Businesswoman introduces dotWed For Couples Adrienne McAdory is sure to make Internet history with the ownership rights to the new Top Level Domain, dotWED. Beginning December 30, 2013 through January 28, 2014, newly engaged couples will have the opportunity to claim their own dotWED domain name as part of a Landrush pre-launch period. The first dotWED websites from Landrush go-live February 1, 2014. General Availability begins for the world April 1, 2014. Imagine the uniqueness and excitement of MaryandJohn.wed or TishaandEdmond.wed.\ McAdory wound up with the ownership rights to dotWED almost by chance. A government IT consultant for more than a decade, she stumbled upon an article in the Washington Post announcing the sale of 1,000 new top level domains (TLDs). Seeing this a great business opportunity, McAdory cashed in a large portion of her savings, formed a company (Atgron Inc.) and purchased the rights to dotWED. Her timing is great. A third of proposals each year occur between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and another six million are predicted to occur on Valentine’s Day, reports Mashable. McAdory plans to take dotWED global. The Mississippi native who has lived in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Beijing, has an international outlook on the reach of dotWED and “refuses to settle for only domestic”, says McAdory. McAdory's mission is to provide couples around the globe with dotWED domain names. At a starting price of $50 per year for the first two years, couples can finally move away from the corporate dotCOM and celebrate marital bliss with dotWED.

Milken Institute names Texas Cities Best Performing in 2013 AUSTIN – The Milkin Institute has named Austin the best performing city in its annual ranking of metropolitan areas, and recognized Dallas and Houston in the top 10. Seven of the report’s top 25 bestperforming cities in 2013 are in Texas. “The Lone Star State continues to set a national example for job creation thanks to our model of low taxes, smart regulations and fair courts,” Gov. Perry said. “Combined with a highly skilled workforce prepared to take on new challenges in a diverse array of industries, these principles continue to make Texas the best state in the nation to live, work, raise a family and run a business.” The Milken Institute’s ranking evaluates job creation and retention, the quality of new jobs, and other criteria related to economic success in metropolitan areas across the country. The report noted several industries that contribute to Texas’ thriving economy, including technology, energy and financial services. “This year’s Best Performing City, Austin, is a case study in concocting the proper recipe for economic vitality,” the Milkin Institute said. “A rising technology center, it is creating high-quality jobs that improve the region’s overall wage structure.”

I strongly encourage interested students to apply and enhance their education outside of the classroom.” For more information about the program benefits and requirements, visit the CHCI website here: http://www.chci. org/internships/ Application Deadline: Summer 2014 Congressional Internship—January 31, 2014 Fall 2014 Congressional Internship— April 25, 2014

Huston-Tillotson University Students win Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition

Texas cities have recently received national recognition by Forbes and The Business Journals for their economic strength and job growth. In the Forbes study released in October, the top four U.S. metro areas for middle class job creation since 2007 are in Texas, with Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos ranking first. The Business Journals’ October 2013 rankings of cities’ economic strength also named three Texas cities in the top five, with Austin again topping the list.

Fayetteville State University, Howard University, Huston-Tillotson University and Tuskegee University descended on Ford World Headquarters last week to present their projects to a panel of judges, which included radio personality Tom Joyner, in the first Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition. After an intense afternoon of presentations, Huston-Tillotson University, located in Austin, Texas, was named winner of the Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition. The student project, in partnership with Blackshear Elementary School, is focused on transforming a 33-squarefoot dumpster into a fully functioning home complete with running water, toilet, shower, bed and solar-generated electricity. The project aims to promote living practices that encourage sustainability. The Ford HBCU Community Challenge Competition is an extension of one of Ford Fund’s signature educational programs, The Ford College Community Challenge. The new program, with the theme “Building Sustainable Communities,” was conducted in partnership with the Tom Joyner and Rickey Smiley morning shows, and encouraged HBCU students to design projects that address pressing local community needs. Students were encouraged to creatively address a tangible, unmet community need that touched on at least one of these four areas – mobility, alternative energy, sustainability/water and a systematic approach to meeting community needs. Scholarships will be awarded to the Huston-Tillotson University team, and community grants will be awarded to nonprofits to support implementation of the winning project. “Having the opportunity to both meet these students and listen to them present projects to help us strengthen our communities has been both refreshing and encouraging,” said Shawn Thompson, manager, Ford multicultural marketing. “In the end, this program has allowed us to make an impact in the students’ education, their schools and their communities.” Each finalist team also received funds to support the implementation of its ideas within its community, in addition to iPads for each student member.

