METRO Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport New Parking Plazas that (Re) Define Your Trip
Upon exiting, credit/debit card customers can take the ticket to any lane. Lanes marked credit card or TollTag will provide the fastest transaction. Cash customers will simply use the left lanes marked “Cash” to complete their transaction. Only exiting cash lanes will have a customer service representative while all other lanes will be fully automated and self-serve. Simple, easy and efficient!
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport will soon introduce its new parking control plazas on August 26th. Your new plaza experience will come with self-service lanes, discounts for TollTag users and an all-around faster experience at the Airport. “We are taking an important step to improve the customer experience by adding more lanes and reducing wait times to enter and exit the Airport,” said Jeff Fegan, CEO of DFW Airport. “The new Parking Control System will allow many more lanes to operate because they are automated, and that will mean a better experience for a great majority of our customers.” This new process will automate your trip to and from DFW Airport, especially for NTTA TollTag customers. For the fastest transaction, all you have to do is log on to your NTTA account online and opt in for DFW; you won’t have to pull a ticket when you enter the airport. This is especially helpful for those who like a shortcut when driving to a Rangers game! TollTag saves you time and money on your DFW Airport plaza transaction!
DFW is right there with you. Guests who choose to use a North Texas Toll Authority (NTTA) TollTag will enjoy a faster experience and will save $2 per day on terminal parking and $1 when passing through the Airport. No TollTag? No problem! Drivers can secure a TollTag from a variety of retail establishments in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. For a complete list, visit the NTTA website. Or, you can still use a credit/ debit card or cash for your transaction. DFW makes it easy. Just pull a ticket from the self-service, automated system as you enter. Push a button, pull your ticket and you’re in!
DFW will be removing a piece of its history to keep up with the times. Built in 1973, the parking plazas have run every single day for almost 40 years. The legacy parking control plazas will come down over the next several months with overnight construction.
Parkland physician warns athletes to know signs of heat illness Practice common sense when preparing for the season DALLAS – Young athletes practicing in hot weather are at risk for heat illness, and it can happen outside or inside a hot gym. Therefore, physicians with Parkland Health & Hospital System warn athletes, coaches and parents to know how hot is too hot. Knowing the temperature and humidity is important. Watch the heat index, which measures how hot it really feels when humidity is combined with air temperature. The combination of heat and humidity can be dangerous. “Even practicing during the early morning or late evening can lead to severe heat stress,” said Alexander Eastman, MD, interim trauma medical director at Parkland and the lead medical officer for the Dallas Police Department SWAT team. “Even in finely tuned, athletic SWAT officers, heat injuries can occur without much warning. It’s important that everything be taken into consideration before, and especially during, any type of practice regardless if there is physical contact or not.” In 2012, 28 patients were treated at Parkland for heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Of those, 10 had to be hospitalized. Since January, eight patients have been treated in Parkland’s Emergency Department with a heatrelated diagnosis. Of those, two required hospitalization. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that outdoor activities should be scheduled carefully. Even if outdoor activity is limited to morning and evening hours, athletes are advised to try to rest often in shady areas so that the body’s thermostat will have a chance to recover. In addition, athletes should pace themselves. If they are not accustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment, start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. If exertion in the heat

makes an individual’s heart pound and leaves them gasping for breath, stop all activity. Get in a cool area or at least into the shade, and rest, especially if they are lightheaded, confused, weak or faint. “One of the most important things people can do is have a buddy system,” Dr. Eastman said. “When practicing in the heat, monitor your teammates and have someone do the same for you. And, above all, practice common sense and know the warning signs.” Dr. Eastman said watch for signs and symptoms like: • Feeling tired or weak • Nausea and vomiting • Headache or muscle cramps • Dizziness or disorientation • Sweat-soaked pale skin • Loss of consciousness Teams and schools should have a plan to help athletes slowly get used to practicing in hot weather. Kids are most at risk for heat illness during the first days of practice. They should wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Regularly drink plenty of water and never limit the amount kids may drink during games or practice. “And athletes never should practice or play if they’re sick, especially with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea,” Dr. Eastman warned. “If an athlete has a medical condition, like asthma, or is taking medication, tell the coach. Coaches should know each athlete’s physical condition because it can increase the risk for heat illness.” Heat stroke is the top cause of preventable death in high school athletes, according to the CDC. If you think a young athlete has heat illness, quickly get medical assistance or call 911.

