He Is Not A Suspect!
#HeIsNotASuspect is a counter-stereotyping campaign designed to challenge negative images of young African American men. I Messenger is joining Essence Magazine in inviting our readers to post on Instagram and Facebook photos of themselves and a young Black man they care about—a son, brother, nephew, cousin, neighbor or grandson—with a few words explaining why he’s so much more than a stereotype, using the hashtag #HeIsNotASuspect. This is Andre Daron Smith. A graduate of David W. Carter High School, he also attended St. Philip’s School and Community Center, T.L. Marsalis Elementary, Atwell Junior High School. Active in
the R.O.T.C. and Pathfinders; Andre was a member of St. Luke Community United Methodist Church. Andre is stationed in Japan with his wife, Emma, and three children. Even before he donned a uniform, Andre was known as respectful, loving, considerate, intelligent and a true gentleman. He was never, nor ever has he been a suspect and it is my prayer that he never runs into anyone who subjects him to the abuses that many before him have suffered through. I know there are many others who feel the same way. They don’t want their children profiled and mistreated because of the color of their skin. Cheryl Smith

NAACP congratulates Boone Isaacs on position as Motion Picture Academy Chief Boone Isaacs will be the first African-American in 86-year history of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science (Baltimore, MD) – The NAACP congratulates Cheryl Boone Isaacs, who was named the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently. The Academy, which produces the annual Oscar ceremony, has not had a female president since 1983, and has never had an African-American president in its 86-year history. “Cheryl Boone Isaacs is a wonderful selection for an organization that is seeking to expand diversity and inclusion,” said NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock. “As one racial barrier is broken, we are excited to see what Ms. Isaacs will do to break down even more barriers in the industry. “We recognize the election of Cheryl Boone Isaacs as an historic moment in Hollywood,” stated Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP. “This appointment sends a clear message to the rest of Hollywood. We believe her selection will encourage the studios and networks to empower more women and minorities throughout the entertainment industry.” “Cheryl Boone Isaacs’ appointment is another step in the T:6.75”

right direction for the Academy and diversity in Hollywood,” stated Robin Harrison of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau. “We congratulate her and look forward to the Academy’s work and influence under her new leadership.” Isaacs has led a distinguished career as a marketing and publicity consultant, previously working at New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures. At the Academy, she previously served as First Vice President, and has served in every other office within the organization. Her role will include selecting a host for the Oscars telecast. In July of this year, the Academy sought to expand racial and ethnic diversity among its voting members by inviting 276 new members from various backgrounds. The Academy also hired former NAACP Hollywood Bureau Executive Director Vicangelo Bulluck as Managing Director of Outreach and Strategic Initiatives, to help foster inclusion and diversity.

Flores introduces Veterans’ Health Care Legislation WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-TX) introduced H.R. 2876, the Fairness for America’s Heroes Act of 2013. This bill would grant the Department of Veterans Affairs additional time to prepare for the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. “Today, I introduced legislation that would protect our nation’s veterans from the implementation of Obamacare. The Department of Veterans Affairs has recently testified before Congress that they do not have a plan or strategy to implement Obamacare. Before forcing our nation’s veterans into a health care plan that is not ready for prime time, my legislation will offer the VA a one year delay that would guard our veterans from the uncertainty of the implementation of Obamacare. “Currently, Department of Veteran Affairs has yet to develop and implement a complete strategy to communicate with veterans about the potential implications of Obamacare. Less than six months away from the full implementation of Obamacare, there is widespread confusion among veterans and their families about how this law will impact their lives, futures and health care decisions. “I am firmly committed to fully repealing and replacing this bureaucrat-controlled, budget-busting, job-destroying health care law. Simply delaying implementation of Obamacare for veterans will not solve its underlying problem, but it will add greater pressure to the Department of Veteran Affairs to prepare and implement an effective plan that will help the needs for veterans and their families.” Congressman Bill Flores represents the 17th District of Texas and is an entrepreneur, former energy executive, Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and member of the House Budget, Natural Resources and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
I-635 Ramp closed through August
The ramp from Northbound Dallas North Tollway to eastbound Interstate 635 will be closed through Aug. 20 for complete reconstruction as part of the LBJ Express project. The five-week ramp closure, which began July 14, will allow the direct-connector ramp to be rebuilt all at once rather than staging construction that would have required 11 full-weekend closures. This schedule shoul allow the new ramp to open before classes resume for the new school year. Crews are re-constructing the I-635 bridge over the Dallas North Tollway and portions of the connecting ramps within the interchange. Closures of the Tollway are planned and scheduled occasionally to accommodate the work. Whenever they are possible, closures occur at night and on weekends during offpeak hours whenever possible. To learn more about the LBJ Express project, a project of the Texas Department of Transportation, visit www.lbjexpress.com. You can find real-time road conditions, scheduled lane closures and other traffic advisories at www.lbjexpress.com or www.NTTA.org.

