Sen. Harris expected to announce intentions By Stacy M. Brown NNPA Newswire Correspondent
So you say you can cook
In class one day there was a conversation about sweet potato pies. Now I have my opinion about pies because many who talk about how good they can bake a pie are just doing like the Godfather of Soul James Brown sang about, “talking loud and saying nothing.” Even one of the male students talked about how good he was at baking, as I gave him the side eye. I learned at a young age how to make a good sweet potato pie. I used to take them to school when I was in elementary, I think they call it junior high now, seventh and eighth grade. By the time I got to East Orange High School (NJ) my way around the kitchen was well known. There were friends who brought their special dishes to school for lunch. One liked bringing those Rice Krispy Treats, another would bring potato salad, loaded with black pepper. Some were relegated to bringing drinks, because everyone can’t cook. Which brings me to my truth.

MURDER!
From Staff Reports
A Dallas grand jury returned a murder indictment against former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, 30, for the murder of businessman Botham Jean, 26. Ms. Guyger entered Mr. Jean’s apartment on September 6, 2018 and he was killed. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said that over 300 people were interviewed and after months of investigations and pouring over information, her office was ready to present the case to the
Amber Guyger grand jury. Adding that she had confidence
that incoming district attorney and former judge John Creuzot would continue the work that her administration had begun, DA Johnson said that critics who thought the case should have been presented earlier did not alter her office's course because her team was working for justice and not for expediency or for political reasons. Mr. Jean’s relatives, including his mother, returned to Dallas from their home in Saint Lucia, for the proceedings. Speaking for her family about See Guyger, page 2
California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris has never been known to pull-punches. Harris is viewed by those who know her as someone who’s “as tough as they come.” And, she knows that any bid for president in 2020 against the bombastic Donald Trump will take a bit of rhinoceros skin to deal with. “It’s a very serious decision,” Harris told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski during an onstage conversation at the Know Your Value conference in San Francisco. “Over the holiday, I will make that decision with my family.” As she told NNPA Newswire in September during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, she’s keenly aware of the challenges a barrier-breaking campaign will entail. “Let’s be honest. It’s going to be ugly,” Harris said. “When See HARRIS, page 6

the case, Mr. Jean’s mother, Allison, said that justice is what they are seeking. "Give me justice for my son because he does not deserve what he got," Allison Jean said, flanked by her attorneys and Dallas activists in the lobby of a downtown Dallas office building. "I will not sit back and see that justice does not prevail." An analyst at PricewatershouseCoopers, Mr. Jean was at home at SouthSide Flats Apartments when he was killed by Ms. Guyger, who also lived in the same apartments but on a different floor. Ms. Guyger's defense is that she went to the wrong apartment and killed him because she thought he was a burglar. The Dallas NAACP President Aubrey C. Hooper, released the following statement on the murder indictment of Amber Guyger. "We are pleased with the decision of the grand jury to indict Amber Guyger for murder for the killing of Mr. Botham Shem Jean. "This is the next step in securing a verdict that will be favorable to the evidence that will be presented by the

We call on the community to remain calm and let the criminal proceedings take its due course. However, we ask that you join us in continued prayer and support for the family and friends of Mr. Botham
Shem Jean. "The Dallas NAACP will remain vigilant in monitoring the proceedings of this case and look forward to justice being rendered.” Texas District Judge Tammy Kemp, was assigned Friday to preside over the murder trial of Ms. Guyger. Prior to her election, she was a prosecutor for the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. A graduate of the
University of Oklahoma Law School, Judge Kemp is a Democrat. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Concord Baptist Church in Dallas, the judge was recently re-elected to a second term on the 204th Judicial District Court bench, where she began serving in 2015. Judge Kemp was a top prosecutor in the officer of Craig Watkins, who was
Texas’ first elected African-American District Attorney. After Ms. Guyger was booked into Jail Friday afternoon but released on a $200,000 bond, the judge ordered her to surrender her passport and not to travel outside Texas without court approval. Remembering President George H.W. Bush
From the Capitol By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson
At the funeral tribute for his late wife, Barbara, who died last April, former President George H.W. Bush sat pensively in his wheelchair near her casket, patiently greeting those who had come to mourn the woman whom he had married seventy-three years earlier. It seemed improbable that they