all vestiges of discrimination against the exercise of the franchise by minority citizens, she said. “Jurisdictions covered by the preclearance requirement continued to submit, in large numbers, proposed changes to voting laws that the Attorney General declined to approve, auguring that barriers to minority voting would quickly resurface were the preclearance remedy eliminated. Ginsburg noted, “After considering the full legislative record, Congress made the following findings: The VRA has directly caused significant progress in eliminating firstgeneration barriers to ballot access, leading to a marked increase in minority voter registration and turnout and the number of minority elected officials. But despite this progress, “second generation barriers constructed to prevent minority voters from fully participating in the electoral process continued to exist, as well as racially polarized voting in the covered jurisdictions, which increased the political vulnerability of racial and language minorities in those jurisdictions. She noted that Congress, not the judiciary, should have the final say on voting matters. “The Constitution uses the words ‘right to vote’ in five separate places: the Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Nineteenth, TwentyFourth, and Twenty-Sixth Amendments. Each of these Amendments contains the same broad empowerment of Congress to enact ‘appropriate legislation’ to enforce the protected right. The implication is unmistakable: Under our constitutional structure, Congress holds the lead rein in making the right to vote equally real for all U. S. citizens. These Amendments are in line with the special role assigned to Congress in protecting the integrity of the democratic process in federal elections. That’s language that would make Thurgood Marshall proud. MALVEAUX: WHAT IS A LIVING WAGE?
THE LAST WORD by Dr. Julianne Malveaux
Last week workers at fast food restaurants demonstrated outside their places of work, highlighting the low wages they receive and demanding more. They say twice as much, or $15 an hour, will provide them with a living wage. In Washington, DC, the City Council has sent legislation to Mayor Vincent Gray, requiring “big box stores like Wal-Mart and Best Buy to pay $12.50, more than the DC minimum wage of $8.25 an hour. In response, Wal-Mart says it may not build all of the six stores they have slated for DC. Responses depend on who you talk to, with some of the unemployed saying that an $8.25 job is better than no job, and with others saying that $8.25 is not a living wage. Someone who earns $8.25 an hour (which is a dollar more an hour than the federal minimum wage) earns $17,160 per year if they work full time (40 hours) all year (52 weeks). Although taxes for the low income are low, they are still deducted, especially the Social Security tax (about 7 percent). Too many minimum workers don’t work full-time, full-year. Many have their hours cut so that companies can avoid paying benefits. This means full time, full year work is the best-case scenario. For many, it can be much worse. The poverty line for one adult and two children is $19,530, which puts the $8.25 worker below the poverty line. The parent who earns this scant wage struggles to make ends meet, and often cannot. Too often, thisYour Exposure parent has to While We Have choose between transportation Your Audience’s and shoes

for their children, between children’s books and food. A two-parent family has a higher poverty threshold of $23,550, about 20 percent more than the minimum wage worker earns. Federal and state supplements often make the difference between swimming and sinking. Many families who live below the poverty line use supplemental nutrition programs (that used to be called food stamps) to enhance their food budget. Congress is in the process of cutting SNAP so low that 5 million of the roughly 47 million people on the program will be cut. Some receive medical assistance through Medicaid. Some cities subsidize summer programs or other efforts, offering day care possibilities for those who struggle to afford it. According to the Economic Policy Institute, the average cost of childcare in the District of Columbia is $1300 a month, or $13,600 a year. Poverty line $23,550, childcare costs $13,600 per year. Go figure. In other parts of the country, full time, full year workers earn less than DC workers. Those who earn the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour earn $15,160 per year, less than the poverty line for one parent and one child. Those who earn $12.50 per hour, the proposed wage for DC big box stores, will earn $26,000 a year. The $15 an hour that some fast food workers suggest would push their wages to $31,200 a year. Some feel these low wages are acceptable, especially some Tea Party members of Congress, yet they earn at

Already we are seeing evidence of the administration’s plan to dig our country out of recession and develop long-term, sustainable prosperity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to repair our frayed alliances and restore our international leadership. Finally, the Obama administration’s code of ethics has brought much-needed transparency and accountability to the White House. President Obama is delivering on the change that he promised.

least $174,000 per year. Actually if fast food workers were as productive as this Congress (which has produced little of nothing so far this year), they wouldn’t earn a penny. Yet those who are well paid and well supported show little empathy for those whose lives and work are daily struggles. The issue of unemployment must be taken into account when we look at the matter of poverty lines and minimum wages. With an overall unemployment rate of well above 7 percent (unless a miracle occurs on August 2, after this column is filed), and a black unemployment rate of more than 13 percent, too many households with two adults have only one earner in the household. Another concern is that the federal poverty line is published as a national rate, yet it’s much cheaper to live, for example, in rural Mississippi than it does in New York City. In many instances, the poverty line does not reflect differences in housing costs, health care costs, or even transportation costs. The Economic Policy Institute (epi.org) has developed budgets for “adequate living in certain cities. (Full disclosure – I sit on the organization’s board). This tool shows the wide variety of realistic and adequate living costs, which range from more than $90,000 in New York City, to around $40,000 in parts of Mississippi. These are adequate living standards, not extravagant ones, taking into account rent, transportation, and other costs. Many quibble about the level of the minimum wage, but the more relevant issue is the living wage. Millions are pushed below the poverty line because too many employers do not take the cost of living into consideration when the set wage levels. Paying workers less than they are worth drains our economy because these workers will not be spenders or “economic expanders