Re-introduction of the Women, Peace and Security Act of 2013 Washington, DC -- U.S. Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30), Janice Schakowsky (Ill.-09), Mike Honda (CA-17), and Niki Tsongas (MA-03) re-introduced the Women, Peace and Security Act. The bill promotes the active participation of women in all aspects of conflict prevention and resolution; integrates the interests of affected women into conflict-prevention strategies; promotes women’s physical safety and economic security; and ensures that women have access to aid distribution services. “The Women, Peace and Security Act is an essential component in our efforts to continue to provide women with peace and security around the world,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “The burden of peacemaking and peace building must be a shared responsibility by both men and women, and I urge my colleagues to sign on to this important legislation.” “Women have a critical role to play in building peace. This week, as Israeli and Palestinian envoys meet to begin the process of forging a peace agreement, Israel has sent a woman as chief negotiator,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “This legislation promotes the active participation of women in the process of conflict resolution, ensuring that their voices are heard and their concerns addressed in the process of reaching a peace deal.” “I applaud President Obama for his leadership in establishing a U.S. National Action Plan (NAP) to include women’s voices and perspectives in decisionmaking processes in countries threatened by war, poor governance and violence,” said Congressman Honda. “It is now the responsibility of Congress to ensure the full implementation and delivery of NAP’s goals so that women are equitable partners in all aspects of peace building and conflict prevention. Amplifying women’s voices and perspectives and ensuring their place at the table are imperatives to achieving longlasting global peace and security.” “Time after time studies have demonstrated that gains for women have a direct positive effect on sustainable development, economic growth and ending violence,” said Congresswoman Tsongas. “In addition to being a moral issue, the investment in women and girls is a matter of security, for the

international community and here on our own shores. It is time to amplify their voices so that justice, peace and equality can be heard the world over.”
Students learning value & ethics of public service, locally & abroad DALLAS (SMU) — Eight SMU students are spending their summers as close as Dallas and as far away as Uganda learning first hand the value of helping people and communities in need — and many are blogging about their experiences. The Maguire Ethics and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Internships are sponsored by SMU’s Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics & Public Responsibility. Each intern is responsible for finding agencies to sponsor their projects, which ultimately are selected
for their proposals’ ethical and social justice merits. “These students are setting the course for the rest of their lives and are an inspiration to those who teach and support them. As their efforts show, they are indeed world changers,” says Maguire Ethics Center Director Rita Kirk. Such public service internship grants “help students like me pursue internships in the nonprofit and public sectors,” says Rahfin Faruk. “With increasing financial pressures, I’m extremely thankful the Maguire Center has helped me gain development and international relations experience, first at Grameen Bank and now at the U.S. Department of State.” The 2013 Maguire Ethics and Irby Family Foundation Public Service Interns and their service projects are: Spencer Bogle (religious studies, Ph.D.): Conducting research with the Kibo Group to explore local perception of its water project work in Jinja, Uganda. Kerri Brown (anthropology, Ph.D.): Working as a research assistant for CRIOLA to identify health disparities among Afro-Brazilian women in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rahfin Faruk (economics, math, political science, public policy, ’15): Working for the U.S. State Department at the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in Washington, D.C. Danielle Katz (Spanish, ’15): Volunteering in the classrooms of public schools with UBELONG in Cusco, Peru. Julia Maddalena (religious studies, Ph.D.): Collaborating with the Dallas Women’s Foundation and Dallas Habitat for Humanity to conduct ethnographic field research in Dallas. Nayeem Mohammed (law, business, J.D./M.B.A.): Working as an enforcement attorney investigating possible federal securities laws violations for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Fort Worth. Kyle Nakatsuka (anthropology, biology, Latin American studies, ’15): Observing, conducting and contributing research at Ka Ola Mamo Native Hawaiian Health Care Systems clinic serving native Hawaiians in Honolulu. He also will be conducting research in Taos, N.M., at the Taos County Economic Development Corporation. Elizabeth Ricketts (mechanical engineering, ’16): Coordinating educational workshops with the Water Literacy Project in Bangalore, India. For the past 16 years, Public Service Internships have been awarded to nearly 140 SMU students who have served in more than 100 agencies in more than a dozen countries. “By providing students cash awards for public service and ethics research projects, these SMU students can commit to the public service projects they always wanted to do, but didn’t have the financial resources to make possible,” says Candy Crespo, assistant director of the Maguire Ethics Center.