Texas Military Forces respond to winter storm DENISON, Texas-- Citizen-Soldiers with the 176th Engineer Brigade, Texas Army National

Guard, provided support to state and local officials during Winter Storm Cleon, as named by the National Weather Service, in north Texas, Dec. 5-9, 2013. At the request of Gov. Rick Perry, about 50 members of the Grand Prairie-based brigade suited up in cold-weather gear and headed out in Humvees and Light Medium Tactical Vehicles (LMTVs) to help preposition state assets as the storm approached. Soldiers were stationed along the major highways here, as well as in Wichita Falls. In fact, preliminary reports from the Texas Military Forces Joint Operations Center indicate the deployed Soldiers aided more than 120 stranded vehicles, conducted more than 225 welfare checks and assisted with the setup of a Red Cross Shelter in Valley View, near Wichita Falls. “We had a great response when the call went out,” said 2nd Lt. Clayton Harrison, an engineer with the brigade’s Lewisville-based 236th Engineering Company. “We were ready to move out less than 12 hours after we got notified that we’d be responding to this storm.” Although no one was quite certain what the storm would bring, Harrison said he and his Soldiers were in contact with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). “According to DPS, we’ll assist in vehicle recovery, especially if they end up shutting down the highway,” he said. On Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, when the storm had come and gone, the real scope of the job ahead was revealed to Harrison and his Soldiers. Although the storm had not dropped much snow on the area, it was the ice underneath that proved to be the biggest challenge for those on the highways. “We’re from Boise, and thought this would be no big deal,” said Jonathan Bilger, a pulled over motorist who was passing through to visit family. “We get the snow all the time, but the ice, that’s harder to deal with. We’re just sliding around like a hockey puck.” With traffic flow a top priority, members of the Texas Military Forces conducted 24 hour a day operations monitoring and assisting citizens along Highways 75, 82, 380 and Interstate 35 near Denison. Simultaneously, personnel from the 840th Engineer Company monitored flow on the icy and slushy roadways of Highways 281, 181, Interstate 35 East and West, and I-20, near Weatherford and Denton. “Those guys are great,” Bilger said, as he gestured toward several of the Soldiers hooking up chains to tow a stranded 18-wheeler. “They’re out here, helping out, when most of us are just trying to figure out how to get home fastest.” This view was also shared by the Soldiers’ leadership as well. “These men and women are the epitome of what the Texas Military Forces stands for,” said Col. Patrick Hamilton, commander of domestic operations for the Texas Military Forces. “These Citizen-Soldiers volunteered their time, at a moment’s notice, to serve their fellow citizens during a time of need.” “It’s situations like this that show the caliber of our service members andtheir ‘Always Ready, Always There’ mentality,” Hamilton said.

"Texas joins the rest of the world in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela, one of history’s bravest leaders. His sacrifice and courage in the face of unspeakable hardship demonstrated the extent to which some must fight for their freedom. We must all honor his legacy as we continue the struggle to improve all peoples’ lives. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family." Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) “Nelson Mandela has been a courageous hero of the international civil rights movement. His life stands as a timeless example of freedom, justice and sacrifice for the greater good of South Africa and the world.

