed by President Obama and Stephen Breyer, appointed by Bill Clinton, joined the five staunch conservatives on the court in holding that limits can be placed on Congress’ ability to address some national issues, including civil rights, under the commerce clause of the U.S. constitution. Obama’s only bold move in this area was the nomination of Goodwin Liu, a liberal University of California-Berkeley law professor, to the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco. Senate Republicans blocked his appointment with a filibuster. He briefly considered nominating another liberal, Pamela Karlan of Stanford University, but stayed with candidates that he believed would be more acceptable to Republicans. The Times article stated, “While she said she was not disappointed, Ms. Karlan expressed worries that if Republicans nominated outspoken conservatives but Democrats did not nominate equally liberal ones, the center of mainstream legal debate would shift to the right.” And that’s exactly what has happened. himself? Where did the Cobra .380 handgun come from? Why wasn’t Mr. Carter tested for gunshot residue even after police department asked for the test? Did Mr. Carter tell his girlfriend that he had a gun “with” or “on” him? Why does police footage appear to stop and start? Why did Mr. Carter call his girlfriend and tell her he was scared? Did the arresting officers know that Mr. Carter was left-handed, but his right hand was used to pull the trigger? There are so many more questions and while Officers Keith Baggett and Ron Marsh remain on administrative leave, more and more questions are surfacing. Along with those questions are reports about Mr. Carter. Sadly there are some very disturbing videos and reports, including one of him smoking marijuana with clearly underaged youth. There are also very unflattering photos on Facebook. Still, whatever information is being revealed now, was not known to the arresting officers and has no bearing on whether he was murdered or decided to take his own life. The Rev. Jesse Jackson and others have asked for further investigation and they are right in doing so. There’s so much more information than what has been revealed here. We don’t want a rush to judgment or any character assassinations. Justice is the ultimate goal!

6 Rep. Johnson on Rejection of Texas’s Voter ID Law Washington, DC- – The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia rejected Texas’s Voter ID law, Senate Bill 14 (SB 14), which

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

would have required voters to present a government-issued photo ID. In its decision, the Court noted that the law would have imposed “strict, unforgiving burdens on the poor,” and that minority voters are more likely to live in poverty. “This ruling is another solid victory for the state of Texas. The Texas Voter ID law would have disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of seniors, students, lowincome individuals, minorities, and people with disabilities,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Overturning this law will preserve the integrity of our elections, and ensure that every American has equal access to the polls. I applaud the Court’s decision to reject this discriminatory law, and I look forward to fair and open elections in November.” Under the Voting Rights Act, Texas and several other states with a history of discriminatory practices, must obtain “preclearance” from the Department of Justice or a declaratory judgment from the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia in order to implement any changes to election laws.

“Our home is the place where we spend the most time and is often our most toxic environment. Understanding the dangers and being educated is the first step to living an empowered lifestyle. We must limit carcinogens to reduce cancer rates and work with policy makers to establish regulations that help create new sustainable p r o d u c t s , ” s a i d D r e s c h e r. “Together, we can achieve a healthy future for all of humanity.” ASBC is working to pass the Safe Chemicals Act in Congress, which will address this issue by regulating over 82,000 toxic chemicals that now pose public health risks. Passage of this Act will also foster new greener chemicals, encourage R&D, and lead to more domestic and small business manufacturing.

Toddlers Take the Runway at World Breastfeeding Month Event at Methodist Charlton Expert panel weighs in on Breastfeeding Benefits, Best Practices

Modeling seems to come naturally to these participants in the children’s fashion show. Many of the models were breastfed babies.

