Thali is the oldest of three sisters and gets lots of opportunity to live out her life motto “have courage and be kind”.

Christi is a bookworm and the second oldest of three brothers. He is a young man of many talents and has been the lead in his school play and the goal-keeper for his hockey team.

She is a busy body that enjoys school, especially Maths and Dance. When it comes to cooking, Thali and her family love to braai and she often takes control from her dad. She also enjoys watching the sun set at the end of a beautiful day. She is joined in the Kokkedoortjie studio by her mom Aletha.

Christi aspires to one day become a world renowned chef like his culinary hero Heston Blumenthal.

Christian loves reading books such as Popular Mechanics and the Guinness Book of World Records and is always eager to learn something new. In the Kitchen he enjoys cooking with his mom, Martmarie, who joins him in the Kokkedoortjie studio. He is at his happiest when he is making pasta from scratch and dreams of cooking like his culinary role model Jamie Oliver one day.

He is joined in the Kokkedoortjie studio by his mom Brenda.

Dean’s favourite place to hangout is the “man-cave” at his house. This is where he cooks and where his family spends most of their time.

Klaredy adores cupcakes - eating and making them of course.

When in the kitchen, Mia tries to never make the same mistake twice. She is joined in the Kokkedoortjie studio by her mom Karen.

When he isn’t in the kitchen cooking up a storm he enjoys gardening and spending time in his own vegetable garden. He also has a passion for collecting antique cameras, one of which dates back to 1859. Dean’s cooking skills are thanks to his grandmother and he is joined in the Kokkedoortjie studio by his father Jean.

Her love for food comes from her father, but it is her mother, Heleen, who joins her in the Kokkedoortjie studio. When Klaredy isn’t baking, she enjoys loud music, shopping for beautiful clothing and shoes, playing hockey and drawing.

Vanilla Cupcakes

PURE! SPICY! DELICATE! Vanilla Cupcakes 125g butter, softened 125g castor sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla essence 1 k (140g) self-raising flour 2 Tbsp (30 ml) milk Preheat the oven to 180 C. Line a muffin pan with 12 paper cups. In the bowl of an electric mixer beat together the butter and sugar until pale in colour. Add the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla. Mix well. Spoon the batter equally into the paper cups and bake for 16-18 minutes. Leave to cool in the pan. Once cool, pipe your icing of choice onto the cupcakes.

Edwin Theron Age: 11 Town: Worcester Edwin is the man of the house and has been cooking for him and his sister from a young age. His hobbies include wrestling, browsing YouTube and listening to rap and rock music. In the kitchen he is known for his spicy sauces. His mom Marietjie joins him in the Kokkedoortjie studio.

Meet the Judges of Kokkedoortjie! Meet Nic van Wyk!

Meet Mari-Louis Guy

A familiar face on the judging panel of kykNET’s Kokkedoor, Nic is back on screens to judge and mentor the mini chefs on Kokkedoortjie.

Well-known for her guest appearance on kykNET’s Kokkedoor and judge on koekedoor, Mari-Louis plays mother hen to our Kokkedoortjies.

Known for his bold flavours, Nic started his culinary career at La Colombe under the guidance of Chef Franck Dangereux. He then went on to open Terroir in 2004, which won the Eat Out Best Restaurant Award in 2006. He currently heads up the kitchen at Haute Cabriere wine farm in Franschhoek with partner Chef Westley Muller.

Mother of three and renowned South African cookbook author and foodstylist, Mari-Louis, together with her brother Callie Maritz, has written eight cookbooks including the popular title “Cakes to celebrate love and life”. She co-owns Cakebread with her sibling where they, in addition to recipe and product development, work with cameras and play with food to create masterpieces for all forms of media and advertising.

125 g butter, softened 1 ½ cups (210g) icing sugar, sifted 2 Tbsp (30ml) milk 1 tsp (5ml) vanilla essence Food colouring of choice

In the bowl of an electric mixer, with a paddle attachment, beat the butter until pale in colour and creamy. Add the icing sugar and half of the milk. Mix well, then add the vanilla essence and food colouring (to the desired shade). If the mixture is too firm, add the rest of the milk and beat until it reaches your desire consistency.

Meringue Icing 4 egg whites, at room temperature 1 cup (200 g) sugar A pinch salt A drop of food colouring of choice In the heatproof bowl of an electric mixer, combine the egg whites, sugar and salt. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering water and handwhisk continuously for 3-5 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is hot to the touch. Attach the bowl to the electric mixer with the whisk attachment, and beat on low for 2 minutes. Add a drop of food colouring, then beat on high for a further 5 minutes until mixture has cooled down and stiff peaks form. Use immediately.