As the first black President of South Africa, his courageous lifelong commitment to the principles of democracy have - and continue to inspire me. Even today in America, the freest nation on Earth, we should strive to live by his example as our fight for justice and equal rights continues. U.S. Representative Marc Veasey, TX-33

God. We are grateful and thankful for the results of this man’s life. In the love, in the unity, in just the faith that the people of South Africa could walk in as a result of what he demonstrated. We celebrate his life, and we celebrate his legacy. Creflo Dollar World Changers Church International

My condolences to the family and loved ones of Nelson Mandela and to the people of the Republic of South Africa and all of Africa. I had the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela on several occasions. It is true that he was a transformational leader; I also visited Robben Island and saw the prison where he lived and worked and the cell in which he was incarcerated. Mandela’s is a very moving journey, one that carried the dreams and aspirations of an entire nation and world of people ready for change and alleviation of suffering. And to all of us who work for the day that oppression is a phenomenon unknown to humankind. Cynthia McKinney Former U.S. Rep.

Arguably the world’s greatest moral leader, his contributions to freedom and equality across our world are countless. He showed us what true leadership and compassion is, and its potential to change the world. I will forever treasure the privilege of spending time with him. My first meeting with Mr. Mandela in 1995 was a unique experience that was an absolute realization that I was standing in the presence of greatness. Later meetings were just as inspirational and I continued to be in awe of both his charisma and his humility. In response to his infamous 27 years of imprisonment he showed the world a sermon stressing that only love can conquer hate. Mr. Mandela’s refusal to hate and his lack of bitterness in the face of bigotry and hatred continue to stand as an example for the world to follow. Though South Africa elected him as its president, to many he was much more; a moral compass in a time of great intolerance and turmoil. In effect, he was seen as President of the world. And while the very soul of South Africa, his life was indeed also a gift to a global society. His struggle and search for freedom, justice, and equality for all South Africans gave rise to added freedom, justice, and equality for all people. In summary, Mr. Mandela committed his life to the fierce struggle to eliminate the notion of better or lessor and superior and inferior human beings. He gave everything to the struggle and he would have given his life if need be for the liberation of South Africa. The miracle of 1994 could not have been achieved by any one person. Few would deny that “Mandela was the chief architect. South Africa will forever miss Nelson Mandela, as will we all. His influence on the fight against global inequality will continue to live on in our hearts and souls. Let the world smile and rejoice for the 95 years we were given with Nelson Mandela. Rep. Helen Giddings

“The world lost a hero of the antiapartheid movement and a model for the pursuit of justice and peace worldwide. Nelson Mandela’s dignity in the face of fear and discrimination created a path for all of us in our quest to build a fairer world. He inspired the people of South Africa to move beyond one of the most painful period of their history and embrace equal rights for all of their citizens. Mandela leaves a legacy of striving to find the good and the promise in all people and I hope we will see the likes of such a leader again. I send my condolences to the family of Mandela and to the people of South Africa. Congressman Henry Cuellar To all of our partners in South Africa, today we lost a great man. But we really didn’t lose him, because we know that to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. Iit was the passing of a great man, Nelson Mandela, who I refer to as the father of democracy. Our prayers go out with a nation, our prayers go out for a nation, our prayers go out for a people who had the opportunity to reap the benefits of a great man of

Hall: Mandela - A Better Man Quit Playin’

The scene was set. It was the former township of Soweto on the “Southside” of Johannesburg. The same Black enclave that White Afrikaners used to avoid at all costs. But today a King was being remembered. “Madiba” the most prolific man of his own tribe of the same name, was receiving the regal treatment that he deserved. God bless Rolihlahla Mandela, who was later named Nelson by his first grade English teacher. If nothing else, hearing President Barack Hussein Obama at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela assured me of one thing; Obama can read. Those of us who anticipate certain speeches from certain leaders, were taken aback a few years ago. As Obama delivered the Nobel Peace Prize speech in Oslo, Norway, we thought maybe he read the sign wrong and thought he was pontificating at an NRA Convention. Possibly embarrassed by the suddenness

by Vincent Hall

of his assent to the Nobel Prize reserved for the world’s most renowned peace propagators, Obama gave a Reaganesque like speech that sounded like a permit to bring war on anyone, anywhere, in the name of peace. But there is something about the death of your relatives and those philosophically akin that will bring out the real you. Mandela died so that Obama could live and BO wanted to make the best of the moment. There was every earnest intent to pen this piece about the life, legacy, labor, love and liberating spirit of Nelson Mandela. But a fitting tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela could not concentrate on his person; those words must concentrate on his ability to create passion in others. If you’re looking for way to remember how valuable the life of Nelson Mandela was, you can do it in the weeks and years to come. There will not be a stuffed stadium and throngs of people when former Vice