Children of all ages modeled the latest youth fashions and a panel of experts brought information to a recent health education event at Methodist Charlton Medical Center. The event,“Breast Milk: Nature’s Perfect Nutrition” — took place in celebration of World Breastfeeding Month. The expert panel discussed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and encouraged women to take advantage of support efforts at Methodist Charlton. It also discussed a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program that helps ensure proper nutrition for low-income women and children up to age 5. The panel included Methodist Charlton physician Jeremy

September 1, 2012 Vaughan, MD; Methodist Charlton nurse-midwife Arnette Kelley; WIC peer counselor Catreana Cox; and Methodist Charlton lactation consultant Reba Godfrey. Lisa King-Hatley, MD, independently practicing physician on the Methodist Charlton medical staff, spoke to moms in a session called “Mom Talk.” Vendors were on hand to share information on services and products, and several of the attendees won door prizes. For the fourth year in a row, Methodist Charlton has been designated a Texas Ten Step facility by the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association. To receive the designation, hospitals must implement 10 goals, or “steps,” to support mothers who intend to breastfeed their infants after delivery. The staff also provides new mothers with resources for continued care after hospital discharge.

months, Parkland will also provide DSHS with information about its Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Program and progress. And Parkland will inform DSHS of reportable adverse events within the health care system within two business days of becoming aware of the event. The health system will then have 45 days in order to deliver a root cause analysis of the event and an action plan with strategies to reduce the risk of similar events occurring in the future. “We appreciate the DSHS’s willingness to work with Parkland on a settlement that allows us to focus on fixing the compliance issues that have troubled our health care system,” Branson said. “We will cooperate fully with this agreement as we continue to work toward completion of our corrective action plan.”

Parkland reaches settlement with Department of State Health Services

New Physician-led Healthcare System maintains vital doctorpatient relationship

DALLAS — Parkland Health & Hospital System has announced that it has reached a settlement agreement with the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) that r e s o l v e s a n d d i s c h a rg e s a l l potential litigation and enforcement actions for compliance issues prior to May 31, 2012. “Parkland has taken responsibility for its compliance issues and is several months into a Systems Improvement Agreement with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that will improve safety and quality of care,” said Debbie Branson, Chair, Parkland Board of Managers. “This agreement with the state allows us to settle any issues that occurred prior to May 31st and to focus on completing the changes necessary to secure Parkland’s future as one of the most important health care assets in North Texas.” Under the agreement with DSHS, Parkland will be assessed $1 million for violations that occurred prior to June 1, 2012. $750,000 will be payable within 30 days of the execution of the agreement. $250,000 will be held in abeyance subject to Parkland’s compliance with the terms of the agreement. IRVING, Texas – USMD Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq Capital Market: USMD) has announced that it has completed its previously announced business combination with USMD Inc. (“USMD”), Urology Associates of North Texas, L.L.P. (“UANT”), Medical Clinic of North Texas, P.A. (“MCNT”), and IMPEL Management Services, L.L.C. The new organization, USMD Holdings, creates an innovative integrated health system, led by physicians rather than third-party entities, committed to maintaining the vital doctorpatient relationship, ensuring better quality and more affordable care to patients. In connection with the business combination, USMD Holdings has issued 10 million shares of its common stock to the former owners of USMD, UANT and MCNT. USMD develops, operates, and manages entities that deliver diagnostic, therapeutic, and hospital-based healthcare services to patients. UANT is a physician group practice that provides professional medical services in the medical specialty of urology. MCNT is a multi-specialty physician practice group that provides professional medical services to patients throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area. IMPEL provides management and consulting services to physician practices nationally.

“This is a critical step in achieving our strategy to more efficiently deliver healthcare services to the public and to create an accountable care organization that is wellpositioned to provide comprehensive patient care,” said John House, M.D., chairman and chief executive officer of USMD Holdings. “We believe the patient’s needs should always come first, and we want to provide the proactive care patients deserve. In today’s healthcare climate, too often the focus has been on reactive care and patient volume rather than quality. Our model brings primary care and specialist physicians together and places them in their proper role as leaders of healthcare delivery. This important shift brings quality and patient satisfaction back to the forefront where it belongs by making our providers responsible for patient outcomes and overall clinical experience.” Although UANT, MCNT and USMD will continue to operate under their current names, their merger means patients now have access to more than 240 physicians and associate practitioners in 18 different specialties operating in 64 facilities across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In addition to operating two local hospitals with more than 400 physicians, USMD Holdings manages cancer treatment centers and kidney stone treatment facilities in 10 other states. “After three years of careful planning, we are pleased to be able to empower our physicians and employees with the leadership, state-of-the-art technology and clinical tools they need to serve our patients in the best possible way,” s a i d K a r e n K e n n e d y, c h i e f o p e r a t i n g o ff i c e r o f U S M D Holdings.