AUGUST 15, 2013
In just one week, I will join thousands of Americans in our nation's capital to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. As I think about all of us standing there to commemorate the day that Whitney M. Young, Jr., A. Phillip Randolph and so many other civil rights legends came together for "jobs and freedom" and where Dr. King delivered his Marc H. Morial historic "I have a President and Chief dream" speech, I Executive Officer want to remind you National Urban League to share your story: How are you redeeming the dream of equality in your life? Building on the incredible momentum generated by this year's Redeem the Dream conference in Philadelphia, the march next Saturday promises to be a moving and powerful event. It's a chance to not only celebrate how far we've come in the fight for equality, but to share our dreams for the future – as individuals and as a nation. One lucky Redeem the Dream contributor will win a free night's stay at a hotel in Washington, DC, next weekend. Please tell your friends and family about this exciting campaign and encourage them to share their dreams for a chance to win. We hope you will join us on the march, but if you can't be there in person, I would be honored to carry your dreams and stories with me to Washington. Your voice has the power to make a difference and create lasting change. And the more voices we have behind us, the stronger the fight for freedom and opportunity for all Americans. Because your dream matters.

estimated 310 million non-military firearms owned in America.
This follows the recent movie theater attack in Aurora, Colorado and multiple college campus and high school shootings over the past years.
It’s time to take action. None of us is safe in a nation where assault weapons are readily available. We need to revive the ban on assault weapons now.
And daily in major cities like Chicago, the trauma builds.
Sign the petition to Congress to renew the ban on assault weapons NOW!

TV One to premiere acclaimed Harry MegaFest Belafonte documentary “sing your song” continued from front page
SUNDAY, AUGUST 25 AT 11 AM ET Airdate Marks Documentary’s Basic Cable Network Debut SILVER SPRING, MD — To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, TV One will air Sing Your Song, the criticallyacclaimed documentary profiling revered African American singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, on Sunday, August 25 at 11 am ET. This marks the basic cable network premiere of the 2011 documentary, which charts Belafonte’s life as a rising black Hollywood star amid the social and political racism plaguing 1960s America, and his emergence as a figurehead of the civil rights movement. “As one of the most celebrated entertainers of the era, Harry Belafonte’s unrelenting support of the 1960s civil rights movement helped to spotlight and give voice
to the hardships and prejudices faced by millions of Americans,” said Maureen Guthman, SVP of Program Strategy and Acquisitions for TV One. “We are delighted to bring his story to the wider basic cable audience—both those who were raised on his songs and films, and younger viewers who can absorb the documentary and appreciate Belafonte’s legacy in conjunction with the March on Washington anniversary.” Despite his fame and success as
Hollywood’s “King of Calypso,” Belafonte was confronted with the same Jim Crow laws and prejudices that every other black man, woman and child in 1960s America faced.
The film documents his resistance to those obstacles, and his transformation into a champion for human rights worldwide–making him one of the truly heroic cultural and political figures of the last 60 years. In addition to Belafonte, Sing Your Song features interviews with Belafonte’s family and notable names such as Tony Bennett, Diahann Carroll, Ruby Dee, Whoopi Goldberg, Quincy Jones, Coretta Scott King, Rep. John Lewis, Miriam Makeba, Nelson Mandela and Sidney Poitier, among many others. Produced by Belafonte Enterprises and S2BN Entertainment Production in association with Julius R. Nasso Productions, Sing Your Song has been presented at numerous film festivals worldwide and has received award honors including Most Popular Film at the 2011 Vancouver International Film Festival, a 2012 NAMIC Vision Award (Documentary) and a 2012 NAACP Image Award (Outstanding Documentary). The film aired on premium cable network HBO in October 2011.

Evaluating President Obama’s First 100 Days Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news media and intellectuals around the country have given their grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100 days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several people from the local front graded the new president.

“I am deeply impressed with the progress that President Barack Obama has made during the first 100 days of his administration.

