NOVEMBER 21 THROUGH DECEMBER 22, 2019 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Langston Hughes was an American poet, novelist, and playwright whose African American themes made him a primary contributor to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. He wrote with the gifted ear of a poet, but in a language that seemed to spring organically from within black culture, infused with notes from Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico and the American South. His prolific body of work, including Montage of a Dream Deferred, Black Nativity and the co-edited anthology The Book of Negro Folklore, celebrates the vitality, the creativity, and the resilience of black people in the United States.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Virginia and Charles are wealthy, white arts patrons with a keen interest in racial injustice. Over time they have acquired an impressive collection of contemporary art depicting the violence exacted against black Americans. Tonight, they are excited to host Charlotte, a black photographer on the verge of great renown, at a private dinner in their home. As the conversation ventures into our current political climate from the first champagne toast, it’s clear neither artist nor collector is what the other may have expected. With incisive wit, Rankine’s play turns the camera from the casualties to the collectors.

FEBRUARY 6 THROUGH MARCH 1, 2020 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Claudia Rankine is a poet, essayist, playwright, and multi-media artist whose work conveys a moral abhorrence of racism and yearning for social justice. Her five volumes of poetry, two plays, and various essays have won widespread acclaim, including the 2014 Los Angeles Times Book Award and the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry for her book-length poem Citizen: An American Lyric. Rankine has taught at Case Western Reserve University, Barnard College, and the University of Georgia. She is currently the Frederick Iseman Professor of Poetry at Yale University and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

And then she made the hardest decision of her life: to leave the girls in Jamaica while she went to the United States, working several grueling jobs to earn enough money to send for them. Six years later, her daughters, Claudette and Valerie, joined her stateside. Though reunited, the wounds of departure still sting and Daphne’s monumental sacrifice feels mostly like abandonment to her girls. Now adults, the tables turn as Claudette and Valerie must care for their mom in the sunset of her life. A poignant story of mothers and daughters aching to reach each other with unconditional love before it’s too late.

Based on her ground-breaking play of the same name, ‘da Kink in My Hair was a television hit that put her on the global map. Trey is a former television producer for the Women’s Television Network, a writer for the Comedy Network, and the executive producer of the Urban Women’s Comedy Festival. She co-wrote I Am Not a Dinner Mint and produced the play Secrets of a Black Boy.

Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh perspective to our current racial narrative. Raoul Peck’s Oscar-nominated documentary is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter.