Serving the United States of America DCCCD participates in College Credit for Heroes (Dallas) – Veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq are looking for work in Dallas County. Businesses are looking for qualified employees during a time when they see a shortage of skilled labor. Put those two factors together, add college credit for military experience and training, and provide educational opportunities in information technology through the Dallas County Community College District. What's the result? College Credit for Heroes. DCCCD recently received a $150,000 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission; that grant is enabling the district to create accelerated career paths for industry certification in information technology and an optional internet marketing specialist certificate. The program, offered by all seven colleges in the DCCCD system, reduces the time a veteran needs to complete an associate's degree to 18 months and the certificate in 10 months for those specified areas. “More than 20,000 veterans who live in Dallas County right now are participating in programs that provide education, psychological services, supportive housing and medical services. “As the nation welcomes military personnel who are returning from service in Afghanistan and Iraq, we believe that many of those service members will return to north Texas,” said Joyce Williams, district director for workforce development and education at DCCCD. She added, “Because businesses are facing a shortage of skilled employees, they view veterans as the new workforce, based on the skills they obtained through both their military experience and their sense of commitment to get the job done. We want to offer training that includes their military experience so that we can reduce the amount of time it takes to earn a degree or certificate. As a result, those veterans can enter the workforce more rapidly and find jobs in our communities.” DCCCD's program is called Veteran Success Through Accelerated IT Pathways. College Credit for Heroes was launched in 2011 using $3 million in Workforce Investment Act funds. The program was authorized during the 82nd session of the Texas Legislature. During the program's first phase, the Texas Inter-College Council on Veterans was organized, comprising seven community colleges serving areas with large veteran populations: Alamo Colleges, Central Texas College, Houston Community College, Lee College, Lone Star College, San Jacinto College and Temple College. The program also is supported by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. DCCCD and five other institutions received grants this summer to join College Credit for Heroes for the second phase of the program – Angelo State University, Austin Community College, Grayson College, Tarrant County College District and Texas State Technical CollegeHarlingen. “Service men and women are highly skilled, experienced individuals who have a tremendous amount to offer their communities when they return home after serving their country,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronnyu Congleton. “The expansion of College Credit for Heroes will give veterans greater employment opportunities and will help fulfill the workforce needs of Texas.” DCCCD's grant from TWC started April 19, 2013, and ends June 30, 2014; its goal is to meet workforce needs in Dallas County. “Currently, the seven colleges in DCCCD's system enroll approximately 3,000 veterans; more than 10 percent of those students have selected IT as their major,” explained Williams. “Our primary goal is to provide college credit for these courses to decrease the amount of time a student takes to earn an associate's degree in IT or a workforce IT certificate so that veterans can transition into the workforce quickly.” For more information about the College Credit for Heroes program at DCCCD, contact Joyce Williams, district director of workforce development and education, at (214) 378-1746 by phone or at williamsjoyce@dcccd.edu; or the veterans coordinators at each college, who are listed at www.dcccd.edu/veterans. General information about the College Credit for Heroes program administered by the Texas Workforce Commission is available at vets. texasworkforce.org.

THE LAST WORD by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
mortgages are victims of interest rate variables as they try to dig themselves above ground. Surely, though, students who are financing their education in order to invest in the healthof our nation should have different rules. When I graduated from college in 1974, interest rates hovered between 9 and 10 percent. The student loan interest rate was two percent. Why? My cohort was no more or less brilliant than any other. We were part of our nation’s plan for its future, should be the case for today’s young people. Many hoped that the deal on student loan interest rates would take into account the fact that the federal funds rate (the rate to which the Federal Reserve Bank offers to banks) is well below one percent. From that perspective, even the existing rate of 3.4 percent suggests that the government is taking in more than it give out. It’s complicated – there are other costs that must be considered in the lending process. It’s complicated, but shouldn’t
our students get as close to the same deal that banks and others get? Allowing student loan interest rates to fluctuate, to the detriment of students in an environment when rates are certain to go up is to slap our students in the face. President Obama says he wants more students to graduate from community college or four-year institutions; we need more graduate and professional students in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. It seems hypocritical to articulate these needs and then to undercut the means to meet them. There are more than one trillion dollars outstanding in student loan obligations. The average student graduates with $27,000 in debt. Since nearly half of all students graduate with no debt at all, this means that the average debt for those who borrow is closer to $40,000. Many students with a talent for organizing, human resource allocation, or classroom teaching
are diverted from their goals because their first priority is to pay student loan debt. WE are starving our civil society institution, and those who would serve them, by placing money over affinity and creativity. This has been happening for decades, but the current student loan dustup reminds us that we have not provided the safe space for our young people that we should. The Senate bill passed 80-18 with some Democrats rejecting the bill because of its flaws. Others, like the progressive Senator Elizabeth Warren (DMA), elected as a financial whiz and people’s advocate, chose to go with the one-year “okeydoke rather than dig her heels in for the long run fight. In some ways Warren is right. The finger in the dike approach saves students this year, and so it is better than nothing. When, though, is better than nothing simply not good enough. Stay tuned. The vote on reauthorization of the Higher Education Act will happen next year. Are students waiting and watching? What about parents? Is there a political lobby to turn this mess around? Dr. Julianne Malveaux is a noted economist and president emeritae of Bennett College for Women.