President Dick Cheney dies. Dignitaries from all nations and people of all races will not hasten toward the sacred site of his demise or his final resting place. There won’t be a similar international outpouring when F. W. de Klerk is laid to rest. There were no mourners en masse of this latitude and longitude for Bull Connor, George Wallace, Adolf Hitler and there won’t be for Justice Clarence Thomas. Eulogies of grandeur and largesse are never wasted on those voices who shout at the world from the wrong side of history. Nelson Mandela and the spirit of his convictions will live again and I pray that it will be in the person of Barack Obama. And maybe, just maybe this is the day we will point to where he began his true sojourn toward the endless war for human dignity. That moment that commenced a full fleshing out of what Obama believes about the poor and those susceptible to the heartless wielding of indiscriminate power around the globe. As he stood there tall, erect, handsome and efficient with words, Barack Obama had to find some semblance in his imprisonment in America to Mandela’s imprisonment in South Africa. On this day, BO did not have to face the hecklers that dog him from the halls of Congress to the

sticks of Middle America. He did not have to worry about being called a Kenyan as if it were a slur of the worst order. Barack Obama seemed to shake off the chains of his own political oppressors and realize that the struggle for peace and equality is war and not a sociological debate. We must realize that the true measure of Nelson Mandela’s greatness cannot be found in who he was, it can only be found in what so many other men and women are

not; but can be! As Obama would say in his speech; “Mandela makes me want to be a better man! Vincent L. Hall is an author and awardwinning columnist.

How are you living? Living a life... The death of President Nelson Mandela touched the lives of so many of all ages. He was the good that we each deeply want to see in ourselves. Upon hearing the news, immediately I thought about an old friend, Pius Njawe, and recalled sitting in the offices of Le Messager Newspaper in Cameroon, looking at a picture of Pius and President Mandela together. The two had similar stories. While President Mandela spent 27 years in prison, all because of his desire to eradicate injustices; Pius Njawe spent about a year in prison, but hewas arrested more than 125 times as he used his publication to address social ills and corrupt governments. In addition to receiving the Percy Qoboza Award from the National Association of Black Journalists, in 2000, Pius was named one of International Press Institute’s 50 World Press Freedom Heroes of the previous 50 years. During my week-long visit it was apparent that Pius was held in high esteem by the “people.” Whether we were at the airport, traveling through various areas or visiting businesses, people showed their love for and appreciation of Pius and Le Messager. He was their hero, an unyielding soldierin the struggle for freedom. It was a sad day almost a year after

One African American Woman’s Opinion

by Cheryl Smith

LeMessager celebrated its 30th year in existence, Pius was killed in a car accident while visiting America. In his obituary, the New York Times described him as “a symbol of opposition to the autocratic

regime of (President) Paul Biya.” There are so many other valiant men and women who have occupied time and space on this earth, leaving an indelible mark, while also leaving the world in a much better place.

As this year comes to a close, and as we prepare to celebrate the life of President Mandela, it is imperative that we reexamine, reassess and possibly re-direct ourselves. After all we have so much and can do so much more if we focus on living a life worthy of celebrating. In July under the leadership of Rep. Helen Giddings and a stellar committee we observed Nelson Mandela International Day. The only thing that would have made it better would have been having President Mandela with us. The cover portrait is the beautiful work of Nile Livingston. The talented young artist is making her mark. I know we will be hearing more from her and seeing