Volunteers needed for Large Free Medical Clinic DALLAS – The National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) is calling on physicians and other health care professionals, as well as nonmedical volunteers, to participate in the upcoming large free clinic for uninsured persons at the Dallas Convention Center, Hall A, 650 South Griffin St., on Sept. 29. The NAFC will hold its latest C.A.R.E. (Communities Are Responding Everyday) Clinic in conjunction with the Lone Star Association of Charitable Clinics (LSACC) and the North Texas Association of Charitable Clinics (NTACC). “We are hopeful that many individuals in the community will volunteer at this one-day, lifealtering event,” NAFC Executive Director Nicole Lamoureux said. “This C.A.R.E. Clinic is funded and made possible through the generosity of private citizens and sponsors, not one tax payer dollar is being utilized to pay for this clinic. In order for us to provide much needed free health care for as many uninsured patients as possible, we will need 100 doctors, 300-400 nurses and 500 or more non-medical volunteers.” Texas has the highest rate of uninsured people in the country with about 26 percent of residents in general and 22 percent of children lacking health insurance. The overall uninsured rate is about the same in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but the situation for children is even worse with 26.4 percent lacking health insurance.

COVER STORY By Cheryl Smith

Taste of Paul Quinn A healthy experience thanks to visionary leadership If you think that some folks weren’t incensed to hear that pork would not be served in the cafeteria at Paul Quinn College, you’ve got another “think” coming. The president of the oldest HBCU west of the Mississippi River has had his share of issues since arriving on the campus during what is clearly the most trying time in the school’s rich history. But that didn’t stop Atty. Michael J. Sorrell from tackling another issue -- obesity. Sure, the students could be prepared in the classrooms and leave the small campus to take on big challenges in the workforce, but what good was that degree really, if health issues deprived the students of a decent quality of life? While critics say that the focus should be elsewhere, that there’s a laundry list of issues that are deserving of his time, Mr. Sorrell tackled an issue that is prevalent, not only on college campuses but even as recently reported, in daycares and preschools. It’s amazing that President Sorrell has had to deal with naysayers when anyone can clearly see that America is an unhealthy nation and even the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has addressed the importance of regular physical activity and healthy eating. You can’t dispute the studies that show the negative impact that some foods have on study habits. Some foods make learning easier, while others have a negative effect. Yes, America is not only the most powerful, it is the largest, in more ways than one and the issue of obesity is one that others had spoken out about while still others turn a blind eye to the ever-expanding waistlines of our youth. Facing a national epidemic, critics have to realize that “baby fat” has turned in to fullblown blubber, and there’s nothing remotely cute about that. Parents send their children to college to get an education so that they can have careers. Part of that education process will not take place in the classroom and educators, some say, educators should also be as concerned with their students’ mental and physical wellbeing. President Sorrell has always expressed concern about the health of his students and it wasn’t just because he had a health scare exactly four years ago when he had to be revived after going into cardiac arrest. A college athlete, President Sorrell maintained an active lifestyle and exercise was a ritual for him, so encouraging exercise and healthier eating wasn’t a publicity stunt for him. He actually wanted to see his students healthy. President Sorrell wasn’t concerned about whether students could get into their Apple Bottom jeans or spandex skirts. Instead, he was focusing on the heavy breathing that occurred when a student walked up one flight

of stairs or was in and out of the hospital because of health issues exacerbated by excess weight. According to President Sorrell, “We actually didn’t ban pork. We simply decided not to serve it in the cafeteria any longer. It was the food service providers way of supporting our healthy eating focus and we are in support of the decision.” There’s an equally important issue that is directly related to obesity and that is food disparity. “This was one of the ways in which we are bringing attention to the food disparity issue in this country,” explained President Sorrell. “If you are from a majority community, you will have plenty of great pork options- pork loin and the best quality pork chops. However, if you reside in an under-resourced community you will be offered fatty bacon, ham and the worst of the pork chops. We have been consistent in our call for better access to healthy and affordable food for everyone.” Then too, it’s not just the pork in their diets

With acres of land being unused, a decision was made to turn the football field into a farm. So pretty much like farming at the White House under the leadership of First Lady Michelle Obama, the “We over Me Farm at Paul Quinn College" became a reality. In that historic partnership with Pepsico, the farm addresses the “lack of affordable, healthy food options available to economically depressed areas in the City of Dallas; creates a replicable model for achieving sustainable urban re-development built around providing safe food options to economically depressed communities; and creates a facility that will deliver preventative health care (that focuses on nutrition and exercise) to the underserved community surrounding the College.” Again it seemed like another shot in the dark, but then the fruits of the labor of students and community folk has evolved into a major source of nutrition in Southern Dallas County.

