“PIPELINE CONFIRMS DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU’S REPUTATION AS A PLAYWRIGHT OF PIERCING ELOQUENCE” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

IS THERE NO WAY OUT? Dominique Morisseau’s

PIPELINE

Directed by Lou Bellamy

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Omari is caught between two worlds. Raised in the city, he attends a private college preparatory school upstate, far from his roots and his family. His mother, Nya, is walking a tightrope: send him away and risk the dangers of discrimination, or keep him near and tempt the trouble waiting on the block. After a run in with a white teacher, the halls of his elite school turn out to be as unsafe as the city’s streets. A searing story of a mother trying to protect her young son from a world that can’t see the little boy she loves.

4

OCTOBER 3 THROUGH OCTOBER 27, 2019 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Dominique Morisseau is an acclaimed playwright, actor, and 2018 MacArthur Fellow whose stirring, compassionate work captures the lives of people in communities grappling with economic and social change. Through lyrical dialogue, she conjures emotionally complex characters and reveals their humor, vulnerability, and fortitude in the face of profound struggle. Her work has been staged and commissioned by celebrated companies including Steppenwolf Theatre, the Hip Hop Theater Festival, the Public Theater, and Penumbra Theatre.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– It’s that time of year again! Penumbra’s timeless holiday tradition returns to light up the stage and your heart. Under the direction of Lou Bellamy and the musical direction of Sanford Moore, our homegrown Christmas show features exceptional lead vocalists, the outstanding Kingdom Life Church Choir, and the stirring choreography of Uri Sands of TU Dance. Join us for a celebration full of joy, community, and spirit.

NOVEMBER 21 THROUGH DECEMBER 22, 2019 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Langston Hughes was an American poet, novelist, and playwright whose African American themes made him a primary contributor to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. He wrote with the gifted ear of a poet, but in a language that seemed to spring organically from within black culture, infused with notes from Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico and the American South. His prolific body of work, including Montage of a Dream Deferred, Black Nativity and the co-edited anthology The Book of Negro Folklore, celebrates the vitality, the creativity, and the resilience of black people in the United States.

“CLAUDIA RANKINE’S . . . SEARING MIND AND SHARP SENSE OF HUMOR GIVE US MUCH TO DEBATE, PONDER, AND LOVE ABOUT THE AMERICAN RACE STORY WHEN WE NEED IT MOST” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU. Claudia Rankine’s

THE WHITE CARD

Regional Premiere Directed by Talvin Wilks

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Virginia and Charles are wealthy, white arts patrons with a keen interest in racial injustice. Over time they have acquired an impressive collection of contemporary art depicting the violence exacted against black Americans. Tonight, they are excited to host Charlotte, a black photographer on the verge of great renown, at a private dinner in their home. As the conversation ventures into our current political climate from the first champagne toast, it’s clear neither artist nor collector is what the other may have expected. With incisive wit, Rankine’s play turns the camera from the casualties to the collectors.

8

FEBRUARY 6 THROUGH MARCH 1, 2020 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Claudia Rankine is a poet, essayist, playwright, and multi-media artist whose work conveys a moral abhorrence of racism and yearning for social justice. Her five volumes of poetry, two plays, and various essays have won widespread acclaim, including the 2014 Los Angeles Times Book Award and the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry for her book-length poem Citizen: An American Lyric. Rankine has taught at Case Western Reserve University, Barnard College, and the University of Georgia. She is currently the Frederick Iseman Professor of Poetry at Yale University and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

BOOKEND CLASSES FEBRUARY 10 AND MARCH 2 AT 12:30PM Learn more about the play with other curious theatre lovers! At the first Bookend class, explore the script and gain insight into the production. “I COME FROM THIS LEGACY OF WOMEN WHO LEAVE THEIR CHILDREN BEHIND… THIS PLAY WAS REALLY A WAY FOR ME TO EXAMINE HOW THIS AFFECTED US” – PLAYWRIGHT TREY ANTHONY