CURRY: Race and the Supreme Court In its latest affirmative action ruling, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, the Supreme Court, ruled the same way it had in its Bakke decision in 1978 and a pair of University of Michigan affirmative action rulings in 2003 – one upholding the law school admissions program (Grutter v. Bollinger) and one striking down the undergraduate admissions process (Gratz v. Bollinger). In each case, the court declared that state universities have a compelling interest that could justify the consideration of race in college admissions because of the benefits that flow to all students from having a diverse student body.
so is to demand the impossible, he wrote in words that ring true today. “In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. There is no other way. And in order to treat some persons equally, we must treat them differently. We cannot – we dare not – let the Equal Protection Clause perpetuate racial supremacy. But that is precisely what has taken place. Right-wing groups
However, all of the court’s decision on affirmative action in higher education were consistent with Justice Anthony Kennedy’s opinion in Fisher, when he wrote for the 7-1 majority: â€œâ€Ś Strict scrutiny imposes on the university the ultimate burden of demonstrating before turning to racial classifications, that available, workable race-neutral alternatives do not suffice.â€? In other words, universities are free to consider race only after seeking solutions that do not involve race. In his concurring opinion in Bakke, Justice Harry Blackmun noted the absurdity of that approach. “I suspect that it would be impossible to arrange an affirmative action program in a racially neutral way and have Your Exposure We Have be it successful. socio-economic status, whether there was only one parent in the home, race and whether English was the primary language spoken in the home. Of all of those factors, Fisher sued on racial grounds.
In its “Brief of Opposition, the university said: “The undisputed evidence demonstrated that Fisher would not have been offered fall admission in 2008 even if she had scored a perfect ‘6’ on her PAI – the portion of the admissions process where race is considered as ‘a factor of a factor of a factor.’"
Justice Blackmun observed how differently race is treated in college admissions.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration. Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. For example, Joe Armstrong, president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, said, “The Supreme Court has turned the clock back on civil rights in the United States. In recent years, this nation has seen an incredible uptick in state and local laws solely intended to suppress and disenfranchise voters. But, instead of ruling to protect all voters, justices have acted to undermine safeguards that are key to our democracy. This is clearly a step in the wrong direction.
However, organizations representing Black elected officials strongly disagree.
In another decision with racial overtones, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, citing progress made since passage of the law.
In her dissent, Ruth Bader Ginsburg stated, "True, conditions in the South have impressively improved since passage of the Voting Rights Act. Congress noted this improvement and found that the VRA was the driving force behind it... Congress also found that voting discrimination had evolved into subtler, second-generation barriers, and that eliminating preclearance would risk loss of the gains that have been made."
Strangely, the National Black Chamber of Commerce submitted a friend of the court brief supporting the termination of the Section 5 preclearance provision of the Voting Rights Act. In his weekly NNPA News

This is the season of sizzle! From outdoor concerts, to family reunions and swim parties; there is always a “sun-thing to do. The reality is that not only is it hot outside, sun exposure is drying and damaging to the hair. Too much sun exposure often leaves your tresses brittle, frizzy, and with ragged ends. I’d like you to consider these Do’s and Don’ts to maintain your summer mane: 1. Do protect your hair from heat. An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure! Use products like serums or leave-in conditioners that have SPF or heat protectants. Wear styles that don’t require as much heat such as braids, roller sets and ponytails. When directly in the sun, wear hats or protective gear when possible. 2. Don’t over-style. To help protect the hair from drying, let your hair dry naturally as often as possible. Only blow dry or use heated tools when necessary. This will help to protect your hair from more heat exposure. 3. Do moisturize your hair. Lavish your hair with

