hose who have never visited Bangkok may find it quite daunting. Between the heat, the unusual smells and the masses of people, Bangkok is a city like no other. Traffic in Bangkok is a nightmare, which is why we have selected a few of our favourite hotels that are centrally located to give you access to good public transport. We recommend using the Bangkok MRT or the BTS (SkyTrain). Ask your agent for more information.

3-star NARAI HOTEL

#2 BEST VIEW Why not check out Sirocco? Hyped as the world’s highest al-fresco restaurant, it’s also home to one of the city’s trendiest bars, Skybar (famous for featuring as a location in The Hangover). Beware as drinks can be pricey!

LOCATION Vibey location, just a short walk from the buzzing nightlife capital of Patpong with its clubs, bars and night market. Narai Hotel is within easy walking distance of the MRT Silom Station and BTS Chong Nonsi Station. If you’re keen on nightlife this is the hotel for you! DESCRIPTION

#1 ATTRACTIONS Head to Bangkok’s Old City to see some of its most renowned temples, such as The Golden Mount, Wat Suthat and Wat Ratchanaddaram. Located within walking distance of each other, you’ll be able to see the majestic Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand, and Wat Pho, home to the world’s largest reclining Buddha image.

ABOVE» SIROCCO’S FAMOUS SKYBAR VIEW OF THE CITY OF BANGKOK

Bangkok has many transport options however we find the simplest to be the BTS or MRT to access key sites in Bangkok. Traffic is horrendous and metred taxis and tuk-tuks can be expensive, especially if they are hailed right outside the hotel.

Take the ferry across the Chao Phraya River to Thonburi to see Wat Arun, one of Thailand’s most beautiful temples and today one of the nation’s most recognisable icons; it’s even engraved on all 10 baht coins. Of course no visit to Bangkok would be complete without a visit to Patpong, the city’s main entertainment district and renowned for being its red light district. Visitors will find a myriad of late-night strip clubs, bars and restaurants, as well as a busy night market.

This hotel is popular with large groups. Although the hotel is over 40 years old, it is refurbished continuously, it reflects more of a European flavour than its counterparts in the same star category. The hotel has some shops underneath it, including Thai silk stores as well as a Tour East desk in the lobby providing details and booking facilities for transfers and tours. The hotel’s buffet breakfasts and lunches are legendary with an extensive variety of food on offer. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. ROOMS The Narai has over 400 rooms, the entry level one being the 28 sqm Superior rooms with queen or twin beds, flat screen TV and bathroom with shower [you can request a bath if needed]. The Deluxe rooms are located on the higher floors and have bigger bathrooms with a bath and shower, and wooden flooring.

LOCATION A shopper’s paradise, the Lit Hotel is located just across from the National Stadium, which happens to be one of the stops on the BTS Silom Line, and is within five minutes’ walk from the massive MBK mall. DESCRIPTION It has modern, quirky décor and features two restaurants, a fitness centre and spa, a great breakfast buffet and a lovely infinity pool with bar area. ROOMS There are only 79 rooms in this boutiquestyle property and these are surprising in size. The Star Radiance is a funky 32 sqm room with separate shower and toilet, desk area & flat screen TV. Guests can even change the mood lighting in their bathroom. The Different Degree rooms have a more private bathroom shaped along the edge of the room. The Full Spectrum room features a long seating and desk area, glass shower capsule and a separate bath.

#3 SHOPPING GALORE It’s one of the world’s largest weekend markets with some 8 000 market stalls stretching over 35 acres. Chatuchak Weekend Market, adjacent to Kamphaengpecth Station (MRT), may be overwhelming at first glance because of the sheer array of goods for sale, from clothing to handicrafts, art and even food, but there is a system of sections that is designed to help shoppers navigate it logically.

#4 GETTING AROUND

5-star AMARI WATERGATE

Your jaw will drop when you see Bangkok’s traffic. No matter the time of day or day of the week, the traffic in Thailand’s capital is awful. Taxi drivers often hesitate accepting the trip if it is distances they deem to be too far or inconvenient, and may overcharge you.

GLANCE

Although there is an absolute mass of taxi services available, if you can avoid travelling by car and use the Skytrain (BTS) and underground (MRT) services, you should do so. Both of these services are fairly easy to navigate and connect the main shopping, entertainment and business areas of the city. There are two BTS lines – the light green Sukhumvit Line taking you to the main shopping district Siam Square, and dark green Silom line that ends at the National Stadium, alongside the huge MBK shopping area.