FORGIVENESS IS A LIFELONG JOURNEY Trey Anthony’s

HOW BLACK MOTHERS SAY I LOVE YOU Regional Premiere Directed by Signe Harriday

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Daphne had her first child at seventeen years old. Her second came two years later. And then she made the hardest decision of her life: to leave the girls in Jamaica while she went to the United States, working several grueling jobs to earn enough money to send for them. Six years later, her daughters, Claudette and Valerie, joined her stateside. Though reunited, the wounds of departure still sting and Daphne’s monumental sacrifice feels mostly like abandonment to her girls. Now adults, the tables turn as Claudette and Valerie must care for their mom in the sunset of her life. A poignant story of mothers and daughters aching to reach each other with unconditional love before it’s too late.

APRIL 23 THROUGH MAY 17, 2020 ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Award-winning playwright Trey Anthony was the first black Canadian woman to have her own program on a prime-time network. Based on her ground-breaking play of the same name, ‘da Kink in My Hair was a television hit that put her on the global map. Trey is a former television producer for the Women’s Television Network, a writer for the Comedy Network, and the executive producer of the Urban Women’s Comedy Festival. She co-wrote I Am Not a Dinner Mint and produced the play Secrets of a Black Boy.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– This intimate documentary follows the wrestling team at JO Johnson High School in Huntsville, which has been on Alabama’s failing schools list for many years. As they fight their way towards the State Championship and the doors they hope it will open, wrestlers Jailen, Jamario, Teague, and Jaquan each face injustices and challenges on and off the mat. Through it all, these young heroes strive towards their goals with humor and grit. Wrestle is an inspiring coming-of-age journey and an impassioned depiction of growing up disadvantaged in America today.

MONDAY APRIL 6, 2020 AT 7PM

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Filmed during three years of unparalleled violence in Baltimore, Charm City delivers a powerfully candid portrait of those on the frontlines. With grit, fury, and compassion, a group of police, citizens, community leaders and government officials grapple with the consequences of violence and try to reclaim their city’s future.

14

93 minutes, 2016

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– I Am Not Your Negro envisions the book James Baldwin never finished: a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh perspective to our current racial narrative. Raoul Peck’s Oscar-nominated documentary is a journey into black history that connects the past of the Civil Rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter.

THE PENUMBRA METHOD – LIVING OUR MISSION Penumbra’s mission extends beyond the stage. Since 2006 we have invested in artists who are trained in our signature method of art for social change. Whether our teams are working with ten year olds to create a culture of inclusion at school, or training adults to foster equity inside community organizations and businesses, Penumbra’s highly customized curricula drives positive change for our partner institutions. There are many ways to catalyze change in your world. Talk with us about how we might support your vision for a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable community today.

RACE WORKSHOP

RESIDENCIES

Organizations across the country approach Penumbra Theatre each year to encourage dialogue and engagement around the issues of race and equity. Penumbra’s RACE Workshop combines expert facilitation, a powerful exploration of race in America, monologues from brave artists, and opportunities for participants to use theatre as a way to learn, solve problems, and rehearse strategies to promote positive social change. The process celebrates difference, recognizes cultural nuance, and invites everyone to participate in the dialogue. Learn how you can book a RACE Workshop for your community today at penumbratheatre.org/services!

Penumbra works with a select number of schools each year to create specially made residency programs designed to power communities toward positive social change. Whether just beginning the work or looking to advance a mission-based commitment to justice, we build deep, ongoing relationships with schools to support the creation of vibrant, healthy communities for children and adults. Penumbra’s programming is rigorous, immersive, and sustains schools in sincere efforts to celebrate diversity, promote inclusivity, and to address inequity where it exists.

“The entire discussion gave me so much to think about. It was personal and moving, and encouraged self examination in a productive way.” –Julie, RACE Workshop Participant