J. Anthony Brown, Sybil Wilkes and Tom Joyner will be on Paul Quinn’s Campus on September 13, 2012 for the Taste of Paul Quinn.

having an adverse effect on students. They really needed to lay off the ranch dressing, multiple carbs and sweets, among other items. Everyone needed to eat more vegetables. Where were students going to get those vegetables when the cafeteria is closed? Good question since the lack of a decent grocery store in the vicinity has been an issue even before Paul Quinn moved from Waco to Dallas in 1990. Bishop College students had the same issue.

The field that once stood for touchdowns and homecoming games is now known for fresh tomatoes and healthy living. More and more folks are taking notice. The Tom Joyner Foundation will be raising funds for Paul Quinn College’s “We Over Me” Community Garden as part of the Communities Foundation of Texas’ “North Texas Giving Day” online fundraising drive. A huge proponent of HBCUs, Tom Joyner, who is the host of the nationally- syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and founder/

President Michael J. Sorrell

chairman of the Foundation, will be joined by J. Anthony Brown and Sybil Wilkes of the Tom Joyner Morning Show; Tiffany Derry, celebrity chef/Top Chef alumna and executive chef of Private/Social Restaurant in Dallas; President Sorrell; Brent Christopher, president of Communities Foundation of Texas; State Rep. Eric Johnson (District 100); State Sen. Royce West (District 23); Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings; students and other local VIPs at the “Taste of Paul Quinn” where Old School 94.5 FM will be broadcasting live. The “Taste of Paul Quinn” will feature produce from the school’s community garden and recipes using the herbs and vegetables. The “Taste of Paul Quinn” will take place in the Paul Quinn College Grand Lounge, 3837 Simpson Stuart Road, Dallas, Texas, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13. Donations for the 2012 North Texas Giving Day will take place from 7 a.m. to Midnight. T h e To m J o y n e r F o u n d a t i o n ’s (www.tomjoynerfoundation.org) mission since 1998 has been to assist HBCUs. The partnership with Paul Quinn is part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to ensure the future of HBCUs. The “We Over Me” Community Garden is setting out to provide affordable and healthy food options in Southern Dallas, serve as a model for urban redevelopment and promote healthy eating and living in an area known as a food desert. In a memorable line from the classic 70s movie, Mahogany, Brian (Billy Dee Williams) told Tracy (Diana Ross) that “success is nothing without someone you love to share it with.” President Sorrell realizes that when his students leave Paul Quinn with their degrees in hand, having their health has to be included in that equation.

An African experience It was an opportunity to hear about how one woman has had a successful career while also reaching back to help others. Lorato, who is the Chief Executive of Nozala Investments, was visiting Dallas while on her way to enroll her son into college in Wichita Falls, TX. A huge proponent of education, she shared how education was an important part of her life.

significance of Black women helping one another once they achieve success in an area. “One of the biggest challenges is when we as Black women make it, we really battle to help other Black women get in,” she said. “We actually keep them (Black women) out.” Fortunately when she was entering the business world, there were people who reached out to help her, she acknowledged. She also shared information about a program she is involved with that helps women in rural areas of South Africa.

Vanessa Bell Calloway hosts dinner party for TV One’s Roland Martin

Roland drops it low with beauties Elise Neal, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Robinne Lee, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Salli Richardson.

