How did you get into photography, what were your early influences? My first acquaintance to photography began in the second half of the. Then it was film/analogue photography. My parents presented me a cheap camera as a birthday gift. I was fascinated by the technical process from shooting until the emergence of the image on the photographic paper. But it was only a hobby in the childhood. How would you describe your photographic style and how it has developed over the years? With the advent of digital, professional cameras I was fond of photography again. At the same time I developed the art style. I studied pictures of artists of the Renaissance. It were such great artists like Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Antoon van Dyck, Jan Vermeer van Delft, Pieter Paul Rubens, Raffaello Santi, Jan van Eyck. So I studied the different rules for creation of images. These were rules about the plane and space, balance, symmetry, harmony in the image. On the basis of this knowledge my author’s style was created. What led you to start shooting portraits? Is it your only photographic genre? The interest in psychology became one more factor which finally defined my style photography. I like to open the identity of people. Even more I like to show the female beauty, elegance and grace. Therefore except portraits I do works in the style of artistic nude photography. When you show up for a shoot do you feel like you come with a clear idea of what you’re going for? What do you consider a successful portrait? Knowledge of psychology allows me to understand the identity of the person. I came to a the conclusion that it is impossible to force a model to express a specific look, it mostly looks unnatural then. If there is a certain idea, the photographer has to pick up the necessary model for a successful realization of this idea.

A combination of these factors allow to make a successful portrait... What is most challenging about shooting portraits? ...Lack of these a.m. factors can make the creation of portraits difficult. Creative dialogue with the model on the basis of mutual understanding in the course of shooting is very important. When such dialogue is present, the process of shooting becomes a positive dynamic. Such work brings satisfaction to the whole team on the set. What is the elegance for you? The result of the shooting should be characterized by noble simplicity, tranquillity, absence of slackness, presence of severity and smoothness in a portrait. For me this is an elegance measure. What do you most love about photography? I most of all love the whole process of shooting. It is similar to magic!

Havana IMPROMPTU BY JOHANNES BARTHELMES From my very first visit, I had fallen in love with the country of Cuba and its remarkable people. The city of Havana stimulates one's artistic senses, leaving no other possibility than for an artist to be creative. My approach to photography requires intimacy and trust. I want to be welcomed into my subjects' lives. I have learned Spanish so that I can engage in personal communication to better understand the daily lives of people. There are many days when I do not take a single photo; putting the camera away allows me to become much closer with these extraordinary people. From my experience in Cuba, I now find it troubling to see the limitless consumption we, in the so called advanced countries of the world, engage in. I have learned a lot from the people of Cuba. 134 PENTAPRISM

On the streets of Havana I met a lady with a guitar. We connected immediately. A few days later I was invited to her home for coffee where I had the privilege to get to know her 103-year-old mother. That day, I learned a lot about the history of Cuba, and before I parted, the ex-music teacher took her guitar and played ‘Besame Mucho’ while the 103 year old mother sang with tears in her eyes--an experience I will never forget.

El zapatero - ‘The shoemaker’. While sitting there all day long, he knows exactly what is happening on his street. One day he welcomed me into his home and showed me his Santeria utensils. Santeria is a widespread religion in Cuba which combines African gods with Catholic saints, a very interesting, very exotic, and very mysterious religion.

A young mother taking her smoking break. There is always wonderful Cuban music playing somewhere in the background while I drink my delightful Cuban espresso. My camera, of course, is always ready to shoot.
At the Malecon of Havana a lot of musicians with different instruments are playing and practising all day long. Some of them are looking for tourists to earn some money, some of them forget the world around. This amazing playing lady was waiting for her colleagues to take her to a concert by car. Musicians all over the world don’t lose time, if they are with their instrument, they are playing.

During my daily long walks, I will often stop at the home of a Cuban friend and am always offered what I find to be the very best coffee in the world, a Cuban espresso. The Cuban people are very hospitable. Many an evening I have spent sharing a wonderful dinner at the home of one of my Cuban friends.

Cubans are extraordinary chess-players. Waiting for the next customer, these bike-taxi-drivers are using the break for a match.
The promise
For the feast of San Lazaro, a religious pilgrimage which the Cubans celebrate on Dec 17th, in the town of Rincon, this man made a vow on behalf of his sick daughter, a commitment to his Santeria-Saint. He has vowed to make a very difficult 20-day journey, traveling 25 miles by laying low to the ground and moving on all fours as you see him in the photo. He struggles 12 hours or more per day while in dangerous proximity to heavy traffic, precariously inching his way towards Rincon...
It is absolutely fascinating to me, that with simple means and inventive wealth, one finds way to solve their problems. With two buckets (or large tomato cans), concrete, and an iron rod, one now has a barbell.

On almost every street in Havana, you will find a small, improvised boxing gym where the older, well-seasoned boxers are instructing the young. The Cubans are very proud of their boxing heritage.

With the help of a very good friend, who himself was a boxing gold medalist at the 1980 Olympic Games, I got opportunity to visit and work in an incredible boxing stadium known as "Kid Chocolate". It was personally an extraordinary experience. At times I found it scary to be so close to these incredibly powerful and fast athletes who trained there; in fact, I was so close that I could actually hear their fists flying.

This photograph was also taken in the "Kid Chocolate" boxing stadium. There was incredible tranquility and concentration minutes before the fight.

A moment of consolation and encouragement are given to a young boxer; the coach explains to the disappointed boxer what to do better next time.