more of her exquisite works. And, when her time on this earth comes to an end, her legacy, like that of Pius and Mr. Mandela, will be worthy of a celebration. I know, it’s easier to just exist, to live from day to day, doing your own thing. Those are the people, however, that the Rev. Al Sharpton says are the hardest to deliver a eulogy for. Instead the eulogist has to either go off on a tangent about some story that will be soothing to the family or “hallucinate” a eulogy. Mr. Mandela could have easily denounced his beliefs and received an entirely different outcome. But who would have benefited? Instead he fought the good fight, standing for what was right, regardless of the penalty, and like other great leaders he will always be remembered. We each have to make a decision about our lives. By choosing to live, over just existing, this world would be such a better place. After all, what’s the difference between someone who is on life support for 50 years and someone who just exists for 50 years? Not a thing! But that person who really lives, oh they are the ones whose shoulders we stand on. Can someone stand on your shoulders? Are we living lives worth remembering or celebrating?

We’d love to hear your opinion. Write to publisher@Texasmetronews.com

Nelson Mandela was arrested in a countrywide police swoop of 156 activists on 5 December 1955, which led to the 1956 Treason Trial. Men and women of all races found themselves in the dock in the marathon trial that only ended when the last 28 accused, including Mr. Mandela were acquitted on 29 March 1961. On 21 March 1960 police killed 69 unarmed people in a protest at Sharpeville against the pass laws. This led to the country’s first state of

emergency on 31 March and the banning of the ANC and the Pan Africanist Congress on 8 April. Nelson Mandela and his colleagues in the Treason Trial were among the thousands detained during the state of emergency. During the trial on 14 June 1958 Nelson Mandela married a social worker Winnie Madikizela. They had two daughters Zenani and Zindziswa. The couple divorced in 1996. Days before the end of the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela travelled to Pietermaritzburg to speak at the All-in Africa Conference, which resolved he should write to Prime Minister Verwoerd requesting a non-racial national convention, and to warn that should he not agree there would be a national strike against South Africa becoming a republic. As soon as he and his colleagues were acquitted in the Treason Trial Nelson Mandela went underground and began planning a national strike for 29, 30 and 31 March. In the

face of a massive mobilization of state security the strike was called off early. In June 1961 he was asked to lead the armed struggle and helped to establish Umkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation). On 11 January 1962 using the adopted name David Motsamayi, Nelson Mandela left South Africa secretly. He travelled around Africa and visited England to gain support for the armed struggle. He received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia and returned to South Africa in July 1962. He was arrested in a police roadblock outside Howick on 5 August while

returning from KwaZulu-Natal where he briefed ANC President Chief Albert Luthuli about his trip. He was charged with leaving the country illegally and inciting workers to strike. He was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment which he began serving in Pretoria Local Prison. On 27 May 1963 he was transferred to Robben Island and returned to Pretoria on 12 June. Within a month police raided a secret hide-out in Rivonia used by ANC and Communist Party activists and several of his comrades were arrested. In October 1963 Nelson Mandela joined nine others on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial. Facing the death penalty his words to the court at the end of his famous ‘Speech from the Dock’ on 20 April 1964 became immortalized: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” On 11 June 1964 Nelson Mandela and seven other accused: Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Denis Goldberg, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni were convicted and the next day were sentenced to life imprisonment. Denis Goldberg was sent to Pretoria Prison because he was white while the others went to Robben Island. Nelson Mandela’s mother died in 1968 and his eldest son Thembi in 1969. He was not allowed to attend their funerals. On 31 March 1982 Nelson Mandela was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town with Sisulu, Mhlaba and Mlangeni. Kathrada joined them in October. When he returned to the prison in November 1985 after prostate surgery Nelson Mandela was held alone. Justice Minister Kobie Coetsee had visited him in hospital. Later Nelson Mandela initiated talks about an ultimate meeting between the apartheid government and the ANC. In 1988 he was treated for Tuberculosis and was transferred on 7 December 1988 to a house at Victor Verster Prison near Paarl. He was released from its gates on Sunday 11 February 1990, nine days after the unbanning of