By Vincent L. Hall Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen are garnering rave reviews for the new movie; “Green Book. The film constructs the hazards and caveats that came with traveling in the segregated South during the 1950’s. What I do like about it, is that it does stay close to the historical truths. History never lies, but some of the people who write it do take license with the truth. A few years ago a Black mother by the name of Roni Dean-Burren, was on her game and peeped the game the State of Texas was playing. When Cody, her 15-year-old son and student at Houston’s Pearland High came home, he pointed out what he believed to be a wrong worded photo caption to his mother. This now infamous textbook, sanctioned by the Texas State Board of Ed-
resentation is tantamount to saying that Dr. Martin Luther King walked out onto the balcony of the Lorraine Motel for a cigarette and caught a whizzing bullet as it was passing by. Why even mention James Earl Ray? In other words, a truth perverted is just an outright lie! We should all thank mothers like Roni Dean-Burren for (1) being astute enough to catch this egregious attempt to “Whitewash’ history and (2) for modeling the proper use of social media; which is best used to create revolutionary communities through the conveyance of significant information. This is
the real power of Facebook. Now I know that you think Facebook is fantastic because you get 350 people who don’t really know or like you to send their “best on your birthday. But this example proves that the urgency of now dictates the need for a new paradigm in utilizing the advances of communicative technology. It’s not as if we have not had a workable form of Civil Rights activism through “social media before. The efforts just weren’t as technologically savvy, or as easily or widely disseminated. In 1936, Harlem mailman and union worker, Victor Hugo Green and his wife, developed a publication they saw a need for. “The Negro Motorist Green Book served as a travel guide and atlas to arm Black families with traveling information as they drove through “hotbeds where segregation was strictly enforced. Google “Sundown Towns, and read the history of those places where African-Americans were prohibited after dark. If you thought declaring martial law with nightly curfews like Ferguson
or Baltimore was something new for Black folks‌ think again. Green surveyed his network of fellow postal workers around the country to suggest and advertise towns where Coloreds could get hotels, dining, or night clubs; without being arrested or lynched. Green printed an average of 15,000 copies per year. It was an idea he borrowed from Jews in America who were also prominently featured in the all-too-familiar signs in the Deep South that read: No Jews, No Dogs, No Niggers! Eventually, The Green Book evolved to include essays and journalistic works. In 1948, Green wrote that the need for his book would surely diminish soon. He died in 1960 at the age of 68. The Civil Rights Bill was not passed until 1964 and the 30-year-old Green Book printed its last copy in 1966. Maybe someone needs to publish a Green Face Book. From the looks of it, we ain’t safe or significant in swanky Ivy League dormitories. Angry or suspicious white women call the cops on us for legally using a public park. We are not even safe in the sanctity of our own apartments. RIP Brother Botham. Go see the Green Book, but don’t make any sudden moves, before or after it gets dark. Ain’t much changed!

Barbara Williams Skinner, at 75, looks at least two decades younger than her birth certificate suggests. Much of her youthful energy is due to her discipline, which includes a mindful prayer practice, a vegetarian diet, and a focused mind. But as much of her youthfulness, I think, can be attributed to her engagement with emerging leaders, the younger people who are poised to lead and learn. On November 29, she celebrated the 25th