Your jaw will drop when you see Bangkok’s traffic. There are certain tuk-tuks that can sometimes be even more expensive than a taxi. Be warned, these tuk-tuk drivers sometimes have deals with shops like tailors and jewellery stores, where they receive commissions for dropping off tourists. You may find yourself forced to shop en-route to your final destination.

RECOMMENDED FOR COUPLES ABOVE » TAKE A DIP IN THE SKY AT THE AMARI HOTEL’S ROOFTOP POOL

LOCATION Great location on a main road within walking distance of the Siam shopping district. In fact, it’s just across the road from Platinum Mall and Pantip Plaza and just a short walk to Central World and Siam Paragon. Travellers can simply walk from mall to mall on the sky-walks. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi throughout and has great public facilities including an excellent fitness area, a range of restaurants and spa.

DESCRIPTION Stylish and contemporary, the Amari Watergate offers modern facilities, a variety of dining options and first-class service. The lobby and reception area is open and welcoming, the public facilities are comfortable and modern, and the rooms are stylish in a corporate way. There’s a swimming pool and bar area serving light lunches, a rooftop garden area with sun loungers, and a fitness centre and spa. ROOMS Amari Watergate has 569 rooms that are quite corporate in style, comfortable and functional, with a desk area and lounger, separate bath and shower in all rooms as well as free Wi-Fi. All allow access to the Executive Floor with lounge and outside terrace offering spectacular views of Bangkok and free pre-dinner cocktail drinks and snacks between 17h00 and 19h00 daily.

hailand’s largest island and connected to the mainland by two bridges, Phuket has a reputation for being a bit of a party island. This is in no small part to the island’s rather overcrowded shopping and nightlife capital, Patong Beach. But there’s certainly more to Phuket than partying. The island is a hub for beach resorts ranging from budget to luxury, quiet to vibey. From Karon and Kata beaches to Kamala & beyond, there’s plenty of variety from which to choose.

Phi Phi Island and Phang Nga Phuket is the ideal base from which to explore Phi Phi Island, famed for being the site where The Beach was filmed, as well as nearby Ao Phang Nga National Park’s James Bond Island (named for its role in a James Bond film). Highly recommended is a sea canoe trip where a local guide will take you through caves and along dramatic coastlines. See the sheer limestone karsts that jut vertically out of the emerald-green water. You will love spending the day cruising past these limestone islands, stopping at the odd beach or snorkeling.

RECOMMENDED FOR COUPLES ABOVE » ENJOY A COCKTAIL BY THE POOL AT THE SEAVIEW PATONG

LOCATION Located in South Patong, away from the business of Bangla Road and just across the road from the beach with lovely views of Patong Bay. Better to be on the south side of Patong than the north side. It’s quieter and has more of a beach than a Patong city feel. Why not try one of the deluxe swim up rooms, that give you access to the pool from your patio?

Old Phuket Town DESCRIPTION

Charming and historic, Phuket’s Old Town is beautifully preserved with its ornate ‘shophouses’, impressive Sino-colonial mansions, quaint cafes and mini exred light district. Travellers can explore Buddhist shrines and temples, museums and the Phuket Walking Street, a weekly market on Thalang Road. There are lots of excellent restaurants and cafés in the area, and local handicrafts on sale.

There are two lovely pools; a quieter one next to the bar and lunch restaurant, and a kid’s pool. There is also a fitness centre with a spa and beauty salon offering Thai massage, beauty treatments and aromatherapy (open until 20h00). ROOMS

Phuket FantaSea

ABOVE» DURING THE DAY, BANGLA ROAD.

Bangla Road

Phuket FantaSea is a circus-style show, proclaiming itself as the ultimate nighttime cultural theme park, featuring performers including trapeze artists with a buffet dinner served on the side. It is set in a theme park located in Kamala Beach just north of Patong and offers carnival games, shopping, an adventure centre and food outlets. It’s loud, kitsch and proud.