I give my son money in exchange for good grades. Boyfriend disagrees! Dear Gwendolyn: My 14 year old son, like a lot of children, find school boring, which caused his grades to drop. A month ago, I made a promise to my son that every good grade he brings home, I will give him five dollars. Within one month’s time, he has already collected $25 from me. I’m proud of his accomplishments and I see the pride that has built up in him. However, my boyfriend is upset with me because of the way I am going about getting him to improve. Although, I believe in my heart there is nothing wrong with awarding a child. Gwendolyn, please let me know your thoughts. A Confused Mother

LOS ANGELES - It only made sense that Roland Martin, host of Washington Watch and a social media aficionado, would use only technology to invite friends to a private dinner party at the Los Angeles home of actress Vanessa Bell Calloway. The "digital list" of attendees - culled from Martin's cell phone - included Elise Neal, Jesse Williams, Tracey Edmonds, Salli Richardson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tatyana Ali, Judge Greg Mathis, Robinne Lee, Dondre Whitfield, Tanika Ray, Chris Spencer, Jackee Harry, Bill Duke, Sonja Norwood, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary,

Judge Kevin Ross and a host of entertainment and media executives. "I grew up in Houston where my family would throw get-togethers just for the fun of it, so this party is what I like to do when I come out to the west coast; I simply do not have enough time to do lunch with everybody," said Martin. "There's no rhyme or reason to it. I simply sent out a text message on Thursday and here we are!" Guests dined on a gourmet meal prepared completely by Calloway. The menu featured slow roasted chicken, "Killer Shrimp" in spicy champagne and garlic

It Has Begun! sauce, Korean BBQ, fried catfish, coconut rice, potato salad, grilled mixed veggies, and a mixed greens salad with candied pecans and goat cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Martin thanked Calloway who was gracious enough to open her home and host the party. "I enjoy hosting people and cooking for family and friends," said Calloway. "I'm getting a chance to meet some new people tonight. It has been my pleasure to help Roland celebrate community and fellowship."

What makes this so great is that Team Imaj has begun to expand her mission to not only spread world peace but to spread the awareness of Imaj and make the world a better place. Dear Confused Mother: First of all, let me say, “You’re not confused. You are only a concerned mother, and I truly congratulate you for taking an interest in your child.” Because your son is 14 and not 4, I believe you are on the right track. When children are very young, they can easily think that being awarded for something will forever be a way of their life - to later discover that theory to be untrue. Your boyfriend may not understand, so don’t upset yourself with his thoughts. There is something I want you to do: Take your son to dinner at an upscale restaurant. Since the beginning of daycare centers, allowing both parents to work, children have gotten the short end of the stick. I mean – not enough quality time with mom and dad. While you are dining with your son, let him know the money you are giving could become depleted. Too many knowledgeable boys and girls stop their education and are forced to work at pennies on the dollar for life. While dining show him a copy of job salaries. After he views pay differentials for school dropouts compared to careers of higher learning, he will know that his “greatest” award will be to achieve an education. Think about it. That award can only be given to him ---from him. Impact of hazing felt on so many levels

Death of drum major leads to arrests, investigations, firings, suspensions and more

Robert Champion loved being a member of the Marching 100!

For months the fate of Florida A&M University has been a topic of discussion since the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion, following the Florida Classic between the Rattlers and long-time rival, the Bethune Cookman University Wildcats. As a proud graduate and long-time, life member of the national alumni association, I was disappointed and saddened to hear of the death, especially when sources reported that hazing was involved. As I traveled the country, and even in Africa, the discussion about FAMU’s future arose. Then President James Ammons responded quickly by immediately suspending not only the band, but any type of initiation processes on campus. He later suspended the Band for the 2012-2013 school year. Investigations led to charges filed against 13 band members and there were also some firings. Fingers were also pointed at others. Some alumni were adamant about their support of band director Dr. Julian White, who found his job in jeopardy after over 40 years at the University. More recently, FAMU continued to dominate the headlines as Dr. Ammons

tendered his resignation, effective in October. Then, according to reports, Dr. Ammons “will go on sabbatical and then return to the university as a tenured professor.” Lack of oversight of the band and the school accounting irregularities, graduation, retention and enrollment rates, and allegations of sexual assault are some of the issues that have been discussed along with FAMU’s future. It is important to note that according to reports, based on an outside evaluation Dr. Ammons will receive a 25 percent bonus for his performance during the 2010/11 school year and a 5 percent bonus for meeting mutually agreed upon goals for the 2011/12 academic year. This means that something good was happening at FAMU under his leadership. The issues facing Dr. Ammons did not pop up overnight and they couldn’t all be rectified or eradicated as quickly. Many have said that he inherited many of the issues and he deserved an opportunity to handle them. I know Dr. Ammons made a lot of folks angry when he suspended the band, but as one alum pointed out to me, you shouldn’t want your child to join a band where there were so