Barbara writes about her struggle to embrace God, her relationship and marriage to Tom Skinner, who had been a spiritual advisor to, among others, the Washington Redskins, and about ways to pray for political enemies. She spoke of these things, and many more, at the celebration of the Skinner Leadership Institute, an event that not only celebrated Skinner and her leadership, but also lifted up some of the women around her. The intergenerational group she lifted up included Melanie Campbell, of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation and Chanelle Hardy, who holds a leadership role at Google and is an alumna of the Skinner Leadership Master Series for Distinguished Leaders. Black Caucus needs to get to work on Western Sahara
By Bill Fletcher, Jr. NNPA Newswire Contributor The transition towards a new Congress is underway. Democrats are beginning to assume leadership positions as a result of their gaining a House majority. The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) should now have many issues to bring forward and one of them needs to be the Western Sahara. Once upon a time the CBC was one of the most significant so-called mainstream players in the realm of US foreign policy. In the 1970s – 1980s the CBC was central to work against white minority rule in Southern Africa.
Some of its members also pushed the envelope on the US blockade of Cuba. Yet, over the years the voice of the CBC on US foreign policy has become far more distant. Yes, they have paid attention to matters such as US trade policy with Africa, but they have shied away from addressing conflicts in Africa, let alone other major international issues. The question of the Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony illegally occupied by the Moroccan government, is one such conflict site that the CBC has spent precious little time addressing. It is not that they don’t care, at least from what I can tell. Former Congressman John Conyers, for instance, was the co-chair of a Congressional committee on the Western Sahara. Yet, what has been missing is the passion and engagement that should be associated with resolving Africa’s last remaining colonial question. The Western Sahara is not a matter on the tip of everyone’s tongue. In part
because there has been a long-term truce between the Moroccan occupation forces and the national liberation movement known as POLISARIO, Morocco’s litany of human rights abuses and its denial of national self-determination to the Sahrawi population rarely gets into the headlines.
of national self-determination. Quite obviously, the conflict in the Western Sahara is an inner-African struggle. This colonialism is carried out by one African country against another, rather than a struggle against European colonialism. Nevertheless, it represents a strug-

can truly emerge on a continent divided as it has been by boundaries originally established by European colonial powers. The CBC can take an active role. It needs to put the pressure on the USA to pull back from its nearly unqualified support for the Moroccan monarchy and its illegal occupation of the Western Sahara. This can begin by the CBC making the Western Sahara a very public issue and showing the world the manner in which the Moroccan government is permitting the people of the Western Sahara to be robbed by foreign corporations in search of cheap natural resources. The CBC truly needs its own foreign policy platform within which the Western Sahara should play a prominent role. Bill Fletcher, Jr. is the former president of TransAfrica Forum. Waters on World AIDS Day 2018
Congress Speaks By reP. Maxine WaterS
WASHINGTON – As a congressional leader in the fight against HIV/ AIDS, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued the following statement in recognition of World AIDS Day, which is celebrated every year on December 1: “On World AIDS Day, we unite in solidarity worldwide in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We show support for people living with the disease and commemorate those who have died. We stand together to raise awareness about the epidemic so we can prevent further
spread of the virus and give hope to the 1.1 million Americans[1] and the 36.9 million[2] women, men and children worldwide who are living with HIV/AIDS. Throughout my career, I have been a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention and treatment. I worked with local organizations and community leaders to raise funds for local minority HIV/AIDS initiatives in Los Angeles and introduced legislation to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic among African Americans in the California State Assembly. As a Member of the U.S. Congress, I spearheaded the establishment of the Minority AIDS Initiative, which has significantly expanded HIV/AIDS prevention, screening, and treatment efforts among racial and ethnic minorities and reduced the tragic AIDS disparities affecting minority communities in the United States. I am pleased to report that funding
for the Minority AIDS Initiative has increased from the initial appropriation of $156 million in fiscal year 1999 to more than $400 million per year today. However, we still face unprecedented challenges in our struggle against HIV/AIDS. For the past two years, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have debated proposals to slash funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts and take health insurance away from millions of Americans, including those who are living with HIV/AIDS and other pre-existing conditions. Furthermore, after implementing an unconscionable policy of family separation, which snatched more than 2,500 children from the arms of their parents, the Trump administration shifted millions of dollars in funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program in order to fund housing and
care for migrant children, many of whom they have failed to reunite with their parents. The administration also announced further cuts to programs that benefit people living with HIV/ AIDS, including: $3.8 million from HIV programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), $9.8 million from Medicare and Medicaid program operations, $2.2 million from maternal and child health programs, and $87.3 million overall from the National Institutes of Health. Americans living with HIV/AIDS deserve better.[3] On World AIDS Day 2018, we must confront the challenges we face, and we must resist all attempts to abandon the struggle against this terrible disease. We must fight to protect Obamacare, which ensures that people living with HIV/AIDS and other pre-existing conditions can obtain health coverage.
We must fight to stop budget cuts to all of the federal programs serving people affected by HIV/AIDS. We must expand research, prevention, screening and treatment efforts, and we must fight to make sure all Americans living with HIV/AIDS receive the care and treatment they need and deserve.” [1] https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/ overview/data-and-trends/statistics 2 https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/ overview/data-and-trends/global-statistics 3 https://www.cnn. com/2018/09/20/politics/hhs-shifti ng - m on e y - c an c e r- ai d s - i m m i grant-children/index.html Congresswoman Maxine Waters (DCA), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services