moisturizing shampoos and deep penetrating moisturizing conditioners. These products help to replenish the moisture lost in the sun. 4. Do trim your ends. Because the summer can be so harsh on your hair, it’s a good idea to trim often to keep it looking neat and tame. 5. Do use a satin pillowcase or scarf. This should be a practice all year long, but particularly in the summer. Satin helps to maintain the hair’s moisture; cotton absorbs moisture. Do shampoo after each swim. Swimming is a great past time for the heat, but the chlorine from the pool or salt water from the beach can be extremely harsh and drying to your hair. Do spray leavein conditioner on dry hair before entering the pool. Once your hair has absorbed the conditioner, it becomes like a sponge and won’t be able to absorb much of the chlorine. 6. Do drink plenty of water. It is always important to drink water, but hydration is crucial for both your physical and hair health when dealing with the summer’s heat. I can’t say it too much: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Summer should be the most care free time of the year. However; for some, caring for your hair in the summer is a nightmare. Using these few tips will help you make it through the summer like the Diva you are!

5 Simple Ways to Get Your Wife In the Mood By Martine Foreman
didn’t expect you to do. Be more affectionate.
Have you been trying to figure out how to get your wife in the mood? Compatibility and great communication are the cornerstones of any healthy marriage, but you know what else matters a whole lot? A great life in the bedroom. People can front all they want, but when that intimacy is missing, the marriage suffers: it’s inevitable. Sure, you don’t have to be in the mood to have sex, but how fun is sex that feels obligatory? It’s not fun at all if you ask me. Sex should be enjoyable – an opportunity for you to connect with your spouse. Certainly, there are a number of factors that impact your sex life, but being in the mood is definitely a huge piece of the puzzle. So, of course, keeping things hot and steamy in the bedroom (or wherever you choose to have some fun) is a shared responsibility. I definitely get that, so please don’t read this and think I’m implying that it all falls on the man. I don’t think that’s true at all. But, I’ll be honest; right now, my concern is the ladies. I want to share a few tips with the men out there about what they can do to get their ladies in the mood. Nothing complicated at all – just a few simple tips that can turn your wife on and keep her wanting more. Do an unexpected chore. Nothing makes a woman happier than taking something off of her to-do list without her having to actually do it. Even if you split household responsibilities with your wife, surprise her and do something she
I am not talking about the usual goodbye and hello kisses. I mean give her a long hug if she’s had a bad day, snuggle with her, and make her feel loved, without making her feel like your are just doing it to get some. Encourage her to take a “time-out.â€? In case you didn’t know, no woman wants to have sex (at least not the enjoyable kind) when she feels overwhelmed and stressed out. Give her a chance to read a book, take a long bath, or go have dinner with a friend. She’ll be a lot happier for it – and so will you. Let her sleep in more often. You know what puts me in the mood? Not being exhausted. Women tend to overdo it, and sometimes they just keep running on empty, unless someone tells them to stop. Tell her to stop and get some rest. A rested wife makes for a happy (sex) life. Talk and Listen. I know that some men actually enjoy talking, but from my experience many men don’t feel the need to say much. Talk to your wife about your day, see what’s going on with her, and most importantly, listen – and I mean really listen. When a woman feels heard, she feels appreciated. I can’t speak for all women, but feeling appreciated puts me in the mood every single time. Ladies, what gets you in the mood? Men, what are your tips for getting your wife in the mood? Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Martine Foreman is the editor and co-founder of JustDiva, a lifestyle email publication for today’s Modern Black Woman. ESSENCE sparks national conversation on racial profiling with #HeIsNotASuspect Social Media Campaign - ESSENCE, the preeminent media brand for AfricanAmerican women, is driving the conversation around the issue of racial profiling with an impassioned counterstereotyping social media campaign, #HeIsNotASuspect. Thousands have joined the movement – with close to 10,000 taking to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to respond to ESSENCE's powerful call to action aimed at stopping profiling among young Black men. ESSENCE announced its goal to garner 20,000 #HeIsNotASuspect posts celebrating African-American men by August 28, 2013 in commemoration of the historic March on Washington. This critical dialogue began on the pages of ESSENCE magazine with an award-winning article in the June 2012 issue titled, The Danger Outside: How Can We Protect Our Black Boys?, and has continued throughout 2013 with Guns Down, an editorial series exploring how gun violence impacts our communities. The conversation was also brought to life at this summer's
19th annual ESSENCE Festival, where a panel of mayors moderated by Rev. Al Sharpton, including Newark Mayor Corey Booker, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu convened to discuss the culture of violence in urban communities. In addition, ESSENCE, in partnership with the City of New Orleans, hosted Love, Loss & Life at the ESSENCE Festival as a special prayer vigil for mothers who have lost children to gun violence. Now, #HeIsNotASuspect extends the conversation to social media; providing a personal platform to continue the dialogue. African-American mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers have uploaded a photo of themselves and a young Black man they care about—a son, brother, nephew, cousin, neighbor—telling ESSENCE why he's so much more than a stereotype, and using the hashtag #HeIsNotASuspect. The grassroots effort has also gained traction with traditional media outlets around the world,
"As more than 100 rallies took place across the country this past weekend in response to the Zimmerman verdict, our community of ESSENCE readers are actively engaged in an important national dialogue about saving our sons from negative profiling," said ESSENCE Editor, Vanessa K. Bush. "ESSENCE's #HeIsNotASuspect campaign offers a forum for our community to take control of our stories and declare to the world
Vanessa K. Bush
including BBC, CNN, HLN, NBC, Time, Steve Harvey Morning Show, among others, in direct response to the George Zimmerman verdict. Additionally, some of the country's most influential leaders and personalities, including Steve Harvey, Iyanla Vanzant, Terry McMillan, Roland Martin, Donna Brazile, Dr. Ian Smith, Bishop Noel Jones, Dr. Steve Perry, LaLa Anthony, Chef Roble and Victoria Rowell among many others, have taken a stand in support of this initiative.
that young Black men are to be celebrated, not feared. Please join the conversation by posting your heartfelt words and images to help us reach our goal of 20,000!" For more on this campaign, visit Essence.com/ heisnotasuspect.

