From its humble creation to critical acclaim on Broadway, the Obie Award-winning play has excited, inspired, and transformed audiences across the country. Shange’s fearless prose vividly paints intimate portraits of the pain and jubilation that

women of color experience from girlhood throughout life. Shange was groundbreaking in her efforts to shatter the silence that protected abusers of women. for colored girls is a brave reckoning, a celebration, a healing ceremony, and perhaps most profoundly, an example of the awesome power a chorus of women’s voices can have.

The second play in Ifa Bayeza’s powerful trilogy about Emmett Till, benevolence is a haunting, unforgettable portrait of the collateral damage surrounding a case that gained international attention and sparked the Civil Rights Movement. Penumbra produced Bayeza’s award-winning The Ballad of Emmett Till in 2014 to critical acclaim. When the siblings investigate the home of an African American couple displaced by Hurricane Katrina, what’s real and what’s fantasy clash against a shocking truth. This witty and haunting story is brought to you in partnership by Theater Mu and Penumbra Theatre.

AfroFuturism is an aesthetic, philosophical, and visionary framework that combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, Afrocentrism, and magical realism with non-Western cosmologies in order to critique not only the present-day dilemmas of black people, but also to revise, interrogate, and re-examine the historical events of the past. Join us for a conversation with thought leaders working to fashion the guiding principles, strategies, and practices of sustainability to support black diasporic artistic production and systemic social change.

Throughout history, various cultures have used songs, stories, poetry, and dance to communicate religious beliefs: Noh drama of Japan; the reverent preparation before Bharatanatyam dance in India; the plays written for holy festivals by the Greeks; the ritual storytelling and sensorial reenactment of the Pesach seder; or Egungun praise dance in Nigeria. Frequently, a storyteller is not only a narrator but also an actor, communicating morals and lessons to the audience by approximating the deities, and the performance itself is a votive offering. Join us as we investigate the intersections between ritual and performance, then and now.

The power of bearing witness to trauma, to omitted histories, and to personal testimony has been demonstrated perennially at Penumbra Theatre. How does a place become home? What do we carry with us? What is sacred to the ground? For generations of displaced peoples, the Rondo neighborhood has been a place to plant roots. The Language You Cry In is an amazing detective story that reveals meaningful links between African Americans and their ancestral past. Bridging hundreds of years and thousands of miles from the Gullah people of present-day Georgia back to 18th century Sierra Leone, it recounts the remarkable saga of how African Americans retained links with their African past through the horrors of the middle passage, slavery and segregation. “This is a story of memory, how the memory of a family was pieced together through a song with legendary powers to connect those who sang it with their roots.”

This 1991 independent film written, directed and produced by Julie Dash was the first feature film directed by an African American woman distributed theatrically in the United States. Set in 1902, it tells the story of three generations of Gullah or Geechee women in the Peazant family on St. Helena Island as they prepare to migrate to the North on the mainland. Notable for its lush cinematography and nonlinear storytelling, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

The Last Angel of History is an alluring blend of science fiction and essay film. The story of a time-traveling “data thief” on a quest to crack a hidden code that will unlock his destiny blends archival video, photographs, and interviews with musicians, writers, and cultural critics whose meditations explain the origins and significance of AfroFuturism. The result is John Akomfrah’s passionate call for black people around the world to uncover our histories, so that we may know where we are going.

Terence Nance’s debut film is a beautiful and haunting story of unrequited love. Its genre unclassifiable, An Oversimplification of her Beauty is a mash-up of home video, fiction, animation, puppetry, voiceover, and nonfiction shorts. The film has a truly textural feel, almost a homemade collage, as a lover attempts to capture the magnetism of his longing. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of African American visual art, from Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence to record sleeves and cartoons, the film explores the mysterious realms of desire, longing, and love.

MULE BONE: A COMEDY OF NEGRO LIFE

Set in Eatonville, Florida—Hurston’s hometown and the inspiration for much of her fiction—this energetic and farcical play centers on Jim and Dave, a two-man song-and-dance team, and Daisy, the woman who comes between them. Overcome by jealousy, Jim hits Dave with a mule bone and hilarity and chaos ensue as the town splits into two factions: Team Jim and Team Dave. Ages 13 and up.