Cory Booker have long been seen as a possible Democratic ticket in 2020, though no one has speculated which might run as president. “This is a critical time,” Booker told NNPA Newswire in September at the conference. “The CBC is the conscience of Congress and we have not yet achieved the American Dream which is increasingly out of reach for many. The Dream is still deferred,” he said. Harris, who, like Booker, has gone from rising star to serious presidential contender, said there is plenty of work ahead. “It’s about where we came from and where we’ve got to go,” she told NNPA Newswire. “This is a pivotal moment. I think we all know when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the Dream, it wasn’t about being asleep,” Harris said. “It was about being awake.” In her interview with MSNBC, Harris expressed frustration over the slow progress of the Secure Elections Act, which she
Sen. Cory Booker introduced in March, along with co-sponsor Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma. The bipartisan legislation would give the Department of Homeland Security responsibility for ensuring secure elections and shoring up election infrastructure against cyber-attacks and would establish
an independent advisory panel of experts to develop guidelines on election cyber security. Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who currently serves as the leader of the Senate, has not yet brought the legislation to the floor for a vote. Harris said she has been told that is at the White House’s request. “First of all, let’s be clear about the fact Russia did interfere in the [2016] election of the president of the United States,” Harris told Brzezinski. “Flawed though it may be, we designed a beautiful system of democracy, and one symbol of that is that we have free and open elections. “When a foreign government chooses to manipulate our democracy knowing that would compromise our strength and our perception of our strength, you would think leaders would say ‘No, we are going to do everything we can to strengthen and to give ourselves the immunity we need to be free from that kind of manipulation.’ Yet, it’s not happening.”

Elf The Musical
If Elf The Musical doesn’t get you into the Christmas spirit you really are a Grinch! Elf, currently playing at The Music Hall at Fair Park, is an adaptation of the 2003 movie that starred Will Ferrell. The Elf in the musical stage play is played by Erick Williams, a 6ft tall wannabe elf who was raised by the tiny toymakers and who finally figures out that he is a human. After Santa tells him that his real mother died in childbirth he leaves the North Pole in search of his real dad in the bustling metropolis of Manhattan. To makes matters worse, Santa tells him that his real dad has been on the “naughty list.” The play follows the basic premise of the movie but,

with all of the musical numbers in the show, it barely resembles Jon Favreau’s original movie. However, the musical version is a lot of fun. Williams plays his character like an elf all hyped up on sugar (which he is) and the songs will have you singing along. (“The Story of Buddy the Elf” was my favorite. It had me singing it all the way home.) Elf is a great event for the whole family. It’s about family, falling in love and is a fun play with some really good music. Elf The Musical is for the whole family. It was part of the Dallas Summer Musical series.