the ANC and the PAC and nearly four months after the release of the remaining Rivonia comrades. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. Nelson Mandela immersed himself into official talks to end white minority rule and in 1991 was elected ANC President to replace his ailing friend Oliver Tambo. In 1993 he and President FW de Klerk jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize and on 27 April 1994 he voted for the first time in his life. On 10 May 1994 he was inaugurated South Africa’s first democratically elected President. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married Graça Machel, his third wife. True to his promise Nelson Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President. He continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund he set up in 1995 and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela-Rhodes Foundation. In April 2007 his grandson Mandla Mandela became head of the Mvezo Traditional Council at a ceremony at the Mvezo Great Place. Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism. His life has been an inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived, to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation.

We Remember, Honor, and Celebrate the Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Nelson Mandela

By Marc Morial President National Urban League "During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." -- Nelson Mandela There are few men or women who leave such an indelible imprint and impact on the world that they are remembered, honored and celebrated by nations near and far for centuries after they depart. There are few people for whom even all the words in every language fail to convey the magnitude and meaning of their lives. Without a doubt in mind or heart, I know that Nelson Mandela is one among a very select few. His dedication, perseverance, forgiveness, and purpose – his life – sparked an inextinguishable fire in the souls of freedom fighters not only in South Africa, but everywhere. The light that he shared will forever serve as an international beacon for fairness, justice and hope for all disadvantaged, impoverished and oppressed people from every corner of the world. Nelson Mandela gave new meaning to the word “inspiration.” After spending 27 years of a life sentence as an apartheid regime political prisoner, he emerged, not with bitterness – but instead with a steadfast resolve to complete his life’s work. His remarkable journey serves as an indisputable example of forgiveness in the face of persecution and triumph through tribulation. I consider myself at once fortunate, humbled and proud to have been a part of the great work of Nelson Mandela’s life during the 1980’s here in the United States. While attending Georgetown University Law Center in 1981, I co-led an effort to boycott the cafeteria operator because of its

investments in South Africa. During this same period, I was a member of the leadership team of the National Black Law Students

Association that pushed for divestment of South African investments by U.S. companies. Early in my career, I was arrested at the South African Embassy as part of a mass, peaceful organized protest led by Walter Fauntroy, Mary Frances Berry and Randall Robinson in support of U.S. economic sanctions against South Africa. As co-leader of the New Orleans Anti-Apartheid Coalition, I helped to successfully advocate for the New Orleans Public Employee Pension Board’s divestment in U.S. companies who had holdings in South Africa. When the U.S. Congress ultimately passed sanctions against South Africa, I could only hope that Nelson Mandela knew that his army now extended beyond the borders of South Africa to subsequent generations of freedom activists and advocates around the world – even in the world’s greatest democracy – helping to continue the work he

started. After the election of President Mandela, as mayor of New Orleans I signed an economic and friendship agreement in 1994 between Johannesburg and New Orleans, one of the first U.S. cities to do so. It was an indescribable honor. Nelson Mandela’s efforts to create a new, multi-racial democracy weren’t just an example of unwavering leadership, humanity and compassion for me, but also for the countless millions who will follow and study him as one of the world’s great leaders for centuries to come. I often wonder if his parents knew when they named him Rolihlahla (common translation: “troublemaker”) how prophetic that was or how ironic it would be that he would grow up to be an international symbol of peacemaking. But the “troublemaking” that Nelson Mandela undertook was of a different kind. It was the kind that sees legislated injustice, race-based inequality and economic despair and seeks to disrupt an institutionalized system of oppression and discrimination. It is the kind that motivates all of us in the Urban League Movement to continue to fight for opportunity parity and economic equality every day in hundreds of communities across America. Nelson Mandela gave a voice to those who had been silenced. He brought hope to those who had been stripped of their dreams. He awakened a nation – and ultimately a world – to the boundless possibilities of following one’s purpose. Today, we stand with the people of South Africa and with the international community in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela. We remember, honor, and celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy. The world could use a few more “Rolihlahlas.”