The lead-in Superior room accommodates two people and has a bath with shower inside. These rooms have nice balconies with wooden patio furniture. 80% of the rooms have a sea view, the other 20% have a pool or garden view. The Deluxe rooms are located on the ground floor, some of which have pool access, the others with garden access. The Deluxe rooms have lovely, big bathrooms.

Party the night away on the infamous Bangla Road in Patong, the party capital of Phuket. From lady boys to drunk tourists, Bangla is a heaving mass of beers, music and pole dancing. Off Bangla there are several side roads (or soi) on which visitors will find even more bars with scantily clad Thai girls and lady boys coaxing foreigners to play bar games & have a drink. If you’re not too conservative and like a party, this is a definite must!

3.5-star DEEVANA PATONG

PATONG

RECOMMENDED FOR COUPLES ABOVE » TAKE A DIP IN ONE OF DEEVANA’S BEAUTIFUL POOLS

LOCATION Only 400m from the pulsating Bangla entertainment street in Patong, Deevana Patong is located near a big shopping centre and there’s a free shuttle bus to Patong or Phuket City three times a day. DESCRIPTION The Deevana Patong, only 10 minutes’ walk from the beach, is by far the best 3-star resort we’ve seen in Phuket. Set among 15 acres of gardens, there’s a renovated spa and fitness room, and pool areas including a garden pool with bar (the spa pool is much nicer) and a kid’s pool. Please note however that there is no kids’ club available, so the resort is perhaps better suited to couples. ROOMS Deevana Patong has two wings: a Garden wing and a Spa wing. The Garden wing has a swimming pool and houses the lead-in Superior Garden room accommodating three adults maximum [a tight squeeze at 27 sqm]. The Spa wing is definitely more upmarket with the Ground Floor Deluxe offering a little Jacuzzi pool and the second and third floor offering Superior rooms with a balcony and wooden patio furniture. There is an on-site spa and gym, as well as a restaurant and bar, while the beach is only a ten-minute walk from the hotel. LEFT» 3.5-STAR DEEVANA PATONG DELUXE ROOM.

4-star PATONG MERLIN

It is a large resort with over 400 rooms. The Superior & Deluxe rooms are 30 sqm, have a shower in bath, flat-screen TV and a large balcony. One of the wings doesn’t offer a bath, but guests can request to be accommodated in the wing that does provide bath facilities in the bathroom. RECOMMENDED FOR FAMILIES ABOVE » 1 OF PATONG MERLIN’S 4 POOLS!

LOCATION Great location across the road from the beach and a short walk to Patong’s infamous Bangla Road although it’s secluded enough to provide guests with a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Patong city centre. DESCRIPTION

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT... Close enough to the bustle of Bangla road to walk, but secluded enough not to be disturbed by it. Great pool areas, especially at the Spa wing.

Use the hotel shuttle bus to set off to Bangla Road or the beach!

ROOMS

Smack-bang in the middle of Patong but secluded enough to feel like you’re in a resort, Patong Merlin has a great vibe. It’s also a lovely 4-star option in Patong for families and features three restaurants, four swimming pools, a fitness room and a kids’ club (for children aged 4 to 8). The Merlin Spa has eight treatment rooms and both the Seaside Terrace and Sunset Bar back on to the beach (separated by a road).

There’s also a courtesy shuttle to Phuket every morning and afternoon.

P

atong is for those after the nightlife of Phuket. The bustling area of Patong will not disappoint with its streets packed with go go bars, street stalls, bars and restaurants. Karon and Kata are areas about 15-20 minutes from Patong and are more suited to families and couples wanting something a little more quiet. Most hotels offer shuttles to Patong for those wanting a night out if staying in these outer areas.

5-star AMARI PHUKET

RECOMMENDED FOR FAMILIES ABOVE » TAKE IN THE SPECTACULAR VIEW OF PATONG FROM AMARI’S OCEAN VIEW POOL

LOCATION Great location in South Patong with great views over Patong Bay, Amari Coral is located away from the hustle and bustle of Patong city centre. The Amari is tucked away enough for guests to feel like they’re at a secluded beach resort, even though the city centre is just 10 minutes’ walk away. The property is located directly on the beach, but guests can only swim at high tide. Upgrade to the ocean wing which iincludes added extras such as daily canapés & cocktails.