That Celebrity Interview
My energy of greatness interview today comes as Ernie Hudson and Valerie Pettiford (profiled in a separate IMessenger article). I was enthralled by the deep tones of Ernie Hudson’s voice yet I was most impressed by his graciousness during the interview. These stars aka celebrities add joy to my job and my hopes they add joy to your perusal. Ernie Hudson has had a long and successful career on the big and small screen. He has appeared in dozens of film and television roles throughout his career. Now he stars in BET Networks Carl Weber’s The Family Business, he plays L.C. LEADERSHIP continued from page 4
like Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole (former president of both Bennett and Spellman Colleges), the Honorable Constance Berry Newman (perhaps the only Black woman to have served under 7 Presidents, with 5 Senate confirmations), the Honorable Alexis Herman, 23rd Secretary of Labor, and former Essence Editor in Chief and founder of National Cares Mentoring Inc. Susan Taylor. Former DC First Lady Cora Masters Barry was among the other elders lifted up. It was characteristic of Barbara to share her celebration with women who have made a difference in her life and in the lives of others. Barbara Skinner has always embraced emerging leadership and provided a bridge for younger leaders to connect with seasoned one. I’ve had the pleasure of mentoring young women through her Master Series for Distinguished Leadership for more than a decade, and have enjoyed the energy and ideas that these young sisters have brought into my life. But with Congresswoman Barbara Lee “in the house” after her stinging defeat to be Democratic Caucus Chair, there were angry whispers among some of us gathered about the meaning of intergenerational leadership. Was New York Congressman Hakeem Jefferies disrespectful and opportunistic (yes) in going after a position that Lee had been campaigning for more than eight months (full disclosure – I helped)? What does it mean that there is no Black woman in the formal leadership of the House of Representatives, even though Black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party? Does intergenerational leadership mean that seasoned leaders have to step aside, or does it suggest that emerging leaders need to pull a chair (not a treacherous knife) up to the table? Even as we enjoyed a loving tribute to someone who has been a bridge (a word used frequently, and a word that Skin-
ner’s pastor, Dr. David Anderson, used to describe her), there was appreciation of Congresswoman Barbara Lee and anger about Hakeem Jeffries. African American millennials may be justifiably impatient when Baby Boomers and those even older dominate African American leadership. With the top three Congressional Democrats, Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, and James Clyburn, and also Barbara Lee all over 70, there is a compelling case to be made for the younger Jefferies, under 50, to be included in Congressional leadership. At the same time, there is something to be said for seasoned leadership, and for the inclusion of the exceptional and courageous African American Barbara Lee, in leadership. There were undoubtedly other issues, including those geographic and philosophical (Jeffries is more moderate than Lee, and Lee’s chairmanship would have put two Californians in the top four leaders), but true intergenerational cooperation would require something more than the gangsta move Jefferies pulled to eke out his win (by 10 votes). After the midterm elections, the Congressional Black Caucus has emerged as a powerful bloc among Democrats, with a massive 53 members, nearly a quarter of the 235 Democrats who will be seated in Congress in January. The group’s power is weakened, however, when there are intergenerational conflicts and fissures among the membership. The Jeffries victory over Barbara Lee represents such a fissure. It will take the faith, fortitude and focus of prayer warrior Rev. Barbara Williams Skinner to help the Caucus embrace its highest and best purpose. If you don’t know Dr. Skinner, Google her! Congresswoman Johnson recognizes STEM Students at 2018 App Challenge Reception
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson thanking the student participants of the 2018 Congressional App Challenge and encouraging the students to continue pursuing their interest in STEM educations and professions.
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson on Monday recognized the participants of the 30th Congressional District of Texas’ 2018 Congressional App Challenge at a reception she hosted for the students and their families. More than 100 middle and high school students, who attend schools within District 30, participated in the competition that focuses on developing science and technological innovation in youth. More than 55 apps were built and submitted by participating students. The winning app, named “EZ Voter,” offers voters and constituents an easier method to communicate with their representatives on specific issues under consideration in Congress. Skyline High School student, Stephen “Dodge” Su-