This live music REVIVAL will take you on a journey back to when you first fell in love with GOOD music. Giving you the thrill of of real hiphop, jazz, R&B and neo-soul vibes. REMEMBER: “IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT... YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!” Lorenzo Ferguson, a.k.a “Zo!”: producer/keyboardist of The Foreign Exchange Music Music was always present in and around the Ferguson house, which led to Zo! taking piano lessons at age 6… which he absolutely despised. The idea of working toward a Major League Baseball career served as the greatest inspiration through his teenage years much more so than the concept of practicing music. After his parents consistently pushed and encouraged him to stick with music, Zo! discovered a newfound passion by teaching himself how to play piano by ear by age 11. Zo! got his production start in 1992 when his parents brought home a Proteus MPS keyboard and a Brother PDC100 sequencer for him to figure out. Since then, he has emphasized the use of live instrumentation as the blueprint for his music while constantly looking to expand his sound with each album release. Carmen Rodgers “Rodgers lets the listener (and her man) know from the get go where things stand, opening with a defiant tone on the neo-soul midtempo, “Tell Your Story”: “Tell your story at the door / ‘cause I’ve heard it all before / and now I’m not so sure if I want this love anymore.” By the time of the terrific next song, the acoustic gem “Home,” Carmen is more reflective but just as resolved to end the relationship: “You say you want to come home / but home is where the heart lived / and I just want to
move on / so should you.””— Chris Rizik, SoulTracks.com Where: The Prophet Bar / Historic Deep Ellum 2548 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75226 Time: Doors at 8:00pm & Show at 9:00pm