The Gospel According to “Mr. B”

9

Reality show returns to TLC to positive reviews

John (Sr) and John (Jr) Beckwith, back in the day. Inset: John (Jr) today . By T. D. English I Messenger It’s not likely that John Beckwith Sr. knew exactly what was before him when he boarded that bus from Ferriday, Louisiana in the mid 1960s. He wasn’t coming to Dallas with the intent of starting what would later be the number one funeral home in the National Funeral Director and Morticians Association. He was leaving Louisiana because the Ku Klux Klan had told him he’d better. After witnessing others in his civil rights organization murdered and even set on fire, Beckwith took heed to the late night phone call that suggested that he was next. At that point, Mr. Beckwith’s dreams of relocating to Dallas were more about survival than success. Whether he planned for it or not, the next 50 years would prove to set the stage for a funeral home business and his son, John Beckwith Jr. would do more than ride shotgun with Dad, he’d learn early on to take the reins and run with. Most people in the southern sector of the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area of Texas are well acquainted with John Beckwith Jr. After all, if he hasn’t served one of them a warrant in his capacity as deputy constable, he may have stood before them to deliver a sermon as an ordained minister. In most cases however, Beckwith is known for his tenderness and strength in a most difficult time. That sad moment of making the final plans for a loved one. As Beckwith Jr., (Mr. B.) put it, being there to serve people is not just a job that he happens to be very good at, it’s his ministry. And everything that he has, does and is he attributes to that calling. “I learned the business early,” said Mr. B. “My very first job in the funeral home was as Funeral Director in Charge. Dad allowed me the opportunity of on-the-job training and when I messed up, he cleaned it up and we just kept going.”

And go they did. From the opening of the original funeral home in Waxahachie in 1980 to the new and improved Dallas location five years later, Golden Gate Funeral Homes saw an increase of 150 cases a year. By 1988 the funeral home had gone from 200 to 800 annual funerals and a coveted position in the community. So when the largest funeral home corporation in America began to approach and purchase mom and pop funeral homes in the Metroplex in 1988 and again in 1998, Golden Gate Funeral Home was primed and positioned to completely ignore the extremely generous offers of a buyout. “We were and still are family-owned and operated,” stressed Mr. B. “We had an obligation to our employees, our community and our families to continue to be a staple in the community. You can’t 4155 S. R.L. Thornton Fwy Dallas, TX 75224 214-941-7332 Office 214-374-4609 Fax

put a dollar amount on commitment and if we’re nothing else we are committed.” Although selling wasn’t an option, competing had to be. For the next 15 years, Mr. B stood on the forefront of the funeral business and applied everything he’d learned to every opportunity that presented itself. It’s difficult to imagine that the Mr. B of today was ever the young up-and-coming funeral director known as John Jr. Now, nearly three decades later, as he sits in the front office of the 20,000 square foot funeral home and crematory, the CEO of funeral homes serving Texas and Louisiana is regarded as the funeral home business marketing guru. Beginning with his 2005 commercial that received more than three million YouTube hits to his TLC