prun, designed and submitted the app which won first-place. “This App Challenge is one of many efforts I put forward to engage our young people and encourage them to pursue their future dreams, but it is unique. This is the one program that serves as a platform for the youth to create practical solutions to challenges we face at this very moment,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “This is why I am delighted to recognize each one of you today, for your imagination and innovation. If you all continue to carry the same determination and passion for science, your horizons are limitless.” The apps were graded on several factors, including aesthetic appeal and ease of use, by five judges, who work in the

science, technology, engineering and mathematic fields in Dallas-Fort Worth. “Remember Me- Alzheimer’s Helper” and “ Sonia Learning Center (S.L.C.)” were awarded second and third place, respectively and were recognized at the reception hosted at Per Scholas, an information technology school that offers training and professional development courses. The Congressional App Challenge is a component of Congresswoman Johnson’s efforts to connect with the youth and expose them to better personal and professional opportunities. She also hosts the Youth Summit and Diversity Dialogue, the Math and Science Lecture Series and the Youth Crime Prevention Summit each year.

Dear Alma,
My co-worker gets on my last nerve! Ask Alma
I come to you as humbly as I know how, because I’m really at an interesting professional intersection. I currently work at a summer camp teaching kids how to cook and my co-teacher is tawdry. We will call this person “Calvin.” So, Calvin has been cooking for a while and has a lot of life experiences that add life and joy to our program. If something goes wrong, Calvin is normally the first to help find a solution to keep the integrity of the lesson going. My biggest issue with Calvin is that he is the “King of Change.” I feel like he’s changing things, just to be included. If we are doing an experiment and we hand the worksheets out first then go outside, Calvin will suggest we go outside first, then hand out the worksheets. It almost feels intentional. Just this week, we were making waffles and we had the students measuring the ingredients. After lunch Calvin starts pouring unmeasured ingredients in the bowl. I told him I wanted the kids to do that, so they get the chance to be included in the lesson. He said, “Oh, well we can have them do the cinnamon.” Then he asked me if he could lead the les-

Alma Gill’s newsroom experience spans more than 25 years. Email questions to: alwaysaskalma@gmail.com. Follow her on Facebook at “Ask Alma” and twitter @almaaskalma. son. Now, this wouldn’t normally be a problem, but he had already led the majority of lessons during this camp. He was already in my face and the students are in the classroom, so there wasn’t really a chance to resolve the issue without it turning into something else, so, I decided to take break and come back at the end of the group’s class period. With every person you meet, Calvin tries to figure out if they know someone there and it feels disingenuous. Sometimes, Calvin talks loud on his cell phone during class lessons, and comes to work with a bonnet on his head; sometimes he’ll leave a roller in his hair for part of the day. Calvin just turned 50. What can I do or say to Calvin? He is a great person, but I’m not sure, if he’s open to constructive
criticism. How do I go about telling him how I feel with love and tact? Sincerely, Can’t Wait ‘Til Friday Dear Friday, I was working this thing out in my brain and I thought I was on the right track, until I got to this sentence: Calvin just turned 50. Hit the brakes. Hol’ up, hol’ up, this changes everything. Your story about Calvin reminds of that overthe-top character from the “Martin” sitcom: “I said, Jerome’s in the house, watch yo’ mouth! Who you talking ‘bout, an old school playa from the Himalayas?” Calvin has been doing his thing for a long, long time. Take a seat young one, watch and unlearn. This is summer camp, so you’re only in it for a minute, on your way to bigger and
better things. You say Calvin is tawdry, I say Calvin’s non-swag is none of your business. Okay, he likes to wear a roller or an earring every now and again. What if Beyoncé did it, you’d call it a trend. LOL. I have a feeling you are always slammed, glammed and got it going on—on the regular. That’s a wonderful thing, this world requires all kinds, but that’s not Calvin. Does that mean he can’t do his job? No. Does that mean he won’t ever be the boss? Yes and that’s all right with him. Calvin sounds like he won’t be wearing any skinny jeans any time soon. I ain’t mad at him and you’ve got bigger fish to fry, you are clearly passing through. On those tough “I don’t think I can make it days,” those kids, potential foodies, chefs, restaurant entrepreneurs will remember your directions, professionalism and ability to make it look good while you’re doing it. I commend you for that. On those “this is too hard, I’m gonna quit days,” they’ll think about Calvin and say to themselves, if he can do it, I can do it too, face washed, teeth brushed, without a roller in their hair. Alma