The administration has proposed trillions of dollars in new spending, which will result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am very concerned about the President’s intention to close Guantanamo without a workable plan to relocate detainees. It is my sincere hope that, moving forward, the administration will adopt the productive, responsible approach to our nation’s challenges that Americans deserve.â€? PROPOSITIONS 1 AND 2 Why YES means no and NO means yes Dallas is abuzz at the election issues before them on May 9 when citizens are asked to vote on the controverD’LYTE sial & EBONY Convention Music Happenings Center Hotel that is being backed by Mayor Leppert. But what does voting “noâ€? and voting “yesâ€? mean? It is important to remember that the propositions are to amend the Dallas City Charter which, among other things, gives the MISSpower RAY to acquire city the Going Deep in Roots property fortheany public purpose. The propositions are worded to prohibit the city from acting on these before stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen would like the city to maintain those powers, they are to vote NO and vice versa. ‘Married to Commitment’ reinforced ‘humility, patience’ in me By Donald Lee
I was just reflecting on an interview I did with my former employer (The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge) about the future bestselling book my friend and prayer partner Bre Eaton and I released a couple of years ago. In that interview, columnist and pal Terry Robinson asked me an awesome question. He asked me whether our book, “Married to Commitment,”
ministered to me in any way. And if so, what was the one thing that I learned from the book. My response: "More humility and patience." The book is about being humble, recognizing that it is God who gives promotions (whether in the workplace or in relationships). And it's about being patient. Many divorces occur or many marriages are strained because of a lack of patience on the part of at least one of the two persons. We, generally speaking, get tired of waiting on God to send us our Ruth or our Esther or our Boaz or our Isaac, to the point where we succumb to the pressures of impatience (like Abraham and Sarah did) and we (not God) produce Ishmaels in our lives rather than waiting on God to present us our Isaacs. Some of the biggest, most recognized, most influential pastors out there today often say: "Most divorces occur over money." I've always contended that “money” was not (and perhaps never was) the reason for so many failed marriages. I contend that those marriages fail because of “selfishness,” “selfcenteredness,” “pride.” This — a selfish, haughty spirit — is the root
cause of divorce. The money factor, I argue, is the fruit of the divorce. But the root of the divorce is the selfcenteredness factor. In other words, money, if you will, is (how can I say it?) “the straw that broke the camel's back.” That one straw, alone, couldn't do it. But it's placed on top of all the other stuff. Successful, new marriages or relationships are birthed from honest, self-evaluations concerning what went wrong in previous ones. Donald Lee is founder-pastor of nondenominational, multi-ethnic Kingdom Living Christian Center in Dallas. He co-authors “Married to Commitment,” (Xulon Press, $14.99) a book on relationships. To attain your copy of the book, visit http://www.xulonpress.com or call toll-free (866) 909-2665. Lee can be contacted at pastordonjlee@yahoo. com or (225) 773-2248. Follow him on http://www.twitter.com at @donaldj_ lee. To hear his sermons “live,” call (218) 862-4590 (conference code: 279498#) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (Central Standard Time) on Sundays. Intercessory prayer is from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Ask Gwen
Dear Gwendolyn: I have been going with a man for 16 years. We have been engaged for the past two years this month. We have no children. This is my problem: He recently told me that my cousin’s 10 year old son is his. I cried and insisted on a DNA test. Guess what? It’s true. He told me that he has been going with my cousin for the past 11 years all the time he was involved with me. Oh by the way, we have lived together for the past 15 years. Yes, it took 14 years for him to propose marriage. I have been happy with him. I have worked the entire time in a high paying career. Because of the recent discovery should I give him up? Doris

Let me tell you this: Time moves rapidly and does not stand still for anyone. I want you to search the laws for your state regarding ‘common law’ marriage. However, if your fiancĂŠ has nothing then sorry lady, you will get nothing. I congratulate you for having a good career. At least you have not been a kept woman. If you leave him, you can financially survive and believe me, you do need to leave him. Do not focus on the years gone by. Focus now on going forward with your life finding happiness within yourself. I know to understand your cousin’s affair with your man is hurtful. But maybe she and your fiancĂŠ are compatible - you know...having a lack of principles. Not only will you need to part from your fiancĂŠ, but also put distance between you and your cousin. Sometimes with family you have to step back, go around, go under, or go over the bridge of unfaithfulness and wrongdoings. Doris, let me tell you something else: You asked if you should give him up. Think about it. It seems you never had him --- to begin with. Gwen

At the time of his death on July 27, 2013, he was attending an annual fundraiser in Lousisiana for his charity, “Kidd’s Kids.” Kidd Kraddick decided on his career while serving as 10th grade class president. “We sponsored a big dance for the seniors but didn’t have enough money to hire a DJ. So I snuck out my dad’s stereo and did it myself.” From then on, he was hooked. After stints as a nighttime teen idol in Miami, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and Tampa (where he was given the name “Kidd” by a program director), Kraddick took his show to Dallas, where he quickly made the transition to morning drive. In 2001, the show was syndicated and is now heard in nearly 100 cities across the country and worldwide on AFN (American Forces Radio).