Vines and wines: New El Centro class teaches taste and technique
Vines and wines. It's all about growing the grapes. Or maybe it's enology – making the wine. Either way, a delicious glass of wine depends on an excellent crop of grapes and a process that creates one of the most popular drinks in the world. “Vines and Wines” also is the name of a new credit course at El Centro College that will take students around the world (from their seats and online) to vineyards and wineries from almost every continent. They will learn how to identify types of wine grapes, wine-growing regions and wine varieties which the wine grapes produce. They also will discuss the history of wine production, explain storage procedures for different types of wines and learn to recognize equipment and proper serving techniques. “The course is a study of the growing regions, production, processing and distribution of domestic and international wines,” explained Gus Katsigris, emeritus professor of food and hospitality at El Centro College, who will teach the course. He added, “We also will host guest speakers – wine merchants and wine makers – who will present wines from each region we cover, using sensory
evaluations. Producers, wholesalers and retailers of wines, as well as wine writers, will share their expertise and products with our students, who will learn firsthand from them about the industry.” Katsigris, who has taught this type of course since the late 1990s at both El Centro and the University of North Texas (until 2010), also is writing the textbook for this class. He is providing the textbook free to all students enrolled in the course and is using it for a field test during the fall semester. He plans to combine classroom sensory evaluations (tastings) and guest presentations during each class in addition to online coursework. The three-credit-hour, college-level course is $156 and will be offered during the fall 2013 semester (Aug. 29 to Dec. 12) every Thursday evening from 7 to 8:50 p.m. in room C-160 at the downtown campus of El Centro College, located at Main and Lamar streets in Dallas. Interested students must be enrolled at one of the seven colleges of the Dallas County Community College District system to take this credit course (RSTO 1319). An outside class project also is required.
The continuing education course also is $156; interested individuals do NOT have to be DCCCD students to enroll. For registration information as a CE course, call the El Centro College office of continuing education at (214) 860-2226. Students/participants who sign up for the course must be 21 years of age by the first day of class, in compliance with state law, and proof of age will be kept on file for the course. Enrollment for fall 2013 semester credit courses – including the “Viticulture and Enology” class (RSTO 1319) is under way; the deadline to register is Wed., Aug. 21. From wine to champagne, students will taste and learn about wines from regions of the world that include the United States (regional, Pacific Northwest, California and Texas); France (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, Alsace, Loire, Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon) – both wine and champagne; Italy (Piedmont, Tuscany); Germany and the Iberian Peninsula; South America and Mexico; and Australia and New Zealand. Katsigris is excited to offer this class, which is an opportunity for students to learn more about viticulture and enology
– growing grapes and making wine. He commented that the classes, guest presentations, sensory evaluations and coursework will help students learn new skills. He added, “When students finish this course, they will be familiar with the processes of how wines are evaluated by taste. They will be able to read and understand labels from wines around the world, and they also will understand how wines should be stored – along with inventory techniques associated with storage. In addition to learning the techniques and methods used by wine professionals to present and serve wine at the table (using the proper wine glasses and table settings), they will do it themselves in ‘mise en place’ activities. “Finally, they will have fun and enjoy this course, which will take them around the world as they learn about wine,” said Katsigris. For more information, contact Katsigris at gkatsigris@dcccd.edu.
Sherri Shepherd authors book on weight loss and diabetes Whether on stage or screen, Daytime Emmy Award-winner Sherri Shepherd delights audiences with her magnetic personality and hilarious sense of humor. From her roots in the suburbs of Chicago, Sherri worked her way to becoming a well-known American comedienne, actress, television personality and author. Sharing her passion for staying healthy, Sherri authored PLAN D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes Even If You Don’t Have It (Harper Collins), which debuted April 30 and hit #13 on the New York Times Best Seller List. Growing up in a community she calls the “Diabetes Hall of Fame,” where diabetes was as common as a cold, Sherri thought the consequences of diabetes, such as losing a limb, were just part of getting old. She didn’t truly see how the disease was making its way into her personal story. In her new book PLAN D, Sherri admits she spent many years battling excess weight, ignoring the warning signs of prediabetes, avoiding doctor appointments and denying that she was headed down a
road to the disease. Even when diabetes took her mother’s life at the age of forty-one, Sherri didn’t make the dramatic lifestyle changes she needed. In 2007, she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. She knew it was now time to make changes that would enable her to live a healthy and long life with her family. In PLAN D, Sherri shares her struggle with diabetes and the tools she used to take her life back and take control of her diabetes. One of Sherri’s wellknown roles is as co-host of the daytime talk show The View. In August 2009, Sherri and her co-hosts won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host. That same year, Sherri and her co-hosts were chosen as part of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” by Time magazine, and Forbes ranked The View hosts #11 among the top “30 of the Most Influential Women in Media.” In addition to daytime television Sherri competed in the fourteenth season of ABC’s wildly popular, Dancing with the Stars. She continues to be a formidable player in prime time television frequently guest-starring on the Emmy awardwinning series 30 Rock as Tracy Morgan’s wife, Angie Jordan.
Sherri executive produced and starred in her own sitcom SHERRI on Lifetime and has made laugh out loud appearances in Less than Perfect, Everybody Loves Raymond, Joan of Arcadia, Suddenly Susan and The Jamie Foxx Show. She received rave reviews in the lead dramatic role of Joy White in the Lifetime movie Abducted: the Carlina White Story and most recently co-starred with Katherine Heigl in One for the Money. She has appeared in feature films such as the awardwinning Precious (based on the novel Push), Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Guess Who, Who’s Your Caddy, Beauty Shop and Cellular. Sherri also had a successful run in the critically acclaimed off-Broadway hit Love, Loss and What I Wore. She is also the author of the autobiography, Permission Slips: Every Woman’s Guide to Giving Yourself a Break (Grand Central Publishing). Knowing the heartache and joy of raising a child with special needs, Sherri has partnered with the YAI/ National Institute for People with Disabilities to raise awareness for children and adults with disabilities. Sherri has an eight-yearold son, Jeffrey, and recently married Lamar Sally.
Their wedding was captured by The Style Network and “Wedding Fabulous: Sherri Shepherd Gets Married,” which garnered the highest ratings for a wedding special on the network. Sherri and her family reside in New Jersey.