4-star BURASARI RESORT

RECOMMENDED FOR COUPLES

ROOMS There is a variety of room categories at this resort to suit all needs. The entrylevel Superior rooms are located in a terraced building with great views. However, we recommend the Lagoon rooms as they have more of a resort feel to them and are surrounded by beautiful gardens and pools. If you really want to spoil yourself, request a Cabana room that has its own jacuzzi pool.

ABOVE » AERIAL VIEW OF THE BURASARI COURTYARD POOL

Most of the resort has just undergone a complete renovation so expect new facilities. It has a lovely tropical feel about it and is as good as any four-star Mauritius resort. There are two pools, one of which has the Rim Talay restaurant overlooking the sea. The Breeze Spa is located on a cliff overlooking the sea and offers amazing sea views. Guests can enjoy a tasty breakfast buffet with loads of variety. Lunch and dinner are also served at the buffet. ROOMS The rooms are crisp, clean and modern. However, there are no family rooms, nor a kids’ club so this resort is better suited to couples.

LOCATION Featuring great views of Patong Bay, Amari Coral is located a 10-minute walk away from the hustle and bustle of Patong city centre, directly on the beach. However, you can only swim at high tide. DESCRIPTION Very much a boutique resort feel to it. The pool area is surrounded by Ibiza style lounges and there is a calming feel. The spa at this resort was voted best luxury spa in 2017, so it’s definitely worth a visit. There is 1 pool that connects through the courtyard of the hotel, although very inviting there is not that much natural sunlight that fills the space. We recommend one of the room categories that overlooks the pool and courtyard.

3-star BAAN SAMUI RESORT

RECOMMENDED FOR COUPLES ABOVE » CENTRALLY LOCATED ON CHAWENG BEACH, VERY COLOURFUL ; THIS PLACE IS FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART!

LOCATION Located on bustling Chaweng Beach, this budget hotel offers access to a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants. This resort also offers direct access to the beach.

Na Muang Waterfalls

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui’s party capital is Chaweng Beach, located on the east coast of the island. Expect live music, bars heaving with foreigners and night markets. Beach Road is particularly rowdy at night. During the day, however, Chaweng is a delightful village.

There are two Na Muang waterfalls, the highest of which is around 80m high and 10m wide. It’s fairly easy to access by foot and worth a visit if travellers want to spend a couple of hours lazing in the waterfall pools and getting up close and personal with Koh Samui nature.

BELOW» GO SEE THE ROCK FORMATIONS – HIN TA & HIN YAI.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai Two rock formations (Hin Ta and Hin Yai, known as Grandpa and Grandma rocks respectively), that resemble male and female genitalia have become quite the tourist attraction and are located between Lamai and Hua Thanon. Legend has it that Ta Kreng & Yai Riem set off by boat in pursuit of Ta Monglaai’s daughter’s hand in marriage for their son. Enroute, their boat was caught in a storm and they died at sea, turning into rocks as proof to the would-be bride’s parents of their true intentions. It’s quite easy to spot the grandfather rock, but visitors will probably need to ask a local to point them in the right direction to see the grandmother rock.

DESCRIPTION

Definitely worth visiting in the evening if visitors are seeking a more laid back restaurant and bar alternative to Chaweng. There are plenty of these lining the Bophut Beach on which Fisherman’s Village is located. It has a distinctly Mediterranean feel about it despite being lined by wellpreserved wooden Chinese shop-houses. There are several clothing and jewellery shops as well as tour operators offering tours to the neighbouring islands.

Lead-in Deluxe rooms are almost 32 sqm in size including balcony with bath and shower, air conditioning, fridge and hair dryer. The next level up is the Superior Deluxe room, all of which are located on the ground floor and measure almost 33 sqm in size including balcony. The rooms are bright and vibrant and more suited to the younger traveller.

#2 GETTING AROUND There’s a public taxi service that is available in most island hot-spots, but be warned that the drivers do not like to use their meters and will probably overcharge foreigners. By far the most popular way of getting around is renting a scooter, in all makes, sizes and colours. A small 125cc scooter is inexpensive to hire, but make sure you book through a reputable company and ensure that you use a helmet as accidents occur regularly. There are also motorbike taxis and of course you can rent a bicycle to get around.

