Fight stress with healthy habits Healthy habits can protect you from the harmful effects of stress. Here are 10 positive healthy habits you may want to develop. 1. Talk with family and friends. A daily dose of friendship is great medicine. Call or write your friends and family to share your feelings, hopes and joys. 2. Engage in daily physical activity. Regular physical activity relieves mental and physical tension. Physically active adults have lower risk of depression and loss of mental functioning. Physical activity can be a great source of pleasure, too. Try walking, swimming, biking or dancing every day. 3. Accept the things you cannot change. Don’t say, “I’m too old.” You can still learn new things, work toward a goal, love and help others. 4. Remember to laugh. Laughter makes you feel good. Don’t be afraid to laugh out loud at a joke, a funny movie or a comic strip, even when you’re alone. 5. Give up the bad habits. Too much alcohol, cigarettes or caffeine can increase stress. If you smoke, decide to quit now.

6. Slow down. Try to “pace” instead of “race.” Plan ahead and allow enough time to get the most important things done. 7. Get enough sleep. Try to get six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you can’t sleep, take steps to help reduce stress and depression. Physical activity also may improve the quality of sleep. 8. Get organized. Use “to do” lists to help you focus on your most important tasks. Approach big tasks one step at a time. For example, start by organizing just one part of your life — your car, desk, kitchen, closet, cupboard or drawer. 9. Practice giving back. Volunteer your time or return a favor to a friend. Helping others helps you. 10. Try not to worry. The world won’t end if your grass isn’t mowed or your kitchen isn’t cleaned. Exercise, diet may help lower cholesterol

So your lab tests revealed the bad news: high cholesterol. If your total cholesterol has soared past 200 and you have a family history of heart or vascular disease, your doctor may recommend a cholesterol-lowering drug such as a statin and lifestyle changes to maintain a healthy heart. But if you want to take steps on your own, some simple diet changes and exercise may help you manage your cholesterol levels. Adopt a program that includes aerobic exercise to elevate your heart rate, improve circulation, burn calories and trim fat. Nutritionists say that what you eat — or don’t — also can significantly lower levels of low-density lipoprotein or “bad” LDL cholesterol. Avoid or limit foods packed with saturated fats, such as red meat or full-fat dairy products. And mix in foods — such as oats, almonds and walnuts — that are proven to trim bad cholesterol levels. Limiting saturated fats and consuming good foods can lower cholesterol 8 to 10 percent. That may be enough for many to get out of the danger zone.

• Eat foods that are rich in soluble fiber, such as oatmeal. When oatmeal is mixed with water, it takes on a gel-like texture that acts as a sponge as it moves through your intestines. The digested oatmeal sops up bad cholesterol and removes it along with bile from the body, instead of sending it back to the liver, where it can elevate cholesterol to dangerous levels. • Consume nuts such as almonds and walnuts, which are chock full of plant sterols. The chemical structure of these sterols is very similar to cholesterol and blocks the absorption of cholesterol within the body. Although these nuts can help lower cholesterol, they are high in calories. A handful of nuts each day should be enough. • If you don’t want to overdose on nuts, some food products, such as orange juice and some types of margarine, are manufactured with plant sterol additives. • A popular heart-healthy food for those looking to lower cholesterol is fatty fish with omega-3 fatty acids. 1 in 8 adults may have sensitive teeth If you sometimes get a jolt of pain in your mouth when you drink or eat something hot or cold, you’re not alone: A survey of U.S. dental offices finds that one in eight people has over-sensitive teeth. Sensitive teeth were most common in young adults, women and people who had receding gums or did at-home tooth whitening. “The condition is impacting people’s lives, and they may avoid some foods,” said Dr. Joana Cunha-Cruz, a research assistant professor at the University of Washington and lead study author. Cold, hot, sweet and acidic foods and drinks often trigger the pain. “But it’s not like they are feeling pain all the time,” Cunha-Cruz added. Teeth might be sensitive for a few weeks and then fine for a few weeks. Sensitive teeth often occurs when enamel on the outside of the tooth, or the tissue between the tooth and gum called cementum, wears away, exposing small tubes that connect nerves inside the tooth to triggers outside of the tooth, Cunha-Cruz said. Another dental expert talked about vulnerability to the condition. “Teeth sensitivity is universal, but some people and cultures could be more at risk depending on their diet, if it is very acidic, and if they drink a lot of wine or alcohol,” said Dr. Richard Trushkowsky, associate

Trushkowsky recommends that “brushing with a soft brush and not using it horizontally, like a weed whacker,” could help reduce your risk of developing sensitive teeth. In addition, drinking water immediately after having acidic food or drink, such as fruit, orange juice, wine or coffee, and avoiding brushing for 10 or 15 minutes could help prevent sensitive teeth, Trushkowsky said. Wearing a mouth guard at night if you grind your teeth could also help prevent wearing down the enamel that can lead to sensitive teeth, Trushkowsky suggested. Rothen said sensitive teeth is a “significant problem because it is difficult to treat and we do not have a good treatment for it.” Over-the-counter toothpastes for sensitive teeth, such as Sensodyne and Colgate’s Sensitive Pro-Relief, can sometimes help treat the condition, Trushkowsky said. If patients do not get relief from special toothpastes, more invasive treatments include fillings, a bonding agent to seal the tooth, or grafting new gum tissue in the case of receding gums, he said. Dr. Steven Lamm, internist and author of “No Guts, No Glory” says patients don’t always communicate all their symptoms to a doctor even when those symptoms may have a negative impact on their lives. • More exercise, less stress: Increased exercise and stress reduction have been shown to help relieve symptoms. Relaxation techniques may help in stressful situations, and increasing exercise like walking and yoga may also help. It could be osteoporosis Not all broken bones are just an “accident.” If slips, trips or falls lead to a bone fracture, it could be a symptom of something much more serious: osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones. If left untreated, over time, the situation could get worse, potentially leading to more fractures, chronic pain, or even disability or early death. Worldwide, one in two women and one in five men over age 50 will suffer a fragility fracture, and in the United States, 2 million broken bones occur annually (5,500 every day) due to osteoporosis -- as people with osteoporosis may experience a fracture even from slight bumps or a fall from standing height in the course of daily activities. Here are steps you can take to become your own advocate when it comes to long-term bone health: • Osteoporosis is often referred to as a “silent disease” because it has no signs or symptoms until a fracture occurs.