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Sales Tax Holiday
TEXAS METRO NEWS encourages you to find a child to mentor!
The Texas Legislature established the August Sales Tax Holiday to provide individuals and families a tax free holiday while purchasing school supplies for their children. This year's tax free weekend is from Friday, August 9th until Sunday, August 11th. As in the past, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced below $100. The Sales Tax Holiday has allowed families with school-aged children to make the most of their dollars by saving them about $8 on every $100 spent. The following items listed below, provided by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, will not be taxed. NPR news hires Eric Deggans as tv critic and correspondent
television, media and cultural criticism, and offer context on entertainment trends and their intersection with society and culture in America today. “For many years, I have been a fan of NPR’s super smart journalism and I often fantasized of what it might be like to join their ranks as a contributor, says Deggans. “A position like this one is beyond my wildest dreams; I’m honored and excited by the opportunity to help shape NPR’s coverage of television and pop culture. Deggans joined the Tampa Bay Times in 1995 as a pop music critic, moving to the TV beat in 1997. He spent 2004 on the Times editorial board before returning to the arts desk, first as media writer in 2005, then again as TV critic in 2006. He is the author of Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation. “We are thrilled that Eric is joining NPR, and going to be part of a team that will enhance our coverage of one of the most important social forces in our time, the impact of TV, says Madhulika Sikka, Executive Editor of NPR News.

Ask Gwen Dear Gwendolyn: For 37 years I have given my love to a man that still doesn’t seem to want me for his wife. The romance started years ago. For me, it was “love at first sight. We dated for three years, he got married, got a divorce, and the rest of his life has been with me. Although, we never lived together. I thought this man had actually descended from Heaven when we started dating again. To me, every day was a holiday and every night was a celebration. Gwendolyn, how can some women get any man they want while other women cannot even get one? My mother used to tell me that I was throwing away my life. But one day she said, “It’s good you are happy with him. Yes, I have put in the years but I am not sorry. However, I am at the crossroad of deciding to quit him or continue to court. I am 66 and he is 74. I have been happy all those years

and I am happy now. What do you think I should do? Brenda Dear Brenda: Soon your eyesight will become dim and your bones will become stiff. Therefore, I think you and your friend should continue the courtship. Happiness is a blessing and it does not always come in the form of a marriage license. Ask some married women and they will verify that statement – big time. (Read The Four Factors: Should You Stay, Go or Improve Your Relationship? By Ron Gentile, PhD – Sept. 2010) Let me tell you this: I don’t want to seem hurtful towards you, but you must be realistic. Sure, you could quit him and meet someone else – but if that happens, let him be younger than you. Girl, old age is for real. If you don’t believe it, visit your nursing home facilities. But even in those facilities, people fall in love and marry – even if a nurse has to hold their hands together because of their elderly age, muscles gone. Brenda, you have already given your boyfriend most of your life. You might as well give him — the remainder of it.Â

CELEBRATION ANNIE MYRTLE COLEMAN CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
Annie Myrtle Coleman born July 23, 1913 is the second daughter of the late Mr. John W. Lee Sr. and Mrs. Ruthie A. Lee, born in Fairfield, Texas along with 10 other siblings (seven brothers and three sisters). In July of 1935 she married Mr. Roger Coleman and in this union five children were born. Mary Hicks, Edna Johnson, Roger M. Coleman (deceased), Patricia Smith, and Linda Stewart. 16 Grandchildren and 12 GreatGrandchildren. Annie attended public schools in Freestone County, graduating from Dunbar School of West Mexia, TX in 1931,(while still having to pick cotton during school breaks). Worshiping God was a major part of her upbringing and at the age of 13, she accepted Christ in her life and is still a pivotal part of her life today. She was taught to cook at an early age by her mother standing on a pail to reach the counter. Her first dish was cornbread. She still now loves cooking and her recipes have broadened. Her cornbread dressing and peach cobbler is still in awe at the family gatherings. Her favorite food is Fried Catfish and Sweet Potato Pie. Annie is currently a member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas, TX. Political affiliations date back to the New Deal era and continue to be Pro-Democratic for the entire family. Her hobbies include reading, especially the Bible and any other literature; and playing dominoes. Annie was very proud to see Barack (214) 514-9553 or Obama become the First African American President and she enjoys watching Tyler Perry’s Madea movies.