My Truth, continued from front page I never told my mother that I wanted to cook. But that didn’t stop her from calling me into the kitchen when she was cooking. Those were the times that I wished I was a boy because my brother got to stay outside playing with his friends. I can hear her voice, “This is how you clean a chicken,” “let me show you what you need to do to keep the rice from sticking to the pan,” or “we’re going to make sure there is not one string in these pies!” And if I thought it couldn’t get any worse, well have you ever cleaned chitterlings or the inside of a whole chicken? “You have to dig your fingers in there and pull out all that stuff,” she would instruct. I used to tell my friends that you might not find my cooking seasoned to your taste, but you can bet one thing, it was clean. My mother taught me how to clean, not to eat off the utensils I am cooking with, and how to clean up any pots, pans or dishes that I messed up while cooking. “Clean as you go,” she said. Today, those memories keep a smile on my face whenever I have moments that continue to come even today, four and a half years since she transitioned. So when I was talking to Hardy Bouy’er recently and he was telling me about how he cooks the meats and other dishes while his wife, Joann, does the baking, it was a real treat. They own Hardy and Joann’s Delicious Delights. Of course our conversation drifted to sweet potato pies and what we each did to make ours special. It was a great conversation for me because I love hearing someone discussing their passion. And I learned something from him while I shared one of my mother’s secrets. He stumped me with one tidbit and when I told him that I make my own crusts, well, he had to stand down a minute! Now we’re going to put our knowledge and years of baking to the test. You see, on January 21, 2019, at the Realizing the Dream Healthy Living Expo, there will be a Sweet Potato Pie Contest. I know that Ms. Tina, at Yo Momma’s Kitchen on Corinth makes a mean sweet potato pie. It is absolutely fabulous. Then Co’ka, of Mo’ka n Co’ka fame, talks a good game about her pie but I haven’t tasted it yet. And, if you go into most Black-owned restaurants, like Sweet Georgia Brown, Two Podners, and South Dallas Cafe; you’re gonna see those pies, and they aren’t pumpkin.
So we’re calling all sweet potato pie aficionados for January 21, 2019 at the African American Museum. We’re looking for the best Sweet Potato Pie and we don’t care where it comes from, as long as it is not store bought. There are three categories: traditional (my fave), Specialty (you know some folks use pecans, marshmallows, etc) and then the Heart Healthy One (especially for diabetics/people with health issues). We’re going to have celebrity judges and then attendees at the Expo can purchase a slice. The winners will receive prizes, of course, and they will be featured in Messenger Media Publications. So much more is going on that day, in addition to the Sweet Potato Pie Competition. We want our community to get healthy: physically, spiritually, financially, mentally, socially and holistically. That’s right, we have to educate, enlighten, inform, inspire and also entertain, as we grow and build better, stronger families, communities and ultimately society. There will be seminars, health screenings, voter education, weight loss info, vegetarian/vegan info, financial literacy, and more. For more information, to enter or find out how you can be a vendor, call 214-941-0110.
Butterfly I emerge from this darkness changed. Leaving behind so much of what was me; whole but with missing parts. Pushing myself through a realization that does not include you, physically. Your transformation complete. Mine ... only beginning. La Juana and Patricia Barton