many flagrant violations. I also know that Dr. Ammons loves FAMU and would never do anything to hurt the University or its students. He is a man of integrity and sincerity who d o e s n o t t a k e Dr. James Ammons lightly the passing of Mr. Champion or the illegal activities on campus. Unfortunately students, and the non students who were involved in activities that culminated with Mr. Champion’s death, paid no attention to the Florida hazing laws. They didn’t think that they would end up in jail, as is the case in more and more states. And while FAMU is dominating the headlines, this culture of hazing is not unique to the Tallahassee, Fla school or HBCUs. There have been incidents of hazing reported even at high school and middle schools and while you hear primarily about sororities and fraternities; some who I have talked to say the culture of hazing is so wide-spread that even modeling troupes or dance teams are hazing. Someone jokingly told me that Chess Clubs and bowling teams haze their members. Now, I understand the need to encourage excellence and that is exactly what was expected from FAMU’s Marching 100; however it is imperative that the system have penalties in place so that “creative” minds won’t come up with their own forms, which are most likely illegal. If he dropped the baton, I think there should be a punishment, like let him sit out a performance or two or

Bayou Classic team introduces new fan-focused NEW ORLEANS – The Bayou Classic team has unveiled a new website in anticipation of this year’s series of events starting Thursday, November 22, 2012. In addition to the full listing of events for this year’s Bayou Classic, the new website provides fans the ability to connect with their favorite team on personalized pages that put the school’s brands front and center. The new website, accessed at www.mybayouclassic.com, was created to provide an interactive experience for fans of Grambling State University and Southern University. The website introduces new sections that provide fans with exclusive game information and an opportunity to participate in The Bayou Classic directly, including: “My Team”

The “My Team” link provides d i r e c t a c c e s s t o b o t h s c h o o l ’s information – including up-to-theminute stats and schedules. Fans are linked straight to their school of choice to interact directly with either the Tigers or Jaguars. Photos Fans of Grambling and Southern now have the opportunity to directly upload their personal photos from the game and other Bayou Classic events on the website. This new section provides fans the opportunity to share their Bayou Classic moments with everyone on the website. Alumni This new special section is the single place for all information regarding the Bayou Classic for alumni of the two universities. Special announcements, events and promotions will be announced in this section for

alumni of the two schools to participate. The new website is another step by the Bayou Classic team and the two schools to make the event more fan and family friendly. The new website is in addition to the recent announcement that tickets for the Bayou Classic were reduced this year to make the game more affordable for those with families. “Fan and family friendly – that is the goal in everything we have done and continue to do for the Bayou Classic,” said Dottie Belletto, President of New Orleans Convention Company, Inc., the management firm of The 39th Annual Bayou Classic.

make him clean instruments. Whatever you do, don’t resort to physical violence. My heart goes out to Robert Champion’s parents. They have filed a few lawsuits but I know they would much rather be able to hear their son’s voice and to see him do what he loved to do so much--perform in the band. There are so many casualties when hazing occurs. When parents send their children to school, they aren’t sending them with the thought that they are going to war and may not come home, but that is exactly what is happening. In addition to the Champion family, the former band members who could be imprisoned, Dr. Ammons, Dr. White, staffers who lost their jobs, hundreds of students who were looking forward to attending FAMU to become a member of the incomparable Marching 100 and others, there are so many who will suffer because of a few. What many critics have called attention to is the abuse of females. There are so many lessons to be learned from the tragic incidents that have been reported to have led to Mr. Champion’s death. Any parent sending their children to college should have take time to discuss the issue and other situations that could arise on a college campus and how they should use common sense and not fall prey to peer pressure. Sadly it appears there are students who have not learned from FAMU’s situation and this is unfortunate. While the FAMU nation deals with challenges today, it is imperative that we not give up on our schools. No one should be celebrating right now and no one should be hazing!