LOCATION Centara Villas Samui is located on the southern tip of Koh Samui, near the traditional fishing village of Hua Tanon. The resort is just 15 minutes by road to the nightlife areas of Lamai Beach, 30 minutes to Chaweng Beach, and 27km to Samui International Airport. The resort offers no fewer than three pools, the Cenvaree Spa, a fully equipped fitness centre and complimentary kayaks and mountain bikes. A children’s playground and babysitting service is also available on request. Reef Café offers fresh seafood dishes in a great beach-side setting and ocean views. Because it’s located on a hillside, there are lots of stairs. We recommend families request a room by the pool.

ROOMS The resort has 102 Southern Thai-style bungalows. Each bungalow has its own private terrace, some even feature ocean views. We would recommend the Deluxe Villa that’s 42 sqm in size, accommodating up to two adults and two children. There’s an option of both kingsize or twin beds, as well as a private furnished sun-deck, spacious bathroom with shower and wireless internet.

#1 BANGKOK

#2 PHUKET

Morning seat in coach city & temples tour

Half day seat in coach Phuket introduction tour

Thailand has over 26,000 temples or Wats (local name). This tour will bring you to three of the most distinguished temples in Bangkok. First is Wat Trimitr, the temple of the Golden Buddha. The statue is made from solid gold weighing 5.5 tons. It is a fine example of Sukhothai art and was discovered by chance from a layer of stucco during construction of the temple. Passing through Chinatown your next stop is Wat Po, the temple of the reclining Buddha, which is the largest and oldest in Bangkok. Your last stop is at Wat Benchamabopit, or the Marble Temple. This magnificent monastery was built with white Italian marble from Carrara.

As the tour name suggests this is an ideal opportunity to familiarise yourself with your holiday island. Take in the islands natural beauty as you drive along the beach roads through Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai. For fabulous photo opportunities you will stop at the Karon viewpoint and cultural sights such as the sacred Buddhist temple of Phuket ‘Wat Chalong’. Phuket town offers an interesting mix of architecture including Sino - Portuguese. This town has been the backdrop for many western movies as it is said to be very similar to Indochina.

Full day Phi Phi Island by speedboat tour Taking a trip to Phi Phi Island is a must for everyone who visits Phuket, the most popular activity in the region. Hop on board a speedboat and in the blink of an eye you’ll arrive at the famous Maya Bay with its emerald waters and powdery beach (famous for featuring in The Beach), then Pileh Lagoon, with its limestone cliffs and coral reefs (great for snorkeling), and then Viking Cave. The private beach restaurant at Ao Poh is waiting for you to enjoy a lunch buffet of Asian and Western cuisines. Lastly, you will be taken to Bamboo Island, a great spot to enjoy your precious leisure time and swimming over the huge coral reefs.

Half day Damnern Saduak Floating Market tour A glimpse of everyday life in Thailand can be seen at the Damnern Saduak Floating Market. An exhilarating narrow longtailed speedboat ride through the marshes prepares you for this unique market where Thai style canoes laden with colourful fruits, vegetables, sweets and meats gently ply their way through the canal.

#3 KOH SAMUI

Full day sea kayaking at Ang Thong National Park Sea Kayaking is the best way to experience the spectacular archipelago of the Angthong National Marine Park. Famous from the book “The Beach”, this area consists of some 40 mostly uninhabited islands dotted with white sandy beaches, sheer limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, caves and secluded bays. This tour allows for close-up exploration of the natural wonders of both the central and northern reaches of Angthong and gives you the best opportunity of spotting some of the wide variety of flora and fauna found in the park. Included in the tour are all transfers, a light breakfast, lunch and beverages, use of kayaks, snorkelling gear and waterproof bags, an English speaking guide and park fees.

Full day snorkelling Koh Tao and Koh Nangyuan tour Travel by speedboat to the island of Koh Nangyuan where you can start your day by swimming, snorkelling or sunbathing. This island is actually made of three smaller

islands but they are all connected by a sandbank, which offers an unbroken stretch of clean white sand. On the west side of the island you will find some fabulous corals. Next, head out to Koh Tao, which actually means turtle island, where lunch will be served. The island gets this name because it is shaped like one, or so people say! It is also one of the most scenic places for diving and snorkelling in the Gulf of Thailand especially along Aow Leuk or Leam Tien beaches one of which will be visited (subject to weather and water conditions). National Park fees are not included and must be paid direct.