reality show ‘Best Funeral Ever’, Mr. B is catapulting the industry well past the traditional boundaries that had been the norm. “The TV show (Best Funeral Ever) has allowed us to introduce something new to the general public” said Mr. B. “It was time for people to see past all the limitations that were associated with the funeral business and start realizing that just as no two people are the same, no two funerals should be the same.” When “Best Funeral Ever” originally aired in the latter part of 2012, the public wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Facebook, Twitter and the mainstream media were all a buzz with statements of distaste and disillusions. People couldn’t understand what it meant and why it had to be on TV. Even some members of the African American community suggested that this show could singlehandedly set back the race a couple 100 years. Mr. B countered that “‘Best Funeral Ever’ was always meant to be a vehicle for education and advertisement and it really hurt when people didn’t see that. “I never had any expectations for America but I was disappointed at the statements that were made by people that we do business with and our community.” Regardless of the naysayers, Mr. B and TLC continued their collaboration for 16 more episodes of ‘Best Funeral Ever’ that began airing in early December, Monday nights at 9pm There are features of a funeral for a man who loved breakfast, a celestial marriage and an Olympic service, to name a few. According to Mr. B, nothing about the show has changed and they’re “still giving families what they asked for.” Recent reviews show that this time the general public seems to regard the show as a lot less upsetting and a little more entertaining. “We started people to talking about funeral services again, which will get us back down to the 5% cremations that we had 30 years ago and away from the 30 % that we’re seeing today. And if we can get people talking and laughing, then I think we’ve accomplished something,” said Mr. B. Golden Gate Funeral Home has evolved from its mere 800 yearly cases to upward of 2500. They host a weekly radio show and local television show both under the moniker of “Ask the Undertaker.” John Beckwith Sr. is now semi-retired and extremely proud of the innovation and accomplishments of his son. He now regards that threat on his life all those years ago as the defining moment in his life. The funeral home is known for its Stepping with Attitude Team (SWAT) of dancing pall bearers and have even given classes for professional mourners. In addition to Golden Gate providing services for babies 0 -12 years at no charge, they work with hospice companies and AIDS organizations to provide services for the indigent. Although the business has grown by leaps and bounds and most of the members of the Dallas staff are regarded as official reality TV stars, Mr. B says not one of those things is the scriptural premise by which his funeral home is operated. “Everything that I do is just representative of what I believe. I believe that funerals should be a special, individual celebration. I believe that we can change people’s ideas about final wishes. I believe completely in the services that we provide and I believe that the people we provide services for are very pleased. At the end of the day with everything that we do, all we want to hear is our Heavenly Father and our families say ‘Well done.’”

Ask Alma

Should I Get Involved or Mind my Business? Dear Alma, A male friend of mine moved to my city for a 6-month work assignment. To welcome him to the area, I took him to dinner and introduced him to my local friends. Well, I just learned that he has been having a sexual relationship with a sorority sister, who’s also my best friend. I am uncomfortable with this situation because my male friend has a live-in girlfriend who has been with him for over eight years. I feel like I need to say something, especially now that his assignment may be extended and his live-in girlfriend is planning a visit. My girlfriend says she knows it’s temporary and that she plans to break up with him before his significant other arrives. She also confided to me that he told her that he loves her but cannot leave his live-in and doesn’t know what to do. She is not a dumb girl. She’s an attorney, and she’s got it going on. Do you think it‘s really love? Should I get involved or mind my business? Vicky

Dear Vicky, If this were my BFF, I would say something like this: “What the hell…Really!! What are you thinking!” LMBO Naaw; just kidding. Don’t do that. I’m a firm believer in what my Mama use to say: “You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” You want to get her attention, so confront her in a manner that she can embrace. I can sense the pride and admiration you have for your friend when you talk of her accomplishments. Granted, one’s occupation doesn’t exempt them from making unwise decisions. Anyway, your attorney-girlfriend is rationalizing her actions by thinking she’s really not being a skank because technically he’s not married. And since technically he’s not married, she can follow this yellow brick road and see where it leads. Step up to the bench, my sistah, so you can hear me when I say this ain’t Kansas and, no, Sweetie, he’s not in love with you. He’s in really, really like, and I don’t blame him. He’s found a really smart woman to spend quality time with while he’s away from home. He offered you his live-in truth and you accepted it. Explain to your friend that recognizing her true treasures within allows her to be prepared when a mature man comes along. A mature man will offer her the proper love, commitment and devotion she deserves. It’s time to cut it off. Don’t wait for his main squeeze to visit; do it now. Remind her: Don’t settle for a second-hand man. Reach out, give her a fist bump and say: “Stop stumbling in the dark with Mr. Wrong, girl, when you could be dancing in the light with Mr. Right!” Alma

The world lost one of its greatest leaders with the passing of former South African president, Nelson Mandela. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson had the privilege to meet and work with Nelson Mandela and issued the following statement following his passing: “Today the world mourns the loss one of its greatest heroes. President Nelson Mandela was truly a beacon of hope and an inspiration not only to the people of his country, but to the entire world.
